SLIDE 2: BASIC INFORMATION pt. 1

FULL NAME: AMON

in GALERE those who are not of nobility literally do not have surnames. they’re not considered important enough to have them.

ie: erecia, terian, asahel, tamhas, vira, miss. shanin, knox, etc. none of these characters have surnames

HOWEVER, amon has a secret identity — or could’ve had one, its complicated — that many of these non-noble characters don’t know about:

after amon was attacked by the gang THE KEYS and his mother was killed, he was found and saved by a noble family: lord and lady farrah. unable to have children themselves, the two wanted to adopt the young boy, despite his many scars from the attack, to serve as their heir.

there are 2 alternate universe aus where amon does stay with the farrah’s and becomes their heir ⟶ the role swap au & the fiance au.

however, in canon, amon runs away from them after he heals at about 12 years old and returns to the slums of halifax, which are his home.

knox wants to focus lock efforts on keeping the slums safe for everyone who lives there. however, amon knows that they will never be safe if the keys continue to stalk their streets at night. he wants to cut the head off of the proverbial snake—and take out their leader once and for all!

the only problem? well. 

the leader of the keys is THE KEEPER.

there are 2 photos of amon to display how he looks. the first is a close up shot of amon--he has short cropped hair in a messy style, and sweeps on the left side over his brow bone. he has a few pinkish colored scars that criss cross his neck and he is making a smarmy expression. the second photo is a full body (sans feet) shot of amon bloodied and covered in bandages. the scars are revealed to cover most of his upper torso and one of his eyes is blackened.

SLIDE 6: SCARS

as a child, amon and his mother were attacked by keys; leaving him both an orphan and on the brink of death. miraculously (and with medical intervention) amon survived, but the attack left a mark on him—mentally and physically. 

to this day, amon hasn’t said what exactly the keys did to him to leave such marks. but nearly every available surface of his skin, including his genitals has some form of scarring. the worst scars are on his back. 

he is somewhat self conscious about them only because people can become uncomfortable about them. 

there is a photo of the backside of amon that showcases the scars on his back. the largest is one at the near center that goes from the top of his shoulder blades crossing diagonally down to his tailbone.

SLIDE 7: IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS

KNOX ⟶ as mentioned, knox is like a father figure to amon and he was the one who took him in once he returned to the slums after the brief period he lived with the farrah’s. while knox is wise and caring, he is critical of amon’s fight now, questions later approach, and tends to reproach him for causing ‘unnecessary drama’. despite this, he knows amon has the slums and the gang’s best interest at heart, and the two of them never stay mad at each other for long. knox is also willing to help in SOME of amon’s exploits (not all)

ERECIA ⟶ amon’s best friend and right hand man, the two have known each other since they were extremely small, and rekindled their friendship after they both experienced personal tragedy (erecia lost her father, and amon lost his mother/almost died/left the slums/came back). while amon is more verbally affectionate and likes to deflect his inner mind, erecia is someone who (to his chagrin) knows him very, very well. to the point that she is genuinely surprised at how enraptured amon has become with hya. she worries about him.

SLIDE 8: EXPLAINING THE OBSESSION WITH HYACINTHUS SHRAPNEL

this is extremely difficult to explain because in a number of ways, amon doesn’t really understand it either. he didn’t think much of hya at first; and at first, definitely only saw him as a means (the wife of the keeper) to an end (killing the keeper).

its the perfect storm of fucking around and finding out—not that i can blame him. he’s fucked hundreds of people without catching feelings; why should a pompous little lord be different? 

it’s more than just the fact that he can get a rise out of hya as amon can get a rise out of most people if he tries hard enough. it’s more than the fact that he thinks hya is attractive (and he does, immensely so) — somehow, hya is the perfect storm of a stubborn ass prick that fires all of amon’s dog-like synapses. 

he’s extremely lucky that hya feels the same about him tbh, even if its unsaid. idk. they’re made for each other.

The Count of Monte Cristo 2024

I said I was going to make a post on this, so *gestures here*.

As a film it is truly amazing, beautiful cinematography, it's worth watching just for how pretty it is. Nice costumes, and the musical score is good too. Pierre Niney is brilliant as the titular hero. As an adaptation, though, it doesn't quite deliver. Much better than the 2002 film, but that means the total sum of pick any number times zero.

Spoilers under the cut.

The whole film takes place in France (Marseille and Paris), and apart from Edmond finding the treasure on the Monte Cristo island, we don't set a foot in Italy. (Side note, he throws a torch into a hole, which, upon landing, reveals the treasure, but it's never shown how he actually managed to get down there to obtain it.)

Fernand is once again Edmond's friend. He is de Morcerf from birth and lives in a nice mansion; old Dantes is employed as a servant. This makes Mercedes noble too.

There's no Noirtier, instead Villefort has a Bonapartist sister, Angele. And you know what, I actually liked this change. In the scene where she comes to Villefort's house, she looks really badass, a bit like Anne Bonny, the pirate queen. Villefort is not getting married, but he has a mistress, whose name is Victoria and who is pregnant (and who later becomes Madame Danglars).

At the beginning of the film, Edmond saves Angele from drowning. Angele has the compromising letter on her, which is seized by Danglars, at this time the captain of the ship. When Morrel hears Danglars would have let a woman drown, the strips him of captaincy and appoints Edmond as a captain. It's the only scene we see Morrel in, and we see a little Maximilien, who is his grandson here, however, Maximilien never shows up again. It would have been better had they not bothered with him in the first place, it's more upsetting to see him wasted than not to see him at all.

Pierfrancesco Favino is so good as abbe Faria. It was neat of them to cast an actual Italian to play the role. He looks the part, also he's the right type of mad (after so many years at Chateau d'If, though I think Faria was always a bit mad, in a mad scholar way). The scene where they first meet, Edmond falls into his arms, laughing and crying at the same time and it's honestly so emotional. Brilliant acting.

Faria, like in the 2002 film, dies in a cave in, but I think that's actually a better choice for a film, easier to do than a lengthy explaining of an obscure illness.

After his escape, Edmond simply walks onto a dry land, stealing a shirt from a washing line in the process. The smugglers don't appear in the film. Neither do the brigands, for that matter. (In fact, no Italian characters made it.)

I will say this in favour of the film, all three antagonists are well developed. Villefort seems to have married later, but his wife takes no part in the story. One of the best scenes was the dinner party at the house in Auteil, where the count tells the story of the buried baby. Poor Madame Danglars is close to breaking down and Villefort is sweating from head to toe. It feels truly gothic.

Caderousse is in the film, he was the quartermaster of the ship. Edmond goes to him first and gives him the gem; later he is shown to lead a group of bandits? or robbers?, but nothing more is shown of him and I'm not sure what the writers were trying to do with him.

Eugenie appears very little only, but she does appear and is a lesbian (though her gf is called Suzanne, not Louise).

They worked in the count's disguises; abbe Busoni appears, so does Lord Halifax, who I take is supposed to be Lord Wilmore. (The scene with Lord Halifax is really funny.) The count uses actual masks for his disguises. (He uses a mask for his Monte Cristo persona as well. I wish he didn't.)

Lord Halifax publishes a tabloid in France, reporting the fake news of Danglars's ships being lost, which is how he eventually gets him.

The above mentioned Angele is the one who digs up and saves Villefort and Victoria's baby. This was a change I also liked, personally, it avoids some of the coincidences from the book. Poor Angele doesn't meet a nice end, but the count visits her on the death bed where she tells him the story. He then goes and gets the baby, now a young man named Andre and takes him under his wing. (This is the scene from the trailer, where Andre asks "who are you" and the count, answers "I am the count of Monte Cristo", it's the first time we hear him use this title.) Andre is to help the count carry out his revenge, adopting the identity of Andrea Cavalcanti.

Haydee and Andrea plot together with the count, in a heist-like fashion. It's cool and all that, however it's too major of a change for me to be able to just accept it. Over the years, I have become more relaxed about book to screen adaptations, but there are limits. This is one of them. It goes against everything the count is. It's like Jacopo in the 2002 movie, fun to watch, but the count doesn't do friends. He works on his own and doesn't rely on anyone else. That's one thing.

Another thing is: Albert. I hated the casting choice. Nothing against the actor, he was just not a good pick for Albert. He looks like a "softboi" if I get the label right, tall and thin and has blond angelic curls and looks like he would get knocked down by a stronger wind. That's not Albert. Nothing about him screams hold-my-beer-while-I-do-something-stupid himbo. They may as well have cast Timothee Chalamet (I mean, he's part French, isn't he? And at least has dark hair.) Then--and I knew this from the reviews so thankfully was prepared--the count makes Haydee seduce Albert, which she does, and then she falls for him for real. Like, okay, I think it's an idea worth exploring (falling in love with a son of the man who betrayed your father, which resulted in you being sold into slavery), but it needs proper time and effort to develop. It's got to either be another story of its own, or be a part of limited series. It looks like the screenwriters, giving Maximilien and Valentine the chop, still wanted their star-crossed lovers, so they did Haydee x Albert instead. I think some of Albert's lines were taken from Maximilien in the book. And we're just expected to believe that Haydee has fallen in love with Fernand's son, without her showing any conflict over her feelings. A walking dry white slice of bread of a man, who do you think Haydee is, Katniss fucking Everdeen? I'd sooner buy that she was in love with Andrea. She is certainly fond of him and is devastated by his death--he gets shot after stabbing Villefort.

Haydee is also angry at Edmond when Albert challenges him to a duel. Why, I can't answer--it was Albert who threw the glove. The duel does go ahead, though the night before, Mercedes comes to Edmond to plead for her son's life, and says the same line as in the book ("Edmond, you will not kill my son."). Edmond shoots away from Albert on purpose, then Albert raises his gun and stars crying. It was not shown exactly whether he fired or not, but obvs they both survived. The real Albert would not hesitate to shoot. Like I said, a complete milksop.

So anyway, Haydee and Albert run away together, with the count's blessing, Mercedes leaves Fernand and Fernand comes to confront Edmond and they have a sword fight. Haydee doesn't even get to accuse him!

The film ends with Edmond sailing away on his own, and Mercedes reading his letter. Although the letter includes the words "wait and hope", it doesn't quite land the same. The phrase was never used in the film previously.

It's open to interpretation whether they get together later or not.

I wonder if they made Mercedes a noblewoman bc they wanted to give her a nicer ending. She has a stronger network to fall back on after everything goes down. But idk, honestly, I might be wrong. I don't really care, tbh. I care more about the fact that abbe Faria was completely forgotten after Edmond found the treasure.

One last tidbit: there is a guard? a butler? working for the count, who looks a bit sinister (in a good way!) and I thought it was maybe their version of Ali. (I think he may have been of North African origin, though I might have got it wrong and will get in trouble now.) But the count called him Jacopo.

So yeah, that is that.

Retired N.S. firefighter calls for better promotion of program designed to prevent wildfire destruction

Retired Halifax firefighter Paul Irving fought his share of fires over 34 years, including wildfires.

Now, in the aftermath of Nova Scotia’s destructive forest fires in both Halifax and Shelburne counties, he's fighting for awareness.

“If you ask 100 people, what FireSmart is, or what they can do or anything like that,” he says, “I'd be surprised if you got one that even understood the concept."

Irving blames provincial and municipal governments for dropping the ball.

Almost 20 years ago, Irving wrote a report for Halifax Fire on the benefits of FireSmart – a national education program, which offers advice on how to protect properties from the ravages of wildfire.

His report, entitled, “FireSmart and HRM” explained the often devastating effects of “Wildland Urban Interface” fires — in areas where forests or trees meet community buildings.

“Most of the major wildland fires,” he wrote, “are stopped by one of two things: a change in weather or running out of fuel. Since we can’t change the weather, the strategy that is used for many wildfires is to address the fuel.”

In his report, Irving recommended carrying FireSmart “into a lifestyle,” for fire departments, homeowners, and developers.

But he says officials didn’t give the program the attention he feels it deserved at the time, or since.

“I think it was the political will wasn't there, to go through and to promote this,” he says, “because there's a lot of ramifications for the municipality, there's a lot of things you have to do, developers wouldn't like it.”

The initiative offers advice to homeowners on how to assess the wildfire risk of their properties and offers solutions to mitigate or even prevent wildfire damage.

Tips include choosing wildfire-resistant building materials and foliage and keeping a 1.5-metre “non-combustible zone” around a home and deck.

For builders and municipalities, it recommends measures such as designing service roads to allow for both outgoing community evacuation and incoming emergency vehicles.

It also advocates for the inclusion of greenbelts in communities to act as firebreaks.

Irving says many of the principles are used by firefighters to assess which properties they can actively try to save and which ones are unsafe to do so.

“If a wildfire is coming towards the area a home is in, one of the things (firefighters) have to do, is triage,” he says, “An expert will look at the area surrounding your home, and if it has enough ‘defensible space’ then we can, not always, but we can make an effort to save your home.”

“If it’s not defensible … we cannot put a crew there because it’s too dangerous to put them there,” he explains.

In British Columbia, 100 neighbourhoods were certified as “FireSmart” as of 2019

In Nova Scotia, which signed on in 2018, there are two “FireSmart” communities: Bear River and Chateau Village.

According to the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, 40 communities have engaged with the program in that time. Thirteen of those are in the Halifax area.

Thursday, the minister in charge of the department said more municipalities have recently reached out to inquire about the program.

“The unfortunate circumstances around the last few weeks have highlighted these conversations, and we're very willing to have those conversations,” said Tory Rushton. “It certainly should be a program that every municipality looks at … and if it’s a resources matter, then certainly by all means as minister, I’ll talk to the team and see where we need to put resources.”

Anyone who wants a FireSmart assessment can go to their provincial FireSmart page for information. In the Halifax area, a request form is found on the website for Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency.

CTV asked the city of Halifax how many assessments it has done, but didn’t receive a response by end of the day Thursday.

Hello yes how did Amon even become a butler in the first place? Did he go into butlering on purpose or did he want to be a pilot in kindergarten?

HAHA so funny you should ask this because 100% not at all!! amon literally became a butler because his main goal is to kill the keeper (because the keeper controls the keys; which is a gang that essentially preys on the entire lower class population of the slums of halifax for Reasons and said gang is the reason that amon's mother is dead - they killed her - and why he has so many scars all over his body). the gang that amon is apart of himself (the locks) is sort of a defacto militia to protect the slums of halifax (because the government sure as shit ain't doing anything; understandable so because galere in itself, hell even in the name because galere in french slang is:

so YEAH LMAO. but its mostly because the keeper & the rest of the chamber are the main overseers of society, even above the reagent and parliament and all that shit lmao. so. the rich just kind of turn a blind eye to a lot of stuff. paramour's country is like Super Shallow in general lmao).

amon's boss/father figure, knox, is very much like i don't want to make waves, this is how things are and though i don't like it the safety of the people here is more important than anything else. so he focuses a lot of the gang's resources on protecting the slums and all that shit. amon however is like, this shit is gonna go on forever and no one will ever be safe unless we just get rid of who's in charge of the keys. and after several years of digging on his own he discovered that the keeper is in charge of the keys and so he's literally of the "cut the head off the snake" mentality.

when there was an opening at the chateau for new manservants, he literally just jumped at the opportunity because that would put him in closer proximity to his enemy.... or so he thought. realistically literally none of the servants ever even see the keeper at all and so after 2-3 years of this he was at a total loss... until hya got married to the keeper. and he ended up unintentionally catching hya's eye (in the sense that the two of them started bickering like fucking immediately and he was like wait. is there chemistry here? i can use that--)

this is quite a long explanation to say that tl;dr no amon didn't go to school for this shit he is a nefarious man with a nefarious purpose.

in terms of what he wanted to be growing up, i actually don't know. i don't think there was anything in particular that he thought about wanting to be because his life was essentially fucked over from so young. even in the role swap aus where amon is the one with money or has money along with hya, he's not really a man with like "goals" or like "things he wants to do". he does enjoy fighting, so perhaps a professional in that regard?

When I wrote my last post we were newly in France with the 1st set of closures put in place (i.e. non-essential shops and business closed), but with the local elections set to go ahead the following day.  We felt fairly confident that our plan of making it to a site in the South of France and sitting out any further measures, should they occur, was still achievable…

Obviously this isn’t what happened!  However, it was a couple of days before this became clear – and it was rather sudden!

So I thought I’d give you a whistle-stop summary of our whole trip in just the 1 post!  So here goes…

Days 1 & 2:  Friday 13th & Saturday 14th March 2020 (perhaps there was a clue here?)

We arrived in Dieppe aboard a pretty empty ferry after a slightly bumpy crossing, and shared the Aire with a number of other vans (mostly French), before taking a walk around Dieppe (already socially distancing ourselves) and then spending a 2nd night in the same Aire.  (I wrote a post covering this already – click on the link above)

Day 3: Sunday 15th March 2020

We made the decision to use proper sites rather than free aires ‘just in case’, thinking that we would be able to stop on a site once we were there, and also to go further than we had originally planned.  So I looked through the trusty ACSI book and found a site in Sully sur Loire, about 100 miles south of Paris, Camping le Jardin de Sully  (You’ll be able to see my review here when I’ve written it!)

For us this was a long journey being 200 miles as we normally aim for under 100 miles.  Little did we know at this point that we would be driving almost 900 miles in total in the next 5 days before we made it home…

The campsite was lovely, and pretty empty, although there was another English couple in their caravan who were heading home via the tunnel because they had medical appointments and wanted to ensure they got home for them.

The French were out and about in droves taking walks along the river, and even in the evening the youngsters were congregating in their cars in car parks as they couldn’t go to cafes and bars.  We know this as we went out for a walk in the evening once, or so we thought, everyone else had gone home!  We were able to avoid these groups and walked for a few miles, crossing the bridge and finding the chateau (and the town Aire) and several closed bars and restaurants.  It looks like a lovely little town and we have no doubt that we will one day return to explore the area by cycle (the cycle path system is very good)

Day 4: Monday 16th March 2020

We had been thinking of staying here for a 2nd night, but in the end decided to crack on further South.  On checking out I told the lady what we were hoping to do – in hindsight it would have been nice if she’d mentioned that President Macron was due to address the nation that evening with an important announcement.  But she didn’t, and we had contacted 2 campsites that both said they were fully open… So we headed off further South.

225 miles further south to be precise to Vielle Brioude, south of Clermont Ferrand and Issoire.  We chose to take the toll motorway this time, as we were going so far.  Then I forgot to press the button when paying to explain that we were a camping car (the rate will be changed if you do this).   In my defence I was intent on seeing if my Halifax Clarity card would work this time (as it didn’t the previous day when we used a short section of toll, and I’d had to use my debit card); and I just completely forgot…  It probably cost us about 15Euros, maybe 20…   I won’t forget again!

Just before our destination we stopped at an Intermarch to get some essentials, and top up with fuel.  The supermarket was very busy with several items unobtainable, but we managed to get everything that we needed, and set off again to find the campsite.

A couple of wrong turns and slightly unsuitable roads later we found it, Camping de la Bageasse, which looked much nicer in the photos than in reality!!

We were the only unit there (although there were a couple of chalets in use), and once we’d chosen our spot and found electricity that worked (by now our fridge had stopped working on gas), we settled down for the evening.

In the evening the lady from reception came to see us to explain that the campsite was possibly to close in the morning after the president’s address.  Instead of waiting we spent the evening trying to book a ferry home.  We had problems with booking the DFDS ferry from Dieppe, and thought that we’d managed it, only for the site to crash on us again.  So we booked a ferry into Portsmouth on Brittany (at an extra £100).  In the morning though I had an e-mail from DFDS confirming our booking!

Thankfully Brittany Ferries were brilliant and cancelled our booking with an immediate full refund.  The receptionist also confirmed that the site was indeed closing and anybody on it being asked to leave.

Day 5: Tuesday 17th March 2020 (midday lockdown)

Approximately 425 miles to go, but 2 days to do this (our ferry was Thursday at 05.30am – changed from 6.30pm Wednesday foc by DFDS Ferries).

We chose to avoid the toll motorway this time as we had a bit of time.  But it did seem to take forever; so we ended up doing the last 30 miles or so on the toll; I remember to press the button this time and saved 9 Euros.  We were stopped once, just after midday, at a routine checkpoint on a roundabout – a show of our ferry booking and my ‘nous allons au bateau pour aller chez nous’ did the trick, and we were soon on our way with a smile and a ‘bonne route’.

We were then held up driving through a small town where we had to pull into a car park.  There were 2 other British vans in there with us.  A French lady also pulled up and started talking to me – I did pretty well, in that we sort of understood each other and she told me what had happened (sadly a little boy had run out into the road and been knocked over), but she just kept moving closer and closer to me!  In the end I had to run into the van saying my tea was getting cold!  (nb: I don’t understand why the police in France need to carry massive guns when attending a traffic incident in a small rural town though..)

I’d found a likely overnight stop in Mery sur Cher, west of Vierzon, and we were so happy when we made it there.  Absolutely perfect spot behind the village car park, but with a toilet, electricity, security lights and little individual pitches as well as the normal amenities.  The barrier had been removed meaning it was all free as well (although we would happily have paid).  I hadn’t been so happy in days!

Day 6: Wednesday 18th March

The traffic increased as we made our way further north, although eerily quiet as we drove through Orleans.  Driving past Chartres I was, again, amazed at the size of the cathedral – you can see it from miles away and I must see it in reality 1 day!

From Rouen the traffic really picked up, and once in Dieppe we managed to get a little lost as we had never approached from this direction before 😦  This time we were 1 of only 3 vans in the Aire – we think most people turned up late and waited in line at the port.

Day 7: Thursday 19th March 2020

An early start (4.15am) to catch the 5.30am ferry.  We were pretty much at the back of the queue (see main photo – which doesn’t really show just how many motorhomes there were).

An uneventful journey home.  2 members of staff were operating the coffee machine for everybody as you got on (free), but there was no food being served.

All in all we were pretty happy to get home, although obviously absolutely gutted that all we had achieved in our week away was 2 fairly long walks and over 900 miles driving…

If things improve in the next couple of months however we will head off again, even if it’s only for a few weeks.

Stay safe everyone – and remember, this too shall pass and normal life will resume.  Maybe at that point we’ll all be a little more grateful for our normal freedoms 🙂

Which cities do you think could survive the apocalypse

not toronto, its gone, theres no more toronto. it was a snow based apocalypse. they’re done. it was nice but now there is anarchy because now the cn tower can no longer function as the Lightning Rod of All of Canada’s hatred. Lucas Wilson, thankfully, was rescued last minute by his real alien parents from outer space who knew this whole kerfuffle was coming; he managed to escape the planet with several Canadian Tire bills, some roll up the rim tabs he had been saving for a special occasion, miscellaneous paperclips and coffee mugs stolen from the office, a lifesize poster of himself, his pet raccoon named chip, and the mythical chalice of lord stanley.

some intrepid saskatchewanians band together, Stoon and Regina set aside their differences and build a Roughriders themed bunker which they call Diefenbunker 2.0 and they return to a socialist, agriculture based economy while stockpiling and fiercely guarding their potash. Anyone who tries to breach the perimeter will be spotted 3 days away and football tackled to the ground. The last haven of universal healthcare is here, but only if you cheer for the right team.

Winnipeg, having learned nothing from the Great Floods of the 1950s and the 1990s, drifts away. Selkirk thrives (and by thriving i mean there seem to be still people there who haven’t been flooded out, so compared to winnipeg it is thriving.) Honestly, people are still questioning why Winnipeg was even where it was in the first place. After a while she stops drifting, hikes inland for a bit, and resettles somewhere completely different. With territories in dispute, she once again claims Rat Portage for the non-existent political entity of Manitoba just ‘cause.

Halifax quickly takes advantage of their archaic battle fortresses and offers shelter to all Maritime provinces- sadly the latest shipment of PEI potatoes  is trapped in ice and everyone starves because of the crap agricultural land around Halifax. There are only so many blueberries to go around and the competition for lobster remains fierce. Meanwhile, St. John’s presumably sits on the edge of the rock waiting, watching for the cod to be replenished. Also there’s probably a bad snowstorm but they don’t notice even though its like july or something.

Quebec City is well prepared, perhaps surprisingly, for the apocalypse. Despite their abundance of well built log shelters, buff lumberjacks, and carefully guarded supplies of maple syrup (because they’re not letting That happen again), something is amiss. Preparations are made to turn the Chateau Frontenac into a shelter for refugees from Montreal but sadly Samuel was too late to save him- the island sunk into the St Lawrence like Atlantis because no one could agree on the language laws required to efficiently evacuate. The sandbags required for the oncoming flood had also been mysteriously destroyed only days prior, and the budget for the evacuation - mysteriously 3 times the specified amount - disappeared with a certain number of crime families. A funeral was held for Etienne M. Maisonneuve at what was estimated to be the former site of the Bell Centre. Efforts were made to find Lord Stanley’s cup for the event, but in vain.

There is a forecast in Vancouver and Victoria for high winds, high tides, and 20 cm of snow. No one survives. Victoria laughs with her dying breath- she sprawls protectively over her prized begonias and english roses, dead deer surrounding the perimeter of her garden. It begins to snow. Vancouver, contemplating having to live on the other side of the mountains, concludes falling into the ocean is preferable.

Calgary is a desolate wasteland. Their new arena, finally coerced out of tax payers by like 5 separate billionaires, drifts down the engorged Bow river past the sagging yet noble remains of the Saddledome. While the downtown core is a ghost town, it’s not really that surprising because the entire population pretty much started abandoning it in droves in like 2015 when oil crashed so really it was only a matter of time - Calvin B. McCall did what he does best in an economic crisis and had already made tracks to mooch off the economic diversity of his rival to the north…

Stumbling onto main street Yellowknife, the stranger falls into a local coffee shop and is brought to his feet by his bolo-tied pardner slash nemesis. He finds Whitehorse and Iqaluit having brunch with their host, and the three blink in mild shock at the poor condition the hiker is in. “Oh, hey Ed, hi Cal, grab a chair.” Yellowknife waves them over. 

“Terrible, it’s absolutely terrible.” Ed’s fingers shake around his coffee, the Gateway to the North clearly troubled by something. “Zombies in West Ed, political factions dividing the legislature grounds, C-connor…” his voice breaks. Calvin leans over for a comforting if awkward side hug.

“It’s over now,” Whitehorse makes every attempt not to roll her eyes. “Southern politics are overrated, just turn off the news and you won’t have to think about them anymore.”
