Layton’s response to Luke stating how his mother disappeared. It’s an understandable reaction, but it stood out to me as it’s quite rare to see this level of shock in the professor’s text (?!).

Up to this point he presumably believed Clark’s explanation that she was away on family matters, as he had no reason to suspect him of lying. Luke’s very different and startling take would let him know that there was much more going on than met the eye, and that Clark had been less than truthful, in one fell swoop. Brenda was also the professor’s schoolmate and friend, which probably added to his concern.
