SO I've finally started reading Toilers of the sea, I'm at part three. You mentioned how Deruchette is the Real Villain once, is that later or do you have a deep theory about that?

at least only five (5) people have apparently read Toilers of the Sea in this generation, so I don’t get Hot Takes about how REALLY the TRUE villain of the piece is Deruchette

that was just me venting about how often I run into Bookthink analyses that totally miss the point; in particular, it’s part of a longer joint-venting conversation about how many Official Critics somehow come to the conclusion that Count of Monte Cristo is a pro-vengeance novel when that is exactly the opposite point of the book 

TLDR, I think calling Deruchette the True Villain is about as wrong a Take as possible? 

...I am a little surprised how little commentary I’ve found on Deruchette as Adele II expy though
