Jazz makes a deal with Desiree after finding her brother in their parent’s basement. And it’s not a pretty sight.
Her deal: Desiree gets a slightly longer leash (in a matter of speaking) as long as Danny and Jazz are safe. (Or something like that. Point is, she made a deal)
I wish this never happened and that Danny and I were safe somewhere else!
There’s a snap of fingers, a bright flash, then she’s outside in an unfamiliar city with sirens blaring and people wailing as a scarecrow runs by with some sort of gas, chased by someone dressed like Vlad adjacent except all black with a weird looking bat symbol on his chest.
Not normal, but also not the weirdest thing she’s seen.
But there’s no sign of Danny.
Desiree looks at Jazz and smiles bitterly, “I never said you’d be safe together.” And disappears.
Meanwhile, Danny wakes up screaming in an alley until he realizes he is not in pain and somehow has no wounds from their parents. His screams attract the attention of a man walking by, who comes to investigate, Danny decides to go invisible right in front of him which was dumb but he was injured just a couple seconds ago so cut him some slack. It really should have freaked the guy out, but he just has an astonished look on his face before also turning invisible.
Or: Jazz is sent to Gotham and Danny is sent to Coast City. Jazz becomes an unwilling part of scarecrow’s scheme (could be any villain) and is saved by a bat (any bat, although I prefer Red Hood or Robin) and Danny accidentally showed Martian Manhunter his powers.
Could work with Superman too in Metropolis. He could pick up a dumpster and throw it at Clark and Clark would calmly catch it while Danny is babbling/apologizing for getting scared and throwing something that could have killed the man, then slowly everything clicks and he disappears, leaving Clark Kent to investigate.
(Also background: Danny has just been told he will be the future Ghost King in this and Jazz was told by Clockwork that she would have a difficult decision and a difficult future in store but that it will be good for them and for the realms. Jazz doesn’t believe in fortune tellers, especially vague ones and says so to Clockwork’s face which cracks a smile. I’d personally write it as a Hardcover ship, but honestly if anyone wants to yoink this and do something else with it, I’d be okay with that too!)

I'd served thirty days of combat in Normandy, seventy-eight in Holland, thirty-nine in Bastogne, and thirty in Haguenau. And I wonder if, with war becoming such a part of you, you become like the Toyes and Guarneres of the world, people who lose a limb and yet have that phantom sensation that it's still there.
Sometimes, I couldn't get back to sleep. Or I'd just read or try studying at a desk, not that I was very good at that. I couldn't concentrate like before the war. I'd be reading some book and suddenly realize Roe was sitting beside me. Malark, I'm sorry, but it's Skip . . . I feared my grades were slipping badly.
— Excerpt from Don Malarkey in his book, Easy Company soldier : the legendary battles of a sergeant from World War II's "Band of Brothers", regarding life after the war

My Brother’s Hot Friend: Week Three
FtM Reader x Dragon
Week One, Week Two, Week Three, Week Four
You stood there, confused by what you’d heard. Did Drake really say that? Or were you so drunk that you were just hearing what you wanted to? There was no way your brother’s best friend, the guy you’d been pining after for years, said he missed you. Even if he did, he wouldn’t have meant it like that, right?
“What?” you said softly, looking down at the darkness where you know where your feet are.
Drake just muttered something you couldn’t hear as he lead you to a room. “You can sleep in here tonight. I’ll sleep on the coach.” Your fingers were still interlocked with his as he tried to set you on the bed. “C’mon now kid. You gotta let go.”
“Why?” you asked as you tugged on his hand, as if trying to pull him into bed with you, but really you just wanted him closer to you.
He chuckled slightly, and in the little bit of moonlight that filtered in through the window, you saw him smirk. “Let me get you some water and something to eat. You’ll feel better if you’re not so drunk.”
You knew he was right, but something about the way his rough and calloused hand felt in yours was even more intoxicating. You didn’t want to let it go. “Can I at least come with you?”
He laughed, a full hearted, deep laugh. It made your stomach churn and twist. He was perfect, and you were here with him. “Sure. You can come with me.”
You shakily stood up, but he stopped you. “Are you still wearing your binder?”
You nodded, knitting your brows. “Yeah. So?”
“How many hours has it been?”
“I don’t know.”
He growled softly, nudging you back towards the bed. “Y/N, come on. You have to be careful! Take it off.”
“I don’t want to,” you said stubbornly, letting go of his hand to wrap your arms around your chest.
“I’m just trying to help take care of you,” he argued as he tried coaxing your arms away from your chest.
When you started wriggling away from him, he grabbed your forearms, yanking them roughly away from your chest. “I said, take the binder off, Y/N. You can’t sleep with that thing on.”
Don’t forget to vote on what happens next!

This is not a new observation, but I think One Piece handles Doflamingo's backstory-- how it continues to affect his behavior and choices, as well as how it fits into the overall story-- exceptionally well. The villain who is evil due to a tragic past is a very well-established trope, but it is increasingly done quite poorly. Attempts to flesh out a villain and garner sympathy for them can become misguided justifications for their actions or goals, muddying the themes and tone of a story. My point isn't that morally complex characters can't be interesting when done competently and purpose; it's that when the villain with a tragic past is meant to be evil but his past becomes a justification, the writers' intended dynamics of the story are damaged.
Doflamingo's story never has that problem. His backstory makes it perfectly clear why he does the things he does, but it never implies that he is right to do them. It is a reason, not an excuse. The reader gets the sense that Doflamingo is very much the product of his childhood: first the golden excess of a Celestial Dragon, then the abrupt fall from grace into hatred and pain. It's the perfect storm to set a person down the worst paths possible.
But I think the reader might also feel (or at least I did) that this wasn't a fate set in stone. Doflamingo could have unlearned the ideology of a Noble and perhaps that the harm done to him doesn't justify further harm-- except that the only guidance he ever got was worship by Trebol and the other Executives, who were the nail in the coffin for any redemption Doflamingo might have had. Their appearance only validated and affirmed the beliefs Doflamingo already held regarding his place in the world.
Instead of ham-handed sympathy bait, Doflamingo's backstory is a beautifully executed extension of the worldbuilding and themes already present in the story. It is another tragedy in a world of tragedies, another story where children are put through hell. But without the external guidance and support the heroes get, Doflamingo takes the other path, becoming another perpetrator of tragedies, and a reminder that our heroes are the people they are as much (or more) because of the love and mentorship they had than due to innate goodness. It's the road less traveled, but they still might have traveled it.

ectoberhaunt24 day 21- analog fandom- dp x dc tw- none summary- Clockwork must do what is best for the time stream
masterlist ao3 part 3 of br
Clockwork stares at one of his screens. Two young boys are fighting. It will be a fight to the death. He closes his eyes when the killing blow is delivered. How he wishes that he could end their pain early. But there are paths that must be traversed, decisions that must be made, growth that must happen before these boys will see each other again.
They have very different paths, these two boys, yet the results will be the same. One dressed in red and green and yellow with a family he will grow to trust at his back, the other in monochrome with steadfast friends at his side.
He can see glimpses of their futures in other screens, all the different pathways branching out like the many limbs of a great yew tree. There will be joys and sorrows and tragedy, but they will make their way back to each other.
He wishes he could end their pain, but things must progress so that the future may be bright. Because if they were to meet again too early, or never to meet again at all, he can see only death and destruction and the End of all things in the screens that follow those paths.
He must hold strong, as he always has. It matters not that one of these boys will be like a son, that one of these precious children will rise to heights none has seen before with his brother at his side in the mortal plane. There has been a great imbalance in the Realms and with these boys, with these children, Clockwork can see the possibility for hope, for a future full of possibilities.
He twists his scepter a moment before the boy surges out of the Pit, already imbued with some of the effects of ectoplasm. He watches as the boy flees and when he collapses, Clockwork twists his scepter again and steps through the screen. He stares down at the young boy who will do great things. He takes him gently in his arms before stepping back through the screen and stepping through another. He emerges into another forest, and he places the boy down gently. He spares one last glance at the boy before going back through to the Long Now. Another twist of his scepter and time restarts.
The boy is in the right place now. Soon, he will be with whom he must in order to ensure a brighter future.
Clockwork turns his gaze back to the other boy. The child is sobbing quietly in his room. Clockwork’s core aches for him, for the terrible thing he was groomed to do. He will heal, but it will take much time, and many more terrible things will happen before then. He will do his best to guide the child’s path, as much as he can without gaining the Observants’ attention. They will not always be a problem, but for now he must work in the shadows.
He shall pay Nocturne a visit, request that they give the child pleasant dreams, and that they give the mother dreams that will encourage her to take her remaining son to his father sooner.
That is all Clockwork can do. Any more interference at this point and the Observants will come with orders that will only disrupt things. Clockwork can only sneer at their presumptuousness. They think they know the Path, but they are blinded to all the branching possibilities, to the twists and turns of Fate. They see only one way and not all the ways in which the future could shape itself.
He looks once more at the children. He has set them on their separate paths. Now it is time that they learn and grow into the roles Fate has set for them. For there must always be balance, and they will be the ones to bring it about.

randall really appreciates henry, as henry really appreciates him...
i imagine that randall is so keen on making hershel love archeology as much as he does because he's tired of people either finding his passion for it frivolous (his father, dalston) or dangerous (angela) - so far, henry's the only person who, by understanding archeology himself, can understand how much it means to randall.
all this talk of henry is interesting... given how strict and diligent he is, i'm getting the impression that randall's father sees servants as more valuable than sons, at least in terms of those he has. i wouldn't say that's made him treat henry the same as randall or better, as henry is a servant, but that's part of it: because henry's a servant, and a good one at that, he has no silly little hobbies or silly little emotions to get in the way of maintaining the household. mr ascot sees both of them in terms of their roles to that end, with randall as future head-of-household and henry as servant future butler, and he thinks henry better fits his role than randall fits his - he's in an inferior position, sure, but henry is more useful to the household name than randall is. ultimately, though, randall is treated as a son (even if he's treated badly), while henry isn't; you can imagine that, despite living under the same roof, they were not raised "together" in any real sense of the word. i don't suppose mr ascot really loves henry, per se, even if he's fond of him... i suppose i might find out later, but i'm unsure of how henry ended up in the ascot household to begin with. is he the child of some other staff at the house? was he orphaned, only to be taken in as a servant and not an adopted son? either way, he seems to have entered the picture surrounded by the knowledge that he wasn't truly part of the family, that he wasn't an ascot child... though i wondered how he entered the picture to begin with...

For the ask game
au where brudick happens but they keep it VERY hidden to the point only cass knows but she thinks everyone does cause to her it's so obvious, so one day on their monthly family dinner that no one misses she ask's them why they have different rooms when they always go to eachother during the night. What do you think would happen? Would they deny deny deny? would they ask her what she's talking about? how does everyone else react to this revelation? do the other heroes find out? do they have opinions about it?
for the ask game!
I LOVE THIS SHIT. truly love Cass noticing things she shouldn't and assuming they're common knowledge, it's my fave flavor. this is such a fun idea-
so Cass knows from like, day one. and obviously she never says anything bc she assumes this is normal. in a way, the weird vibes between Bruce and Dick *are* normalized to the Batfam, everyone sort of. tiptoes around their weirdness (even if they don't know it's romantic) so Cass learns to do the same. she doesn't mention it bc no one mentions Bruce and Dick's bond, it's only ever acknowledged with shared looks. it takes years before she has the courage to ask and i think it's fun if she asks for an utterly mundane reason. like, Alfred makes a teasing remark about washing everyone's bedsheets and what a task that is, and Cass just drops it into conversation that Dick's bed is rarely used because he's always in Bruce's, so that must make it easier to handle.
Dick was try to play it off as a joke. just the mention would make Bruce go silent, for once finally not having a contingency plan on how to handle something. he and Dick were never supposed to happen in the first place, it was so accidental he's never considered the possibility of someone finding out bc they're so careful, though in hindsight, of course he should've known Cass would've figured it out. Dick would awkwardly laugh, try to say something to the effect of "very funny, but we're not *that* close haha" just to break the tension. Cass doesn't give in, though. she's not the best at social cues and doesn't understand the desperate look Dick is giving her, trying to get her to drop it. she pushes on and corrects Dick, insisting she doesn't judge them for it. Bruce would finally snap back into reality and give a more serious denial, quickly changing the conversation before anyone else can press.
the issue is, the minute Cass says it out loud, it becomes *so* obvious. especially to Tim, who has the biggest "oh my GOD" lightbulb moment of his life. there is no unseeing it. it takes him a while to process how he feels about it, the same with everyone else. for a week, there's an obvious tension. no one will say anything, but everyone knows and is trying to sit with it to decide how they feel. it's not a simple situation to feel one way or another about. that's when the questions start. Tim asks Dick questions, Alfred asks Bruce questions. how old was Dick, how did it happen, all the things Dick and Bruce have never wanted to have to answer. bc none of the questions have clean answers. it was a slow and gradual relationship. sure, they can say the first time they slept together, but that doesn't *really* count as the start of things. the start goes back to when Dick was still a teenager, probably underage. even if nothing happened, they both knew. and the way they dance around the questions makes that obvious.
most of the Batfamily i think, would begrudgingly accept it. it's too late to convince Bruce and Dick out of it now, and at the end of the day, Bruce and Dick will always choose each other over anyone else. fighting it just increases the chances of getting ostracized and pushed away by the two of them. feelings vary. i think Alfred would be the least happy about it because he was there when Dick was just a 10 yr old. everyone else only has memory of Dick as an adult, but Alfred watched Dick grow up, raised by Bruce, so he just can't shake that image. Tim sees it as one of those things you just have to accept about Batman, and carefully considers his role as Robin and makes sure he focuses on making sure Dick is happy/safe as well as Bruce. if nothing else, Tim will put his feelings aside to be the Emotional Support Child. Barbara would distance herself from the Batfam for a while just to sit on it, because she also saw Dick as a kid and it sits wrong with her. long talks with Dick convince her to let it go, but she does keep a *much* closer eye on Bruce to be sure this doesn't become a pattern. i think she'd enlist Cass to make sure Bruce never shows romantic/sexual attraction toward other Robins. Steph and Jason are equally apathetic toward it, being the ones who are most negative toward Bruce. they just shrug and go "yeah sounds like some shit Bruce would do". Damian's a bit of a toss-up. i think it'd really throw him for a loop and he'd be far more critical of Dick in the beginning, but once he approves of Dick, he'd *really* latch onto him.
i do think the rest of the hero community would find out. not on purpose, but the leak happens. Babs vents her feelings about it to Dinah, Helena, and Zinda. Tim mutters about it to the Titans. and Jason will tell anyone who asks because he doesn't have a rat's ass to give about Bruce's precious reputation. (if anything, he'd purposefully try to ruin Bruce with that info) the hero community... varies. i think Oliver would be the *most* pissed. Oliver is very similar to Bruce, in that he's taken in his share of strays, but he was objectively a lot better at it than Bruce. it causes a minor public scandal when Oliver drinks too much at some gala and just. publically beats the shit out of Bruce Wayne, incoherently talking about something to do with him being a creep. i could see Oliver rallying support from people like Barry and Arthur who also have young sidekicks and would agree it being fucked up. i don't think Bruce would be entirely ejected from the hero community, but he would be quietly removed as a chair member of the Justice League and have most of his power as a team leader stripped. no matter how much damage control Dick does, insisting he was an adult when anything real happened and he consented, no one can look at Bruce the same. sort of a bittersweet ending, Bruce and Dick are together and no one can take that from them, but there's still realistic reaction and blowback to it, which i personally think is a lot of fun.
