the thing about Dick Grayson is, he’s been watching Bruce and Clark interact since basically day 1 and has 100% perfected the art of going “yikes” from a safe distance and then moving on with his day.

#im better than u guys cause my fav WAS named there #i have no idea what that is btw (@delphis-oracle)
Story time!
The year is 1954. McCarthyism and the Red Scare are in full swing across the United States, and a child psychiatrist named Fredric Wertham has just published a book called Seduction of the Innocent. In it, he claimed that (among other things) comic books were contributing to juvenile delinquency and constituted a form of negative popular culture that needed to be more closely scrutinized. He specifically called out and examined issues–or at least things he perceived to be issues–he found concerning within comics (including but not limited to depictions or themes of violence, sex, drug use, homosexuality, female nudity, bondage, fascism, and gruesome imagery), particularly in crime and horror comics...but also in stories starring four of the most popular superheroes of the time: Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Robin.
Seduction of the Innocent became a bestseller. Wertham then went on a press tour about his book, arguing that comics had detrimental effects on young people. And concern among parents started to grow. His comments managed to catch the attention of U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver, a progressive Tennessee politician who had a reputation as both a) a fervent organized crime investigator and b) a vocal crusader of consumer protection and anti-trust legislation. More relevantly, he was nationally famous at the time for spearheading the Kefauver hearings, a 15-month investigation into interstate organized crime that had interviewed hundreds of witnesses (including notable crime bosses Willie Moretti, Joe Adonis, and Frank Costello).
To put into perspective how big these hearings were and how famous Kefauver was after them:
An estimated 30 million Americans tuned in to watch the live proceedings in March 1951....The broadcasts made the Kefauver Committee a household name; in March 1951, 72 percent of Americans were familiar with the Kefauver Committee's work....."Never before had the attention of the nation been riveted so completely on a single matter," explained Life magazine. "The Senate investigation into interstate crime," it concluded, "was almost the sole subject of national conversation."
In December 1951 Americans selected Chairman Kefauver as one of 10 most admired men, joining a list of notables including Pope Pius XII, Albert Einstein, and Douglas MacArthur. Kefauver sought the Democratic Party presidential nomination in 1952 and 1956. Though he was unsuccessful in his bid for the presidency, in 1956 Democrats selected Kefauver as their vice presidential candidate. [x]
Anyway, so Wertham's book caught the attention of one of the most famous politicians in America. And Kefauver thought he could leverage its content to launch an investigation into organized crime connections within the comic book industry (which, it has to be said, did exist).
And thus...we get the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency, established in 1953 to investigate the problem of juvenile delinquency, calling a series of public Senate hearings in 1954 to question and interview several major figures from across the comic book industry about whether comic books were "corrupting America's youth." Including Frederic Wertham, by the way, who spent his time claiming that he thought "Hitler was a beginner compared to the comic-book industry. They get the children much younger."
....yeah.
These hearings were widely televised and publicized, including in all of the major newspapers of the day. Technically, nothing actually came of the hearings. No government action ever occured. No changes were ever ordered. The final report didn't even blame comic books for juvenile crime, though it did recommend publishers tone down their content. But the damage was done. 15 publishers went out of business within three months of the hearings. Several other comic publishers dramatically cut down their publishing slate; EC Comics only had one surviving title, Mad Magazine. DC Comics immediately instituted editorial edicts designed to prevent objectionable content from being published within its comics. And to top it all off, the industry voluntarily established the Comics Code Authority, an internal regulatory body that established content guidelines and policed acceptable comic book content published in the United States. And thus ended the Golden Age of Comics.
The CCA's 1954 content guidelines were incredibly restrictive and effectively destroyed horror and crime comics; they also dramatically altered superhero comic content to make published stories lighter, more fantastical, and less prone to dealing with "real-life issues." Over time, individual creators including Stan Lee, Denny O'Neil, Alan Moore, and many others pushed back on these restrictive rules. This pushback led to Code revisions, the rise of independent publishers, a decline in the Code's relevance, and eventually the total dissolution of the CCA in 2011.
And it all started with this one guy and his moral panic-inducing book about how Superman was based in fascism, Wonder Woman comics featured a bondage-loving lesbian, and Batman & Robin were gay for each other. Thus: if your DC fave wasn't directly responsible for inducing a mass moral panic and changing the entire direction of the comic book industry for decades afterwards, they will simply never reach the same level of fame and notoriety as those four heroes. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
tl;dr Seduction of the Innocent launched the original pop culture satanic panic and was directly responsible for the comic industry implementing their own version of the Hays Code, thus utterly decimating the publication of crime and horror comics for 30 years, ending the Golden Age of Comics, and dramatically changing the character depiction and story content of superhero comics. The only four DC superheroes featured in said book were Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Robin.
So if you're looking at your favorite character and wondering if they belong in a discussion about who DC's most famous heroes are or who their "fourth publishing pillar" is, unless they've literally changed the entire direction of the comics industry and demonstrated a sustained multimedia popularity across several decades like those four have (like, for example, Flash as a collective property, which has honorary comic cultural nobility status via the publication of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Mark Waid's Flash run, and Flashpoint) just accept that they don't and never will belong in that category.
Honestly if your fave comic book character wasn't trashed in Seduction of the Innocent and subsequently talked about in a major congressional hearing that changed the direction of the entire comic industry I don't want to hear a word about how "iconic" or "well-known" they are lmfao
#this is my callout post for Harley Quinn stans who want to say she's the Fourth Pillar btw#she will never be Dick Grayson asdfghjkl#dc drama#comic industry#comic book history#long post#dc meta#comics meta#bruce wayne#clark kent#diana of themyscira#dick grayson#frederic wertham#seduction of the innocent

name: Jeanette
pronouns: she/her
preference of communication: Tumblr IMs if we're just starting to chat, but Discord is better for me overall so if you have it I'll usually ask to switch eventually.
name of most active muse(s): Reg Barclay (here) & Clark Kent (there)
experience/how long (months/years?): my first RP blog was in fall 2015
platforms you’ve used: Tumblr and Discord, and a tiny bit on Wire (is that still a thing?)
best experience: I'll say the depth of relationships that I've developed for Reg. I've had some wonderful writing partners that I have long-term arcs and shared character development with and it's honestly wonderful. Some have been going for 5+ years.
rp pet peeves / dealbreakers: Lots of callouts and drama. More posts about politics/current events/social justice than actually writing. Blog policing. Overly aggressive rules pages. Long DNIs (especially if they list other muns/URLs by name). No rules page. No about page. Incomprehensible writing styles and/or formatting. Frequent blog hopping/archiving/refreshing so that threads can never actually get going. Only posting OOC/muse inspo and rarely actually writing. Multis with hundreds of characters. Untagged NSFW. Frequent passive replies.
fluff, angst, or smut: Fluff is lovely. Angst is life. Smut is wonderful but I have to be really comfortable with you.
plots or memes: Plots. Memes are good for icebreakers, but I find they tend to die out unless there's something really gripping in there. Plotted threads are more likely to keep going and explore some interesting character beats, in my experience.
long or short replies: Medium! Short replies like one-liners rarely feel like they're going anywhere (I hardly ever do them now), and long replies I find a bit mentally draining. A couple paragraphs is usually my sweet spot.
best time to write: Usually afternoon/evening.
are you like your muse(s): The main reason I got attached to Reg as a character and eventually decided to pick him up as a muse is for how much I relate to him. I had pretty bad social anxiety as a kid (which still flares up from time to time), so seeing a character dealing with some of the same stuff really spoke to me.

So I”m thinking of making a multi-multi again with a coherent list of muses examples of a google doc
thxwxnderer
Guidelines & Muse List
Hello, call me Brett, I am a 25 y/o male from West Can. I am very slow and socially awkward among other things.
I am very much open to shipping but i don’t want it to be my only type of threads. family, conflict and such and such all threads welcome. that being said when it comes to shipping some conditions are present. for one mun and muse should be eighteen + especially for nsfw threads. and another it is illegal and creepy to ship with muns who are under eighteen and neither would i want to.
nsfw themes will be present. there is teenage angst, angst about named after someone who became a dictator and of course angst of war and trauma and so forth so yes nsfw will be present ask if you want anything specifically tagged so you can filter the post out.
Let’s have fun.that is what we are here so let’s not have drama or fighting. so i am always open for plotting and will respect a muns choice to do or not do a specific thread or plot point.
do not tolerate vauging or dash drama. If there is significant harm and proof of abuse and trauma. I will repost a callout but other then that I mind to myself.
I have problems socializing and I don’t exactly fit in. I dont know what it is but I might be prone to fits of depression and withdrawl from conversations.
all my opens are open for everyone but i can be selective. like i am not icon or gif crazy but ideally use clean ones and edit the text. Don’t use tumblr gifs insertions, its just clunky
I an open to plotting and working on slow burn, long term and even short term threads.
I am still reading through the source material but as always feel free to correct me when I make a mistake in our threads.

me trying to wrap my head around cloud being abusive: [woman with math found her meme] and [man blinking gif]
MOOD!! MOOD!! MOOD!!!
like omg i’m not gonna post or callout the person bc their opinion is theirs but omg they posted screenshots of this comic that i’m not sure where it was from but it’s where Clark was saying something like “I’m just human!!! I’m normal!!! It’s horrible!!! We can’t get married!!” and then Lois in the pannel is like “u right i’m sorry i can’t love u if you don’t have ur superpowers”
and I have SO MUCH BEEF WITH THIS!!!
clark being depressed over not having his superpowers is complete bs like 80% of the time he’s lost his powers he’s been okay with it when he can be human and just enjoy himself who is this man i don’t know him
lois not loving clark because he lost his powers is also complete bs. I know we all have different interpretations of the characters but listen to me. Listen. Clark Kent is who he is. Clark is will always be Clark Kent. Superman is a character he created so he could freely save people and help out when it’s needed. Superman without Clark is nothing. So saying that Clark lost his Superpowers means he’s nothing is just dumb and telling everyone that Lois loves Clark only because of his powers when we literally have alks;djf;lksj 80 years worth of evidence telling us otherwise. (not related but this is also why i hate certain storylines where they get together after clark reveals to lois his secret. I prefer the ones where they date for a while before he tells lois that he’s superman yanno)
There was a line in the post where lois said “Why can’t I love who he is rather than what he was” that is because whoever wrote this issue is a complete dumbass that just wanted angsty man testosterone where Superman can’t be happy
There’s also a part where it says “You can’t understand, because you’re human” WOWOWOWO i hate this line so much when tf has clark ever belittled humans. Clark loves humans with all his heart. It’s the world that he grew up in and it’s the place he calls home. He would never in a million years say something like this. Biologically, he is an alien. But he grew up on Earth. He was raised on Earth. He was raised by human parents.
Okay I don’t have any context to this panel at all and idk what’s going on buT WHAT ABOUT IT IS ABUSIVE. I’ve literally asked 3 other people what’s abusive about it and everyone is stumped. Like dont,,,,,,, go around tossing that word. It’s fine to hate ships and opinions are your own but like wh....at. (if you wanna see the panel feel free to message me i’ll send u the photos bc i don’t wanna start drama by posting the op)
Sigh
I don’t know what comic this is from but I’m tired lmao
Listen also if you don’t like a ship that’s chill but don’t tag your anti posts !!!!!!
