Ur comment about Tom watching Antiques Roadshow with fish and chips has got me wondering about what you think the HP characters go to chipper orders are? I’d wager Dumbledore would enjoy a spicebag myself..

i'm genuinely screaming.

dumbledore is one hundo after a spice bag, as are ron and tonks. they are the three people who have made the correct choice.

as for the others...

harry [dursleys] and tom [orphanage] are obviously choosing the plainest option - cod and chips. tom would go in for mushy peas and a packet of benson and hedges alongside his. harry - given his canonical sweet tooth - is getting some sort of deep-fried chocolate bar as a chaser.

hermione [pretentious] is having the thinking woman's fish order - plaice and chips. unless she's been drinking, when she - like ginny - loves a battered sausage for the innuendo potential.

arthur's having scampi, because that seems the most muggle, and a selection of every sauce in the place. molly's having haddock, which she considers respectable, and is being joined in that choice by mcgonagall.

sirius [depressed] is taking the risk on a chipper pie - a gristly steak-and-kidney that's been sitting under a heat lamp all evening, for example. he prefers the rats he ate while living in that cave.

lupin [there] is having plain chips, no sauce or anything.

snape [ill-tempered] is going for one of northern ireland's greatest chip shop creations - a pastie supper. which can - like him, to be quite honest - best be described as a lump of mystery meat.

neville [northern] is obviously having chips and gravy, in fear that his gran would disown him otherwise.

luna [disconnected from reality] is going for the other one of northern ireland's greatest chip shop creations - a cowboy [pronounced coyboy] supper.

any malfoy [posh] is leaving the function and never speaking to you again if you suggest going to the chipper [good]. but narcissa secretly loves a curry butty.

bellatrix [unhinged] is indulging in a habit i didn't realise was unusual until i went to uni in england, and slapping tinned pineapple and thousand-island dressing on top of a portion of chips and calling it "hawaiian".

The last ask I sent started getting out of hand, so I left the Snape's mount to that and here's the rest of the ideas that are set in Spaghetti Western Style AU (if anyone wants to use them, please feel free):

The town is called HogMeade - it's named for the two most historically influential families in town, the Hogs and the Meads, who didn't actually get along but tried to one-up each other via community projects. It's one of the gateway towns, so it's rather large.

The local military fort is Fort Phoenix, presided over by Sergeant Major Albus Dumbledore; he was promoted, in days gone by, for his capture of Grindelwald, and put in charge of Fort Phoenix out West to keep him from becoming a political threat by those in the East.

Minerva McGonagall is the next highest ranking officer at the fort. No one questions her rank or authority because she's earned both.

Flitwick is the sheriff of HogMeade; he's a sharpshooter, and has been teaching Snape the art. Flitwick has a normal-sized horse and does not need help climbing into the saddle, but he does have special stir-ups (bought from Weasley and Sons) to accommodate him while in saddle.

Hagrid is Flitwick's deputy; his Da was a fur-trapper, but he likes animals too much to take up the family business. He has a large draft horse and an older model of rifle that is prone to jamming. It's rumored he has a half brother in the Northeast.

Sprout and Pomfrey run the (more successful) doctor's office - Sprout makes the tinkers/ointments and handles day-to-day injuries and Pomfrey is the surgeon and mid-wife. Snape, who previously apprenticed with an apothecary, works here sometimes. They, sometimes, ask Hagrid to perform unofficial veterinarian services as well.

Pince is headmistress of the schoolhouse.

Trelawney works in the saloon; she's babbled at Snape the few times he's gone inside about his past catching up with him, so he stays clear of that specific saloon.

Sinistra, Burbage, and Hooch are local stagecoach guards; any coach under their guard is sure to reach its destination and return home safely. Snape gets along with them well enough when they cross paths.

Snape works at the Hogs-Warts Ranch as a hand; Dumbledore gave him a letter of recommendation and paid for his fare from the East coast, and he's deeply indebted to the man. He's not trying to make friends in town, but he is trying to re-establish himself and distance himself from the reputation he left behind; he's, of course, a very private individual. The Hogs-Warts don't really pay him (they give him food/board for his labor), so he takes odd jobs around town and is trying to become self-sufficient/able to repay his debts as best he can. He gets called to the Fort on various tasks, even in the middle of the night.

Tom Riddle is a manipulative businessman/politician type that has a band of outlaws at his whim to go intimidate (burn down houses) of those who refuse to sell him their properties or vote against his policies. He's failed to gain the level of power he wants in the East, so he's turned his sights on an easier prize to the West.

Lucius Malfoy is a ranch owner from old money; he's never spent a day on horseback except for in leisure and is rarely actually living at his ranch. He prefers his eastern estate, with its white peacocks. His ranch breeds pedigree horses and prized farm animals. He's Tom Riddle's trust-fund.

The Potter-Black-Prince (PBP) Trading Company used to be the biggest importer on the East coast until the three heirs broke up the business into three smaller trading companies over a dispute. It's rumored the families are cursed due to a series of tragedies leading to the decline of their wealth/influence (including the Prince Trading Company going under and the family disappearing into obscurity); there's a family superstition that if the three families can reconcile, it will undo the curse, but Snape doesn't put much belief in it all.

Aurora Sinistra headcanons since I’m working on a comic chapter about her right now

- She was born in 1955

- She’s a Slytherin

- Her father was an American wizard named Apollo. A cowboy who navigated by the stars. He met Aurora’s mother on a trip to the UK to meet other magical astronomers, but she (Joan) was actually a muggle schoolteacher he met in a pub. He eventually moved from Bozeman, Montana to the UK to marry her.

- Apollo taught Aurora all about the stars and riding horses.

- Her paternal grandparents and father were radical unionists.

- When Aurora graduated from Hogwarts, she returned to America to get a degree (in mugggle universities!). She didn’t stop until she got her PHD (she’s a doctor!) - She moved back to the UK when her father got seriously ill in 1989. That’s when she came back to work at Hogwarts.

- She’s nocturnal and prefers wearing PJs. When she needs to wear clothes acceptable for the wizarding world, she’ll borrow some of Snape’s. Otherwise, it’s jeans and cowboy shirts.

Then he comes to stand by Harry, and his muscles seize as Mr Riddle’s arm brushes his own.

Option 1: Cowboy Snape rides a mule or a hinny instead of a horse. Others scoff at and ridicule his mount and him for having it ("you'll never get anywhere fast on that, my boy"/ "like rider like mount: stubborn and difficult"/ "suits you, Sniv; it's half as ugly as you"/ "Really, Snape, you couldn't find a descent horse?"/ "There are better companions to be had, Severus"/ "a half-blood for a half-blood, Snapeykins?/"this is not a horse, Mr. Snape."/etc.), but Snape knows his riding companion is more reliable, sturdy, intelligent and loyal than any horse could ever hope to be, and he wouldn't trade the beast ever. Plus, it won't allow anyone else to ride it; the time it wiped Black off its back with a post and dumped Lockhart over its head into a watering trough are some of Snape's favorite attempts at other people trying to ride his mount.

I just like the parallels to canon giving Snape a riding companion that is a) a hybrid and b) called "A beast of burden" (an animal employed to carry heavy loads or to perform other heavy work) bring. Also, hinnies are considered to have temperaments that remind me of Snape's doe.

Option 2 (the purely aesthetic choice and the most hilarious choice here): Cowboy Snape rides a Thestral. In which case, half the people who see him are staring because he's bobbing along mid-air in riding position, and the other half are staring because, of course, Severus Snape would ride a Thestral.
