Montréal GP '24 // DNF on Lap 40
"Honestly, there is not much more to say apart from the engine issue cost us everything. Then, at one point, we decided we'd try to go on the slicks when we knew it was going to be more chances that it wouldn't work. But we had to test something because, with the engine issues we had, we would have been out of the points anyway..."

Rachel is fighting for the fans while being double-teamed by Karun and Jacques Villeneuve right now
She's making a point that special helmets are a way for drivers to show their personalities and it's important for the sport that way
Jacques and Karun are basically toxic male fan whining that the "only way drivers should show their personality is by winning"
At its core the problem with toxic masculinity in motorsports is so severe that we get this sort of discourse even on international commentary

do i.. WANT to know about the drumlins?
YES YOU DO
Drumlins are glacial landforms, which means you find them only in places that have been glaciated. And they're very distinct when you know what you're looking for.
Tumblr media
A hill with one steep side, one looooong sloping side, and you've (most likely) got yourself a drumlin. (Unless it's small. Drumlins are tens of meters high and hundreds of meters long, so if you've got a short one with way more elongation, you've got a drumlinoid.) They're all over Canada, the north eastern US, and northern Europe. The one pictured above is in Ireland. The ones in Canada and the US formed as the Laurentide Ice Sheet, a kilometers thick mass of glacial ice, was spreading across North America during the Last Glacial Maximum
Tumblr media
There are lots of really cool glacial landforms (eskers and kames and lakes (Glacial Lake Agassiz my beloved) and like a dozen types of moraine), but drumlins are my favourite because they're so incredibly easy to identify, they occur in swarms, and they're kinda weird as hell
There's still some debate among geomorphologists about how, exactly, they form but I was told that the (mindbogglingly huge mass of) ice catches on a sticky uppy bit of bedrock and instead of mowing it down like a child kicking over a stack of blocks, moves around it instead. And because there's now a place behind the bedrock where there's less ice, the ice drops a whole bunch of glacial till (all the bits of sediment that did get mowed down like a child kicking over a stack of blocks) on the other side of the bedrock bit
Tumblr media
(This is a constructional theory, where the drumlin is built up. the other main one is the erosional theory, where everything but the drumlin is eroded. There's also a theory that drumlins are deposited by subglacial meltwater, but that one is highly controversial)
"Now wait," I hear you say, "go back a bit. What the fuck was that about swarms?"
They occur in swarms.
Tumblr media
If you've got one drumlin, good chances you've got a lot of drumlins. Which is actually amazing, because the steep side of the drumlin faces the direction of flow, which means we know exactly how the ice sheet moved. In this image, for example, the ice started at the top, near Lake Ontario, and then moved south. From looking at drumlins (and other glacial landforms, we do like to have multiple reference points), we know that the Laurentide Ice Sheet started in the Hudson Bay and crept out from there
And because they're so distinct (tear drop shaped, made of till, occur in swarms), and because drumlins can only have been made by glacial activity, we can look all over the world and find these things and know that this place was once under several thousand tonnes of ice
Tumblr media
Not during the Last Glacial Maximum, but definitely ones before it. And I just think that's neat

Westlock voters will be going to the polls Feb. 22 on a bylaw that would ban the town’s rainbow crosswalk, along with any other political, social or religious decorations on town crosswalks or flagpoles. Town of Westlock councillors passed first reading of the bylaw, created in response to a petition submitted under the Municipal Government Act (MGA) at the end of September, and set the vote at their meeting Nov. 27. The petition asked for a bylaw that would mean the town will be able to fly only its own flag, the provincial and national flags in public spaces and at town facilities. As well, crosswalks will only be painted with the traditional white laddered design, with no grandfathering of any existing crosswalks or flags that would contravene the bylaw.

Hello StEx fandom!!! Does anyone here remember Canuck, from the 1996 On Ice production? Anyone? No? Wery well. Have my redesigned Canuck, now with a personality of his own!
Tumblr media
Canuck, real name "Tasunke Kohana", is the Canadian National Engine, and works on the Calgary-Ottawa line. He's an EMD-FP7, and I decided to ethnically code him as a Dakota Sioux, to represent at least partially Canada's First Nations.
On each of his 3-day long journeys, he works with:
his girlfriend Sapphire the Dome Lounge Car (Pearl's cousin from maternal side)
Johnny the Restaurant Car
Twila, Étoile, Nuit and Lavender the Wagons-Lits
Molson the Bar Car
Canuck speaks fluently in English, Quebecois French, Dakota dialect, and Ojibwe. He only wears the eagle feather during Indigenous Peoples Day, Orange Shirt Day, and Canada Day as a sign of protest agains the bad treatment of First Nations People around the Nation.
Likes: hot coffee with cream and maple sugar during freezing days, the Canadian forest in autumn, seeing the Northern Lights during a journey
Dislikes: wild animals blocking the tracks, vandals who ruin the interior of the carriages, when it's freezing so much that the tracks gets covered in ice

CANUCK Canuck my beloved you deserve to be real
He’s technically already a national, but I basically just stole the name. He’s got the Vancouver canucks logo on his back (sponsored) as well as a bunch of the provincial flags! (Including Labradors cause fuck you)
He’s narrow gauge, so he’s got inline skates! Just thought it would be a silly nod. He’s also nice and polite but the SECOND he touches the race track it’s no holds bared, racing is a contact sport to him

To every American who has ever told me that I have it easy/easier because I'm in Canada,
Maybe start by reading the GODDAMN WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE!!!
I'm an sick and tired of being told that I am not suffering just as much because I am not paying as much as you are. I recognise that my unaffordable $10 000 is probably your unaffordable $100 000 but I need you to stop telling me that I have it easier.
I need you to stop saying 'our wait times are bad too!' Yes! They are! No one should have to risk their life waiting! But, like I'm recognising that healthcare is less unaffordable than mine, I am asking you to recognise that your 2-3 year wait time can be 5-15 years for me and our resources are scarcer and our travel is less accessible and our insurance covers less and government-funded healthcare means economy-based availability.
I am making absolutely no judgement about who has it worse. I'm trying to recognise that this is no longer the 1970s and that we have vastly different systems with vastly different problems and I am sick and tired of saying 'I'm suffering uniquely as a disabled person in Canada' but then having to tack on 'but, although I am unique, the Americans have it worse and I must repent' when my suffering is unconditional so my expression of it should be too.

At this point I suspect Pierre Poilievre blames Trudeau when he can't find his car keys, can't get it up for his wife, steps on a piece of lego, etc. Just put a sock in it, man!

it is hilarious how many canadians are just the slightest tap away from being absolutely insane due to how repressed they feel from social expectation.
