Despite [S. Weir] Mitchell's praise for Jacobi, he did not approve of women doctors. Mitchell publicized his disapproval in a fictional series titled "Characteristics," which featured a physician who discouraged a young woman from pursuing medicine on the basis that the profession made women masculine and stripped them of all their feminine qualities. Jacobi wrote to Mitchell in protest and chastised him for attributing hysteria to healthy women studying medicine. She asked: "Do you not almost inevitably get into the habit of extending to the whole sex the estimate which you justly form of the multitudes of them which absorb your professional attention?" She then defended women physicians and lamented their limited opportunities for work. For Jacobi, challenging Mitchell was a matter of correcting "bad science,' claiming credit for her work, and contesting his position on the "woman question."
Jacobi's long-term frustrations with Mitchell informed her treatment of his most famous patient, Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Gilman's story The Yellow Wallpaper (1892) has become a feminist allegory and a treatise against the problems of nineteenth-century medical practice. Gilman's novella reflected her own experience under Mitchell's care and described the road to insanity traveled by a woman undergoing the rest cure. Confined to her room and deprived of stimulation, including talking, reading, and writing, the narrator is drawn deeper into mental illness by her seclusion and what she considers the sinister patterns of the yellow wallpaper that surround her. While Mitchell's name has become synonymous with the rest cure, Gilman's name has become associated with protest against it. Her indictment of medical men like Mitchell stands in opposition to her reverence of women physicians. Whether as fictional characters or real practitioners, women doctors were heroic feminist figures in Gilman's writing and personal life. In many ways, Jacobi was a more than logical choice to take over as Gilman's physician.
In 1901, Jacobi offered to treat Gilman for her "brain trouble," years after she fled the care of S. Weir Mitchell and almost a decade after the publication of The Yellow Wallpaper: In December of that year, Gilman noted in her diary, "Call on Dr. Jacobi & state my case. She is to undertake it—her own proposition." Jacobi was eager to help Gilman because this was no ordinary case; her treatment had symbolic power, considering her very public critique of Mitchell and the rest cure. They were also "interested in the same things, both medically and politically, sharing deep concerns about the mental health of American women and the social restrictions that caused and exacerbated them." They both operated professionally from feminist standpoints, and believed in the power of work to liberate women from economic dependency on men. Influenced by socialism, they shared an organic view of society, seeing it as a collective project where all members, including women, contributed to the broader good through their work and education. The two women were also interested in the science and social implications of evolution on American civilization, particularly the vitality of (white) women for the future of the race.
Jacobi prescribed to Gilman a graduated therapeutic regimen of mental and physical training. She began with electric therapy, applying electricity to the solar plexus, a large nerve center in the abdominal cavity. To promote digestion, assimilation, and nutrition, she had Gilman drink a mixture of phosphoglycerates in wine. To "set that inert brain to work," Jacobi assigned her mental and tactile exercises that gradually increased in their complexity to "reestablish the capacity for action." Gilman started off by working with kindergarten blocks, "just building things," to regenerate her cerebral activity. She quickly moved to reading more complex books and scientific texts such as E. B. Wilson's The Cell, a text on cell theory, evolution, and inheritance. Gilman followed Jacobi's advice and returned to writing her book Human Work (1904), a book that reflected her organic vision of society. Soon after, Gilman began a program of physical exercise, joining a woman's basketball team and playing at Barnard College in New York. True to form, Jacobi's treatment of Gilman rested on a regimen of increased mental and physical stimulation.

ask game ask game!! gimme first, mention, fond, and fear 👀
Oooooh, what an excellent selection!!
First things first!
Her eyes are adjusting to the lack of light now and she can see Kepler’s face as it pulls into a frown. He rips open the lining of his jacket and pulls out a tiny first aid kit. There is the rustling of plastic and metal as he pops out some pills—codeine, if she had to guess—and presses them to her lips. When she opens her mouth, she can taste her own blood on his fingers. She swallows them dry and tries not to think about how the copper and sweat taste in the back of her mouth. Her stomach drops as Kepler pulls out a needle and thread.
Mention was harder, apparently I don't use it as much... Nsfw warning😅
There is little thought in the movement, in dragging his hand to her throat. She tries to stamp out any pleading in her eyes as she looks down at him. The weight of his hand is warm and familiar. “Don’t try anything,” she whispers, leaning into his touch. Electricity sparks in between her fingers, wreathing around Jayce’s wrist. She won’t let the lightning sink its teeth into him, not yet. They never mentioned a safe word, but the spell withheld speaks louder. Jayce’s breath hitches and, when he meets her gaze, he almost looks surprised.
Fond was even harder
“You described magic, once, as this latent storm inside you,” he says eventually, his words barely escaping the confines of his mouth. “You said it had its moments where it was a tempest inside you, something that you couldn’t control. But most of the time, it’s this mist, something you can feel in the air still, but you can move past it.” It certainly sounds like something she would have said, though she doesn’t remember the specifics of it. “Love is like that. Sometimes it’s… violent. Most of the time, it’s just…” He shrugs. “There. You can’t escape it. I don’t know. I’m not a poet, Meda.” "Did— Did you want to escape it?" “At the start, yeah. It was annoying. You were just a crewmate I was fucking, I didn’t think— didn’t want anything more.” Meda smiles fondly. “What changed?”
And finally fear!
He kisses you, once, gripping the front of your coat in a white-knuckled vice, tasting like your blood and some sort of pastry you remember him buying on the way here. You push him away, well aware that your hand on his sternum is exactly what he wants. Let’s just say you’ve never been a fan of giving people what they want. His eyes flutter open, and he watches you, eyes wide with fear and adoration, and it’s a powerful mix that certainly doesn’t disagree with your fucking god complex. “Do that again,” you whisper, pressing him against the wall with your forearm on his throat, “and I throw you out a window.” He grins, and oh, how sickening is his worship.
This is the ask game, for those interested <3

With the Princess Diaries 3 confirmed *excited squeals* here is my list of non-negotiable demands for it:
DO NOT, and I mean DO FUCKING NOT target it to the modern audience. DO NOT target it at teenagers of now. IT. IS. NOT. ABOUT. THEM! It's about us, who have been here since 2001, thank you!
Mia and Nicholas are happily married together, NO FUCKING DRAMA ABOUT THEIR MARRIAGE! Nicolas is singing in the kitchens, making one Michelin worthy dish after another, perfectly happy in his Prince Consort/trad wife state, while Mia rules
CLARISSE AND JOE ARE HAPPY TOGETHER AND PRESENT! THIS FILM CANNOT HAPPEN WITHOUT THEM BEEING TEETHROTTINGLY SWEET TOGETHER. AND THEY MUST DANCE AT LEAST ONCE!!!
I'm fine with Mia and Nicholas already having a child, but that child better be a really side-character. NO ONE CARES FOR THE NEW GENERATION OF RENALDIS! We want Mia's story, period
If it's confirmed that Mia and Michael are still good friends off-camera I'll be happy. No need to bring him in for the drama, since they were the first love, that's been well ended in the second film
I really want Lilly and that yelling guard being the absolute goals of a comic relief couple 😂
Eggs with Elsie is a NEED
THE ABSOLUTE GOLDEN RETRIEVER OF A MAN THAT IS ANDREW JACOBY BETTER MAKE AN APPEARANCE AS A FAMILY'S BEST FRINED AND VOICE OF REASON. They really need that voice 😂😂😂
Charlotte in the government. Charlotte going for/already presiding over the government. CHARLOTTE AS THE SUCCESSOR FOR PRIME MINISTER MOTAZ

Back in October 2019, Nick Briggs (exec producer at Big Finish) confirmed and denied a bunch of things that they were planning at Big Finish.
Of course... 6 months later a lot of plans changed. I made a post about the original stuff back in the day, so lets see how much of it came to fruition!
Things that were "Definitely happening"
"A new series of Dalek Empire" - well, they made Dalek Universe! But.... that has the doctor, and it doesn't have the dalek empire vibe, which is all about what happens when the doctor isn't around to stop a dalek invasion. So no this hasn't happened.
"Charlotte Pollard Series 3" - No - Still delayed, still not released. But Charlotte has been in a couple of recent things, so its possible they've recorded it recently!
"UNIT" - ah yes, at the time the UNIT series had concluded with no news of if it was going to continue - it was in limbo, and peeps were concerned it was cancelled. After 2019, it came back for a storyline called "Nemesis", so yes this came back. Now that Nemesis is over, we are yet again in a limbo where we don't know if the series will continue.
"1st Doctor Adventures" - yes! We got more of these, now with Noonan in the role!
"3rd Doctor Adventures" - yes these are still being made
"Further Adventures of Lucie Miller" - No - nothing since the last set in July of 2019.
"Missy" - yes, series 2 and 3 were released and series 4 is coming out next year.
"Lost Stories" - yes, miraculously they somehow found more unfinished stories to turn into audio dramas.
"Eighth Doctor Adventures: Stranded" - yes, and 2019 was before the first ep of stranded came out but oh boy were there troubles for this series. The first 4 episodes were recorded before the pandemic, and then the remainder had to be delayed and shifted around in the schedule a lot. But they did release it!
"Classic Doctors, New Monsters" - yes, two new boxsets.
So 7 out of 10 of the Definitely Happening announcements came to fruition.
Things that were planned
"Both Alex Macqueen and Derek Jacobi as the Master" - yes, the war master series with Jacobi is still going on, but Macqueen has only appeared once: in 2021 with the boxset "Masterful"
"Narvin" - yes, has appeared in 2023's Gallifrey box set.
"Matt Smith knows that he can approach [...] to do stories [with Big Finish]" - Woops... This isn't really a planned thing, it's just a statement. Matt Smith has not joined the audio dramas yet.
"3rd Doctor Adventures with Liz Shaw" - yes this happened in a couple of the recent 3das.
"Jago appearances" - yes Jago has appeared in a couple of things, like the Paternoster Gang series.
"Jenny (the Doctor's Daughter)" - yes she came back for another boxset.
"Rose [Tyler]" - yes there's been 2 more boxsets with Rose.
"Davros" - yes he's come back a few times.
"Torchwood Series 7" - yes. This is referring to "The Story Continues", the audio continuation of Torchwood, with seasons set after the show. Series 5 was "Aliens Among Us" from 2017, Series 6 was "God Among Us" from 2018, and Series 7 was "Among Us" and finally came out in 2023. I'm not sure if they're planning to make a Series 8, I'm not really on the pulse of Torchwood - let me know!
"Re-arranging the Monthly Adventures" - yes. This is the one that fascinates me the most! Because at the time of my original post, we still didn't know what they meant by this. I remember at the time people mourning the Monthly Adventures (or "Main Range" as it was originally known), as that was how they got into the audios in the first place. I think the changes they made are much better - instead of having the 5th, 6th, and 7th doctors crammed into one range, they each have their own sections on the site. And all the Doctors feel on the same level now, and it's easier to get into. Plus: you can now just pre-order a single doctor's releases in a bundle, if you only want that doctor's stuff.
"Subscriber Short Trips" - Sort of. This is an interesting one, because with the end of the monthly adventures there aren't any subscriptions anymore. So the Subscriber Short Trips specifically are gone. Replacing them is something much more interesting in my opinion: the first boxset for each of the 5th, 6th, and 7th doctors each year has included a bonus 1 hour audiobook. I like this system because it makes it possible to get these audio books without having to specifically subscribe to a specific period of monthly audio books - with the subscriber short trips, you could only get them by subscribing! You couldn't get them by just buying something! Plus, I've liked the audio books I've heard so far.
"Constance Clarke" - Yes, she appeared in a few of the last Monthly Adventures before the range stopped, and also in the special boxset "The Eleven". She hasn't been seen for a while, though, as the 6th Doctor now has Hebe Harrison as a new companion, so they're focusing on her story arc.
"Vicki, Steven, and Dodo joining the First Doctor range" - Mostly - Dodo is the main companion in the recent 1das, Vicki is coming back in this month's boxset (January 2024), but Steven hasn't made an appearance yet.
So 10 out of 12 planned things did happen, with the other 2 being mostly as planned.
Things they had no plans to do
"A torchwood + cybermen story" - Nope.
"Class Volume 3" - Yes, they've done volumes 3 AND 4.
"Iris Wildthyme" - Sort of, she's been in some audiobooks but not in any proper dramas.
"Sarah Jane Adventures characters" - Yes, in the recent "Rani Takes on the World" series from 2023.
"Ace and Benny together" - No, I don't believe so.
"Raine" - Nope.
"David Tennant" - Yes he was in a lot of things over the pandemic.
"Multi-meddling monk story" - Yes, this happened in Missy series 3 in "Two Monks, One Mistress".
"The Rani" - No, as previously noted the Rani is still stuck in a tangle of Rights issues.
"Clara and (Lady) Me series" - Nope - was noted as a great idea back in 2019, but I'm sure that the actors are busy with other things.
"Frobisher" - Sadly no.
"Graceless" - Yes - the series didn't come back, but the main characters came back in "The Fifth Doctor Adventures: Wicked Sisters".
"Romana III" - Nope.
"Novel Adaptions" - No. This is one of the things that is very weird: fans vocally want more adaptions of the VNA novels from the 90s, and Big Finish want to make them. But.... Nick Briggs has said that they don't sell for some reason, despite being one of the most commonly asked for series. I doubt this will come back at all.
"New Series Lost Stories" - Nope.
"Shalka Doctor" - Nope.
"Mel and Glitz" - No, and sadly the actor for Glitz passed away in 2021, which makes this unlikely.
So 5 out of 17 things they had no plans for actually did end up happening.
Things they said Will Not Happen
"Lungbarrow adaption" - No of course not lol.
"Anniversary boxsets for 3rd/5th Doctor/the Master/etc" - Sort of - at the time, Nick said "Almost every year is an anniversary of something or someone now". But since then we've had an anniversary boxset for the Master, as well as a semi-special boxset for the 40th anniversary of the 5th doctor (albeit this was just a normal release that was a bit anniversary-like)
So one sort of out of 2 definitely not happening things.
Things they said "Just Imagine..."
(which means "we're not going to answer that right now for marketing reasons")
"More unbound" - Yes, the Doctor of War boxsets which came out in 2022.
"Marc Cory (from Mission to the Unknown)" - No, but the elements of Mission to the Unknown appeared in Dalek Universe (which is probably why they didn't talk about it).
"Eric Roberts and John Simm as The Master" - Yes! Roberts has his own little series called "Master!", and both of them showed up in the "Masterful" boxset in 2021. It was heavily implied in behind the scenes stuff that Simm is not planning to show up ever again, so that may be the only time we get a Simm audio.
"Class Series 2" - Sort of. This is referring to continuing the story of Class from after the end of the TV show, which they originally couldn't do for rights reasons. The 2023 drama "Secret Diary of a Rhodian Prince" was set after the TV show, but is so far the only episode to do so.
"More incarnations of the Master" - Yes, Milo Parker played the Master in "Masterful", but nothing otherwise.
"Lady Christina Volume 2" - Yes.
"New Earth Volume 2" - No.
"The Nine/Eleven/Twelve/more incarncations of the character" - Yes, in fact this character has appeared very frequently over the last few years and I'm starting to get sick of them.
"Delta and the Bannermen sequel" - No? I'm not sure what this was referring to, but neither Delta nor the Bannermen have returned.
"Jo meeting Missy" - Yes, this happened in "Masterful".
So 6 out of these 10 happened.
"I'll look into that"
"Availability of The Veiled Leopard and Sarah Jane Smith: Comeback" - Comeback is now available on the website, after many years out of print. The Veiled Leopard is not available on the big finish site in general, I think there's some complex issues there. They occasionally make it available for free as a bonus special thing for a special occasion, and you can also listen to it on their soundcloud page.
"Limited Edition Vinyls on the website" - When they did vinyls for the 9das, those were available on the website, so this did end up happening.
And that's it! Interesting to see how much changed (and how much didn't) between October 2019 and now.

Your Twin Peaks fun fact of the day
Day #12
Lots of actors in Twin Peaks have some sort of connection to each other, to others actors, or had worked with Lynch before Twin Peaks.
Here are some examples:
If you've paid attention to the credits in the opening you'll see the name Warren Frost. He played Will Hayward, Donna's father, and was Mark Frost's, one of the creators of Twin Peaks, father.
There's also Stephen Gyllenhaal who directed episode 27 who is Jake and Maggie's Gyllenhaal father.
There's also some Twin Peaks actors whose children are now famous. Such as Peggy Lipton, who played Norma Jennings, her daughter is actress Rashida Jones, her father is legendary music producer Quincy Jones. Mary Jo Deschanel, who played Eileen Hayward, is the wife of Caleb Deschanel, who directed three Twin Peaks episodes. Their daughters are Zooey and Emily Deschanel. There's also Russ Tamblyn, who played Dr. Jacoby, he' the father of Amber Tamblyn.
Eric Da Re, who played Leo Johnson, is the son of Twin Peaks casting director Johanna Ray.
Robyn Lively, who played Lana Budding Mildford, is the half-sister of Blake Lively.
Miguel Ferrer, who played Agent Rosenfield, was the cousin of Goerge Clooney.
Jack Nance, who played Pete Martell, collaborated with Lynch in Eraserhead when he played the lead role and had minor roles in Dune and Blue Velvet. Kyle MacLachlan, who played Agent Cooper, played the lead roles in Dune and Blue Velvet. Frank Silva, who played Bob, worked on the set of Dune, Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart, Catherine Coulson, who played the Log Lady, did assistant camera work on the set of Eraserhead. Everett McGill, who played Big Ed, Grace Zabriskie, who played Sarah Palmer and Charlotte Stewart, who played Betty Briggs, also had small roles in Lynch's early work.
Catherine Coulson was married to Jack Nance.
Richard Beymer, who played Benjamin Horne, and Russ Tamblyn both starred together in West Side Story.

Intro + Masterlist
Alrighty folks, it's time that I finally put all my fics in one spot, but that will be under the cut.
Hello everyone! Feel free to call me Bow (creative, I know) and this is largely a tickle blog. But also I'm physically incapable of not talking about my obsessions so there's also gonna be a lot of bullshit here. So if none of that is for you, kindly move along.
Some fun facts about me are:
My pronouns are she/they/it, I'm aroace, I love music, podcasts, books, and the funky little queers on my tv screen, my current obsessions are Spies are Forever (Owen Carvour my beloved) and Hatchetverse (Everyone my beloved), and I'm in a Creative Writing program in university!
My ask box is open. I accept silly quips and tortured screaming in equal measure. I'm not gonna kick out any minors but keep in mind that I am over 18 and will write whatever I want to (I will attempt to tag anything nsfw but there probably won't be much). You can find my main blog and ao3 @hellyeahheistbooks if you are so inclined.
Phew. Now that that's over, let's get onto the masterlist :D

Do y'all have a thing in your family that you (or someone in your family) just assumes you say bc everyone says it but actually you can pinpoint adopting it to a very specific incident?
In my family when you get tired we say "uh oh the sleepytime train is pulling in!" and if you stay up too late we're like oh no we missed the sleepytime train have to wait for the next one!
And my sister, who is 19, was like, I said something about the sleepytime train to one of my friends (in college) and they didn't know what I was talking about! I thought everyone knew about the sleepytime train!
But we didn't say that in my family even when I was little! It's not universal at all, I know exactly why we started saying this one! We started saying it bc I went to BBG camp with a girl named Ruthie from North Carolina. I was on the pay phone at camp talking about going to the beach after I got home from camp and ruthie overheard (bc she was waiting in line for the payphone) and said, what beach, and I said Wrightsville Beach, and she said, I'm going there too! When are you going? and I said, next week, and she said ME TOO, and I was like, wow let's hang out! and then she said ok but I am going with my friend Jessie and I said that's cool and then I was at the beach and we found each other somehow, I probably gave her my uncle's local extension. ANYWAY I went over to Jessie's house and we were chatting about how they lived in Charlotte and my mom grew up in Charlotte and that my mom went to their high school and then jessie's mom was like, what was your mom's name and I said Caryn Jacobi and she was like, YOUR MOM DATED MY BROTHER MIKE FOR THREE YEARS! So every year my mom texts me, "happy birthday uncle mike" on his birthday (it's october 13).
ANYWAY Jessie's family said the sleepytime train was pulling into the station and my middle sister was 3 (I was 15) so my family started saying it about her and then we all said it and all my sisters friends adopted it and everyone says it but it's bc of my mom's high school boyfriend Mike's niece who went to school with my camp friend Ruthie. I also started putting whipped cream in my chocolate milk bc of Jessie.
I just wanted to tell this story it wasn't really a prompt, but you can share a similar story if you have one!
bye bye.

Road Trippin'...
So the family took a road trip this past week. First we stopped at Charlotte to see Frooze's new place and we got to drop off the only remaining evidence of her time spent with us (9 boxes of stuff she couldn't fit in her small apartment downtown). We had a great visit and waited for the others to arrive to leave the next morning.
Tumblr media
Jo and Tal joined us late, but Millon had to cancel joining us for the remainder of the trip because sometimes "duty calls". The next day, our next stop was in West Virginia to visit with Amy's sister (Lor) and husband (Dale) in Summersville. This was the first time for a few of us. We got to spend time on the lake and had a lovely dinner.
Tumblr media
Friday morning we got up early to travel the rest of the way to Pittsburgh. Once we hit the city limits, we became tourists.
youtube
After riding through the Fort Pitt tunnel, we stopped at the Strip District to dine at the original Primanti Bros. and bargain shop for Yinzer gear.
Tumblr media
Afterwards, quick visits to the West End overlook for spectacular views and our first house in Crafton Heights rounded off our trip and we checked in at the hotels to get ready for the evening plans.
Tumblr media
Our friends the Jacobys were kind enough to host a lovely get-together at their house to spend some quality time with old friends from the 'hood. During the festivities, Ebaugh's flight arrived and Frooze picked him up at the airport.
The next day was the main reason for the pilgrimage, our nephew's (Brendan) graduation party. It was an excellent opportunity for our family to see all the loved ones we left behind in Pittsburgh many years ago, including some we haven't seen since. It was a long day filled with plenty of hugs and kisses. By the time it was all said and done, we rested our weary heads and feet back at the hotel.
The next day, Frooze and Tal hit the road back to the Carolinas and we spent at the ballpark. Ebaugh, Jo, Amy and Dan had a wonderful day at PNC Park and got to see rookie phenom, Skenes pitch.
After the game, we fit in one final "favorite" from our days in the 'Burgh, Alexions Bar and Grill. The food was excellent and even the kids raved (they never like food places we pick). Jo even got to meet our friendly neighborhood wooden Indian, which was part of many drunken nights from days past.
Tumblr media
We then dropped off the kids at the airport where they got to say goodbye to local heroes and Dan and Amy made our way back to the hotel for the last night of rest.
Tumblr media
We were smart enough to rent a car to travel north and get flights to travel south. We had a blast and fit in a ton of visits and miles of memories!

But, as we have seen, suffrage was only one small aspect of what the W.R.M. was all about. A hundred years of brilliant personalities and important events have also been erased from American history. The women orators who fought off mobs, in the days when women were not allowed to speak in public, to attack Family, Church, and State, who traveled on poor railways to cow towns of the West to talk to small groups of socially starved women, were quite a bit more dramatic than the Scarlett O' Haras and Harriet Beecher Stowes and all the Little Women who have come down to us. Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman, freed slaves who went back time and again, with huge prices on their heads, to free other slaves on their own plantations, were more effective politically than the ill-fated John Brown. But most people today have never even heard of Myrtilla Miner, Prudence Crandall, Abigail Scott Duniway, Mary Putnam Jacobi, Ernestine Rose, the Claflin sisters, Crystal Eastman, Clara Lemlich, Mrs. O. H. P. Belmont, Doris Stevens, Anne Martin. And this ignorance is nothing compared to ignorance of the lives of women of the stature of Margaret Fuller, Fanny Wright, the Grimké sisters, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Stanton Blatch, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Alice Paul.
And yet we know about Louisa May Alcott, Clara Barton, and Florence Nightingale, just as we know about, rather than Nat Turner, the triumph of Ralph Bunche, or George Washington Carver and the peanut. The omission of vital characters from standard versions of American history in favor of such goody-good models cannot be tossed off. Just as it would be dangerous to inspire still-oppressed black children with admiration for the Nat Turners of their history, so it is with the W.R.M.: The suspicious blanks in our history books concerning feminism—or else the confusion of the whole W.R.M. with the (conservative) suffrage movement or the reformist women's groups of the Progressive Era—is no accident.
It is part of a backlash we are still undergoing in reaction to the first feminist struggle. The few strong models allowed girls growing up in the fifty-year silence have been carefully chosen ones, women like Eleanor Roosevelt, of the altruistic feminine tradition, as opposed to the healthily selfish giants of the radical feminist rebellion. This cultural backlash was to be expected. Men of those days grasped immediately the true nature of a feminist movement, recognizing it as a serious threat to their open and unashamed power over woman. They may have been forced to buy off the women's movement with confusing surface reforms—a correction of the most blatant inequalities on the books, a few changes of dress, sex, style ("you've come a long way, baby"), all of which coincidentally benefited men. But the power stayed in their hands.
