Lmao now I have to imagine cold, clinical asshole Cobb finding street kid Jason and going “Yes, he’s got potential. He may be a street rat but he’s tenacious. And with that color scheme he’s perfect for triggering Batman’s protective instincts and blackmailing him”.

Also Cobb, three months later, pinning yet another essay to the fridge and contemplating how to get rid of Madison from PTA who had the audacity to imply that his kid shouldn’t attend their kind of school: “… wait a minute.”

So these are my thoughts on a Spy x Family/Batman fanfic AU based on @reineydraws very cute and fun art that I'll write someday in the vague future. My Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun AU takes precedent over this, but I wanted to get this out because it's been eating my brain.

I will admit that I have read almost no Batman comics or watched TV shows but I started reading fanfic for it and now the Batfam runs through my brain 24/7. I am currently reading the Young Justice comics, though, and will be reading more when I'm done with that.

So here's how I'm mashing the two canons together: this is a no superheroes AU where no one has any powers (except Anya and other potential government experiments that haven't come up) and the Spy x Family universe is farther in the future so there's computers and cell phones (the reason why is shown later). Also, Eden Academy is slightly more accepting of strange familial situations (at least for Bruce Wayne) and less obsessed with image because I can't imagine canon Eden Academy accepting a disabled Babs. That's the main setting, but the characters are far more important to me.

Bruce Wayne was orphaned in the war but since this setting actually has therapists he's a lot more well-adjusted and does not go out dressed as a bat to beat up criminals, which is good because Ostania is a police state and they would not tolerate that. The country does, however, have an organization like WISE who also doesn't want another war, and Bruce is involved with that, using his Brucie persona to get information on warmongers in the government. That organization (which doesn't have a name yet) works tentatively with WISE but they don't exactly trust one another. Unfortunately, Donovan Desmond fucking hates Brucie Wayne and so doesn't interact with him at the Imperial Scholars gatherings, leading to Operation Strix still needing to be done. He's beloved by the city of Berlint, just like the Wayne's are in Gotham, which is a big reason why Dick and Jason are able to be accepted into Eden Academy late and Damian without a mom. Twilight is aware that there's a person in the upper echelons of Ostania but doesn't know who it is and is trying to figure it out. Bruce uses his money to make social programs to uplift his fellow citizens in poverty because if you're rich that's what you should do or I'll fucking hate you.

Dick Grayson is still an orphaned circus acrobat (although here his parents deaths are a legitimate tragic accident) that Bruce adopts who is able to get into Eden late due to his intelligence, athleticism, and lots and lots of bribes. Instead of the Court of Owls, he's connected to the Garden here and the Shopkeeper is his relative instead of William Cobb. Bruce is very adamant that Dick is not involved with that, so while Dick knows about the Garden and it's members, he's more involved with the organization Bruce is in. He is legitimately friends with Demetrius Desmond, but his relationship to his father is like Damian's (who is an unreliable narrator when it comes to his family) so he has no information for Dick to get for the organization. He's also close friends with Babs.

Barbara is the daughter of the police commissioner who isn't involved in the SS and is still disabled because she was kind of a gamechanger in comics with her disability so I want to keep that. I haven't decided whether she was born with it or if it was an injury but she still has a wheelchair. Babs is also still Oracle (which is why I need the technology to be updated) and is a hacker similar to maia arson crimew IRL (god bless it) who leaks documents of crimes the Ostanian government has done, and has to be very careful to never reveal her identity because she would immediately be detained, tortured, and killed. Thankfully, very few people would suspect that Oracle is a disabled teenage girl at Eden Academy. No one except Tim, that is.

Jason meets Bruce after trying to jack his car wheels and Bruce takes one look at this child and thinks "Mine" and so Jason is adopted. He is also accepted at Eden Academy late because of his stellar academics and because Bruce had already set a precedent. He's a good athlete, but he's not a prodigious gymnast like Dick so that's not part of why he gets in. Unlike Bruce and Dick, he's not involved in the organization. Instead he's involved in the groups of civilians who are against the police state. In the manga, the only resistance groups are people who are willing to put innocent people in danger, which sucks a lot. The organization Jason's involved in would absolutely kill some government officials but wouldn't get civilians harmed. Duke is also involved in this, but he's a minor character and I'm already juggling so many characters but imagine Duke and Jason working together in a gang setting. DC, why have you not done this already?

Cass (OP didn't include Cass in the original post but I love Cass so she's being included) was still trained to be an assassin from birth with David Cain being part of the Garden, but the Shopkeeper actually has some morals and is horrified when he sees what's been done to Cass, maybe when she's around 9 years old and Cain shows her off to the Shopkeeper, expect him to be impressed. Manipulating children into being assassins is one thing, but training a child to be a weapon and literally nothing else is another, so Cain is disposed of (maybe by Yor) and the Shopkeeper sends Cass to be taken care of by Bruce because he knows that he's a good dad because he takes care of Dick. Unfortunately because she's spent her entire life up to this point not being able to speak or read, she's not able to catch up in school enough to be accepted into Eden Academy, but she is able to go to a school that focuses on dance and she lives her dreams of being a ballerina and meets Steph there, maybe doing another type of dance because I can't imagine Steph as a ballerina. She's not involved in politics the way her brothers and father are, but that's okay because she deserves to just be happy.

Tim is the neighbor of Bruce Wayne who, when Bruce realizes is horribly neglected, unofficially adopts him and eventually sues the Drakes for child abuse and officially adopts him. He was already in Eden Academy so that's not a problem. Tim doesn't have a Batman to obsess over in this universe, but he does have an Oracle to obsess over. He somehow finds out Oracle's identity (I'll figure out how later) and begs to be her apprentice, and she eventually takes him on because Tim is stubborn AF and also a talented hacker in his own right. He's best friends with Conner, the son of reporters Clark and Lois Kent (who report critcal things that the government is doing with pseudonyms), because I'm weak for their relationship. I want to add the rest of the Core Four but I don't know how so we'll see how that goes. He suspects that Bruce and Dick are part of the secret organization and that Jason is part of the civilian resistance to the police state but doesn't want to be involved with that because he's already involved with resistance work and the less he knows the better in case he's found out by the government.

Damian is the actual son of Bruce and Talia, who met on a business trip Bruce or Talia took and they had a fling which resulted in Damian. Ra's doesn't have access to a Lazarus Pit here because those don't exist so he's just a normal cult leader who's been dead before Talia and Bruce meet. Talia has turned the cult's assets into a business venture so Damian has an actually fairly normal, if spoiled and also full of martial arts training because that's still important to Talia, upbringing. Bruce and Talia share custody and Damian stays with his father for the school year and with his mother during breaks. Bruce and Talia may still be in love. I don't know, I'll figure it out. Anyway, Damian has a huge rivalry with the other Damian because they're both sons of influential people with a chip on their shoulder, but they're also foils because Damian W actually has a loving family and Damian D doesn't. Damian W befriends Anya and Becky specifically because he wants to annoy Damian D but eventually becomes legitimately fond of them (and Damian D and his friends) but he will never admit it. He's just as much of a tsundere as the other Damian, just in a platonic way. Damian also faces racism due to his brown skin (BECAUSE HE'S DARK OKAY DC LET HIM BE A POC).

The actual story will have some focus on the little shenanigans of the kids at Eden like in SxF (including the older kids), but instead of focusing on Twilight and Yor, the other part will focus on the Wayne's and their allies political maneuverings, but also some slice-of-life with Cass because she deserves it. We may have some small flashes to the Forger family, but they're not the focus. There will also be Batfam fluff because I'm a sucker for that.

His story is told in Justice League vol 2  # 23.4 and # 25, but you never see him as Talon there. This Talon picture is from Nightwing Vol 4 # 17, where Dick sees different versions of himself. I guess this is supposed to be Talon from Earth-3. 

Post-Crisis and before Court of Owls was invented, there was another Talon of Earth-3. He worked with Owlman for a time and later got engaged to Duela Dent, and the two of them came to the pre-Flashpoint main universe and joined the Teen Titans during the “year after” (2006). But his identity was never revealed, and his predecessor had been killed, so he might very well not have been the Dick Grayson of that world. (However, the Talon suit in Nightwing Vol 4 # 17 has copied that look.)

Also Talon, those few panels when great grandfather William Cobb managed to brain-wash the main continuity Dick with the help of a magic (?) crystal. Nightwing Vol 4 # 66, 67. 2020)

So I was talking to some friends of mine about how distant Bruce Wayne is to all of his children besides Dick.

We had some theories-

One of them was that after Jason died Bruce refused to connect on the same level with his children that he had before.

Another was that Dick was the type to seek affection and connection. Jason was an angry street kid who would have been weirded out by too much affection. Tim was so neglected for awhile he probably thought Bruce was affectionate (until he met Bart who’s on a crusade to hug everyone). Cass would be uneasy with it and accept it only on rare occasions. And Damian would have been offended by such displays of weakness (kidding he loves them but doesn’t trust a lot of people to be that psychically close to him).

So then we started talking about how close Dick and Bruce were compared to Jason, Tim, Cass, Damian. And we thought of something that just blew our minds.

When Dick was a teenager he began to feel smothered by Bruce. He felt his mentor was over protective and cautious. He didn’t want Bruce to treat him like a child (cause he was of the wise age of sixteen) and even ran away a few times as far as we know.

When Dick was eighteen and went to college Bruce immediately got empty cave syndrome and moved into the city.

So we think as he got Jason and then the rest of the kids Bruce didn’t want to drive them away the way he did Dick. So Bruce being Bruce jumped to the exact opposite strategy in raising them. Because why have some semblance of balance when you can go balls to the walls and jump off a roof.

So Bruce who smothered Dick and chased him out of the nest took a hands off approach to the other kids. He let them run about and do as they pleased. He wasn’t as involved in their lives. Does he care? Of course but he took an interest in Dick. He watched everything his son did. He knew Dick’s friends personally. He worked with the parents/mentors of Dick’s friends. So in Bruce’s mind if he does nothing that he did with Dick he won’t drive the others away.

Which isn’t always a bad thing. One point to note is the age of the comics but when Bruce was raising Dick slapping him around was not out of the question. And that translates into the modern comics. Bruce has beat Jason up true but he did think Jason had murdered someone so it was more Batman vs Red Hood than Bruce backhanding Dick for talking back. Which happens way more than one might think.

So Bruce doesn’t ever as far as I’ve seen hit his children like he hits Dick. The ones that come to mind is that popular one way back in the day of Bruce slapping Dick. He hit Dick a lot back then. Like not just spankings but punching in the face which I don’t think was corporal punishment even back then. But let’s move past that for the sake of those being decades ago.

Most modern would be during the Court of Owls with William Cobb, Bruce and Dick are arguing and Bruce backhands Dick hard enough to knock out a tooth. A tooth which of course contains a metal talon logo. (that was somehow never noticed on the countless x-rays that boy has gotten) Another is of course Nightwing #30 after Dick is killed by Lex Luthor and brought back Bruce wants him to stay dead. They trash the cave and beat the shit out of each other because Bruce wants to teach Dick a lesson.

(He’s hit Tim before once to get him to shut up now that I think about it but I can’t recall him beating in his other kids the way he does Dick.)

Now I’ve gone off on a rant about Bruce being a bad father. I digress.

Bruce being harsher on Dick goes back to the smothering he doesn’t treat Dick like an adult, expects him to be the best of the best, and still seems to spy on Dick.

My thoughts for this came from Batman 54. Selina Kyle left Bruce at the altar because while I’m not as down on Tom King as some people he really doesn’t get Catwoman. But anyways afterwords Bruce is a mess and Dick is trying to help him out of his funk.

Selina’s reasoning for leaving Bruce was that he had to be a miserable loner to be a good Batman. Batman 54 showed that Bruce has never been alone and he’s not miserable. He has Dick and to quote the man himself “I’m committed to you”

Dick Grayson was the light to the Dark Knight. When Bruce lost him Gotham lost its light. Bruce lost his light. And we see like in the Forever Evil arc that Bruce was straight up going to choke Lex out after he killed Dick.

Wow long rambling post to get to the point that while Dick is probably the closest to Bruce it’s probably the separation with Dick that prevented Bruce from growing closer to his other kids.

This is all just speculation obviously because in reality a lot of bad writers and weird retcons contribute to Bruce’s character. Par example Dick Grayson going to college so they could make Bruce dark and brooding again cause the writer knew they couldn’t do that with Dick in the picture.

I’d love to know if anyone else has any other thoughts on this. I love discussing this stuff.

You’ve Got So Much Heart: Chapter 7

Thursday was a quiet day. The halls in Wayne manor held a fragile calm that had been unseen by the scratched hardwood since before Damian’s arrival many years ago. The only commotion came from the den as Bruce and Dick raced to see who could discover the Scooby Doo culprit first. Dick won every time, even if only because Bruce let him. Dick’s prize was sneaking desert in before dinner--- a risky move in a house where Alfred seemed to lurk behind every corner. They made ice cream sundaes with chocolate sauce, bananas, and rainbow sprinkles. If Alfred had found them out from the depleted ice cream supply, he didn’t say anything. Just this once.

Bruce posited the idea of Cass coming over the next day and possibly bringing along Barbara. Dick beamed at the idea and Bruce almost had to resort to bribing to get the boy asleep. Barbara was Dick’s only friend both his age and outside of the family. Out of everyone in the family, Dick had always been the people person, and Bruce knew that being stuck inside with only three other people had been starting to get to the boy. He almost broke Bruce’s ribs when he told Dick that he was ready for a friend. Did the fact that she also had a cape make Bruce feel more secure about introducing Dick to a social life, without a doubt. He also knew how suffocating the family could be--- himself especially. Having a fresh face that Dick could relax around had been a necessity.

They arrived at noon, right on schedule. Dick hated it when people arrived earlier than expected, got anxious when they were late.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Cain, Ms. Gordon.” Alfred couldn’t contain his glee at seeing Cass and Barbara. “Lunch will be ready within the hour. Master Wayne is waiting for you in the study, Ms. Cain. He looks forward to hearing about your latest trip abroad.”

Cass nodded her thanks and left to find her father.

“Do you know where Dick is, Alfie?” Barbara asked looking around the large lobby. He usually met her when she arrived, usually couldn’t wait to see her.

Alfred smiled down at young Barbara, only a few years older than Dick and with all the intelligence that Jim Gordon bragged about every time he passed by. “I believe Master Dick is in the room with us, Ms. Gordon, or maybe above us.” They both looked up to the beams that cross the high ceiling.

Alfred gave a merry laugh. “Good luck on this round, Ms. Gordon. Do try not to break anything from the fifteen century or earlier this time.”

“No fair,” Barbara said, arms crossed with a wicked grin on her face. “Those are all the most breakable antiques.”

“How will you ever survive,” Alfred said as he made his way back to the kitchen to finish their meal. He seldom got the opportunity to prepare a meal for so many people these days, the food had to be perfect.

Barbara surveyed the room for any sign of her friend, but, of course, Dick left no clues.

“You heard Alfred, Boy Wonder, no breaking the really old stuff. Now, we know that is going to happen if I have to start chasing after you.”

A soft footfall announced Dick as he dropped behind her. First thing Barbara noticed when she turned around was his comfy clothing--- a baggy sweatshirt over a leotard. He must have been working out, Barbara thought. Then she noticed that Dick smiled at her, but not a happy Dick Grayson smile. Just as Dick had many names--- Richard, Dick, Robin, Talon, the Gray Son--- he had many smiles that he put on like a show. Right now, Dick’s smile seemed stretched, taut with an inner turmoil.

“I knew where you were.” She joked, trying to see where his level of humor fell today.

“No, you didn’t” A subdued glint in his eyes, usually he enjoyed sneaking up on people. He made a game out of it, and he always loved surprising people. Right now, he didn’t look like he had won another game. Dick looked like he had already lost but didn’t want anyone to know.

“Try and prove that I didn’t.” Barbara gave him an easy smile to help him unwind. She could read Dick Grayson like computer code. His mind was a puzzle, and Barbara loved puzzles. “I’ve missed you. How have you been?”

Dick looked torn; he glanced down the empty halls for any prying family members. “Not good.”

“What happened?” Barbara asked.

Dick looked at her. His hands tapped out nervous energy in the only way his training knew how. “Let’s go upstairs.”

“Come in,” Bruce called when a firm, yet polite, know resonated through the study. That was Cass’s knock. When Dick did actually knock it was hesitant and soft, afraid to ask. Jason was firm, confident, and a little too loud. Damian didn’t knock.

Cass entered with a smile and a wave, and Bruce’s heart soared to see his daughter again.

“Cass, it’s been too long.” Bruce used his most Brucie voice and crossed the room to give his daughter a hug. “How was Bruges?”

“Educational.” Was her response. She pulled a vinyl a bag she carried on her shoulder and handed it to her father. “For you.”

“Brahms,” Bruce remarked. “A good choice. Why don’t we give this a listen?” Bruce went over to the turntable and set up the record. Once the music began playing, Bruce’s façade faded with the lost silence. “What did you find out?”

Cass handed him a USB drive which he plugged into the computer. There were notes and documents, including blurred pictures of Talons dating back decades. Even more, evidence that the Court had influence spreading further than the borders of Gotham could contain.

“Your writing keeps getting better.” He noted as he read the notes that she had written to connect pieces of evidence. “

“I had a great teacher.” She smiled at him before pointing at a single file marked HC. “You need to see this.”

Bruce clicked the file open and was met with an old photograph taken in Bruges almost a century ago. In the photo, there was a man in his twenties shaking hands with a well-dressed older man with a boy standing at his side. A striped circus tent was in the background. The twenty-year-old looked familiar, so Bruce pulled open a file that contained a sketch of William Cobb that Damian had made with Dick’s help. There was an irrefutable resemblance.

“You found him.” A few years of searching and they finally found evidence that William Cobb existed before the Court. His indoctrination couldn’t have been long after the photo had been taken. However, Bruce’s joy at their first lead was sucked away when he remembered the backdrop of the photo.

“He’s at the circus.” Bruce didn’t believe in coincidence, but he wished that he did.

Cass nodded, grief in her heart. She took the mouse and zoomed in on the young boy standing next to the ringmaster. “He is Mr. Haly.”

Bruce had to pace around his study to avoid throwing the computer against the wall. When Dick had first moved in, all he could talk about was the circus and Mr. Haly. Dick saw that man as a grandfather like he saw Alfred. Dick loved that circus, and if they were working with the Court this whole time, well, Bruce didn’t know what that would do to Dick. Even now, the circus was his life.

“You know what this means,” Cass asked, but it wasn’t really a question.

“It means that the Court didn’t pick him at random. They were grooming him, probably from birth.” Bruce had planned to take Dick to the circus when it came back to town later that week. Would they take him back to the Court if they saw him? “What I want to know is why they chose Dick.”

Cass nodded, she had her next mission.

Bruce ejected the USB after making an encrypted copy for his own records. “I assume that I don’t need to tell you that not a word of this leaves the room until we have indisputable proof that Haly’s Circus was working for the Court.”

Cass agreed. She knew Dick, saw herself in him. This news would only bring him pain, and even if there were no collusion he would never feel safe around the circus again. She turned away to leave but stopped when her father spoke again.

“Can I expect you at the Gala next week. I know Dick would love you there.” He could never just ask someone to stay.

She knew this, and she nodded before she left him standing alone with the music.

“Have you talked to Bruce about this?”

Did shook his head. “Bruce doesn’t like talking about Tim.”

Barbara didn’t blame Bruce for that one, at least not completely. She had been there when they found Tim, saw the crazed look in his eyes and heard the sickening laugh play like her dreams original soundtrack. Then with everything that happened after, Tim had always been one of those untouchable subjects within the manor walls. Barbara didn’t even think Bruce had referred to Tim as anything other than Red Hood in years.

“You miss him, don’t you?” Barbara asked the question that everyone knew the answer to because they all had the same one.

“When I came back,” Dick paused to gather his thoughts as he often did when he spoke in longer phrases. “When I came back, Tim was gone. No one would tell me why. Until you. I never got to say sorry, or goodbye.”

She never got to say goodbye either, none of them did. Tim was a dead man that still walked around a Gotham as broken as himself all because she couldn’t get the intel fast enough. Bruce said he didn’t blame her, that the Joker was a madman and a genius, but Barbara couldn’t see how that was supposed to matter. Not when Tim could have been saved from that.

“Hey Dick, can I ask you something?” She waited until he nodded, and her throat almost closed up. “Did he look okay? Healthy?”

Dick observed her like he always did when he couldn’t understand the message behind someone’s words. His gaze passed over her fists and her down-turned eyes. “He looked good.”

Barbara let out a breath and smiled. “Good,” She said. “That’s good.”

In your court family au, does Bruce have any relationship with the justice league? We know the court keeps them out of Gotham after Jason’s death/attack, but would he get involved as a donor to help protect Gotham from world ending threats like alien invasions? What about relationships with individual members, were he and green arrow still childhood friends? Does he ever get interviewed by Clark Kent? How would Cobb feel about all this?

The only one he would have any kind of relationship with would be Ollie (much to Cobb’s consternation and jealousy).

He would know of the others though. Perhaps even about Ollie being Green Arrow (maybe Ollie even tells him and Bruce has to act real surprised and “omg are you serious? That’s so dangerous!” While Ollie is all “Bestie don’t worry I’ll protect you” and Cobb in the background is just like “if you hug him one more time I will eat your eyeballs”)

And of course, Bruce would have all kinds of contingencies in place in case the JLA were to target Gotham/the Court. And also a lot of tech that could stop pretty much any JLA member that could prove to be a problem.

I think he would still get involved with donations though, especially if he knows about Ollie and the threat was on a global scale. Other than that… not much. (And all the tech he provides has the nice little bonus of providing him with hidden data about league operation).

And yeah I think he does get interviewed by Clark at one point or another!

Clark obviously wouldn’t find anything about Bruce suspicious. His “bodyguard” on the other hand… (Cobb is hardcore glaring at Clark and keeping the kryptonite knife at the ready. He doesn’t trust beings that could kill Bruce in the blink of an eye on principle. No matter how saintly the public considers them.)

Clark totally brings up the possibility of Bruce having been taken hostage or brain washed during the next meeting, and Ollie almost falls over because—- what? No, what??? He thoguth Bruce and that scary dude were dating! And now he’s supposedly keeping him like a brain washed pet for money and power!? Superman, are you sure??? I’d thought Cavin is older than Dick. Is he? That does factor into aus?

Have any thoughts about Cavin in the Batfamily court of owls au?

I don’t think his age was specified but I could be wrong 🤔 but at most I think he’d be about three years older than Dick? Because when he was eight years old he escaped the dog kennel and was found by tha escape artist from Haly’s circus who trained him for a full summer until he passed away. By that point Calvin became the circus’ new performer. In the background we can see posters of the Flying Graysons, featuring Mary and John.

Dick wasn’t explicitly mentioned anywhere, but he must have been old enough at that point to see a picture of Calvin and go “huh, he looks familiar!” Even though roughly 25 years had passed at that point.

But yeah, I mean, fanfiction tweaks ages all the time! So we can have fics where Calvin is eight years older than Dick, or even the same age! Everything is possible 💚💚💚

In the Court batfam Au, depending on whether Bruce was already grandmaster when Calvin joined the Court, he would have kept a close eye on him from the start. In this Au Calvin wouldn’t actually have a reason to come to hate the Court if he became a Talon after Bruce’s ascent to Grandmaster, because Bruce would never order a hit on a young woman and her two year old daughter. And neither would he make the final “trial” to kill the Talon’s predecessor.

If Calvin joins the Court AFTER Bruce becomes grandmaster, there’s no way he’d allow Calvin to become a Talon in the first place. He takes one look at that neglected child, and Cobb already wants to wring his neck because he does NOT want to watch another brat…. (He’s gonna watch another brat)
