DC x DP Prompt: Bruce is bad at emoting but at least ghosts are empathic (too bad bat kids are not)
Was reading Twincognito on AO3 when I stumbled across this gem again:
~
" “Danny, Tim. I was just…checking in. Is everything alright?” Curse his inability to make meaningful conversation when it wasn’t a life or death situation.
They glanced at each other and shrugged.
Then Danny hauled himself out of the bed and walked over to Bruce.
Bruce tried not to let too much excitement show on his face. "
~
Now I really want to read a story where Bruce adopts Danny post Meta trafficking and is being his usual emotionally constipated self. His kids keep getting mad at him because he's treating their new meta brother who was trafficked poorly (generally being stilted in conversation with him, walking away hurriedly mid-conversation, avoiding Danny when he's feeling really awkward, etc). They think Bruce is discriminating against Danny for being a civilian, meta, dealer's pick, but really it's just Bruce being horribly socially awkward. Danny knows this because of ghost empathy and find the whole thing hilarious. The whole thing comes to a head with the Bat Kids staging an intervention in the Bat Cave.

The first dyke I ever met was a former straight woman who told me she had been abused and materially abandoned by men too many times and actively decided to start pursuing relationships with women. She and her lesbian partner had been together for over a decade at the time I knew her. She was my boss at a coffee shop when I was fifteen, and her story profoundly shaped how I think about lesbianism and queer identity.
Like, not all dykes are born to it. Just something to think about, ladies.

IF it can be helped at all, stay home when you are sick to prevent your illness from spreading to others, even if it's not a "serious" illness and is just a common cold, a common cold can still be really detrimental anyone with a weakened or compromised immune system from conditions including, but not limited to, leukemia, HIV, and hepatitis. And you can never know if one of your co-workers or a customer or a random stranger at the store has or lives with someone who has one of these conditions.
Not everyone can help it, some people risk losing their job if they call in sick, and not everyone has someone they can call on to run to the store for essentials while they're sick.
In these cases at least consider wearing a mask while you're in public so as to prevent spreading your sickness to co-workers / customers / random strangers you encounter while out in public. There are several cultures where even pre-COVID times it was considered rude to go out in public without a mask even if you had a simple cold because of it being inconsiderate to spread your sickness to others.
Now, if it can be helped at all, if you have a job where you can call in sick without losing your income, or if you have a job where you can work form home, or if you have anyone at all you can call on to run to the store for you to grab essentials, use that!
"Oh but I don't want to inconvenience my co-workers by having them down a person today, what if they really need my help?" You know what's going to inconvenience them more is when you make everyone at work sick, and some of them might either have a compromised immune system or live with someone who does.
"Oh but I don't want to inconvenience my friend by asking them to grab some essentials from the store for me while I'm sick!" You know what's going to be more inconvenient is when you spread your sickness to that dad you stood in line behind at the store who has a child at home withe leukemia, or a spouse with HIV.
And again, of course not everyone has an option. Some people risk losing their income if they call into work sick, or they don't have anyone who they can call on to get essentials from the store for them. But again, at least consider masking up to mitigate the risk of spreading your illness to vulnerable people who could be seriously harmed by even a common cold or mild flu.

I really do keep trying and failing to expand on this main paragraph of this post both because I kind of said the core of it but also, on some level, I have always loathed the stripped of choice/but they're literally neurodivergent and a minor and a disabled nb punk and a lesbian and people were mean to them to a point that goes beyond "this is bad media analysis". It is perhaps the one thing other than bigotry that crosses into "you're not just an annoying guy in my fandom; I genuinely think you probably are terrible in real life" and this has only been underscored by the fact that most of the people who gravitate to these defenses are the people in fandom spaces I would say show the most frightening inability to treat anyone other than themselves as people with feelings. I suppose the good thing I can say about What Doesn't Break is that it utterly shreds that "stripped of choice" narrative and stomps on the pieces in terms of actual events, even though some writing decisions seem like a half-hearted attempt to present the opposite view.

CE Chapter 32: First Morning as Husband and Wife
Tumblr media
Masterlist
The sun shone through the curtains, waking up the newly married couple. Ellie rolled over smiling when she saw her husband watching her.
"How's my gorgeous wife this beautiful morning?" He asked, his voice deep with sleep.
"She's tired," Ellie mumbled as she cuddled into her husband's chest.
"Well, she doesn't leave for her cruise until tomorrow," he said, dragging his hand up and down her back. "She can spend all day, right here in this bed, in her husband's arms."
"Your wife likes the sound of that," she giggled as she cuddled more into him.
"And your husband loves the idea," he said tightening his arms around her. He listened as Ellie's breathing slowed down and she fell back asleep.
As his wife slept on his chest, he imagined his life with her. He pictured coming home to his pregnant wife chasing after their other child. He imagined running and scooping up their son, pulling him away from his mother. He imagined playing with his son as his wife sits on the couch with her feet up. He could hear their cook in the kitchen making Ellie's favorite pregnancy meal.
Suddenly, his happy dream turned into a nightmare as he pictured alarms throughout the house going off. He imagined himself jumping up, helping his wife to her feet, and picking up his son. It was almost too clear as he raced his family through the house, trying to get them somewhere safe.
The idea of losing his wife or his children made him subconsciously tighten his arms around Ellie. He looked down and watched his beautiful wife sleep on his chest. George shifted so Ellie was completely laying on top of him. He wasn't doing this for the sexual release it gave him. He was doing this because he wanted to hold her close.
In that moment, with his new wife asleep on his chest, he swore to her and to any future kids they have, that he would put all of his energy and focus on protecting his family. As long as his family was safe, he didn't care what happened to him or his organization.
He held his breath when Ellie let out a small moan as she cuddled into his chest. She woke up, George watching as her eyes fluttered open. She looked up, her face turning bright pink when she saw George watching her. She giggled as she moved a little so her hands were under her chin.
"Hey, you," she whispered.
"Hello," George smiled. He reached up and moved a piece of hair out of her face. "I love you."
"I love you too," Ellie giggled. She gasped, quickly turning into multiple laughs as George rolled them over. She waited for him to lean down and kiss her, but he didn't. Instead, he sighed and looked deeply into her eyes.
"I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you," he whispered. Ellie opened her mouth to agree but George continued, "Everything I do will be for you and our family. Now that we're married, my entire world revolves around you. And when we have children, my world revolves around you and them."
"I want to be a good wife," Ellie said, her voice dropping. "I want to be by your side and support you in every way you need. I'm just worried I won't be able to do it."
"What are you talking about?" George asked, sitting up. He leaned against the headboard and pulled his wife with him.
"I still don't know much about your organization," Ellie said, pulling her knees up to her chest and fixing the blanket around herself.
"You don't need to do anything with that," he smiled as he wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her into his side. She sighed as she leaned her head on his shoulder. "I handle all of that, baby girl. All you need to focus on is being yourself. I need someone to come home to that helps me disconnect. That's what you are. You can do whatever you want. You can keep working at your shop. You could stay at home. It's up to you."
"I feel like I should know something about your organization and what you and your men do," she mumbled.
"Let me worry about all that dark stuff," George sighed. "I deal with that so you don't have to."
The newlyweds sat like that for a few minutes. Finally, Ellie started to get out of bed.
"Where are you going?" George pouted. She reached down and grabbed his button-up. He leaned against the bedframe, smirking at the fact that Ellie didn't button up his shirt and it still revealed. . . A lot.
"I'm gonna take a shower before we go to dinner," she said, grabbing some clothes out of her suitcase.
"Damn," George moaned. "I have a gorgeous wife."
Ellie stood up and turned around. She crossed her arms over her chest and playfully smirked at him. She unfolded her arms and grabbed George's button-up. She watched her husband shift in their hotel bed as she removed his shirt so it pooled at her feet. She turned on her heel, taking extra long to get in the shower. George was about to turn on the tv but he noticed his wife left the bathroom door wide open.
                                * * * * *
Ellie walked out of the shower, tightening the towel around her body. She looked up to see George still watching her. She walked over and climbed into bed, instantly straddling her husband's lap.
She leaned in and pressed her lips to his. They instantly fell into their perfect sync. George gently rolled them over without breaking the kiss. He instantly grabbed the blanket and draped it over them.
"George?" Ellie broke the kiss.
"Is something wrong, my love?"
"No," she said instantly. "I just. . . I wanted to talk about our future."
"Okay," he smiled. George rolled off of Ellie and fixed the blanket, making sure it covered her. "What about it?"
"Are you okay if I still work at the bookshop?"
"Of course, baby," he said quickly. "I'm proud of the work you've put into it. I want to support you."
"Thanks, Georgie," Ellie said, her voice softening.
"Anything else?" He asked gently.
"Umm," she hesitated, "there might be something else."
"What is it, darling?"
"The thing is. . . I've always wanted. . ." Ellie sighed. "I've wanted children for as long as I can remember. I want a family, George."
"I want a family too," he chuckled. "Honestly, I've always thought about starting my family as soon as I got married."
"I did, too," she chuckled. "But can we wait a year before we start our family? I want to spend the first year of our marriage focusing on just us and getting used to our new life together."
George leaned in and kissed his wife. Their lips started moving roughly in sync as they laid back down. Ellie giggled when her husband broke the kiss and started sucking on her neck.
"Georgie," Ellie moaned, "baby, we have dinner reservations in under an hour and neither one of us is dressed."
"We could always order in," George smirked. Ellie pushed on her husband's chest, smirking when she saw his pout.
"We haven't left the hotel since we got here last night," she chuckled.
"Fine," he sighed dramatically as he crawled off of her.
The two got dressed and headed to the restaurant. They went through the night, enjoying their first day as a married couple. They sat down and ordered their food. As soon as the waiter left, Ellie broke their comfortable silence.
"So back to our conversation later," she said, her face burning, "how many kids were you thinking about having?"
"I don't really know," George said honestly. "I've thought about having kids but never really put a number to it. Then again, I'm not the one who has to carry the baby around for nine months and then go through hours of labor to bring our child into the world."
"Fair point," she laughed, looking down at her plate.
"Did you have a number?"
"I was thinking three or four," Ellie admitted. George reached over and grabbed his wife's hand.
"I love the idea of three or four kids," he said softly. "I would have as many kids as you want."
                                * * * * *
They walked back to the hotel with George continually checking the area. They had agreed that neither one of their security teams should accompany them on their honeymoon. Even though they had both agreed to it, George was a little hesitant.
"You okay?" Ellie giggled. George led her over to the nearest bench and they sat down. He looked down at their intertwined hands.
"I need you to know something," George whispered. "If you ever wanted to leave the organization, I would."
"What?" Ellie asked, her heart jumping into her throat. "Baby, are you serious? You've been raised in this organization. You'd really walk away from it?"
"For you?" He whispered, pressing his forehead to Ellie's. "I'd do anything for you, Mrs. Montain."
"I would do anything for you, Mr. Mountain," she whispered. "Simply ask."

I'm watching GameRiot's playthrough of Veilguard, and one of the minor characters you meet is 99% voiced by Simon Templeman, Loghain's VA. Either they hired him to voice someone new, OR there might actually be a way for our past choices to matter.

here's a hot take for today
the narrative function of sex is the same as the narrative function of fight scenes is the same as the narrative function of songs in a musical
no i will not explain
#taz talks#writing#actually i WILL explain but i'll do it in the tags#these each serve the same function within their respective appropriate genres#each one is a kind of revelation#they heighten the connection between 2+ characters and highlight relationships and feelings and needs#they are out of place in genres where they do not belong and/or as curveballs when the narrative did not provoke them from the start#but they have the same sort of emotional/dramatic build-up#talk -> sing -> dance (talk -> yell -> stab) ((talk -> flirt -> You Know))#and they are all expressions of intense physicality and intimacy through physical gesture and interaction#they are fundamentally empty and boring if there is not a deeper purpose or drive behind them#although they can still occasionally be entertaining on their own if your audience is specifically seeking that experience out#people who do not like them will be very unhappy to encounter one where it isn't supposed to be#it is very easy to ruin the mood with poor word choice#many people have an inherent sense for terrible ones but it's often difficult or complicated to explain precisely why a bad one fails#when executed properly they are a very raw and intimate expression of a character's most fundamental needs and desires#the fluff is stripped away and there is nothing left but a series of needs. conflicting or cooperating.#and even when you're lying during one it's still a form of truth#none of these things are remotely necessary to tell a powerful or compelling story but if you're going to use them you need to do it right#also all 3 of these things are difficult if not impossible to write if you are not both interested in them and personally invested#this post brought to you by me trying to write smut about my dnd characters and failing because i generally hate /reading/ smut#so i have none of the vocabulary or instinct for it that i do for. say. graphic violence (or lyrical poetry)

hey galemancers I found a truly horrible "how are you feeling?" answer in act 2
Tumblr media
Tav: How are you feeling? Gale: Oh, you know. Filled with the bottomless dread that can only come from your own impending and self-inflicted death. Gale: Glad to have met you though. At least I'm going out on a high.

I love that half the fnaf fandom consider the Fnaf Musical by Random Encounters as being more canon than the actual movie and i think that's the most fandom the fandoms ever fandomed
