Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #30
August 2-9 2024
The Department of Interior announced the largest investment since 1979 in outdoor recreation and conservation projects. The $325 million will go to support State, territorial, DC, and tribal governments in buying new land for parks and outdoor recreation sites. It also supports expansion and refurbishment of existing sites.
The EPA announced that Birmingham Alabama will get $171 million to update and replace its water system. The city of Birmingham is 70% black and like many black majority cities as struggled with aging water systems and lead pipes causing dangerous drinking water conditions. This investment is part of the Biden-Harris administrations plan to replace all of the nation's lead pipes.
The Department of Energy announced $2.2 billion in investments in the national power grid to help boost resiliency in the face of extreme weather. The projects will add 13 gigawatts of capacity, support 5,000 new jobs and upgrade 1,000 miles of transmission. Major projects will cut power outages in the west, drive down energy prices in New England, add off shore wind, and enable the development of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s wind resources.
The Justice Department won its massive anti-trust case against Google. A federal judge ruled that Google was an illegal monopoly. The DOJ has an ongoing antitrust suit against Apple, while the Federal Trade Commission is suing Facebook and Amazon for their monopolist practices
The US Government announced $3.9 billion in direct aid to Ukraine. The money will help the Government of Ukraine make up for massive budget short falls caused by the war with Russia. It'll help pay the salaries of teachers, emergency workers, and other public employees, as well helping displaced persons, low-income families and people with disabilities.
The Department of Energy announced $190 million to improve air quality and energy upgrades in K-12 schools. The grants to 320 schools across 25 states will impact 123,000 students, 94% of these schools service student bodies where over half the students qualify for free and reduced lunch. In the face of climate change more schools have been forced to close for extreme heat. These grants will help schools with everything from air filtration, to AC, to more robust energy systems, to replacing lighting.
USAID announced $424 million in additional humanitarian aid to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Due to ongoing conflict and food insecurity, 25 million Congolese are in need of humanitarian aid. This year alone the US has sent close to a billion dollars in aid to the DRC, making it the single largest donor to the crisis.
The Senate approved President Biden's appointment of Stacey Neumann of Maine, Meredith Vacca of New York, and Joseph Saporito Jr. of Pennsylvania to life time federal Judgeships. This brings the total of judges appointed by President Biden to 205. President Biden is the first President who's judicial nominations have not been majority white men, Judge Vacca is the first Asian American to serve in her district court. President Biden has also focused on former public defenders, like Judge Saporito, and former labor lawyers like Judge Neumann, as well as civil rights lawyers.

📝 Sponsor a WIP for Palestine, Sudan and DRC
Hello everyone. After seeing many fundraisers shared here on tumblr struggle to get funds, I've decided to do something to help them raise money.
> From July 11th to August 11th, if you donate at least $5 to any verified fundraisers, I will write one of my WIPs (works in progress) of your choice. If this gets a lot of support, and I find the time to do so, I'll change the deadline or just do this again.
> For every $5 donated, I'll write 100 words (same amount for whatever currency the fundraiser is in). If I finish any of the WIPs here, you won't be able to sponsor it anymore. I'll try to add new ones as we go.
> I'll try to write as soon as possible after I get the donation receipt, and I'll post updates here on this blog.
❗️How To Join:
1) Donate to a verified fundraiser or a trustworthy organization, highlights below
- GazaFunds
- Sudanese Fundraisers
- Sudanese Fundraisers 2
- Palestine Organizations

2) Save the receipt and send it to me via (non-anon) ask or DM
- Make sure that the following information is visible on the receipt: the amount donated, the date, and your first name (optional but preffered)
3) Send me, with the recepit, the WIP you'd like sponsored
- You can send the title, number or fandom of the WIP, whatever.
✏️ WIPs:
1) (Untitled). Fandom: Sherlock Holmes. Wordcount: 393 words.
- Holmes and Watson ride horses in the countryside to help with Holmes' stress due to lack of cases.
2) Herdólia. Original work. Wordcount: 224 words.

A reminder to you that "we", non-Palestinians, are not freeing Palestine. Palestinians are freeing Palestine, and Palestine is freeing us.
Understanding Palestine opens you up to the ways you can change for the better. Striking, boycotts, having difficult conversations, making new habits, all these things have the power to change the world.
Palestinians are freeing Palestine, and the rest of us have the honor of supporting them in it. We are not free until Palestine is free, until DRC is free, until Yemen is free, until Hawaii and Sudan are free, until we all take up the cause of anti-colonial struggle and decolonial reconstruction.
No one is free until everyone is free. That's lifetimes of work, generations of work. Respect and learn from the generations that came before you, and your peers.

tw: rape, sexual assault, violence on women & children
"SAVING THE WOMEN OF CONGO!
"Congolese women are paying a terrible price for the conflict in eastern DRC. Those who escape the violence are often forced to find shelter in makeshift tent camps, without proper facilities or security - where they face a high risk of sexual assault." from African Stream, 26/Mar/2024:
(caption cont under video)
Many have children in their care and seek work outside the camps, including in dangerous cobalt mines. This has also left them vulnerable to militants who abduct and rape.
Children are also subjected to sexual abuse, with stigma and unwanted pregnancies making the trauma even harder to bear.
According to a UNICEF report, the rise in sexual violence in Congo went up by 37% in the first three months of 2023, compared with the year before.
The systematic use of rape as a weapon of war has been labeled a “medical and humanitarian emergency,” as aid groups struggle to provide adequate health and psychological services to affected women and children.

Have seen very little discussion on this website about the situation in Haiti and figured maybe I’d try to start the conversation?
For those who aren’t aware, Haiti is the only country that led a successful slave rebellion which led to the establishment of an independent country, and a day hasn’t passed where they haven’t been punished for it. The country never had a chance to flourish as the west made sure to suck it economically dry and then dip when nothing was left.
This has left the country horrifically unstable in every way possible. However, the last few years, it has been on the brink of collapse due to absolutely no political leadership and as of now, Haiti has completely collapsed. The country is mostly run by gangs all competing for power. There is no where for refugees to escape. The west has completely abandoned any meaningful intervention and it has mostly been South American, Middle Eastern, and African countries who only seem interested in trying to bring peace. But since 2024 has begun, it is a terrifying place to be full of completely innocent people being screwed over by the west for standing up for themselves.
Of course, this is heavily over simplified and I have no personal connection to Haiti. So under the cut, I’m adding much more accurate and insightful information, as well as fundraisers, books, petitions, and Haitian run businesses and social media accounts. As someone who is studying history, it doesn’t take long to realize most nations struggling today have been victimized for wanting autonomy and freedom. From Palestine to Sudan, to DRC to Ukraine, there is so much preventable tragedy. As someone from a country who has historically inflicted these conditions on a lot of these nations, it’s frustrating to feel powerless to the injustice. I truly find the only thing that puts my mind at peace is education and spreading awareness. Don’t let their suffering be in vain.

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have begun vaccination against mpox, nearly two months after the disease outbreak that spread to several countries was declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization. Some of the 265,000 doses donated to the DRC by the EU and the US were administered in the eastern city of Goma in North Kivu province, where hospitals and health workers have been overstretched, struggling to contain the new and possibly more infectious strain of mpox.

I know the Disability Day of Mourning traditionally commemorates disabled people murdered by their parents and/or caregivers, but I wanted to take a moment to also commemorate the disabled lives lost during the genocides taking place in Palestine, the DRC, Sudan, and across the globe (including in the US). There are many ways for a system to perpetuate ableist violence and we must struggle as a community against all of them.
May the disabled souls taken from us rest in peace, every single one, and may the members of the disabled community currently fighting for their lives and the lives of their loved ones receive the support and safety they deserve.
If you have a bit to spare, please consider donating to Crips for eSims for Gaza and supporting their vital work.

Death’s Head Divination is collaborating with Slow Mornings Co. to bring you a silly sticker design + ways you can support your local communities and global issues as we move forward through uncertain times 🌿
SMC’s “C(r)apitalism” slogan centers the idea that capitalism causes harm through extracting resources from both people and the planet to fuel a system that benefits only the few at the top. Survival within it is necessary while we work to divest and destroy it though. Thus we need to focus on mutual aid networks, free resources, community care and slowing down despite our common struggle.
The sticker itself represents how quickly technology becomes irrelevant under this system (who remembers Blackberries?) while contributing to pollution and exploitation. While we both recognize stickers aren’t an answer to environmentalism, they are accessible ways to support creators directly and get messages out to your communities.
Following this though, we would like to donate $1 of every sticker sale to Friends of the Congo - a 501(c)(3) advocacy organization that partners with Congolese to bring change to the DRC, where cobalt extraction for phones and computers is rampant and exploitative.
Additionally, we have launched a submission form where you can add your local community’s free and accessible resources to a growing directory for everyone to use. This could include free fridges, libraries, inclusive places of worship, food banks, shelters, businesses, online events, inclusive legal and health resources, etc. This includes within the US and globally, wherever you live.

A while ago i sent you this poem [https://sprachgitter.tumblr.com/post/736478972385345536/one-day-the-exile-and-the-fleeing-will-have-earth] and a few weeks ago, I wrote my grieving friend a ghazal. She would like to see it published so we've decided every time I'm agitated or overwhelmed with people's apathy in North America, I'll submit it to another publication/zine/journal. In my friend's words, "Nothing scares them as much as words" 🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉
I remember this poem its so amazing. Thank you so much for saying this, I think your friend is right, nothing scares them as much as words. Please do keep talking and talk about the other struggles in Darfur, DRC, Tigray, and around the world as well. Let us work together to make a more free world!

What’s happening in the Democratic Republic of the Congo?
Silent Genocide in CONGO!!!!!!
Right now, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is in serious crisis - but the world isn't taking notice.
Children’s lives are being turned upside down as they leave behind their homes and schools. They face violence, hunger and disease every day.
The DRC is currently facing one of the world's worst humanitarian and food insecurity disasters, and has become the second largest internally displaced people’s crisis globally.
25.4 million people are food insecure, including, 13.2 million children.
7.3 million people are currently displaced, 3.7 million are children.
To make matters worse, the DRC is now facing the rapid spread of the deadly mpox virus, which has been declared as a public health emergency by the World Health Organisation.
90% of all mpox cases have been reported inside the DRC, which is putting a strain on an already fragile health systemthat is still reeling from past outbreaks of Ebola and COVID-19 and a scarcity of staff and medical supplies. Children are at higher risk than adults of contracting the virus - with 70% of DRC’s cases in children under 15 – and almostfour times more likely to die. It is the most vulnerable children who will be worse off - the undernourished children and those living in crowded refugee camps with limited access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene.
In the DRC, families have lost their livelihoods and are struggling to provide their children with the medical care, or enough food they need to survive.
The increase in hunger and disease is a result of the terrifying violence that has been escalating since March 2022. This conflict has killed thousands and caused massive amounts of people to flee their homes. Between January and April 2024 alone, more than 900,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
Families are now sheltering wherever they can, in buildings like churches and schools or in large camps.
For the lucky ones who escaped with their lives, they couldn’t take belongings or essential items.
Livelihoods had to be left behind, and children like Mbokani* were forced to leave their schools – cutting short their education.
For some children, fleeing home brought more danger.
Children are particularly vulnerable when violence breaks out. Children can become separated from their family in the chaos, abducted or recruited into fighting group
Even before the recent fighting, malnutrition levels in the country were already high, but now families are living day to day, having no idea where their next meal might be coming from.
Over 26 million people, including 14.5 million children, are in urgent need of food aid. This includes children like 1-year-old Anthoo*.
His older sister Marie*, 10, was worried until their aunt took him to a Save the Children treatment centre.
For many children, the escalation of the violence meant they were cut off from another vital place of safety – their school.
In the displacement camps, Child Friendly Spaces are being set up, to give children a space to recover from their experiences and be with their friends.
What you can do?
We need to talk more about the situation in DRC. Here are three small things you can do today to help children:
Spread awareness! Tell people about what’s happening to children and their families in DRC.
Share this story with your friends and family using the social share buttons in the navigation.
Donate to Save the Children to help children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and across the world.
