Partly due to #LocalAreaElectionSeason starting up (ie. there’s a Kimberley, BC By-Election happening this month, with advanced voting starting today — AND — there’s also a BC Provincial Election happening in October), combined with the fact that I happened to have some #KimberleyBC-based online “outlets” mostly collecting dust (online outlets like @HI54LOFI + @95EHdotCA who sometimes reach tens of people with every blahg & social share), I figured these next couple months might be a decent time for me to un-push the indefinite pause buttons that I pushed on all my self-inflicted blogging back in whatever month/year it was — AND THEN — I could try testing the waters to see if there’s any versions of my old ‘HI54.BLOG / MOUN.TOWN + 95EH.CA’ equation that makes sustainable sense to keep trying to do (given all the known realities).
AND… one of the things I’ll be playing around with is updating the MOUN.TOWN/RADIO #MixTapeRadio players (BOTH SIDES) with a different starting digital mixtape/cd EVERY Wednesday-ish (ie. sometime around the middle of the week).
And, as with the very blog post that accompanies this week’s featured MTR episode, in an effort to repurpose prior blog content for proper re-use protocol (#blahgcomposting), I’ll often do some alterations & edits to the original blog posts to make them even more ‘worth a visit/click’ this time around 👍
So… come on over to MOUN.TOWN / HI54.BLOG (which you can also find your way over to via highway 95EH.CA) and then go dig a little bit deeper than whatever the social media gardens allow for these days 👍

Chapter Twenty-Four: Are You Scared?
You squeaked, despite yourself, watching the first team head in. You hadn’t answered Shinso’s question yet, refraining from admitting that you were terrified to essentially be walking into a spooky forest. Your knees were quaking, as you edged further and further away from the line of people.
“Are you scared?” Shinso whispered, trying to bring up the question again.
You covered your face in your hands, shivering. “I-I don’t do this kind of thing normally. I don’t like anything that could be considered horror. I also don’t like the dark.”
Shinso chuckled. “It’s just other students trying to scare us. It won’t be that bad.”
“You say that now…” you trailed off. Abruptly, you heard a scream coming from the woods. “I-I can’t do this.”
“You’re telling me that my Kitten is a scaredy-cat?” he asked, leaning over you.
“Y-yes,” you murmured.
Shinso’s hand went to the small of your back, and he bent down so his lips were only inches away from your ear. “Then it’s a good thing you’re partners with me. I’m not scared of anything.”
You blushed hard. He led you back in line with your eyes still covered. As each group went, resounding screams echoed out of the darkness. Soon it was your turn to go, and your legs felt as if they were frozen to the spot.
“It’s your turn,” Pixie-Bob said again.
You didn’t move. You were shaking from your head to your toes.
“It’s okay,” Shinso whispered. “You can do this. I’m right here.”
Once his hand was on you again, you walked forward with a small nudge to your back. Maybe if you passed out, you could avoid going altogether. You continued to walk forward, unfortunately not brave enough to fake unconsciousness.
“You’re going to bump into something if you don’t uncover your eyes,” Shinso said, shortly after you’d gone deeper into the forest.
“As long as I don’t s-see anything scary, I don’t care,” you said.
Shinso chuckled again. He stopped, forcing you to do the same. You peered out between your fingers up at him. He was holding his hand out to you. “Will holding my hand make you feel any better?” he asked. He was clearly blushing, but he didn’t take back his offer.
You reached out your trembling fingers and grabbed his hand, squeezing it tightly. He took a few steps forward again with you following closely while holding his hand. That was until another unearthly scream made you freeze. Shinso tugged on your hand to encourage you to move, but this time you weren’t so easily swayed. Small tears brushed your vision as you peered forward into the darkness. Shinso sighed. He suddenly reached down, lifting you up into a princess carry and plunging into the trees beside the horseshoe path, away from where you were supposed to be heading.
“S-Shinso, what are you doing?” you asked.
“Getting you out of this situation,” he said. “I don’t care about winning. I just care that you’re okay, and this is obviously making you uncomfortable.”
“But…” you trailed off, feeling the fear loosen from your muscles now that you didn’t have to participate.
Shinso set you down, holding his hand out for you to grab again. “We should be able to cut through here to get to the exit, we’ll just wait until we see the group ahead of us pass, then we’ll come out and shrug it off like we never found our nametags.
“But, isn’t that cheating?” you asked.
“Not if we don’t intend to win,” he said.
Shinso was sure-footed as he broke through the dimly lit underbrush. His long fingers encapsulated your hand, careful not to let you fall, even if you stumbled from time to time. Although it was a lot darker in this area, your eyes slowly adjusted. Shinso suddenly stopped with his hand tightening around your hand.
“Do you smell that?” he asked.
The smell of smoke drifted into your senses just as he’d said something.
“Could it be a forest fire?” you asked, catching his gaze turn back on you.
“I don’t see Todoroki or Bakugo setting the forest on fire so easily. Neither of them are that reckless,” Shinso said. His eyebrows furrowed.
You saw a glint of acid-like green, just barely discernable against the foliage surrounding you. It was like your body was reacting on its own. The glint of metal came into view. You sent your quirk out, pushing Shinso behind you as you tugged him back.
“Look out!” Something sharp hit you, right in your shoulder. You clenched your teeth, your fingers moving to the projectile and attempting to pull it off of you, only to feel more pricks stab your fingers. The metal object reminded you of a kind of bur, only artificial. The silver spikes appeared laced with a dripping green liquid. You pulled it free with your quirk, lodging it in the bark of a nearby tree.
A person leapt down from the tree, a hooded figure in black cloth and leather. With every faint movement, a vivid green peeked past the black in the garment’s accents. Upon the stranger’s hands were gloves that had silver on every other fingertip, which was most likely how they were able to throw such an all-around spiky object without puncturing themselves in the process.
“Hello, Anna,” the stranger said. His smile barely peeked out beneath his hood. “I’ve been waiting to meet you again.”
You stiffened, recognizing the voice. You staggered back, putting your hand out, so you could touch Shinso to know exactly where he was standing.
“Doku Kobura,” you breathed.
The boy tossed his head back, letting his hood slip off, cackling. “You remember me? Oh, Sweet Anna,” he said. His eyes came onto you, green orbs that reminded you of a venomous snake. His white hair was combed back as it was before, only now could you see a small braid lacing through the top.
Shinso grabbed your forearm, ready to move if he had to. “What do you want?” Shinso asked. His fingers tightened around your arm.
Kobura didn’t speak. Instead, his eyes came over to Shinso, like he hadn’t noticed that he was there. His grin widened, as he scanned him over. His fingers slipped somewhere between his garments. You knew that Kobura’s quirk didn’t affect you in the way it affected others. There was no way to tell if the poison would affect Shinso drastically or not, unless he was struck.
Even now, you felt the venom’s effects, searing at your brain. Your body grew hot with a dangerous fever. Your knees buckled slightly, but Shinso’s firm grasp on you didn’t let you fall.
Shinso, you thought, the pain in your temple made you cringe, but you kept your resolve. He has a viral venom quirk, you can’t let him poison you with it. It doesn’t affect me that badly, but—
Kobura moved faster than you’d seen anyone move, gliding over the forest floor as if he were a professional skater on ice. His face was so close. His hand grazed your neck. You shot out your quirk, blasting him back. Kobura skidded across the forest floor with one hand down to steady himself. He peered up at you with genuine curiosity, licking his lips.
“Oh, Anna. Naughty girl for using your quirk on a villain without a license. Although I can’t blame you for not being able to hold yourself back. Do you truly have that much control even with my venom in those pretty little veins of yours? You were made for me,” he said.
You’d barely reacted to his first attack. You’d gone through two days of intense training, and your quirk was a little spark compared to the roaring fire it normally was. On top of that, it was being subdued by Kobura’s quirk. You needed to get away from him. You needed to find Mr. Aizawa. If you called for help, you’d be afraid to put other students in danger.
“A puncture wound is more effective than a kiss to the skin, and yet you’re still standing, coherent. I wonder how much of me you can actually take.” He glanced at Shinso beside you. “Or, maybe I’ll see how much the boy can handle. His scent is all over you, and I despise the notion of competition, especially with how long I’ve had to wait, only able to send you petty threats and taking pictures of you from afar.”
“You’re the one who has been stalking her,” Shinso said through gritted teeth. “What kind of coward threatens someone in the shadows like that?”
Kobura chuckled again, eyeing Shinso in a predatory manner.
He had to know about Shinso’s quirk, that’s why he wasn’t answering him. He was waiting for the opportunity to strike. You could see Kobura calculating his next move, careful not to pounce when it wasn’t in his favor.
Two villains attacked us…return to camp immediately…do not…
Your fingers clamped around your rattling skull as you received Mandalay’s distorted message. Shinso wrapped an arm around you, swinging you out of the way. When you opened one of your eyes, you caught sight of Kobura sliding by where’d you just stood fingers ready to stab you with another barb.
There was no form of winning in this situation. You had to run away. Shinso was already two steps ahead of you. Just as he’d spun you to safety, Shinso pulled you with him, back to where you’d came from.
“Mandalay does not want us to engage,” Shinso said through rushed breaths, leaping over fallen foliage like an Olympic athlete.
You stumbled after him. The fever worsened in your body at the physical movement, making your vision grow hazy. It wasn’t until your foot snagged on a branch that your fingers slipped out of Shinso’s, forcing you to brace for impact as you slammed hard into the dirt.
Despite the pain in your scraped palms, you pushed yourself up, taking a step forward only to be tackled to the ground. The air had nearly been knocked clean out of you. The neck of your jacket was ripped down, and you heard the fabric split. The weight was suddenly pulled from you, and you rolled over to see Kobura and Shinso attempting to wrestle the other to the ground. Shinso was slightly taller than Kobura, but neither of them appeared physically inept compared to the other.
You stood shakily, bracing yourself on a tree and feeling the fever ebbing. The cold sweat formed in droplets on your forehead, right before the fever finally broke. Just as you’d gained your senses, Kobura had shifted his weight, gaining the advantage over Shinso and spinning him around to get him in what you assumed was a choke hold. Kobura suddenly raked his fingers down Shinso’s face, ripping the neck of his shirt down and latching onto him with his extended fangs.
Shinso’s eyes widened, and he hissed in pain, throwing Kobura off of him. His hand naturally came over the bite on his neck as he stumbled away. Kobura wiped the fresh blood from his lips, chuckling.
“No need to hold that. It should have already clotted,” Kobura muttered.
Shinso shook his head. His palm resting at his temple. You reached out to him, as he staggered, grabbing his crumpling body. Heat radiated from his skin. His breath came out labored. He pulled you to him. A burst of strength kept him upright, and he forced himself to continue back to the main course. His clammy hand shivered in yours.
“S-Shinso?” you stammered, noticing his footfalls wobbling.
He collapsed. His body shivered as if he was freezing. His hands clenched at his head as if it were splitting in half. You put a hand on his back, wanting to fall to his side to help him.
“Fascinating,” Kobura said. His slow and deliberate footsteps came closer to the two of you.
You spun back to face him, and your stance shifted so that you could keep Shinso protected.
“Two mind-type quirks in one class seems a bit unfair to me. Normally, he’d have succumbed to his quirk’s feral instincts. It looks as if the virus has decided slowly break down his mind instead.”
“What do you want from us? Why are you attacking our class?” you asked, trying to buy more time. If Shinso’s quirk wasn’t as wholly affected by the poison as yours was, then he’d need time for the venom to run its course.
“Us?” he asked. “I don’t want anything to do with the others. You, Anna, you’re the reason that I came on this little expedition with my friends. Normally, I hate getting my hands dirty, but for you…” he trailed off, smirking and looking off distantly. “At first, I thought you were nothing more than a pretty face, but my quirk doesn’t hurt you like it does others. I can get closer to you without worrying.”
“You’re a villain,” you snapped back. “What makes you think I want to get close to you?”
“Details, Anna, little details that we can work on together. Now that I’m allowed to get near you, nothing has to hold me back.”
You glanced back at Shinso. He was on his hands and knees, letting out horrid coughs. You clenched your teeth, unable to leave him and still unable to fight back.
Eraserhead…permission to fight…villains…use training… Mandalay’s piercing message filled your head like an echoing cave. Had you not been so exhausted already, you may have been able to completely pull from the entire message, but it was clear, your teacher was giving you permission to fight back.
You raised your hand, glaring at Kobura. You couldn’t let him hurt anyone else. You were the only one there to stop him now. Kobura grinned back at you, his eyes widening in excitement.
“Are you going to play with me?” he asked.
When you were going to force him back for getting too close, another transmission thundered against your fragile mind, cracking it like an egg shell.
Listen…the villains…after Kacchan… The third message relayed to you, forcing you to wince again at the telepathic interference. Your body weakened again.
They were after Bakugo? But, why were they after Bakugo?
“W-what’s happening?” Shinso’s gruff question came out behind you.
“Shinso—” That’s when the world numbed around you. Your jaw grew slack. Your fingers loosened, and your hand dropped. Your vision stared straight ahead.
“Oh, it looks like your friend wasn’t immune after all,” Kobura cooed, closing the distance between you. He slid a finger under your chin, tilting it up. “I wonder if it’s just his quirk that’s going to attack you.” Kobura’s eyes glistened with curiosity. He licked his lips.
If you forced Shinso out, you could hurt him severely, but if you did nothing, then Kobura had the ability to do what he wanted. The memory of losing control with Shinso controlling you once before sent a shiver down your spine. Would you risk hurting him to get free?
“Maybe the brainwashing boy is worth keeping like The League wants, but that would leave him alive to take you from me, and we can’t have that. I was told to try to convert him to our side, but should he resist he’d just be a waste of space. He didn’t impress as much as the other one at the Sports Festival. Shigaraki said he was too weak.” Kobura traced a finger down your frozen neck. “You, on the other hand, Anna, are my wild card. There’s so much power in this delicate body of yours. Should I bring you back willingly, I would surely get praised for it.” Kobura leaned in, gently holding your hair up to caress between his fingers, smelling the length of it up to your scalp. His spindly fingers grabbed the back of your braid, tugging it sharply.
You would have cringed in pain, had you had full control of your body.
Shinso…fight it… you reached out with your mind, no matter how painful it was. Unable to move, all you could do was listen and wait.
“He’s not the only one after your heart though…is he?” Kobura’s expression darkened. “Their scents are all over you too. It’s revolting.”
Shinso, please. Fight it. You can fight it. As your thoughts pushed into his mind, you felt yourself being tugged to him. Your quirks were combining again, reacting to each other like they had before.
You lost consciousness in your physical body, projecting into the dark void that was your minds’ combined landscape. Should you have pushed back, you knew it would have been disastrous. Instead, you let yourself be pulled under. You stared into the black to see Shinso vigorously slamming his fists onto the ground in a torn UA uniform. His hair was disheveled. His fists were bloody.
Let me out! Dammit! Let me out! he screamed into the abyss. The pain soaked into your skin like a sponge. I’m not useless. Don’t make me useless. She needs me now! Dammit!
Fight it, Shinso, your thoughts came out in a muffled whisper. You touched your throat, unable to project it. He couldn’t see you, not like he had been able to before. Shinso!
This time it was as if he could hear you, but when he turned to face you, his attentive lavender eyes had grown milky. He heard your voice, but it was as if he were blind. You felt stuck in place. You couldn’t run to him, to show him that you were standing right in front of him. You could see the tears in his eyes.
Kitten? he thought. Worry strained his expression. If you’re here, then I’m…hurting you…I’m controlling you right now. I can’t see. I can’t escape.
You need to fight his quirk, Shinso. It’s holding you here. Fight it! Your last echoing thought shattered the dark illusion. You fell back into your physical body with your neck stinging as a poisoned blade slowly began to draw blood.
Shinso’s hold on you flickered with the introduction of searing pain, but it wasn’t enough to give you your control back.
“You’re back,” Kobura said. He pulled the blade away from your neck, smiling nervously at you. “I thought I had lost you. I thought that my precious Anna had left.” He pouted, dragging his thumb across your bottom lip. “How could you leave me alone like that?” His eyes suddenly unfocused on you and then down to Shinso, who had collapsed behind you. “You were with him, weren’t you?” Kobura tutted softly. His fingers tightened around the handle of his blade. “I will have to kill him after all.”
With his words, you pulled the strings connecting you and Shinso taught. He still had full control over you. It felt like you were pushing your head into an oven. The farther you went the more unbearable heat singed at your every sense. Kobura lifted the blade above Shinso’s unmoving form, and you wanted to scream.
The control released. Like a surge of exploding fire, your mind shot out hitting Kobura directly. His body went flying, slamming him against a tree with a horrifying crack, making it split. Shinso gasped in air. His entire body shook. His hands came up to his face. He looked directly at you. You gave him a weak smile.
“I’m glad you’re…” Your body folded in on itself. The fever burned at your forehead. You’d pushed your mind to its limit again, trying to get him back. You fell to your knees. Your vision clouded with spots.
Shinso grabbed for you. His body was a normal temperature as his fingers were careful to brush back hair from your face. He gently patted you on the cheek.
“S-Stay with me,” he said in worry.
You blinked slowly, trying to keep your eyes open. He looked over his shoulder, most likely trying to see what had happened to Kobura. With a sharp intake of breath and a wince, he took you up into his arms. Once again, he tried to make a break for the main road. The two of you fell out onto the dirt path. Your mind slightly focused again as you both lied out, breathing heavily. Shinso reached for your hand to get you up again, but he noticed the concentration beginning to stir in your tired eyes.
“Think?” Ochaco asked.
You peered up at her, breathlessly. You were so thankful to see her. She had restrained someone beneath her. Your gaze fell onto her captive, and your chest tightened in fear.
“Kokoro too?” Toga cooed. “Don’t think I forgot you. I never forget a friend.” Toga took the momentary distraction to stab Ochaco in the leg, beginning to suck the blood from her thigh, using a monstrous contraption attached to her and mimicking the sound.
You picked your hand up from the ground, but your quirk did not respond to you. You winced, feeling your mind reject you. Shinso didn’t appear to be able to move either, struggling to get on his feet. How could none of you stop this? How could you not react?
To your horror, Kobura sprung from the brush, landing directly on Shinso’s back and knocking the air out of his lungs. A knife held up in Kobura’s extended arm readied to stab Shinso. Your quirk flickered against the poison flowing in you, and you barely managed to push Kobura off of Shinso. He did an acrobatic flip before skidding back, standing.
From down the path, Shoto, Shoji, and a very beaten Midoriya came in to view.
“Uraraka!” Shoto shouted.
“Quickly, help Ochaco!” Asui cried.
Toga sprung out from under Uraraka, frowning. She landed lightly beside Kobura, taking hold of his arm. “There are too many people here. We don’t want to die tonight.”
“But…” Kobura tried to argue with her, glancing at you longingly.
Toga gave him another firm tug. “Let’s go, Doku. There will be another time.” Toga paused, her eyes going wide, staring back at the three boys and making a gleeful noise.
“We have to stop them!” Ochaco shouted.
“No!” Asui responded, finally freeing herself from the tree she’d been trapped on and holding her back. “We don’t know how dangerous their quirks are.”
By the time anyone had time to make a decision, they’d already disappeared into the trees. Your body was still trembling in shock. You had a couple of scrapes and cuts, and a significant toll had been taken on your quirk, but for the most part you were not severely injured. Kobura’s quirk had already diluted in your system, and you felt your strength returning to you.
“Who were those two?” Shoto asked, rushing up to Uraraka with Midoriya and Shoji.
“Villains,” Asui answered.
“Uraraka, are you hurt?” Midoriya asked.
“I’m fine, but what about you? And…” Ochaco’s eyes glanced back toward you, almost seemingly unnoticed behind Shinso and the villains’ disappearance.
A moment later, Shoto had caught sight of you. “Anna?” he asked. He was holding another unconscious student, but given that you were struggling to stand, he hastily handed him over to Ochaco. Shoto pulled you upright, checking you over. You winced as he grazed the wound on your shoulder.
“What happened?” he asked.
“We were attacked,” Shinso said through gritted teeth. “By that white-haired creep with the fangs.” He stood up and staggered.
Asui tried to help him keep steady, but appeared to keep her attention on Shoto, Midoriya, and Shoji.
“At least none of you seem too badly injured and the villains have fled for the most part. You have to join our group. We’re trying to protect Kacchan and get him back to camp,” Midoriya announced.
You were genuinely surprised Midoriya was still conscious. Shoji was holding him on his back with his dupli-arms, but from the injuries that Midoriya had sustained, you didn’t think he’d still be able to speak.
Asui cocked her head to the side. “How can you protect Bakugo if he’s not with you?”
“But, he is with us,” Midoriya said. Shoji and he turned around to no one.
“Nice trick isn’t it?” A man said, flipping some aqua colored balls between his fingers. “I took him easily using my magic, a bit of sleight of hand. Bakugo will be better suited as a villain with his talents. He’d be wasted as a pathetic hero. We just want to provide him with what’s best, the perfect stage for him to perform on.” The man’s tan trench coat fluttered against the breeze as he gently tossed the marble up and down in his gloved hands. His mask kept his face a mystery.
“Give him back to us!” Midoriya shouted.
Your eyes widened. Did he have Bakugo? How did he take him so easily? You knew that they were after him, but you didn’t think anyone could have captured him. You had been scared all of this time that they may want to take you, but if they had Bakugo then…
“Bakugo doesn’t belong to you, so why should I give him back?” the man asked.
With tears brushing your vision, you glared up at the masked man. “You can’t take him! He’s our friend!”
The man’s attention shifted to you. His curiosity piqued. He bowed his head, tipping his hat where another marble lay, swirling inside.
“Ah, Kokoro. I thought that Kobura would have taken care of you, but I see the boy failed. Such a shame really. I’m sure all is not lost though, as I have two of your strongest students in the palm of my hand.”
Shoji suddenly turned back. “Tokoyami’s gone too!” he shouted.
The mystery man chuckled softly. “I couldn’t pass up giving him a chance to join as well. Moonfish is a dangerous man, a man on death row, and for him to be taken down so viciously by the avian, I had to give him a chance to join our merry little troupe.”
Shoto sped in front of your group sending his biggest ice attack in the direction of the mystery man. As the smoke cleared, the man was seemingly gliding away on wind currents.
“Escapology and sleight of hand are my specialties! I don’t intend to fight you children, especially hero candidates from UA. I find violence to be quite boorish.” His hand went up to his ear. “Our target has been captured. Vanguard Action Squad, it’s time for us to show up for the final curtain at the retrieval point!”
“We can’t let him take them!” you shouted.
“Then, we’ll stop them!” Shoto announced in return.
You all took off in an intense sprint after the flying man. Whatever energy you had left was going into moving. You wouldn’t let them take Bakugo. After all he’d done for you, you couldn’t let him be taken. He wouldn’t have left you. He would have done everything possible to get you back. Although Shinso was normally the best runner out of all of you, his pace was wavering, and his breathing was ragged.
The man was getting farther away. He was going too fast. All of you were suffering. If he got back to their rendezvous point, if he managed to meet up with The League, they could easily escape with those warp gates you’d seen Dabi use before.
Your quirk shifted inside you. The fear and the pain numbed. That feral ferocity you’d felt while meditating, while out of control, was spiking up again. You heard Bakugo’s agonizing scream as he was hit by Dabi’s flames not that long ago. You saw his face just before he hit you with his howitzer blast. You felt his fingers ghost your jaw as he made sure you were okay. Every memory of Bakugo hit you like a sledge hammer.
The mind blast came without your control. It hit the ground, springing you forward, nearly forcing you into a tree from the speed at which it propelled you. You adjusted, your mind reacting faster than your body, bouncing from forest floor, to tree, to rock. Soon, you were right below the masked man, your quirk keeping a steady pace with him through the trees. Nothing mattered but getting your classmates back, getting Bakugo back.
The masked man peered down at you relatively surprised but seemingly unnerved. Your eyes caught sight of a flying projectile coming from behind, going straight for him. Your focus stuttered. You slowed yourself down, skidding over loose dirt as you’d passed the man, who was making his descent. That’s when you realized it was Shoto, Shoji, and Midoriya headed straight for him.
“You!”
Your blood ran cold. You shifted your attention, making eye-contact with Dabi. His flames had already begun burning.
“Her! Her, who? A demon! An angel,” a man rambled beside him in a full dark bodysuit.
“Ooh, look Kobura! It’s your girlfriend again!” Toga squealed. “She can come with us after all!”
You staggered back. You hadn’t considered facing the villains alone. Your fingers trembled as you cautiously raised your hands.
Dabi’s initial surprise morphed into a smirk. “You lost, Little One?” he asked. “Didn’t think I’d see you again so soon. You look scared. Why don’t you come with us?”
Dabi’s flames ignited brighter as he took a threatening step in your direction. That’s when the masked man was sent careening to the ground in front of you with three of your classmates on his back. You took the chance to distance yourself from the villains, assessing the situation again. This was bad. There were too many of them. How much time did you have? Was there time?
Your disheveled bangs lifted with your growing uncertainty. Did you have enough energy left to fight? Could you fight? How would you all make it out?
It hurts, but I have to keep going for Kacchan!
I will stop them!
After everything Tokoyami’s been through, they can’t take him!
Brutish children! I nearly choked on our objective!
You have got to be kidding me? Out of the sky?
Thoughts swirled in and out of your mind. Your quirk sparked and sputtered. You hissed in pain, covering your ears.
Sweet Anna, is she feeling pain? I’ll make it stop.
You opened your eyes, catching movement from your peripheral. You moved on instinct, jumping back. A hand sailed out in front of you as if trying to catch you. Kobura smiled at you with widened eyes, planting his foot so he could redirect his route to attempt another capture. You took hold of your quirk, snapping it out and sending him sailing into the trees.
“Hey, you can’t just go around throwing Doku! Good riddance!” the man in the bodysuit contradicted himself.
You clenched your teeth, feeling your quirk growing restless again. Your focus should be on the mystery man, it should be on getting back your friends.
“Compress, out of the way!” Dabi’s cold voice boomed.
The mystery man, Compress, began glowing a faint blue before disappearing beneath your classmates. Dabi’s flames shot forward, nearly catching the boys straight on in hot flame. They barely evaded, getting singed in the process. You attempted to reach out your quirk to help, only to see Kobura coming at you again. Your attention adjusted. Your quirk pushed against your attempt to use it again.
“Getting tired? Sweet Anna, just let me take care of you,” Kobura said. He leapt into the air, poison knife raised above his head.
Your quirk erupted within you again. You sent another taxing blast in his direction, sending him flying. This time he tumbled back near Dabi.
“Your attention should be on making sure we have Bakugo. Forget the girl,” Dabi hissed at Kobura.
“No worries, Dabi. He’s right…” Compress riffled through his pocket, trailing off.
“Midoriya, Todoroki, Think! I have them, we’re done!” Shoji shouted, holding up the faint blue marbles between his fingers. “I don’t know exactly what your quirk is, but I know that they have something to do with these marbles, right? I found them in your pocket.”
“Impressive little pickpocket you are. I expect nothing less from a student of UA.”
“They’re saved!” Midoriya shouted.
“Let’s go! Now!” Shoto announced. He shot an ice wall between you and the villains.
No. Something was wrong here. Compress was too composed. He didn’t even seem that angry when Shoji found out his trick.
Brutish children! I nearly choked on our objective! The thought came back to you like a boomerang. Bakugo and Tokoyami weren’t in his pockets, they were in his mouth.
Shoto grabbed your arm in your daze, pulling you with them. You dug your heels into the dirt, but Shoto was much stronger than you.
“No! We don’t have them!” you warned.
“Nomu!” Midoriya’s words had you all shifting direction.
“Shoji has them!” Shoto argued with you.
“No, he doesn’t,” you snapped back.
This caused Shoto to hesitate. His grip on you loosened, and he slowed his pace. All of you came to a screeching halt when the warp villain appeared before you. A black and purple mist with yellow eyes glared at you.
“A warp gate! Like the same one at the USJ,” Shoto said, pushing you behind him.
You bit your lip, looking back toward Dabi and Compress. They still had them. The warp gates were there. They had appeared in front of each villain individually. Was it too late?
Your quirk stabbed at your temple, as you attempted to force yourself forward using a mind blast. If only you had more time, if only you had more strength, you’d be able to get them back so easily.
“It’s time to go. It’s been five minutes since the signal,” the warp gate spoke.
Toga waved gently at the four of you. “Bye, Izuku! I’ll see you again.” She disappeared into the void.
Kobura blew you a fleeting kiss, faintly putting a hand to his chest as if it pained him to go. “Until we meet again, Sweet Anna.” He backed away into the mist.
The man in a full-body suit flung himself into the gate.
“We can’t leave without the kid,” Dabi snapped harshly at Compress, glowering at the four of you.
“Now, now, Dabi. What these children don’t know about magic is the simplistic nature of misdirection.” Compress snapped his fingers and the marbles in Shoji’s hands transformed into ice.
Shoto’s gaze came to you, and you balled your fists, knowing that this wasn’t over yet.
Compress bowed and removed his mask, as he stepped back into the portal with his head still extended out. “What’s right in front of them is exactly what the magician wants them to see. And the real trick, was hidden all along.” He stuck out his tongue, showing what you had suspected had been true. Two marbles balanced precariously on the tip of his tongue. “Let’s bid them adieu. It is our final curtain call after all.”
They were within your reach, if your quirk would just respond. No matter how much you concentrated, it rejected you, leaving a bitter sting in its wake.
“No!” you shouted, tears coming to your eyes.
“You can’t!” Midoriya screamed.
You ran toward them, knowing it was going to be too late. Dabi’s smirk imprinted in your memories, as he narrowed his eyes at you. You nearly choked on a sob. But, like a beacon of hope, a beam of shimmering light burst from a nearby bush, blasting Compress’ mask into pieces. Within seconds, a chance had presented itself. Compress spat out the marbles, caught off guard by the laser blast.
“Aoyama?!” Midoriya cried.
The four of you charged. Midoriya collapsed first, his body unable to carry him forward. Your body betrayed you as well, causing you to stumble as the pain settled into your aching limbs. Shoto and Shoji reached their hands out to catch the marbles. Shoji caught his, quickly taking the opportunity to fall back. Shoto had nearly had the other marble within his grasp, until Dabi’s hand snapped out and caught the other.
“Poor little Shoto Todoroki. Such a disappointment, a tragedy really,” Dabi sneered, pulling back his hand and smirking.
Your breath caught as Shoto tumbled across the ground, having leapt to catch the sailing marble.
“Release them,” Dabi commanded. “We need to confirm we have Bakugo.”
Compress snapped his fingers, and Bakugo formed out of the marble with his neck positioned right in the hold of Dabi’s spindly fingers. The familiarity of his position had fear tightly wound around every one of your muscles. The warp gate was slowly sucking them in. Midoriya’s body moved on its own. He was screaming at them, begging them to let him go.
Bakugo’s red eyes came onto you. His jaw tightened.
“Stay back,” he muttered.
Your quirk snapped. Your hair rose, and a rush of heat burst from your mind. You had every single one of Dabi’s fingers within your grasp. You forced them back without remorse, hearing a series of sickening pops and the echo of a muffled grunt in pain. Your feet had left the ground at some point, as you raised your hand, grabbing Bakugo and yanking him toward you as you closed your fist. The air surged with him.
Dabi attempted to break from the warp gate, holding up his uninjured hand. The flames had already begun forming. Your quirk split. A shiver ran through you as the strand of your mind shot forward like a spear, extinguishing the flames on Dabi as it forcibly shoved him through the gate.
Voices, screaming voices and thoughts, careened into your mind. Your focus, everything you had left, was solely on keeping Bakugo from being taken. Bakugo’s body flew toward you, his arms naturally encircling you as he hit you with devastating speed, forcing the two of you flying. All you thought about was getting away. All you hoped for was keeping him safe. Even with Bakugo’s arms around you, the impact made against a tree to the back of your head was enough to knock you unconscious. You’d given all you had. You hoped it had been enough.

At the risk of being overly earnest...
All of this blog post will go after the jump because no one should read it, and I’ll probably delete it later.
Today is July 20, and without fail, it is the hottest day of the year. Dark Sky says it is 93 degrees but feels like 98 degrees. MyRadar says it is 92 degrees and feels like 96 degrees. The default iPhone weather app says it is 93 degrees and feels like 99 degrees. It is 7:25 p.m. It is awful.
Every summer, this stretch of days is the most oppressive of the year. The preheating of our sidewalks and streets is over, and it is time to bake. The humidity rolls in to make it a sauna. It is awful. It helps me remember everything.
There are too many events tied to this week. From July 17 through July 24, give or take a few days on either end, I can lay out formative events since 2008. Timehop and Facebook Memories have jarred my brain over the past few days and reminded me of what I miss, what I savor and what has shaped me to this point.
In 2008, Anna and I went to Whartscape in Baltimore on July 20. I took the above photo of Sam Herring of Future Islands there. I used to pinpoint this day as my shift into truly being “cool,” which is a concept that doesn’t quite age well. But we saw Future Islands, Dan Deacon, a Girl Talk side project, Adventure, Parts & Labor, Double Dagger, Ponytail and so many more. There were a bunch of weirdos in a parking lot in Baltimore. I was 16, and I hadn’t been around that before. It was something I wanted to be a part of in the future. It ruled. I am bummed I did not write about this day on the 10-year anniversary two years ago and that it came up quickly this year. Maybe for the 13th anniversary? It was a hot day. Black Dice’s set to close the night got canceled when a storm blew through, and Anna and I got lost in Baltimore in the storm.
Two days earlier, Anna and I went to Artscape to see The Oranges Band, one of the criminally underrated Baltimore bands of the 2000s. Anna was super into them in the early/mid-2000s, and I think they just weren’t weird enough to carve out the longevity and brain space of some of the Whartscape acts. It was fun. It was hot.
One day earlier, Scooter + Jinx played its last show (I don’t think we played again after that?) at the Shamrock Park bandshell. It was acoustic with me, Anna and Benn, and we covered Wilco (three times!), The White Stripes, Silversun Pickups, The Thermals, Cold War Kids, Pixies and I really can’t bear to watch any more of the videos to figure out what else we played. It was a lot. Earlier, I played guitar for Ashley, who sang, and we played some originals and covered Ted Leo. That was the night where Kate and I said we “liked” each other. It was a big deal at the time.
In 2009, there was another outdoor concert at the bandshell the same weekend. I performed alone as Wapinitia, and then Benn accompanied me on a drum for a “Death Valley ‘69″ cover and a Polar Bear Club cover. I played a ton of originals that I know longer remember how to play, though I find the set list for that night when I was cleaning out my room last week and packed it away in a box.
A couple people spent that summer trying to set me up with Elisabeth, and I had been listening to them, despite a couple disastrous encounters a month earlier. The Rita’s/Wendy’s setup will live in infamy. But I tried, and then I realized that I just didn’t care. So I hung out with Kyle and we talked to whole time. I was disillusioned that summer, but I was 17, so it makes sense.
In 2010, I do not really remember what I was doing. The IronBirds were on the road that weekend, so I was not working. I know I went back to Shamrock Park at night and just kind of walked around because I was sad and lonely (lol). My high school graduation party, which doubled as Anna’s college graduation party and my parents’ 25th wedding anniversary part, was in a couple days, so we were cleaning.
In 2011, I went to New York for the weekend. On July 22, Anna and I sat at the Williamsburg Waterfront and watched Death From Above 1979 perform from a distance. It was a hot night. The next day, Molly P. met up with us, and we went to the Prospect Park Zoo before seeing The Feelies, Real Estate and Times New Viking. We saw Real Estate in May and Anna was at the 285 Kent show in June where the band played its new album front to back, so we were seeing the evolution of the Days songs in the live environment. It was a great show, and I think I tried to drink some coconut water and immediately spit it out. Otherwise, Anna kept getting us wine.
From Prospect Park, we went to Shea Stadium and caught Andrew Cedermark’s set to close a bill that had also featured Dustin Wong. It was $7 per person to get in, or something like that, but Anna hustled Patrick Stickles at the door to let the three of us in for $7 because there was only one band left. We were drinking out on the Shea Stadium balcony, and Molly P. told me that she wished she hadn’t agreed to go see ODDSAC with me instead of going to senior prom the week before. I can’t argue with that. I texted Molly M. that I liked her.
Jeffery and Kia were at 285 Kent, so we went down to the water from Shea and wound up seeing Pictureplane at some insane hour of the night. It was so hot in 285. My phone said it was 88 degrees outside or something along those lines, and I got a chill when I walked out of 285. Someone was handing out watermelon, and it was hot. I don’t know how I survived that day. The mass shooting in Norway also happened that weekend.
The next day, Molly M. and I talked about the night before, and I said, “It’s real.” We wandered Williamsburg that day before going to Hoboken to see Real Estate and Dent May at Maxwell’s.
In 2012, Grandpa and Grandma died during the week, so I was a mess (though I did see Shut Up And Play The Hits in theaters, and it was good). I was going to New York anyway July 20, but I called out of my internship and got on an earlier bus. Anna picked me up from the MegaBus and we just kind of wandered Manhattan. The Aurora mass shooting happened the night before, too. I don’t remember where we got dinner, other than we got Mexican. We went out to Ridgewood Queens and then got ready. Molly M. was home in San Diego that weekend, so I didn’t have to walk on eggshells at Emily’s apartment on Havermeyer. Diana was in a fun mood, along with Becky, and Anastassia, Molly K. and Marc B. were also there (and more probably met up with us?). We pregamed pretty hard, and there are a bunch of hilarious photos that are now gone from Facebook because Becky deactivated last week. We went to the Woods and then some random house party in Williamsburg. There are a bunch of goofy pictures of me and Emily in the backyard, and Emily fell asleep on a bike(?).
The next day, Anna and I met up with Dent May at Grand Ferry Park and interviewed him for about 20 minutes. It was a perfect interview, and he tapped into a lot of what me and Anna were feeling psychically without knowing what we were going through. It was a beautiful night, and it was just really cool to talk to him. He was playing Glasslands, and since I was 20, I couldn’t go, so me and Anna met up with Anastassia and went to House of Vans to see Dum Dum Girls and Widowspeak. Anna and Anastassia stood inside the alcohol area, while I stood on the other side of the fence to talk to them. The sets were good, and then Anna and I went back to 285 to see Iceage. It was nuts. There were real punks there, and the indie kids weren’t ready for it.
On Sunday, July 22, Anna and I went down to DUMBO with Anastassia, and we walked the Brooklyn Bridge. It was cool. I still do not understand the logic of riding your bike across the bridge if you are a serious biker, but the views were great and it wasn’t too hot. We wandered Manhattan a little bit and then took the ferry back. It was one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen, and it was a satisfying end to the weekend during an awful time. Emily and Diana met up with us at American Apparel. Everyone agreed it was one of the most fun weekends of the summer, and it happened while Molly M. was away. Hm.
On Monday, we went to see Beach House in Central Park. Marc P. got the ticket that was supposed to be for Molly M. It rained. Lower Dens opened. It was beautiful. Anastassia watched from outside the fence, and we all went back to Brooklyn together. I was taking the bus home the next afternoon, so Anastassia and I met up in Williamsburg in the morning and went to Co-Op 87. I bought her a Widowspeak 7″, and we went over to Manhattan and I got pho for the first time in my life. It remains one of my favorite weekends under the worst circumstances.
In 2013, it was again one of the hottest days of the year. Me, Dan and Rob drove to Annapolis on July 19, and it was miserable. We tried to walk around. I did a phone interview with someone on the street. We got ice cream, and then we went back to College Park. On July 20, I went to Baltimore and met up with Seth and Ryan at an Irish bar on the Inner Harbor where we were going to meet Colleen for her birthday, but her flight got screwed up, so me, Seth and Ryan just watched the pirate boat in the harbor and the lightning.
In 2014, I was alone in California, so I drove out to Pomona to go to the Viva Pomona festival. I saw Thee Oh Sees, Fuzz and Terry Malts. I bought Worry by Big Troubles on vinyl from a record store out there. It was cool. I think that was the same weekend I watched an entire season of House of Cards, went to The Geffen Contemporary to see the Mike Kelley exhibit and then met up with Jack in Echo Park.
In 2015, I came home from covering a girls youth soccer tournament in Richmond and went to see No Age at the H&H Building on the hottest day of the year. They were good. No one was really there. A couple days later, I got my first real job at The Sun.
In 2016, I hadn’t taken my job at PennLive yet, but it was getting close. On July 23, we went to an Orioles game with a pretty deep crew, and it turned into a long day. It was so hot and so humid. It was raining, but there were no clouds over us. Jack said it was like the sky was crying.
In 2017, we spent a night in D.C. We were trying to use Brad & Mike’s pool because it was so hot, but then it thunderstormed.
In 2018, we were on our way to Western Maryland for a weekend at Deep Creek Lake. I got pulled over for speeding leaving Cumberland, but I got let off with a warning because I pulled over right when the guy waved me down. It was a good weekend. I think that was really the first time I started drinking a lot of White Claw. We got taquitos for the lake house, and it was the best food decision we made that weekend. Later, that weekend, I thought I lost my phone. I didn’t.
In 2019, we were in Denver. It was fine.
In 2020, I am sitting in my apartment waiting for a mattress to be delivered so I can throw out my old one and my futon frame in the trash tonight and then set up my room. I am so close to getting there.

"Remember, just ignore Melissa, she was always jealous Ellis choose you" Dom says as she pours Dana a drink, Dana sneers "I've handled her for sixteen years Dom, one more night isn't going to tip me over the edge. Plus, I married for love, she married for money.....five times before she met Jacob!" Dana smugly smirks.
"She reveals in others' misery, but ignore her!" the doorbell rings, Dom rushes to answer it, Kellie, Selina, Nancy, Annabelle and Melissa are there.
They flow through into the kitchen, Selina pulled Dana in for a hug, "hi sweetie, how are you and the boys?"
"Hey lovely, I'm alright and the boys are good thanks. What about you? How's Liam?"
She pulls Dana away from the girls, Dana quarks her brow at her, "you are my best friend, so I guessed maybe you could help me tonight?" Dana nods curiously, "this needs to stay between us, I can't drink tonight because I'm pregnant!" Dana was about to squeak, but she stopped herself. Her eyes glass over because she knew how long Liam and Selina trying and the struggles they had gone through to keep trying.
She pulled her in for a hug, "I'm so happy for you both! Congratulation!" the both of them get a bit teary, "thank you, I need your help with the girls. I don't want to tell them before twelve weeks. If I don't drink they will get suspicious..."
"I will get all your drinks tonight, don't worry!" Dana grins, "come on, let's get back to the others" Dana pulls her back towards the girls.
Keeping her promise and kept pouring Selina's drinks, "alright Dana?" Melissa takes a seat next to where Dana was "yup, you?" she vaguely answers her knowing she is only after information on Ellis "me? I'm great thanks...so how's the kids and the husband?"
"The boys are fine!" she doesn't tell her about Ellis, instead she wanders over to Selina with her drink, "what did she want?" Selina asks as she took the glass from her hand, "asking how the boys and Ellis are!" she hissed through gritted teeth.
"She's jealous of you, she always has been since Ellis asked you out and not her all those years ago"
"Ellis would never go near her, especially every stunt she's pulled over the years!" Dana smugly smirk.
A little later...
"Why don't we play a round of never have I ever?" Kellie says a little tipsy, "Yes! Let's go and take this into the living room!" Dom calls the girls through.
"I'll take care of the shots, Selina you can help me!" Dana holds Selina back, Dana fills two plates with plastic shot glasses, one plate she loads with vodka and gin shots and another with water, "take from the plate with the red flowers, Selina!"
"Won't the girl suss it out?" Selina asked, "I have a plan!" she winks at her as they take the plates of shots through, "right girls, I've loaded these two plates with three different shots, you'll get vodka, gin or just tap water. I've mixed them up, so there are different shots on each plate!" she places one on one side of the table and the water shots in front of Selina.
"I'll go first, then we will work out way round, never have I ever cheated!" Nancy looks around the group only Melissa drinks, the girls look at her, "it was in college years ago!" Melissa tells them like it isn't a big deal.
"I guess it's my turn, never have I ever slept with an ex after splitting up with them" Dom had said this so Melissa had to drink again, Dana raises her glass to her lips as well as Kellie, Annabelle, and Melissa. Dom looks at Dana in horrible, "what?! When?!"
"After the last girls night, it had been five months. I called Ellis and he was happy to oblige" Dom's jaw dropped, "how did we not know about this?" she asked her.
"I knew Shane told me, he saw Ellis the day after and Shane said he had a spring in his step and a huge smile on his face" Nancy winks at her, "sorry, I knew too, but we are best friends so!" Selina shrugs.
"Moving on, never have I ever had a Onlyfans page!" Melissa gives Kellie the side eye, knowing Kellie will have to drink, "so what?!" Dom roll her eyes at Melissa as Kellie drinks, "my body, my choice!" Kellie shrugs.
Selina looks pissed off with Melissa, "my turn! Never have I ever slept with someone over sixty" Selina looks at Melissa, who sips her drink, Dana hides her smirk behind her glass.
"Me next, never have I ever slept with more than one guy!" Dana grins, knowing the whole group will have to drink "that's not fair! Not all of us found our soulmate at fifteen!" Nancy playfully teases her.
"So much for soul mates! They aren't even together anymore!" Melissa reminds them, "they might not be, but I don't think Ellis will get with anyone else." Selina nudges Dana.
"Never have I ever been arrested!" Kellie watches the group, Dom, Annabelle and Melissa drink. Dana looks to Annabelle, "you work for the police!"
Annabelle smirks, "I do, it wasn't an official arrest it was more an intimate one. Jacques used his work handcuffs on me role playing! Still counts?"
"Well, if it does looks like I'm taking a shot too!" Dana picks one off the table and knocks it back "what a waste of police time!" Dana grins at Annabelle and the pair start to giggle.
The game continues on.
Later in the kitchen, "why wasn't I told about Ellis scratching an itch?" Dom teases her, "no one was suppose to know...Selina only knew because she caught him leaving the house the next morning"
"You still at least fancy him, then?" she quizzes her friend, Dana doesn't answer her, but it's written all over her face, "you still love him!" she mischievously grins at her, "you do!"
"I can't just turn those feelings off can I?!" Dom wraps her arms around her friend.
The next day...
"Dana?" she felt someone stroke her cheek, for a second she forgot "Hmm...Ellis" then she heard him chuckle. Her eyes flicked open, she saw him smile down at her, "oh god! We didn't...did we?" she asks, trying to remember, he chuckles, "unfortunate not...I did knock, but there was no answer, so I used my emergency key. We did say eleven didn't we?"
She rubs her eyes "what time is it?" she stretches as she looks up at him, his eyes glide over her body, she pulls the covers up, his eyes flick back to hers. He looks down at his watch, "eleven twenty one!" she sighs, "my head hurts," he laughs, "you do look a little rough!"
She narrows her eyes, "thanks a lot!" she hissed at him, "look, why don't you stay in bed, and I'll take care of the boys?" she looks up at him, "I can't ask you to do that, it's my own fault I have a hangover!"
He gets up from the bed, "it's fine! I'll go to the shop and grab you some painkiller, a Lucazade and dinner"
"Y-you don't have to do that," she sits up and the room starts to spin, she clutches her head "Ouch!" she laid back down. "Ok, fine! Can you help the boys do their homework and reading?" he nods "boys, get your shoes on, we're going to the shops" he calls out as he leaves the bedroom.
A little later...
She stirred, she looked at her bedside table Ellis had left her a couple of paracetamol and a bottle of Lucazade. She sat up, reaching for the painkillers, her clock read fourteen minutes passed three, she could hear Ellis and the boys downstairs, she jumped into the shower and changed into fresh clothes before she made her way downstairs.
The three of them are sitting around the table doing their homework, she wandered in quietly. She listened to Ellis helping them with their maths homework, "hey" the three of them look up, "how are you feeling?" Ellis asks.
"I bit more human now, thanks," she smiled, "good, we are going to finish up here, and I'll start on dinner"
"Oh...you don't have to do that. I don't want to put you out"
"Dad is making chicken korma, Mum" Arlo tells her, "oh well if that's the case you're welcome to stay. Do you want me to do anything?"
"You could show me where everything is in the kitchen?" she nods, "ok, I'm just going to get a glass of water" she walked into the kitchen, filling a glass, "so where's the pans?" she heard him behind her.
"Oh in this cupboard" she moves passed him, his aftershave fills the air around her, reminding her of all the times he would wear that scent. She opens the cupboard, "anything else?" he reaches into the cupboard pulling out the biggest pan, "chopping board?"
She moves over to another cupboard pulling out the chopping board and placing it against the counter, "there you go," he smiles at her, "thanks, now go relax and let me cook" she rolls her eyes at him, but makes her way into the living room where the boys are.
Twenty minutes later she wanders into the kitchen where he is cooking, she pulls a bottle of wine out of the fridge "wanna glass?" she nudges him as he is stirring his curry, "just one, I need to drive home"
"Lightweight!" she teases him, handing him the glass, "said the woman that got drunk on Bucks fizz Christmas morning," he nudges her, "hey! That was because I couldn't drink for months being pregnant," he chuckles "do you remember when you were craving black olives at eleven o'clock at night?"
She laughs, "yep and you drove around for three hours in search for them!" she laughs at the memory, "in the end, I went to a Domino's ordered a pizza and got them to put loads of black olive on it. You got your olives and I had a pizza!"
She pours herself a glass, "hair of the dog?" he teases her, "just one, you can take the bottle home if you want?"
"How was girls' night anyway?" he looks at her and he starts dishing up, "well, I came home drunk, so it must be a good night," he chuckles, "right dinner is ready" he hands her a plate.
After dinner...
"See I told you that your Mum could dance!" he nudges the boys as they watch her play Just Dance, "Rah, rah-ah-ah-ah. Roma, roma-ma. Gaga, ooh-la-la. Want your bad romance" the song plays as she hits every move, her hips sway to the music.
At the corner of her eye, she saw his were fixed on her, she hits the last few moves, "eighty nine percent! YES" she jumps up and down, "right, duo!" Ellis jumps up from the sofa, picking the song Girls just want to have fun by Cyndi Lauper. She laughs at him wiggling his hips to the beat, that was one thing about him, he knew how to dance every time they got on the dance floor, he'd give her a look that made her feel like the only girl in the world.
The pair are laughing as they hit the steps, "you still know how to move!" she teases him, "I thought you knew the answer to that already!" he winks at her.
She rolls her eyes at him, "smug git!" she thought, missing her moves, when the song finally came to an end, Ellis won making him cheer, the boys gave him a high five.
"Right, bedtime you two!" Dana told their boys, "b-b-but Mum!" Arlo protested, "you have school in the morning!" she reminded him, "fine, but did you ask Dad about Tuesday?" he looked at her, "no, but I will. Now go to bed!"
Arlo sighed, looking to his Dad, "I thought after what you said last night, you'd have more time now? So you can come right?"
"Come? Come to what buddy?" Ellis crouched down to his smaller son, "sports day, I asked Mum to ask you. I'm sure Grandad won't mind?!" Ellis nods, "I'll be there, but only if you do as your Mum told you and go to bed!"
Arlo is beaming, "ok! Night Mum! Night Dad!" Arlo rushes off, Myles gets up from the sofa, "I'll make sure he brushes his teeth! Night" Myles follows his brother upstairs. "Night! I love you!" Dana calls after them, "Night boys!" Ellis shouts up at them.
Dana turns to him, "I'm sorry about Arlo, but what did he mean when he said you have more time?" she quirks a brow at him, he lets out a long sigh, "I was going to tell you this morning, but you were hung over, so I thought it was best to wait till you were feeling better...."
She looks at him waiting, "...I-I..er...I quit!" she narrows here eyes at him not quite believing his words, "you quit?" she repeated his words, "yeah, two months ago actually. I wanted to find my feet before I told you and the boys, but now I have I thought you all deserved to know!"
She let out a light chuckle, "what's funny?" he looks at her, "heard it all before!" she walks away towards the kitchen, he follows her, "it's true!" he pulls out his phone looking through his emails.
"It was true the last time..." she pours herself another glass of wine, "look!" he slides his phone over the kitchen island to her "read that and look at the date!" her stubbornness kicks in, glancing at the phone she saw the Sussex Police header, she skimmed through the resignation email that was dated three months earlier.
"You said you quit two months ago, this is dated back three months?" he looks at her, "I had to give a months notice" her eyes meet his, "so what are you doing now?"
His hands run down his face, "I...er...I'm working with my Dad!" she knew that was the last thing he'd want to do, "you always said you didn't want to work in the family business. Why would you do a job that makes you so unhappy?" she looks at him over the top of her glass.
His eyes bore into hers never breaking contact, "because doing what I love means I can't be with the woman I love!"
She clamped her eyes shut and let out a breath before she caught his gaze, "not this again! I can't do this!" she set her glass down on the counter. "You've always said action speak louder than words, these are my action to keep you happy!" he looks at her the way he used to when he wanted to make up.
"But it's not just about where you work, I want you to love your job! But it's not just about that and you know that!" he huffs.
This wasn't the reaction he wanted or was hoping for, "are you going to Arlo's sports day?" he asked, wanting to change the subject, she nods, "he wants us both there"
"Specking of..are you going to Priya and Jason's wedding?" he cautiously asks "I don't think that's a good idea. I think you should just take the boys"
He bows his head, "I was kinda hoping you would come?" he looks up at her, "I don't think that's a good idea, plus I got Cherry to do the photos, so I didn't have to go!"
"It's just a wedding, you've known Jason for years, and you get on well with Priya...I don't see the problem?" he quirks a brow at her, "I don't want to confuse the boys!"
"Confuse them? How would going to a wedding together confuse them?" he looks at her, "because us, doing things together is confusing! Even for me!"
"But you are their Mum and a part of the family. To be honest with you, I was hoping you'd come to keep my Mum off my back," she chuckles knowing she could handle his Mum just like he could handle hers.
"Fine...if we are going together, it's just as friends that's it!" he nods, hoping this was a step forward...

Dinosaur Jr.: Closing Thoughts & Gratitude
This will be the final entry as host of this Dinosaur Jr.-themed week. I’ve already used the term “housekeeping” in a previous post to reference opening with something I meant to include in its immediate predecessor, but it applies much better to this extended closing sentiment you’re about to traverse (hopefully). What follows is a cursory rundown of some things I originally planned to cover but did not make the cut as well as notes on Dino Jr.-related fare that did not justify an entire entry.
On the live legacy of Dinosaur Jr. Mach I...
My first attempt to see the Mach II incarnation failed as it involved a clandestine road trip I took solo when I was still in high school. I arrived at the out-of-town venue during Dino Jr.’s set and to add insult to injury, was denied entry due to being underage. But subsequent to this I did end up seeing the same lineup play a couple of large-scale festival slots, if “seeing a band” means being separated from a giant stage by a roiling sea of “alternative nation” ding-dongs, a row of bouncers and a lot of ingested acid. By the time the reunited original lineup made it to my town (Memphis, TN) in December of 2006, they were at the end of a really long run of playing songs from the first three albums (plus “The Wagon” and either “Start Choppin’” or “Feel the Pain” if I remember correctly) and were obviously not into it at all. It was loud as all hell, though.
The point being that for my entire adult life I’ve read or heard about how amazing and mind-meltingly loud Dinosaur Jr. Mach I was, but I’m glad I never got to see it because I’m old enough as it is. YouTube isn’t exactly the best barometer by which to measure good live performances, but some are incendiary enough to translate through decades and shitty sound/visual quality (something I first learned when finding a clip of Husker Du encoring with “Eight Miles High” in 1985 that raised my arm hair and still does). Here’s some links to live Dinosaur Jr. that blow me away:
youtube
Live at Cal State in May of 1989 (this must have been one of Barlow’s final shows)
Amazing 1986 set at UMass (Mascis may have still been enrolled at the time). Check J.’s bangs.
(Audio only) Local show allegedly from April of 1985, but they sure do sound tight and confident for a band that had only been playing together for around six months. Accompanying pic definitely dates to ‘85/’86 because Lou had short hair.
Stunning document of Mach II lineup right after Mike Johnson joined. August of 1991. Sound is good and performance is revelatory.
And here’s the next night’s show at the legendary Vera Club. Set includes some Green Mind songs that never made it past this tour.
On Bootlegs/BBC/Peel Sessions releases…
There’s no shortage of Dinosaur Jr. boots out there, but one of my favorites is also one of the first to surface back in the 90s….
This is the JayLouMurph CD...a boot of a NYC show from 1988. The mix might be jarring at first but it grows on you, namely when taking into consideration how loud this band was. Note the deafening tape loop of a man’s voice repeating “THANK YOU! THANK YOU!” meant to further distance the band from whatever the crowd is doing or not doing between songs (they used this tactic at many shows in 1987/88).
youtube
Dinosaur Jr. In Session LP/CD (1999, Strange Fruit) - Official release of BBC/Peel Sessions recordings spanning four sessions (two from 1988, one from 1989 and a Mike Johnson lineup session from 1992) but heavy on the Mach I dates. This is actually one of my all-time favorite Dinosaur Jr. releases and I was planning an entire post based around it. Astonishing performances for the majority of these ten tracks. As for vinyl reissue candidates, this title would be at the top of the list, seeing as how originals on the format are fetching upwards of $100.
On Deep Wound…
There’s a reason Deep Wound was saved for this curtain-dropping post. The short-lived high school hardcore band of Mascis and Barlow has simply never done it for these ears, and I’m coming to you as a pretty big fan of first-gen American hardcore’s more intense and chaotic factions. While active, Deep Wound released a 7” that’s been bootlegged several times (cuz the original will set you back a month’s rent), a demo cassette and contributed two tracks to Gerard Cosloy’s great 1984 compilation, Bands That Could Be God (seen above in a just-taken pic of my personal copy). Bassist Scott Helland went on a longer run in the Outpatients (also on the comp) and vocalist Charles Nakajima joined Mascis and Barlow for a split second in Mogo, which was renamed Dinosaur in honor of his swift dismissal. In the late-80s/early-90s, Nakajima fronted one of the more bizarre bands in the annals of underground metal, Gobblehoof, which released a 7” and two full-lengths. Mascis is the drummer on the first and the producer of the second.
ON COVERS….
Dinosaur Jr. is known, especially since the original lineup reunited in 2005, for their impeccable choice in live covers, with a number of performances seeing the band joined by those responsible for the source material. Besides several different songs by The Stooges and Neil Young, Dinosaur Jr. has covered “Can't Tell No One” & “Nothing” (Negative Approach)“Sunday Bloody Sunday” (U2) “Barmy Army” (The Exploited), “Fun Fun Fun” (Big Boys), “Tame” (Pixies), “Hey Policeman” (Ian Rubbish), “The Boy With the Thorn in His Side” (The Smiths), “I Don’t Live For Today” (Hendrix), and “Hand of Doom” (Black Sabbath). Below are two personal favorites...
youtube
“Thorn” (longtime friend and collaborator Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine joins Dino Jr. for a cover of MBV’s classic shoegaze genesis moment “Thorn” during Dino Jr.’s 7-night 30th Anniversary run at the Bowery Ballroom)
“My Pal” (originally by Australian punk band God and one of the greatest 7”s of the 80s. Dino Jr. is joined by God members Graham Clise and Joel Silbersher for this performance in Melbourne from this January)
Ok, that’s probably enough. I’d like to extend the deepest gratitude to OWOB editor/curator Hendrik for having the patience and flexibility needed to see this through to fruition. To all of the readers who navigated my admittedly subjective choice in no-brainers, nooks, crannies, nuances and other inside baseball as related to the band’s legacy, I am indeed thankful for your eyes and ears. If your takeaway from this week’s coverage of Dinosaur Jr. was of the new and positive variety, I’d love to hear from you. Truthfully, any feedback, good or bad, is welcome and I will respond to everything: [email protected]
Godspeed,

The Soundtrack of Z.’s Life
Unlike all of the mix CD’s I burned for her (yes, I’m old school that way), this last playlist is meant to be shared; Z was all about sharing.
I listed all 32 songs here, if you want to listen to them all the way through. If you want to listen to them one by one there are links on the bottom accompanied with a note on each song.
Some are obvious favorites of Z.’s. Some just spark memories. If you look into Z.’s Itunes account (also RIP), you’ll see a plethora of them comes from soundtracks because that’s how we primarily discovered songs--through movies.
The beauty of music is that it transports you back when the melody and lyrics attach itself to your soul. My hope is if people listen to these songs, you can get a sense of the feelings that Z. evoked in me.
“Everglow” by Coldplay.https://youtu.be/xn_1hFdE-5g This is the only song Z requested to be played at her funeral.
“When You Know” by Shawn Colvin. https://youtu.be/mARCRguuCrk From the Serendpity soundtrack. One of Z.’s rewatchable movies. I can’t confirm this but she probably played this song a lot when we got engaged.
“January Rain” by David Grey.https://youtu.be/FlfvGWBSS4o Again from the Serendipity soundtrack. It’s from the final scene when Johnathan and Sara are reunited.
“Here Comes Your Man” by the Pixies.https://youtu.be/tPgf_btTFlc On July 13, 2018; Z and I went to see the Pixies and Weezer at the DTE energy theater. This was the only song she knew by the Pixies. They didn’t play it.
“Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day.https://youtu.be/NU9JoFKlaZ0 Z once said that she’d rather go to a Green Day concert than to see Lady Gaga. We never did get to see Green Day live, but I put this song in here because Billy Joe Armstrong wrote it for his father who died of cancer when he was ten years old.
“This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” by Natalie Cole.https://youtu.be/rbaoKL1Ei0c From the Parent Trap soundtrack; another of Z.’s rewatchable movies. This movie was playing the Freeform channel on June 21st, 2019; the last night Z. was alive.
“Us” by Regina Spektor.https://youtu.be/fczPlmz-Vug From the 500 Days of Summer Soundtrack. On October 28th, 2009, Z. and I saw our first movie together in the theater.
“There’s a Light that Never Goes Out” by The Smiths.https://youtu.be/3r-qDvD3F3c Also featured from the 500 Days of Summer Soundtrack. Initially, Z. didn’t like the ending of the movie. But after watching it a couple of more times, she had a deeper appreciation for it. Around the time of Z.’s diagnose I had a deeper appreciation for Morrissey’s morbid lyrics.
“Sweet Disposition” by the Temper Trap.https://youtu.be/4C8e7nNLZNs Again, from The 500 Days of Summer Soundtrack. This song could be found in Z.’s favorite scene when Summer and Tom reunite on the train.
“Bookends” by Simon and Garfunkel. https://youtu.be/sovVYInjHjw The last song from the 500 Days of Summer Track. When Tom and Summer breakup.
“Creep” by Radiohead (performed by the Scala Choir). https://youtu.be/3Ado5PMjr5k I remember when The Social Network trailer came out and it played this version of “Creep,” it was well done and haunting with what we do on the internet. Z likes this song but not the original radiohead version.
“Stand By Me” by Ben E. King (performed by Weezer). https://youtu.be/9JpQ_YTJmkE Z. likes Weezer’s cover songs more than their originals.
“Take on Me” by A-Ha (performed by Weezer). https://youtu.be/f7RwDnZI7Tw Another Weezer cover that was performed at the concert we went to on July 13, 2018.
“Walk On” by U2. https://youtu.be/gwKEdFoUB0o I put this song on a Mix CD when Z was undergoing radiation treatment.
“Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls. https://youtu.be/NdYWuo9OFAw Z and I agree that 90’s music was overall better than the modern stuff. We were supposed to see the Goo Goo Dolls this summer at DTE and close out the show with their signature song.
“Married Life” by Michael Giacchino. https://youtu.be/2rn-vMbFglI From the Up soundtrack. Up is one of our favorite animated movies. I’m not sure if I can ever bring myself to watch it again; I felt empathy for Carl when I first watched it and now I feel like I am Carl (without the dog). Z and I watched this movie on our first Valentine’s Day (2011).
“Magic” by B.O.B. w/Rivers Cuomo. https://youtu.be/Cq-NShfefks This song was playing when we at the Hard Rock cafe in Las Vegas in November of 2010. I remember this upbeat song coming on and being joyful that I was with my wife.
“Just a Girl” by No Doubt.https://youtu.be/PHzOOQfhPFg On March 8, 2019, Z and I saw our last movie in the theaters together--”Captain Marvel.” She was in the hospital when Avengers: Endgame came out.
“Time in a Bottle” by Tim Croce. https://youtu.be/dO1rMeYnOmM This was featured in the Quicksilver scene in X-Men: Days of Future Past. We saw this movie on May 31, 2014. This would be the last movie we’d watch in the theater pre-Xavier.
“At Least it was Here” by the 88. https://youtu.be/qEGbjR1Y9Qo This is the opening theme song from the show Community. You pretty much have to have a PHD in pop culture to appreciate the show, so I was very surprised when Z found it enjoyable when we marathoned the first four seasons during the summer of 2014, while taking care of our newborn. .
“I’m Going Home” by Richard O’Brien (performed by Tim Curry). https://youtu.be/mjHksjW4XQk From the Rocky Horror Picture Show. On October 23, 2015, in celebration of our 6th anniversary, we drove 100 miles to Kalamazoo to the Alamo Drafthouse (sadly, that location is now closed). We watched two movies: Crimson Peak and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This was the first time Z. and I had dinner and a movie in 16 months since having Xavier.
“Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. https://youtu.be/ttEMYvpoR-k An entire book has been written about this song. I can’t really add more to it. It’s the only song I can think of that has been played at both weddings and funerals.
“Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen (performed by KD Lang). https://youtu.be/P_NpxTWbovE Probably the best version of the song.
“Heroes by David Bowie” (performed Peter Gabriel). https://youtu.be/35XptNZU2OA Z. marathoned the first season of Stranger Things when she got back from her first surgery in July of 2016. She knew I’d love the show. This song was featured in the third episode “Holly, Jolly.”
“Africa” by Toto (performed by Weezer). https://youtu.be/mk5Dwg5zm2U She got so excited when they played this at the concert last year.
“There Will Never be Another You” by Harry Warren (performed by Chet Baker). https://youtu.be/3xpcBx1Gm-c We had this song playing on Valentine’s Day 2012, when we hosted dinner with our friends.
“Strawberry Fields” by the Beatles. https://youtu.be/HtUH9z_Oey8 On October 27, 2014, we went to the Strawberry fields section of central park.
“Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers & Coldplay. https://youtu.be/FM7MFYoylVs On August 19, 2017, Z and I went to see Coldplay at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH. Having listened to nothing but Coldplay albums on the ride there, she had never encountered this one before. She instantly loved it.
“Song for Someone” by U2. https://youtu.be/RFjcd_d2PhY I put this song on the first mixed CD I made her after diagnosis in 2016. I remember her wiping away a tear.
“Across the Sea” by Weezer. https://youtu.be/1mxEoA3G9Wg Z. considered this the best Weezer song that was not a cover.
“Everything” by Lifehouse. https://youtu.be/Li0jpfysBSI This will forever be our song. This was the first song I put on her first mix CD and was featured at our wedding.
‘Viva La Vida” by Coldplay. https://youtu.be/dvgZkm1xWPE I hope Z. appreciates me ending her soundtrack with this selection. I am not a Coldplay fan (Weezer Ride or Die!), but I think this is the best song I can think of to end things. It’s upbeat but lyrically tragic. The Spanish translation: “Long Live Life.”

My Favorite Album #206 - 10 years of Rilo Kiley ‘Under the Blacklight’ with Katie Brianna
Australian Americana singer/songwriter Katie Brianna on the album that helped her transform herself and stake out her independence as a young woman - Rilo Kiley's 2007 swang song 'Under the Blacklight'.
We make the case for the album as Rilo Kiley's best record - and how it represents a breadth and musical ambition beyond their previous catalogue. We the songs fall in the evolution of frontwoman Jenny Lewis, from RK's indie rock origins to her subsequent solo success. Katie talks about why 'Under the Blacklight' is the album she wishes she was 'cool enough' to make, and we really overwork the 'your band is your baby' metaphor.
