Do the cities of Westeros pay their taxes to the Iron Throne directly and skip their lords paramount? Asking because I see that the Hand of the King controls tariffs for King's Landing, Oldtown and Lannisport. So would the Hightowers not pay the Tyrells?

It's a bit complicated, because we're talking about different sets of taxes. So on the one hand there are port taxes - tariffs, luxury taxes, customs, tolls, harbor fees, etc. - that are royal taxes, set by the King and the Small Council, and collected by the customs officers appointed by the Iron Throne. (This changes during the War of Five Kings, where the canny Wyman Manderly replaces them and the royal mint officials with men loyal to the North and House Manderly.)

On the other hand, there are the normal feudal taxes - land taxes, property taxes, inheritance taxes, income taxes, etc. - that would normally be paid to the local feudal lord, and then a portion would be sent to the Lord Paramount, and then the Lord Paramount would send a portion to the King.

Of all the crimes this map, designed and intended to start fights, committed, "New Orleans and Chicago share a water connection" is actually …well it's basically true, and I'm going to take you down fucking river about it.

So.

The Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, and Ohio rivers, right? The watersheds of the central continent? From waaaaaay up in Minnesota, where huh hmm uhh a lot of French names up there; from Montana; from the Des Plaines river, which runs from Wisconsin on down; and from Pennsylfuckingvania across to the south of Illinois; all converging there at the bottom and becoming subsumed into the Mighty Mississippi, which goes where? Where does it go?

Well! It goes all the way down to the delta and becomes the abiding characteristic of the Crescent City herself, New Orleans. And it hits a lot of cities on the way, cities that wouldn't be there if not for the river.

What do all these regions all that water goes through have in common? Suspiciously French placenames, evidence of Catholicism present or historic (we see you, north central Indiana), Black communities historic or ongoing, and good music. And why?

The fuckin Louisiana Purchase. New France. And following that?

River trade, motherfuckers.

And then? Why, the great migration of course. If you can go up and downriver with goods-- materiel upriver, finished goods downriver, hogs upriver, bacon downriver, etc-- you can use that same path if not the river itself (train and vehicle transport having taken on most of the river traffic by then) to move people. And the people had been doing it the whole time! Parish to parish, county to county, state to state, individuals and families alike had spread along the waterway, creating a river of towns and settlements that were strung together with the common thread of that water and the culture that flowed along with it.

Chicago and New Orleans are in fact on the same coast, but it's a riverbank. And it's cultural; it's Acadian, it's American, it's Black. It is all three at once. They are both port cities linked by one water route, though Chicago faces the lake and New Orleans the ocean: they use the same river (come down to it) to feed out through their port. So yeah actually.

OP was doing this to be flippant and get a reaction, but however unintentionally, in this instance he's right.

According to you new Orleans and Chicago are on the same coast.

Ik it's too late to make acc alive. I was dead for too long time. But idc, I randomly drew Herc and I'm happy, enjoying life! modern au where jay was a military kid. lived on a military base when she was younger, in jrotc all through out school, constantly moving bc her dad was placed somewhere new, practicing shooting and working out, on track to go right into the military when she graduated highschool, etc -- only to apply to college and ditch her military plans and start a new life from herself away from that. or maybe she was planning to be an engineer for the military and going to college for that, but after one semester, she changed majors or dropped out. all with the protest of her dad of course as she's unemployed and has no clue what the fuck she's gonna do with her life now that her whole future crumbled after she realized she doesn't want this future she's been set up for for the past 18 years
