Jennifer Odom: The Beginning Of The End.
ON A CHILLY afternoon in rural Florida, a young girl steps off of her school bus & begins the walk home. She would only get a few yards before vanishing…THE STORY IS eerily familiar BUT it’s NOT about Jennifer Odom. This story takes place a full year before the world would hear about Jenny. This IS the horrific story of 17-year-old Carolyn Murray of Springhill, Florida. A CREATURE OF HABIT SHE…

Douglas Vandergraph continues his journey of teaching others how to accomplish their dreams and goals by explaining how Childhood Emotional Abuse can have lasting impacts on our lives. After a mental health worker reached out and asked Douglas to share the feelings of those who have been victims, this video was created. We need to have the courage to talk about this, PEOPLE MATTER!!! Douglas is putting himself out there as an example to others so they can see how anyone can take a chance, improve daily, and make a difference in the lives of others. What is it that you want in your life? Douglas can show you how to get it! This is a video series Douglas is completing in the hopes he can help just one person. Dr. Suess once said, "To the world, you may be one person, but to one person, you may be the world."
If you or a loved one is affected by domestic violence or emotional abuse and needs help, call The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

PSA On this account, we often discuss ways to make learning, working and living environments more accessible and inclusive. For some reason, this discussion often elicits defensive and dismissive statements from those who defend the neuronormative and ableist society we have built. I just can’t understand why this topic is not worth exploring, for some people. But if it’s not something you wish to think about at least don’t actively try to prevent others from reducing the ableism in our society. When we speak of the rights of children, we are not trying to take away the rights of parents and teachers. They are not two sides of a scale, where more to one means less to the other. When we defend the rights of children to learn in an inclusive environment this is not “teacher bashing.” When we defend a child’s right to a safe and loving home, we are not “mom-shaming.” We cannot change what we don’t acknowledge. Also, from my perspective, we ARE defending the rights of parents and teachers to work and live a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Parents and teachers who agree with our philosophies, find our page supportive of a journey that they often feel alone on. Parenting and teaching from a child-led perspective is easier and more rewarding than always trying to force kids not to be kids. It’s the same with inclusiveness. When we work towards more inclusive environments for everyone, everyone feels a greater sense of belonging. We’re not going to wave a wand and make the whole world, loving, accepting and inclusive but for some of us it’s important to try. So please stop getting in our way and wasting our time with arguments about the “why?” If you do not understand why inclusive learning, living and working spaces are important, at least don’t sabotage others attempts to make society a little more comfortable, for everyone. Recently, I attended the PEACE STARTS WITH ME World Peace Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. A local host family invited me to be a guest in their home at the end of the second day. Others were from Africa, Europe, Indonesia, and the U. S. During dinner, people asked me about my work. I spoke of helping hurting women heal from the indignity of sexual violence while children. Jaws dropped and mouths opened affirming the experience was present at the table. After dinner, women spoke to me privately. Sexual Violence is an epidemic (local disease) and a pandemic (global disease) affecting women at every age and stage. My work, Let’s Talk About Love helps hurting women heal and also prepares women to move forward to experience loving and productive relationships. I want to put LET’S TALK ABOUT LOVE into the hands of 1,000 WOMEN over the next quarter of July, August and September 2019. For every woman we help heal, the tribe that helps hurting people heal grows. absolutely ❤️ this thought. #Repost @finallyfamilyhomes with @get_repost ・・・ The trauma of going through foster care and never finding a family can fill a child with heartbreak, a sense of rejection, and hopelessness... Why Learn Through Play?
First off, it is a common misconception to think that children are expected to sit down and learn their ABC’s and 123′s, read, write, do math all BEFORE kindergarten. Not sure where this all stems from, but I always tell families, that is what KINDERGARTEN and grade-school is for. As a pre-k teacher, it is my job to make sure they are developing the skills to be ABLE to learn in a kindergarten/grade-school setting. Children need to learn how to self regulate, problem solve, focus & engage, persevere through challenges, be confident in trying, ask questions, reflect, SOCIAL SKILLS and overall be independent. Not only that, children need to develop certain muscles, fine and gross motor muscles, to even hold a pencil or cut with scissors correctly, button, zip, tie shoes, etc. Without these skills, how can we expect children to learn more difficult subjects if they can’t sit still, concentrate, work with peers on projects, or calm themselves down without a teacher to hold their hand? (As i am typing this right now, I am watching “girls incarcerated, young and locked up” on netflix and it is a very good example of what happens to children who do not fully develop these important life skills. Side-note, it is an entertaining show.)
Allowing a generous chunk of free play will help develop these skills in a very organic and relevant way for children. When something is personal or relevant to them, the information is internalized and learned much faster. Free play invites curiosity, exploration, experimenting, making predictions, finding conclusions. It creates the opportunity for cooperative play, conflict-resolution, problem solving, thus developing social skills and the ability to recognize emotions, creating situations to develop self regulation and moral sense. It isn’t that ABC’s and 123′s are NOT being taught in class, rather it is being learned organically on their own terms through play. I am there to observe, and scaffold their learning, constantly asking them open ended questions to help them think, reflect and come to their own answers. That being said, I try to turn situations into a learning experience any chance I get and reinforce their knowledge of numbers, counting, simple math, letter and phonetic recognition, reading etc.
Believe it or not, I do have one student who can legitimately read whole books to me. Its funny because I can’t hide things by spelling words out to teachers because he can sound out the letters and figure out what I am saying. He can also tell when I skip words or sentences in a book and does not let me off the hook! It is amazing to see their knowledge grow significantly when they are in control of their learning and because of that, they grow their self confidence and feel competent. This is what I would hope to foster in every child I work with before they move on to kindergarten.
There are so many more beneficial factors to free play and I encourage you to look further into it to find out more!

THE DEAD SPEAK
YES THEY DO! The thing is, we don’t always hear them because we’re not paying attention. AND sometimes we hear the message BUT it’s the messenger that we don’t want to hear from. AND SOMETIMES THAT MESSENGER FOLLOWS YOU HOME… February 2020 EVERY TRIP TO the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys has been eventful in some way, shape OR form. There’s always some knew find, whether it be an old dorm that…

Sometimes we forget that kids have their bad days too and really just need a big hug. They might not have the same stressors we do, but they can get stressed out, nonetheless. What’s more is they don’t have the skills or brain development to deal with it like adults do. It’s our job to teach and show them how to cope with big feelings. #40daysofECE #handlettering #childadvocate

Posted this on my personal page last year but thought I would share with all my new friends, so you can get a glimpse into my real life: . Since age 2, my middle son Everett has struggled at bedtime. When he started school, the behavioural issues began. This boy can be the sweetest most loving child, but can turn into demon mode at the snap of your fingers. He is extremely intelligent and is exceling academically. We have tried to put the right supports in place: we have tried everything from sleep training, naturopath, doctor, diet change, learning centers, extracurriculars, essential oils, requesting an IEP at school... the list goes on. We finally got an appointment with a psychiatrist who diagnosed him with ADHD, but he wanted to do a sleep study too. We were referred to the Youthdale child and adolescent Sleep Centre in Toronto. It took 5 hours to do what should have taken 20 minutes, 1 hour of complete hell that left me physically in pain and at the time emotionally distraught. His anxiety was severe and even after 2 weeks of preparing him for this, it didn't go smoothly like I had hoped. Once we finally got him hooked up it was 3 hours past his bedtime but he ended up being a trooper and I am so proud of him. We spent the next day napping every 2 hours but got to leave a couple hours early which was nice. After all that, we found out they found nothing out of the ordinary. . I often feel like a bad mom because of the amount I work, but I am doing my best and loving my boys the best way I can, and I know they feel my love. . Advice for any parents who feel like they are just at their wits end and don't know what to do, or feeling like they aren't being a good parent - just keep searching for answers. Be your child's advocate bc no one else will. And if you need to vent - shoot me a DM. I get it. The mom guilt is real. . . . #sleepproblems #childpsychiatrist #adhd #momofboys #boymom #intelligentchildren #boys #hyperactive #anxiety #childadvocate #parentlove #momguilt #family #children #bedtime #routine (at Toronto, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-KET0wAR67/?igshid=1ab9oer9z27ld

January is #NationalMentoring month. Happy 21st Birthday to my mentee/lil Sis Ayonna! 🥂 I can’t believe we met when you were almost 11 and now you’re 21! 👏🏽I urge everyone to #mentor a younger person! It is by far one of the most rewarding accomplishments of my life to see Ayonna grow into this #unaplogetic young woman.
