Yesterday, I spent the morning in Kaikōura, and joined a fellow Dutchie on a boat tour to spot albatross! These majestic birds hold the record for the largest wingspan of any flying bird on earth, even beating the condor. The ones we saw maxed out at about 3 meters, and they were a spectacular sight to see. They make a lot more sounds than I had expected, and boy are they fun :) The skipper had a batch of food that she could toss into the water to attract the birds, and they were clearly familiar with the process, because they were following us from the moment we left the harbour. This also meant they were not afraid of us at all, and were happy to get up close and personal!
My favourite one was the wandering albatross, which we saw the most individuals of. They are elegant flyers, slightly less elegant during landing and takeoff, and have the friendliest little faces...

...as opposed to the black-browed albatross, who looked perpetually pissed off for being beaten to the food by its larger cousins:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other species we saw included the great northern petrel, a whole bunch of cape petrels (the smaller black and white birds in the photos above) who were masters at soaring along with the boat, Salvin's albatross, white-capped albatross, a couple of shags and plenty of seagulls. I did get seasick unfortunately as the sea conditions were labeled 'moderate', but luckily I had had maybe two bites of bread for breakfast so I didn't make a mess, and I had come prepared with ginger candy. The skipper gave me some nice warm ginger tea as well. Both she and the other passenger took good care of me ❤
After the tour I decided to give up my plans of hiking for the rest of the day, because a warning was issued for heavy snow in the evening. The skipper told me they might even close the state highway if it got really bad, so I didn't want to take my chances with that. As Kaikōura didn't make me feel very welcome in the first place due to their strict rules about self-contained camping, I packed up my things and left, heading down the East coast to Ōtautahi. It was another long drive, and I was really tired by the time I arrived. I was happy to find a parking spot for the night close to some takeaway junk food, and got settled for the bad weather to hit here as well.
And just as was forecast, today has been a hell of a rainy day in Ōtautahi, and, in all honesty, in my mind too. I know with a blog like this it can seem like everything on my trip is sunshine and rainbows, as you, as the readers, see the highlights. The highlights are what I take photos of, what I can passionately recount to you. But I won't omit the downsides. Sure, going on hikes and seeing spectacular sights is fun. But you know what's not fun? Waking up at 3 A.M. to a noise when you know you're all alone in a parking lot off an unsealed road in the middle of the woods. Getting told off by a town council member for not having the right type of toilet. Always being on the lookout for public facilities, all of which usually feel unsafe. Not knowing when or where you'll next be able to have a shower. A leaking faucet in the back of your van and constant worries about its status, hoping the cold weather isn't causing a mould infestation in places I can't see. Wearing gloves inside because it's literally freezing outside.
And the annoying thing is, I don't feel like I have a right to complain. I've got an extremely comfortable van with soft blankets, free electricity with my solar panel, drinking water, and enough resources to live from. But I'm all alone. All the time. The moments where the highs seem worth the struggle in between are starting to dwindle in numbers. The rest of the trip feels like a challenge I've set myself that I'll be happy to have overcome. I currently don't feel very excited about it at all. I know that will change, I know in a little while I'll look back on this and it'll seem silly that I ever thought about it, but today I really just want to go home.
I've spent some time today writing to Workaway hosts in the Ōtautahi area, hoping to maybe meet up and hang out with locals. I feel like I need to find some inspiration again, and making a more long-term plan will help. I would like to have a clearer picture of where I'm going, and when I'll get there. Maybe after this week I'll be able to form that picture. Because I don't want to give up just yet. There is still so much left to see and do. But I know in order to enjoy those things, I need to be in a better head space. How I'll get there, I'm not sure yet. But I am determined to.

I usually don't really give a shit about my birthday. (No, you didn't miss it, it's still in August, go back to sleep.) For the last several years I've gone to visit My Beloved Pacific Ocean to celebrate - Cape Lookout to Cape Meares is straight up my almost perfect jiggity-jam. (I also LOVE camping. Particularly when I can do it by myself, because - no offense - y'all kinda suck at camping. I've been camping since I was six months old; I have certain expectations of required hardship and certain levels of culinary glamor..........)
Oregon State Parks opens for reservations at 6:00am exactly six months in advance. The Deluxe Cabins at Cape Lookout (always my goal; there are only six) are fully booked by 6:02am on any given day. It's a fun game. This year is one of those Big Round Numbers that, again, I don't give a single shit about. (Stop guessing; the big round number for me is 40.) But it means I'm trying for something better, something bigger. I'm thinking a full two weeks of madness. Just because I CAN.
I've completely forgotten where I was going from here or if I had a point.
Um.... Celebrate!
I Guess!

For The Oregon Coast Camping Fall Is One Of The Best Time
The county parks are inexpensive then state parks. They simply re-did the camping spots so you have a good, solid place to park find out here. In reality simply around miles away from the coast you’re prone to find cheaper NFS sites in addition to more availability at State Parks. Boondocking is typically outdoors of developed campsites, meaning there isn't a water or hookups obtainable. Parking in a single day in a parking zone corresponding to a Walmart is sometimes an possibility, however campers must get permission from the store supervisor before doing so. While state parks sometimes charge a charge to remain inside their grounds and make the most of tenting spots, a couple of groups are exempt from this charge.

Got To Be NC!
As you might know, I am a huge fan of parks. Some of my favorite public lands are the very ones in my home state of North Carolina. I have lived here my whole life and have been visiting these parks since I was a kid. Although I have not visited all of them, one day I know I will. So, enjoy this list (and review) of the beautiful parks of NC!
1. Carolina Beach
Fun Fact: Carolina Beach is one of the only places you can find the carnivorous Venus Flytrap and Pitcher Plant in the wild. This park is home to a subtropical wetland, which is the perfect ecosystem for these carnivorous plants. While you may be tempted to take one home with you, beware because the state of North Carolina made it a felony to poach Venus Flytraps in 2014. Also in the park is Sugarloaf Dune, which has been used as a navigational marker since 1633. In total, the park has 7 miles of trail, and is one I have visited many times during my stays in Wilmington.
2. Carvers Creek
3. Chimney Rock
This spire of rock is instantly recognizable to anyone within miles. Chimney Rock is 315 foot tall and overlooks Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. “Lake Lure?” you may ask, yes Lake Lure. The spot where they filmed the unforgettable lake scene in Dirty Dancing, as well as the scene of Baby dancing down the stairs. The town is also home to an annual Dirty Dancing festival, so you might want to plan your trip when Baby and Johnny are back in town. As well as Dirty Dancing, you may recognize this park from the climax scene in The Last of the Mohicans.
4. Crowders Mountain
5. Dismal Swamp
6. Elk Knob
7. Eno River
8. Falls Lake
9. Fort Fisher
Home to the Civil War-Era bunkers and one of the best aquariums in North Carolina. Fort Fisher is a hidden gem in ENC. As a student at UNC at Wilmington, I know all to well about the beach. I know where to find a dirty beach, a crowded beach, and I certainly know how to find a good beach. Fort Fisher is just that. You can sit on the sand and watch the pelicans fly overhead and the cargo ships come into port without the worry of trash and dirty water. Because it is a state park/recreation area, it is kept very clean and has nicer facilities than public beaches in the area. It also has 4 wheel drive access to the beach. If you are visiting, don’t forget to stop by and see Luna, the albino alligator at the aquarium.
10. Fort Macon
Fort Macon! This place is probably one of the most interesting places in North Carolina. I recently wen there with my little brother to have a little day trip. The park itself is a beautiful ecosystem, as the Musgrove trees are my favorite. We stopped first at the beach was had clear water and a great view of the Cape Lookout lighthouse from the shore. Next we went to the actual fort which was the best part of the trip. Walking throughout the fort you see rich stone works and manicured lawns. I got some really cool Insta and VSCO photos here as well. Highly recommen!
11. Goose Creek
12. Gorges
13. Grandfather Mountain
One of the windiest spots in the entire state. Grandfather Mountain is home to the famous mile-high swinging bridge. Walking across the bridge is both exhilarating and terrifying. As requested by the staff, hold on to your belongings, and even small children, to keep them form blowing into the valley below. It is also home to an amazing zoo that houses black bears and mountain lions.
14. Hammocks Beach
Hammocks Beach State Park is a park I visit quite often as it is only about 30 minutes from where I live. I have visited both the mainland site, which has an amazing visitors center and serene wooded trails, and the Bear Island site. Bear Island is a 3-mile long barrier island that is home to nesting sea turtles and clean beaches. A ferry, kayak, or personal boat can take you over to the island to enjoy the water!
15. Hanging Rock
16. Haw River
17. Jockey’s Ridge
My favorite! Jockey’s Ridge is located in Nags Head, North Carolina, right next to Kitty Hawk, the site of the first human flight. Jockey’s Ridge is the tallest active sand dune on the Atlantic Coast. Hiking through this park feels like you are in Star Wars! Some of my favorite activities to do are sandboarding down the giant dunes and paragliding. Jockey’s Ridge to me is the most fun and the most beautiful of all the parks I have visited.
18. Jones Lake
One of the two lakes formed by the geological phenomenon called Carolina Bays. This phenom creates lakes of varying pH levels, resulting in different coloration of the water. Jones Lake is colored a bright red color. This lake has great swimming and fishing. Beware alligators though!
19. Jordan Lake
Jordan Lake is like other lakes in my state, but the one things that makes it interesting: the Bald Eagle. Jordan Lake is the summertime home of this rare species. It is fascinating to watch this birds fly and hunt for prey. You can enjoy swimming and hiking, as there is 15 miles of trails throughout the park.
20. Kerr Lake
Another amazing park in the beautiful state of NC! Just like Jorden Lake, it is also home to a bald eagle. We have camped on the shore a few times and I love waking up early to watch the sun rise over the lake. We take our boat and pull our tubes. Another great thing this park has is rolling, smooth roads. Take your longboard and carve down these streets. There is also a really nice marina down the road who has killer ice cream.
21. Lake James
22. Lake Norman
23. Lake Waccamaw
Just like Jones and Carolina Beach, these park is home to some cool species. The American alligator and the Venus Flytrap are easy to find in this swampy park. While the slews and backcountry of this park are full of blood-sucking mosquitos and alligators, the lake front dock is an amazing spot to swim. The pH level of this lake makes it perfectly clear. Not only is it clear, but it also is only about 4 feet deep which makes it perfect for younger or inexperienced swimmers to have fun without all the worry. I personally like driving around and seeing all the beautiful lakes houses after taking a swim, but there is also a really nice restaurant on the lake front that I’ve heard has amazing burgers.
24. Lumber River
Lumber River is the only black water river in North Carolina, and is also a National Wild and Scenic River. This park ahs great kayaking, but beware alligators.
25. Mayo River
26. Medoc Mountain
27. Merchants Millpond
28. Morrow Mountain
29. Mount Jefferson
It is our family tradition to go every Thanksgiving to get our Christmas tree from the mountains. So, last year we decided to go to West Jefferson and we visited Mount Jefferson State Park. It was approximately 17 degrees and there was ice everywhere, but we hiked to the top and enjoyed the view of the valley below. One of the coolest things about Mt. Jefferson is the Luther Rock. This rock juts from the side of the mountain and allows you to walk out on it and take in the beautiful scenery.
30. Mount Mitchell
Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. The observation area at the top allows for you to see as far as 85 miles on a clear day. Just make sure as you head up, you layer up because it can drop temperature very quickly.
31. New River
32. Occoneechee
33. Pettigrew
34. Pilot Mountain
35. Raven Rock
Oh Raven Rock! We took this trip after a long day at the ball field on my mom’s 40th birthday. Needless to say we were tired, but we still decided to tackle the 4.2 mile hike to the Raven Falls. We were expecting a waterfall, but instead we got rapids. We did however cool off in the river before taking our long hike back. Despite this, the actual Raven Rock was beautiful and the park is still on of my favorites.
36. Singletary Lake
The best thing about this lake is how secluded it is. It is tucked away behind a tree line and barely visible from the road. The only people that frequent this are its junior campers. You can enjoy a peaceful evening fishing on its 500 foot peer and if you’re feeling lucky test your swimming skills with the alligators.
37. South Mountain
38. Stone Mountain
39. Weymouth Woods Sandhills
40. William B. Umstead
I just recently took my second trip to this park and it is still as beautiful as the first time. There are over 35 miles of hiking in this park so it is very unlikely you will see it all. While I do love hiking, I enjoy just driving through the park as well. The stone bridge over Sycamore Creek is one of my favorite spots as it has rolling fields of grass that you can lie down in and have a picnic if you please.

A lot of places are named after historical events, battles, and people, so keep that in mind. God/Goddess names tied to your world also work well. Places are also often named after things that the area is known for, like Georgia being known for its peaches.
My brain was fried by the end of this so feel free to add more!
I hope you find this reference helpful and good luck world-building!

Day 9 - Nehalem Bay State Park to Cape Lookout State Park
Some nice riding today, as my route took my off the 101 for some time and onto quieter roads along the water.
Woke up to fog again, but despite the forecast it never really lifted. Made for a bit cooler riding and not much views. However the route was a bit more inland today, so probably didn't miss too much.
On the way to Tillamook I stopped at a dried meat factory outlet. Loaded up on jerky and pepperoni for snacks, and having to tie them down with the bungie cords as I'm out of room in my panniers. Later stopped at the Tillamook Creamery and picked up cheese curds and a couple other snacks. More tied down with the bungie. I'll need to adjust my buying to eating snack ratio soon! The line was a bit too long to grab ice cream, but I had some yesterday and I'll definitely be hunting down more of it in Oregon!
Ran into Dominick again at the creamery. He picked up another two cyclists from Quebec a couple days ago and they've been riding together. Catherine and Felix stared at the Arctic Ocean and are headed to the southern tip of Argentina.
Veered west in Tillamook into the 131 Hwy to do the Three Capes Loop. When I got to the turn off from the 131 onto the road to start the loop, I saw a sign saying that the scenic road to the first cape - Cape Meares - was closed. After some Googling I learned it is closed to cars, but bikes can cycle around the gate and the road is safe to bike on. Apparently it was closed back in 2013 due to some landslides, and never fully reopened. That made for a nice and quiet climb up to top. There is an old lighthouse and an 'octopus' tree at the top, as well as a great view on clear days I'd assume. View was still nice with the fog.
Rest of the ride was on a quiet road alongside Netarts Bay. A good way to end the cycling for the day.
A full house at camp tonight. Dominick, Felix, and Catherine are here, Vince - who I met yesterday, Bruce - who I just met at camp tonight is from Calgary and headed to San Diego, and two hikers that are hiking the Oregon coast - Bean and Colton.

“Widsor Boat Used By Fleeing Hun Believed Identified,” Windsor Star. April 21, 1942. Page 3 & 6. ---- Taken Night German Here ---- Landing Was Made on Belle Isle by Nazi Airman ---- Feted at Detroit ---- Two Enemy Agents Nabbed by F. B. I. for Aiding Escaped Prisoner ---- Riverside police believed today they had identified the rowboat in which Lieutenant Peter Krug, Nazi airman, crossed to Detroit from Windsor in his flight from internment camp Friday night.
Percy Godfrey, 2125 Riverside Drive, reported that on the night of the escape, his rowboat, a 14-foot craft painted a dull shade of grey, had been stolen from that address, directly across from the eastern end of Belle Isle.
SITE SCOUTED Indication that the site of the escape from Canada may have been scouted in advance, is believed contained in the fact that the boat was almost completely hidden from Riverside Drive by the thickest growth of bushes in the district The spot lies on a straight stretch of roadway, and would not be lighted by the headlamps of any passing cars. Bushes extend almost back to the curbing of the drive.
Investigators today found no sign of footprints, but recent high water may well have eradicated such signs, had there been any.
The boat was without oars. George Jamieson, with whom the boat had been stored, reported that the eight-mile river current would have carried the Nazi to his destination, with the aid of a bit of driftwood used as a paddle. Driftwood is heavy along the beach. HAD A "PREMONITION” Mrs. Cyril Burgess, whose home is directly facing the spot where the boat was kept, reported she had a premonition Friday night that something was wrong.
"I was looking after the children of Mrs. Shiller (Mrs. Ray Shiller, 2123 Riverside Drive) when I happened to pick up The Star and read where the Nazis had escaped," she said. "I got up and locked all the doors, and my nerves were jumpy until a girl came in to look after the children. I was look ing out of the front windows most of the time, but I never saw anything suspicious."
Mrs. Shiller reported that she and her husband had returned to their home about 2 a.m. Saturday morning, and had noticed nothing amiss at that time.
Canadian border police said today that intensive investigation was under way in Windsor to uncover the source of assistance given Krug, who es caped from Bowmanville prison camp last Thursday night and crossed to Detroit on Friday where he was feted by a German restaurateur.
BELIEVED HEADING SOUTH Krug is now believed fleeing to the Mexican border, his pockets lined with money from Nazi sympathizers. while police across the greater part of Southern Ontario, Michigan and the mid-Westem states pick up his trail and piece together one of the most amazing escape stories of the war.
Krug escaped from the camp "with a companion, Lieutenant Erich Bohle, 28, by cutting through wire barricades. Bohle was caught in a park on the American side at Niagara Fall the day after the escape.
On Friday, The Windsor Star carried a police story revealing the police apprehension along the Windsor-Detroit border and issued an appeal for residents to be on the lookout for strangers.
THINK HE GOT HELP Police in Windsor today said that with boathouses still locked and barred, they did not believe the Nazi could have left the country without assistance of some kind.
Whether or not he was met in Windsor by Detroit friends who point ed out the route to Belle Isle and urged him to make the dash at a certain hour after dark, when lights from the Belle Isle brush would let him know when the coast was clear. may never be known, but authorities on both sides of the river were agreed that special knowledge plus good luck aided him in the crossing.
The rowing to Belle Isle is the mode of illegal escape from Canada which the Royal Canadian Mounted Police exposed some time ago as the most likely route for aliens leaving the country.
TWO HELD IN DETROIT Held in Detroit are Max Stephan. 49. proprietor of an eating place at 7209 E. Jefferson (at Belle Isle Bridge) formerly known as the German-American Restaurant, and a woman of German origin whose name has not been revealed. Both are said to have assisted Krug.
Stephan, proprietor of the Hun restaurant where Krug was toasted by Bund members during the week-end, is a former German restaurant operator in Windsor, city police recalled today.
About 13 years ago he operated his cafe here, police said and Detroit Germans used to come over to parties there, singing German songs in the streets.
At one time Stephan, who then spelled his name Stephen, had a small hotel and restaurant at Sandwich street and Windsor avenue and at another time he had one at Langlois avenue and Cataraqui street.
One police official recalled how the German restaurant proprietor whom they identified from a newspaper picture as the same man arrested yesterday in Detroit, used to fall foul of the law.
Krug made his way to Toronto and got bus fare to Windsor from a priest by showing papers that purported to prove that Krug was an officer of the Normandie crew.
Friday night, Krug made the trip across the Detroit River, according to John S. Bugas, F.B.I, director at Detroit, and Saturday morning presented himself at the home of the woman who is under arrest. She, it was i charged, had been sending food and clothing to German prisoners held at Bowmanville.
She called Stephan, Bugas said, and he came to her home immediately. Afterward, according to Bugas' charges, the Nazi officer was feted like a hero in the restaurant, which in the past was often described as a centre of German Bund activities.
Stephan's gift of additional escape money to the Nazi was made Sunday, according to Bugas.
Although Lieut. Krug is believed to have gone far on his way. all Michigan officers Monday night were on the lookout for him.
SHORT-WAVE SET FOUND When the woman's apartment was raided, Bugas said, a short-wave radio set was found. Although she is held as an accomplice in the crime charged to Stephan, officers pointed out that another charge of unlawfully possessing equipment denied to aliens might be brought against her.
The charge lodged against Stephan was harboring an enemy alien who is a prisoner of war. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held under $25,000 bond.
Bugas said that Stephan is a naturalized citizen. Officials said that an investigation would be made of the possibility of canceling his naturalization certificate. Ground would be offering aid and comfort to a known enemy of the United States of America.
CHANGED CAFE'S NAME Stephan's restaurant changed its name shortly after the American declaration of war. Since that time, officials said, pains have -been taken to have it always identified as an "American restaurant."
It was pointed out that agencies patrolling the river include the United States Coast Guard, the Customs patrol, the Immigration patrol, the Detroit police harbormaster forces and the Windsor police and Canadian Mounted patrol.
In recent days rowboats in the channel have been an object of especial suspicion. Another factor working against anyone seeking to make an unlawful crossing to Belle Isle is that the island for years has been a favorite landing spot for alien runners and as such is more completely guarded than other sections of the waterfront.
“Mayor Again Asks Guards,” Windsor Star. April 21, 1942. Page 3. ----- Points to Ease With Which Prisoner Escaped --- Wires McLarty ==== Secretary of State Is Asked to Confer With the Authorities ---- With Windsor's appeal for adequate protection of border transportation facilities across the Detroit River scheduled to go before the federal cabinet council for consideration, Mayor Arthur J. Reaume by telegram today referred to the ease with which escaped Nazi prisoner Lieut. Peter Krug made the crossing as emphatic evidence of the need for border protection.
Following receipt of a letter from Hon. Norman A. McLarty, K.C., secretary of state, Indicating the question of border protection had been taken up with the prime minister and would be discussed In council, the mayor sent a telegram to Mr. McLarty today.
TEXT OF THE WIRE  The mayor's telegram follows: "Escape of Nazi prisoner Krug and ease in reaching Detroit evidences necessity protection vulnerable points at Windsor. Please refer to appropriate officlals."
The mayor recently discussed the question with Mr. McLarty and was given assurance that the minister would take It up with his colleagues at Ottawa.
Evidence that the escaped prisoner was able to come to Windsor and with little difficulty obtain a rowboat to make his way to an appointed rendezvous in Detroit, served only to heighten fears of city officials that enemy agents are abroad in Windsor. Because of this fear, it is doubly necessary, the mayor said, that adequate protection be provided for industrial transport arteries across the border.
After two months of letter writing, the mayor is still experiencing the "run around" from Ottawa, he disclosed yesterday, without any apparent results.
"IT IS MY DUTY" "I don't like to poke my nose Into other people's business," he said, "but I feel it is my duty to bring the hazards of the situation here to the attention of the government. If anything happened it could cripple production in Windsor, and I still believe the tools of war are our first need."
The mayor said he was convinced that there were Nazi sympathizers loose In Windsor, although he believed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had them under surveillance.
To bear out his statement, he suggested that the escaped Nazi prisoner, a stranger to Windsor, had apparently had little difficulty in finding his way to an available rowboat on the shores of the Detroit River. The proximity of the site of the boat which was stolen for the crossing to the appointed rendezvous was more than chance he suspected.
THE GREATEST OF EASE The ability of the escaped prisoner, whose description was in the hands of police and military, to move through the city without molestation, emphasized the ease with which undercover Nazi agents could operate, he said.
Repeatedly, the mayor has apprised Ottawa of the defence precautions deemed necessary by United States authorities insofar as the tunnel, bridge and ferry docks were concerned. He has felt that the Canadian government should take similar precautions and has therefore sought to track down the authority in charge of the defence of border points considered vulnerable to enemy attack.
Picture caption: PRINCIPALS in a border drama featuring the escape of Luftwaffe Lieutenant Peter Krug, 21, from Bowmanville to Detroit, Friday night, are shown above. At upper left is the restaurant at 7209 East Jefferson avenue, Detroit, in which the fugitive was sheltered. The restaurant, focal point of the German-American Bund, removed the name "German" from its sign following Pearl Harbor. Top right shows Max Stephan, 49, proprietor of the restaurant, who admits sheltering the Nazi and revelling in the youthful flier's tales of air fights with the British. At lower left is the site, at 2125 Riverside drive, lyindsor, where the rowboat is believed to have been taken by the flier, in escaping from Windsor. At lower right is the Luftwaffe lieutenant, who roamed the Riverside district Friday night, searching for the boat in which his escape was accomplished. (By Staff Photographer.)

The Tides: Riding the Ups and Downs on the Oregon Coast Trail
By Henley Phillips
I’m in a Safeway parking lot in Lincoln City trying to set a new supported fastest known time on the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT). I didn’t plan to quit when I sat down, but the combination of chair and lapful of Dairy Queen is drawing me down into a comfortable state that I haven’t felt in 139 miles. I do some quick math for the next section - 4 mile wrong turn earlier in the day, 270 miles left to go, 18 miles still left for the day, it’s 5PM, I’ve eaten all the chicken strips, no way I can do this. ** **
Am I quitting?
So far I‘ve covered the miles out of pure excitement and adrenaline, but now I feel well out of my league. I decided to do this just 6 weeks ago. My longest run was only 32 miles; the biggest week a mere 42. This was just to get a taste of what this FKT world is all about. I get it. It’s hard. I don’t want hard. I want a relaxed summer with my wife on the Oregon coast. 139 miles is pretty damn good.
Am I quitting? I think so.
Tumblr media
When you attempt something like a fastest known time, your mind is constantly calculating the gains and losses of the experience to regulate and preserve your physical well-being. In fact our brains work in this mode every day with almost every task. It’s basic survival wherein your mind and body work to maintain a safe equilibrium of pleasure and pain. I think it’s fair to say for most of us, myself included, we do a good job of making sure the scales tip to the side of pleasure more often than not.
On my first day of the trail I ran in a state of almost pure bliss for 14 hours. The northern terminus of the OCT was windy and cold that morning, the ocean and sky a blur of blue and gray with waves crashing somewhere unseen. The trail had it all that first day - serene beach running all to myself, road miles through Seaside with its tourist trinket shops, enchanting singletrack over Tillamook Head and Cape Falcon, and then the quiet miles of a sleepy highway 101 at the end of the day. That night we stealth camped at the baseball fields in Nehalem. My wife made beef stir fry for dinner. I inhaled it, scrubbed my legs in a community faucet and went to bed like nothing happened, 52 miles later. Pure pleasure.
Day two. Katie asks how I feel first thing.
“Everything... feels intact.” I do a stupid dance to show it’s true.
The OCT is unique for two reasons - towns and trails. It’s less of a wilderness route like the word trail conjures up, so towns and resupply come easy. You also have to time the beach hiking just right or else you’ll be caught in high tide with no route off the beach or left with an unexpected road walk. Today the goal is to hit one of the main estuaries at low tide to avoid a 4-5 mile road detour.
Near the end of the day, trudging up Cape Lookout and nearing a cumulative 100 miles, my mind begins that gain vs. loss calculation - pain developing in my feet and knees, hips tight, stomach still good but then there’s the hamstring. I topped the climb as the sun was setting, and the thrill of making the estuary crossing at night took over. Headlamp, food, layers and a towel in case I had to swim the crossing. I dropped down to Sand Beach and covered the 4 miles to the estuary outlet under a sliver of moon and the beach to myself.
I sensed the outlet before I could confirm it. In the pitch black of 10:30PM, my headlamp beam was simply swallowed up by the ocean to my right and the now empty space of the estuary void to my left. No low-lying beach topography to bounce light or give perspective. Deep black on either side and moving water underfoot.
The water quickly rose to my chest on the first try, and I half-panicked and almost threw myself into the flow to swim across, dry clothes be damned. Luckily I took a quick glance across and saw a high, steep bank on the other side, which meant deep water and no easy way up. Trying again further up the estuary, there was no steep bank; in fact, there was nothing at all, which I chanced to mean shallow water rather than endless water.
The water is cold, up to my chest halfway across, but I feel in control, safe. Without thinking, however, I start chanting ‘please’ out loud. Please don’t let me have to backtrack now. Please don’t sweep me out into the dark ocean. Please let there be a safe way out of this channel. Finally my foot hits the bottom a little sooner, the water drops to my stomach, and I spot a level bank to exit the current. I let out an animal sound of satisfaction and relief but immediately realize I’ve crossed too high. Now I have a stagnant tidal lagoon to cross, the remnants of the estuary not carried out at low tide.
My phone battery is very low, so I forgo using Gaia to navigate and instead head towards where I think the beach should be, which is the other side of this lagoon. Compared to the relatively clear water of the first crossing, this stuff is a muck of seagrass and shoe-sucking sludge. I can’t see the bottom and have no way of judging depth. As I whip my headlamp around in all directions, tens of little fish jump silver streaks out of the water. Then I notice palm-sized crabs floating in the tops of the seagrass, right at chest level. Do crabs bite humans?
Twenty minutes later I’m back on the beach and running the last two miles to where Katie is waiting. The adrenaline quickly fades. I’m ice cold, and all the pain starts welling up after a day of 58 miles.
In anticipation of the building fatigue and inevitable pain, I quit on day three at the Lincoln City Safeway after a measly 28 miles. The third day was going to be tough, I knew, but my mental focus had already shifted from enjoying the Oregon coast to desperately calculating my next rest and meetup with Katie. I ended the tracking on my inReach and sent a message to my family letting them know I had quit, and to my surprise, I felt a choking, welling tightness in my chest and throat.
“I think I’m crying about this,” I told Katie.
Sleep came quickly that night, and I went to bed without dinner. We drove further south down the coast to where I was supposed to have ended my day on foot, tucked the van into a side road, and that was the end of my FKT.
In the morning I woke feeling better than expected. I stretched and jogged a little and figured I should be feeling a lot worse if I’m going to quit. We had a leisurely morning together drinking coffee with a quintessential Oregon coast view. Turns out the record was still doable, and my one-woman crew was still down to keep going.
I devoured miles for the next five days - 44, 52, 50, 50, 53 and then a casual 20 on the last day into Crissy Field and the California border. 408 miles in 8 days 5 hours 2 minutes.
I had assumed the most critical moments of a fastest known time attempt would be the cumulative minutes lost or gained during breaks, or, specifically for the Oregon Coast Trail, hitting the river outlets and tides at just the right time. Turns out the key decision for me was quitting on the third day when I thought that I’d had enough.
The important thing about quitting is that it immediately calls into question your tenacity. The moments directly after you pull the plug on something can be so illuminating and provide deep-gut feedback on the decision. In the past several years the concept of vulnerability has become quite popular, at times creating a culture and mindset of easy outs. Quitting has been flipped and is now strong, follow-through less important and rephrased as stubbornness. What’s worrisome to me about quitting is that the immediacy of relief can sometimes overshadow those moments of truer clarity directly after. Surely there are moments when quitting is the prudent, safe decision, but how often is this truly the case? Or is it more likely that your resilience, grit and ruggedness are simply being called into question?
Don’t hit the damn button. Keep going.

Where Can I Take My Dog? To The Beach?
It is difficult to envision numerous spots a canine is more joyful than at a sea shore. Regardless of whether
going around on the sand, hopping in the water, burrowing an opening or simply lying in the sun, each canine merits a day at the sea shore. However, very regularly canine proprietors halting at a sandy stretch of sea shore are met with signs intended to make hearts - human and canine the same - hang: NO DOGS ON BEACH. The following is a snappy voyaging visit through America's sea shores with each state positioned from the most canine neighborly (****) to the most noticeably awful (*).
Canines ON ATLANTIC OCEAN BEACHES (going North to South)
The rough shore of Maine (***) is entrancing to take a gander at however doesn't leave a lot
space for sandy sea shores. Canines are for the most part prohibited from the sea shores at the numerous
little state parks along the Maine coast, however canine proprietors will discover all the more benevolent
sands on the town sea shores. Around Portland, the state's greatest city, and the traveler
towns of the Southern Coast canines are regularly permitted on the sea shore whenever Labor Day
to Memorial Day and in the mornings and nights throughout the mid year. The
staggering Acadia National Park is one of America's most canine well disposed public
stops however doesn't permit canines on its sea shores.
It is fortunate for canine darlings that New Hampshire (*) has just 18 miles of coastline. State
sea shores and stops don't permit canines on the sand by any means. In the event that you should stop in New
Hampshire, attempt the Grand Island Common in New Castle or Foss Beach in Rye during
the slow time of year from October to late May.
Around Boston, the sea shores of the North Shore are beyond reach to canines during the
summer yet different towns in Massachusetts (****) are more liberal - canines are
generally permitted all year with prohibitive hours in the late spring. Cape Cod,
notwithstanding, is the best objective for sea shore cherishing canines in New England. Cape Cod
Public Seashore, America's first public coastline, permits canines on the sea shore
whenever outside the swimming regions (and not on the path). The curviture of the
Cape limits sightlines down the sea shore and gives the recreation center the impression of being
contained a progression of hill upheld private bays. The two vacationer islands off
southern Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, are both amazingly canine
agreeable - on Nantucket, canines can even take the bus to the sea shore.
The sea shores of Rhode Island (**) are kept canine free throughout the late spring however on the off chance that you
take the ship to Block Island, canines can appreciate the dark sand sea shores all through the
year. In Newport, you can take your canine on the mythical Cliff Walk (crap packs are
given at the trailhead) through the patios of America's rich and popular. The
climb starts at Bailey's Beach, which invites canines from Labor Day to Memorial
Day.
The sandy sea shores of Connecticut (*) are not known for being canine amicable. Be that as it may
many aren't that inviting to individuals either, with limited admittance being normal. On the off chance that
your canine is craving to attempt the kindhearted influxes of the Long Island Sound, stop in
Groton. Canines are not permitted to encounter America's most acclaimed sea shore at
Coney Island in Brooklyn.
The further east you go out on Long Island the more canine inviting New York (**)
turns out to be nevertheless whether on the north shore or south shore you can discover a spot to get
your canine to the ocean. Canine proprietors should pass on the excellent objections at Jones
Sea shore and Fire Island National Seashore until arriving at the Hamptons, where the tails
of surf-cherishing canines will begin swaying. Numerous towns in the Hamptons offer canine
agreeable sand and at Montauk, on the actual tip of Long Island, a few sea shores permit
canines all year, remembering Gin Beach for the Block Island Sound. The wide, white-
sand sea shores of the Jersey shore are a portion of America's generally mainstream and there isn't
much space for a canine to crush into in the late spring.
The vast majority of the sea shores in New Jersey (***), including the Sandy Hook Unit of the
Entryway National Recreation Area, open to canines in the slow time of year. Mid year
guests should take their canines to Island Beach State Park, one of the last
lacking stretches at the Jersey Shore. Pets are permitted on the non-sporting
sea shores in this ten-mile desert spring. Canines won't ever will jog down the memorable wooden
boards of the Atlantic City footpath, in any case - no canines are allowed on the
sea shore or footpath of the Grande Dame of America's shoreline resorts. Canines are moreover
not permitted anyplace in the Victorian town of Cape May however canine sweethearts can travel
south of town to Sunset Beach, a sand strip at the southernmost purpose of the Jersey
shore that is really on the Delaware Bay. In the water seaward of "Canine Beach" are
the remaining parts of the Atlantis, a special solid boat worked to ship fighters in
World War I.
Slow time of year, the sandy sea shores in Delaware (****) are a heaven for canines. Two state
parks, Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore, both invite canines between October
1 and May 1. Throughout the late spring season canines can likewise impart the sea shore to their
proprietors on select stretches of sand in Delaware state parks. In Cape Henlopen, the
80-foot high Great Dune is the most elevated sand heap on the Atlantic shore between
Cape Cod and Cape Hatteras. The solid perception towers remaining as quiet
sentinels along Delaware sea shores were worked to support America's waterfront protections
during World War II. Summer travelers can take canines on the Dewey Beach town
sea shore in the mornings and nights. Along the Delaware Bay only north of Cape
Henlopen you can discover a few sea shores that offer spirited wave activity and wide areas
of sandy sea shore - and most awesome aspect all there are no limitations against canines on the inlet
sea shores.
The Assateague Island National Seashore is the excellent objective for canine proprietors
heading for the sea shore in Maryland (***). The lacking dunesland grants canines
all year on the sea shore and in the camping areas (yet not on the short nature
trails). Keep your canine alarm for the wild horses that live on the island. Its neighbor to
the north, Assateague State Park, frequently celebrated as extraordinary compared to other state stops in
America, is forbidden to canines. On the off chance that you are not improvising on your excursion to the Maryland
coastline, close by Ocean City permits canines on the sea shore and footpath between
October 1 and May 1. Going along the Chesapeake Bay, canines are restricted from
the flimsy sea shores in Maryland state parks. Exemptions are the little sea shore in the
previous event congregation at North Point State Park and the sea shore north of the
interstate at Point Lookout State Park.
There is a lot to like for sea shore cherishing canines in Virginia (***). Canine cavorts on the
perfect, wide sands of Virginia Beach's "Strip," the business oceanfront from first
Road to 40th Street, can't start until the after a long time after Labor Day however during the
summer canines are permitted on private sea shores above 41st Street before 10 a.m
what's more, afer 6 p.m. Canines can hop in the sea whenever at Cape Henry on Fort Story,
where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay. Fortress Story is a functioning military
base, the solitary establishment dedicated to beach front tasks, yet its uncrowded, flawless
sea shores are available to general society and canines. Just toward the west is First Landing State Park,
where canine swimming is permitted on unguarded sandy sea shores. Check for occasional
limitations against canines in these spots. Simply seaward are perspectives on the Chesapeake
Cove Bridge-Tunnel, one of the seven current designing wonders of the world. Each
range of the 17.6-mile crossing uses in excess of 2,500 solid heaps to help
the beams.
Aside from assigned natural life zones, canines are allowed on the sea shore all year
essentially wherever on the Outer Banks in North Carolina (****). Cape Hatteras
Natonal Seashore has just four swimming sea shores (in season) on its whole 70 miles
of ensured coastline which leaves a lot of open sand for the canine to wander.
Marine canines can arrive at Ocracoke Island and Cape Lookout National Seashore by
ship or private boat for some miles of more lacking, canine inviting sea shores.
The northern piece of the boundary islands has been quickly creating previously
decade yet where you can in any case discover admittance to the sea shore, released canines are ledge
permitted all year in towns like Duck and Corolla. Territory North Carolina
sea shores on Cape Fear are nearly as canine benevolent; most swimming sea shores confine
canines just during the day in the mid year.
South Carolina (****) positions among the most canine neighborly sea shore states on the
Atlantic seaboard. Move away from the individuals and business sea shores and there is
a lot of unhindered sand for canines in the Palmetto state. The greater part of the more modest towns
permit canines on the sea shore under voice control and just Myrtle Beach (from 21st
Road North to thirteenth Avenue South) boycotts canines totally. Probably the best spot
to take canines here is Hunting Island State Park. More than 1,000,000 guests
(human) come here every year, 85 miles south of Charleston, to appreciate three miles of
pristine sea shore.
Georgia (**) doesn't brandish a lot of coastline and large numbers of the sea shores on Georgia's
obstruction islands and the Golden Isles are leveled out of resorts and generally welcome
canines besides during the center of the day in summer. Cumberland Island National
Coastline grants canines however is available simply by private boat. Savannah's sea shore at
Tybee Island is shut to canines.
Florida (*) positions among the most canine threatening of states. Whole areas and
areas restrict canines from the sea shore. There are such countless forbiddances as of now against
canines on Florida sea shores that when they change, it is regularly for canine
proprietors. For the Atlantic sea shores, the upper east piece of the state around Jacksonville
(Amelia Island) offers probably the best sea shores for canines in the state however heading
south beneath Daytona, canines are all around restricted from the sand. Jupiter, on
the Treasure Coast, is one spot you can discover a break from the universal NO DOGS
ON BEACH signs. Fortress Lauderdale has tossed canine proprietors a little bone - they have
set up a 100-yard long Dog Beach (at Sunrise and A1A) on Saturdays and Sundays
as it were
