Hello all, it’s been a few days since the tour wrapped up. Overall a good experience, 260 miles of riding, no major mishaps (besides a leaking air mattress), and only one flat, on the very last mile of tour! So, without further ado, a blow by blow of the tour:

Thursday August 9: Emee and I took the Tillamook Wave bus from Portland to Tillamook, then rode 10 miles to get to my favorite camping spot on the Oregon Coast, Cape Lookout State Park. While Portland has been hot and hazy for far too long, the coast has been cool and foggy. While I didn’t get a sunset, at least it wasn’t oppressive!

Friday August 10: Emee and I rode back into Tillamook, then up the Trask River Road, a total of 25 miles. Here was the wedding of my friends Erinne and Kirk. There were already some folks camped out by the time we got there. Most of the folks showed up shortly after we arrived, as it was a “bike to wedding” thing along the tough Trask River Road.

Saturday August 11: The wedding day! No riding, we hung around with friends. Emee and I managed a dip into the refreshing Trask River.

Sunday August 12: The departure day. Many folks departed to ride back along the Trask. Some took off for easier OR 6 over the Coast Range. But Emee and I had one goal: get back to the Coast! We did an almost 40 mile day, much of it through the ho-hum Tillamook Valley until we passed the rolling-coal ATV paradise of Sandlake and saw the ocean again just north of Cape Kiwanda. Tonight’s destination was the hidden-in-plain-sight Webb County Campground in Pacific City, just behind the Inn at Cape Kiwanda. So it was an easy walk to the beach and to dinner! All the attractions of Pacific City for a campground price.

Monday August 13: This would be Emee’s final full day, plus her longest day at 50 miles. The weather was great, and the sights along this stretch are decent, like the wooded and quiet climb over Cascade Head via “the old 101” plus the climb around Cape Foulweather. Sure, there’s that pesky bit of “Lincoln City”, the bane of touring cyclists, but we avoided most of it by going around the east side of Devil’s Lake. We got into Beverly Beach State Park just around dark, exhausted from the day.

Tuesday August 14: It was a short 7 miles into Newport. We got some lunch in Nye Beach and headed over to the bike shop, Bike Newport, so I can…do laundry? Yes, Bike Newport is a bike touring hub which offers services to us cyclotourists like laundry and shower, and also beer (but you have to pay for that!) At this point, Emee needed to head back to Portland so she could work. I bid my love adieu, and she got on a bus to Albany, then a train home. I continued for another 20 miles south along the socked-in-by-fog coast, settling in for the night at Beachside State Park a few miles south of Waldport.

Wednesday August 15: I had decided in advance that I’d do a shorter day of about 35 miles and end around Florence. This was due to what lied ahead: The good was the most spectacular section of the Oregon Coast was ahead of me from Yachats to north of Florence. The bad was beyond Florence was Oregon Dunes country, an area of massive sand dunes that attracted ATVs, dirtbikes, and the like. I didn’t want to camp in ATV land. And yep, the landscape was beautiful, at least what I could make out from this very foggy day, Cape Perpetua with its churning waves, Heceta Head with its lighthouse, iconic beach, and cliffside road, and the miles in between. I was unwowed with the campground in Florence, didn’t want to press on, and the fog fog fog was getting to me, so I found an inexpensive motel in town for the night. There’s a great luxury on a bike tour after a week of camping, being able to wheel a loaded bike into your room, and crash!

Thursday August 16: Sleeping in a motel room after a week of camping made me energized in the morning, so much so that I got going the earliest I had for any day of the trip. I left Florence by 9 AM. This is good, since I had my longest day ahead of me. The twenty-some miles of US 101 through Oregon Dunes Country passed by fast: inland, trees, just one good Dunes overlook, mostly flat/rolling with one significant hill outside Gardiner. I rolled into Reedsport at noon and had lunch and beer at a brewpub. This is when I waved goodbye to the Oregon Coast (though I only caught one glimpse of the Pacific Ocean that morning.) Now I’d be turning inland and following the Umpqua River, one of the few Cascades-to-Pacific Rivers in the state. The next 20 miles was pretty flat as the river was tidal here. After Scottsburg (the end of tidewater), it got a little more rolling, but still pretty level. The riding was easy, and the traffic on OR 38 wasn’t as bad as some had made it out. I rolled into Elkton around 6 PM and intercepted my hosts, Randi Jo and Eric, who would guide me the last mile to their rural property. Randi Jo is the maker behind Randi Jo Fabrications, a company that makes cycling caps and bags. I’d be crashing with them for the night. It was nice to see where it was all made, pet some goats, and hang out with their kids. A total of 65 miles was ridden today.

Friday August 17: This was going to be a “just get to Eugene” day, where I would be able to catch Amtrak home. I wasn’t exactly looking forward to the 50 mile ride though not super exciting territory, so when Eric offered a ride into Eugene (he had errands to run), I gladly accepted the offer. I got in before noon. Deciding I wanted to be home today, I changed my Amtrak ticket for the 4:30 train, then bummed around town for a few hours.

If you live in Oregon, and particularly along the coast you get a huge assortment of amazing natural features to gawk at.  In this case, you have a hole that the ocean just kind of drains into.  People assumed that this hole was bottomless because it never seems to fill up.  It just keeps draining the high tide ocean away and spouting a huge jet of water every time the waves hit it.  It is not bottomless but it’s better for our poetic side if we allow ourselves to think it is.  It’s actually only about twenty feet deep but that’s still enough for it to swallow you.

The reality is, it’s a just a sinkhole.  The problem with saying ‘just a sinkhole’ is that sinkholes are scary things in their own right.  They can open up anywhere underground water does its thing.  That’s pretty much everywhere and erosion happens even when you’re not looking.  While rare, sinkholes have been known to drop 2000 feet all at once.  Some swallow cars, houses, and in one case, an entire city block.  That’s no fun if you happen to be standing on one when it opens.  Did we mention that they’re rare?  We don’t want to be the source of any phobias.
