Other Kongo influences at Congo Square were documented by folklorist Puckett.
African Americans poured libations at the four corners of Congo Square at midnight during a dark moon for a Hoodoo ritual.

REVIEW: BBC's Jazzology with Soweto Kinch
REVIEW: BBC's Jazzology with Soweto Kinch @BBC @MusicMagazine @BBCYoungMus @BBCiPlayer @BBCFOUR @sowetokinch @SonsOfKemet @zoe_rahman @T_Blanchardn @laughandaguise #jazz #sowetokinch #jazzology
There are so many misconceptions about jazz, argues the show’s presenter, saxophonist Soweto Kinch. It’s old-fashioned, impenetrable, for the elite. Or as the MOBO Award-winning bandleader of Sons of Kemet Shabaka Hutchings put it, “one of the last spits in the faces of the African-American community” as white people take the music of black people and eat their dinner to it.
An observation backed…

Cloak & Dagger #109 “Back Breaker”
Victory is not what they hoped it would be for our heroes as they hit their low points.
Auntie Chantelle makes three markers before seeing a Roxxon pipe behind a gate. The first marking is on Orleans Street south of Burgundy, the next is in Congo Square, and the third is back on Orleans Street outside #905.
Tandy shows Liam her hideout at Saints Peter and Paul Church and tries to steal his hopes from him.
Tyrone gets angry at his parents as they are leaving the police station on Esplanade Avenue south of Decatur.
Tyrone’s mother Adina sits in a meeting in a daze at the Roxxon Gulf offices at 1010 Common Street.
Both Tandy and Tyrone are walking down Royal Avenue northeast of Esplanade when they notice their reflections, Tyrone’s in a puddle on the ground and Tandy’s in the window of Where Y’Art Gallery.
O’Reilly is treating her injuries at her car at the 219 South Rampart Street Parking lot when she hears a call about Fuchs’ murderer.
I still need to identify St. Sebastian's Prep, the cop bar, Mina Hess's container house, & the swamp.

NOLADrinks Show - 2-22-18 - New Orleans Kitchens in the Civil Rights Movement - News and Notes
On this edition of the NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we welcome returning guest, Pepper Bowen of the Culinaria Center, part of the National Food and Beverage Foundation. This time around, we discuss kitchens in New Orleans that supported activists during the Civil Rights Movement as well as other topics, including African-American women selling pralines in Congo Square prior to the Civil War and more. We also touch on some news including the passing of Mr. Okra, Tales of the Cocktail, French Quarter Festival, the James Beard Awards, and more.

NOLADrinks – 2-22-18 – New Orleans Kitchens During the Civil Rights Movement with Pepper Bowen of Culinaria
We start things off talking about the passing of New Orleans icon, Arthur J. Robinson, better known as “Mr. Okra.” We also talk about where you can recycle your Mardi Gras beads and some news on how the NOLADrinks Show will now be part of the National Food and Beverage Foundation’s podcast platform. I am really honored to have the show selected as part of the inaugural group of those chosen to launch this great concept!
Next up is our featured interview. We chat with Pepper Bowen, Director of the Culinaria Center with the National Food and Beverage Foundation (NatFAB). We record the show at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, also a part of NatFAB.
We discuss part of the role New Orleans played in the Civil Rights Movement. Namely, as a location where kitchens fed activists and gave them a place to meet and organize. We discuss some of her current research into the idea that African-American women sold pralines in Congo Square and how this may have functioned. Also, we talk about her soon-to-launch podcast, “Green Pepper,” on food policy and the environment that is coming soon, how food was used as a weapon against African-Americans who attempted to vote in the South, and much more!
We close the show with some news and notes. We talk about the recent announcement of the James Beard Awards semi-finalists. New Orleans boasts fourteen nominees in the first phase of the process. We also talk about the change of ownership of Tales of the Cocktail, which was just completed this week. Finally, we touch on the French Quarter Festival’s performer lineup being released – we will be talking with them on next week’s show, by the way.
Below the map that shows the location of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, you can subscribe to, stream, and download the podcast below…
Cheers, You All!
~ Bryan

[Congo Square][James Baldwin]
Prendendo spunto dai…
