There is no way that Supers are built like that in the eyes of Kryptonians. As humans to get stronger we need to work out, working out causes micro-tears in muscles that heal stronger that causes us to bulk up. But Supers are aliens, they are specifically aliens that are much stronger than humans naturally without working out, the Supers living on Earth have never encountered something that would be super difficult to lift that often meaning their muscles never experienced physical strain often enough to cause the micro-tears that lead to bulk. Meaning that Supers shouldn’t be built like that, they have never worked out a day in their lives, so if they were to meet a Kryptonian that did work out it would be comparing a babies bulk to a body builder’s. Is this a long winded way to say that I think that the Supers are actually as strong as an average Kryptonian and actually don’t have super strength comparatively to their alien race? Yes it is.

Batfamily mer au
Bruce - Tiger shark
Tiger sharks are generally a solitary species, the coloring fits him (usually grey with darker grey stripes, although the stripes fade as they get older), they’re one of the largest species of shark and just like have you seen Bruce?
Tumblr media
Kate - Stingray
Stingrays are actually the closest relatives to sharks, so since Kate is Bruce’s cousin I think it would make sense for her to be something similarly related to sharks while not being a shark herself. Some stingrays have specialized jaws that allow them to crush sculls, and I think that sounds cool for one thing and for another could be kind of fitting considering that Kate has killed. Some stingrays are also able to change color over the course of a few days to adapt to their habitats, so I kind of imagine Kate being a brownish red color or a dark grey, stingrays also tend to be non-aggressive to humans until they’re threatened
Tumblr media
Dick - Redtoothed Triggerfish
So first of all the coloring was enough. But these fish also always seem to be grinning which exposes their red teeth, similar to how child Dick would fucking laugh during fights and stuff, something that should be cute but is a little objectively terrifying. They’re also more peaceful than other triggerfish but can become more violent/aggressive with age, they have a special swimming style because of the shape of their fins, many of them are solitary but some of them stay in groups
Tumblr media
Barbara - Crystal Jelly
They’re a species of jellyfish create a green fluorescent protein and two different bioluminescent proteins which causes its green-blue coloring (I’m colorblind, that’s how I saw it described), they’re almost entirely transparent and colorless, these jellyfish were the reason a 2008 Nobel prize in chemistry was awarded, one of the main reasons I picked jellyfish for Barbra though is that jellyfish don’t swim in a traditional way. The only way a jellyfish can swim is by squeezing the top of their body (the bell) and ejecting water in the opposite direction to push themselves forward, and even with that they’re some of the most efficient swimmers in the entire ocean. And idk, I really like the fact that when dc actually let Barbra be disabled they gave her actual limitations but she still found ways to work with them and still be herself, so in an au like this where it would realistically be a bit harder for her then other batfamily members it kinda made sense to me
Tumblr media
Jason - red-tailed black shark
So these actually aren’t sharks at all they’re closer related to carp, but they’re extremely small (Robin!jason?) around 6 inches (16 cm), they’re very territorial and harass other fish when they enter their territory, juveniles tend to be calmer then adults
Tumblr media
Cass - Blacktip reef shark
Genuinely one of my favorite sharks. So usually blacktip reef sharks are fairly skittish and avoid humans, but when humans wade into the water near them they do bite, they can be found up to 75 meters deep but usually stay in shallow waters, they’re generally a smaller species of shark and fall prey to things like tiger sharks, but they’re still an apex predator.
Tumblr media
Tim - sockeye salmon
They’re a type of mainly red but also green salmon, they can be anywhere from 2 feet long to 2 foot 9, most sockeye salmon start out in freshwater as children before going to the ocean, then once again returning to freshwater as adults (so maybe Tim meeting the rest of the batfamily while going to the ocean and just staying)
Tumblr media
Stephanie - Purple Tang
Just the color was enough to pick this for Steph, but some other reasons: younger purple tang are described as “cryptic” and tend to hide a lot which reminds me of the very beginnings of spoiler, while they can be generally peaceful others can be aggressive and territorial, and they’re very active fish
Tumblr media
Duke - Pacific sea nettle
It was so hard to find a bioluminescent yellow jellyfish./lh they have a golden bell (kind of like the head) and can grow to be up to a meter, their carnivorous and use their tentacles and toxins to find food, and produce bioluminescent glow that lights up their tenticals
Tumblr media
Damian - Spiny Dogfish
So despite the name this is actually a type of shark (I thought it would make sense for Damian to be a shark since Bruce is), they have two spines and there’s actually a comic series that gave Damian a replacement spine (we don’t talk about why. I’m only using the information for my benefit.), the spines are used defensively and they can arch their backs to pierce whatever is holding them and also make a venom, they hunt in packs up to a thousand and are very aggressive hunters (league maybe?)
Tumblr media
I’m not actually (probably) writing a fic or anything about this, but if you are, feel free to use some of these!

The human instinct to dehumanize
A warning to all of the insidious nature of bigotry and its path beginning with dehumanization
Now, I’m sure nearly all people have come across bigotry or discrimination of some form in their lives. Regardless of group, class, identity, or race, all have seen and experienced this facet of the human experience in some way or another. My question to you is: Do you think you are above it?
Let us see. Do you consider Terfs, for example, to be human? Probably. Have you ever said that TERFS are brainless, dumb, have but a single brain cell, or something else of a similar vain? I’d bet the answer is yes. If not, there is probably another group you can think of that you have. When you said or thought this, did you think this to be a fact? Did you feel that your statement could be applied to all who exist under that label. If I told you that it is perfectly possible for a TERF or similar to be an otherwise stand-up member of their society that regularly helps at homeless shelters or volunteers at an orphanage, would you be able to believe me?
See, there comes a point when we make sweeping generalizations of a group, any group, where we can either take these generalizations to be true, even subconsciously, or we can actively remind ourselves that they are inherently false. The fact of the matter is, we as a species have, to my knowledge, never uncovered any fundamental truths. All human knowledge, regardless of apparent complexity or simplicity, is inherently a model we have constructed atop the natural world. And a model, by its nature, is an imperfect reflection of reality. A reasonably good example is the hydrodynamics model of electricity. In it, we pretend that wires are pipes that electricity flows through, and we use this analogy to calculate the pressure and velocity of flow in certain areas, as well as other things. In any case, this model is just that, a model. It is wrong. Electricity does not flow through wires. It flows in the electromagnetic waves surrounding the wire, and are guided by the wires in a process I am not educated enough to attempt to explain.
The point above is this, anytime you put a label on a group, be it that politicians are greedy, CEOs are monsters, Americans love cars, children aren’t responsible, young people are inexperienced, etc. you are ultimately creating a sweeping generalization that is wrong. Does this mean that such generalizations should not be used? Not necessarily. Generalizations, or models if that helps, can be useful as a means to help wrap your head around a concept. This is true both in STEM and with people. The important part is remembering that it is a generalization, a model, and that it is, inherently, flawed.
I’ll be the first to admit that I have been known to call republics morons or inhuman monsters both in my own mind and aloud. But the key is that I will then follow it up with a recognition that they are humans, they can changed, and that there are systems at play that I may not understand that lead them to make the decisions and statements that they do. I can still vehemently disagree with their policy, but I understand that they are humans, if heavily misguided. This is critical as it allows me flexibility if/when I run into someone in real life that holds an opinion that I would otherwise hold to be inhuman. For those of you reading, that person could be a parent or friend who, after you come out, turns out to be a TERF. All before then, they had been a good person, but this one thing is making them completely disassociate from you. If you try to deal with this with the assumption that, as a TERF, they are somehow naturally mentally deficient and thus incapable of understanding rational thought, then you will never be able to repair your relationship. If you instead recognize that they are a real human who can change, then you can talk to them and figure out what things in their lives have led to them coming to the false conclusion that you are some degenerate monster.
I suppose to sum up, be careful how you try to compartmentalize the actions of those you don’t understand, particularly for people whose actions are hurtful or dehumanizing. I’m not saying not to assign the labels, I am more than aware of how helpful they can be to cope with a stressful situation, I am saying to add a little sticky note to the wall you raise in your mind to remind you that, while useful, the wall is but a veneer, a helpful lie to get you through difficult times, but a lie all the same. This should allow you to, if not entirely transcend bigotry, at least be far more ready to accept when you’ve fallen into it, and then subsequently escape it. The worst thing you can do to yourself is convince yourself that you know the absolute truth about anything. There will always be something you don’t know, and that is okay.
And to be clear, the second you lose sight of this idea, and fall into believing that some group is truly described by the label you gave them, you have become bigoted. You have become the very thing you claim to despise. You have become the problem. Don’t allow yourself to do this. There is no group of humans on earth, no matter how they may appear, who are anything less than human. Everyone, I mean everyone, is worthy of compassion and respect in so far as, at the very least, the bare minimum acceptance that their feelings are real, and their needs are real. This may make you feel uncomfortable, this may make you feel icky, but it is nonetheless the right thing. Because the second you refuse to listen, the second you believe yourself a better authority on a person than the person themself, you have practiced discrimination. Do not invalidate another person’s experiences, they are every bit as real as yours.
So I ask you, do you truly believe that you are above bigotry? Are there any groups that you jump to conclusions about before hearing their side of the story? Are there any groups that you assign personality traits to with complete disregard for their individuality? Please consider these questions deeply, and reflect.
Tldr: Discrimination is the result of blanket generalizations of a group without recognizing the inherent lie in such generalizations. Generalizations such as those are dehumanizing, and the core of what allows for bigotry. Reflect and consider, are you secretly a bigot? If so, rise above it—become better!

Fate Lies Not In Our Stars
Tumblr media
“I’m back to magical thinking,” the woman emailed. She was expecting a devastating medical report after a series of tests. The reply I sent back came after a moment of pondering. “I’m imagining the doctors have misread the original data. It happened to me.” To give false hope is wicked, but medical mistakes do happen and are more plausible than magical thinking.  As Alexander Pope wrote, “To err is human.” The aphorism, too mundane to serve as poetry, is a truism. Experts can’t think of everything. The toddler who penetrated the impenetrable fence around the White House is proof. Error is why we age. The process is a distillation of repeated biological mistakes. Meant to keep us in good repair, our RNA sometimes blunders when it mends our DNA. One or two mistakes are tolerable, but when they accumulate, our bones become fragile and our eyesight fades. Diet and exercise may slow the decay, but death is inevitable. Dissolution may be part of Nature’s evolutionary plan yet I marvel that blunder is at the heart of it.    Because we are fallible creatures, we create fallible societies. The mightiest empires crumble. Sometimes, the fault lies in our stars.  Prolonged droughts or floods trigger mass migrations. But war, political corruption, and the destruction of the environment are human accomplishments.     China and Russia have stubbed their toes on their way to empire because ill-considered decisions have left their countries with younger generations too small to support older ones. China’s One Child Policy, though no longer enforced, will see its population halved by the end of the century.  Vladamir Putin’s Ukraine war hastens a decline that was already in place. After years of dictatorships, its demoralized men don’t live long enough to become fathers.  They die early from alcoholism and despair. Elsewhere, populations are also in decline.  Contrary to the belief that humans will one day overrun the planet, our growth will peak at 8.5 billion in 2040.  After that, an implosion will follow, posing a danger similar to the one China and Russia face.  Americans opposed to immigration take note. Our population is also on a downward trajectory.     Anti-abortion laws that force women to give birth won’t help.  Nor will denying affordable childcare to working mothers to keep them at home.  They work because they must. Harsh policies place an undue burden on them and increase the risk of developmental and health problems in their children. Equally regressive are proposals to end no-fault divorce, forcing women to remain in unhappy marriages. Men would be equally affected, but historically, women suffer more.  After no-fault divorce became law, women endured lower incidents of domestic violence, spousal homicide, and female suicide.  Efforts to control a woman’s womb overlook the obvious. These efforts do not affect climate change, a pending disaster that threatens the species. Technology may save us, but being a human invention, it has its flaws. Many fear Artificial Intelligence will one day make avatars our masters.   Even so, an error has its virtue.  We learn from it. Knowing we are flawed should make us humble. Knowing we are flawed should make us forgiving.  When we forgive, we exercise compassion. Everyone knows what compassion is–the recognition that we belong to one another.   ___________________________  3rd book cover teaser before the June reveal

I'm basically an ecology major (I took Two Classes and think I'm a big shot now) (that was a joke but also I’m planning on switching into the major) so here are my thoughts on the animal portion, since abiotic factors are less in my wheelhouse:
ON LIFESPANS
This article by NPR notes that larger animals actually tend to live longer because their hearts beat more slowly.
Also, I believe the general rule is that smaller species generally have shorter lifespans, but can reproduce more children at a time, whereas larger species have longer lifespans but produce fewer children. Living longer also typically allows animals to reach larger sizes.
That aside: size is not usually the thing to consider in lifespans; what usually is considered is life histories (which, admittedly, size is a part of). Creatures with "faster" life histories live and die fast. Creatures with "slower" life histories take longer to grow up, but usually live longer. There are rodents and bats that are similar sizes, but the rodents have shorter lifespans, due to differing life histories.
Some factors in life history other than size (that thus are typically linked to lifespans) are:
How many children are usually produced
How much parental care is provided
How quickly the organism reaches sexual maturity
These are all related to each other. Creatures that produce more children at a time typically have less parental care to offer to each child; thus, because there is a higher chance for each child to die, children usually reach sexual maturity fairly quickly so they can reproduce for the survival of their species and such. This would be a fast life-history, which is what we see in rats. On the other hand, creatures that produce less children at a time have more parental care to offer to each child; thus, the children can take their time growing up and reach sexual maturity at a later age. This would be a slow life-history, and is what we see in us.
The rats, despite their significantly larger size, seem to be on the same life history schedule as their Overland counterparts, based on how quickly the Bane grows and I believe Ripred says it only takes about a year for them to mature (like you said). So theoretically they should also have the same lifespan as their Overland counterparts (longest rat lifespan on record is about seven years). But that would mean Ripred is probably about to croak and also younger than Gregor and possibly even Lizzie, and it seems very unlikely that is the case, based on the history Ripred has had with Vikus, Solovet, and being alive long enough to have met Hamnet and seen Luxa when she was a baby, and just in general, so maybe there's some kind of Underland food or chemical in the water that changes their lifespan lmao.
However, this life history rule (and most things in ecology), are all only general trends. There are very few rules in ecology that are universal, and there are always exceptions to everything (you'll notice larger dogs tend to have shorter lifespans than smaller dogs, although given that dogs are very much the result of artificial selection, I'm not sure this is the best example, but still). So we could also say that.
ON SIZE
So since a larger size wouldn't necessarily lead to the Underland animals dying sooner, there's no reason for them not to grow that large. But it doesn't mean there has to be no reason (does that make sense? I feel like it's contradictory)
My theory is just with humans out of the picture, and fewer species in the Underland in general that mainly occupy different habitats, they were able to just grow. Size has its benefits (harder to predate on, and probably other stuff I am forgetting).
ON INTELLIGENCE
Human intelligence likely came into play around the time when our brains gained more volume (I took one anthropology course too so now I'm just insufferable) (again, also a joke). Us being smarter was evolutionary beneficial, so our brains just kept getting bigger and bigger. Since the animals are all larger, perhaps their brain volume also increased as they evolved. And again, the relative lack of competition (no humans, and relatively distinct/noncompetitive areas of the Underland to inhabit), means they were able to spend more time just making huge evolutionary gains, so perhaps given that, they were all able to separately evolve intelligence?
Also, even aboveground there are species showing signs of early civilization that we previously used to categorize as Human Only Things (ex. being able to plan for the future, using tools). Now this doesn't answer other questions, like: why do the animals all speak English specifically? Were the humans too dumb or stubborn to learn their language (not unlikely), and the animals were all desperate to be able to communicate with them (questionable likeliness)? But yeah, the explanation for why the animals are intelligent does not need to be as rooted in "it's a fantasy book" as much as one might like it to be lol. But also fair, every story should just have giant talking bat rights.
Tl;dr: Conclusions good more or less, reasoning/details a little bit off, from my understanding. Very impressed with the level of thought you put into this though, especially for not being a bio person!
Edited: I reread the post and realized you mentioned a couple things I forgot to address
My fan theories about how the Underland works
In today's @returntoregalia episode had some interesting tangents about how the creatures probably couldn't survive in the Underland. There wouldn't be enough air, the air wouldn't circulate, and larger creatures die sooner than smaller creatures because their hearts have to work harder. The correct answer is obviously "It's fantasy", but I still think there are some clues that can give a plausible psuedoscientific explanation of how this can work.
Where does the air come from? The overland, specifically the currents. That massive amount of air being pulled in and out of the Underland is what is recirculating the air and keeping it breathable. This is sort of passing the buck, since the currents are never explained and are one of the few purely magical parts of the worldbuilding, but I believe that is the purpose they serve. There is something in the Underland, could be magical or some strange natrual phenomenon that's not explained yet, that flushes out the dead air pulls in fresh air. Sometimes Overlanders like Gregor get caught up in it and it allows for safe passage between the two lands. Sandwitch specifically sought out the Underland because he saw visions of the surface being uninhabited (headcannon: nuclear war), so it's possible that the underland wouldn't actually save them in the event of that happening because it relies on air from the surface, but you can't really blame him for not understanding that.
Why are the animals so big? Yes, larger animals die sooner, but they also are much more efficient because of the Square-Cube Law. "This principle states that, as a shape grows in size, its volume grows faster than its surface area." Energy lost as heat is a function of surface area, which means that larger animals have to eat less often than smaller animals. Mice can starve to death within days whereas a human can stay alive for weeks without food. In places where food is scarce and temperatures are low, like the open ocean and deep sea, we see lots of animals evolve gigantism. If you go deep in the ocean you'll find lots of animals that look like the ones at the surface just scaled up (and yes there's more than one factor that contributes to that, but the caloric efficiency of gigantism is one of those). In a cave environment where calories are scarce it would make sense for everything to get bigger to conserve energy. As for them dying sooner, who's to say that they don't all die pretty early. The oldest creature we see is a cockroach on the code team, but basically everything else besides humans aren't given an age. Maybe Gnawers only live to be like thirty, maybe Ripred is an old geezer who's about to keel over. Most people die in wars anyways, so longevity isn't really a concern. The fact that Rats can grow up from pups to adults in about a year leads me to believe that they die off early and their whole society has made peace with and is designed around that fact.
When it comes to why the animals are all intelegent... that where there's no explanation beyond fantasy book, and that's fine. You could make an argument that with the added stresses and challenges of finding food in the underland intelegence would be important, but also complex brains are a huge caloric sink so it's more efficient to be dumb and specialized. The truth is that no one should ever have to justify having big talking bat friends in their story. Every story should have those without needing to explain their reasoning.

Twst Species headcannons
Beastmen:
-Palms and bottoms of their feet are rougher and more padded, as well as a slightly darker shade than their normal skin tone
-Legs are built similar to the hind legs of animals (with the sharp angles and little bumps)
-Start “walking” as children on all fours because it’s more comfortable due to the way their legs are built
-Many have scars under their bottom lip due to accidentally biting it bc their fangs were longer after losing their baby teeth
-Similarly, they also have small scars across various parts of their bodies due to their claws
-They can see in the dark to an extent
-Their eyes also do the glowy thing in the dark, as well as on camera
-Beastmen have very thick and coarse hair, which makes it notoriously harder to cut
-Many lion beastmen especially do not cut their hair often, as their hair symbolizes strength within their communities
-Cutting ones hair is a sign of trust in beastmen communities, considering how guarded they are with who touches their head (Patting a beastman’s head is a quick and easy way for them to get their guard down, and it takes them off high alert) as well as their ears being within constant danger near scissors.
-Beastmen do shed, a lot, like, a lot a lot
-They have been known to growl and purr like their animal counterparts, as well as hunch their backs and snarl when threatened
-Baby beastmen will bite you, as a sign of affection. They also wrestle with their caretakers from a young age to show affection as well. Grown beastmen will let the younger beastman win, regardless of species
-They also play wrestle with mates and potential mates to show their interest and affection. Not too hard, but enough to jostle the mate around. They will be absolutely smitten if the mate does it back.
-Beastmen grow up using the same sounds their animal counterparts do, as its similar to being taught a first language that the rest of your family speaks. Most aren’t taught English (Or commonspeak since England is nonexistent in Twisted Wonderland) until later in life
-Beastmen can understand similar dialects and tones of other species, and can further understand and speak a little bit of other beastmen languages
-They cannot eat certain foods that their mother species can’t. Canine beastmen cannot eat chocolate, onions, etc, feline beastmen cannot eat onions, garlic, grapes, etc etc without having issues afterwards. (This makes them a target for pranksters on NRC’s campus. Ex: The incident of Heartslabyul’s Ace Trappola switching out all the tea for coffee during the unbirthday party and Chenya unfortunately missing the cues and drinking the whole cup)
-They are very territorial to anyone besides the clan they reside with. The only people they aren’t territorial with are young children, although they are on high alert if the child’s guardian is nearby
-Beastmen will adopt a child if they see it doesn’t have a clan to stay with, regardless of species. It’s not unheard of to see a beastchild of another species or a young human in beastman clans
-I saw a hc that said that Rook is mixed beastman/human so I’m gonna roll with that for the next one: Beastmen and human mixed babies can have the same attributes as beastmen but on a tamer scale. Their vision, hearing, sense of touch and smell could be higher than a human’s but not as high as a beastmans. The ears and tail are the more dominant gene but it’s not uncommon to see a mixed beastmen/human child with more human features
-Beastmen grow larger than most humans, with the average beastmen (under the right conditions) ranging around six ft at full height. Female hyena beastmen grow taller than their male counterparts
Mer:
-They’re hypersensitive to sunlight at first and have to wear sunglasses or something shading their eyes their first few weeks on land
-They also get dehydrated very easily even in human form, so they have to carry around water bottles
-Their skin dries out quickly, so their hands and feet especially will be very dry and potentially cracking unless they moisturize often
-They have a lot of back and leg pain because they’re not used to gravity pulling them down
-Can also see in the dark very well due to living at the bottom of the ocean
-Their hair is also very thin and silky, but separated into thick chunks, almost looking like scales from a distance. Furthermore most Mer don’t like having longer hair due to the amount of effort it takes to maintain it, with currents twisting it up and the high chances of it getting stuck between rocks and coral
-Most mer have the habit of picking up whatever’s nearby and eating it raw, due to the fact that their bodies can process it. It’s not uncommon to see a mer picking a crab off the side of their house and plopping it into their mouth.
-They have no problem with eating the fish they are associated with, and they do not consider it cannibalism since they aren’t exactly the same species. (Meaning the Tweels can eat eel and Azul can eat octopus without any problems)
-Baby mer can swim around at a very young age (from just a few days old), and mature faster than most other species in the first few weeks of their lives
-Azul has horizontal, rectangular pupils
-Aside from cecaelia, most mer do have slanted pupils that change shape depending on the danger in the area.
-Mer communicate under the water using clicks and chitters similar to echolocation, and could choose to not learn commonspeak as they don’t interact with humans as much as beastmen
-They are born with teeth and can eat smaller fish from birth (or hatching, depending on the species)
-They’re not mammals, so they don’t have nips I think
-They don’t choose to wear clothing or accessories unless it’s for a formal event or a family heirloom
-Back to the birth thing I think mer eggs are very easy to lose due to the harsh climate of the ocean. Many mer settle for only having a child or two due to how hard it is to raise a child there. Jade and Floyd also hatched from the same egg, meaning they were on the smaller side as babies
-Mer babies also bite to show affection, and will wrap their tail around their guardians when they feel scared or nervous
-Cecaelia babies are well known for sticking to their guardians for the first few weeks of their lives, and are very difficult to pry off due to the strength of their tentacles (And when they do theres little marks left across their backs, stomachs, shoulders, etc from the suction cups) (I’m sorry i cant stop picturing tired momma ashengrotto walking around w little marls on her and baby azul still stuck to her like 👁👁)
-I know this is a little far fetched and is nowhere near mentioned in the game or comic but I have a feeling the tweels have a hard time seeing out of their gray eye? Like coming from the same egg they maybe took some features from the other or they had a difficult development while in there (or maybe I just know nothing abt twins)
-Incredibly territorial, especially towards members of different species.
-Most mer have skin pigmented similar to their tail color as well as thick layers of scales (if their species permits) around their throats, their sides, their arms, and around their ear fins (It throws me off how Azul and the Tweels are the only ones with different skin tones- like you’re telling me you have two teal mer and a black and white mer but the guards at the museum had just blue tails and absolutely no other signs of being a mer??? Give us green Rielle pls and thx)
-Mer grow much larger than humans and beastmen, and don’t stop growing until their twenties.
-They also have markings on their torso, tail, and face that’s similar to others in their families. Normally you can tell which mer is from which family depending on the markings said mer has
-Similar to beastmen tails and ears, mer can be read by their fins. In extreme emotion, mer’s fins will flare out or flatten against their body when they feel threatened.
-They don’t know how to drink things when they get to the surface. I think they’d struggle with the idea since you can’t drink underwater or else the liquid will go everywhere (but then how’d Azul make those potions???)
Fae:
-Also hypersensitive to sunlight, which results in many fae being nocturnal.
-Older fae have been known to go days without any sleep with little to no repercussions. Younger fae have more difficulty with this.
-They have a stronger immunity to magic, and often potions crafted by them are well known to be more potent due to this fact
-Fae speak many languages, with many smaller species talking in little chirps and bell like noises, with bigger species talking in low growls and hissing noises. Fae on opposite sides of this cannot understand each other, but each species of small fae can understand other small fae, and larger ones can understand other large ones, even if there’s a difference in language.
-All of them can practice transformation magic without the use of a spell or potion, regardless of genetic makeup. It’s not uncommon to see large dragons or other reptiles walking the streets of the Valley pf Thorns, nor is it too uncommon to see small “floods” or floating fire balls in more secluded areas of the woods
-Fae grow the largest out of all the groups, but have control over their size due to their transformation magic. They don’t stop growing until they appear the same age as thirty (but is actually a much longer time considering their lifespans)
-Because of this fae take much longer to mature from birth/hatching (I like to think 1 normal year= 80~ years) (So An 80 y/o fae would only be equal to a one year old in any other species)
-Very reserved in their relationships with other fae and especially species. I think the cultural differences between other fae is enough to create a large gap between them, and most fae understand the difference in life span between them and other species, so they actively go out of their way to avoid forming relationships with them. (I feel like this is a part of why Sebek is so abrasive towards humans. I mean, his life span has to be different even if he’s only half, so he might be using his anger to deflect his own feelings about eventually having to lose his human father and Silver, as much as they bicker. Poor guys just in denial and trying to protect himself :(()
Human:
-Humans who grew up around magic users have more resilience to magic and potions (meaning Mc/Yuuken, who grew up in a world without magic at all, is more susceptible and will be effected longer by the side affects of potions and spells, or the spells will pack more of a punch and be potentially more dangerous)(Meaning they could take a sleeping potion meant to give the user a full nights rest and be out for a week straight)
-The chances of a human’s unique magic leaning in one direction depends on the area they live in and what resources they have available (I can’t think of anyone else’s unique magic who does this but Kalim’s oasis maker is a big example. He mentioned they had difficulty getting water on the Land of the Hot Sands so maybe that could have been a factor that altered the makeup of his magic. Like a demand and supply type deal?)
-Magical human’s pupils also change shape when they’re using their magic. I like to think that whenever it’s being used their pupils are blown wide to the point where you can hardly see their actual eye color
-Either that or their eyes glow
-Magic using humans are typically stronger, but have lower endurance than non magic users. This is due to the strain that’s put on their bodies even when magic isn’t in use. There are potions they can use to lessen these effects, and many choose to naturally boost their endurance through various activities, but they have to work harder than non magic using humans

More Jewish Elden Ring thoughts
@znarikia said:
This is a very interesting reading, thank you for writing and posting it.  What do you make of the One Great and the status of the Omen, misbegotten, and albinaurics?
1. The “One Great”
I had to look up the "One Great" since I'd never encountered the name in game. Seems to me to be a fiction invented by the Frenzied Flame as propaganda. We already know it likes to imitate or impersonate G-d through using Fingers as its messengers, so it would be in character for it to also claim some relation in an attempt to legitimize itself and help convert visitors.
While it’s true that G-d did also create “torment, despair, affliction, every sin, every curse”,[1] this is not necessarily a mistake, certainly not one that can or should be solved by genocide. Judaism acknowledges that G-d being singular and all-encompassing implies that G-d is responsible for what we humans consider evil as well as good, and this is accepted.
Take for example the phrase baruch dayan emet, “blessed is the true judge”, used when a great person dies or something else we find unjust occurs. Or the Mourner’s Kaddish, which makes no actual mention of death and is really about G-d’s greatness. The Jewish people are no stranger to bad things happening,[2] and so we make peace with it how we can. There’s certainly no need to scour the world with yellow flame.
2. Marginalized people of the Lands Between
To clarify, the latter half of my question isn't meant to be a gotcha, but rather if you think it's an issue with the Prophet, G-d, the broader faithful, or something else entirely.
Thanks for the clarification, and yeah it is kind of fucked up how the demihumans and similar are treated. I’m not sure if we’re ever given any canonical information on the origins of Omens or misbegotten, but we do know at least that Omens are a very old phenomenon.[3]
My guess is that they’re a relic of the Crucible, from when the world and its life were still in the process of creation and forms were not yet standardized.[4] They have horns, and tails, and various bits of anatomy we don’t consider “human” in the present day. The Torah states that G-d created the world in six days and rested on the seventh; here maybe the process was a bit lengthier. In a way, the evolution of species from the primordial Crucible seems almost to be the Law of Regression run in reverse for a while, in the interest of creating order and civilization.
I would therefore call Omens a product of G-d just as humans, and no fault lies with the Greater Will for their treatment. Once, in prehistoric times their traits were more common and were in fact valued,[5] so I would have to chalk it up to mainstream humanity losing sight of b’tzelem Elohim and coveting an ideal of perfection through uniformity -- and we all know “purity” doctrines never work out well in the end.
As for albinaurics, they are said to be “lifeforms made by human hands”[6] and then subsequently abandoned over perceived flaws. There’s not much said on the matter, but there’s a hint in the mention of their chosen land, the Haligtree.[7] It’s possible the human hands that made them were Miquella’s, another attempt at an alternative to the Golden Order by someone who had asked the impossible of it and left rather than accept the truth. After all, they are supposedly created from a “primordial drop of dew”,[8] strikingly similar to the stories of blessed sap from the young Erdtree.
Once again, it seems to be humanity’s all too common dislike of anyone who looks different that’s to blame for their plight. Even if they are “untouched by the Erdtree’s grace”,[6] that’s no excuse to mistreat them. I’m not familiar with any actual rabbinic rulings on artificial lifeforms, but I do know the albinaurics are alive and conscious and that ought to be enough. It may help to think of them as humanity’s children rather than inventions, and anyone born to a Jewish mother is Jewish, no matter what.[9]

In your meta on Why the Volturi are Necessary, you hypothesize that Aro is lying about humans being a threat to vampires. But how does that square with Maggie being present? She detects lies and compulsively calls them out. It’s a big reason her human family left her behind. (And I think the guide might mention another vampire present with a similar ability.)
So doesn’t that mean that likely either Aro was telling the truth (meaning vampires are more vulnerable than previously thought), or Maggie went against her nature and didn’t call him out (implying Edward also knew and also chose not to call him out)
(Anon is referring to this post.)
My theory on why the Volturi are necessary is based on what vampires are in the Twiverse, how the Volturi function, and the worldbuilding we see.
For me to be wrong, for humans to pose a threat the way Aro wants his audience to believe in Breaking Dawn, vampires have to be significantly weaker and easier to kill than what has been consistently shown throughout the books, or Twilight takes place in a parallel universe where human military technology is vastly more deadly and advanced than it is in ours. We'd be in AU territory.
As it is, Aro's speech getting past Maggie and Edward has an explanation that makes sufficient sense to me.
Edward was never going to be a problem. Anyone can block him, they just need to know how his gift works (sometimes not even that, as there are people who don't even know he has a gift who end up accidentally blocking him). Aro touched Edward earlier that year and knows Edward's gift better than anyone, and he came to that clearing mentally prepared. Aro is visualizing an exponentionally increasing amount of sheep in an ever-expanding field for this trial.
Even if something caught Aro off guard during that trial and a thought he didn't want made itself known, the missile speech was planned. His mind was prepared for that.
Sorry, but Edward's getting blocked.
Maggie is more interesting, but I think this one explains itself as well.
Because what is truth?
Aro says human technology could kill them all. And that's the truth. We have the means to destroy a city, a country, the world at large could become a nuclear wasteland overnight. The threat is real, and should knowledge of vampires get out an interspecies war, or a panic, might erupt, and things could get extremely destructive. Even if some vampires can survive the apocalypse itself, humans won't, and then the surviving vampires starve to death.
Is that the only truth, as in, is it the Volturi raison d'être, no. Aro wouldn't have created the law a thousand years ago if humans with their nukes was truly the reason.
However, it is a factor, and that makes his words the truth.
For that matter, it could very well be Maggie sensed a general dishonesty coming off of him for that speech, but she would expect this. If she doesn't know what Aro is being dishonest about, though, the point is moot.
As it is, Maggie's power appears to be rather black-and-white.
I'll use an example from Breaking Dawn.
(For context, Renesmée just did her show-her-lifestory thing, and "Please?" is her asking him not to murder her entire family.
Aro, on his end, can't guarantee that. He has never encountered a hybrid before, and can't know that Renesmée won't become a problem in the future. But, he is consistently a very polite character, so he's still going to be nice to her. Especially since she is, you know, a child.)
Renesmee relaxed back into my arms, her little face very serious.
“Please?” she asked him.
His smile turned gentle. “Of course I have no desire to harm your loved ones, precious Renesmee.”
Aro’s voice was so comforting and affectionate, it took me in for a second. And then I heard Edward’s teeth grind together and, far behind us, Maggie’s outraged hiss at the lie. (Breaking Dawn, page 442)
Yes, he tells a lie, but Renesmée is also a three month old five-year-old-looking child who's scared for her family. There's this thing called white lies, we tell them to children sometimes to reassure them. And, based on word choice and body language, that's what Aro was trying to do.
It seems to me he couldn't win here. He could of course say "oh I see, this never before seen species that drinks blood can't possibly grow up to be a problem for anybody. I'm not going to investigate this further at all. Toodledoo, fellas" and be celebrated for it, but I for one would not consider him fit to rule. Someone has to make tough choices sometimes and Aro has appointed himself to be that person. If he doesn't want to follow through, he can step down.
Back to what he said to Renesmée, the guy's options here were a) ominous silence, b) brutal honesty, c) ambiguous "I hope I won't have to harm your loved ones" type phrasing, or d) white lie. I repeat that he couldn't win here, because he went with the best option of the four and tried to reassure her, and people started hissing at him. That villain, he was nice to a toddler!
So, yes, Maggie does catch straight lies. Aro knew he was lying, and that meant she did too. Edward knew by extension, for that matter, good for him.
However, Maggie's gift is an ambiguous one, because truth by its very nature is ambiguous. Everything is a lie if you look hard enough into it or get very philosophical about it, and vice versa. The lived human experience is subjective, and that means we can't objectively experience reality. Maggie's gift is a denial of all that, it's an attempt to force the world into boxes of "truth" and "untruth", and that is going to give her a handicap similar to Alice or Edward's, as her gift affects the way she interacts with the world around her to the point where she can't do so normally.
Point being, yes I think Maggie can be lied to.

[More] Obey Me Headcanons
[ I didn’t edit this at all, really, but I have around 30 headcanons so far that I’m using for my fic and would like several backups- so, I’m posting it here.)
The ‘Devildom’ is a planet that is larger than ours. ‘Hell’ refers to a part of each territory the Avatar’s govern that is reserved for retaining and torturing human souls. These areas are actually quite small compared to the rest of the land. Each environment is unique, with its own native flora, fauna, land formations, climates, and dangers.
The Devildom resides on a tall, mountain-ringed plateau that towers over the lands around it. It is not the tallest point in the demon world.
Demons have elemental affinities that also define certain weaknesses. A demon that’s used to the heat and gasses of flowing magma would have difficulties in the colder parts of the world, or fighting against a demon or creature who uses a lot of freezing attacks.
There are many places in their realm that even Demons refrain from going, or simply cannot. One such area is a vast frozen land in the far northeast that drops to temperatures low enough that even demons that are developed for icy area’s cannot survive without magical assistance. However, this also makes the area a great place for criminals and the exiled to live should they be able to fight the cold. Demons and such that failed to pass the test of the cold are frequently found encased in the tall, pointed ice spires that jut from the ground- trapped in an unending preservation until the end of days.
There’s a massive crater in one part of the world, in the land Mammon governs, that’s referred to as the ‘Fear Pit’. It’s the aftermath of a massive battle between two demons, and the entire area is cursed with illusions that prey on your fears. It gets worse the closer you are to the bottom. Demons occasionally travel to test their own resolve, though few ever make it to the center- usually opting to turn back before their fear drives them mad.
Beelzebub dislikes thunder because it sounds similar to some sounds he heard in the war
Demon’s are immortal only in that time cannot destroy them, They can still die from wounds and even disease.
Not all demons can speak human languages. There’s plenty in the Devildom/Hell who’ve never set foot in the human realm and have never bothered to learn the realms languages.
On that note, there are more than a few specific demonic dialects spoken in the devildom. The Avatars and most high nobility are required to be fluent in the most common 3 demonic languages.
Demons who came to the Devildom by falling from the Celestial Realm are not considered ‘true demons’, and many have challenged the Avatars solely because of their origins
Demons may have pacts with multiple humans. If a demon who has more than one pact is ordered to do something by multiple pact holders, the demon will obey whoever has the strongest bond with them OR the orders will cancel each other out.
Many species found in the Devildom/Hell and the Celestial Realm are not exclusive to one or the other- dragons and unicorns are found in both, for example, but with different traits and personalities. Dragons in the Devildom are ugly things that spit an acidic venom, while those in the Celestial Realm are sleek and able to shoot blasts of fire from their throats. Some creatures remain the same in each realm, but are referred to by different names. Many mythic creatures from every human culture can be found in both the Devildom and Celestial realm
Though their human forms look rather perfect, everyone who fought in the Celestial War bears a great number of physical scars, some of which affect their human guise as well
Belphegor's right eye is completely blind in all his forms. He tends to hide it in his human appearance because it’s sometimes seen as a weakness by other demons who might try to challenge him. He has the most trouble with demon’s attempting to fight him because he’s often seen as the weakest Avatar due to his sleeping habits and general outward appearance. This is, of course, a massive mistake.
Belphegor frequently wraps his tail around himself (like a hug) for comfort- particularly when he’s alone
Belphegor’s horseshoe was broken during a fight with a demon who wanted to challenge his title/status.
Demons don't usually bury their dead because many simply disappear upon death. How they disappear depends on their primary sin (Wrath erupts in a blast of fire)
Leviathan changes the order of the smiley pins on his clothes depending on his mood (green for happy/content, yellow for neutral, red for angry/upset)
Satan dislikes chocolate
Demons are practically infertile. Children born naturally (human standard) are extremely rare. As such, all demon children are cherished and protected by modern demonic societies as a whole, and intending to harm one is punished harshly.
Lucifer may have birthed Satan from rage, but a demon can create another being from any emotion so long as it’s powerful enough (love, envy, etc). This is much more common than the physical way of creating children. The offspring will generally exhibit whatever emotion spawned them and will behave accordingly to whoever the emotion was directed at. After their birth, they grow very fast until they appear 10-15 years old, and their growth slows immensely.
A specific ritual is required for a demon( or angel) and human to crossbreed with each other, as they are completely different species. It would be like trying to cross a dog with a giraffe. These births are always extremely dangerous for the human mother. There are a few exceptions to this, such as Incubi/Succubi but successful crossbreeding is still extremely rare.
The older a demon is, the more horrific their true forms are. Anyone who has existed before the Celestial War is referred to as an ‘Ancient/Old World’ demon. Those born after and those who fell are considered ‘New Age/Modern’ demons. There are a handful of creatures referred to as ‘Primordials’. These beings are neither demons nor angels, but are immensely powerful and are very secretive. Not much is known about any of them, and they rarely show themselves. They also rarely partake in the social/political conflicts of the three realms. They did not have a presence in the Celestial War.
These titles have no bearing on how civilised someone may be.
There are technically four realms known. The Celestial, Devildom, and Human realms are commonly spoken about but the fourth realm is known as ‘Oblivion’ and isn’t so much a world as it is multitudes of platforms floating throughout a nebula. It’s useless overall but is used as a prison and punishment for the worst of demonkind. Few have ever made it out, but those that have come back a blubbering, maddened shell of who they were. Diavolo and Barbatos both are capable of opening a portal to it.
All demons/Fallen have the capability to return to a monstrous form, but Ancient demons have a particularly difficult time making themselves look human again (some Ancient’s are incapable of returning at all). New Age demons are able to transform much more freely, but if the transformation is brought on by strong negative emotion (rage, fear, or a physical reaction such as pain), it takes much longer to change back
The final stage of demonic courtship involves seeing each other's truest self. This display is a form of trust in the highest regard, the goal being total acceptance of each other. It should never be taken lightly. Not every couple goes through this, but those that do form a deeply personal and permanent bond.
A demon in full form is rare outside battle, though some choose to remain in their appearance as a way of showing off.
Some demons (nobility and such) have several forms outside of their human/humanoid guises
Demons are compelled to chew on things. There are several businesses specializing in ‘demon chew toys’. Gnawing on these can release both stress and anxiety and also helps maintain healthy teeth.
Demons shed their horns, scales, teeth and fur, and will often use these shed materials in their own clothing, jewelry, and other such items. Shedding season differs for every demon- it happens to some every half year, year, couple years, or even centuries. Being given an item made from a demon’s shed is considered a personal gift
Demons can tell the basic emotional state of any human they have a pact with. Whether they react to it or care is another story.
Despite the common opinion that the Devildom doesn’t have a sun, the sky brightens every 3 human world days thanks to the passing of a dwarf star. However, it would be a mistake to believe that the demon world is devoid of light without it! There are plenty of natural light sources that provide the lands with a way to see (for those without night vision), such as glowing crystals and mushrooms, magma, etc.
The Devildom’s planet’s core burns hotter than ours, which counteracts how cold it would be otherwise (though it’s still quite chilly in many parts of the planet)
When Diavolo ordered that no human be harmed in the Devildom again, he also banned all media portraying humans as prey. These books, videos, and movies are now sold on the black markets and hoarded by those who disagree with Diavolo

THE ERRANTEL
[ More info below the cut! ]
Due to popular demand, I finally made a ref sheet for the species my Swap Benrey’s belongs to- the Errantel.
Their name, originally, had no human translation, since they are not from Earth. Benrey himself describes it as loosely translating to “Unkillable hobo”, though Tommy thought it was too long, and seemed... rude, almost. So, with the help of his friend Forzen, they came up with the term Errantel; a combination of the words for “immortal wanderer” in french.
Biologically, Errentel are very interesting species, as they’ve earned their reputation for being “unkillable”. They’re essentially the equivalent of giant, interdimensional tardigrades. They can withstand nearly all conditions- the vacuum of space, temperatures hot enough to usually make things combust, and temperatures nearing true zero. This grants them safety when they manage to worm their way through dimensions and travel to different planets that might be otherwise inhabitable.
Not only that, but they are also proficient at rudimentary “shapeshifting”- they can compress and expand the mass of their form, ranging from very very small to extremely large; rivaling skyscrapers. Their average size is normally a healthy in between- the size of a two-story house (the size that Benrey took during the final battle).
They can also shift the amount of limbs, mouths, eyes, and other features they possess, with some restrictions mentioned above. This allows Benrey to take an arguably very humanlike form to better fit in with his coworkers.  Their diet is extremely varied. Their near unkillable state and rapid healing is because of their physiology. In short- their body is made of completely different things than ours, so they need a wide range of nutrients and minerals to stay healthy and unkillable. This is what causes the most competition amongst them- sometimes even eating other Errantels for the specific nutrients in their bodies.
Socially, they’re sapient; generally human-level intelligence, sometimes slightly above (mostly due to their outstanding lifespans). How they are seen, however, varies wildly between dimensions, planets, species and societies. In some places, they’re considered normal people. They could, arguably, wander into a space McDonald’s and get a job, and be treated as a normal person. In other places, they’re considered wild beasts, to be avoided or even hunted for sport.
Amongst their own species, they’re pretty extreme. Honestly, because of their extreme lifespans and nearly unkillable status, the only thing keeping their population in check is... well, their own species, and the fact that they’re so widespread.
When an Errantel meets another (or honestly, any species they see as ‘equals’), they see them as competition. Rivals, in a sense. One of the few things that can truly threaten them. And so, their main goal is to remove that competition by any means necessary. This can go one of three ways:
Put enough distance between them that they don’t have to compete. This is pretty easily done, considering they can worm through dimensions and travel through the void of space to reach entirely new planets.
Kill each other. Errantels are, unfortunately, highly cannibalistic. The can and will eat other Errantels if they see them as threats, or even as weaker. Some of them will even eat their eggs and young in times of duress or if they simply don’t want to have any at the moment.
Become partners. And I don’t put that lightly- Errantel ‘partnerships’ are almost complete codependency; putting their full trust, safety, heart and soul into each other. They’ll trust each other with their lives, share their food, young- and even other partners. It’s not unusual to have a group of 2-5 Errantels all in a polyamorous partnership. This eliminates the competition and threat of death through a much more friendly way.
So, a meeting between two Errantels usually starts as a long winded display at a distance, dancing around each other and judging whether or not they’re going to partner up, fight, or flee. There are no half-measures among them- you will almost never see two Errantel hanging out together for fun. Though, of course, in a social situation, most of them can behave long enough to share a space in a formal environment (think about having to go to a meeting with your ex. Sure, you don’t like it and there’s tension, but you put up with it for formalities).
When communicating, Errantels use a communication system composed of a high-dense light, sound, and color they can expel from their mouth, which can help communicate emotions both visually and sensually (”Sweet voice”). My guide for Sweet Voice is the same one I use for the Errantels.  They’re very intelligent, however, and commonly learn other languages as well.
When it comes to reproducing, Errantel can go two ways. They can reproduce both sexually and asexually! All Errantels have both bits, so any Errantell can reproduce with another. When done sexually, it’s pretty much only ever with those they’ve partnered with- there’s very little ‘infidelity’ amongst partnerships, or even one night stands for single Errantels. The children produced are just like humans in where they can have features of both parents, though other mutations are pretty common.
When done asexually, it is something they can choose to do if they want a child but either don’t have any partners, or their partner can’t reproduce for some reason. Young produced this way are usually very similar to the parent- if not identical- but not always! Due to variations in DNA and self-alteration of sexual cells, as well as mutations, asexually produced young are usually slightly-off versions of the parent. Joshua, for example, was created this way- he’s almost identical to Benrey in every way except for a slightly different skin tone, and different colored eyes.
Also, because they don’t differ at all between what’s in their pants and travel so many dimensions, Errantel have little care for gender or how they’re perceived. Most will go by whatever neutral pronouns a language has, or will simply use any pronoun- though of course, some do enjoy being gendered and are free to do so.
Errantels also lay eggs. They’re usually in batches of 1-3; any larger and you risk the parents eating the extras to save resources. They’re usually the size of chicken eggs, and Errantel will often shift down smaller during this to hide away and go unnoticed.
A freshly hatched Errantel simply looks like a very small adult- except for the fact that their ‘fur’ is white instead of black, and they’re usually much more covered in it. As they become juveniles, their white fur quickly starts molting away into the signature black color.
Tumblr media
Once their fur is molted into being fully black, they’re technically able to survive on their own. However, good parents often keep them around much longer than this, until they’ve reached full and true maturity. Once they’re old enough, they usually voluntarily leave to go find their own territories and partnerships!
Errantels can continue to breed throughout their whole lifetimes, and so their territory will often be surrounded by the territories of their children- and so each child reared often has farther and farther to travel to reach an uninhabited space. This can be quite dangerous, but most make it. And thus,  the whole cycle starts again!
FAQ
So this is what your Benrey is? Sort of. Mainly just my Swap AU Benrey and Joshua- my other Benreys are all completely different, really.
What the fuck is your Swap AU? It’s my Roleswap AU for HLVRAI. Benrey is the scientist and Gordon is the guard, etc etc. You can find out more about it here, and this is the tag I have for it on my tumblr!
Can I make an OC of this species? Fuck yeah! Go nuts, dude! The only thing I ask of you is that 1) You give credit if anyone asks what they are, and 2) send them to me! I’d love to see them!
If I do make an OC/Use this species, does it have to be HLVRAI? Nope. Because they travel dimensions, they can arguably appear in any media- if you want you can use them for anything. Original universes, other fandoms, other AUs of any sort, etc etc! Same rules apply as above- credit, and I’d like to see them!
Can they be albino/melanistic/piebald? I’m gonna say yes because it’s cool as hell. Love that shit.
My question isn’t answered here! Help??? I have an ask box and you are 100% welcome to use it! I’d love to talk more about these guys and anything I didn’t cover.

Lin Kuei: Cryomancers
RELIGION <> ORIGINS / ARCHITECTURE <> FOOD <> FOR THE LIN KUEI <> ART <> CRYOMANCERS <> LIN KUEI SOCIETY <> MONEY & MATERIAL GOODS
The continuation of the morgianesffs-blog’s list of questions about Lin Kuei. I initially divided them into smaller categories and the cryomancers will be the subject of this essay.
For the formalities, the original questions:
Question about the Cryomancers. I know the game lore says that they are supposed to be rare, but I also know that the Lin Kuei have had at least 5 (grandpa, papa, older, and younger Sub Zero,  and Frost). 4 of which are part of 3 generations that inherited it even with mixed blood (I'm assuming Mama Sub Zero wasn't Cryomancer since they left her alone).
That's a lot of generations in a row for a rare trait... So do you think the Cryomancers as a group have figured out they're being hunted and have chosen to live in hiding?
Looking at the sources, my personal theory is that the true problem is not that cryomancers are rare per se but that not every of their descendents:
is capable of using ice powers.
will survive long enough to develop and control the freezing abilities
Johnny and Cassie Cage are the best analogy for point A - both are the descendants “of an ancient Mediterranean cult who bred warriors for the gods”[MK9!Johnny’s bio] and thus possess special - and at least in theory rare - genes. Johnny is one of the top Earthrealm Champions yet he, canonically, managed to use his inner power only once, in a fight against Shinnok to protect Sonya. When Cassie was born, she had a very high chance to inherit Johnny's rare genes and because of that was the potentially future champion. Coming from Briggs-Blade-Cage family gaves Cassie a lot of opportunities to develop her fighting abilities, first because of strong ties to military and later also to other meritorious Earthrealm defenders. Yet like father before, the inner power was activated only under strong pressure, while protecting her family from Shinnok. And despite all the access to additional powerful mentors (Raiden, Sub-Zero, Bo' Rai Cho, Fujin and maybe even Scorpion), she still struggles with mastering the power - and with using it at will. And let’s be real here, Cassie is a superb warrior in her prime of life - if someone like her struggles with mastering ancient power, most who happen to be also descendants of these warriors may never use it even once during their lifetime.
And here comes my feeling that Lin Kuei could have even dozen descendents of cryomancers at the same time yet only few will truly be able to discover their potential and even less to master it (and only one, the best, will use the title of Sub-Zero). It is outright said, that freezing powers are hard to control and are usually mastered at the latest stages of life, as we were told by Mythologies: Sub-Zero in-tie material:
Sub-Zero learned of his ability as a young adult. It was passed on to him by his father, a fourth generation Lin Kuei warrior himself. The ability to harness the element of cold is one that takes years of practice. It's full potential realized only by those who've mastered it at the latest stages of life. Sub-Zero's skills have the ability to develop much faster than those of the other Lin Kuei. [source]
By logic, if naturally cryomancers need years to get a grip of their power but Bi-Han’s skills developed much faster than the rest and it happened when he was already a young adult (a person in their teens or early twenties, max thirty?), then most cryomancer learn how to use their ability as an adult (25-30+ years old?). Now, considering the mortality of warriors in this brutal profession and harsh system of punishment, not many cryomancers will live enough to truly develop ice powers. They do, however, can pass the genes to the new generation and it seems as something happening from ancient times. Except not every baby with their special genes will be taken by Lin Kuei and though limited sources, it seems like female cryomancer are not the main target.
My personal theory for this is based around pregnancy and how difficult it must be to carry a child with special powers that may or may not manifest itself in the least expected moment. The conscious use of power of course requires experience and control but in the unborn child it could result from independent stimuli that affect both the child and mother. So a mother with cryomancer genes probably has a better chance to give birth to a healthy offspring and not to die in the process (thus producing another child(s)) than a full-blood human one. Also, the two known examples of the not taken by Lin Kuei female descendants of cryomancers were the youngest children (and in the case of MK Conquest TV series, one was born after her brother's kidnapping). So there is a possibility that Lin Kuei intentionally does not take every available child, in order to not "break the genealogical line" and in result, cut their source of new warriors.
(The other reasons I can think of why female cryomancers may not be the main target for Lin Kuei are:
A) some biological complications that makes female cryomancer with active ability much rarer, thus the uneven ratio of known Lin Kuei male to female ice warriors. This could fuel Frost’s ego (the rare example of female cryomancer with powerful freezing abilities) but also her anger for not recognizing her skills and/or right to the title of Sub-Zero by Kuai Liang.
B) cryomancer’s strong sense of family ties thus natural instinct to protect their own. So if a female ice warrior gets pregnant, taking the child from her could be a pretty hazardous thing, especially if blood-related cryomancers are somehow emotionally/psychologically bonded with each other. In the past, the one Grandmaster who wanted to punish (male) Sub-Zero for helping Great Kung Lao (who saved Sub-Zero's biological family) got killed in the process. And this Sub-Zero was kidnapped years ago so he knew his family only from some distant memories yet despite the lack of real interaction with biological parents and sister (born after his disappearance), he allied with the enemy to pay the debt and killed his superior without a second thought. Then we have MK9!Kuai Liang who against Grandmaster’s orders ran away from Lin Kuei to avenge brother’s death because the clan did not tell him what happened to Bi-Han. So it seems that once a biological family is threatened, the (male) ice warriors get pretty agressive and openly disobedient. Now imagine how far would a female cryomancer go if her child was put in danger by the clan. I mean, keeping cryomancers in check is a pretty hard thing on normal days and in times of family critical matters even worse.)
Another useful information comes from Grandmaster [MK Conquest TV series, episode 3 - Cold Reality] who said about then currently in-training Sub-Zero:
So rare. Centuries have passed since one such as this has been among us.
Which could be interpreted as either Lin Kuei did not have a cryomancer for centuries or did not have a cryomancer who developed strong freezing abilities so fast(?). I personally think it is the latter because cryomancer power is described as “ancient” and if there wouldn’t be any cryomancer for centuries, the knowledge about the ice-wielder could be lost and forgotten. Of course, as the Grandmaster, the man could be simply familiar with clan history and lore but dunno, it seemed like he knew what to expect and how to force still-in-training Sub-Zero to develop his powers. Which, in all honesty, was pretty brutal and from what was shown on screen, involved throwing hot coals on the warrior’s bare back. What is painful for a normal person, even more for someone whose body is built to withstand freezing temperatures, not the heat. So, either there was a book with all the bad tips on how to train cryomancer in case you get one or the grandmaster actually had some experiences to compare Sub-Zero abilities with other candidates and/or ice warriors.
Frankly, I have this really old theory of mine, that fleeing from Outworld cryomancers had a deal with Lin Kuei - in exchange for the help and shelter, the cryomancer agreed to give some of their children to the clan. Thus from ancient times, warriors with ice-powers served Lin Kuei and passed the duty from one generation to another. However, with the passing time and mixing with native people, their natural abilities regressed to the point some branches of the cryomancer family could be declared as extinct, as in, not possessing the right combination of genes. In result forgetting their own legacy only for the power unexpectedly activating generations later. In Mortal Kombat Conquest TV series, the family of a kidnapped years ago cryomancer boy did not have any(?) clue why Lin Kuei targeted them. Something similar could happen to Bi-Han and Kuai Liang in an alternative timeline, thus the unusual abduction mentioned in Kuai Liang’s MK9!BIO:
"An assassin of the Lin Kuei clan, Kuai Liang commands the power of ice and cold. Unlike other members of his clan, he and his older brother, Bi-Han, were abducted as children by the Lin Kuei and trained in the techniques of assassination throughout their lives [...]”
If that would be true, the Lin Kuei could keep eye on every known descendent of cryomancer species (run away or simply living in ignorance) and kidnap only a few selected children. Of course, some family members tried to hide their children from Lin Kuei, which was seen in the original timeline. In this case, the mother of Bi-Han and Kuai Liang tried to save them from their father, a faithful Lin Kuei warrior.
I will be honest here, I always thought that mom of ice bros was simply a normal but unlucky woman who somehow got involved in assassin clan matters. Yet Mythologies: Sub-Zero tie-in materials gave an interestingly input about the family situation:
Their mother wanted a normal life for her sons, who had already been chosen by the Lin Kuei to become warriors for the clan. She tried in vein to hide them from their father whose own life in America was only a cover for his true identity and purpose. Eventually they were found and their father returned with them to his homeland. Their mother and sister were never seen or heard from again.
The most standing out informations (hints):
→  the children weren’t randomly kidnapped but chosen by the clan. In the case of Bi-Han and Kuai Liang, the choice makes sense since they came from a family serving Lin Kuei for at least the last four generations (while their father alone was Sub-Zero himself). Yet their sister, most likely the youngest child, was not included. So she was still too young or wasn’t meant to become a warrior at all. Either due to lack of potential or because of some unknown to us clan politics forbidding taking all children. The most intriguing is how the clan determined who should be chosen or who left in peace. Like, was the clan so versed in genetic science to predict things like that or did they have other (magic?) ways to predict (check) whether it was worth taking the indicated child? Were the children prematurely tested before the decision was made?
Additionally, in MK Conquest TV series, the Grandmaster sounds pretty sure about Sub-Zero’s freezing abilities before the warrior himself started consciously use them:
“He has trained his whole life. His fighting skills are unmatched among us… yet it is only now that he truly begins… for it is his destiny to carry to battle ancient powers. The time has come to unleash them.” [Episode 3, “Cold Reality”].
What could explain why Lin Kuei took only the boy yet did not come for his younger sister born to the same parents (thus having in theory the same chances to inherit the wanted genes).
→ the mother seemed to be aware about Lin Kuei and the clan's interest in her children, so for all we know she actually could be one of them or be more involved in her partner (husband?)’s criminal activity. This is an interesting idea in context of her desire to give her sons a normal life. The mother tried but failed to hide the boys from Lin Kuei. She and the daughter weren’t seen nor heard of again what may imply both died… or, if mother was truly full trained Lin Kuei herself, she actually managed to run away with the daughter and hide so well. Anyway, if Kuai Liang and Bi-Han’s mother or sister survived long enough to give birth to another child, the Sub-Zero brothers could still have a biological family living somewhere, maybe even ignorant about the whole cryomancer legacy.
In summary, and this is really just my personal take on the matter, there are many more descendants of cryomancer species around the world than we know about. The problem lies in genetic variation that gives a freezing ability only to a handful of people. Some cryomancers were part of Lin Kuei for generations (and maybe get paired with genetically specific group of people for better breeding thus the continuity of ice warriors generations), some never learned about their true legacy and some knew and either seek out the clan (Frost) or tried shield their children from the cruel life of assassin. Sadly, it seems like Lin Kuei warriors were really good at tracking the right families to get children with certain abilities so even if at some point cryomancers decided to hide it did not save them in the long run. On other hand, cryomancer adepts are very stubborn and unwilling to let themselves forget about their biological family, so Lin Kuei balanced on thin ice with hunting down and training the descendants of cryomancers.

Enhypen Theory- Ruins & Rituals
So I've been watching Given/Taken alot lately for writing purposes and am curious about something....
What's with the weird monument?
Tumblr media
The beginning of the video starts with Jungwon standing in a desert with a bleeding nose, but we don't see this scenery again until the third "arc" of the music video, when the rest of the boys join him and immitate firing arrows at this broken monument of some kind- we later see them at night, dressed in their uniforms, dancing in front of it- though before this Jungwon is seen again slowly burning from (presumably) the sunlight
Tumblr media
But... what is it? What's the significance and why does the video open there? Why are they firing arrows? There are just so many questions and I, personally, haven't really seen this part of G/T addressed yet so I'm going to take a shot at it for my first HYBE theory! (I actually have been *following* HYBE theories for a few months now but I'm new to K-Pop in general so I've been quiet until now)
First, it's important to note that it stands out as odd from the rest of the video
The beginning and middle of the video have two primary locations with similar but still considerably different vibes-
Old fashioned clothes, indoors, a sense of containment and "other"ness, even though they aren't the same, you can still feel the connection to eachother- but that's completely removed in the desert scenes, wich are outdoors, in modern clothing, and present the boys with more individuality (IE: lacking uniforms)
And it makes me wonder if the ruins they're visiting are of their old testing facility
Let me break it down a bit better-
The two primary locations we see other than these ruins are a mansion-wich I'll, possibly incorrectly, refer to as "the orphanage" henceforth- and a testing/containment/research facility of some sort
At first I wondered if the ruins were simply the orphanage but that's clearly not the case as you can see the exterior of the mansion in one of the snapshots early on, it's very different looking- even the shape is extremely different, and it seems to be in a forest just below a hill, not in the middle of a desert
Tumblr media
What about the other place though? The facility- as I'll call it from here on- doesn't have the same deniability
In fact, we see a very similarly shaped building to the ruins during one of the snapshots, but we don't have any clear indication of what it is, why would it just randomly be there? Unless, ofcourse, it isn't random
Tumblr media
Initially I assumed the orphanage and the facility were the same place because the boys are wearing the uniforms in both locations, but I'm starting to think that isn't the case, and that the boys were moved to the facility after being experimented on at the orphanage
The thing is that vampires don't always turn when they're given the venom/virus/blood/whatever-it-is-that-turns them, and when this substance is manmade or engineered somehow, it takes even less frequently, this is true of all supernaturals, and again, is emphasized when the people attempting to make the transitions are humans experimenting with forces beyond their understanding, so it's typical of these practioners to have large "sample sizes" of potential experiments, often turning to hospitals, schools, and orphanages (to name a few) seeking the few candidates that can survive and thrive under these new conditions- from there they'll experiment on all of them until they get the desired result, and those select few will move on in the process to the next step
Sound familiar at all? I think this is further representative of the idol industry
We know that a big theme of Enhypen's storyline is going against the toxic nature of the idol industry, with songs like "Not For Sale" and "Mixed Up", and themes like being museum or display peices in "Let Me In", and the process of a large group of young boys being picked through and groomed until there are only a few left standing, who are then taken away from the "orphanage" and brought to a more intense experimentation/testing facility, sounds alot like idol-potentials who are on talent shows, win, and then assigned to a group and agency who put them through intense preperation for their debut
We know Enhypen went through that exact process on I-Land, so it's not a stretch to say this may be what they're referencing
But back to the ruins
You can see a definite difference in the way the orphanage looks vs the facility, wile the orphanage is a western style mansion that looks like it came from the late Victorian era- though, as Laina Sunflower pointed out, it does seem to have some modern conveniences like pen lights and electric fans- (the person conducting the experiments is also wearing a face mask, wich looks more modern from what I can tell)
Tumblr media
-the facility is seemingly more modern than that, and has a much less homey feel, resembling instead a more containment type of vibe- large areas of open space, large glass windows dividing one from another, and the boys all seem to have their own rooms to keep separated from eachother, very unlike the mansion where you can probably safely assume that they share rooms, as unlike the sleek, minimal style of the facility, is cluttered with children's toys, furnishings, and accents, and you get the vibe that the boys are allowed around eachother often, the entire feel is more casual, and considering the number of tables in the dining room, you can also safely assume that there are many more inhabitants of the orphanage than just Enhypen themselves, meaning that it's more likely they share rooms
We know what the outside of the mansion looks like, but we don't have as definitive of a space for the facility
Wile the tower in the snapshot is a bit different in shape from the ruins, they're similar enough, and the landscape is notably perfect for a facility containing baby vampires- a barren desert devoid of the one thing they need most (blood) and full of the one thing that can most harm them (sunlight), it would be like keeping Superman in a chamber beneath the red sun surrounded by kryptonite, there's very little chance of them escaping
There's also something particularly strange about the ruins, in that there's a LADDER hanging off of one side leading to the top of the facility
Tumblr media
The entire set up reminds me of the vampire facility in True Blood, and I wouldn't be surprised if the facility had this peculiar setup to make it even more difficult on the boys to possibly escape, I wouldn't even be surprised if these ruins are only a small portion of what's been left, maybe the original facility was a little in tune with the building from the snapshots before whatever happened to it... happened
There's also some other things I want to point out with this line of thought-
Sunghoon is kept in a room filled with orange light at one point, sitting on the edge of a bathtub-?- when his hand catches on fire
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some have theorized that this is Sunghoon's power, just like other boys have the power to levitate, hypnotize, and teleport, but what if that isn't it? What if that was the facility testing him in a room full of manufactured sunlight to see if he indeed burns in the sun? True Blood, again, has a similar theme (and it wouldn't be unusual for HYBE to draw influences from other popular media, what with TXT's frequent Harry Potter references)
Additionally, could this be in part about their escape from the facility? We see the boys make a running motion as though they're trying to get away, only to stop
We see something almost exactly the same in "Fever", but this time they succeed in seeming to go through the door to their freedom
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also wonder if the Victorian style clothing vs the French Roccoco style clothing is meant to show that there was a large gap between the time they were originally imprisoned and the time they got out?
This also fits with "Drunk Dazed", we see the mystery woman before the boys, still in their Rococo style clothes, performing a "ritual of blood" by pouring blood into the fountain, could the boys have been rescued, found, or "adopted" by **real** vampires after their, probable, human experiments? If the French Rococo style represents the boys during their escape period, this could make senses, and could also serve to explain, to a degree, their blood festivities in the first place
This doesn't make alot of sense though in terms of timing as the Victorian era is around two hundred years *after* the French Rococo period, so unless it's symbolic....
But I've wondered about the weird contrast between the boys being experimented into vampirism vs being turned naturally, as the mystery woman seems to heavily implicate that she herself is a vampire and that she's showing the boys a "natural" ritual, something that's part of the vampire community/species/way of life, but this is a giant contrast to the more clinical, experimentation vibe of what the boys had been going through in their orphanage/facility days; I'm reminded again of True Blood here, as well as "Bitten", "Servamp" (the manga), and plenty of others where the older, stronger vampires (or werewolves) free the younger ones from human captivity
Things I still haven't figured out or that I find most notable:
-Jungwon seems seperated from the others the most here, he's the one at the beginning with the nosebleed and the one catching on fire- something that doesn't happen to any of the other boys- and in one of the flashbacks he's the one standing outside of the orphanage banging on the window as the others go about their routines, and in “Fever” he’s the one left behind/last in line when everyone is running towards the door, he seems to be the "main" charector in Given/Taken, as he's the last one on screen revealing what everyone suspected: that they're vampires; he's also the one with teleportation, most prominantely seen in Drunk/Dazed, flittering around outside the room where Sunoo is pouring his blood into his glass and coming in between the two groups of three who, according again to Laina Sunflower, seem to be at odds with eachother
-Sunoo is also the one seen to be biting (or attempting to bite) Jungwon, this could be a really interesting nod to their relationship, the two seem to be connected in a special way (is this why Jungwon is outside Sunoo’s room in Drunk/Dazed, flittering around anxiously as though he’s not sure what to do with himself or isn’t sure what to do about something that’s bothering him?) Could Sunoo have been responsible for turning Jungwon, or maybe completing his transformation? Or even just feeding off of him, wich, in some lore, creates a special bond between two vampires?
-Speaking of Drunk/Dazed, we see the mansion reappear during their first "bloody birthday party"- when there was only one candle on the cake- does this mean that they celebrated their life as vampires before being transferred to the facility? Were they vampires for a fair amount of time- several months or maybe even a year or two- before being taken away?
-Why are they immitating firing arrows? They don't seem to be *actually* doing this, just mimicking it, why expose themselves to the sun just for something symbolic? Is it a repetition of something they've done before? Did they originally destroy the facility themselves? Or it it something else..?
If anyone has any ideas definitely let me know, HYBE is my new favorite thing for theorizing!

Aliens Among Aliens
I still remember the day the earthlings touched down onto our planet. Everyone who was alive that day does. It wasn’t a majestic, dramatic landing like you’d see in movies, they crashed through that atmosphere at hundreds of miles per hour, landing in one of our cold oceans. Rescue parties immediately made their way to the ship. Their entry had been broadcasted across the entire planet.
Few planets in the galaxy trusted the earthlings enough to allow them to visit, seeing how they angrily raged war on themselves. It wasn’t like any of us were any better, though. We’d had our own fights, inner-world and outer. My planet had made peace with the earthlings long ago, however.
Our atmospheres were quite similar, enough so that the earthlings could breathe well enough on our planet without protection, and vice versa. A young woman had been leading the visiting earthlings, a scientist who was eager to study our planet. Among her was a historian, a reporter, an ambassador who was one of our own, a captain for their ship, and the ship’s crew.
The scientist, who I would later get to know as Jane Aminori, shook hands with my father, who was the leader in the region the earthlings crashed into. I’d stood right beside him, only 13 glentons old, 9 years in earth terms. The reporter, standing behind Dr. Aminori, cooed at me and spoke in words I didn’t understand. Immediate translators weren’t common technology on our planet then, nor did I know much of the language she spoke. She then butted into my father and Dr. Aminori’s conversation to ask him questions. The rest of the day felt like a blur, I couldn’t understand most of what was said, so I’d tuned it out. Dr. Aminori had dinner with us that night, though, along with several other leaders of our planet.
She, thankfully, spoke our language fluently. She mostly spoke with the leaders, and me and my young kin were pushed away to a smaller table nearby to allow them to speak on more serious matters. We tried our best to listen in, but after hearing it was boring, scientific things, we turned away and talked among ourselves. Later that night, Dr. Aminori spoke with me directly. I remember it vividly.
She’d walked over and bent down to be closer to my eye level, “Hello,” her accent was funny. I don’t think our words were meant to fit on her tongue. “My name is Jane. You’re Jaktekine’s daughter, aren’t you? It’s very nice to meet you.”
I gently nodded my head, not meeting her eye, “It’s nice to meet you too.”
Her lips crooked up, and she bared her teeth. It was a gesture of happiness among humans, but in my young age I’d found it frightening.
“I’m going to be staying with you and your family for a while. There’s a lot about your planet that’s very interesting.”
Again, I nodded, staring at my pointed out leg. Humans’ legs seemed much straighter than ours, and they had kneecaps. I found the differences in our legs much more interesting than the science of a world I grew up in.
She must have noticed my lack of enthusiasm, because she straightened her back to be at her normal standing height. Her teeth were no longer bared, but her lips were still pulled up in a way that made her cheeks rise and eyes squint.
“I have a child, who, I believe, is about your age. If I get permission from my home world, she’ll be allowed to come live here too. Have you ever met a human kid before?”
I shook my head ‘no’, and her lips seemed to stretch farther, “Well, hopefully soon you’ll be able to!”
She pressed her hand to my head for a moment, a comforting gesture, before turning to leave with a small wave. I waved back, and she started off down our hallway. I stared after her, still thinking about the differences in our legs, and in our faces, and spines, and arms. She had less arms than me, and had no tail, her mouth was one straight line with rounded, differently colored skin on the top and bottom, she had long hair that covered the top of her head, but everywhere else was quite smooth, her back was more vertical and straight, her nostrils were underneath a protruding chunk of flesh in the center of her face, and her eyes were smaller than mine. We were learning about the anatomy of different species in my school at the time, and I knew I wanted to do my end-of-period project on humans, they were so interesting.
To me, everything seemed fine with the earthlings, but I would soon find that despite the leaders’ mutual agreement to let them visit, many of my people were very anxious and unhappy with this decision. They were frightened of the earthlings. We were a planet that usually kept out of other planetary affairs, so to directly interact with one was considered risky.
In the next planet cycle, when I sat in my class with one of my friends, he told me that his parents thought the humans dangerous. I assured him that earthlings wished no harm toward us or our planet, we were on peaceful terms with them! He still seemed wary though, and I don’t think I could really blame him. One day, I would learn that there was much more backlash on earth than on our planet about the visitation. Humans, oddly enough, were more hostile to their own than they were to other species. They fought with one another over if this was good, was safe, and those who believed so hated those who believed other wise. Those who believed it wasn’t good or safe hated those who believed it was. When I learned about this, I was told that that was how humans always were. This or that, who and why, why and how, humans were angry and determined and stubborn, for better or for worse.
It seemed to be a “for better” case with our meetings, thankfully. Eventually, majority of humans accepted the fact that we were real and we were peaceful.
I’ve met many human children since the day earthlings first touched down onto our planet, including the daughter of Jane Aminori. I’ve helped raised earthling children, teach them, care for them. And in turn, humans have raised and cared for beings from our planet. We can’t mate with humans, not in any way other than for pleasure, but many humans have fallen in love with and married beings from our species.
I outlived Jane and her daughter. It’s possible I will outlive her daughter’s daughter, my daughter. Earthlings don’t live as long as most beings on our planet, humans certainly don’t live as long as my species. This saddens me, because they give such meaningful relationships. They are joyful and saddening and dramatic and loud. They are new. They are exciting.
I hope watching our integration of cultures and societies will allow more planets to open up to earthlings, and for earthlings to meet other planets. Perhaps I’m just biased, though. These silly, four-limbed, small eyed, tailless creatures have made quite the impression on me. One day, I want to travel to Earth and experience all of these odd cultures for myself- they have so many of them on one small planet.
There are many different views on afterlife, both on our planet and Earth’s, I hope Jane Aminori and her daughter are together in whichever one they believed in. I hope to join them some day. It would be nice to see Jane’s specific baring of teeth again.
Each earthling has a slightly different one, I’ve noticed. They are all so beautiful.

Chapter 5: Do You Trust Me?
Masterlist HERE
Pairing: Din Djarin x Fem!Reader
Words: 4.4K
Warnings: Violence, mild sexual harassment.
Description: If you want to get this ship fixed, you and the Mandalorian are going to have to make a deal that could put your safety in jeopardy - do you trust him?
The clouds had mostly cleared by the morning, and I found myself apologizing countless times for setting back our journey. Graciously, he reassured me that it was fine, but the pang of guilt ate away at my chest for the rest of the day. So, I decided that I would do the best damn repair job he had ever seen. I would work my ass off making sure his ship was perfect at as little extra cost to him as possible – this would be the only way I could make it right. Additionally, I tried my absolute best not to alert him towards how much pain I was in. It actually seemed to be working, as he seemed to have no cognizance of the pain I was in. I supposed for someone who deals with violence for a living, he had probably suffered a million injuries far worse than mine, and so I caulked up his indifference to this as opposed to my brilliant acting skills; I could barely hold back my moans and groans as we climbed up and over that mountain. Finally, the trees become sparser, and soon we left the forest behind us. We trekked through fields, most of which seemed to be untouched, but distantly I could see smoke rising in small puffs. We eventually came across a gravel road that seemed to separate the wild from the colonized; on the other side were well-kept fields of strange fruit trees and neatly plowed dirt. We stopped for a moment as we reached the road, the Mandalorian looking down at the small navigation device in the forearm of his suit while I took a moment to catch my breath. I’d definitely seen better days. It was fortunate I hadn’t had too much of a chance to look at my appearance, because I’m sure I wouldn’t have liked what I saw. Much of my clothing, particularly around my injured leg, was ripped or stained, and I was almost certain I still had grease on my face from my hasty repair work a couple of days ago. The small stream that banked the side of the road and the tended fields beckoned to me, and so while the Mandalorian busied himself, I went over and kneeled down at its edge to scoop up some water and splash my face down. It was freezing and fresh, reminding me again of the beauty of this planet. I took a moment to feel the mild sun on my back and the cool water drip down my chin, before standing up and turning back to the Mandalorian. “Before we go,” he said, when I reached him, “I want you to carry this.” Out of his utility belt he pulled a rather sharp dagger. It was nothing flashy, except for the way it shone in the afternoon sun, but it pricked something in my heart. “I – I wouldn’t know how to use it,” I admitted timidly. “Are you sure?” He held it out to me in the flat of his palm. “It would bring me some comfort,” he admitted, and so I took it. “Here,” he said, reaching down to my belt. My heart skipped a beat as he attached a sheath for me to keep it in. “Hide it. It will be the most useful if no one knows you have it.” I nodded, carefully sliding the dagger in.
We walked in relative silence, as we had for most of the day. But, unlike it was when we first met, it was a far more comfortable silence. A mutual understanding, of sorts, that we both had things we wished to mull over in our thoughts. I could only guess what he was thinking – he was still a mystery to me. But I thought about my plans on Kistern; where I would go, what I would… in truth, there wasn’t much use. I tried, desperately, over the whole course of the day to consider my plans. But I knew so little about the planet I would soon call home it was futile to try and pretend I did. I hated the uncertainty of my life at the moment (and of the past year), but I distracted myself by admiring the view around me and focusing on what I could manage in the near future; fixing this ship and getting off this planet in one piece. The sun was getting low in the afternoon sky by the time the once empty land began to become sparsely populated. But none of this planet’s loveliness could’ve prepared me for meeting its inhabitants. They were very similar to those back home on Yakish Temeen, in that they were a motley population of various races and species, but all equally unsettling. Roadside stalls and derelict houses intermittently spotted the side of the road, and we soon gained some unintentional company as more roads and paths began to diverge onto ours. By comparison to Yak’ish Temeen this was, on reflection, a far more diverse crowd – strange, large furry creatures towered over us, shepherding small and equally hairy creatures transporting goods on their backs, a group of Gungans manned a small cart of strange smelling purple fruit and humans at all wore equally unsettling expressions. They stared at us as we walked, glowering from a distance and occasionally whispering to each other. The Mandalorian must have noticed this, as he slowed down very suddenly to close the distance between us. “Walk near me,” he said quietly, not turning his head. “And don’t make eye contact. We’re not looking for trouble.” I slid my eyes down to the ground, trying to ignore the sensation of being watched. I felt my heart race in my chest. Eventually, we seemed to enter the settlement, marked by a higher density of houses and people. It was mostly one long street, flanked by various stalls selling strangely roasted animals, buckets of grains and other odd goods. Despite the fact I could hear children laughing in the distance, and that the general chatter of the place seemed civil, I followed the Mandalorian’s advice and stuck close by him. Although this was a new place to both of us, he walked with a confidence and direction that made him look like a seasoned local. By comparison, I was almost certain I looked frail and timid, shuffling along and intently staring at the ground. In times like this I was once again grateful for my peripheral vision. The Mandalorian veered off our straight course over to a stall on the right side of the road, where a man was talking to an Artiodac, both sitting on chairs under the cover of a low-hanging tarp. Under it and behind them I noticed a long table covered in various mechanical parts – all of which, I must admit, didn’t seem to be in the best condition. The Mandalorian conversed with the duo, who exchanged glances between each other, the Mandalorian and me. I shuffled uncomfortably under the weight of their stares, so I busied myself by trailing my eyes over the parts in the stall, scanning for anything I might be able to use. From this distance I could make out few bits that could be relevant – whether or not they were in usable condition was another question entirely. My heart stopped beating for a second, jumping out of my chest in shock as I felt a hand grab my arm gently. But it was just the Mandalorian, who was now facing in the opposite direction of me and the vendors as if to better prevent them from hearing what he was saying to me. “We’ll have to get the parts from here,” he said in a low, hushed tone. The baritone depth of his voice sent chills down my back. “Fill your bag with them. But don’t take long – I don’t trust these guys. Or anyone here.” I threw a glance at them; the man was murmuring something to his Artiodac colleague, both staring at us with dirty looks. I nodded in silent agreement with the Mandalorian, my arm still tingling as his grasp lingered on it, firm but tender. He let me get to work, scavenging through the piles of spare parts. As I did, he alternated between examining the pieces I presented to him and watching both the vendors and the general public. I tried my best not to let this creeping feeling disturb me, but it was hard to focus when I was acutely aware of the attraction we were drawing. I filled up my rucksack with the pieces we needed – although some of them were far rattier than I would’ve preferred, I figured it was better to clean and adjust them back at the safety of the ship than make any sort of complaint about it here. After about 20 minutes, I felt that I had truly ransacked the selection for all it was worth. What I had managed to collect wasn’t ideal, but I could definitely make it work, at least enough that we could get off this planet and to Kistern safely. Once I had informed the Mandalorian of this, he escorted me over to the two vendors. The human male gave me a look up and down, making me shuffle slightly – there was something almost hungry in his expression. He looked only a few years older than me and certainly didn’t look to be the muscle of the duo, but between his rugged facial hair and beady blue eyes, he felt threatening enough. Perhaps the Mandalorian saw this too, because he stepped forward rather pointedly, almost sizing up the man as he stood up. “Hand over the goods, lovely,” he said with a slick tongue. “Let’s see what you’ve picked out.” Turns out I didn’t need to hand over anything, as the Artiodac snatched the bag out of my hand with a low growl. “Watch it,” breathed the Mandalorian threateningly at him. The Artiodac took no notice, rummaging through my rucksack and conversing with the man in a foreign language as he occasionally gestured to certain parts. They seemed to be negotiating with each other, with the man occasionally spatting something at the Artiodac, who grumbled something back rather animatedly in return. Eventually, they seemed to come to an agreement, as they both turned back to me in unison. “You’ve got a good load here,” said the man, shifting his eyes slowly from me to the Mandalorian. “We’ve agreed it’ll set you back four thousand credits.” He exchanged a smirk with his colleague. “You’re overcharging,” said the Mandalorian in a gruff tone, which I could read as ‘I don’t have four thousand credits.’ “I can give you three thousand, no more.” The man raised an eyebrow, clearly bemused, and turned to the Artiodac to swap a few remarks in another language before turning back to him. “My friend and I agree four thousand is more than fair for a purchase of this size. However,” his gaze slid back over to me. “We’d be willing to compromise if you have something to offer that can… sweeten the deal.” The Mandalorian stiffened, seemingly understanding the implication of this statement. “Like what?” “My friend here,” said the man, shifting his weight to face me slightly, “is curious about what a Grat’anarian is doing in these parts. You see, he knows Yak’ish Temeen well, been there on a few business trips haven’t you, Uulog?” Uulog made a slurping sound as a reply. I shivered. “What’s your point?” The Mandalorian almost growled these words. “Well, if I’m correct, this one has a great bounty on her head… what with her refugee status, she has free entry onto all sorts of planets… planets me and my friend here, as well as many others, would love to gain access to. So, I’ll tell you what, you –” “I’m not bartering with her life,” said the Mandalorian, stepping even closer and slipping a hand silently onto his blaster. Uulog the Artiodac seemed to notice, as he reached for his blaster in the exact same manner, snarling. The man feigned a sympathetic smile, although the corners of his mouth remained sinisterly twisted. “Of course, of course! Such a pretty thing, I can understand how you wouldn’t want to part with her…” He looked at me and licked his lips. “However, I’m really not sure what else you have to offer that we’ll be interested in. Well, apart from…” he gestured with the silent tilt of his head to the Mandalorian himself. For a moment I was confused as to what he meant, but clearly the Mandalorian wasn’t, and his next words cleared it up. “My armor is not for sale.” “Hmm… what a shame. Well, then, neither are these parts.” The man studied the Mandalorian as if he knew this wouldn’t be the end of it; he was waiting for a better offer. The Mandalorian seemed stuck for a moment, and I could almost hear the cogs and wheels turning in his head. “Give us a moment,” he said to the man, who dismissed us in gratuitously generous gesture. Once again, the Mandalorian slipped his hand around my arm and escorted me to the side, shooting one last look at the vendors before turning to me. I could feel his gaze under the helmet and could sense his uncertainty. He had a plan, and I wasn’t going to like it. “Do you trust me?” I was taken aback dramatically by this question. My eyes, which had been trained in apprehension on the two conversing men, swiveled back to the Mandalorian in mild shock. His voice was almost a whisper, but I could once again hear what he was really saying – almost everything he said had another meaning, as I’d come to learn. I suppose a man of few words had to make the most of them. So, when he said, “do you trust me,” all I heard was “are you ready?” And despite my fear, despite the sinking feeling in my stomach, despite the hairs rising on the back of my neck and every instinct in my body telling me to run, I knew my answer to both questions. “Yes.” “Then play along,” he said quietly. We spared a moment, a split second to look at each other. I felt him squeeze my arm lightly, a small gesture that did a surprising amount to quell the rapid beating of my heart. Then, he turned back and walked over to the vendors. “Well, have we come to an agreement?” The man clapped his hands together enthusiastically, switching his gaze between the two of us. “You can take her,” said the Mandalorian. I’ll admit, I didn’t really have to feign shock at this statement. I knew, with the context of what he had just told me, that he wasn’t being serious, but his tone when he said it – so unbothered and emotionless – it fooled me for the few seconds it took to regain my senses. “What?!” I said, and he grabbed my arm with a force I was yet to feel from him, yanking me as if I was a bounty of his. “Ahh… an interesting development… I’m curious, what made you decide this?” The man’s voice was laced with civil suspicion; he seemed to find it hard to believe the Mandalorian would give me up so quickly. “Well, as you said,” said the Mandalorian, “she’s a very valuable bounty. But I need to get off this planet, so you can have her if that’s your price.” His grip tightened around my arm, and I took this as a silent signal; ‘you’ll have to sell this narrative’. “You bastard!” I yelled, and rather convincingly too. “You – you promised you’d help me! Over there you said – I’ll kill you!” I thrashed against his grip, but before I knew it, he was behind me, one hand tying mine together quickly with handcuffs and the other covering my mouth with his gloved hand. I knew this wasn’t the time or the place, but I couldn’t help my heart flutter at the feeling of my back pressed against the cold beskar breastplate behind me. The man’s smirk turned into a full grin, clearly entertained by our performances. “I have to say, you have not disappointed your reputation, Mandalorian. Cold both inside and out…” “There’s one condition,” said the Mandalorian, his hand still over my mouth. “I need her to repair my ship. You come with me, she repairs it, and then I’ll be on my way.” Once again, the two vendors exchanged brief and heated words in their language, before the man turned back to us. “You have yourself a deal. And, since we reached it so… amicably, I’m prepared to lower the credit portion of your price to just two thousand. As a symbol of… goodwill.” He smiled, that same twist at the corners of his mouth. I felt the Mandalorian nod in agreement behind me, and the Artiodac handed him back the rucksack, which he took with his now spare hand. “Perfect! Now, where is this ship of yours?” The Mandalorian slid his hand slowly off my mouth, faking a threatening glower at me before gesturing at the tall mountain we had recently climbed, which now loomed distantly behind the two men. Both of them turned around in unison, and the man made a sound of familiar acknowledgment. “Ahh, yes! The mountain of Pelesus! An important monument in Utaran history. I assume you hiked your way here, yes? Well, we do not mind in the slightest to give you a ride there… it would be in the best interest of all parties involved, no?” “Lead the way,” said the Mandalorian in return.
We were led further down the road before deviating off it and into what I can only describe as a shanty town, which proved this outpost was far bigger than we had initially noticed. Handmade lean-tos and shacks were piled haphazardly around, only making small alleys as paths between them. It was a strange and drastic contrast – the one between the beautiful, lush and rugged landscape around us with the squalors we were being led through. I wondered how this place could be so poor if it were so abundant with natural resources, and I sensed that something more sinister was probably at play on this planet. The man switched between conversing with the Artiodac in a hushed, foreign tongue to occasionally making cheery remarks to the Mandalorian, as if he were a tour guide showing us around the glorious city of Theed. Eventually, we made it to what almost appeared to be a junkyard on the outskirts of the town, where we were led to a landspeeder. “Wait aboard,” said the man, whose name we had learned on our walk over to be Raggard. I thought I may have a moment alone to ask the Mandalorian something, but the Artiodac stayed with us as we climbed onto the large and rusty landspeeder, eyeing us pointedly the entire time. I watched discreetly as Raggard waved over a few people who had been sitting around nearby and spoke to them in the same foreign language he had spoken to his colleague in. By the way they looked over Raggard’s shoulder at me hungrily, I could only assume they believed they would be getting their fair share of my worth when we returned. Which we wouldn’t, of course. I looked over at the Mandalorian, who sat next to me. He seemed unreadable at this moment, still as a statue and paying attention to nothing in particular. I hoped he knew what he was doing, because I certainly didn’t. His words, ‘do you trust me’, echoed distantly in my ears.
Soon we were off, the four of us in the landspeeder. The journey was only a few hours, and by far shorter than our hike here, but felt agonizingly long as I sat with anticipation and fear in the pit of my stomach. Finally, we arrived at the bottom of the other side of the mountain, and I could almost see the ship as I looked up its slope. We hiked the rest of the way up, the Mandalorian guiding me with a gentle hold on my arm, as my hands were still cuffed. Eventually, we reached the ship, by which time it was almost sunset. “You’d best get working,” said Raggard, walking slowly around the ship to admire it. “It’s clear you’ve got a lot of work to do before it gets dark.” As I collected and sorted the parts, I noticed the Artiodac grumble something at Raggard, who hissed something back in what seemed to be a low, yet heated argument. I tried to ignore it, focusing on my repairs and working as quickly as possible; the sooner we could do this, the sooner we could leave. The Mandalorian helped with repairs but no matter where we went, either inside or out of the ship, one or both of the duo followed us. Because of this, I had not a moment alone with him to ask what his plan was, although I had a strong feeling it would involve violence. Finally, not long after dark, we completed the repairs. The Mandalorian escorted me out of the ship to meet outside with the two men. I began to get nervous. “Well,” said Raggard, approaching us as we were followed out by the Artiodac. “It has been a pleasure, really. But I suppose now is the time to part ways.” The Mandalorian said nothing but didn’t let go of his grip on my arm – if anything, he tightened it. “It is a shame,” said Raggard, poetically, “that you must part ways with such a precious bounty.” He walked up to me, too close for my liking, reading over my face with a gleam in his eyes. “But I’m sure you’ll take comfort in knowing she’ll be of great use to us.” With a dirty, spindly finger he traced a line down the side of my cheek. I shuddered and bit down hard on my tongue to hide my disgust. “However,” he said, “although she will prove a most valuable asset, I just can’t stop thinking about that beautiful beskar armor of yours, I mean, how did you get it?” The Mandalorian didn’t indulge him with a response, but Raggard took his silence as one. “I know, I know, secrets of the Mandalorians. It has been exciting, really, to do business with you. But,” he said, slowly, exchanging a glance with his partner, “it will be even more exciting to kill you.” In the course of the next three seconds, I barely had time to do anything but fall to the ground in shock. As Raggard said these last words, the Mandalorian drew his blaster and simultaneously threw me to the ground. He shot over Raggard’s shoulder, and it was only then, when I looked up, that I noticed the figures drawing in from the forest around us. The men from back at the junkyard began firing at the Mandalorian, and from my position cowering on the ground I watched as he, one by one, meticulously shot them down. He didn’t even seem to look at them, he just knew where they were. When the Artiodac pounced it him from behind, I screamed in shock, but the Mandalorian shook him off in forward-roll drop to the ground, shooting him with a blaster shot straight to the head. I didn’t see what happened in the next few seconds and only heard the Mandalorian grunting as he spared in hand-to-hand combat with a few more goonies who had seemed to close the distance towards him. I was yanked up off the ground, and felt a cold blaster dig into my lower back, freezing me in fear as another arm wrapped around my throat tightly. I could feel Raggard’s hot breath on my neck and smell the sweat on his arm. I scrambled desperately at it, trying to pull it away so I could breathe, but it was no use. “STOP!” Raggard’s voice was shrill in my ear. My vision unclouded at last, and I was able to see the Mandalorian, standing only a few feet away from us, bodies sprawled around him. He turned to us, still holding his blaster in one hand and what appeared to be a spear in the other. “Let’s not – let’s not let this get more out of hand than it already is,” said Raggard, panting violently. I could feel him shaking with adrenaline. “I wouldn’t want anything nasty to come of this pretty little thing, but if we get too ahead of ourselves, I may have no choice.” But as he spoke, something strange happened. I felt the world fall away, and the sound of Raggard’s voice, the clench is arm had around my throat, the blaster in my back… I lost all sense that they were there. I felt my arms release from Raggard’s, falling to my side. Even though he was wearing a helmet, I knew he was looking at me. I could feel it, like I always did, the warmth of his gaze that, for once, seemed to slow down my heart as opposed to speeding it up. Right now, I could only feel him. Him, and… At my side, I slipped my hand into the folds of my shirt. In one swift movement, I unsheathed the dagger and plunged it into the arm that was so tightly constricting my throat. Raggard let out a yelp of pain, letting me go as he stumbled back. “Onto the ship!” The Mandalorian yelled, and I wasted no time scrambling aboard. Outside, I heard blaster shots and scuffling, but I didn’t give myself time to reflect on it. I ascended the ladder into the cockpit and, without even sitting down, began to start up the ship. My hands were shaking violently, and I tried so hard to keep my focus on the buttons I was pressing and not my concerns for the Mandalorian. Before I initiated take off, I almost jumped back down into the hull and watched in astonishment as the Mandalorian strode up the ramp, sheathing his blaster and spear in the process. With no hesitation he went right past me and into the cockpit, and only seconds later I felt the whole ship shake underneath me as we rose up from the ground and away from it all.

DC AU. Not entirely ironed out, so it’s either gonna be in the DC universe itself, or just a DC styled universe. I’m leaning toward the latter.
What I’ve got so far:
The Wastakens are a magic wielding family that goes back for generations, using said magic to protect humanity from demonic influence. The head family has three children, Dei, Dream, and Drista.
Dei is the family prodigy, and he’s quickly made a name for himself in both the magic and the hero world.
Dream was a small time vigilante turned villain turned anti-hero. His villain arc was unwilling, seeing as he was under the possession of the Nightmare Mask, a magic artifact similar to Dr. Fate’s helmet, except instead of Dr.Fate, it traps a powerful demon to the physical plane, and those who wear the mask become it’s unwilling host.
Both Drista and Dream have a rather startling secret-they have demonic lineage. Their grandmother was involved with a demon prince, and the genes emerged in them. Dream’s traits remained latent until the mask triggered their appearance, and Drista’s were sealed away by her grandmother and father the day she was born.
Under the control of the Nightmare Mask, Dream amassed an army of demons and hell-bound monsters to bring down the Wastakens and their allies. At the final battle, the mask was ripped off, and the following magic explosion was bad enough that he was presumed dead, being nearby at the time.
However, he was actually rescued by Sapnap, a half demon who fled hell and was adopted young by fallen angel Bad. Sapnap, part of previously mentioned army just for the chaos, basically saw what happened, and somewhat sympathized with the newly realized half-demon, so he saved him and took him into hiding.
Now Dream is basically trying to figure out how to deal with his new heritage, and what it entails, with Sapnap’s help.
....It’s a work in progress.
Ranboo is an alien prince from a distant planet. He’s half Enderian, and half Ghasty.
Enderians are a nomadic alien species with no true home planet, instead preferring to travel constantly in groups called Hauntings, rarely settling-the vast emptiness of space is their home. However, they do have many ally planets, including Netherret, a hellish landscape who’s residents are hardy, and hot blooded.
A few eras ago, the leader of Ghasther-the kingdom of Ghasties upon Netherret- married the leader of an Enderian Hauntings, thus renewing their alliance for centuries to come.
The family has four children. Ranbob, and Ran, the children of the Enderian leader, and Boo, and sole child of the Ghasther leader. Finally, the youngest, Ranboo, who was born to them both, and named by his older siblings, who thought it’d be cool to combine their names.
Ranbob and Ranboo are the closest of them, being the two in the family to have heritage that, at times, can work against them.
Ranboo’s of both Enderian and Ghasty, meaning his body occasionally has troubles figuring out what temperature he’s suppose to stick at, causing it to often drop and flare while his body struggles to find a compromise it can stick to.
Ranbob, on the other hand, is half Enderian and half Merling-which is a problem all on it’s own, because one is a species with a huge aversion to water, considering it literally acts as acid to them, and the other is a water-dwelling species. So, yeah.
Anyway, at some point, Ranboo ends up on earth, and befriends Tubbo, which leads to him eventually meeting the SBI, and being adopted into the fold.
Ranbob goes searching for his little brother, and ends up there sometime later, except he’s found by Dream’s group, and taken in by them.
Both aliens have their fair share of confusion with their new friends, because all things considered, both Merlings and Ghasties are incredibly expressive species, sharing their feelings with one another easily, and being aided as needed, and Earth’s residents...don’t really seem to do that. Weird.

Kobayashi’s Maid Dragon S2 Episode 5 Notes
Better late than never! Hopefully I’ll catch up with these before next week’s episode hits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
私は、種族全体の目的よりも自分がやりたいことをやっているエルマに、興味がありました。
当時の私、そんな感じでしたし。
What Tohru is saying in these shots is a little different in the Japanese:
“I had an interest in Elma, who was doing what she wanted to do instead of advancing the goals of the species [her faction]. Since that’s how I was at the time, too.”
That is, for the first sentence, Tohru is saying Elma wasn’t interested in the broader dragon goals, not Tohru herself.
Then in the second sentence, instead of a wishy washy “I think that’s how it was?” Tohru says that she was like that too, hence her interest.
So it goes from like:
“I was interested more in Elma than in faction goals, because she was acting freely. I think, anyway.”
to more of a:
“I was interested in Elma because she was acting freely, not bound by faction goals. That’s what I was like too, after all.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not sure if it really counts as a translation note, but since I had some questions about it, here’s a few words on the Tohru/Elma disagreement scene.
Tohru thought Elma was like herself: acting not according to what dragon (or human) society asked of them, but according to their own personal set of values. Elma, by allowing herself to be placed in the position of “god” by the humans, had changed that; she locked herself into permanently being a (large, important) cog in the human society. From Tohru’s perspective, she’d lost the one person she felt kindred with, her fellow “free actor.” She doesn’t particularly care what happens to the humans, hence the 私が言いたいことはそういう話ではない (“That’s not what I’m trying to talk about”) when Elma says she’ll just stop the wars from happening: that’s all well and good, but it doesn’t solve Tohru’s issue.
Hence Kobayashi’s response: both grand (involved the fate of nations), and petty (Elma got “trapped” by food, and Tohru’s initiation of the fight was for personal reasons).

喧嘩するほど仲がいい kenka suru hodo, naka ga ii
This is one of those sayings that is often a giant pain in the butt to translate, because it’s not an odd concept in English, but for whatever reason* there is no common pithy saying for it like there is in Japanese, so it’ll almost come off less smoothly.
The idea is that, in order to “have a fight” with someone, you have to already have an established relationship that’s at a certain level of closeness.
Two strangers? Why would you even have a reason to fight, who cares. Two acquaintances? Why deal with it, just smile and nod and go on with your day. Two close friends though? You probably care enough to want to convince them of whatever it is, and/or you don’t want to have to hide your real thoughts/feelings around them like you might around, say, just random coworkers or something—meaning more chances for friction.
*My theory on this is that it comes from the same place as the “wow Japanese people are so polite” stereotype and stuff like honne/tatemae as discussed in a previous episode’s notes: in a situation where two strangers/acquaintances might get into a shouting match in the US, in Japan there’s a comparatively higher chance they just tatemae it up to prevent direct conflict and end the situation early—hence less likely to “have a fight” per se. As always this stuff is just on a continuum though.

What do you call these “clouds” left by planes as they fly? In Japanese, they’re called 飛行機雲 hikoukigumo, lit. “airplane clouds.” And they’re not a season word!
Officially, anyway.
However, they are heavily associated with summer, to the point where you if you google around to find out if they are a haiku season word, there are a whole bunch of sites to tell you no, they’re not, stop asking. That doesn’t mean they’re not a great way to tell the audience it’s summer anyway, though!
If you’re curious as to why the summer association: how long vapor trails like this remain visible depends heavily on how humid the air is. More humidity, longer trails. And Japan has very humid summers (and very dry winters!).
If you’ve heard the song Tori no Uta, the OP to Air (also animated by Kyoani), hikoukigumo is the very second word in the lyrics—no coincidence given the heavy summer theming! If you haven’t heard it, I suggest giving it a try.

“Candy shop” here is 駄菓子屋 dagashi-ya, which is a kind of store that specializes in very cheap varieties of “candy” (maybe more accurately snack foods?): dagashi. If you’re seen/read any of the series Dagashi Kashi, you’re familiar with this variety of snack.
Dagashi is so called because, back in the Edo period, quality white sugar was super expensive and not something commoners could typically eat. Cheaper brown sugar was, though, so you ended up with different terms for stuff made from each: the expensive 上菓子 jougashi and the cheap 駄菓子 dagashi.
Later, in the Showa period after WW2 when the average person was able to afford a bit more, the term stuck around but more generalized, referring to a wide variety of cheap snacks. These snacks are not necessarily always sugary, and they often have some sort of gimmick so it wasn’t “just” a piece of candy—toys attached, or games/puzzles, or requiring some interesting way to eat/drink them. If you grew up with Dunkaroos: that kinda thing.
Similar to “penny candy,” dagashi was/is cheap enough for children to afford several different varieties of with just a bit of change from their parents, and small stores specializing in them—dagashi-ya—sprung up all over the country, quickly becoming a popular spot for kids… and, not too long after, a symbol of childhood nostalgia.
They’ve been on a big downtrend in the last few decades however. The spread of convenience stores as a competitor for snack buying is often cited as one reason, while a greater variety of ways for kids to spend their playtime now (video games etc.) is another.

You’re probably aware, but of the many reasons to bow in Japan, to show humility when making a request is a big one.
Of note here is that Tohru doesn’t push Ilulu’s head down, which other characters in other shows might have done here, but just lightly reminds her: yeah okay you’re a dragon talking to a human, but you’re the one asking—act like it. She does, and her sincerity is rewarded.
Tumblr media
The word here is ぱねぇ panee, which is a heavily abbreviated form of 半端(では/じゃ)ない hanpa nai, ~lit. “not halfway/half-done/half-assed.”
hanpa ja nai→hanpa nai→hanpa nee→panee
It’s used probably how you’d expect: describing something intense af.
(I’m mostly just bringing it up because I love super-shortened slang like this!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The phrase for “like” here is 気に入った ki ni itta, which is basically to have an interest in something/someone, to take a liking to, to say something is a favorite, etc. When said of another person, there’s typically an air of the speaker considering themselves in a higher position. It generally isn’t “like” in a romantic sense.
Take’s “hey that’s my line,” comes from the fact he’s (in his mind) in the position of power and was judging her on whether he’d try to kick her out of the job. You can tell he was thinking of it as “I like the cut of your jib. I guess you can stay.” kind of thing.
Normally a new employee would not say this about their new boss/job, even if they did like it, though a boss/senpai could of a new employee, hence the “what?”
Tumblr media
Notably, Ilulu used “like” earlier in the episode to refer to Tohru as well. In that case it was 好き suki, which is a more literal “like,” with the various implications that may or may not have. Personally, it strikes me as a little odd to translate them both as “like” in the same episode.
And that’s it for episode five! I’m
