Oldbury manufacturer Stephens Gaskets invests in new site to support growth
Stephens Gaskets has been been manufacturing gaskets and ring shims since the company was established in 1947. They have recently invested in a new site with a £1.7 million loan from Lloyds Bank as it looks to meet growing demand for its products. This site will provide 62,000 sq ft and boost output by as much as 50 per cent to meet increasing demand from existing and new customers. The family-owned business has diversified into new services and sectors, including construction. This new site will house new machinery to support further expansion of their products. Over the past 12 months, Stephens Gaskets has increased turnover by 20 per cent and also significantly increased its workforce. This came after the firm expanded their business to support national efforts to produce PPE for frontline workers during the coronavirus outbreak. Piers Baynton, manager at Stephens Gaskets, said: "We saw demand shoot up last year and it quickly became apparent we would need to relocate somewhere bigger if we wanted to keep growing our business. "We are proud to be a family business that has been passed down through three generations and the Lloyds Bank team has helped us to maintain our family values while supporting our growth. We’ve no doubt that our partnership will continue as we take this exciting new step in our journey." Mark Corfield, relationship manager at Lloyds Bank, added: "Stephens Gaskets has enjoyed growth during an uncertain time and this looks set to continue. We are looking forward to helping them take the next step in their journey as they move into their new premises and look for new opportunities to expand. "The West Midlands remains the country’s manufacturing heartland and it’s fantastic to see another homegrown firm enjoy such success. We will continue to support them and other manufacturers in the area as we continue to help Britain prosper." For more information on Stephens Gaskets contact them today. Racking manufacturer completes phase one of Pre-treatment and Powder coating plant upgrades
td finishing are experts when it comes to powder coating and pretreatment system solutions. We are proud to be continuing to install powder coating plants throughout the current pandemic. The UK’s leading supplier of shelving and racking in Milton Keynes recently completed Phase 1 of their Powder Coating plant upgrade. As a Key Supplier during the Covid 19 lockdown, the group continued to supply vital equipment to the NHS. Despite the ongoing pandemic during this period, TD Finishing completed the installation of phase 1. This consisted of a new upgraded pre-treatment, drying oven and conveyor systems. The installation had no unplanned production downtime. The system is capable of vertically processing components up to 4,200mm in length. The new powder coating plant consisted of a stainless-steel pre-treatment, utilising high efficiency tube firing gas burner, plastic spray nozzle system and stainless-steel pumping facilities. This gives the capability to utilise low temperature phosphate free chemistry. Therefore, saving on both energy and water consumptions. The drying oven was pre-installed off-line to eliminate any plant downtime and incorporated high efficiency modulating gas burners, a bespoke thermally insulated oven body and an air circulating system with an operating temperature 60 degrees below the previous system.

Drywall Maintenance - 5 Tips
Drywall is one of the most commonly used construction materials for homes. Durable, affordable, and very customisable, it is often used alongside the inside structures of homes. It can help to enhance other design aspects and architectural features too. However, drywall requires regular repair and maintenance checks in order to keep it in the best shape. As one of the leading drywall suppliers, we have put together our top drywall maintenance tips. This will help you to keep your structures in the best condition.
Drywall Maintenance | Removing Popped Nails From Drywall
Drywall requires the joining of panels with studs and ceiling joists. Over time, the studs and joists can pop out, which can cause the panels to become loose and disjointed. If you encounter this issue, remove the popped nails and replace them with new ones. After this, apply the drywall compound to cover them.
Drywall Water Damage
One of the most common issues that can occur with drywall is water damage. This can take place as a result of faulty plumbing or heavy rainfall. A common mistake that homeowners can make is just to fix or replace the part of the drywall that is visibly damaged. A drywall maintenance tip, whether it is visibly damaged or not, the actual cause of the damage should be addressed first. Whether it is a damaged roof, a broken gutter, or a faulty pipe, the issue behind the water damage needs to be fixed as a priority, or the issue will continue happening no matter how many times you fix the drywall.
Drywall Maintenance | Filling Small Holes
Small holes might not bother you much to begin with, but they can get larger over time and begin to impact the strength and performance of the drywall. A useful drywall maintenance tip is to fix small holes straightway. Keep a drywall repair plate handle, so that if a hole does form, you can fill it up quickly and prevent it getting bigger and becoming irreparable.
Staining
It is impossible to prevent your drywall from getting stained over time. In fact, sooner or later, you are bound to notice marks appearing. However, keeping the drywall clean is something that every homeowner should aim for. A dirty wall can completely change the aesthetics of a room so it is important to stay on top of stains. A drywall maintenance tip to get rid of them, dust the drywall first, and then gently wipe it clean using a damp sponge. If there are stubborn stains or you can see mould or mildew under the panel, be sure to get in touch with professional drywall specialists straightaway for support.
Drywall Maintenance | Repainting
To keep your drywall looking clean and fresh, make sure that you repaint the walls every couple of months. This can provide the drywall with a protective layer, and therefore reduce the risk of mould and water damage.

Safe and Hygienic Food Grade Flooring
Wet Working
Working in the wet is one of the most hazardous environments, with slipping being the most common cause of injury. But if you cannot avoid walking on a wet surface, slow down and take smaller steps. This will help you keep your balance and avoid slipping or falling. However, working in an environment where the floor is constantly washed down, it is recommended to resurface all pedestrian areas with a material that provides a low slip-risk (hygienic food grade flooring).
The Right Product For The Job
The product of choice for a hygienic food grade flooring in the food industry and wet production is a Resdev Pumadur RT. This is resin-rich, heavy duty and trowel applied polyurethane floor screed. It can be used on concrete and polymer modified cementitious screeds. In particular Resdev Pumadur RT is designed to give the floor durability, as well as impact, abrasion and chemical resistance. Moreover, the lightly textured finish makes the product ideal for both wet and dry processing environments. For instance, the food, beverage, and chemical industries.
Case In Point
PSC were recently called in to look at refurbishing floor area to Fish Processing Area totalling 53 square metres. Robert Miller Ltd has supplied both fresh and frozen fish for over 30 years in and around Essex to restaurants and customers. At their fish processing plant in West Hanningfield, Essex, the existing laytex, resin coats and localised failed floor screed was beyond repair. It was recommended that the area would benefit from complete refurbishment. Laying a new nominal 6mm Resdev RT polyurethane screed - the hygienic food grade flooring product of choice. In preparation for the 6mm screed, the laytex, resin coats and localised failed floor screed were all removed. The existing concrete floor surface keyed, using a handheld 110v PCD grinding machine and a handheld total enclosed 110v diamond grinding machine. Subsequently, the area was vacuumed clean of all residues. In order to ensure a clean edge, 6mm x 6mm saw cuts were made to the perimeter of floor area. This included door thresholds, around drains and gullies and where necessary to toe in and anchor the screed. After that, a nominal 6mm heavy duty Resedv Pumadur RT polyurethane, textured, matt, in the clients Chelsea Blue was laid to the entire area. The client commented “A complete transformation of a very busy area. The area is an integral part of the processing plant and hence is in constant use. The floor has gone beyond repair and hence required complete refurbishment. PSC have completely transformed the area, on budget and within the timescale we set”. The entire job was completed in just 2 days. 1 day to prepare the floor and a further day to install the 6mm RT resin screed.

Off Site Production | Perimeter Coffer Lighting Detail
At Drywall Pro Cut we are always striving to find ways to improve the way we work in the drylining industry. A great example of this is a recent project for perimeter coffer lighting offsite. In fact, we see great benefits in producing items such as deflection heads, builders work holes, door sets and many more off site.
On one of our current projects, a client trusted us with prefabricating a perimeter coffer to carry two linear LED light strips.
Perimeter Coffer Lighting Detail
Producing these components off site has many advantages: Quality: By manufacturing off site we can monitor the quality much easier and give assurance to our clients that they have been built correctly. The boards are all cut using a large table Flextos machine, giving a machined finish to the board. Speed: We can manufacture the bulkheads a lot quicker in a factory setting. Built in purpose made jigs instead of being made in situ 3m in the air off a scaffold. Programme: By manufacturing these labour intensive items off site we reduce the amount of man hours on site, aiding in achieving programme dates. Health and Safety: Less on site production reduces the chances of an accident occurring. It also reduces the amount of dust and waste produced on site. Covid-19: In the current pandemic with social distancing the bulkheads are 2.4m long so our site operatives can work safely within the guidelines.
Some of the factors to take into account during the process of design and manufacturing the perimeter coffer lighting are as follows: Due to the weight of the finished bulkhead it has been built in three separate pieces. Transportation: They have been built 400mm wide x 2.4m so they can be packaged on a standard 1.2m x 2.4m pallet. Installation: The metal work extends past the plasterboard at one end and is short the other to allow the bulkheads to be slotted together. If you need perimeter coffer lighting or any help with any other drylining project then get in touch with Drywall Pro-Cut today! Read the full article

Recommended Flooring For Butchers
High levels of Hygiene are essential when it comes to flooring for butchers. Working with raw meat, blood, bones and organs, processed foods are susceptible to bacteria if High levels of Hygiene are not maintained. Hence strict requirements apply to running a butcher’s and why butchers must take account of regulations from Environmental Health and the Food Standards Agency.
The Food Standards Agency guidance states that Food preparation areas must have a “design and layout must permit Good Hygiene Practices and protection against contamination. Floor surfaces must be sound and easy to clean - must use impervious, non-absorbent, washable, non-toxic materials. Where appropriate, adequate surface drainage necessary.” Why concrete alone is not enough An unprotected concrete floor will be of no use in meeting these important health and safety standards since it is porous, and some moisture movement will always occur. Moisture is a vehicle for many harmful contaminants therefore, suitable meat processing flooring is essential. Polyurethane resin screed systems are ideal as they offer a seamless finish, polyurethane resin can be complemented by coving and render, to allow for a smooth transition from wall to floor that does not support bacteria and microbial growth.
Welshpool butchers PSC Flooring were called in by John WF Bebb Construction Ltd to look at the Cutting Room and Sausage Room floor at Rikki Lloyd Butchers of Welshpool. The concrete surface had falls to a central drain and it was evident they had previously painted the floor themselves and it was not lasting. The floor areas were Cutting Room totalling 35.5 square metres and Sausage Room totalling 19 square metres. Assessing the situation, it was recommended that the best surface would be a 6mm Resdev Pumadur RT screed. Ideal even in the most arduous environments, this product is the most hard wearing on the market and designed to withstand impact, abrasion, animal fats and proteins, frequent cleaning, and chemicals. Resdev Pumadur RT screed offers excellent slip resistance in the wet and can be laid to falls to help drainage helping to meet high health and safety standards. Initially the floor was thoroughly cleaned and prepared to remove extensive build-up of failed floor paint, using the totally enclosed handheld 110v PCD grinding machine, with the edges being prepared with a handheld total enclosed 110v diamond grinding machine. All residues and dust were vacuumed with a 110v triple motor vacuum.
A 6mm x 6mm saw cut was added to perimeter of floor area, door thresholds, around drains and gullies and where necessary to toe in and anchor screed, before a nominal 6mm heavy duty Resedv Pumadur RT polyurethane, textured, matt, red was laid. The existing Coving System was also in need of recoating, but in order to meet the client’s tight deadline the client decided that rather than us return , the client would coat that themselves so we supplied 3 units of 3.2kg Resdev Pumadur TF polyurethane coating system, in a matching matt, red. The whole job was done in just one day - a Sunday, to avoid down time in the busy butchers. Mr Danny Bebb, Director of John WF Bebb Construction Ltd stated “PSC were most accommodating in achieving our client’s tight deadline and even with such a tight timescale they have completely transformed the floor.” Read the full article

Off Site Production | Prefabricated Partitions Above Bathroom Pods
Prefabricated Partitions | One of our customers encountered a construction problem where we had to build fire rated partitions above bathroom pods in a new hotel. The void was only 400mm and could only be accessed from one side. So a shaftwall partition was the obvious option, however, due to ductwork that needed to be installed through the partition, shaftwall could not be used. Prefabrication partitions was the solution. To overcome the problem we decided to prefabricate a standard fire rated partition off site with the builderswork holes for the ductwork installed. Working closely with the technical department of the manufacturer construction drawings were issued and manufacture commenced. The prefabricated partitions arrived on site with the framework and one side boarded including a tape and joint finish. All the site operatives had to do was slide it into position fix the base and headtrack then fix the pre-cut boards to the other side. Producing the partitions off site meant that our customer had peace of mind that the quality of the finished product had been monitored under factory conditions. It also dramatically cut down the installation time on site If you have any questions on our prefabricated partitions then get in touch today. Read the full article

What Is Drywall? Everything You Need To Know
If you have found yourself Googling “what is Drywall?” it’s likely that you are exploring viable construction materials. Put simply, Drywall (which often goes by the name of wall board, gypsum board or sheetrock) is a construction material, which is commonly used to create walls and ceilings. Alongside the core inside structures of a building, it is also used to enhance or create other design aspects including arches, eaves, and other architectural features. Using Drywall Drywall usually comes in the form of sheets, and as standard is made from gypsum plaster which is covered with paper. Using adhesives, nails, or screws, the sheets are fasted to the building frames and can be joined with other sheets using tape. Joint compound is then used on the tapes to create a smooth finish. Fast and easy to install, and boasting a whole host of benefits, it is easy to see why Drywall is so popular in domestic, commercial, and industrial construction. Types of Drywall The material comes in many different forms, which is why lots of people will turn to a specialist Drywall company such as Drywall Pro-Cut for support when it comes to sourcing and determining the best material for the job. It contains gypsum which contains water, which means the material can retard fire expansion. However, due to the fact it can be used in a wide variety of buildings and applications, there are plenty of different types of the material. Read the full article

IWM and ADDO group – a three-decade relationship pays dividends
As a UK leader in savoury foods production for decades, the ADDO Food Group is uniquely positioned to understand the benefits of long-lasting work relationships. This is why, for the past thirty years, the company has relied on IWM (Industrial Washing Machines) for sanitising and tray washing equipment. At its Palethorpes Bakery site in Market Drayton, the ADDO Food Group produces a wide range of mouth-watering sausage rolls, slices, pastries and savoury pies. In the early 1990s, the company approached IWM with a requirement for an automated tray washer which was needed for washing and sanitising the items used for mixing savoury pie fillings. IWM designed, produced and installed a machine that enabled fast washing and drying of trays which helped speed up production at the bakery. Six years after this, at the Pork Farms Riverside Bakery in Nottingham, an additional IWM Twin Lane multi-purpose tray washer was commissioned at the site. This tray washing equipment was later supplied with a five-stage blower system which was installed on site in Nottingham by the IWM service team to supplement the washing and sanitising system with a drying process. The T1500 has features that help reduce its carbon footprint - such as idle mode - where it shuts down wash pumps and conveyors automatically when no wash items are detected. Read the full article
