the secret to German train use is the right mindset.

it is not a trip where you have a right to enter a train and reach a destination in an allotted time.

It is not a trip. It’s a journey.

An epic journey as the myths have foretold. There we once again feel the brittleness of our human powers when confronted with the uncaring forces of fate!

we may try to steer our destiny but find ourselves blown around helplessly like Ulysses when he had already lost all his men.

But like Ulysses we rise to the challenge! We confront the merciless forces and fight on in adversity, never losing sight of our goals even when forced to take detours that seem to lead us far away!

and in it we also feel the strength of humanity!

That is the German train experience!

and in other news my Ersatztrain is now 48 min delayed and I should probably google the local busses.

Should I read this tag as "die Bahn" or "Die Bahn!" But both fit sooo

Okay so about the DB post. Do germans hate DB? Because danes hate DSB so so much (which i kind of think is unfair? at least in my experience) and we have this idea that DB is much better but this is the second time in like a month that i hear/see smth i think says the exact opposite. so can you like... talk a bit about DB? I'd like to know more 😅

Oh. OH. This might be the funniest ask I've ever gotten! 😂 Germans love to hate the DB! It is notoriously known for:

being late most of the time (especially on long distance rides)

therefore causing people to miss their connecting trains and reaching their destinations even later

just generally being bad at organisation and handling trouble on their routes

failing AC in summer

being surprised there's snow in winter

(the list goes on)

Generally, they're perceived to be a little ... incompetent at their job. When people have a journey coming up, they'll preemptively say something like: "wish me luck nothing goes wrong with my train ride". Mocking the DB is kind of a national sport and you'll find hundreds of memes about the DB's tardiness and bad handling of said tardiness. Here's a little selection from tumblr:

To be fair, German's do love to complain about everything and I guess it could be worse? Personally, I feel like other countries' train companies appear to be better managed, but that could be a case of "it's always greener on the other side"(?)

Ich bin ja der Meinung, dass Züge regelmäßig ~20 Minuten, ~40 Minuten Verspätung haben ist ein nicht einhalten des Vertrags, den ich beim Ticketkauf geschlossen habe. Wenn ich einen Zug buche, mit dem ich 14 Uhr ankommen soll und 14:30 ankomme ist die vertragliche Leistung nicht erfüllt und ich muss meine Seite trotzdem erfüllen.

Wie oft ich Hotels buchen muss und frei nehmen muss, weil ich einen Tag früher irgendwo hin fahren muss, weil man sich nie darauf verlassen kann, dass man halbwegs pünktlich ankommt.

Erst ab einer Stunde Entschädigung bekommen und dann nur 25%, das geht nicht. Die Konsequenzen müssen krasser sein. Ab 20 Minuten muss das anfangen, ab 1 Stunde 50%, ab 2 Stunden 100% zurück.

Oh letzter Zug fällt aus? Glückwunsch DB ihr dürft jetzt eine Hotelübernachtung zahlen.

Die schlechte Leitung müssen starke Konsequenzen haben sonst haben sie keine Motivation was zu ändern.

By the way: I’ve started to believe in miracles. Took the Deutsche Bahn from up north to Mitteldeutschland and back recently. On a weekend. I had to change trains three times each time because of 49-Euro-Ticket. I was prepared for Weichenstörungen, Zugausfälle, Abenteuer. Tja. There were no delays and I was where I wanted to be on time. Twice. Life can be very boring.

Wir fahren gerade mit einem ICE durch den u Bahn Schacht. An all den U Bahn Stationen vorbei.

Was würde ich dafür geben das von außen zu sehen. Wusste gar nicht, dass das geht.
