One Day More

Part One - Part Two

The morning after wasn’t awkward in the way you’d feared. Joel still grunted most of his replies and the downward tug of his lips still held tight but now he would turn his head to you at random moments and smile or nudge Ellie with his elbow until she rattled off horrible puns and jokes she’d thought of.

Conversations spread between the three of you in intervals as you walked. Ellie revealed she’d never ridden a bike before, which led to the story of the scar over your eyebrow. (The one still intact) Joel talked about wrecking a bike when he was a kid by trying to ride it off the roof.

Everything flowed to the surface, tidbits of information about the world before — Ellie sucking up everything you said with a soft smile and lingering questions. The closer you got the harder it was to keep going.

“What about music?” The teenager stopped in the middle of the road. “Joel can play guitar, or he says he can. What about you?”

“I was trying to learn to play the ukulele, but school got in the way. My brother could play almost any instrument you put in front of him.”

Ellie stopped walking and Joel turned towards you. “You have a brother?”

“Uh,” It’s not like it was a secret. It’d been so long since you’d talked to them even before the outbreak and now - you hoped they survived, “Two actually and three sisters.”

“Cool.” Ellie bounced on her feet. “Were you close? Joel has a brother — Tommy.”

Ah, that’s who Tommy was.

Joel stared at the teenager with a pointed look, Ellie rolling her eyes at him before gesturing towards you. “What’s wrong with saying that? It’s not like aliens are going to come down and snatch him up. Although, that’d be pretty cool.”

Joel shook his head. “Learn some tact, kid.”

She flipped him off, then focused on you again.

You shrugged. “I have two younger siblings, brother and sister. One of my sisters was five years older than me and my eldest sister and brother were about ten and eleven years older. Ah, I was close to my oldest sister — I lived with her while I was going to school. She didn’t have kids of her own, but her husband did.”

Joel tilted his head. “How many?”

You had to think, “Two, but my older brother and middle sister had three kids a piece. Although, I never met the last four. They weren’t my biggest fans when I came out as Bi.”

“Damn.” Ellie shook her head. “What about the youngest?”

That made you pause — words stuck in your throat as you remembered their watery eyes and forced goodbyes.

“State took them in my junior year of high school. Uh, some stuff went down and the state took them from my mom. She died a few months later and wasn’t able to look for them after the adoptions went through. They were both eight.”

Silence.

“Your sister didn’t make it?”

You shook your head. “She was out of the country on vacation when everything went down. I like to think they all made it, if they didn’t, I hoped they felt no pain.”

Joel fell in step with you and leaned until his arm touched yours, his fingers grazing your knuckles until you grabbed his hand and held it.

Ellie looked at you both, then nodded, “Never knew my mom.”

“I had a daughter.”

The confessions all hung there, waiting for someone to reach out and touch. It’d been almost four months, and this felt like the closest you’d ever been. A hurt buried itself deep in your chest.

These two strangers had felt like family — to feel safe.

“I met Dana in college,” The necklace of ashes felt heavy against your chest, “I was pre-med and she was a liberal arts major.” You chuckled, remembering the look on her face when you introduced yourself, focus and all.

“Looking at us you would have thought it’d be the other way around, but Dana wanted to be a literature professor, it was incredible what she could keep, the stories she could tell,” another soft laugh, “I almost considered changing my major to mass communications a few times. The biggest thing we had in common was movies and we’d joke about making one together. She had a twin brother and both of them had hemophilia — Davis didn’t make it past the first week — it was difficult to keep going without DDVAP but we made do until we got to the California QZ.” A shudder went through you.

“About three years ago they said finding the medicine was near impossible. I believed it until a firefly proved them wrong. Then I got angry — I’d been paying extra for it. Working as many jobs as I could, all hours, going from door to door to assist at home patients and, of course-” You looked at Joel and paused, “She knew what would happen if she kept going without it.”

Your stomach sank. “She waited until I was doing a setup and — she just — yeah. When they burned the bodies, I asked for some ashes to keep. It might not all be hers, but it’s something. After that — after that I needed to leave. To get her home.”

Joel’s hand squeezed yours.

Ellie nodded her lips twitching before she turned around and started walking, “Welcome to team tragic backstories.”

Joel scoffed.

You’d expected both of them to leave when you passed the town sign. Waited for Joel to hand you your bag to wave goodbye and keep going. The further you got into town the harder it became to let go of his hand or look away from Ellie.

When you passed the courthouse, Ellie stared at the boarded up building.

“Booming town.”

You clenched Dana’s ashes. “It was a dead town before the outbreak. I went home with Dana every spring. This place wasn’t much, but it felt closer to home than anywhere else I’d been. To be honest though,” You stared down the road following the path of boarded windows and rusting cars, “It still looks the same.”

“Yeah,” The teenager ran towards a firewood sign, “Hey Joel,” She grinned.

“Don’t say it.”

“Got wood?”

He groaned, his hand rubbing over his face. Your own still entwined with his despite the chilled sweat between your palms.

“Ellie,” You nodded your chin towards another sign and she spun on her heels.

“Ha! Yes!” This sign had been there for as long as you could remember. Dana once showed pictures of her standing in front of it with a cheek splitting grin.

Joel kept on groaning.

It was an advertisement sign with an arrow pointed to the right, the letters faded, yellow spots between the lines and all the bulbs busted.

“What does it even mean?”

“A diner I think.”

When you got up with Ellie, she was grinning at it. “Hey Joel?”

He didn’t reply.

“Hey Joel.” She needled him and Joel sighed long and loud, eyes closing, chest rising and falling before he opened them again and looked at her dead on.

“What?”

“Want to put your meat in their oven?”

The noise he made had you doubled over in laughter, pulling your hand free from his to wipe at your eyes. Ellie looked proud, her eyebrows wiggling, grin the brightest you’d ever seen it and not even Joel dose cold water on this moment.

Come on in and put your meat in our oven here at Beavers All You Can Eat.

“They did that on purpose.”

“Well yeah,” Ellie clapped, “Had to draw such a lovely crowd somehow.”

She spun around, arms outstretched, her jacket tied around her waist, and it was mesmerizing to see Ellie with a calm to her. For a moment you swore you saw the girl Joel said she was before, the one who asked a million questions and jumped from thing to thing as they kept moving.

She’s fifteen.

God, she was a child in this bullshit of a world and it was amazing.

Both of them were.

You could stand the thought of staying behind as they kept going, of never hearing another pun or watching Joel teach Ellie how to hunt.

A choking feeling seized your throat.

This was it.

You’d put Dana in with her grandfather and you’d head back to California, or maybe stay here, live in a place that feels like home for a little longer until it all ends.

It will end. When Joel and Ellie leave — when you’re on your own again — it’ll end.

You couldn’t say a word as you led them towards the cemetery, your feet dragging, legs growing heavy the closer you got. Ellie and Joel are trading jokes back and forth, a revitalization that struck a chord in your heart. At least they’d be okay. They were before you and they will be after you, something that you knew with an unwavering truth.

Joel would do anything for Ellie and Ellie would do anything for Joel, and the beauty of it made your eyes burn.

Two people who saved each other.

You hoped they’d make it wherever they were going. You hoped it was somewhere safe, somewhere Joel could sit down and Ellie could be a kid. It could be a place with families, a homestead with teenagers Ellie could befriend and a job Joel could do that didn’t involve blood on his hands.

Maybe Ellie could watch 80s movies and listen to songs she’d hate while Joel strummed a guitar and told stories about his daughter. His brother could join them, they’d be free, this world would be a little brighter because of the smiles they’d created. Happiness.

The cemetery gates were open, looming closer as you walked, and the squeeze of your chest made it impossible to breathe.

You’re going to lose them.

Fuck, you’re going to lose them.

You couldn’t do this.

You couldn’t.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay, shh, it’s okay.” You were hyperventilating, heart pounding in your chest, lung seizing as your brain repeated that they were leaving you. That this was it. Again and again.

Joel was blurry, his face coming in and out of focus. His hands were cupping your cheeks and, oh, you were on the ground. The gravel dug into your knees through your jeans, an ache where it digs into your kneecap.

Joel was shushing you.

His thumbs brushing beneath your eyes, wiping away tears as he breathed, your own breath trying to sync with his. To your left you felt Ellie’s hand touching your shoulder, her palm a warm pressure that anchored you as the panic washed over you.

“Hey,” Joel’s voice dragged you back to the surface, the brown of his eyes centering you, Ellie’s hand held on tight, her knee pushed into your thigh, “You’re okay. You’re okay.”

“Please don’t leave me.” You cried, your chest caving in, heart plunging to your feet as body shaking sobs wrecked you from head to toe.

“Please,” You cover your mouth, trying to shove the words back in, but they fall out with a gasp, “Don’t leave me. Please.”

Joel’s arms are around you, lips pressed against your temple and the weight of Ellie clinging to your back keeps you from curling in on yourself.

Joel should have shot you, left you on that porch — bled out — that’d be less painful than the thought of them leaving, of them being okay somewhere else without you.

“Shhh.” Joel murmured in your ear. “Not going anywhere. I got you. We got you.”

He’d helped walk you into the cemetery, your head resting on his shoulder, his arm around your waist. Your stare looked a thousand yards away, mouth pressed into a thin line, your right hand holding onto Ellie’s.

It’d taken a bit for you to guide them towards Dana’s grandfather. They passed names and dates that stretched back hundreds of years but never past two thousand and three and didn’t hurt. That he could look at this place of rest and see decades of families who lost each other along the way.

Cremation was necessary now.

One headstone had a lamb on it with a blue bow around its neck.

Caleb Allen Malcolm.

Oct. 23rd to Nov 24th.

On the wings of an angel.

His stomach turned.

He held you tighter.

“There.” You clutched the vial of ashes in your left hand, Ellie guiding you towards the grave you were pointing while Joel moved behind you.

The headstone had an inscription of faith under the name and years of the man buried beneath the earth. Your fingers lingered over the dash between the birth date and death date, before digging in your jacket for a knife.

“When she was little, her grandfather would take her and Davis to Helena every other weekend. They’d get ice cream, go shopping, he’d buy them anything they wanted, then bring them back home and tuck them both into bed with a goodnight story. When I first visited, her Mom had been gone since she was born and her Dad — he might as well have been gone. Her grandfather thought — he didn’t even hesitate before he ushered us into his car and drove right to Helena. I’d never known a man more kind and sweet to those around him.”

Joel helped you dig a hole, pulling dirt away, going deep enough that the vial wouldn’t come back up in the next storm.

Your fingers trembled as you held it out. “I wish I could have gotten Davis back here, too. I’m sorry, Dana, I really am.”

You sat the vial down, pushing it into the dirt. Joel watched you pause, your fingers hovering over it as tears fell down your cheeks.

“Bye Dana.” Ellie whispered.

“Bye Dana.” He mumbled.

You let out a shuddering laugh. “Bye Dana.”

They walked for a while after that.

Joel monitored you, watched the way you’d looked down at your feet then back up at the sky. He’d imagined what you looked like before the outbreak, before the scarring, before everything and knew you were amazing either way.

There was a calm to you now.

“Please don’t leave me.”

A hot flash of guilt stabbed through his stomach, burned his blood down his arm and into his chest until he reached out to pull you into his arm and held you there. You didn’t move. Didn’t twitch, just let him press you to his chest and kiss the top of your head until that feeling dissolved.

Ellie had stopped and watched the two of you — that look on her face meant he was going to do some explaining, but the kid can wait. She didn’t seem to mind anyway if the nod of her head meant anything.

She walked a few feet ahead of them and tipped her head towards the sky.

Joel tilted your chin up to look at him. “Hi.”

“Hi.”

Your eye was red rimmed, he brushed his thumb over your cheek."I gotta ask you a question?"

“Yeah?”

He nodded, “We’re headed back to Wyoming, uh, we got somewhere we need to get to and I- well, uh, we-”

You kissed him.

He kissed you back.

“Wherever you two are going,” You whispered against his lips, “Is where I’m going.”

Joel kissed you again, deeper, holding you closer and swallowing the noise you made when his tongue swiped over your bottom lip.

When he pulled back to see you flushing, he grinned. “Yeah?”

You went in for another kiss, a smile turning up your mouth, hands sliding into Joel’s hair and he couldn’t think of anything better than knowing he’d have more of this - that you’d be with them.

That-

“JOEL!”

Both of you jumped apart and turned to Ellie. She’d started back towards the two of you in a rush, “Joel, someone-”

He heard shouting.

“Shit. Shit, okay, Ellie-”

“I know.” She weaved around him, reaching for your hand and dragging you along with her while Joel swung the rifle around to aim.

“Joel!”

“Go! I’ll follow.”

You stared at him for a beat and looked over his shoulder; three men stepping out from the tree line.

Joel aimed the gun their way. “Go.” One man aimed their own gun at him and grinned.

“Go. Now. I’ll catch up.”

One of the men shouted and Joel pulled the trigger waited until the man dropped and the other two turned to look at him then took off after you and Ellie.

The men shouted, voices loud, echoing off the trees and houses as the three of you ran between buildings, a few rounds going off. Joel grabbed Ellie’s arm and tugged her behind a fence, monitoring you as you turned the corner and pointed at a van across the way.

Another shot, more shouting, one man cussing and Joel pushed Ellie until you and her were taking off for the van.

He looked around the fence to see the men looking left and right.

“Look man,” one of them had a flannel shirt on, his hair pulled back in a greasy bun, “We just want to talk. Saw two ladies with you,” The other one cackled and Flannel shirt grinned, “Figured we’d get to know each other, yeah?”

When they stepped closer, Joel aimed. The shot missed, hitting the porch railing beside him. Both men ducked before growling and stomping towards the fence as Joel took off to lead them away from you and Ellie.

The men followed him, shouting, cursing, rounds being fired as he dodged a dog house and narrowly missed a lawn mower. Risking a chance to look back at where you and Ellie’s been, he could see the two of you running towards the trees and sighed.

Ellie was smart. She’d know when to hide and you had a gun. If anything, you could keep them away from you long enough for Joel to make his way back.

“Hey, man!” One of them shouted, “I don’t want to alarm you or nothing, but we ain’t the only ones looking for some.”

His blood ran cold.

Never in your whole life did you think you’d be doing cardio to this degree.

The last time you went jogging before the outbreak had been a misguided attempt at exercising with your sister. You nearly died (dramatically) and the word sweat didn’t cover how you felt, but this? This was something else.

Ellie stuck by your side, her hand clasped with yours, eyes darting left and right as she mumbled about bad timing and Joel not giving her a gun.

It made you laugh, which made Ellie, which made the mad dash the two of you were doing look unhinged. Neither of you had a set direction of where you were running., Ellie was trying to get you deeper into the trees while you were trying to stay closer to the road; you go too far in it’d be harder for Joel to find you — of course — those other men could find you as well.

There was another round of fire in the distance, birds scattering from trees, a lone cat darting from the left of you, and both you and Ellie followed its path into the trees. The ground littered with fallen limbs, scattered rocks, one tree laid prone, blocking the path which Ellie dodged, your feet narrowly sliding from beneath you as you turned to follow her.

There wasn’t much of a plan coming together in your head — instead a flash of a thought tumbled forward and had you reaching out to grab Ellie’s arm to pull her to a stop.

She aimed a wild look at you. “What-”

“Listen.” She fell silent.

There was shouting, a few stray shots followed by cussing and what sounded like Joel calling someone a very creative word you’d rather not repeat. Even though the look on Ellie’s face told you she heard it, anyway. Above all, you realized Joel was leading the men further away from you, the shouting growing fainter.

“He’s leading them away.”

“Will he be able to find his way back to us?”

“Ellie-”

“Yeah, it’s Joel, of course he will.”

You nodded, looking around you, hoping another idea will topple forwards and guide you where you needed to be. This kind of planning had never been your forte, you never even played shooting games or gone paint balling with friends. In your mind you’d spent most of your life already trying to survive. Why spend your free time doing it as well?

One game of Risk and you would have some idea of what you were doing.

Your eyes caught sight of a shed, further in the distance — if you made it there though whenever Joel could double back it’d be easier for him to find you. If you made it inside, you and Ellie could duck down, wait until the firing stops–

“Lookie here.”

You froze.

Two men walked towards you, one holding a bat and the other a red gasoline jug. It banged against his leg as he walked and the bat swung back and forth. Both of them had long, curling smirks that made your blood run cold. Ellie gripped your arm, nails digging in, her hands trembling as you moved her behind you.

“Ellie-” You whisper.

“Yeah?” You were walking the two of you back, keeping your eyes on the two men, making careful steps to avoid tripping or losing hold of Ellie.

One of them whistled.

“I have a gun in my bag.” The one with the bat moved closer, his eyes following you back and forth.

“Aren’t you a pretty one?” He sneered, “Bet the little bitch behind you could be good for something, too.” Bat guy made a kissing face, the other snickering at the act while swinging the jug on his shoulders.

Ellie was cursing, “I can’t find it.”

“Its inside the-”

“Now, now, you two telling secrets?” Bat Guy jumped towards you, hands reaching out to grab and you swung around, your bag sliding down your arm to knock into him. He stumbled sideways, knocking into the man beside him and tumbling them both to the ground.

His hand caught your ankle as you took off. You kicked at it, kicking harder when he shouted and let go.

He reached out again when you got up but missed, your knees protesting at the harsh way you took off running, Ellie ahead of you, avoiding trees while she threw a wary look over her shoulder. When she saw you coming towards her, a grateful shout echoed off the trees. Ellie slowed enough for you to catch up.

“Your knife!” She faltered for a beat, realization hitting her when you mimed stabbing.

She had the blade in her hand and spun with it as the bat guy knocked into you, you shoved at him, scratching, kicking, your nails dug into his eye and he screamed, blood splattered your face — you pushed again and he budged.

Ellie was standing over the gasoline guy, her knife limp in her hand, the man a bloody mess lying in the dirt.

“Ellie!” she turned her face falling as she ran towards you.

You ran towards her shouting for her to turn back around, you’d reached for her hand and something hard knocked into your back, a chill ran down your spine and you dropped, rolling sideways and over a dip that rolled you down a hill, the man tumbling after you, his feet skirting the ground in muddy streaks.

You reached out to stop yourself clawing at the dirt until you caught hold and pushed yourself up. Ellie was screaming for you, shrieking your name. The rumble of her running pulled you away from the man in front of you to dart back towards her and -

Your foot slipped, a red hot pain went through your stomach and you fell.

“NO!” Ellie screamed

She couldn’t stop the bleeding and you kept pushing her hands away. Why are you pushing her away?

“Stop!” There was shouting, gunfire and a dash of running and Ellie forgot how to breathe.

“Ellie-”

“NO! Come on, Joel is coming. He’s coming. Joel!”

You pushed at her hands again and Ellie looked up, saw the blood trickling from your mouth and shouted louder, screaming until her throat felt raw and holding her hand over the blood. Your hand touched her cheek, fingers tipping her to look down.

A smile, eyes soft, and Ellie couldn’t feel her limbs. Her ear ringing at the sight of blood, the gash above your eyebrow and the shine of your tearing eyes, “Hey, it’s okay. Ellie, it’s okay, but I need you to run, sweetie.”

“I’m not leaving you.” She choked, your face going blurry with tears, “Joel is coming. He’s coming and we can get you out.”

Your head tilted back, a gurgled cough splatter into the air and you cried out loud, your hand reaching down for Ellie’s and slipping through the blood to grab her wrists.

“Ellie,” Blood spilled between her fingers, “I need you to go.”

“No. No, no I’m not — hell no.”

“Ellie!” Joel’s voice grew closer, echoing through the woods, bouncing off trees and rocks.

“-hell no. I’m not doing it. JOEL!”

Your hand squeezed tighter. “I can’t move, Ellie, you can’t drag me out of here. You need to go.”

Shuffling moved closer, a shout and a stumble before steady foot falls and Joel knelt at her side and folding his hands over hers.

“Ellie, grab the bag!”

She couldn’t move, her hands held in place, feeling yours squeeze them once, twice — Joel shouted again.

“Let me get you up. I can pack the wound and we can make it back to the houses.” He pulled Ellie’s hands away, shuffling until she moved out of the way. His hands went to your face, down your neck to hover over your shoulders.

“Ellie, grab the bag-”

“Stop.” Joel froze and Ellie curled back to you, your eyes looking up, smiling at Joel as he curls closer to you, “Thank you.”

“No.”

Ellie choked on a sob, her eyes burning, her throat aching from holding back screams, “You’re welcome.”

Joel kept muttering, hands moving over you, up your face and back down, his mouth working until you grabbed his hands, holding them to your lips, and smiled. “Be safe on your way to Wyoming.”

Your head dropped.

He ran down the street, stumbled over bodies, slamming into invisible objects.

Ellie had gone still, her cheeks streaked with tears, her eyes locked on the blood on her hands.

The rush of liquid behind him made his lungs seize, panic rising over him.

HIs hands came away covered in your blood, the cold mud seeping into the knees of his jeans. You were still.

“Joel.” That was Ellie was running ahead with wide eyes.

He didn’t know what to do. His mind had frozen, stuck in this moment. You should have had more time.

“Joel.” Tess dabbing his cheek and shaking her head.

He helped Ellie up, checking her over, looking at her ankle, then pulled her into his arms, feeling her body shake.

“Joel.” Tommy called him in the middle of the night, remorse in his voice.

The walk through town felt long. Their steps slowed down the further they got, and he counted the miles, wanting to get further away.

“Daddy.” Sarah going still in his arms

Ellie had gone dead quiet beside him, that far-off look guiding her forward, and he swallowed down the anger in his throat.

The rush of liquid dampened His skin, and he tasted the copper tang of blood. It filled his mouth, clogged his nose; drowning him.

He stopped them at the sound of something running, crouching down, sliding her behind him -

A deer ran out in front of them.

GROVE-ING TOGETHER HOLIDAY SPECIAL : DECEMBER IN ASPEN PART TWO

My mom, dad and sister got here late last night. I sensed some tension between them as well. This vacation isn’t starting off as great as I thought it would….

Mama Juni, mom, and I are all up making a festive breakfast for the house. We all get to talking (venting) about what’s bothering us…

Juniper: Koda, I’m sorry if I upset you yesterday. I didn’t mean to, I figured you knew…. Dakota: It’s okay mom, you didn’t do anything wrong. Now Theo….

Juniper: So, he never told you he came home? Dakota: No. I don’t think he even responded to my text I sent on thanksgiving to be quite honest... I vividly remember wishing him a happy thanksgiving and that I hope he was doing well.

Juniper: Maybe he had a good reason? Dakota: I have a good feeling I know the reason, seeing you mentioned “friends.” Dakota: I’m letting it go for now. It’s whatever. Juniper: Dana, how have you been? Dana: Pretty good. I’m so excited to be here with my grandbabies. I feel like I don’t get to see them often…. Dakota: Mom, you know you are welcome to visit at any time? Dana: I know. I just think it would be easier if we moved to SS… but your dad doesn’t agree. Dakota: That’s the tension I felt when you got here last night… Dana: I don’t understand why we can’t just move there. He works from home, and rarely has to go into the office. Dakota: Dad really loves Copperdale. He tried to convince Theo and I to move there after we left Windenburg. Dana: Oh, I wish you had, then I wouldn’t be dealing with his stubbornness… Dakota and Juniper: *Laughs*

Dana: How is the ranch, Juni?

Juniper: Doing very well. Umber has been pretty busy with that and other stuff…. Dakota: Mom…. What’s wrong? Juniper: Theo has a sister. It became dead silent for about 10 seconds. Dakota: I’m sorry, what? Dana: How? Dakota: ???

*Juniper lets out a big sigh*

Juniper: A young woman reached out to your dad via Simbook, telling him she thinks he’s her father. Dakota: Oh my god? Dakota: What did dad say? Juniper: He couldn’t say much because he was in shock. He didn’t think he had a daughter out there… Dana: Well, did he and her go get tested?

Juniper: They planned to while they were here. She is conveniently here with her family as well we found out. Dakota: She’s here in Aspen? Juniper: Yep. Dakota: Mom, are you okay? Juniper: Yeah, I’m fine. I have to admit, I have been slightly disconnected from dad. Dana: Wait, is she older or younger than Theo because that would mean… Juniper: She’s older, by two years. Ellis: Smells great in here ladies. Dana: Why do you guys get a day away from everyone? Ellis: Its not really a day sweetie, we just want to hangout at the tavern we found… Juniper: We weren’t invited? Umber: Well… no because we wanted to catch up like I’m sure you guys did this morning… Dakota: *Grunts under her breath* Theo walks up behind her and wraps his arms around her waist. Theo: Hey baby… Dakota: Hi. Theo: Can you come upstairs with me really quick? Umber: Ooohhh Theo: Get your mind out of the gutter… Dakota: Sure. Theo and I head upstairs to our room. Dakota: Is something wrong? Theo: I just wanted to talk about what my mom had mentioned, about Windenburg…? Dakota: It’s fine. No point to talk about it 10 years later, you know. Theo: Baby… Dakota: Although hearing you brought friends was interesting… I can imagine who they were… Dakota: It’s okay Theo. I promise. Dakota: I’m going to get the kids situated with breakfast, and then I’ll grab us some food. I head back downstairs as Theo’s dad is walking up. Umber: I take it she didn’t want to talk about it? Theo: Yep. She’s doing that thing where she acts like she doesn’t care but I know she does…. Theo: It’s going to bother her until she talks about it. Bruce Willis and Spencer Breslin team up to solid effect, in a film that produces amusement and wholesomeness. I find the premise very interesting, it’s a cool concept. While they might not executed to 100% perfection, what’s given is entertaining to see unfold. There are some very sweet scenes, also. Willis is, as you’d expect, the best part of this, but I think Breslin does a grand job too. Let's overly complicate this: Dana Winters has an unnamed sister. I propose that Pamela Manson is that sister. An identical twin sister.

This means that Sam Manson is - genetically speaking - Dana's daughter. At least, it'll show up that way on DNA tests.

Damian discovers that Tim is his twin brother's nephew. This makes him Tim's uncle by technicality.

In the meantime, Danny has just broken up with yet another partner. This time, he has a daughter: Danielle Garrett. He really regrets allowing his partner to name her. Dan and Ellie think it's hilarious, though.

He decides to move to Gotham, where his sister lives. He's really struggling at the moment, and Jazz agreed to help him with the children. The kids are very excited to be living closer to their favourite Aunt Jazz! Dan and Ellie are no longer allowed to babysit. This is also the reason that no Fenton is allowed within the city limits of Fawcett City. They will be arrested on sight if they return.

Danny has a thing for dangerous woman and whirlwind romances, the longest of which was Sam. The two broke up after the spark had died (pun not intended) the break up was a little messy and they're barely on speaking terms the thing is Sam left Danny with a pair of twins to look after. A few years of being a single dad and Danny and Valerie hook up.

The break up is also messy and leaves Danny with another child. His final romantic relationship came when the twins were twelve and his son was six with a woman named Tala al Ghul. Danny was smitten with her and was going to ask her to marry him when she just suddenly broke things off and left him with a child, the thing is he's sure that this little one isn't his but he can see that they were touched by some form of ectoplasm so they're his baby now.

Several years later and Damian is assigned by school to do a family tree project and to ensure he's the only blood son, after some teasing from Jason made him curious, when he discovers he had a twin brother that his mother claimed was still born and the pits failed to revive him. He was content learning this even though it made him a little sad. Imagine his shock when a few days later a boy that looks almost exactly like him transfers into his class. Tala has some explaining to do

Here Lies my Legacy Save.

Computer died, lost years of play, and so the records I was keeping are now done being collected and are now simply kept.

I WAS renaming my sims by generation because I couldn't tell who was what generation in gameplay and it made it weird when they had the same childhood crush as their children. So the first generation was A-named, next was B, etc.

I did rename some of them funky, I didn't rename others, and some I tried to rename but failed because I couldn't get the names to stick.

All of Gen C were born to played Sims.

Last/family names were mixed from the parents, whose were mixed from their parents. Manning and Falcon became Falman, and when Falman and Blackburn got together, they became Falburn.

When two of the same names have babies (usually because sibling affairs with in-laws), I mixed it up. Once, it was a lady who seduced a mother and son, so Beckman plus Scales became Scaleman and Beckscales. I tend to keep it at 1-5 syllables at most, generally 2, so it's not too messy, but I definitely start losing great grandparent names.

The 'official' records are: Snapshots, where I recap a household at time of switching families and Eulogies, where I recap a Sim's lifetime after their deaths.

Families always went Teen Daughter, Child Son in the beginning. I tried to go by household, but it turns out that those constantly change in ways that don't record well. ^ ^;

"tell me why you did it!" { v ;; the princess and the moon.

Prince walked away from Luna. That was something he was very good at, especially instead of facing an argument. Although maybe he wasn’t that good because it didn’t take long for Luna to follow him. “Just tell me why you did it!” Prince didn’t have to explain himself. Honestly, he wished he didn’t have to. Why couldn’t Luna just understand? The woman was his mother. Regardless of everything she may have done, or the things he’s said about her, that was still his mother. If Prince had spent that money on clothes, or a holiday or something stupid Luna wouldn’t care. Why couldn’t she force herself to not care that he gave it away? If he gave it to a charity would she argue with him? “Because she’s my mum, Luna. Same reason I let her into my house when I was a teenager and same reason I gave her money when she came back again. God, let it rest.” But Luna couldn’t let it rest. It irritated him. They weren’t exactly broke, giving some money to his mother didn’t mean they were missing a mortgage payment or taking food out of their kids mouths. Prince walked away again but it so futile because Luna just went with him, chewing his ear off about his poor decision-making. He stopped walking. It was a good thing the kids weren’t home. Prince turned back to her. “Maybe things will be different this time, alright?” It was such an embarrassing hope that Prince immediately wished he didn’t say it especially when he saw the look on his wife’s face. There was no way she believed Elizabeth would stick around, not that he even needed her to anymore. He was grown now, his oldest child was almost grown up now. Prince didn’t need his mother anymore. That didn’t change how he felt, in fact it made him more lenient to helping her out because he wasn’t a kid who needed his mother anymore. He was an adult, who couldn’t help himself when she came around. “Can you stop fucking judging me? You’re my wife. Our son already hates me, I don’t need you to join him.” And maybe Prince was just a masochist. Maybe with Leo ignoring him, which hurt beyond belief, Prince was just chasing more pain by being back in touch with the first person to ever hurt him and was bound to do it again. Or maybe while he was already hurting was a good time to allow her to let him down again because surely Leo would speak to him again and the day that happened Prince would be so happy that he’d forget all about his mothers constant using and abusing of him. “Maybe I’m a shitty parent, just like her.” On a certain level Prince knew that wasn’t true (especially not the same level as his own mother) but sometimes he had to wonder if Leo would really stop talking to him over something so stupid like Eli had hinted at or if Prince just wasn’t a good enough dad for his son to need. “Maybe that’s why I did it. Who knows? I’m done arguing about it either way.” He grabbed his car keys and claimed he was going to collect Sage despite how they both knew she didn’t need to be collected for another two hours but it was the only excuse he could use to finally walk away from the fight.

Katie was enjoying a stroll on the beach. She could admire how all out Ellis and Dana went on this wedding, picking such a beautiful spot. She was happy for him. She heard her name being called and beamed when she spotted Ellis, jogging down towards her on the beach. She greeted him warmly and he joined her on her walk. He asked where Leo was and she shrugged, assuming he was off with the twins having a drink somewhere. Ellis nodded, and Katie noticed he seemed nervous. “Wedding jitters?” She joked. He laughed but she could tell it was fake so she made the huge mistake of asking him what was wrong. “If I told you I was in love with you and wished it was you marrying me instead of Dana, what would you say?” He blurted and Katie stopped dead in her tracks. She looked all around her, maybe she was being pranked because this was crazy. She looked to Ellis with wide eyes. They were romantic in college but it was never a relationship. In fact he was the one who always said he’d never ask her out because of her feelings for Leo. She took a step away from him shaking her head. “I love Leo.” She simply commented and Ellis rolled his eyes, following her in her step. “But how long is that going to last? It never works out with you two.” Katie felt herself getting annoyed. Who was he to comment on her relationship with Leo? Just because she spent endless nights bitching and moaning about her poor broken heart when she was twenty. “It’s already worked out. I’m with Leo!” She was literally cradling a baby bump thanks to Leo, and Ellis thought it was right to try convince her to leave him somehow. “Katie. I’m in love with you. I tried to fight it in college because of him but I can’t marry Dana knowing there’s someone in the room that I love more.” Katie scoffed and started walking away from Ellis. Why invite her to his wedding if he felt this way? Granted, she thought they were good friends and would have thought it weird for her friends to get an invite and not her but she’d have preferred that to what he was doing now. Ellis called after her and chased her. “You’re getting married in the morning Ellis. Don’t do this!” He grabbed her hand. “Not if you give me a reason not to.” Katie shook her hand free. Why was there always someone confessing her love to her at the most inappropriate of times and on a beach? She couldn’t give him a reason because she absolutely did not feel the same way as him. At least when Leo was doing this it was because he knew deep down she felt the same even if at the time she wouldn’t admit it. She didn’t say anything more to Ellis as she marched away from him. Katie had been right about Leo being off with the twins drinking so she didn’t get a chance to talk to him about what happened. She wasn’t even sure they should attend the wedding but before she could even open up about that, Ava was at their door forcing Katie to get ready so they could enjoy the festivities. Katie was in between a rock and a hard place but regardless she got ready. When she came out of the bathroom in her dress, she beamed when Leo smiled at her. He placed a hand on her belly and kissed her and she momentarily forgot anything else that was going on. It was when they got on the lift to go down to the wedding hall that she even remembered what happened the day before. They all piled off the lift and she lied and pretended she forgot her phone and would catch up with them, clicking on the floor Ellis was on. She knocked on his door. “You’re still getting married?” Katie asked incredulously when he pulled it open. He invited her in and against her better judgement she accepted. She was still his friend after all. “I can give you a reason not to get married,” Katie started and when she saw his eyes light up she immediately rushed to her point, “you don’t want to. You may think you’re in love with me but maybe you’re just not in love with Dana. I thought, for a split second, that I loved Cheryl’s dad because it was so easy with him but when I look at Leo, and the life I have with him it’s always been him who I loved. I don’t have any doubts in my mind about him. You have doubts about Dana and for that reason alone, not because of anyone else, you shouldn’t marry her.” The lift dinged as the doors bounced open and Katie, somewhat rushed, found her way to her friends. Everyone sipped on champagne and Leo even had an alcohol-free glass waiting for Katie. She appreciated the thought and took it from him but she was quick to get to her point. “We’ve gotta get out of here.” They were all understandably confused. “This weddings not going to happen, and I may be the reason for that so I don’t want to be standing here when Dana finds that out. I’ve got precious goods to protect here.” She signalled her pregnant belly. The car ride home was awkward and Katie didn’t understand why. It wasn’t her fault and for once it wasn’t just her painting herself innocent. This really wasn’t her fault. She sighed, after twenty minutes of dead silence. “What’s up your ass?” She retorted. Leo didn’t speak. She laughed, annoyed at his attitude. “Come on, Leo.” “Tell me why you did it.” Katie was taken aback. She already explained what happened and sure, she could understand his irritation at her being alone with her ex-fling and him confessing his love. That was why Katie had waited to tell him what happened until they were already on the way home. “Because I felt bad for her. You think I stopped the wedding because I want him or something?” The expression on his face was answer enough to her question. “Leo, my ankles are swollen and my bra size has practically doubled because you’ve put a baby in me. I think it’s pretty late for me to start realising I’m in love with other people.” She rested her head against her hand, staring out the window as they drove. “I’d probably wait til I have it before I start looking elsewhere.” She attempted to joke.

“You’re such a baby. You obviously love her.” Prince ignored Valerie but the expression on his face didn’t. He already had Luna trying to get him to confess that often enough, he didn’t need other people chiming in, too. At least he could use this to prove he was right about not wanting to tell their friends. This was so much worse than only having Luna to argue with about his so-called feelings. “This is so embarrassing Prince, why can’t you just admit it? At least you’re in a real relationship. None of the rest of us can say that.” Prince glared at her. “Except Luna, I guess.” And speak of the devil and she will appear. The back door opened and Luna walked out. Prince pursed his lips together and rolled his eyes. He wanted to walk away but he was comfortable. Normally he’d acknowledge Luna but he wasn’t going to now that Valerie was trying to psychoanalyse their relationship. “Luna, has he ever told you he loves you?” Prince was shocked she was being so forward. He looked at Luna. “Don’t answer that.” He had told her he loved her. He’s told her at least three times which probably made it redundant that in every other argument he swore he didn’t. He only said it in anger, and once when it was just the two of them in bed together, giggling and kissing and acting like a normal couple and he’d kissed her forehead gently when he murmured it in her ear. Valerie seemed exasperated which Prince thought was weird. If anyone wanted to fight with him about his feelings it should at least be Luna and everyone else could just mind their own business. Not his friends though. No, never his friends. He glanced at Luna, no expression on his face now. “Did you need something?” He asked, short with her. He wanted her to go back inside because he already knew what Valerie was about to pull. “I know it’s none of my business but I would like you two together so much more than I already do if he wasn’t so mean.” Princes eyes hadn’t moved from Luna. He was sure she agreed with Valerie. “You know last week he said you smell nice,” Valerie laughed and Prince felt like he was making fun of her, “and that your accent is sexy especially when you insult him in Spanish.” Prince glared, yet again. Yes, he said that but he never said it to Luna; in fact he told her the Spanish was irritating. “And that you always steal his shirts and he doesn’t know why but he doesn’t care because you look good in them. And he said-“ “Valerie, please fuck off.” Prince snapped. Valerie was probably more annoying than Cassie at this point. She didn’t fuck off but instead she tried to continue to quote Princes embarrassing admissions. Prince was now done hanging out with his friends. He flung his cigarette to the ground and stood up, grabbing Lunas hand as he made his way back inside Matt’s home. He didn’t pull her with him but let her decide if she wanted to go along, which of course she did because the pair couldn’t say no to each other. He gave her a chance to grab her stuff before they started headed to his place. Thankfully, she could tell he was annoyed and didn’t say anything straight away as they walked, barely holding hands with just their fingers. As Prince stuck his key in the door she finally addressed it. “Did you really say all that stuff about me?” Prince glared at her but it was ten times softer than the twenty times he just glared at Val. “Shut up.” He grumbled, stepping aside to let her into his flat first. The door was barely closed before he was pulling her back against it to press a kiss to her lips. They didn’t even make it as far as his bedroom, the pair getting lost in each other on his couch in the living room. Pandora would not be happy had she come home at any point. Prince pulled Luna onto his lap. It would be embarrassing if anyone walked in now because they were breathless, beaming and very very close to being fully unclothed. He cupped her face, kissing her softer than he had in the last while. “You do smell nice.” He confirmed Valerie’s rumour spreading. He was aware saying that confirmed everything else that was said but as he gazed at Luna now, his fingers brushing her hair out of her face, and just a hint of a smile in his eyes, he didn’t care.

“Ellis, stop!” Katie squealed, rolling away from him in the bed as she giggled loudly. She hoped she wasn’t keeping anybody awake. Her and Ellis were wide awake, partly from how giddy they both were but partly from the white powder they’d shared at the club. The whole house was coupled off, both the twins had girls in their beds and Leo was downstairs visiting with his girlfriend sharing the pull out sofa together. Katie had Ellis in her bed but they were by no means a couple, they both were well aware of that. That didn’t stop them having fun. Katie rolled out of bed and Ellis grabbed her wrist to try pull her back. She laughed loudly, tripping as he playfully yanked at her. “Stop! Shhh, everyone’s sleeping.” She couldn’t stop laughing. “I’m thirsty.” She pulled his shirt over her and slipped on a pair of socks to go downstairs. She didn’t get far alone, Ellis catching up to her at the top of the stairs, lifting her onto his back as he carried her down the stairs. They shushed each other while trying to contain their laughter. The piggy back down the stairs was probably a bad idea with how inebriated they both were but they somehow made it to the kitchen, Katie covering her mouth passing the living room to avoid waking Leo and his stupid girlfriend. Ellis dropped Katie onto the counter, kissing her before going to the fridge to pull out the jug of water, and two glasses. She watched him but all the while she was hyper aware that Leo was in the room next door, probably holding his girlfriend as they slept. It was a real mood dampener but Ellis managed to keep a smile on her face. She tried to drink her water but Ellis kept whispering in her ear, making her chuckle and practically choke. She put a hand on his shoulder, hiding her face there as she tried to stifle her laughter. Someone clearing their throat spooked the pair and they turned to see Leo standing in the doorway. Katie’s lit-up face faltered slightly, her smile fading somewhat. Ellis turned back to face Katie, giving her a wink. This was why they weren’t a couple, he knew about her feelings for Leo and fully supported it. Ellis announced he was going back to bed, not expecting an audience when he came downstairs in just his boxers. Katie couldn’t help but to continue laughing at him, watching him walk away. An awkward air fell between her and Leo as her laughter died with Ellis’s exit. She smiled softly at Leo. “I’m sorry, I hope we didn’t wake you.” She was still a little giggly. Leo assured her he was already awake but she only half believed him. She felt a little uncomfortable, unsure why. She held up the jug beside her and asked if he was thirsty. It was weird that she didn’t know what to say when he stood next to her, both drinking in silence. “Did Ximena have fun tonight?” Katie asked. She knew Leo would be sceptical of her but it was all she could think to say. Leo nodded and she was surprised by his next question. “Did you really say all that stuff about me?” Katie recalled the start of the night. She’d been working so she had had to meet the group out later. The twins invited Leo up to celebrate with the rest of the group for the end of their exams and while Leo wasn’t in college and Ximena didn’t attend the same one, they were happy to join for a night out. Katie was nervous about seeing Leo and Ximena together so she’d taken the liberty of pre-drinking at work, taking advantage of the free shots her manager allowed her to have before she would take off for the night. When she arrived at the club, she went straight to the smoking area to find her friends. She spotted Eli first, rushing to hug him and his girlfriend in her tipsy state. Inside, on the dance floor Katie could see Kendra and Ava with a few more of the girls but Katie wanted to say hi to Leo first. And just as she approached Leo, who hadn’t spotted her yet, he got up and headed inside towards the bar which meant she was now headed for Ximena but Katie couldn’t exactly reroute herself without making it obvious. She sat down on the bench next to Ximena, greeting her warmly. “It’s nice of you guys to come up.” Things between Katie and Ximena were awkward because she knew Ximena could tell how crazy in love with Leo Katie was but did that really matter if her boyfriend didn’t feel the same? It was certainly one-sided and Katie was respectful of the relationship to not act on it. She followed Ximenas gaze to where Leo was at the bar inside. “I know you probably won’t believe me because you probably think I’m like, in love with your boyfriend, but you guys look great together,” she spotted Eli looking at her with a raised brow, knowing she was lying, and it maybe should have been then where Katie would have realised her manager definitely gave her too many shots before she arrived here, but unfortunately she did not realise, “Leo’s great!” She glared at Eli who was still looking at her, about to be very amused by her oncoming drunken ramble. “If you were going between cousins you definitely got the best one.” Katie went onto list Leo’s good qualities that Ximena definitely already knew. “He’s so nice, and funny, and,” Katie probably rambled the whole time Leo was at the bar and she didn’t even remember half of what she said. Katie went bright red and covered her face with her hands. “Oh, Leo! I’m so sorry. I was just trying to be nice, I didn’t mean to embarrass you. Was she mad? Oh, god.” Suddenly she wanted Ellis back to keep her in her giddy mood and not this cringing she was doing instead. Katie pretty much refused to look at Leo. She couldn’t tell if he was asking because he was pissed or just to know. She couldn’t even remember everything she said and she just hoped she didn’t make her feelings for him too obvious though she knew she did. Katie was so desperately in love with Leo and hiding that was an impossible task.

"I overheard your conversation." { v ;; the princess and the moon.

Prince exhaled a cloud of smoke as he rested his head against the back of the couch, feeling a whole other level of relaxed. Across from him, Matt and Valerie passed a joint between them while Prince had his own pinched between his fingers. “So, you and Luna.” Valerie broached the topic cautiously and to everyone’s surprise the mention of Lunas name immediately forced a smile onto Princes face, his eyes flickering closed as he thought about her. “How’s that going?” Prince shook his head, almost in disbelief that this was a question that could be asked, still smiling. “She’s just- god, she’s so- she’s just it, you know?” Surely he was making no sense. He took another pull from the joint in his fingers and lifted his head up to look between the pair sitting on his couch. “She’s fucking unbelievable. And she wants me! Can you fucking believe it? I keep waiting to wake up and for her to just…” Prince speaks softly, his gaze going to the floor, “say sike! Gotcha! But everyday she’s there and she still wants me and I’ve done fucking not one thing to deserve it but fuck me, I love her.” Prince had definitely smoked too much and was over sharing but Matt and Val were trusted parties, in his stoned state he still knew these words weren’t going to come back to haunt him. “I’m gonna spend the rest of my life with her. She’s the only one.” A few minutes later, Luna is falling beside Prince on the chair he’s sprawled on. His arm naturally snakes around her waist to pull her onto his lap, his lips meeting hers. He looks at Matt and Valerie and they pick up on his gaze alone, getting up and leaving the couple alone. He beams up at Luna. “Did you get prettier since I saw you last?” Was that possible in thirty minutes? It seemed like it was. She joked that maybe it was him that got more high since he saw her last and he chuckled softly, bringing her hand to his lips so he could press a gentle kiss to the back of her hand. “I overheard your conversation.” She confessed and he furrowed his eyebrows, trying to think of what conversation that was. Maybe it was the one where he said he loved her and couldn’t believe he was the one she wanted. Must be that one. He hummed, his hand going up to cradle her face, fingers pushing her hair back. “Yeah?” His eyes met hers, flickering down to gaze at her lips before going back to her eyes. “Never thought I’d be saying that shit to our friends, did you?” He joked. His joint was near to the end so he placed it between his lips and pulled, offering the end of it to Luna if she wanted. “Fucking meant every word.” He looked at her again. “You’re unreal.”

Katie and Jake weren’t having a particularly good time at this party, considering they were spending most of their time holed up in some bedroom fighting with each other. “If you weren’t ready to be with me then you should have just said!” Jake argued with Katie. She was getting exasperated with trying to convince him she only had eyes for him “What does that mean?” “We can’t get within twenty feet of Leo Moon without having to act like fucking strangers. I can’t even hold your hand if he’s in the next room. How do you think that makes me feel?” Katie understood Jakes frustration. She never intended to drop her friendship with Leo for the sake of a guy but she also didn’t predict their sensitivity towards him would have to last this long. Katie argued that it didn’t matter how they acted in front of other people since they knew how they felt about each other themselves, to which Jake scoffed. He argued if it didn’t matter then it didn’t matter how they acted around Leo. “You’re still in love with him.” Jake commented, angry. Katie shook her head. “You are! You practically light up when he walks into the room, I can’t kiss my girlfriend because god forbid the guy starts crying or something.” Why was Jake yelling at her right now? So she put some distance between them once she saw Leo across the room. So what? “I do love him, but just as a friend. I could have been with Leo and I chose you. Did you forget that? I’ve known him my whole life and I basically destroyed my friendship with him so you and I could be together. That doesn’t make you feel wanted by me?” Her and Leo had made up already so their friendship wasn’t technically ruined but it was at risk there for a while. “You didn’t end things with him to be with me. You did it because you were mad at him. God, I should have known one day you’d stop being mad and now I’m the idiot who asked you to be my girlfriend knowing you love some other guy.” “So you regret making me your girlfriend?” “Oh, don’t do that. Don’t try to make me the bad guy here by putting words in my mouth.” Jake stepped away from Katie, getting more and more annoyed with her and she could feel it too. “I love you, Katie, but how am I supposed to feel?” Katie shook her head again, feeling herself getting upset. “Why, when someone says ‘I love you’ does it sound like a fucking insult? Like that’s a problem for you.” Tears threatened her eye ducts. Jake was quiet for a moment. Katie watched him, trying to work out what he was thinking. “Why did you say someone?” Katie furrowed her eyebrows, confused at his question. “You said when someone tells you they love you it’s a problem. Not when I say it. Because Leo said it to you too, like it was an insult- a problem? Right?” Katie sighed. “Your obsession with Leo is fucking draining, Jake.” “Your obsession with him is draining! Do you not care how this makes me feel?” “Can you please stop yelling at me?” Katie was hurt. “Why is nothing I do ever good enough?” “For me, or for him?” Katie shoved Jake then, a tear streaming down her cheek. “Fuck you!” They’d been at this long enough and clearly Jake had had enough. She could tell he was biting back an insult before he just shook his head and stormed out of the room. Getting into a screaming match with Jake at this party was not something that Katie planned on doing. She threw her shoe at the wall after him, not expecting it to hit him since he was already gone but just acting out of anger. A quiet sob broke from her throat and she hid her crying face in her hands, her elbows resting on her knees. She heard shuffling and felt a wave of relief come over her that Jake had come back to apologise. She looked up and through her sad puffy eyes she saw it wasn’t Jake standing there, but Leo. “Oh, god.” She uttered, mortified that he was finding her like this. She watched as he picked up the shoe she’d flung and slowly walked towards her. She sniffled. She watched through teary eyes as he slipped the shoe back onto her foot, grateful for how gentle with her he was being. How long had he been near this room? She sniffled again. “I overheard your conversation.” He admitted, confirming he’d been around long enough to know what happened. She would be embarrassed if she weren’t so upset. She also made sure to note that him overhearing the fight meant he overheard Jake telling Katie he loved her and Katie trying to argue that she didn’t love Leo. Katie however was still extremely upset. She had tears streaming down her cheeks and she had to force herself to take a breath, in which another small sob came out making her look like a total idiot in front of Leo right now. “I’m sorry.” She uttered, her voice breaking. She felt the bed dip beside her as Leo sat down. Jake would be so irritated about this, especially when she felt Leo’s hand on her back. It should have been comforting but considering he was the topic of their argument and heard her trying to argue she wasn’t in love with him just made her feel even worse and made her cry harder. “God,” her voice cracked between crying, “I’m sorry you had to hear that.” She spoke through muffled cries with her face in her hands still.

"Remember, just ignore Melissa, she was always jealous Ellis choose you" Dom says as she pours Dana a drink, Dana sneers "I've handled her for sixteen years Dom, one more night isn't going to tip me over the edge. Plus, I married for love, she married for money.....five times before she met Jacob!" Dana smugly smirks.

"She reveals in others' misery, but ignore her!" the doorbell rings, Dom rushes to answer it, Kellie, Selina, Nancy, Annabelle and Melissa are there.

They flow through into the kitchen, Selina pulled Dana in for a hug, "hi sweetie, how are you and the boys?"

"Hey lovely, I'm alright and the boys are good thanks. What about you? How's Liam?"

She pulls Dana away from the girls, Dana quarks her brow at her, "you are my best friend, so I guessed maybe you could help me tonight?" Dana nods curiously, "this needs to stay between us, I can't drink tonight because I'm pregnant!" Dana was about to squeak, but she stopped herself. Her eyes glass over because she knew how long Liam and Selina trying and the struggles they had gone through to keep trying.

She pulled her in for a hug, "I'm so happy for you both! Congratulation!" the both of them get a bit teary, "thank you, I need your help with the girls. I don't want to tell them before twelve weeks. If I don't drink they will get suspicious..."

"I will get all your drinks tonight, don't worry!" Dana grins, "come on, let's get back to the others" Dana pulls her back towards the girls.

Keeping her promise and kept pouring Selina's drinks, "alright Dana?" Melissa takes a seat next to where Dana was "yup, you?" she vaguely answers her knowing she is only after information on Ellis "me? I'm great thanks...so how's the kids and the husband?"

"The boys are fine!" she doesn't tell her about Ellis, instead she wanders over to Selina with her drink, "what did she want?" Selina asks as she took the glass from her hand, "asking how the boys and Ellis are!" she hissed through gritted teeth.

"She's jealous of you, she always has been since Ellis asked you out and not her all those years ago"

"Ellis would never go near her, especially every stunt she's pulled over the years!" Dana smugly smirk.

A little later...

"Why don't we play a round of never have I ever?" Kellie says a little tipsy, "Yes! Let's go and take this into the living room!" Dom calls the girls through.

"I'll take care of the shots, Selina you can help me!" Dana holds Selina back, Dana fills two plates with plastic shot glasses, one plate she loads with vodka and gin shots and another with water, "take from the plate with the red flowers, Selina!"

"Won't the girl suss it out?" Selina asked, "I have a plan!" she winks at her as they take the plates of shots through, "right girls, I've loaded these two plates with three different shots, you'll get vodka, gin or just tap water. I've mixed them up, so there are different shots on each plate!" she places one on one side of the table and the water shots in front of Selina.

"I'll go first, then we will work out way round, never have I ever cheated!" Nancy looks around the group only Melissa drinks, the girls look at her, "it was in college years ago!" Melissa tells them like it isn't a big deal.

"I guess it's my turn, never have I ever slept with an ex after splitting up with them" Dom had said this so Melissa had to drink again, Dana raises her glass to her lips as well as Kellie, Annabelle, and Melissa. Dom looks at Dana in horrible, "what?! When?!"

"After the last girls night, it had been five months. I called Ellis and he was happy to oblige" Dom's jaw dropped, "how did we not know about this?" she asked her.

"I knew Shane told me, he saw Ellis the day after and Shane said he had a spring in his step and a huge smile on his face" Nancy winks at her, "sorry, I knew too, but we are best friends so!" Selina shrugs.

"Moving on, never have I ever had a Onlyfans page!" Melissa gives Kellie the side eye, knowing Kellie will have to drink, "so what?!" Dom roll her eyes at Melissa as Kellie drinks, "my body, my choice!" Kellie shrugs.

Selina looks pissed off with Melissa, "my turn! Never have I ever slept with someone over sixty" Selina looks at Melissa, who sips her drink, Dana hides her smirk behind her glass.

"Me next, never have I ever slept with more than one guy!" Dana grins, knowing the whole group will have to drink "that's not fair! Not all of us found our soulmate at fifteen!" Nancy playfully teases her.

"So much for soul mates! They aren't even together anymore!" Melissa reminds them, "they might not be, but I don't think Ellis will get with anyone else." Selina nudges Dana.

"Never have I ever been arrested!" Kellie watches the group, Dom, Annabelle and Melissa drink. Dana looks to Annabelle, "you work for the police!"

Annabelle smirks, "I do, it wasn't an official arrest it was more an intimate one. Jacques used his work handcuffs on me role playing! Still counts?"

"Well, if it does looks like I'm taking a shot too!" Dana picks one off the table and knocks it back "what a waste of police time!" Dana grins at Annabelle and the pair start to giggle.

The game continues on.

Later in the kitchen, "why wasn't I told about Ellis scratching an itch?" Dom teases her, "no one was suppose to know...Selina only knew because she caught him leaving the house the next morning"

"You still at least fancy him, then?" she quizzes her friend, Dana doesn't answer her, but it's written all over her face, "you still love him!" she mischievously grins at her, "you do!"

"I can't just turn those feelings off can I?!" Dom wraps her arms around her friend.

The next day...

"Dana?" she felt someone stroke her cheek, for a second she forgot "Hmm...Ellis" then she heard him chuckle. Her eyes flicked open, she saw him smile down at her, "oh god! We didn't...did we?" she asks, trying to remember, he chuckles, "unfortunate not...I did knock, but there was no answer, so I used my emergency key. We did say eleven didn't we?"

She rubs her eyes "what time is it?" she stretches as she looks up at him, his eyes glide over her body, she pulls the covers up, his eyes flick back to hers. He looks down at his watch, "eleven twenty one!" she sighs, "my head hurts," he laughs, "you do look a little rough!"

She narrows her eyes, "thanks a lot!" she hissed at him, "look, why don't you stay in bed, and I'll take care of the boys?" she looks up at him, "I can't ask you to do that, it's my own fault I have a hangover!"

He gets up from the bed, "it's fine! I'll go to the shop and grab you some painkiller, a Lucazade and dinner"

"Y-you don't have to do that," she sits up and the room starts to spin, she clutches her head "Ouch!" she laid back down. "Ok, fine! Can you help the boys do their homework and reading?" he nods "boys, get your shoes on, we're going to the shops" he calls out as he leaves the bedroom.

A little later...

She stirred, she looked at her bedside table Ellis had left her a couple of paracetamol and a bottle of Lucazade. She sat up, reaching for the painkillers, her clock read fourteen minutes passed three, she could hear Ellis and the boys downstairs, she jumped into the shower and changed into fresh clothes before she made her way downstairs.

The three of them are sitting around the table doing their homework, she wandered in quietly. She listened to Ellis helping them with their maths homework, "hey" the three of them look up, "how are you feeling?" Ellis asks.

"I bit more human now, thanks," she smiled, "good, we are going to finish up here, and I'll start on dinner"

"Oh...you don't have to do that. I don't want to put you out"

"Dad is making chicken korma, Mum" Arlo tells her, "oh well if that's the case you're welcome to stay. Do you want me to do anything?"

"You could show me where everything is in the kitchen?" she nods, "ok, I'm just going to get a glass of water" she walked into the kitchen, filling a glass, "so where's the pans?" she heard him behind her.

"Oh in this cupboard" she moves passed him, his aftershave fills the air around her, reminding her of all the times he would wear that scent. She opens the cupboard, "anything else?" he reaches into the cupboard pulling out the biggest pan, "chopping board?"

She moves over to another cupboard pulling out the chopping board and placing it against the counter, "there you go," he smiles at her, "thanks, now go relax and let me cook" she rolls her eyes at him, but makes her way into the living room where the boys are.

Twenty minutes later she wanders into the kitchen where he is cooking, she pulls a bottle of wine out of the fridge "wanna glass?" she nudges him as he is stirring his curry, "just one, I need to drive home"

"Lightweight!" she teases him, handing him the glass, "said the woman that got drunk on Bucks fizz Christmas morning," he nudges her, "hey! That was because I couldn't drink for months being pregnant," he chuckles "do you remember when you were craving black olives at eleven o'clock at night?"

She laughs, "yep and you drove around for three hours in search for them!" she laughs at the memory, "in the end, I went to a Domino's ordered a pizza and got them to put loads of black olive on it. You got your olives and I had a pizza!"

She pours herself a glass, "hair of the dog?" he teases her, "just one, you can take the bottle home if you want?"

"How was girls' night anyway?" he looks at her and he starts dishing up, "well, I came home drunk, so it must be a good night," he chuckles, "right dinner is ready" he hands her a plate.

After dinner...

"See I told you that your Mum could dance!" he nudges the boys as they watch her play Just Dance, "Rah, rah-ah-ah-ah. Roma, roma-ma. Gaga, ooh-la-la. Want your bad romance" the song plays as she hits every move, her hips sway to the music.

At the corner of her eye, she saw his were fixed on her, she hits the last few moves, "eighty nine percent! YES" she jumps up and down, "right, duo!" Ellis jumps up from the sofa, picking the song Girls just want to have fun by Cyndi Lauper. She laughs at him wiggling his hips to the beat, that was one thing about him, he knew how to dance every time they got on the dance floor, he'd give her a look that made her feel like the only girl in the world.

The pair are laughing as they hit the steps, "you still know how to move!" she teases him, "I thought you knew the answer to that already!" he winks at her.

She rolls her eyes at him, "smug git!" she thought, missing her moves, when the song finally came to an end, Ellis won making him cheer, the boys gave him a high five.

"Right, bedtime you two!" Dana told their boys, "b-b-but Mum!" Arlo protested, "you have school in the morning!" she reminded him, "fine, but did you ask Dad about Tuesday?" he looked at her, "no, but I will. Now go to bed!"

Arlo sighed, looking to his Dad, "I thought after what you said last night, you'd have more time now? So you can come right?"

"Come? Come to what buddy?" Ellis crouched down to his smaller son, "sports day, I asked Mum to ask you. I'm sure Grandad won't mind?!" Ellis nods, "I'll be there, but only if you do as your Mum told you and go to bed!"

Arlo is beaming, "ok! Night Mum! Night Dad!" Arlo rushes off, Myles gets up from the sofa, "I'll make sure he brushes his teeth! Night" Myles follows his brother upstairs. "Night! I love you!" Dana calls after them, "Night boys!" Ellis shouts up at them.

Dana turns to him, "I'm sorry about Arlo, but what did he mean when he said you have more time?" she quirks a brow at him, he lets out a long sigh, "I was going to tell you this morning, but you were hung over, so I thought it was best to wait till you were feeling better...."

She looks at him waiting, "...I-I..er...I quit!" she narrows here eyes at him not quite believing his words, "you quit?" she repeated his words, "yeah, two months ago actually. I wanted to find my feet before I told you and the boys, but now I have I thought you all deserved to know!"

She let out a light chuckle, "what's funny?" he looks at her, "heard it all before!" she walks away towards the kitchen, he follows her, "it's true!" he pulls out his phone looking through his emails.

"It was true the last time..." she pours herself another glass of wine, "look!" he slides his phone over the kitchen island to her "read that and look at the date!" her stubbornness kicks in, glancing at the phone she saw the Sussex Police header, she skimmed through the resignation email that was dated three months earlier.

"You said you quit two months ago, this is dated back three months?" he looks at her, "I had to give a months notice" her eyes meet his, "so what are you doing now?"

His hands run down his face, "I...er...I'm working with my Dad!" she knew that was the last thing he'd want to do, "you always said you didn't want to work in the family business. Why would you do a job that makes you so unhappy?" she looks at him over the top of her glass.

His eyes bore into hers never breaking contact, "because doing what I love means I can't be with the woman I love!"

She clamped her eyes shut and let out a breath before she caught his gaze, "not this again! I can't do this!" she set her glass down on the counter. "You've always said action speak louder than words, these are my action to keep you happy!" he looks at her the way he used to when he wanted to make up.

"But it's not just about where you work, I want you to love your job! But it's not just about that and you know that!" he huffs.

This wasn't the reaction he wanted or was hoping for, "are you going to Arlo's sports day?" he asked, wanting to change the subject, she nods, "he wants us both there"

"Specking of..are you going to Priya and Jason's wedding?" he cautiously asks "I don't think that's a good idea. I think you should just take the boys"

He bows his head, "I was kinda hoping you would come?" he looks up at her, "I don't think that's a good idea, plus I got Cherry to do the photos, so I didn't have to go!"

"It's just a wedding, you've known Jason for years, and you get on well with Priya...I don't see the problem?" he quirks a brow at her, "I don't want to confuse the boys!"

"Confuse them? How would going to a wedding together confuse them?" he looks at her, "because us, doing things together is confusing! Even for me!"

"But you are their Mum and a part of the family. To be honest with you, I was hoping you'd come to keep my Mum off my back," she chuckles knowing she could handle his Mum just like he could handle hers.

"Fine...if we are going together, it's just as friends that's it!" he nods, hoping this was a step forward...

She pressed the brakes in vain, "MUM!" Arlo cried out before the world faded to black!
