Why Should You Go To A Routine Dental Check-up?
A regular dental examination is crucial for one’s health. They not only maintain the condition of your teeth and gums, but they also guarantee long-term general health and hygiene. Regular dental visits are crucial, at least once every six months, and are not just necessary when you have an urgent dental issue. In this article we will discuss why routine dental check up is important, so continue reading.
Tumblr media
1. Dental Examinations Prevent Cavities, Plaque, Tartar, And Tooth Decay
Even the most careful person could forget to clean the hard-to-reach parts of their mouth. A notable example are the rear molars, which are notoriously difficult to clean. Everyone should go to the dentist every six months for this reason.
The dentist will check the patient’s teeth to look for any early signs of tooth decay. If the dentist notices tiny cavities or white patches on the patient’s teeth, fluoride therapy will be started in order to prevent tooth decay and fill larger cavities. After that, the dentist will do a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums to remove any plaque or tartar that has amassed there. By doing this, the teeth and gums will be protected from damaging microorganisms that dwell in plaque and tartar and hurt the teeth and gums.
2. Regular Dental Checkups Prevent Gum Disease
Usually, gum disease’s early stages don’t cause any symptoms. Gum disease in the mouth is so challenging to spot. Fortunately, dentists are trained to spot gum disease even when it tries to hide.
During a routine examination, the dentist will check the gums to make sure they are firm. We’ll look for swelling, receding gums, and broad gum pockets. If the dentist notices any of these disturbing signs, they will deal with the underlying issue.
Early gum disease often goes away when a patient modifies their dental habits. A dentist will be pleased to give their patient advice on proper gum care.
3. Dentists Conduct Regular Exams To Look For Oral Cancer
Along with inspecting the patient’s teeth and gums, a dentist will look for any signs of oral cancer. This is fantastic news because, if untreated, oral cancer can progress to a dangerous condition.
The dentist uses a specialised laser to find dead tissue caused by cancers. The examination is referred to as a VELscope cancer exam. It is painless and only takes a few minutes. Due to this examination, a person who sees the dentist every six months has a low risk of having late-stage oral cancer.
While looking in the mirror at your teeth may only show surface-level irregularities, it’s possible that you won’t be able to detect any issues that may be lurking beneath the gums and may continue to do so until it’s too late to fix them.
4. Early Problem Detection And Treatment Are Possible
While gazing in the mirror at your teeth may only reveal surface-level abnormalities, you might not be able to see any problems that might be hiding beneath the gums and might continue to do so until it is too late to address them. Dentists can assist you in recognising dental issues early on before they worsen. Dentists are quite skilled in recognising, diagnosing, and treating conditions like dental decay, gum disorders, etc. and can be very beneficial to you in the long run.
5. You Can Receive Guidance That Is Specific To Your Needs
Most people tend to make the error of depending solely on the internet for do-it-yourself solutions to basic oral health issues.
While the internet does have its advantages in that it can give you a wealth of knowledge to address your inquiry, that same wealth of information can also become your hindrance.
The internet is also infamous for its abundance of false information, which might get you into serious problems if you used it to treat your teeth and gums. A dentist, on the other hand, is a qualified professional who underwent extensive training before earning his or her dental licence. As a result, he or she would be a superior resource for advice on oral hygiene and care issues.
A dentist is also the best resource to turn to for dental care and treatments that are specifically designed to fit your needs and physical limitations.
6. You Can Identify Underlying Issues That Would Not Otherwise Be Visible
In the long run, getting regular dental checkups can save you a lot of stress and money by identifying and treating tooth problems that are not immediately apparent. Dental X-rays of your teeth and jaw bone are taken as part of the routine dental examination that is performed every six months.
Identification of potential problems such as impacted teeth (tooth that cannot grow past the gum line), bone deterioration, cysts, inflammation, tumours, and harm to adjacent structures like the jawbone is a key factor in this. In addition to these issues, X-rays obtained during a routine dental examination can also spot damaging dental conditions that should be addressed right away in order to prevent further issues.
7. You Can Avoid Developing Poor Oral Habits
Identifying and avoiding behaviours that can be harming your teeth and gums without your knowledge is one of the key reasons to have routine dental exams. Your teeth and gums can be harmed by bad habits including biting your nails, chewing ice, clenching your jaw, brushing too hard, eating foods that are too hard or sticky, smoking, drinking coffee, and more.
These problems and the harm they do to your teeth will be brought to light during your appointment to the dentist. Your dentist will be able to identify any obvious signs of tooth deterioration as well as the underlying cause. Then, you can focus on changing your lifestyle to avoid these practises and stop additional harm to your teeth and gums. He or she will be able to point out these harmful habits.

The California insurance thing is adding on to my established belief that insurance is inherently a bad mitigation for any risk that affects large swaths of the population who will very likely need it at some point.
The point of insurance is for the collective to pay an affordable regular fee, and the few who are affected by a given risk are compensated. Ideally, the EV of insurance would be 0, but in practice the EV is negative, but since we are broadly risk averse* we want it anyway.
But that only works if the fee is affordable and the risk is low. Fire insurance in California was a bad idea because everyone was at a major risk, the full cost of premiums would have been immense. California made it worse by making it illegal to charge for the real cost, but even if they hadn't, the premiums would have simply ballooned and many people would have been priced out of insuring their homes, and would still be in this situation.
Similar thing happens with healthcare. Everyone wants their insurance to cover everything, including very common, every day medications for long term medical problems. Needing my ADHD medication isn't a risk, it's not at the tail end of the probability distribution. My insurance shouldn't cover it, because covering it means that the company has to raise everyone's premiums, and raising the premiums prices people (myself included) out of being able to afford insurance for actual tail risks that could ruin their lives.
"But I need my ADHD medication to live a good life, it would ruin me to not get it" yeah, I hear you, same here, but insurance is just a bad system for dealing with that. It just isn't a risk, it doesn't fit well with the "small affordable fee to avoid unlikely disaster" model. If insurance pays for everyone's lifetime medications, then it has to raise premiums by the average of the cost of everyone's lifetime medications, and everyone breaks even, except now insurance is just more expensive and some people are priced out.
I think anytime insurance starts to sail out of the price range of the target demographic, it's a sign that something is deeply wrong and some intervention, likely government intervention, is needed. If people can't afford the fire insurance, it's because the fire risk is way too high and your forest management strategy should be overhauled. If people are struggling to pay their health care insurance, their insurance probably covers way too much because too much of every day health care is also out of reach of people.
Insurance companies aren't the good guys, you have an adversarial relationship with them. They will try to screw you over and lie to you and scam you and all the rest. But you can't get blood from stone, and you can't get a policy of "pay me money if my home built on top of kindling burns down" without paying for it somewhere, and instead of getting mad at the insurance company you should probably start asking why your home is built on kindling.
*Or, well, more complicatedly the full cost of some disasters is much worse than than strict accounting cost. Losing your home is far more destructive than losing the market price of the home's value, because it means spending weeks to months homeless and opening you up to other risks.

If anyone remembers all the dental work I needed done uhhhhhhh three years ago and never went back and ran away forever…I’m finally going back to a dentist on Thursday to restart the process and face my deep and utter abiding terror. And I also scheduled my COVID and flu vaccines for a couple hours later. And my psych appointment to restart meds.
I figured get it all done in one day, have my miserable immune reaction on Friday that I seem to always get with Moderna COVID shots, and then flee directly into the weekend and never be a person again except when I’m on and off crying. It’s going to be so kind to future me to get these things done and I can do it no matter how much I feel like I am constantly about to Actually Physically Die.
#you can see why I’m restarting meds#my brain is constantly convincing me that my teeth are about to actually finish rotting out of my mouth and I probably have an abscess#already that is going to give me a jaw or heart infection#which is VERY unlikely#and that my dog is deeply sick and I should rehome her and give her to someone who’ll take proper care of her and isn’t me#yadda yadda#it’s been fucking miserable#the only good part is 1) I’m going to get the worst part over with (starting the process) and#2) even if I completely flee and refuse to go back I’ll have one dental cleaning at least helping with plaque buildup and stuff#this is so fucking EMBARRASSING it’s all so EMBARASSING#it shouldn’t be this hard for me and I know it’s irrational#I’m just so scared because it’s so triggering for me for NO REASON and#I KNOW that this time when we get to the multiple fillings and at least one root canal and also my impacted wisdom teeth that it’ll be#different and I won’t go un-numb or if I do again they’ll have better checks in place for when I panic lie to their faces#but it doesn’t help#and I’m so sure they’re gonna tell me I need three or more root canals because I’ve waited way way too long#and I STILL can’t consistently keep up with brushing and flossing#which is the most embarassing and shameful thing in the world and I KNOW#but I’m scared shitless of all of it and it’s all a sensory nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!#anyway I’m not going to be okay later this week and I’m not particularly okay now#so if I’m not around online much#that’s why#but I’m happy news Aoife and I are having some lovely walks this week and she’s very cute and snuggly and we played tug a lot of times yest#*yesterday and she also stayed sniffing a bush while a bike went past two feet away#instead of getting startled and needing to hop or bark at it and then calm down#I’m so proud of her#and I wouldn’t be able to do this at all without my very kind partner who spearheaded scheduling the dentist (and researching places)#after my jaw pain nervous breakdown last week#health#personal

"oh the decor? I actually did it all by myself, can you tell? I took a color theory course in college."
The framed photo is actually from his own personal collection! He thought adding the motivational posters and the "rest in peace" would help calm patients. :) He's very proud, please don't be rude.

sawyer was sick over the weekend so we got some blood tests done and it turns out she is diabetic, she stayed at the vet a couple of nights, it was really strange to be alone in my room those nights. i spend more time with her than anybody. then we were supposed to pick her up thursday morning and they said to come in the evening instead because her glucose was v low. the vet asked me to find a glucose sensor to bring with me that evening, it was a public holiday so i had to find a pharmacy that was actually open. when we went to get her we waited 90 minutes and the sensor was being weird so they said come back later. finally brought her back home at 11pm and the sensor still wasn't working, had to go buy another sensor and bring her back this morning to switch them out, had to leave her there for a few hours so they could switch them and make sure the new one worked, then come back in the afternoon. i've had like no sleep at all this week, its a miracle i kept my eyes open to get training to give her insulin. she's so much better since she came home, even though she's not stabilised yet she very clearly feels heaps better ❤ it was such a relief to have her sleeping on my bed again last night. i was still up all night because i felt like i needed to keep an eye on her because i didn't have the monitor. we'll be in and out a lot over the next couple of weeks while they fine tune her dosage and monitor her levels.

people who think mouthwashing is about rape clearly haven't played how fish is made/the last one and then another
#scary crane rambles#dental hygiene videogame tag#just watched a back to back playthrough and. wowie zowie#its a good time all around but man it provides some much needed context to the themes that wrong organ works with#both how fish is made and its dlc seem to be very much about capitalism#like. the base game being about having discussions with people about things that heavily resemble choosing a career#and the general illusion of choice that leads to basically the same outcome either way you go#there's so many specific things i wanna talk about regarding this game.. might do an analysis post sometime soon :3#but anyways also the dlc ''the last one and then another'' is literally about absorbing other people to be ''bigger''#which seems to me like a metaphor for using other people to gain more success in life; specifically in terms of career#and all of these people seem vulnerable in some way so theres that too#AND BEFORE ANYONE BRINGS UP THAT ONE SCENE WITH THE STRING. BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANYTHING#i think thats about how lots of people who work and have kids struggle with taking care of their kid#because they have to work to support the kid but in turn they dont have the time to actually take care of the kid#and so in a metaphorical sense work sort of eats your kid. in the sense that it eats up the time you could take to care for them#just. god i have so much to say#but tldr its just more points in my theory's favor i think LMAO#tldr pleeeease check out how fish is made. its sooooo cool and awesome#theres even a funny musical number!!!!!!!!
