Season 2 Rewatch Drabbles--2x09 The Queen of Hearts
Summary: A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my rewatch of season 2 of Once Upon a Time as an attempt to finally jump start the muse again. There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season. Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on the very beginnings of Captain Swan’s epic love story, as soon as a certain dashing pirate makes his appearance.
Word Count: 1262
Other Chapters: (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (10) (11) (12) (13) (14) (15) (16) (17) (17.5) (18) (19) (20) (21-22) (22)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Note: I know, I know. This installment is more than twice the word count I limited myself to in these drabbles (making this clearly not a drabble), but I couldn’t end it with that first scene. I just couldn’t! We needed a little hope and inspiration after all!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Dried up. Dead. Useless. Much like you.
Emma slumped down the rocky wall of Rumplestiltskin’s cell and settled on the ground, dropping her head as the utter futility of their situation washed over her.
For several minutes after Cora and Hook had left the cave, her anger had fueled her, giving her the strength to use her sword to bang away at the bars of their prison, to use brute force to try to get them the hell out of here.
If nothing else, it had been a good outlet for her aggression.
The absolute son of a bitch!
He’d betrayed her, betrayed them all, stolen the heart out of a princess’s chest for the sole purpose of manipulating them. Who did that?
You betrayed him first, a small voice in the back of her mind whispered.
It was that voice that made the fight go out of her entirely. Maybe if she hadn’t betrayed him, he would have continued to help them. Maybe it would be Cora in this cell instead of them. He’d already shown himself to be endlessly resourceful. Who’s to say she hadn’t picked the wrong side?
Not that she had any illusions that he was anything more than an absolute blood-thirsty mercenary, who would stoop to absolutely anything to get what he wanted. No, she was right to not trust him.
Where she messed up was in trusting herself.
Dried up. Dead. Useless. Much like you.
He was right; she was useless. What good had she ever been? Yeah, she was the “savior”, but this cell, the scroll Rumple had written, proved it wasn’t anything special about her. She was the savior because Rumple had made her the savior. Now that she’d broken the curse she was indeed useless.
And even a man she’d just met could see it. The two of them understood each other, after all.
Dried up. Dead. Useless. Much like you.
The thing is…he hadn’t meant it; not really. Her superpower had not only flipped on at that phrase but sounded as loud as a five-alarm fire warning. He’d been lashing out, trying to hurt her.
Because of how badly you hurt him.
The guilt bumped the hopelessness out of the way to take center stage.
He may have been lying his (smoking hot) ass off when he compared her to the bean, but his insistence that he wouldn’t have left her at the top of the beanstalk? Yeah, that had been entirely sincere. He’d trusted her, believed in her, put his life on the line for her, and she’d betrayed him.
Because I knew he’d screw me over the first chance he got!
Her superpower flared to life again. That was a load of crap and she knew it. She’d betrayed him, because she sensed she could trust him. She sensed he could become something to her, something big and important and all encompassing, and she couldn’t go there again.
And because of her fear, they were in the mess they were in now.
Mary Margaret continued talking about hope and optimism, insisting they would find a way out and get home, but truth be told, Emma was beginning to wonder if they’d all be better off if they just left her here.
She was, after all, dried up, dead and useless.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“Hey!”
Killian’s heart leapt at the sound of her voice, the relief overwhelming.
He was under no illusions that he was anything more than a villain. He’d done what he had to do to preserve his chance at revenge, aye, but he’d done so at a price that turned his stomach.
He’d never forget the squelching sound that accompanied his removal of Aurora’s heart. He’d killed before, of course. Killed, injured, maimed, manipulated, all of it.
But he’d never ripped out a heart.
The bile rose in his throat just thinking of it, visions of Milah swimming before his eyes. What had he become in his quest to avenge her?
Still, as uncomfortable as ripping out Aurora’s heart had been, it had been nothing to the look in Swan’s eyes when he’d compared her to the dried-out bean. It was such a stupid and preposterous lie that he was surprised he’d been able to deliver it with a straight face.
She was anything but useless. She was extraordinary. He could see that even through the pain of her betrayal.
How could he truly blame her for her actions? Was she not protecting herself just as he was? She was desperate to get back to her son after all.
The guilt deepened at that. Killian had already separated one boy from his mother, and the guilt of that had eaten away at both Milah and him every day of their lives together. What manner of man was he to break up another family?
It had been enough that he had almost almost changed his mind, almost defied Cora.
But that would have been suicide. And a suicide from which nothing useful could have come.
Given that, he’d tamped down his guilt and left with Cora, hoping beyond hope that Swan would find some way home, that her resourcefulness would get her out of that blasted cave.
And so, when the princess brigade had shown up on the scene, shooting the compass from Cora’s hand and rushing them like a troop of avenging angels, his most predominant emotion was relief.
Cora ordered him to get the compass, and he’d turned to comply, coming face to face with Emma Swan bearing down on him with her sword outstretched.
A blind man could have seen her lack of skill with the weapon. He could have ended their “duel” before it even began, but he had no desire to defeat her, even less to do her bodily harm. His mind went to the bean he possessed. Perhaps there was a way for the both of them to achieve their objectives. Perhaps he could let her obtain her prize—could prove to her that he was wrong, so very bloody wrong, in the way he compared her to the bean.
Perhaps he could remind her just how special she was while at the same time retaining his ability to exact his revenge on his sworn enemy.
So, he’d toyed with her, remaining on the defensive (although he couldn’t resist a bit of blatant innuendo once he’d flipped her to her back. The opportunity to see the surprise—and maybe even a bit of desire—in her eyes, too delicious to pass up).
In the end, back in possession of the compass, she’d dealt him a blow that knocked all sense from him. He’d come to minutes later—just in time to watch in horror as Cora’s hand shot forward, plunging into Swan’s chest. He’d been frozen in place, the shock and revulsion so pervasive he couldn’t move; couldn’t speak, couldn’t even cry out.
But then it had happened. A burst of magic shot forth from Swan, blasting Cora back with such force that she was rendered unconscious.
He was right; she truly was remarkable. Just like this bean that would soon be restored to its former glory, Emma Swan was back.
Far from dried up, dead and useless, Emma Swan was the best of them all.

Axiom's End Timeline
This contains spoilers for Axiom's End. The completed timeline will be posted here when it's finished. You can make a submission here
Noumena Timeline - Earth years 1045 C.E. – Ampersand’s creation 1352 C.E. – humans are brought back to the superorganism for research around the time of The Black Plague affecting Europe *date unknown* – Transients (Physterines) develop the electromagnetic pulses to incapacitate amygdalines, and begin to become aggressive against them. The Superorganism discovers the population explosion of transients, and views this as a threat. Ampersand and a few other Oligarchs petition that a stable population size is not a threat in and of itself, but the Superorganism ultimately decides to sterilize the entire planet. 1629 C.E. – Fremdan Genetic Purge occurs due to those who opposed the sterilization of the Physterines 26 February 1971 – The Fremda group seeks refuge on Earth in Inarajan, Guam, not knowing just how advanced humans have become. 6 March 2007 – An email is sent regarding language samples of Pequod Phonemic which is included in Nils Ortega’s “Fremda Memo” in the Broken Seal, published 24 August 2007 23 August 2007 – The Ampersand Event Occurs 24 August 2007 – prompted by the Ampersand Event, Nils Ortega leaks the Fremda Memo 20 September 2007 – The Obelus Event Occurs at 1:13 pm PDT, Eli Gerald publishes “Follow the Noise” on the DeceptiNation Blog, and Nils publishes an Op-Ed titled “These Disparate Lives” 21 September 2007 – Nils publishes “Obelus” in the Broken Seal – Cora’s house gets invaded during the early hours of the night by a (presumed) Ampersand – Cora rides with Bard to Santa Crus in order to avoid the CIA, hoping to join her Aunt Luciana and lie low – Douglas Siegel publishes “Expanding the scope of Ortega” in The New Yorker regarding Luciana Ortega – Ampersand follows Cora to Santa Cruz, placing an earbud into Cora’s ear while she is under a sedation of his design
22 September 2007 – The Fremda Group loses four members to elective suicide, bringing their numbers to 27 total. The four are known by the US government as AG-ETI-008 “Scivo”, AG-ETI-015 “Logi”, AG-ETI-028 “Birdo”, and AG-ETI-042 “Verda”. The Fremda group is described as locking the government out of their shelter after the Obelus Event occurred, likely in an attempt to hide from Obelus. 24 September 2007 – Ampersand tries to control Cora in order to break into the Googleplex building in Silicon Valley in order to locate the Fremda group. She is the 3rd human under his control to attempt this. She is able to escape with an incapacitated Ampersand due to an electromagnetic pulse that causes a black out. 26 September 2007 – Cora and Ampersand use Luciana’s contact with CIA Agent Sol Kaplan to help Ampersand gain access to the Fremda group. He directs them to Vandenberg AFB. – Nils publishes “Where’s the Revolution?” in The Broken Seal – Lewis Callum publishes “The Revelation of Nils Ortega” on the DeceptiNation blog – Ampersand is allowed to meet the Fremda group. – ROSA is reinstated. – The Fremda group and Cora, Luciana, and Kaplan are transported to the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex bunker in El Paso County, Colorado
27 September 2007 – Ampersand performs Cefo’s autopsy at NORAD, where Cefo and the rest of the Fremda are described as having a higher quantity of organic nervous system, body parts, and a microbiome. – The rest of the former ROSA employees arrive at NORAD 2 October 2007 – Nils publishes “What did the president Know, and When Did He Know It?” in The Broken Seal which exposes President Bush in his lie of knowing about First Contact with extraterrestrials – Luciana is arrested and held for 36 hours – Aisha Jackson publishes “Hunt for Cause of Massive Guam Power Outage Begins” in The Washington Post – Physterine sighting accounts codenamed “Sloop John B” are confirmed by Ampersand after Sol Kaplan shows him files of plausible extraterrestrial interactions – Ampersand meets with the secretary of defense, telling him that opening up communication freely between humans and amygdalines will lead to a sort of colonization event. Despite this, the secretary of defense insists Ampersand give them a means of communication. – George Walker Bush announces that he will officially resign as the 43rd president on 3 October 2007
5 October 2007 – Ampersand transports Cora out of NORAD for a moment to visit her empty home and see the stars in the desert.
6 October 2007 – Obelus breaks into NORAD using an electromagnetic pulse and Cora evacuates to Langley, the CIA headquarters. The Genome makes itself known as a small, partially natural amygdaline. Cora, the genome, Vincent, and Kaplan are given orders to leave. Their caravan of vehicles are taken out by another one of Obelus’s EM pulses. Cora, with the Genome in hand, runs from the scene to safety – Vincent Park as well as a few other unnamed CIA employees are annihilated by Obelus and his Similars. – Amygdaline Similar Brako is assumed deceased.
7 October 2007 – Luciana receives a text on her burner phone as to where Cora is located and picks her up, transporting them and the genome to one of Luciana’s contacts in Christianburg, Virginia. Luciana gives Cora coordinates to an abandoned warehouse two hours away that arrived with the text of Cora’s earlier location, suspecting that’s where Ampersand would like to meet. – Cora meets Ampersand and Obelus appears. She is held captive with other Fremdans until Ampersand can bring Obelus the genome
9 October 2007 – Nils publishes “Open Letter” on The Broken Seal calling for his family to be released from government custody. ?? October 2007 – Cora attempts to undermine Obelus by telling his similars that he is Fremdan and Ampersand’s symphyle, rousing suspicion amongst their ranks. – Ampersand ultimately doesn’t comply, detonating an EMP allowing Cora will be able to evacuate the remaining Fremdans and the genome with transport plates. – Cora attacks Obelus with a shovel while he is recovering from the EMP – Cora is mutilated by Obelus, the Genome attempts to cause a distraction which ultimately results in her death – In an attempt to get Ampersand to leave Earth, Obelus warns Cora that Ampersand was created to dominate and if he stays on Earth, any assimilation will result in his desire to take control of the Earth and that humans will hate him for it. – Obelus’s similars return and challenge him. A fight ensues and he’s incapacitated. The similars take the genome, Obelus, and themselves back to the Superorganism. – Cora is repaired by Ampersand.
~ 21 October 2007 – Cora awakens at a hospital with her mother Demi and Luciana with her who tell her that she’s been gone for two weeks. – Cora is debriefed by the CIA – On the second night of her hospital stay, Cora and Ampersand confirm that they have fusion bonded and are now symphyles.

Here I'll write the comments as I watch the new Teen Wolf movie, so SPOILERS!!
.
.
.
SPOILER
.
.
.
1) WTF! Why would you keep a evil spirit IN A RESTAURANT?! Easily accessible to anyone. And what if you open the wrong jar while cooking?!
Unbelievable.
2) All the Scott's first scene... kinda cringe
3) I'm not gonna lie, I missed the intro song 🎶
4) I've never heard Deaton speak so much (and for my Italian friends: lo vedo un po' sciupato)
5) Derek, my beautiful love! And hello, Stiles and Derek's son (called like Stiles' grandfather, Elias. iykyk)
6) Why do they talk about the Nemeton like they don't know it?
7) I love Derek as a dad. My heart is melting.
8) Parrish and Malia don't make any sense.
Update from the end of the movie. Ok, I kinda like them, but they still don't make any sense.
9) Apparently Deaton can fight now. Plus every time I see the nogitsune all I can see is this:
10) For a moment I thought I was watching the Winx... I guess some things never change. I surely didn't miss the bad special effects.
And why does everyone needs to be naked??
11) OMG!!! VICTORIAAA. This woman scares me even now
12) I've always dislike Allison, now even more: my poor poor Derek! 😭
Ok no, false alarm, but I don't change my opinion.
I really love Dad Derek btw.
13) I missed Peter and Chirs together. My other ship
14) Scott to Eli: "Find your dad". What if instead you tell him where his dad is too, since you do know Derek is at home but Eli doesn't *facepalm pt.2*
15) The parallel between Dark Allison and Scott and Dark Allison and her killing spree against my precious Erica and Boyd. YOU SEE WHY I DON'T LIKE HER?! (She didn't even say sorry for that btw)
16) The Sheriff killing Oni while sitting on the couch is on another level
17) Derek dies pt.2 (my heart can't take it anymore)
18) What?! Why, tell me why did you run against theirs swords. You literally killed yourself, Eli. *facepalm pt.3*
19) Peter, that was cringe af. And Chris wdym with 8 hours at most when we know from the show that it takes about 24h before the death?? Omg I can't with this movie
20) And now why do they care about the game? Hello, your father's going to die, Eli!!
21) Oh, she's really doing it. I didn't expect it (Allison shooting at Scott)
22) Ouch, that must hurt (Nogitsune with a new hole in the middle of his forehead)
23) I missed Chris and Peter's duo, but please give me back Peter's old hair style, this one is a death crime
24) Jackson my beautiful little lizard. I've always loved you ♡
25) How disgusting! It's like Rufus (from Kim Possible) became the Darach:
Do you se the resemblance too? Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the nogitsune unmummified.
26) The scene is kinda cheap but gods if I missed them
27) Why are Derek's eyes blue?? They were yellow again after the the Mexican fountain of youth
Update: nevermind. They reminded me that after Derek evolves his eyes go back to blue.
28) Can anyone stay dead in this city?? Harris too, come on!
29) You're giving your son TO SCOTT?? Are you serious, Derek?? It's like a big child, he can't take care of Eli. If Stiles was there, he would tell you the same (but if Stiles was there, Eli would be with his other dad -Stiles- so Scott wouldn't be even an option but I stand for my objection)
30) HIS EYES!! HIS EYES TURNED RED LIKE A TRUE ALPHA (btw, Derek, you've always been the alpha to me)
31) They've vanished. No corpse no death. And even then, we're in Beacon Hills so what is one more resurrection, right? Right??
32) SCOTT, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!! YOU'RE IN YOUR 30s, ALLISON IS STILL 16/17!
And why are you kissing anyway! Derek's dead*! (*to them, 'cause in reality Derek's alive, safe and sound. I know it)
33) Excuse me, can I see at least one tear for Derek Sourwolf Hale, please? Are y'all being serious? Scott is almost smiling!!
Also, they had a funeral for Derek but didn't invite Cora, his sisters... they didn't even tell Isaac that Allison is alive (you know, Allison, your boyfriend. I know you kinda forgot him even when you were dying but if you remember everything then Isaac is supposed to be in that everything too). They didn't even call Stiles!
35) Why does it seem that when the Sheriff was talking about the jeep he was actually talking about Stiles and Derek (or sterek as a ship/concept). No matter what, we sterek shipper will stand. Always and forever.
Final thoughts
I thought worse but at the same time it felt rush. I wanted to see more Eli and Malia bonding. Also the way the Sheriff cares about Eli it seems more like a grandfather to a grandson (if you know what I mean) but we couldn't really see that. And can we talk about Derek and Noah (John for the friends)'s partnership? Or how Derek speaks about Stiles with Noah as he's still in touch with him??
And where is Eli come from anyway?! Are we finally normalize mpreg?
Final final thoughts
I didn't like this movie. It was like a big bad Scallison fanfiction found on wattpad (ao3 is better). A lot of things were forgotten and other changed.
BUT
There's always a but (as in the Derek's "death" *wink wink*).
This movie gave us a lot of sterek material.
I'm afraid of what Jeff Davis' mind could possibly come with for another movie, probably more about Eli's past which means a mother for sure (unfortunately the world isn't ready for mpreg yet I'm afraid) and less sterek material. But at the same time I want to see Derek alive again, I want to see how they would manage with two true alpha and how Derek and Eli's relationship would evolve.
I want a lot of things to see but I'm afraid they won't give me any of them, so I can't decide either I want another movie or not.
What do you think?

Nobody asked for it, but I’m doing it anyway. Here’s some info on my girl Cora
Gender: Female if you can’t tell
Genre: Half Rock/Half Techno(according to good old Google, she would be Electro Rock)
Age: 20 at the start of her story, 21 three months later
Family: She has a mother and a father. Her mother is Techno and her Father is Rock. She also has an uncle on her father’s side. And while I don’t want to spoil too much, I will get this off my chest. Her uncle also had a hybrid child who’s a few years older than her👀
Tiny bit of backstory: I still haven’t worked out what causes her parents to meet, but when they did, they fell madly in love right away. And after discovering Cora’s egg, they got married and decided to raise her in secret. Think a much MUCH healthier version of Tangled. Like if Gothel really was trying to protect Rapunzel from the horror of the world.
Dear god, I’ve got way to much to say, but I’m too exhausted to look at the screen. So I’mma stop here for the night. If anyone is interested at all, let me know if you figure out who her cousin is

Quest Calendar 2024
Starsday 20 / Sunsday 21, Stormfall
And the members of the mob charge Cora!
This battle was a case of when the rolls went well, they were really good and when they didn’t, they were just shy of what was need to take down the attacker. All in all, Cora was able to defeat 2 of the 4 mobsters, and took 2 points of damage. She also earned only 2 amber for her efforts here.
The remaining mob members then threaten the life of the poor merchant if Cora doesn’t leave. Doesn’t look like she has a choice but to try to tackle this elsewhere.
Hero: Cora Wildclaw
HP: 21
Amber: 49
Virtue: 2

#20 and Cobert. I don't know if you're still doing this but thought I just send a prompt because I really love your fanfics^^
Thank you so much! I’ve been rewatching a bit of Downton lately, and I have this new little tiny thing of a headcanon. I won’t go much into it here because it’s an interesting little bud that I may want to water and let grow. Try this. I hope there’s something there that you like. It is very much a bit of a Cora + Violet scene. (Wish we had more!) *throws Drabble at you and runs*

# 20 Things You Said that I Wasn’t Meant to Hear
The thunder outside of the dining room made the usually large, gaping space between the four of them smaller - suffocatingly smaller.
They’d already mustered through six different topics of light conversation: Patrick’s plans for the upcoming hunting party, Mama’s visit with the vicar earlier that day, if anyone had heard anything of “poor old Mr. Granger” (whom Cora had never heard of at all), the delicious chicken they ate, Rosamund’s most recent letter, and the weather.
Cora felt as if it had all come full circle there — it began with small rumbles of the storm and the pittering of rain against the windows, and now it had ended with larger rumbles and gusts of wind.
For his part, Robert said very little. He had inquired about the hunting party and made an offhand remark about Rosamund being able to afford her own groceries, but beside that, had kept mum. Cora always kept mum on nights such as these. She felt she’d at last learnt her lesson, that her observations during light conversation between courses was not appreciated. After all, it was all for appearances’ sake.
Cora lifted her eyes from her dessert and looked at the people around her — her husband, her mother-in-law, her father-in-law — and she pushed out a breath of frustration through her nose.
She’d been married for six months. She had had countless dinners such as these: these odd, formal affairs of just the four of them, servants in every corner, never leaving the room. Of course they had had formally laid dinners in New York and Newport, but her Mother was never one for duplicity. She’d send the servants out, to be rung in by a bell when they were finished with their meal, and then she and her brother and mother and father would eat and eat well. They’d sometimes not speak at all. But here, appearances mattered. It was behind the closed door of the library where the facade fell away, and Cora felt a headache coming on.
“Now then, I think it may be time to let them get in here.” Violet stood, and as rules demanded, everyone stood and put their napkins down. Cora instinctively walked around Robert, following her mother-in-law into the library, but then turned, as Robert and his father did not follow her in as they usually did.
Cora looked at Violet. Her mother-in-law yawned as she sat on the red sofa and gazed into the fire, clearly not as interested in this breach of routine as Cora was. She could see, too, from her vantage that Robert and his father were just outside the door, as it was cracked open. But Cora was at a poor angle. She moved to make as if she was selecting a book, though the titles on the spines were next to impossible to read in the dim, flickering light. She could see now, however, through her slow but deliberate steps along the bookcase, that Robert stood just there, and Patrick had his arm about him.
There was another low rumble of thunder and Cora turned to look over her shoulder, at Mama. She still stared into the flames.
“...spoken with Murray today. He asked how I felt things were progressing.”
Patrick’s voice was too deep to whisper properly. The words carried through the remains of the growl of thunder and into their space. Robert’s words were more difficult to decipher. But her name — she very clearly heard her name from on tongue.
She stopped her browsing, and breathing, and stood, trying to hear better.
Robert again. “— I don’t need any lectures on the matter —“
The rain was much too loud.
“ — sure there is nothing amiss. If disharmony exists now, it does not —“
“Cora?” Violet called her. “Can’t you find anything?”
Cora turned back around to her mother-in-law and forced a smile. “No.” She opened her mouth, to add some sort of commentary, but failed. She closed it shut.
“Mmm,” her mother-in-law hummed quietly. “Perhaps it isn’t a night for reading, then.”
Cora turned her head back toward the door. Patrick was speaking again. She could hear the low timbre of his words. And then the lower roll of more thunder. Cora felt her mother-in-law’s attention trained upon her, and felt the awkwardness of the moment increase with every second that ticked forward. So she smiled a small, “You may be right,”walked to the red sofa, and sat.
Of course that wasn’t true. Every night seemed to be a night for reading as of late. Robert had nearly all but stopped coming into her bedroom since they had to share a room at Grantham House in late June. She wasn’t sure what she’d done. One night they had spent tangled in one another, the headiness of the London season and several glasses of champagne working to create a feigned sort of easiness between them. They’d kissed, and laughed, and Cora had quietly whispered how much she longed for him. And then the next night, she found herself alone, Robert sleeping in a separate bed that hadn’t existed before.
Another boom of thunder, and this time, the window panes shook slightly.
In the stillness that followed, Cora noticed a more deafening silence. She turned her head back toward the door, but apparently rather conspicuously, for Violet spoke.
“They’ve left.”
Cora felt her face grow hot, and she thought seriously of coming up with some story that would excuse her strange behavior. But she didn’t. For one, she was a terrible liar. And secondly, she understood that her mother-in-law knew better.
“There is something I need to say, and then we can have it done with.”
Cora was alarmed at this. She looked up at Violet, who was sitting straight, tall, her strawberry blonde hair a deeper red in the firelight. She looked imperial. “I’m only going to ask you one thing, and then we’ll leave things be.” Violet held up her hand, almost as if she was halting Cora’s next thoughts before they had time to manifest. “This is in no way meant to embarrass or insult you. If anything, it’s only meant to clear the air. After all, I believe I may already know the answer; but of course, validation is appreciated in situations such as these.”
Cora took a breath in. Her heart raced. “Yes?”
“Are you refusing to have Robert in your bed?”
“What?” The breath that Cora took in pushed out in a fierce response. She opened her mouth to speak again, but could not. Everything she wanted to say to defend herself turned her chest into hot patches of red, her neck feeling suddenly as if it had been burned, both from indignation and mortification. She must’ve made an unintelligible noise, for Violet had to speak over her.
“My dear ... my dear,” she quieted her. “There is no need to explain a thing.”
There was another rumble of thunder and glass trembling. Cora wanted to cry. She didn’t know how to leave, but she wanted to. She stood, she looked around her, and made to exit. She managed a strangled, “I’m going up” and forced herself to keep some semblance of composure as she moved as quickly as she could from the sofa.
But then, a gnawing, churning thought and Cora paused, abruptly, and turned, very slightly, to Violet. She kept her eyes on the mantle, for she daren’t look at her. She’d cry. She knew she’d cry.
“Did Robert say ... that is ... Was it Robert who ...”
Her voice trailed off. She hated the way she’d asked it. She hated the way her eyes now stung with tears. She hated that this was a conversation she was having with his mother of all people.
Mercifully, Violet didn’t let the silence linger long. “I can’t be sure who has spread such an unseemly and nasty rumor, and were you an ordinary girl who did not carry such a weight as the succession — not to mention the entail with it —, then it would be of little consequence.” Violet paused, and Cora suddenly felt an odd ache in her chest. She looked down at her mother-in-law’s feet. Another thunder rolled in the distance. “But no. It was not Robert.”
The rain outside made the room smaller, but the suffocation Cora had felt in the dining room did not exist here. Instead, the smallness now felt like shared understanding. Shared experience. And for the first time since she arrived, Cora felt as if her mother-in-law was speaking to her, and not simply at her.
Cora met Violet’s gaze. She nodded. “Thank you.”
Violet didn’t smile, in fact, she looked away from Cora, but she nodded in return as she stood and straightened her glove. Cora walked to the door, and just as her hand was at the knob, Violet’s voice gave her pause.
“If I could offer some advice....” Cora looked back at her. “It may do you both some good to remember that we aren’t the only eyes and ears beneath this roof.”

Disclaimer: If I don't really find inspiration or I don't really like the request I have the right to skip it. It may sound obnoxious, but believe me it's not. I really want to stay true to my own style and above all the fact that if I write something I really do it with my heart. I don't like to write something in a generic way just to fulfil a request. Thank u so much for understanding and please do not take it personally 💖

37 and 38 for the writer ask, if u don't mind 👀👀👀
I do not mind at all for you!
37. Would you ever collaborate with another writer for a story?
I haven't collaborated, as such, but wrote the second half of a story from a drabble that the writer had posted for others to expand/adopt.
The first half of that story is basically hers, and the second half is my writing. We were in touch about its development and the best way to post/credit it.
I think I prefer collaborating, or being inspired by artworks, etc. And three of my stories were inspired by @a-tsute 's art: screen / shiki-e (law, marco, chopper)
house / yorishiro (roronoa zoro)
A Constellation of Starfish (that's a Rosi fic, btw, but canon)
I'll be working for the opreversebang with @alegnace, and I'm really looking forward to it.
38. What story of yours are you surprised that people liked as much as they did?
Good question. I guess I was surprised that Bepo's Beptober was as popular as it was, or that it got quite a lot of feedback and interaction. Mostly because, while I think my funnier stories are funny, they don't get as much interaction as others.
I was also surprised when the endling and the terminarch, a lawbin, far outstripped an angsty Cora & Law that was published at the same time. Folks like canon compliant except when they don't. Haha. And maybe the lawbin shippers are hungry. I don't know, cos the fic receives a relatively healthy number of kudos and hits, but not many comments.
Also, a little surprised at the success (for me) of the LawZo, the sellout, considering ...
...my other LawZo did pretty well, but over three and a half years, and is definitely not at the top of the ZoLaw / LawZo fics out there measuring by stats.
Whereas the second/final chapter to the sellout was published in November, 2021, and kudos-wise it's surpassed the first fic, and will probably pass it in hits soon too. I didn't think I had the fandom touch for the pairing (although I really like either fic), so it surprised me.
Also, static before the storm, which was a ficlet written about Shakky for the womenwantedzine, did pretty well for a G-rated ficlet, but the actual story published in the zine, hits and kudos-wise, was less popular (nice comments though), and another Shakky piece I wrote also didn't receive the same level of interest. I really don't know what tags I used, or what about the first story made it more appealing than the other two (probably the Law tag, but that wasn’t reflected in the comments). I am grateful for all interaction though.
Thank you for the ask!
Questions 11, 15, 21, 35, 39, 40, 7, 8, 12, 17, 20, 18, 19, 26, 29, 37 and 39 all done.

Listing all of Regina Mills’s bad deeds - Attempt 2
So once I tried to list every single one of Regina’s villainous acts throughout the show. However it was pointed out to me that I missed a few. So I’m now going to have another attempt, and I will keep attempting until I have made a complete list without any failure.
So here we go in order of what happened chronologically first, not what was shown earlier in the show:
1. Murdered Rumple’s student who he pretended to replace her with
2. Tried to kill Snow
3. Tried to kill Emma and Marian when Emma came to the past
4. Tried to kill Snow via FIRE (that’s just sadistic, death by fire is hands down one of the worst ways to go!)
5. Incriminated Snow of many horrific crimes and made her a notorious outlaw across the land
6. Killed everyone in a village for liking Snow
7. Prevented Ariel and Eric being together and took Ariel’s voice
8. Sent multiple children to the Blind Witch and got them killed and eaten
9. Separated Hansel and Gretel from their father
10. Abducted, imprisoned, enslaved and controlled Graham by taking his heart and raped him seemingly multiple times
11. Imprisoned Belle in a single room for 28 years (ooo this one is bad *shivers*)
12. Abducted, imprisoned and tormented Charming by revealing her plans for Snow to eat the poisoned apple
13. Tried to put Snow under a lifelong nightmare (not a metaphorical nightmare, a literal life lasting bad dream, listen to what she says before trying to get Snow to eat the apple, that’s what it does, and I think this is a fate worse than death, and overall her second most evil act on the show because of that)
14. Choked a woman in a crowd Snow was talking to
15. Choked Grumpy in the second crowd Snow was talking to
16. Trapped her father in a box
17. Killed her horse
18. Turned a man to stone for laughing at her failed attempt to cast the Dark Curse
19. Killed her father
20. Cast the Dark Curse
21. Tried to kill Emma when she was a baby
22. Scared the Storybrooke residents into never running against her in elections (this is explained by Mary Margaret in a very early episode. Storybrooke is practically a dictatorship)
23. Endangered Archie and Pongo’s lives to test if Snow was awake or not in Storybrooke
24. Spied on Storybrooke residents (yeah this is some utopia man)
25. Tried to incriminate Owen’s father of drunk driving
26. Manipulated Sydney’s feelings for her to get him to do her dirty work
27. Tried to separate Owen and his father
28. Murdered Owen’s father
29. Tried to prevent Emma and Henry, a birth mother and son having a relationship
30. Gaslighted Henry and tried to make him think he was insane for knowing the truth going as far as getting him therapy appointments
31. Kept Snowing apart in Storybrooke, and presumably Kathryn and her husband too
32. Threatened Emma to leave Storybrooke
33. Forced the Storybrooke hotel to not accept Emma as a guest
34. Got Sydney to dig up dirt on Emma
35. Incriminated Emma of stealing Henry’s files from Archie
36. Murdered Graham
37. Tried to install a puppet as the sheriff of Storybrooke’s police department, breaking protocol to install the deputy in case of the sheriff’s passing
38. Tried to send Hansel and Gretel across the town line
39. Used her authority to shorten Mr Gold’s sentence for assault and battery, and assisted him in what she thought was an attempt on Kathryn’s life
40. Tried to incriminate Mary Margaret of Kathryn Nolan’s apparent murder
41. Set up Sydney to take the fall for Kathryn’s abduction
42. Tried to seduce David
43. Tried to make Emma eat the poisoned apple and put her under a lifelong literal nightmare (hands down the worst thing she did, a fate worse than death inflicted on the biological mother of her adoptive son...... no words for this evil)
44. Turned a man who wanted to kill Charming into a giant to help him do so
45. Helped Cora try and become the Dark One and kill Emma, Snow, Charming and Neal so she could have Henry to herself
46. Tried to kill Snow for daring to desperately prevent Cora taking her and her family’s lives by killing her in self defence
47. Tried to kill everyone in Storybrooke and take Henry to the Enchanted Forest to have him to herself
48. Tried to kill Marian again
49. Trapped Sydney in the mirror
50. Blamed Emma for saving Marian’s life (how dare you rescue the person I was trying to kill >:()
What I have chosen not to include and why:
1. Killing Leopold
I’m pretty torn on this one. She was trapped by Leopold in a life she didn’t want, trapped as his wife, as a queen. Leopold didn’t ask for her consent in marriage, he just accepted Cora’s approval as a yes. He also proposed to her upon first sight, always a red flag.
Then again in medieval times it could be argued that this is how society worked. Leopold wasn’t being malicious, just that’s what society had led him to believe is proper behavior. And maybe everyone else is doing it too. So is killing someone for doing something that anyone else would also do really acceptable?
2. Trapping Jefferson in Wonderland
While it was her own fault, her father was imprisoned in a box and that was the only way to free him. So I think having one person be freed at the cost of another person’s imprisonment is a kind of lose something and gain something of equal value kind of thing.

Session 1 10 Jul 2021
We start a little later than usual today as our illustrious DM has been working hard to provide a game from scratch for us this week!
We were asked to provide him with a name, race, sub-race, and a class if we wanted to. We were not asked to draw up character sheets or determine stats and so on, and it’s been driving us (all now at least somewhat seasoned D&D players) up the wall. Matthew hops on to the chat after Joe drops the link to the game, to ask us not to open our character sheets if we sign in early. Duncan tells us he has emphasised this casual torture by having not even read the rules for his class; he likes to live on the edge.
When we sign in, we are greeted with this calming landing page (we know it's calming, because Matthew tells us it is):
Ah. Well that’s alright then.
We are told this campaign could last ten minutes or the rest of our lives; Matthew is hoping for somewhere in the middle. We have some technical issues - as is to be expected. Roll20 is a steep learning curve. One might even call it a wall.
We’re told that this entire fiasco is based off a spoof tv show that Matthew saw late at night once and thought it would be fun to base a one-shot on. Then it got out of hand, and now has the potential to become a full campaign. Here's hoping! Without further ado, we dive in…
Cora (Ishara) stands beside a crossroads. There is a sundial at its centre; she sees the shadow pass over its face. An elven merchant passes, cart laden with water jugs. She waves, but her face is a picture of fury. The sundial's shadow disappears - it is midday. Another elven merchant passes, this one with a cart of food. She also waves, but she is in floods of tears. The sundial shows that dusk is approaching. A third elven merchant passes, with a cart full of empty glass jars. She laughs hysterically as she passes by, waving as she goes.
Night falls and the moon rises. A fourth merchant approaches, but this one does not wave. Her face is blank as she walks toward Cora - she drops a bunch of snapdragons at Cora's feet and continues walking. Cora picks the flowers up and admires them; half the bunch withers and dies, and the other half grows to twice its size. She drops them to the ground; as the new roots touch it, the earth collapses beneath her -
She awakens, to see Leslie:
He tells her he doesn’t know who she is, but she shouldn’t be sleeping here.
We all awake now, in what appears to be the ruins of a battlefield.
We are all zombies.
Huh.
We see each other as friends; in fact the word 'zombie' in Friend means 'friend'. We know this, because as it turns out, we all speak Friend.
But not Common. Hmm.
Leslie tells us his name and asks why we’re sleeping here?
We roll History checks to see if we remember anything; that will be hard for Marcus who has -3 INT.
Pilfer remembers his name, and something about a boat, and nothing else. No idea where he is or why, or who his new friends are. Ren knows that this is definitely his lute. He takes it. Will he remember how to play it?
Hilda remembers nothing about how she got here, but she remembers fighting in a war. A big one. It was important; significant to her. Marcus remembers little more than Ren. That’s definitely his rucksack, though. Milo knows something is missing but he can’t figure out what. Cora remembers her dream. There was a risk that she wouldn’t. She’s told it didn’t feel like her dream, even though she was dreaming it.
We heard voice from behind a wall saying, “Friends? Friends!” Leslie rolls his eyes.
Cora goes to the wall to see if she can lend aid to the owner of the voice. It is coming from very close to Hilda. Should she do something about it? Where are we?
Hilda rolls a nat 20 for her Perception check. (Fun new house rule: if we are using a skill or tool and roll a nat20, we gain Proficiency - ooo!)
It is carnage around us. A huge fight has happened here. Imagine the biggest battle from the LotR movies - what we see laid out before us makes that look like a boundary dispute between neighbours.
Does Ren feel peckish when he looks at the bodies? It looks like food, but food has this habit of moving around; once it stops doing that, it’s bad food. We are all aware of this; what we're looking at is No Longer Food.
There are old fires and signs of burns on the ground. Amongst all this we hear the bewildered, friendly voice again asking for help. It’s coming from the remains of a building that has been destroyed by fire or magic or something of that ilk.
Hilda goes to investigate, and Pilfer goes to look as well. It turns out Matthew meant to put us on a different map, but we have been looking at the crossroads this whole time. Whoops! We switch to the map. Technical issues, please stand by…
(Matthew, direct quote: “JOE! Make it better, help!”
Joe helps, and makes it better. We continue… )
Ren has a go at tuning his lute. He makes a Performance check. an 8! We are all suitably distracted.
The voice calls again. “Friends?”
Where is this voice, and whose is it?
Leslie introduces himself again, rather pointedly probably, and we all introduce ourselves this time. Leslie seems particularly enamoured by Milo. The voice asks us what are we going to call him?
Pilfer suggests Bingo; Bingo likes that so that’s his name now. Pilfer asks how long he’s been here? He heard us get up and before that it was dark, but before that it was quite bright. Before that it was dark, and before that it was bright. Before that there was a lot of angry people, and there was a lot of food, and now the food’s all gone. He tried to leave, but he couldn’t.
Pilfer - formerly a drow elf - is dismayed to discover that it is daytime. He panics until he finds his parasol.
Ren gets a nat20 - he now has proficiency in Investigation! (There is a limit to the number of these bonuses we can receive, we are warned.) He and Marcus and Hilda all see Bingo's problem. Pilfer, however, has got lost in Bingo’s eyes again. He’s a good looking fella.
“Would that we had met before the rot set in!”
Milo gets distracted when some food shouts at him from over the bridge - it then pegs it away. Milo wants to follow, but we are all Slow (-10feet). The food disappears into the trees. He is disappointed, and hungry. He sits on a bit of broken bridge and sulks; Leslie joins him. He offers to help him look for some more food.
Bingo is pinned in place with a spear through his sternum - he’s upright, and the spear is piercing him from above. Can we pull it out? Or him out? Marcus has a go at pulling him by the hands - and manages to get Bingo off the spear with a 19 STR check. Bingo is very pleased. Ren asks if he wants the spear back; Bingo says it’s not his. Ren takes it instead, and adds it to his inventory. He has two now.
Bingo says he’s going to find the horde.
Us, politely confused: "The what?"
The horde! It’s the best! We should totally join him.
Leslie pats Milo on the back and tells him not to be disheartened. We’ll find some food. We suspend our disbelief while Matthew puts some food on the map that we didn’t notice sneaking up on us…
Ren rolls another nat20, getting proficiency with Perception. Thanks to Milo’s alertness, the food doesn’t get the drop on him either. Pilfer’s stomach rumbles, and we roll initiative. (Marcus gets five XP for helping Bingo off the spear!)
Noticing that we appear to have noticed them, the food closest to us appears to be carrying a stick. Uh oh… Food uses tools, this is the thing we learn first. The first food seems reluctant to move towards us, so it holds an action.
Cora is up first. She shambles 20 feet, and uses her action to dash twenty more feet and gets right up to some food and zombie-groans in its ear.
Milo remembers different food, food that you have to sneak up on, so he has a go at that. He rolls a Bad stealth check, and uses all fifteen of his feet, loudly announcing what he is doing to Leslie as he goes.
A food bonks Cora on the head with a stick for 15 to hit, which does, for 2 bludgeoning damage. Another food advances towards us - he’s wobbling his arm and pointing to the food that bonked Cora on the head.
Marcus shamble-dashes toward Cora, upsetting the food that she’s in melee with. Another food tries to hit him, but misses. Marcus consoles it.
Pilfer moves forward. Can he throw a dagger? Yes he can. He hucks his knife at a food. 21 to hit! Right in the shanks. 3 piercing damage! He did not get the food in the shanks; he got it in the neck.
He feels a weird urge to snack. All the other foods look very unnerved at this development. The food isn’t quite dead, but clutching its neck with blood pouring through its fingers and making an agonized squealing noise.
Pilfer: “... Is he okay?”
Hilda waddles up to another food, the one that lurched forward at us. She gives it a smash with her greatclub for 13 to hit.
Matthew kicks himself out of the game. We won!
Moving on…
Hilda’s attack hits, for 9 bludgeoning damage. She destroys the food. Can she still eat it? As a bonus action she eats some of the food, before it spoils. (Matthew moves the token to get it out of the way. Hilda, aggrieved: “I was eating that!”)
Ren’s turn. He swings the lute around, remembering that a lute is a useful thing to have; he can’t remember what to do with it so he swings it back out of the way and gets his spear instead. He stabs at the food in front of him. He spears it successfully and goes to town before it spoils. “Yum yum.” He says grace, which sounds like a beautiful prayer to us, and like hideous gurgling to the food.
Another food rushes at Hilda, seeing the thing she just done. It natty 20s her, but the damage is only 4.
Cora swings her mace at the food in front of her, to get to the juicy filling. 11 to hit, which does, and 3 bludgeoning damage. She’s tenderised it good; that’ll melt in the mouth, that will. Fall right off the bone.
Milo has heard all this going on; he goes back up and throws a javelin at the food attacking Hilda. He crit-fails. Whoops! He gears up and swings, and throws the javelin in completely the wrong direction. He looks at Leslie, who shrugs.
"I'd have thrown that over there, if I were you."
Leslie moves up, and old Bingo’s gonna get in the game as well. (Matthew forgot to roll initiative for them on the first round. He puts them in the turn order; better odds for us, yeah!)
Cora’s food tries to hit her again, but misses. There must be delicious sauce in its eyes.
Marcus batters the food in front of him with a slam attack, not realising there’s a quarterstaff on his back that he could use. He hits and kills the food, and goes to town. It turns out that that was Pilfer’s food; he retrieves his dagger and stops for a little nibble. A fistful of the insidey-bits is a great snack-on-the-go. He has enough movement to flank another food, so he does that, and makes a slam attack against it. He has prepared another meal!
Hilda’s turn, and the meals around her are in full swing; she uses both her action and her bonus action to snack on two different foods.
(Ed, OOC: “Is it bad that this game is making me hungry?”)
Ren too decides to feast on the 'horrible visceral tapas' that surrounds him. (We are adjusting swiftly to our new circumstance.)
Cora has another go at the pudding with a slam attack, hits the wrong button, finds the right one, and hits that for 13 damage which makes contact. 8 bludgeoning! She has prepared the heck out of that meal by swinging at the head and taking it clean off.
We are out of initiative! Pilfer waves a bit of meat at Bingo and invites him to join us. Milo seasons his own meal with the spices in his bag and even washes his hands, remembering that that’s important to do before eating. Pilfer empties his waterskin and fills it with blood. If he shakes it every now and again it’ll be fine.
It turns out that our meal doesn’t seem appetising for very long, and we quickly realise that our food has spoiled.
We roll Perception checks, at Disadvantage because we’re eating. Leslie doesn’t seem interested in the food.
Pilfer asks him what’s up, why isn’t he chowing down with the rest of us? He’s eating his own meal, he hints. Ren would love to Investigate Leslie. There seem to be bits of plant coming out of wounds or open sores on his body; he catches Ren looking and explains that although he’s a Friend, he eats it a bit differently. Over a period of time. We aren’t really talking to the person-suit, we’re talking to the plant inside the body. He uses the food to get around a bit more easily. And he can eat it even though it’s gone grey. The word he uses is 'compost'.
But, he assures us, we are all Friends here.
Fair dos. So, to the horde then?
Bingo looks really excited at this. Do we know where the horde is, he asks us?
"... We don’t even know what the horde is."
If we want to know who and what we are, Leslie might know someone who knows someone…?
There is a gnawing in the back of our heads (not worms); maybe we might want to know more about ourselves than just our names. (Which - it's odd that we even know our names. That's certainly more than Bingo knew.) Hilda thinks we might not want to know; we might upset ourselves.
We can follow Bingo to the horde. Or we could go with Leslie and take Bingo with us, and do horde stuff later? We’re full now, and all the food has gone bad, so we may as well follow Leslie. We get 15 XP for eating all that food.
We walk through the battlefield and the heaps of spoiled food. Occasionally we hear shouting in the distance:
Random friend: “Friend? Friend!”
Bingo, shouting back: “I’m called Bingo!”
New Bingo: “Oh, wow! Can I be called Bingo?”
Bingo Prime: “Sure!”
(Ed returns from the kitchen with snacks, very confused to arrive back in the middle of this.)
We shuffle along with Leslie. There are a lot of Bingos about, after a while. It starts to get dark. Ren remembers he has a tail. Leslie turns to us and says he once inhabited a food with a tail. It wasn’t a grippy one, but it was quite furry. He doesn’t know what you’d call it, but it was quite entertaining to see the looks on the other foods' faces.
Leslie doesn’t like to travel overnight, so we sit down in a little sitting around circle. His eyes aren’t good in the dark. Do we feel tired…? We don’t need to sleep, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t. Every so often we hear the little Bingo exchange in the distance. (We’re going to regret this.)
We roll INT checks at Disadvantage - Marcus rolls a 16. Maybe it’s a faded memory, but he is pretty certain he remembers going to sleep in a similar situation, and one person stayed awake. He suggests to the others that one of us should stay awake; most of them don't seem to follow his train of thought. He remains awake and so does Milo; Ren paces in circles until he gets bored.
Those of the group that try to sleep, give it a go. They don’t dream exactly. Those that stay awake still get the benefits of a long rest. Yay!
(We break for tea and cigarettes and whatnot.)
Bingo lies down, seeing some of us do that, and asks what we’re doing. Those of us that stay awake roll Perception checks.
While Matthew’s computer reboots, he tells Cora about her dream.
She stands in a familiar room; the bookshelves around her are laden with ancient texts. She notices that there is no door. She starts to feel anxious. Music sounds, from a hearth that wasn't there a moment ago. There is a music box open on the stone floor. She kneels down and closes the lid, and finds herself standing in a field. Her anxiety fades to contentment as she stands in the short, but lush, green grass. About a hundred feet away, a large black stag with eyes of fire begins to charge her. She begins to float, and the stag passes harmlessly beneath her. She flies over the treetops. Behind her she sees a triangle of ravens flying in her wake. She lands, surrounded by friends and safe, and the ravens continue on.
Marcus and Milo stayed awake; Marcus was distracted, wondering what the twinkly in the sky lights do and if anyone will ever walk on the surface of one, that kind of thing. Milo sees figures that appear to be advancing towards us. Uh oh!
Is it friends or food? Milo thinks it’s almost definitely food. It did not introduce itself as Bingo. Milo alerts us all that our delivery has arrived, and we roll initiative.
Cora goes first. She nobbles one with her mace and a nat 20 for 7 bludgeoning damage. She sees some sauce come out.
Marcus Slams another one; he makes a dent in it. (He still hasn’t realised he has a quarterstaff.)
A guard attacks Hilda with a spear. Hilda, sounding mildly inconvenienced: “Nooo!” 13 hits. Things are getting a little more real. She takes 6 piercing damage and is quite poorly.
Milo wants to know if this food is human sized; it is. He shambles into one and does a slam at it, and has a go at chomping off a couple of crunchy fingers. 18 hits. Milo, extremely pleased: “Delicious!” 8 chomping damage, and he comes away with some delicious bits of food. If this guy was planning on using his spear two handed, he may have to re-think his strategy.
Leslie’s turn. He makes it quite a way out to his chosen food, but his attack misses. The food next to Cora has a go at clobbering her with a 9 - which misses.
Pilfer’s turn, and he zips down toward another food to whale on it. He rolls a dirty 20 and slams him good, also doing max damage.
Hilda's turn! 15 with her club just misses, and she’s very annoyed about it. As a bonus action she wants to still try and have a chomp, but nothing happens.
The food fighting with Marcus fails to hit him, as does the one with Leslie. Milo’s food natty 20s him for 13 damage, and he’s down. Oh no! He rolls a good CON save and pops back with 1 HP.
Another food attacks Bingo and another attacks Pilfer but misses. Ren shambles across to help our good friend Bingo by poking the food with his spear, hitting for 4.
Bingo does a slam on the food as well, but misses. Marcus misses his attack; he is marinading it in its sauce, he says. Squeezing it like a mango to check for ripeness.
Cora rolls an 18 with her mace, and 3 bludgeoning. The food looks nearly ready. She falls upon it and has a chew. (Matthew: “Gross. I like it.”)
15 hits Marcus for 7 spikin’ in the tummy. No worries; he's got four more spikin' in the tummy left. Milo’s next slam hits, doing 6 points of munching damage, eating it to the point of perfection. It runs around screaming with a little halfling zombi- friend, attached to it first; Milo sets about feasting when it lies down and stops moving.
Leslie does an attack, and prepares another meal as Matthew plays D&D by himself. Pilfer has another attack - a 15 just misses. “Curse you!”
Hilda has another go with her great club for a 17, and 10 bludgeoning damage. Her food went from raw to almost perfect in one hit. It’s still moving about a bit, but in a much more ‘ready to be food’ fashion.
Ren’s food swings at him and misses. Ren, put out: “The food's just playing with me. It's supposed to be the other way around, right?”
Pilfer’s food fumbles at him and hits, and he’s none too pleased about it. He takes two HP damage when his food pokes him. “How dare it! I’m getting pre-eating indigestion, somehow.”
Ren does another poke with his spear. “Stop moving around! It makes it harder to bite you!” Six misses, unfortunately.
Hilda’s food attacks her for 14, which hits for 5 damage and she’s down. She rolls a CON save, but fails. She is at 0HP. She will be rolling undeath saves, oh no!
Bingo slams his food and misses. Marcus prepares his food with a crunch, and begins chomping.
Cora would like to kneecap her food so it can’t escape. The kneecaps are one of the best bits. 7 damage to the food (not Marcus!) and begins to chomp as well.
Milo’s meal is going down a treat, but he notices that Hilda appears to be lying down even though her food is standing up. Is her food trying to eat her? He’s not having this; Friends are not Food! He slings his javelin at Hilda’s food. The javelin hits, and he gives it a good dressing down. “Rude!”
We don’t understand it, but the remaining food is very distressed. If we could understand the food, we'd hear it saying, “Oh my God, they’re using tools!”
Leslie dashes at full pelt, but doesn’t get far. He looks puffed out; or he would if there was breath in his body.
Pilfer slams his food for a nat20. “YES! YES! What’s that mean, do I roll damage twice? Yes! YES! Look at all that damage. Yes! I bludgeon him to the floor, I eat him.”
Hilda rolls an undeath save: a 17, yay!
The last guard takes his turn. Looking around him he realises he’s in trouble, so he legs it. Wait - Ren is still struggling with a live one, and the guard isn’t going to abandon his mate. He runs up to Ren and gives him a bit of a poke - 12 just hits him. He takes 4 points of being stabbed. However -
It is now his turn. The food that he’s stabbed looks closer to edible than the newly arrived food. He stirs his spear around in it for 23, and 6 piercing damage. His food is well prepped and looking delicious.
Bingo hasn’t had much luck prying open the last one, so he has a go at Ren’s new arrival but misses. It’s been a long day.
While Marcus is shovelling stuff into his mouth, he notices that Hilda is down. Upon seeing her, his rotting brain supplies “…food?” But he remembers that’s not right. He shuffles over and pokes her with a Medicine check of 9; he can’t figure out why she’s lying down. Yelling “Get up!” doesn’t seem to do anything.
Cora shambles over to the two of them with a handful of brain pudding, and attempts to feed it to Hilda. She rolls a Medicine check - another 9. On the plus side, it’s not like she can choke her to death.
Milo has just eaten a whole hand, so he comes over for a poke at Hilda as well. He snaps off a finger from his food and tries to poke it into her mouth. It works! He’s very pleased. This feels familiar to him.
Leslie pats still-unconscious Hilda on the head. In broad Gloucestershire accent: “There there.”
Pilfer proceeds to his second course. A dirty 20 for 6 bludgeoning, hitting it so hard on the top of the head that its neck disappears into its chest. The guard returns in kind - 9 to hit, which misses.
the guard looks worried as he looks around. “… Fuck.” We, of course, do not understand him.
Ren gets confused and tries to stab his food with his lute, but misses. Bingo misses again. It’s a wonder he’s survived this long.
Marcus natty 20s the last food, for 11 HP. "That's as many hit points as I have on a good day!"
DM: "That's as many hit points as he started with."
While we wait for Hilda to wake up, we can search for loot! Or lute! Who knows!
We leave it there, and Matthew will tell us what treasures we find on our respective food. Pilfer makes a prawn cocktail with gizzards.

Chapter 20 of Looking for a Place to Call Home
This has been on AO3 for forever, but I’m starting to push to finish this story. Look for chapter 21, coming soon!
~ * ~
Boyd and John sit at the table long after the dishes have been cleared away. They’re making plans to go to New York, to see if they can find Laura’s daughter.
Laura wants to go too. Derek’s not sure they’d be able to stop her. An alpha on a mission is hard to deter.
He doesn’t feel healthy enough to accompany them—too many hunger pains among other pains.
“It’s decided, then,” John declares suddenly. “I’ll book the tickets. We leave in two days—plenty of time for me to practice my aim. I used to be the best shot on the force.”
“Are you going to be allowed to travel with a firearm?” Boyd asks.
“Disassembled and in different or locked cases, yes, as long as I declare it. You know, there’s a competition out in New York. I might just be registered for it.”
“How many of us are going?” Erica asks. She looks at Laura, Cora next to her, both of them staring at John and Boyd, and then at Derek, hiding behind his sisters.
“John, me, and Laura,” Boyd says. “I’m sorry, Cora, Derek, but I think it’d be better if you stayed behind. Erica?”
“I’ll stay. Someone has to look out for them.”
“Perfect. I’ll get those tickets booked tonight.” John’s smile is broad, happy. Derek wants to warn him about the hunters and what they do to people who oppose them, but he remembers that John was their emissary before his parents were killed. He should know about hunters already.
“Will you be mad that I won’t go?” Derek asks Laura.
She hugs him. “No, I’m not mad. I’d rather you stay here, where it’s safe.”
“I can fight,” Cora interrupts. “Why can’t I go?”
“Because we barely got out last time. In fact, we weren’t even free until that deputy shot Kate.”
“But you’re going back. I want to go back too!”
“No.” Laura doesn’t shout, but her eyes go red, and Cora cowers down, eyes on the ground, neck bared.
Laura lets the red fade away. “I’m sorry, Cora. I don’t want to lose you if the hunters are swarming. I’m not even sure we’ll be able to find my daughter.”
“We’ll do our damndest,” John promises. He yawns, making Erica yawn too. “I need to get back home now.” He picks up his bag, heading for the door. “I’ll be back bright and early tomorrow so that you can tell us about where you were held. How to get in and out.”
“Good night, John.” Erica closes the door on him. She claps her hands, turning to the rest of them. “Early to bed tonight. That way we can be up early.” She shoos Boyd toward the kitchen. “Dishes, honey. The rest of you, teeth.”
There’s only one bathroom and it’s crowded. Cora and Laura keep bumping each other while Derek and Isaac stand back, brushing their teeth in sync.
Next to Isaac, watching his sisters roughhouse reminds Derek strongly of his family when his cousins visited.
He can’t remember if they all were there that day when Kate took him. He should, but he can’t.
“Hey,” he says, spraying toothpaste everywhere. “What happened to our cousins and aunts and uncles?”
“They died,” Laura says sharply. She glares at Derek in the mirror before throwing her now broken toothbrush away. “They came to help us look for you and then our house was burned down, all of us trapped inside.” She stomps away, anger swelling in her wake.
Derek rinses his mouth and brush, setting the brush in a cup labeled with his name. Cora and Isaac finish quickly, too, and Derek grabs Cora’s arm before she can escape to the room she’s sharing with Laura.
“I didn’t know,” he says. “I’m sorry.”
“We told you, didn’t we?”
“If you did, I don’t remember. Sorry.” He thinks he should have known, but Kate had broken his bonds, and when they’d left California, he hadn’t been able to sense his family.
Derek curls up on his bed, wondering when he’s going to feel normal. When he’s going to find his even keel, as his Aunt Miriam liked to say. He’d thought the whole time he was in New York that he was going to escape or be rescued and then come back to California to live with his family. He’d thought the bonds were muted with magic, not snapped entirely.
He hasn’t even properly mourned the loss of his family, too bust trying to heal from the damage Kate inflicted.
He covers his face and whines high in his throat. Isaac sinks down onto the bed with him, stroking a hand down his arm. He doesn’t say anything while Derek cries.
Nearly an hour passes before Derek stops sobbing. He breathes harshly through his mouth, nose too clogged to be of use.
“Do you want some water?” Isaac asks. Derek nods, and Isaac goes to the bathroom to fill a cup from the tap.
Derek sits up to drink it, and Isaac watches him with a curious look on his face.
“What?” Derek asks when he’s finished the water and set the cup, the one his brush was in earlier, on the bedside table.
“What’s it like being a werewolf?”
Derek pauses, thinking about it. Before Kate, he would have talked about his enhanced senses, the way they can heal minor wounds in seconds and major ones in hours or days, the way pack became attuned to each other, all of them striving to help each other. Now, he doesn’t know what to say. Does he tell Isaac that the hunters aren’t worth the trouble of being stronger, faster, or more resilient than a human?
He opens his mouth to ask Isaac what he means, but Isaac beats him to it, saying, “I guess what I mean is, I might like to become a werewolf someday.”
Derek looks at him curiously. “How do you know that we can turn you into a werewolf?”
Isaac shrugs. “Can you?”
“I can’t. I’m just a beta.”
“What about Laura? You defer to her, so she’s in charge?”
“Yes. She’s the alpha. Only an alpha’s bite can turn others, but,” Derek lifts a finger, “there’s a chance that the bite might not take. When that happens, the bitten dies.”
“How do you know if the bite will take?”
“Before giving the bite?” Isaac nods. “I don’t know.”
~ * ~
Stiles brews a fresh pot of coffee while he is on gold with the National Registry of Missing Persons. It’s late, he’s tired, and he still doesn’t know whose body they pulled out of the preserve.
He’s waiting on the okay to talk to Peter Hale, but his lawyer, none other than the famous defense attorney, David Whittemore, is dragging his feet. Possibly because Stiles interrupted his dinner with his visiting son.
Stiles doesn’t care. Jackson Whittemore, real estate mogul, is as unimportant to Stiles now as he was in high school when he was head jock and dating the most popular girl in school until she dumped him for her best friend. Jackson never quite recovered after Lydia’s public breakup, and he’d seemed to blame Scott and Stiles for his misfortune.
God damn, high school never ends, Stiles thinks bitterly.
“Still there, sir?” the NRMP employee asks, and Stiles confirms he is. “Okay, so there’s too many results to go through tonight, so I’ll have to give you an update in maybe a week. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help.”
“No, it’s okay. It was a long shot anyway. Thanks.” Stiles hangs up and tries to ignore the welling frustration. Getting angry won’t help anyone. He sinks into a chair, running both hands through his hair and down his face. “Crap,” he says. “What’s next?”
The man’s face is going on a bulletin tonight to run on the early news tomorrow morning to see if anyone recognizes him. His DNA and fingerprints are with the proper departments, but that could take months. Dental has also been sent out, but unless he was local, within a one hundred mile radius, they won’t have an answer back for weeks or months.
All of this can be narrowed down if Stiles can just find who they’re looking for.
He lets his head drop to the table, staring cross-eyed at the grain of the wood.
He is so exhausted, and they’ve only been on this case for two or three days. God, what if it drags on for days.
The coffee machine beeps, and Stiles hauls himself to it to grab a mug. He pours enough milk in it to cool it down, and then drains it in one long swallow.
At this point, coffee is useless. Stiles needs sleep. But before that, a shower. He’s feeling a little ripe right now.
All deputies keep a change of clothes here in case of emergency, and Stiles grabs his on the way to the showers in the basement.
The hot water helps him relax, and he spends a few minutes just letting it soak him.
He thinks again of the man stick on the tree. What if Peter isn’t the only Hale who knows who he is?
Stiles shuts off the water and dries off quickly. Derek spent three years in New York under Kate Argent’s thumb. Laura and Cora were with a different faction. The man obviously had some connection to them all since Peter had killed.
Stiles silences the tiny voice of doubt about Peter’s guilt. The man would have been partially eaten if it were a wild animal, and he wouldn’t have been skewered onto the branch as if a large creature had lifted him and set him there.
Stiles decides he needs to talk to the Hale kids tomorrow. For now, he’s going to go over the Hale fire papers and research every name that ever ended up being associated with it. Sleep is the last thing on his mind even though it’s his body’s only thought.
He runs into Kincaid and Ramirez on his way to the evidence room.
“Acting Sheriff Parish said we were to escort you home,” Kincaid explains, Like Stiles gives a rat’s ass.
He pauses thinking. Six eyes is better than two. “I’ll go home,” he says, “if you help me with something first.”
The rookies exchange an apprehensive look. Stiles takes mercy on them. “I’m working on identifying the body we found out in the preserve. I’ve got an idea that he had something to do with the house fire out that way three years ago.”
“Why do you think that, sir?” Ramirez asks.
Stiles shrugs. “It’s too much of a coincidence. The body was located near the house.”
“So you think this guy set it or something?”
“I don’t know yet. I don’t even know his name.”
“But you think it’s in the file on the fire.” Ramirez and Kincaid exchange another look, far less apprehensive this time. They shrug in unison.
“We’re in,” Ramirez says. “I’m guessing you just want lists of names with how they relate to the fire?”
“You guess correctly.”
