On this day, 17 April 1958, Belgium opened the world's fair, which included a ‘human zoo' displaying Black men, women, and children in their supposed 'native conditions' found in the Congo, then a Belgian colony. The people used were abused and taunted by white spectators, who threw money and bananas over the bamboo fence to try to provoke a reaction. One Belgian journalist reported on how, on one occasion, a white woman threw half a candy bar over the fence to a young Congolese boy, who promptly threw it back at her "without even looking up, with an air of noble contempt." The Congolese people in the exhibit, as well as Congolese workers in the fair, were housed in an isolated building, in cramped accommodation with restrictions on receiving visitors or being able to leave. The exhibition was widely praised in Belgium at the time, with even socialist newspaper Le Peuple declaring that its "story… [was] in complete agreement with historical truth", and showed how Congolese people had been brought from "the night of prehistory to the light of civilisation". Authorities intended for the exhibit to continue until October, however, they were forced to return the Congolese inhabitants home in July due to them resisting their inhumane treatment, and not tolerating it any further. Racist human zoos took place in many countries, including the US, UK, Germany, and Norway, with the last one we are aware of being held in France in 1994. Belgian colonialism in Congo is estimated to have killed eight to 15 million people. Insects are eaten in 128 countries, according to a study published this year in the journal Scientific Reports, which found 2,205 species are eaten worldwide. Most of these species are in Asian countries, followed by Mexico, and African countries. In Thailand, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and China hundreds of species of insect are consumed, with Brazil, Japan and Cameroon each eating 100 or more species. Singaporean chefs will be able to import many creative insect recipes from around the world, where they are served deep fried, on sticks, in noodles, in margaritas, in arancini, tinned, or confit. Insect products are sold round the world in restaurants, markets, supermarkets and from vending machines. The EU is in the process of approving more insects as what it calls a “novel food source”, but to date it has approved only four. Australiahas only approved three species – a cricket and two kinds of mealworm – so far as “non-novel, non-traditional” food sources.

Why does the UN want us to eat insects? Because it is crunch time climate-wise, and insects are a much more sustainable source of protein than livestock. They have a high “conversion rate”, which means they are efficient at turning plant energy into protein, or in other words, turning what they eat into their own bodies. “Crickets need six times less feed than cattle, four times less than sheep, and twice less than pigs and broiler chickens to produce the same amount of protein,” according to the FAO. They can also be farmed indoors, use less space and water, and produce lower emissions. Because they can be farmed in rural and urban areas in relatively small rooms, they can also be a source of income for people who have less access to land or the training needed to farm livestock.

i’ve recently come across an insightful video analysis that was reposted on tiktok, explaining the Gaza situation in depth and touching on the geopolitical and economic motivations that background it, along with the potential impact from the ethnic cleansing and the active genocide of Palestinian people by zionists. here’s a summary with some links to more-reputable news articles:

-roughly around a month ago, netanyahu declared his plan for a “new middle east,” an economic corridor stretching from India to the European continent, through the UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and “israel.”

-due to the weakening of the US Dollar, this “new middle east” corridor serves as a hopeful (on their part) counter to China’s new ongoing “silk road.” it’s essentially a move for leverage on world economics, trade, and politics.

-Russia is the country with the largest proven reserves of natural gas. in 2022, Nord Stream 1 and 2 (Russia’s gas pipelines) were both blown up. sanction packages from EU ban Russian gas. no more Russian gas coming into Europe.

-Iran, the country with the second largest gas reserves, signs the Nuclear Deal in 2015-2016. the US backs out of the deal and reimpose harsh sanctions on Iran. Iran is barred from selling its gas and oil to Europe and others.

-with Russia and Iran out of the picture, “israel” (US-backed) proposes itself as a solution to EU’s gas shortages. in 2010, they find the Leviathan—a giant gas field in the middle east (Mediterranean Sea), off the coast of Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria.

-Syria initially declines offers over its gas reserves; the US now controls 1/3 of Syria and all its oil fields, and “israel” regularly bombs it’s most vital port (Latakia). another major port is in Beirut, which mysteriously exploded in 2020. both Syria and Lebanon’s maritime activity are limited, including in trade and gas exploration.

-Gaza, also having its own unexplored gas fields, has been under siege, under naval blockade since 2007. the only working port left in the coast is haifa port in “israel.” “israel” is now the only one able to explore gas and implement an economic corridor, like the proposed “new middle east.” what the US and “israel” have essentially done is killed off the competition, stole their goods, and cornered the market.

-in light of Europe’s gas shortages, to get them gas before winter, “israel” attempts to “stabilize” the region by solving “the Palestinian question”—more than displacement, they’ve resorted to ethnic cleansing and genocide. basically an acceleration of their plan.

-what Palestinian resistance groups have done in response was because they were backed into a corner. tooth and nail, life or death. it did not happen in a vacuum.

it has always been a move for natural resources; Palestine, Syria, Congo—every move for destabilization framed as intervention. it has always been greed for capital.

They actually meet underground.

Its brief and its Bee who remembers Prowl first but he doesn’t say anything.

They originally met at a red stop district in the pits beneath Cybertron. Directly under the governing capital.

Prowl was there getting intel for his own personal use while also avoiding the elite guard for dodging the draft.

Prowl was on the run when he hid inside a booth where a small mini bot with alert and fearful door wings were stone still as they pressed against the electric cyber bars meant to keep outsiders from taking who was inside.

Prowl hadn’t seen Bee’s face but Bee saw his.

He remembers how attractive the mech looked completely focused on staying hidden while being so exposed. He found it kind of cute and funny looking back on it but in that moment he was too shocked by the cyber bots sudden appearance to do more than cover his intake and exposed breast mesh.

Prowl didn’t spare more than a klik looking at Bee before he simply went back the way he came in and kept going. All Prowl had cared about was the fact he was silent and didn’t alarm anyone to his whereabouts. For that the cyber ninja was grateful.

The second time they met Prowl took notice of Bee first.

He was hiding behind a of large boulders watching the repair crew work on cleaning a space bridge. He’d recently lost Yoketron and was wandering without a purpose.

His spark hurt deeply at the loss and guilt consumed him every waking solar cycle and yet looking at the yellow mini who helped the large green bot repair the space bridge, soothed his troubled processor in a way he didn’t know possible.

It was one of the reasons he agreed to come along when Optimus offered him a place on the team.

Of course he was closed off and stand offish even to the yellow mini that captivated his attention, though, he was less stand offish with the mecha he learned was called Bumblebee.

Any time the mini asked him to join team bonding he would accept in silence. He’d never do more than stand there and say a few words when he felt like it but he did join.

He even made a point to greet the yellow mini when he felt him near.

He wasn’t a fan of the yellow mini’s pranks but even he could admit they made him smirk a little when no bot was looking.

Prowl didn’t understand why he had such a growing affection for the mini. Maybe it was how carefree he seemed, how he was so full of life, so easily excited and ready to explore. Always lending a helpful servo even if he could be an annoying little pest, he never meant any harm.

Prowl found himself looking forward to late lunar cycles where Bumblebee would make a delicious cup of fuel and share with him. When it was just the two of them up, Prowl meditated and Bumblebee played a hologame with audio connectors in his audios.

They spent alone time together almost every lunar cycle and when Megatron came aboard their ship Prowl remembers the internal terror that almost frizzled his circuits when he saw Bumblebee bump into Megatrons pede.

The relief he felt seeing Bumblebee online from stasis after crash landing on the planet called Earth was so immense he actually wrapped an arm around Bumblebees hip struts. He played it off as trying to help him exit the stasis pod but the look on Ratchets face plates said otherwise.

Bumblebee knew then Prowl felt something for him and when things calmed down enough after settling into their new base turned home, he brought it up.

Prowl was so flustered and awkward it made Bumblebee smile. He teased Prowl so much that lunar cycle the cyber ninja almost kicked him out. But that night they shared a berth watching the stars from inside Prowls room.

Bumblebee’s door wings haven’t stopped fluttering in happiness yet.

I found it interesting to see clips of both Kuprina and Koshkareva dancing the same role 'Fisherman's Wife'. They have such different styles/approaches to performance - I'm not sure which is more correct but Koshkareva felt like a Kitri'ish Fisherman's Wife whilst Kuprina was more of a Giselle Act 1 variation'ish Fisherman's Wife.

I found them both in 'tuus' instagram stories - they have a number of clips from the 2 most recent showings of Pharoah's daughter including snippet of Vailulina as 'Congo'.

I saw those clips! I definitely preferred Kuprina’s dancing of that variation. Also, Valiulina looked very good.

This is the very first Olympics I watched the opening ceremonies via television in its entirety.

Watching Rafeal Nadal, Serena Williams, Carl Lewis, Tony Parker with the torch. Despite wind and rain 🌧️, that Olympic torch did not go out.

Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremonies set the bar for Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion for their own people. Los Angeles 2028, I did not get the volunteer opportunity in Paris, France 🇫🇷 , but USA 🇺🇸 bet not let me down.

This is why I view life is like the Olympics, but my fight, sportsmanship, and competition is everyday, every year, every season, every decade, and every second of each day.
