it's really wild that they still use so much wood for homebuilding in the USA. Is it a cartel thing? I can't imagine why you'd want to use a material that is so variable and flammable for home construction. Like yeah sure it's great in the pre-industrial era but now you can excavate and process gravel and cement and clay and iron and aluminium.
Wood isn't exactly cheap! Supply is variable and very sensitive to all sorts of weird things and it simply cannot correct very quickly. Steel is taken out of the ground and we make huge amounts of it, it's much more stable.
Maybe the amount of wood isn't that high? A fair amount of a house is gypsum board which you do actually dig out of the ground.
Still, I'm surprised that steel studs haven't completely outcompeted wood. Does it require more work to assemble? It might just be an industry momentum thing, you'd have to find builders who know how to work with metal framing, which presumably isn't a lot of people. You jump straight from wood framing and drywall to curtain walls on steel skyscraper frames.
There were some Construction Physics articles on this that I missed because I was busy hang on.
This article shows that the material and labour cost of framing are both the largest single costs within their own class, at 8% and 11% of the total cost of a home respectively, so it is expensive, and presumably that makes your homebuilding very sensitive to price spikes in wood.
This is from the last wood pricing spike and yeah, wood pricing can seriously affect the overall cost of a house, but it's also shockingly stable for a while there for being, you know, wood.
But yeah it feels like it's a significant fire hazard. It's not bulk lumber that can char without burning, it's all 2x4's and framing beams.
None of what I say is meaningfully correct.

Cars are just not very economic
Tumblr media
I just had this discussion with someone and I just kinda feel the need to talk about it here, because it is closely related to the entire Solarpunk thing.
If you look at it from a purely economic point of view, cars are just not a very efficient way of transport.
Now, this argument has been made to death, really. And literally economists have been arguing about this for literal decades. Again, I was discussing it and looked up sources - and I found sources going back to the 70s. So, yeah, this has been discussed for at least half a century.
But... yeah. Speaking from an economic point of view rails are most economic, followed by busses. Only then there is the cars. (No data on water transport and air transport is a bit more complicated from this point of view.)
Now, why is this?
Roads are all in all more expensive than rails, especially in maintenance. If you look into construction costs, you will find kinda contradictory information on this. But per kilometer costs a kilometer of rail is about equivalent to a kilometer of a four-lane highway to construct. But while both need maintenance, usually roads need more of it. Because the wear and tear on a road is harsher than on a rail (due to more friction and just the fact that concrete is just not a very durable material compared to metal). Admittedly: High speed rail does push both construction and maintanance costs for railways up a good notch, making it more comparable to a seven lane highway. Mostly because of safety concerns.
While trains are more expensive than cars, they usually will be longer in use than a car and will drive many more kilometers during this time. Part of this is also, of course, that while trains are in use for hours each day, most cars spend the most of their life just standing in garages and parking lots. While the average car will get retired after about 150 000 to 200 000 miles, the average locomotive will last 1 000 000 miles.
This comes even more into focus, when you take into consideration how many more passangers or haul the average car will transport during those 1m miles. A single train car can carry up to 150 passangers - and often during rush hours trains will carry about 800 to 1000 passengers at once. While a car will carry often only one or two people at once.
Additionally obviously car infrastructure takes up much more space. Even if we are talking about countries with not as crazy "minimum parking area" restrictions as the USA. Cars need a lot more space than a train or even bus would ever need. And this space also carries costs with it.
And in the end we obviously still do have all the kind of costs that comes from the environmental and health impact of cars. Be it the air pollution, the water polution, and the fallout from having those concrete deserts the cars need in their infrastructure. And to this you can STILL add costs from everything having to deal with accidents and the like.
But yeah... Cars are just economically not very efficient.
So, even if you just cared about the fucking money... Investing in trains and public transport is actually a way better use of that money, than investing in cars.

Bus Pass: Fancypants Platypus
Tumblr media
Name: Fancypants Platypus (formerly Francis Platypus)
Age: 36 at the time of the series
Residence: California, USA
Origin: New York, USA
Occupation: Fashion designer and later social media influencer
Orientation: Gay (like really, really gay)
Significant other(s): No significant ones but many flings
Fancypants Platypus is the third eldest son of the Platypus family. He’s catty, condescending, and self-centered. Like his other siblings, he was brought up in wealth, is a former Bean Scout and bullied Edward, the youngest, mercilessly. He’s a bigshot in the clothing design world, and his new status as a social media influencer has made him a household name. The latter, ironically, has humbled him somewhat and he has since become the only son to make peace with little Edward.
Biography: Canon and Headcanon
Francis Platypus was the third son born to Tony and Susan Platypus. From a very young age he had a keen eye for art, colors, and making himself favored. Tony, who owned and ran a very profitable construction company, had hoped this meant the newest boy would mature into an architect beneath him, but it wasn’t to be. This disappointment (that Tony and only Tony set himself up for, but he’ll never admit it,) would be the first bit of bad blood between them, but it simmered beneath the surface for decades.
For quite some time, Francis was the youngest child, after Chas (aka Cheesley) and Alfredo (aka Alpine.) Francis was the subject of bullying himself from them for his effeminate nature and comparable physical weakness. They took to calling him “Sissy” and “Nance,” and the minute he turned eighteen he spitefully changed his name to “Fancypants Platypus,” by which time he had fully embraced his queerness and was apprenticing in clothing design. They thus couldn’t mock him as they had without complimenting what was shaping up to be a meteoric rise in wealth and stardom of his own. (That’s not to say Tony respected Fancypants becoming self-made and openly gay. Far from it.) When Philip was born, the tradition of the youngest brother being the family punching bag seemed to pass, which made Fancypants secretly very angry at the unequal treatment.
But before that, the Platypus brothers went to Camp Kidney on the other side of the country, in Prickly Pines, California. Tony had gone to camp there himself as a boy, and he got a kick out of sending his materially spoiled boys “to that fucking dump” for a few summers. Only the three eldest boys went at the same time, for Philip and later Edward were too far apart in age. Although Philip went alone, the Platypus brothers’ reputation followed him, and no one messed with him. (Edward wasn’t so privileged with this association when his turn came.)
At camp, Francis was, individually, helpless. He couldn’t make fire, he flinched at the ball during sports, and he found the uniforms drab. He had no option then but to tag along with his brothers for support. For one reason or another, Cheesly and Alpine suddenly forgot to bully Francis and instead made him their rookie when it came to causing grief for other campers. Under their tutelage, Francis gave plenty of wedgies, threw many uniforms into rivers, and even beat up a few campers whom Cheesly and Alpine held down for him. He regards this as the low point of his life.
Five years after Philip came Edward, and at once the tradition of bullying the youngest brother came alive again. Intoxicated by being able to belittle others with his brothers’ help, Francis (and when the name change happened, Fancypants,) partook gleefully. They called Edward every name in the book. They slapped him awake with hands full of shaving cream. Every time he tried to make friends, they found some way to turn them away. And there was, of course, “tetherball.” Tony encouraged all of it, hoping it’d made Edward fight back (and somehow make him a construction company heir, it’s all he thinks of, yeesh.) Susan stayed on the sidelines as much as she disliked what the boys were doing, if only to not get sucked into conflict with Tony.
Edward, doted on as much as he was with gifts and money, was still totally alone and very tired of the whole world. By some act of God, the other brothers never found out about his Veronica doll. Fancypants only found out years later once they made peace, and even then kept it dark from the others considering he had written them off anyway.
From age 18 and on, Fancypants was unstoppable. He worked his way to the very top of the Design Department at the clothing company he worked, becoming its chief by age 30. He had pots of money he had made without his family’s help, was well-liked, and was openly gay. Tony and the other brothers were starting to lose patience with him. He was carving his own path in a way the other brothers, (Cheesly the owner of a chain of gyms, Alpine an NBA all-star,) hadn’t: without fawning over his father and his company in public. This was considered disrespect, and Fancypants rightly refused to stop being his own person. It wasn’t long after the events of “Edward’s Brothers” that Fancypants did indeed break away from the family. They may have hoped that going back to camp to pick on Edward “like old times” would help, but it didn’t.
Fancypants once again was the family black sheep, and he didn’t mind a bit. He even marketed a line of “Black Sheep Woolen Turtlenecks.” That’s just the kind of petty he is. In this new, low-attention span digital age, Fancypants found another avenue for money and fame: social media influencing. He uploaded videos of himself designing, comparing various clothing brands to his own, makeup tutorials, etc., and had millions of followers virtually overnight.
This also exposed him to much online nastiness, and it struck a chord with him. (A very late wakeup call to be sure, but whatever.) He “found” Edward online, and discovered he was out and gay too. At once, Fancypants realized what a jackass he had been, and immediately he set out to find his little brother and make amends if possible. Edward accepted, after first letting Fancypants grovel a bit, and after a bit of awkwardness they’ve since become very tight.
They bond over tea parties, talking smack about their brothers, other people and their fashion choices, having sleepovers and playing tennis on Fancypants’ own personal court at his mansion, and even play dolls together.
Edward’s favorite way to tease Fancypants is to call him a “queer elder.”

The Evolution of Construction Manufacturing and U.S. Material Trends
The construction sector in the United States is rapidly evolving, driven by advances in materials, techniques, and the rise of sustainable practices. As urbanization and population growth increase demand for durable infrastructure, the Construction Manufacturing Industry plays a pivotal role in meeting these needs. Through innovative manufacturing and the strategic use of quality materials, this industry contributes to developing strong, long-lasting structures. Understanding the dynamics of the construction manufacturing sector and the specific types of materials available in the U.S. is essential for companies aiming to deliver value and reliability in their projects.
The Role of the Construction Manufacturing Industry
The Construction Manufacturing industry encompasses the production of essential materials and components used in building infrastructure. This includes everything from structural steel and cement to prefabricated components and insulation materials. These materials are manufactured under strict quality standards to ensure they meet the demands of various construction projects, from residential buildings to large commercial complexes and public infrastructure. The industry's growth has been driven by the need for both efficiency and sustainability, with manufacturers continually exploring ways to produce materials that are not only durable but also environmentally friendly. Advanced manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing and automated production lines, have reshaped the way materials are produced. These technologies allow for faster production times, lower waste, and improved precision. In addition, the industry is responding to increasing demand for eco-friendly materials, leading to innovations in recycling and the creation of sustainable building products. This shift not only reduces the carbon footprint of construction projects but also aligns with regulatory requirements for environmental protection, making the Construction Manufacturing Industry a significant force in the future of building design and implementation.
Tumblr media
Critical Types of Construction Materials In the USA
The variety of construction materials available for projects in the USA reflects the diverse needs of different types of infrastructure. Common materials include concrete, which is prized for its strength and versatility, and structural steel, valued for its flexibility and durability in large structures. Additionally, wood remains a preferred choice for residential buildings, offering natural insulation and sustainability. With recent developments, lightweight and fire-resistant materials, such as fiber cement and engineered wood products, have also gained popularity, especially in regions prone to natural disasters. In the U.S., a growing emphasis on sustainable materials has led to increased use of recycled products. Recycled concrete, for example, provides a robust and eco-friendly option for roads and foundations, while recycled steel reduces the need for mining new resources. Green insulation materials, such as cellulose and natural wool, also meet high standards for energy efficiency and environmental safety, reducing heating and cooling costs. The availability of high-quality Construction Materials In USA ensures that projects not only meet safety standards but also support environmental sustainability.

Two quotes I read today. Written 50 years apart but discussing the same phenomenon of female oppression.
The first is an excerpt of Kate Millett’s masterful takedown of Freud’s conclusions (which were foundational to much of the USA’s mid-20th century backlash to feminist advances) in her work Sexual Politics:
The three most distinguishing traits of female personality, were, in Freud's view, passivity, masochism, and narcissism. Even here, one can see a certain merit in the Freudian paradigm taken as pure description. The position of women in patriarchy is such that they are expected to be passive, to suffer, and to be sexual objects; it is unquestionable that they are, with varying degrees of success, socialized into such roles. This is not however what Freud had in mind. Nor had he any intention of describing social circumstances. Instead, he believed that the elaborate cultural construction we call "femininity" was largely organic, e.g., identical with, or clearly related to, femaleness. He therefore proceeded to define femininity as constitutional passivity, masochism, and narcissism. . . .
In convincing himself that the three traits of femininity were in fact constitutional and biologically destined, Freud had made it possible to prescribe them and for his followers to attempt to enforce them, perpetuating a condition which originates in oppressive social circumstances. To observe a group rendered passive, stolid in their suffering, forced into trivial vanity to please their superordinates, and, after summarizing these effects of long subordination, chose to conclude they were inevitable, and then commence to prescribe them as health, realism, and maturity, is actually a fairly blatant kind of Social Darwinism. As a manner of dealing with deprived groups, it is hardly new, but it has rarely been so successful as Freudianism has been in dealing with women.
The second quote is from Yagmur Uygarkizi’s piece “‘Feminism Allowed You to Speak’: Reinforcing Intergenerational Feminist Solidarity Against Sophisticated Attacks” which was published in the anthology Spinning And Weaving: Radical Feminism for the 21st Century. Uygarkizi is here discussing the foundational tenets of queer theory and its attendant postmodern analyses of women as socially-constructed entities:
Finally, and most importantly, sex roles are no longer imposed but ingrained: gender becomes an identity. If you as a woman are foolish enough to abide by the stereotypes that constrain you, then that's your problem: you could have just identified your way out of it. This is the message the disparaging "cis women" expression hides.
We are witnessing an essentialisation of our oppression: what men do to us is who we are apparently. If they rape us, we are the rape. If they veil us, we are the veil. If they stereotype us, we are the stereotype. One can sense a hint of victim-blaming here: just like a woman in prostitution/pornography might feel that she is only good at that, queer theory rehashes that yes, that is very true. Instead of taking material biological reality as the basis of an identity, socially constructed practices are taken as accurate indicators of someone's identity. What this means is that any criticism of those practices becomes a criticism of the person. Whorephobia. Islamophobia. Transphobia. The basis of the discrimination shifts from the female sex to the sex-based discrimination itself.
The link between Freudianism and postmodern queer theory is a simple one: women exist to be oppressed. We have simply shifted from it being seen as a natural phenomenon, based on the material reality of sex, to a chosen one based on the psycho-social assumptions based around personal identity.

Tumblr media
Ilies was kind enough to take Pierre, Addie and I to the airport early on Monday morning. Pierre had put his Audi on one of the car transporters heading to Alpine’s mechanical headquarters in Paris and he would pick it up from there later in the week when he returned for some training. With the next race being in Canada there was a two week break so he was going to spend a few days in London with us as long as he kept up his fitness routine.
I was apparently the one in charge of making sure that happened but his personal trainer might have been shocked to hear that my idea of exercise involved us tangled in bedsheets. I kept that to myself of course and just agreed. As long as I got to watch while Pierre worked out in my home gym then it was a win-win to me.
“Thanks for the lift, Granny,” I said as I kissed her cheeks after boarding the private jet.
“It’s on the way to New York so it’s no hassle, honey. Are you sure you don’t want to come to Fashion Week with me?”
I grimaced at the idea. “And have you try to use me as a model again, no thanks.”
“What?” she asked innocently as she buckled up into her seat. “You’ve got the legs for it.”
“She’s not wrong,” Pierre whispered in my ear. “They are very sexy.”
I elbowed him lightly but he just laughed it off and I continued on my way down the aisle. Two rows down I found dad, who was half asleep, and heading home to see mum. I sat Addie into the seat beside him and buckled her in before setting up her latest animated fixation, Mulan, on the screen in front of her.
“Let mummy know if you need to go to the loo,” I reminded her before pulling the earphones over her head.
There was no reason to be all sat together so I passed the last two rows before sitting down. There was only the galley behind us but since the flight was a little over two hours I doubted anyone would ask for refreshments and we would be left alone.
“Are you okay?” I asked as we hit some turbulence coming into Heathrow and Pierre clutched the armrest between us. His eyes were closed and his lips pressed in a firm line as he nodded his head. He had been uneasy since takeoff but repeatedly lied and said he was fine. “You couldn’t have picked a sport with more travel if you tried.”
“I’m fine with flying…until it gets bumpy.” He let me pull his hand from the leather material and replaced it with my own as we watched the GPS of the plane inching closer to the airport.
“Miss Vowles, Mr Gasly, if you could please fill these out before we land that would be wonderful,” the stewardess said as she handed me three Passenger Locator Forms before moving on to dad.
I filled out mine and Addie’s while Pierre did his but he took a little longer since he wasn’t a UK Citizen like us and had more pages to complete. I actually had dual citizenship through the ‘grandfather scheme’ which meant I was entitled to apply for citizenship where my parents and grandparents were citizens. Legally, I could hold a passport of Mexico, the USA and the United Kingdom but I preferred to use my UK one since it had the least restrictions.
If Erik ever tried to petition for access to Addie and won, then she could have all three passports and a Norwegian one too.
The thought turned my mood sour and as we touched down on British soil I began to rue my decision to come back. I knew I needed to be here to pack up the house for the move and visit Dr Pascoe in person but there was always a little storm cloud in the back of my mind when I was in London.
The city was tainted of memories with Erik, the restaurants we had eaten at, the cinemas we have gone to. I couldn’t even drive near Islington because that was where our house had been. Just thinking about it had the walls of the plane closing in around me and I reached for the paper bag in the storage pocket.
The paper crinkled in and out with each breath, the speed too fast for any rational thought and shadows moved around me until two faces came into focus.
“Sweetheart, look at me,” dad said but it was hard to catch the slippery words as my head swam. “Deep breath, in through your nose. Do it with me.” I tried to copy him but my intake was as shaky as my hands. “Good girl, now out through your mouth, nice and slow.”
My clothes felt too tight and my hair clung to my clammy forehead and I tried to brush it away but my hands were shaking too much. The strands of hair remained and I grew frustrated.
“I’ve got it, Bri, just focus on breathing,” Pierre said as he brushed it back for me. A cool damp cloth came to rest on my forehead and I closed my eyes as I leant back in the seat. “Mama’s alright, princesse.”
My eyes flashed open to see Addie looking afraid and I opened my arms for her. “Mummy was just a little overwhelmed, sweetie, I’m sorry it scared you.”
“Was it a bad dream again?” she asked as she clung tight to me.
“Kind of. You know, I could do with your help.” She perked up at the idea of helping and listened intently. “We have no food at home, so I need you to choose where we will have brunch. You don’t have to tell me now, but why don’t you hop back in your seat and have a think about it while we land.”
“Come on, little bug,” dad guided her away, his own worried stare looking back at me as he went.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Pierre asked when we were alone but I shook my head.
“No, I just want to erase the memories of this place.” I tipped my head onto his shoulder and looked up at him. “Tell me that it’s possible.”
He kissed my forehead and I cringed as I realised I was a sweaty mess but he didn’t seem to care as he wrapped an arm around me. “I don’t know about erasing them, but we can make new ones instead.”
We landed without a fuss and while we were taxiing to the terminal we started to say our goodbyes before we would part ways. Dad was already out of his seat, ignoring the seatbelt sign, and kneeling next to Granny having quiet words with each other before they both looked at me with concern.
Dad rose to his feet and let Addie climb up for a hug, a bright smile deepening the wrinkles at the corners of Granny’s eyes. “I’m going to miss you, honey. You let me know if you want to come visit alright? We’ll get rid of that posh accent in no time.”
“Don’t want you to go, Granny,” she replied with a trembling lip.
Betty sniffled and blinked away the tears that quickly built along her waterline. “You’re going to make me ruin my makeup.”
“You’d still look beautiful,” I said as I gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you for the visit and the ride.”
“Of course, you’re welcome to use it whenever you need, especially trying to juggle work, motherhood and a long distance relationship,” she said looking between Pierre and I. “Take all the help you can get to make it work.”
Pierre’s hand took mine and gave it a squeeze while I answered through my widening smile. “I might take you up on that.”
The Gulfstream had come to a stop and I saw two cars parked outside the little window as the stewardess opened the door. Dad would take one to the domestic terminal for his next flight to Manchester while we would be in the other heading home to Twickenham.
“Oh, and Damien, give my love to Otmar when you see him,” Granny said with a fond smile for the man she thought of as the second child she never had. “I’ll see you in Italy, unless I decide to pop by before that. Never know when I might need a holiday at my age.”
“Mom, you’re retired.”
She scoffed and waved him off. “I retired from designing but I still own the company, dear. I can’t trust anyone else to run it right, unless it’s family.” Her eyes darted to me and I held my hands up.
“Don’t finish that thought, Granny, I’m an engineer - I like tinkering with mechanics and engines.”
“I’ve heard Pierre’s a man of fashion and business or so the internet tells me. You could always marry him. Just an idea, honey.” She sent me a wink and I stumbled over my feet, nearly sending myself out down the steps. “Take care of my precious babies, Mr Gasly.”
“Nothing would make me happier,” he replied with such sincerity that I missed the step in front of me and his hand shot out, catching my arm and pulling me back. “Was that a test?”
“No,” I sighed and blew a strand of hair out of my face with a huff. “That's just how clumsy I am. Let’s go before I break my neck and never get to walk down the aisle Granny’s busy daydreaming about now.”
“I’ve had the design of your wedding dress waiting since you were 18. You tell me when to start sewing it.”
“Bye Granny, bye Matthew!” I concentrated on walking down the stairs with an amused Pierre behind me carrying Addie and dad coming down last.
“Your mother said she’s blocked out her calendar for Wednesday if you can come to dinner.”
I looked at Pierre since he was meant to be flying to Paris on Thursday morning and Addie and I would be flying into Rouen to meet him on Saturday. “It’s a four hour drive.”
“It shouldn’t be difficult to change my flight to leave from Manchester instead, if you want to stay the night?”
I nodded to dad, “it’s a tentative yes but I’ll let you know once he’s checked the flights. Addie say bye-byes to grandad.”
Our farewells were far quicker and our luggage had already been put into the cars by the time we were finished and going our own separate ways. I would have preferred to have my own car but it was at home after getting a cab to the airport when we left two weeks ago but thankfully it wasn’t peak rush hour and it wasn’t too far to get home.
“Addie, have you decided where you want to eat?”
“The dog park!”
Pierre looked aghast as he spun in his passenger seat at the front and I laughed at the face he pulled. “It’s just a cafe that happens to be on the same block as a dog park. It’s called Ivy and she knows it too,” I said as I tickled Addie’s toes for being a little trickster. “It’s just around the corner from our house so we can drop the bags off first and walk.”
He relaxed back into his seat knowing he wasn’t going to be eating in a dog park and I scoured the inside pockets of my handbag until I found my keys. I gripped the remote to the front gate as the driver pulled onto our street and suddenly had a new fear - had I tidied the house before we left? No. The answer was, no. I had been running around like a madwoman trying to get Addie ready so I decided the toys on the floor and unfolded washing on the couch could wait for my return.
“Shit,” I muttered under my breath and Pierre’s eyes shot to me through the little mirror on his sun visor, his eyebrow cocked in a silent question. “My house is a fucking mess.”

The future of innovation and efficiency that many governments and private companies dream of runs into ecological and geopolitical limits. But AI does not rely on raw materials only during the construction of its physical infrastructures; it does so throughout its cycle. For instance, data centres and servers need large amounts of water to cool down. According to a study published in Nature in 2021, Google and Microsoft declared using respectively 15.8 billion and 3.6 billion litres of water. We don’t know if these numbers are trustworthy. As a telling example, Microsoft has been involved in a scandal regarding the water expenditure of one of its data centres in the Netherlands. Whereas the technology company declared to the Dutch authorities that the centre consumed between 12 and 20 million litres, it transpired it was actually consuming 84 million. Meanwhile, in August 2022, Thames Water announced reviewing the water expenditure of data centres in London due to the drought scenario the capital faced that summer. While the average annual cooling system consumption of a small data centre in the US is estimated to be 25 500 000 litres, that of a person in Nigeria is 12 410 litres – 2 000 times less. AI is also energy intensive. The more data to be analysed, the higher the energy consumption. More sophisticated algorithms, which need long computational time, consume even more. For example, it is estimated that training an algorithm to automatically produce text uses 190,000 kWh; that is, 120 times more than the average annual consumption of a household in Europe in 2020. To generate this energy, raw materials such as organic matter, uranium, coal or water, among others, are again needed. Although some of the big tech companies claim that their energy is produced sustainably, the data shows another trend. In 2019, Greenpeace published a report about an Amazon Data Centre in Virginia (USA), which is considered to be one of the most important in Amazon’s global infrastructure. Greenpeace warned against the important growth in energy consumption in the region due to this data centre’s activities. Despite Amazon’s pledge to invest in “green” energy for this data centre, the reality is that its investment in fossil fuels has increased shamelessly. In 2021, data centres were estimated to consume 0.9-1.3% of global electricity demand. Given AI’s high energy consumption and the current energy crisis, the techno-optimistic dreams of governments and Silicon Valley’s companies could be dashed by the high price of energy.
