As a #child, I was always way ahead of my time when it came to hairstyles. I also vividly remember wondering for several months why this octopus on my shirt had only four legs. My working theory was that the other legs were hidden behind the head, and so I clearly understood three-dimensional space AND marine biology. Andrey Kolmogorov
Tumblr media
Andrey Kolmogorov
On April 25th, 1903 in Tambov in Central Russia, Aldrey Kolmogorov was born. His mother was unmarried and died during childbirth, and the man who we believe to have been his father was a revolutionary who was in exile. Andrey was considered an orphan and taken in by his aunt, a schoolteacher. Andrey’s aunt was able to raise him comfortably at the country estate of his maternal grandfather who was a wealthy aristocrat, and he attended the school where she taught. This aunt would later adopt Andrey at the age of seven.
Andrey Kolmogorov – Child Genius?
From a very early age, Andrey was extremely proficient in mathematics. He showed great promise, and is it often told that when he was only five or six years old, he would regularly ‘publish’ his mathematical findings in the school newspaper. His fascination with numbers and his natural talent for understanding mathematics marked him apart during his younger school years.
Andrey Kolmogorov and his aunt moved to Moscow and this is where he attended high school. All the while, he was privately studying mathematics in his own time, familiarizing himself with the work of important pioneering mathematicians. After his graduation, he attended both the Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemistry and Technology to study metallurgy and the Moscow State University to study History and Mathematics. While the world came to recognize Andrey Kolmogorov as a mathematician and technologist, in his early years he showed a keen interest in not just mathematics and technology but also in history and biology. During his time as a student, he began to publish papers – most notably in the field of trigonometry – and attract attention from the academic world. He was working beyond the level of his peers and even taught mathematics and physics while he himself was still at University.
The Professional Career of Andrey Kolmogorov
After graduating from university, Andrey Kolmogorov committed himself fully to the world of mathematics. He published academic papers at an astonishing rate. One of his most groundbreaking papers was his ‘General Theory of Measure and Probability Theory’. Kolmogorov introduced what are now known as the Kolmogorov Axioms, a series of axioms which became the basis of probability theory. In 1929, Kolmogorov was elected to the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics. He had completed a doctorate by this stage and became a professor at Moscow State university. These were just the first of many important roles for Kolmogorov and was later given positions of authority at The Mathematical Research Institute, the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics.
Foundations on the Theory of Probability
Kolmogorov published a book entitled Foundations of the Theory of Probability in 1933. This built on his previous work on probability theory and gained him the attention of the world’s foremost academics. Andrey travelled through Europe and spent time in Paris, forming many fruitful connections with other academics. He worked alongside such notable names as Richard Courant, Hermann Weyl, and Edmund Landau. His reputation as one of the world’s leading mathematical thinkers was secured. Andrey’s most well-known quote came from this publication, “The theory of probability as mathematical discipline can and should be developed from axioms in exactly the same way as Geometry and Algebra.”
Chapman-Kolmogorov Equations
Kolmogorov and British mathematician Sydney Chapman each developed a set of equations dealing with Markovian stochastic processes. These became a fundamental part of probability theory and the equations became known as the Chapman-Kolmogorov Equations, because both men developed the equations separately around the same time.
World War II
During the Second World War, Andrey Kolmogorov contributed significantly to the Russian military. His theoretical mathematics was put into practical use when he used his research on stochastic processes to work out the ideal configuration of barrage balloons. These barrage balloons were positioned to protect the city of Moscow from German bombing raids. Kolmogorov was keen throughout his career to put his theoretical work into practice, using his theories to make advances in various fields including problems of geology, turbulence, biology and even poetry. It was during the war, in 1942 around this time that Kolmogorov married Anna Egorova.
Andrey Kolmogorov and Teaching Reform
Kolmogorov was passionate about teaching. From the 1950s onwards, he produced a large volume of work aimed at educating people in mathematics, history, and philosophy. He wrote many articles for the Great Soviet Encyclopedia and continued to teach. His teaching was not limited to the advanced mathematicians who were keen to learn from the master; he took time to spend time teaching children too. He was very keen for the practice of teaching to be developed that new ways of engaging young people should be found. While he had no children with his wife, he felt passionately about the education of the younger generations and took an active role in establishing schools for those deemed to be especially gifted in mathematics and other subjects.
Honors and Legacy
Andrey Kolmogorov died in 1987. During his lifetime he received honorary doctorates from universities all over Europe. He was given many honors from the Russian government and made a member of numerous prestigious societies and academies across the world. Kolmogorov made an indelible mark on the academic world. While he best known for his work in the field of probability theory, he also had a lasting impact on logic, philosophy, algorithmic information theory, computational complexity, and mechanics. He also left behind a legacy of educational reform which had a profound impact on many generations of young people in the Soviet educational system.
