part one

In the days it takes you to heal from your injuries, Luffy comes to your bedroom to sleep next to you every night. He does try, the night after the first, to sleep in his own bedroom but he can't. Usually sleep comes easy to him, especially after a long day of adventure but not now. He closes his eyes, trying to think of your wounds healing, your soft breathing, your warm hand holding his, but he can't fall asleep. He huffs in irritation and rises from his bed, sulking across the ship to knock on your bedroom door and opening it slowly. You put down your book, you were also struggling to sleep, and open the covers for him. You smile at each other as he excitedly hops into your bed.

And so it becomes routine for you two. Even as your injuries heal completely, as the sunsets and the crew walks off to their separate bedrooms, Luffy follows you into yours and you let him. It becomes normal to roll over in the middle of the night and snuggle into his warm body, to wake up in the morning with his arm wrapped around you, to feel him pull you closer in his sleep, to giggle at his sleep-talking, to hear your name in his mumblings. You offer to let him keep his toothbrush and some clothes in your room, he accepts.

Sleeping together becomes so routine that you have trouble sleeping without him. There were times when you two would be separated by a foe that Luffy challenged and each night you would stay awake staring at his side of the bed, worry clouding your mind and making it impossible to sleep and eventually when Luffy defeated the foe, he would be covered in bandages and it was your turn to listen to his soft, even breathing as he slept. There were times when you be working late into the night and he would come find you, curling up on the floor next to you to sleep in your presence until you eventually finish and drag him back to your bed so you can both sleep comfortably. There were times when you would get angry at him for putting the crew in danger with his recklessness and you'd slammed your bedroom door in his face and toss and turn, your anger at him turning into desperation for him to just come to bed already, eventually you get up to find him and as you open your bedroom door, Luffy's sleeping frame falls on your legs. He'd been sleeping against your door. Smiling you pull his rubbery body into bed and cuddle up next to him, his heartbeat your lullaby. He smiles in his sleep and his arms come up around you. Whenever he's missing his hat or sandals, you find them by your bed.

This new routine of you and your captain sleeping together left your other crewmates with their mouths on the floor several times. They still hadn't gotten used to you two waving goodnight and walking into the same bedroom. When they would ask, you tried to explain but there really wasn't anything to explain. You and their captain couldn't sleep unless you slept together. That's all, why do they always stare at you in such surprise when you say that? Their shocked faces didn't discourage you both into cuddling up to each other at night, finding relaxation, warmth, safety, and comfort in each others arms. What was once your space becomes "our bedroom", "our closet", "our bathroom".

luffy doesn't get the sexual appeal of bodies. they're just that, right? bodies. muscles. he doesn't really get why sanji gets all annoying when he sees nami in a swimsuit. he doesn't get why franky likes to stare at robin so much when she's sunbathing. he understands they're supposed to be sexy or whatever, but he has never felt the way others do. he doesn't get it, but he doesn't care much about it either.

then he sees zoro covered in blood. bruised, damaged skin under the moonlight. his chest moving up and down because of his deep breathing. red dripping from his swords. his teeth tightly pressing into the hilt of wado.

luffy doesn't know if what he's feeling could be compared to sanji's sudden outbursts of horniness or franky's heart eyed expressions, but he certainly feels something he has never experienced before.

he's aware that he's staring at zoro, lost in thought. lost in his huge hands and wide chest. callused fingers. chapped lips. he wants to trace his nails over his scars. he wants to kiss every part of him. devour him. consume him.

is that what sex is supposed to be? luffy isn't sure. he has always known what it is, but never how it feels like.

usopp makes a joke about him staring, but he doesn't hear him. zoro's smiling. at him. his captain. but right now luffy doesn't know how to tell zoro that he's the one holding his soul. his breathing feels heavy on his chest and throat. he feels warmth overcoming him completely.

"all good, captain?" zoro's still grinning. he looks like the devil himself.

who were they fighting against again?

luffy only nods and his first mate seems to take it as a proper answer.

first mate. for some reason now that title feels more intimate. it makes him choke on his unsaid words.

luffy might not know a lot of things, but he knows he wants zoro in every possible way, and maybe that's more than enough.

So I’ve been getting into one piece and I’m seeing stuff on Luffy that mainly seems like:

“Luffy’s asexual!”

Here’s what I think:

He’s Demisexual. That is my headcanon, that is all I’m saying on this. And if I ever write a fanfic for the oc I’m thinking up then it’ll be obvious he’s a demisexual.

Warmth… contentedness. Security and trust. Luffy gazed into his lover’s eye, a soft smile on his lips.

“Whatcha looking at, Cap’n?” Zoro rasped, tilting his head further down to meet Luffy’s gaze.

“You. Always you.” Luffy whispered back, resting his hand on Zoro’s chest.

“You’ll never leave me will you?”

Zoro could see the darkness and pain lurking behind the pure sunshine in his captain’s eyes, and a deep wave of sorrow resonated through him, echoing throughout his very depths.

“Never again. I will follow you to the ends of the universe, to Hell and back again.” Zoro briefly closed his eye, the regret of not being there during his Captain’s, his lover’s, darkest moment, still as fresh and strong as when he first saw the news.

Opening his eye, Zoro stood strong under his Captain’s steady gaze.

“I am yours. Forever and always. My loyalty, my soul, is yours. My swords, my power and strength, are yours to command. You are my North Star, my home, my haven, Luffy. My Captain.” Interlacing his fingers with Zoro’s, Luffy smiled wider.

“I know.” Was all he said. Was all he needed to say. For his eyes held the same honest desire, trust, and that was all Zoro needed to see.

Love to them wasn’t based on carnal desire. Zoro has seen the desires of men and been unswayed, only one capturing his attention- His Captain, but neither of them felt the urge to submit to the acts of sexuality that they’ve witnessed on the seas.

Soft touches in the morning, smelly kisses before breakfast and sparring on the deck before noon. Zoro saving snacks for Luffy to give to him after battles, and Luffy stealing Sake from Sanji’s stash for Zoro. The light as their eyes meet after a particularly hard fight, checking to make sure that they were still there. Still in one piece. Late night talks, counting the stars until the sun rises. Zoro holding Luffy tight, reminding him that he’ll never be alone again. The comfort of seeing each other every day, of Zoro taking Luffy swimming and making sure he doesn’t drown. The softness and trust they show each other, combated by how they push each other to constantly improve. There wasn’t a need or overwhelming desire and urge to have sex, but when they did, it was for both of them to enjoy, just another act of love. Another way of showing their appreciation and trust in each other, of being there for each other. Love to them, was a whole-hearted level of pure trust and companionship.

Then Luffy happens.

Currently, Dr. Trafalgar Law was driving himself crazy by overthinking irrational thoughts and all this made him conclude love was hard! Author's note: I head canon that Shanks has ADHD, and sometimes for people with ADHD (and I'm speaking from 20+years of personal experience) have trouble identifying their emotions. And kind of like Luffy, that Shanks is some shade of demisexual and or aromantic.

After a scouting mission

Hongo: hey boss we got a problem.

Shanks: uh oh, what problem is that?

Hongo: we found this at a ship wreck on the other side of the island

Shanks: oh no, we've done this before, and it did not end well. I ended up not getting any sleep for months. Put that thing back where you got it.

Hongo: there were no other survivors from the wreck, and there is no one else on the island. So leaving the child on the island isn't an option.

Shanks: *groans*

Benn: Are you going to be the one to take cared of the little shit?

Hongo: about that *his eyes drift over to you*

Benn and Shanks: *follow his gaze*

Benn: perfect, the rookie'll take care of it.

Lucky Roux: I can do that for you. *Doesn't wait for your answer, and just removes your apron and places the baby in your hands*

Shanks: probably, but the baby looks comfy

Baby: *fell asleep the moment you wrapped your arms around it*

You: *sighs and looks around for a place to sit down, only for every spot to be taken*

Shanks: *pats his knee in invitation*

You: *sits down across his lap, putting your feet in Benn's lap, and leaning yourself and the baby against his chest*

The crew: *coos at how cute the three of you look*

An hour later

The crew: * left the room to finish their chores*

You: *asleep with your head pressed into the crook of Shank's neck*

Shanks: *stroking the baby's cheek and periodically glancing over at your resting face*

Benn: You three look quite cozy *pulls out his cigarettes*

Shanks: no smoking around the wee one, and I know it won't last.

Benn: I'm sensing a 'but' coming.

Shanks: *shakes his head*, it's just that this feels... right. I almost don't want it to end, but we need to get the baby back to their family or at least somewhere safer than my ship.

Benn: the baby aside, you and (y/n) don't have to end. I know you've known you've had feelings for them for weeks. It's not like you to ruminate for so long, you usually know exactly how you feel.

Shanks: *sighs* this is different, they're different, and it feels like I'm different now too.

Benn: explains a lot about your behavior lately.

Shanks: my behavior?

Benn: you haven't seemed like yourself lately.

Shanks: because I haven't felt like myself for a few weeks. *Tucks a strand of your hair to the side* I have so many doubts and a lot of anxiety with them here. If they'll live to see tomorrow. If they'll get sick and need medication we don't have. If they're safe here, or if they'd be safer hidden away on an island only we know. But despite all of that the thought of them leaving fills me with even more anxiety. Like what would happen if someone showed up to hurt them, and I wasn't there to protect them.

Benn: you're in love dude.

Shanks: nah, I just want them to be around to bring me sweets, or to straighten my outfit before I go out to port. It's not like I want them to kiss me or ... *Looks at your sleeping face*... Oh, dear

Benn: dummy

Shanks: don't you have duties to finish up?

Benn: good night boss.

Shanks: *takes you to sleep in his bed and puts the baby in the bassinet for the night before crawling into bed with you* all of this makes no sense, but for once I don't mind.
