tags: angst with a happy ending, hurt/comfort, established relationship, protective!percy, hints at revenge

if you ever get kidnapped then gods help the person who did that, because percy is going to find them and if he does, he'll do unthinkable things to them!

he won't rest until he has found you and made sure you are safe. that's his main concern!

he'll go for days without sleeping on his search for you and the only thing that's keeping him from collapsing from exhaustion is his concern for you and the hatred towards the one that took you away from him

he knows this isn't healthy, but he can't help himself. they could be doing horrible things to you while he's resting and he couldn't forgive himself if he'd make you suffer for longer than you needed to

once he knows where to find you, he'll head out on his own, without telling anyone at camp. if they are lucky, they manage to follow him and catch up to him before he reaches you

however if he's alone, there is nobody holding him back…

once he finally finds you, his main concern is getting you out of that place and making sure you're okay

he'll carry you out and hold you in his arms for a few minutes, kissing your forehead as he tells you how much he missed you and how sorry he is that he wasn't here any sooner

but he assures you that you don't need to worry anymore! he's here now and he'll protect you. nobody is ever going to lay a finger on you again

he'll make sure of it…

He shrugged. "Maybe I am." Jackson then shot him a smile and started to lay down. "Do we have a deal?"

"Yeah uh– I guess we do," he grinned back. Given how hit or miss things could be in their environment, it seriously was a relief to be able to say that. "What are you the most glad for lately?"

"Alright, fair play." Jackson relented with a bright laugh when Cyrus pointed out he was similarly inclined when it came to his temperament. "It seems to me we have plenty of things to be glad of as of late anyway so it makes sense."

I know there’s a lot to love about Percy Jackson but I really think his fatal flaw is what gets us all. I think the super-protective, loyal-to-a-fault, ride-or-die, shortsighted tunnel-visioned simplicity of him is what we like so much. Other heroes, like Luke Skywalker or Zuko or Superman, hear about who their fathers are or what their heritage is and it just riddles them with angst and melodrama. And we love them too.

But Percy spends much less time going “who am I and what is the deep metaphysical purpose of my being?” and much more time going, “I don’t care if I just learned Minotaurs are real and I’ve lost fights with middle-schoolers before: it has my mom, so one of us is going to die on this hill.”

There’s just this simplicity to him. He just goes with his gut. He can learn a devastating secret or world-bending truth, and then two seconds later, be like, “cool, what’s next?” because his gut so consistently responds to every situation with “I’m either going to protect the people I love or die making fun of the bad guys.”
