Okay so, this whole immunity thing only applies to former presidents, right? Meaning that Congress could still impeach them for misconduct. But if they were impeached for criminal misconduct, they can go skipping out of the White House without a care in the world as determining if their actions are official or unofficial may take years. Or if it's a president's "constitutional power" then it can never be tried as criminal even if they literally do what Sotomayor says at the end of her dissent.
This is such a blatant move to help Trump it's making my head hurt. Absolutely batshit insane this comes out the week of July 4th. It's the same mentality as "Guys, cops won't want to protect you if you film them and want them to be held accountable for their wrongdoings. 🥺" But for the fucking president of the united states of america.
Also Chevron, the quid pro quo "gifts" case, can't sleep outside in "public places" if you're homeless, Roe v. Wade being overturned... Along with the fact that Thomas signalled he's waiting for the perfect case so he can reverse Obergefell v. Hodges, fuck these partisan hacks.
this might be the most insane thing in the history of the entire US actually
#what terrifies me is that under this ruling if we have another widespread national protest like George Floyd/BLM#there's nothing to stop the president from labeling it a terrorist movement and having the army mow people down in the streets.#since that makes sense that would fall under constitutional powers as commander in chief.#and even if it's not#proving that will take years as prosecutors can only say “this happened” but can't prove criminal and illegal intent.#We all know that Cannon will never let Trump be convicted for stealing classified documents but this just reset her stopwatch#Boycott 4th of July

i want to make a post rallying people to boycott this july 4th- tyranny day- by avoiding celebrations and avoiding spending money on it and instead taking the day to reflect on all of the freedoms we have lost recently
but it seems only about five of my followers care about the growing threat of fascism in the united states of america and i don't think any of them are from america. i don't think it would do any good to try, i will continue to be silenced for the rest of my life and that is what the fascists want so

A brief list of why the Fourth of July could and should always be boycotted, by Jeff Smith:
-The US has engaged in genocidal policies against Indigenous people/nations on this continent since the founding of the US. White Settler Colonialism has been the primary driving force, which has included the outright slaughter of Indigenous people, the forced removal from their lands, the repeated violation of treaties, forcibly removing Indigenous children from their communities and putting them in so-called “Boarding Schools,” and the denial of Indigenous people to celebrate their own spiritual traditions for most of the past 250 years. For an excellent resource, see Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz’s book, An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States.
-If people haven’t read it, they should read Frederick Doughlass’ famous 1852 speech, entitled, “What, to the Slave, is the Fourth of July?” Douglass calls out the realities of slavery and denounces the blind celebration of July 4th, by saying, “What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelly to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade, and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy—a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices, more shocking and bloody, than are the people of these United States, at this very hour.”
-While Chattel Slavery was outlawed by the end of the Civil War, the US legal and economic systems made sure that Black people were still denied freedom and independence. The 13th Amendment essentially made slavery legal again, a theme which is explored in Ava DuVernay’s 2016 award winning documentary, 13th. In addition, the history of lynching, red-lining, legal segregation, the War on Drugs, mass incarceration, gentrification and the ongoing efforts to dismantled legal gains made by the Black Freedom Struggle/Civil Rights Movement, ultimately demonstrates that Black people have never been afforded the same freedom as white people in this country.
-The history of US immigration policy has excluded millions of people from coming to and be accepted into US society. From the Chinese Exclusion Act in the late 19th Century, the refusal of the FDR Administration to welcome thousands of Jews fleeing Nazi Germany, to the brutal treatment of people fleeing poverty, political oppression and climate catastrophe from Latin America since the 1960s, the US has consistently excluded millions of immigrants seeking asylum and safety. See our popular education tool, History of US Immigration Policy.
-The US has a bloody history towards working class people, which has always been directed by the Capitalist Class, with assistance from the state and the state’s main enforcement mechanism, the police. From the earliest efforts to win labor struggles in the early part of the 19th Century, the harsh repression of radical union organizing in the late 19th Century through the 1930s, and the ongoing Capitalist Class’s war against working people, evidenced by the efforts against Amazon and Starbucks workers, most people living in this country have never experienced economic freedom or independence. See Kim Kelly’s book, Fight Like Hell: The Untold History of American Labor.
-The US has consistently marginalized and repressed people who are part of the LGBTQ community, those who are gender non-conforming; religious minorities, especially Muslims, those in the disability community, anti-war dissidents, radical environmentalists and so many other communities that the systems of power in this country have never accepted and have often brutalized.

Multinational conglomerate Unilever, the owner of some 400 brands, announced Tuesday it is spinning off its ice cream business — including major names like Ben & Jerry's, Breyers, Magnum, Popsicle and Klondike — after more than a century.
The consumer goods giant said the move was part of a growth strategy that would create a leaner business. At the same time, by shedding Ben & Jerry's, Unilever is ridding itself of a longtime headache.
Since its founding in 1978, Ben & Jerry's has been known for its left-leaning advocacy, and the Vermont-based ice cream maker was able to maintain an independent board of directors to continue its progressive activism even after it sold to Unilever in 2000.
But in recent years, the unique structure of the deal that allowed Ben & Jerry's to wade into controversial issues without interference has pulled Unilever into the fray, too.
The biggest lightening rod began in July 2021, when Ben & Jerry’s announced it would no longer sell its products to Israelis in the West Bank, which the company refers to as Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The move sparked outrage from both sides of the political aisle amid accusations that the company was boycotting Israel as part of the boycott, divest, sanctions (BDS) movement, which Ben & Jerry's denied. Israel threatened to take action against Unilever over the move, and U.S. lawmakers called on the Securities and Exchange Commission to launch a probe into the parent company.
Unilever — which has repeatedly distanced itself from Ben & Jerry's political takes and said it has never supported the BDS movement — sold the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream operations in Israel in June 2022 in an attempt to stem the controversy, but its subsidiary's activism has continued to tarnish the brand and drag Unilever with it.
Ben & Jerry's was also hit with its own boycott threat last year after the company angered some Americans on Independence Day with a post on Twitter (now X) that read, "This 4th of July, it's high time we recognize that the US exists on stolen Indigenous land and commit to returning it."
Several U.S. states have divested their public employee retirement funds from Unilever over Ben & Jerry's ending sales of its products in parts of Israel, including Arizona, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Texas and most recently North Carolina.
North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell, a Republican, told FOX Business in an interview earlier this year that it’s not likely Unilever anticipated allowing Ben & Jerry's to have its own board would lead to so many problems.
"I don’t know the people at Ben & Jerry’s. I respect their entrepreneurship. I think when they signed the contract, Ben & Jerry’s anticipated something like this," said Folwell, also a 2024 candidate for governor.
"Unilever didn’t anticipate anything like this," he continued. "Generally, when a parent tells a kid not to do something, they expect them to listen."

Very sad to hear my guy Peter Higgs (of Higgs Boson fame) passed away earlier in the week. He was a decent fella from my limited knowledge of him; an activist supporting the campaign against nuclear weapons, the boycott of Israel, and many other good causes, as well as being an incredible scientist at the forefront of particle physics.
Learning about CERN and the search for the Higgs Boson was one of the main reasons I went into physics at uni — I stayed off school on the day of the LHC switch-on in 2008 to follow the coverage and listen to the Torchwood radio play they'd created for the occasion; woke up at the crack of dawn on my 18th birthday (4th July 2012) to watch the livestream announcement they'd finally found the Higgs Boson; caught Peter Higgs at various physics events and talks around Edinburgh when I moved up there later that year.
Later on, after leaving uni and moving away from Edinburgh, I met a friend who'd worked at CERN back when the discovery happened. She'd got to know Peter Higgs fairly well, the two of them travelling back and forth between Edinburgh and the LHC together on occasion. She was with him in the plane back home when he got the call they'd found his boson, and, as she recounted, they'd cracked open a small bottle of champagne together to celebrate.
Probably my favourite Peter Higgs story though, is from the Nobel Prize announcement. A quiet guy who had no interest in the limelight, he wasn't one for big celebrations. He knew the Higgs Boson would win the Nobel Prize that year, so as the story goes, on the day of the announcement he told his friends and colleagues he was off on a hike up in the hills and so would be unreachable, but instead simply turned off his phone and went down to the local pub for lunch.
I believe he told this at a science festival talk I attended a year or two after the fact, but I can't be sure. All I remember is sitting on the steps of The Mound in the middle of Edinburgh, sharing a pizza post-talk, and thinking how lucky I was to exist in both the universe and the city at such time of scientific discoveries.
So. thank you I guess to Peter Higgs, for everything.
#here's the post I was gonna make when I got the news#please enjoy the main two Peter Higgs stores I carry around#Peter Higgs#physics#Nic stuff#science

Okay, before I go Tag Diving any deeper, I want to get my initial thoughts out.
So uhh. The "DEGENERATE" music video has some content that's not emet*phobia safe. I'm saying it now to get it out of the way, out of my head, and think about the Content of the song and video instead. (I had to rewatch the music video while braced for it to get over the phobia reaction.)
The song's one of those ones that I had to listen a few times to warm up to. (I wasn't in great shape yesterday, which is when I found out about it. Because I went to the Starset collection-- they're becoming a comfort media for me-- and I found out about DEGENERATE because they were QUICK to add it to their Complete Collection on Spotify!)
I freaking LOVE the lyrics. The wordplay (especially on "have yourself a nice doomsday"). I have some quibbles with the lyrics transcriptions posted on other sites (I am very sure that line is "We're turning back to animals"), but as always, they're SO freaking atmospheric and paint a vivid picture of the dystopian story they're telling.
The extensive growling is well produced but not one of my favorites aesthetically. It doesn't have that energizing hook of hope and defiance that Brave New World does, though I think that was super intentional. It has a dismal message, and the music feels beaten-down and enraged over it (as it should!). Rage was just never an emotion that Enticed me.
And then there's the music video. Interesting that they chose to call it a "visualizer" instead of a "music video". Like, they're not trying to hide the fact that this is AI generated.
The imagery of respected historical figures in excess and hedonism. I thought at first that it was some kind of commentary on historical revisionism, but I saw someone call it a commentary on imperialism, and I definitely see it now. Especially since this song/video dropped on July 4th. It could very well be BOTH.
"Manufactured victims of manufactured gains." The victims and gains are both a product of the system, artificially created for artificial ends. See the part about historical figures and hedonism.
Zooming in on the phone at the line "and have yourself a nice doomsday"? I don't think that was accidental. Glorious! I think the commentary on consumption can be applied to consumption of news and ragebait and bullying and "manufactured gains" online, too. (Not to mention, the overarching theme in this band's lore over the past decade being about The Dangers of Technology Used Wrong.)
I think there's some wordplay with the entire song being called "DEGENERATE" re: the verb for AI creation being "generate". Like the generation of the content this song is about is, in fact, leading to degeneration.
Especially considering a PRETTY FREAKING IMPORTANT plot point in "A Brief History of the Future",* I DEFINITELY think the use of AI is Commentary^tm and not an endorsement.
(* I'll summarize that plot point below the cut to avoid spoilers for those who don't want to see them.)
But I do have to say: using AI to make that commentary on AI by having it whip up images of overconsumption and hedonism and climate disaster may be a brilliant stroke of irony, but it still contributed to the whole climate disaster thing, because even creating ironic images has a very real and literal impact via power and water usage…
So I'm not thrilled about it, but I see what they were trying to do. Just… didn't have the best way of going about it.
I'm not going to boycott the band over this but I do have to cringe about it. Especially considering the environmental-conservation-leaning images of a polar bear and a seal looking up at you amidst a sea of pollution. If you care so much about conservation, please don't contribute to it like this… I get the message, but you can send messages without donning the wolf's clothes to do it.
--
So about this AI thing in A Brief History of the Future.
I'm not going to spoil the whole plot twist (if you haven't read ABHotF and want me to explain what happens, let me know!), but it turns out an AI is in fact trying to "occupy" the entire human race. (Basically usurp their minds and control their bodies to its own ends.) It's the big climactic struggle, trying to shut it down. Feeding/empowering the AI is undoubtedly seen as evil, there are like two whole scenes emphasizing how "yeah you can TRY to justify and defend it, but this is still An Evil Thing." (Our protag literally argues with its creator about it. Twice.)
It does echo kind of emptily after being undermined by its extensive use for an entire song, though…

Though workers in many states started throwing Labor Day parades throughout the 1880s, it might never have become a national holiday if not for a historic strike and boycott that started in May 1894, when employees of a railcar manufacturer called Pullman Palace Car Company suffered deep wage cuts. They were joined in a sympathy boycott by the American Railway Union, which had around 150,000 members.
This huge coalition disrupted the nation; the USPS couldn't deliver mail in certain parts of the country. Railway transportation was an essential service, and essential workers were demanding better treatment.
In the midst of this unrest, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making Labor Day an official holiday, which some historians say was a move to make workers less hostile and to calm the waters during a period of continued labor discontent.
On July 4th, Cleveland sent 10,000 federal troops to Chicago to brutally end the strike. Thirteen workers were killed and 53 seriously injured there, with more than 30 killed throughout the nation that summer. The strike ended in failure for the Pullman workers, who won none of their demands.
Railway companies started to hire nonunion workers to restart business. By the time the strike ended, it had cost the railroads millions of dollars in lost revenue and in looted and damaged property. Striking workers had lost more than $1 million in wages.
On July 20, 1894, the strike ended. Less than two weeks later, the Pullman Company reopened their doors, agreeing to rehire the striking workers on one condition — they would sign a pledge to never join a union.
