What was your first Naomi Novik read?
Mine was Spinning Silver but I've heard a lot of fantastic reviews of Uprooted so I must get round to reading it.

The Neverending Reading List: Book LXIX

"Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity" by Dr. Devon Price, Ph.D.
For every visibly Autistic person you meet, there are countless “masked” Autistic people who pass as neurotypical. Masking is a common coping mechanism in which Autistic people hide their identifiably Autistic traits in order to fit in with societal norms, adopting a superficial personality at the expense of their mental health. This can include suppressing harmless stims, papering over communication challenges by presenting as unassuming and mild-mannered, and forcing themselves into situations that cause severe anxiety, all so they aren’t seen as needy or “odd.” In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares his personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain. Most masked Autistic individuals struggle for decades before discovering who they truly are. They are also more likely to be marginalized in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other factors, which contributes to their suffering and invisibility. Dr. Price lays the groundwork for unmasking and offers exercises that encourage self-expression, including:
Celebrating special interests
Cultivating Autistic relationships
Reframing Autistic stereotypes
And rediscovering your values
It’s time to honor the needs, diversity, and unique strengths of Autistic people so that they no longer have to mask—and it’s time for greater public assistance and accommodation of difference. In embracing neurodiversity, we can all reap the rewards of nonconformity and learn to live authentically, Autistic and neurotypical people alike.
DEVON PRICE, PhD, is a social psychologist, professor, author, and proud Autistic person. His research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and the Journal of Positive Psychology. Devon’s writing has appeared in outlets such as the Financial Times, HuffPost, Slate, Jacobin, Business Insider, LitHub, and on PBS and NPR. He lives in Chicago, where he serves as an assistant professor at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

What are your bookish plans for the weekend? 📚🍂 . Oh, we are so glad the weekend is here! A few days ago we were on our way to the airport when a truck crashed into us, and now sister & I are stuck wearing neck braces. 🥹 At first it was only me because I did not had the chance to brace myself for the impact (Isabel did), but a day later sister started to feel the strain and our doctor has also made her wear one. We are quite the pair right now. 😂👌 . But thankfully we are alright & we should be off the braces in a few weeks. And now we are just taking it as a sign to just stay home reading & taking bookish photos. 📚😪 And we shall treat ourselves to new books! I think we deserve them. 👀🍂 . . #bookishfeed #whatiread #bookobsession #totalbooknerd #readingbooks #readerlife #bookcommunity #bookphotography https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn-P6dWyu6A/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“That’s how the story works, the way each sentence and metaphor and reference feeds into the other to illuminate something important. That explosion of discovery, of understanding, is the most intoxicating moment there is” “And for a moment, the space between hearts, I felt I could glimpse the world Charley saw. A world of light and shadows, of fact, truth and story, each blurring into one another as sleep and wakefulness blur in the early morning” This story was entertaining enough as I followed brothers Charley and Robert Sutherland in their adventure involving living fictional characters. Charley was an adorable mess as he accidentally conjured up Sherlock Holmes and the villianous Uriah Heep. It was interesting with them asking what makes a character alive and if they should be deemed human or inanimate as the books they come from. The author showed good literary understanding through Charley’s character-liminal spaces and exploring the darkness under a Dickensian world. The story was cool, but the character perspectives drew me out of it at times. For the majority of the story, it’s told from Rob’s perspective, along with Millie and Lydia to a lesser extent. Charley’s segments-diary entries-were shorter. I think the third person writing style would’ve better favored this story. Otherwise, a cool story. #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookstagram #bookcommunity #bookobsessed #bookishpost #bookishlife #bookishfeature #mybookfeatures #mybookfeature #readerlife #readingaddict #readinglife #bookobsession #bookobsessed #avidreader #readersgonnaread https://www.instagram.com/p/CoFtBL9LkTF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hey Bookdragons! Happy Thursday! How has your week been going? I have a bit of a headache today and I want to eat all the snacks. 🔪 🔪 Am I the only one who prefers the original US cover of Cruel Illusions over the Fairyloot edition? I mean it’s pretty but the original is better. Anyway, this is on my hopeful TBR for this month. 🔪 🔪 Q: Are there any books you want to make a point of reading this month? 🔪 🔪 #Bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramfeature #bookish #bookworm #bookdragon #booknerd #booklover #bookaddict #bookaholic #bibliophile #booksarelife #booksofinstagram #bookobsessed #bookobsession #bookphotography #bookblogger #booklove #reader #bookgram #igbooks #instabook #bookporn #wisconsinbookstagrammer #bookphoto https://www.instagram.com/p/CpTdrKpLvdu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Serpent & The Wings of Night
Tumblr media
Dates Read: 8/21/24 - 9/1/24
“Maybe our skin doesn’t scar the same as yours, but our hearts do. Sometimes they never heal.” • I picked this book up (and renewed my KU subscription) at my little sister’s behest. And even though she still hasn’t started reading it, I’m absolutely hooked on this series!! The pace never slowed, the world building was seamless and grew more intriguing with every chapter. Oraya was also such an intriguing MC and I thoroughly enjoyed her voice.
So many of my favorite tropes can be found in this: vicious vampires, a competition to the death, a rueful goddess, and a slow burn romance that culminates in something spicy 🌶️🔥
If you’re looking for a bloody good time then please read this and DM me all your thoughts because I tire of waiting for someone to talk to about this! ❤️🩸 • E’s rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Neverending Reading List: Book LX

"The Viking Art of War" by Paddy Griffith
Of all the warrior cultures in history, few had as fierce a reputation as the Vikings—the mysterious, seafaring Norsemen who ravaged, conquered, and explored lands from Near Asia to the New World. During the early medieval period, nothing could strike as much fear among sedentary peoples as the sight of a Viking fleet suddenly rising over the horizon, their distinctive, dragon-decorated “long ships” intent on delivering mayhem. Yet the actual facts about the Vikings’ era of rampage have been elusive, and their actual method of warfare unclear. Now, this groundbreaking and authoritative study of the Vikings establishes the facts behind their rise to prominence, and cuts away the myths that have built up about their military and seafaring skills, reputation, and exploits. In this book, renowned military historian Paddy Griffith applies modern military thinking to his incisive examination of the Viking art of war while examining their tactics, seamanship, mobility, strategy, concept of battle, and how they exploited their victories and dealt with defeat. He also examines how threatened populations sought to cope with their raiders, and how capricious weather at times wreaked more havoc on Viking fleets than did their human foes. In these pages Griffith demonstrates just how the Vikings were able to establish colonies in hostile territories while confronting an enormously diverse range of enemies—from the Franks of the Carolingian Empire and the Anglo-Saxons to the Volga Bulgars and the wild tribes of Ireland—across three centuries of military conquest, battle, and adventure. Carefully separating historical truth from legend, while closely examining the sometimes fanciful sagas of the Norsemen themselves, this stimulating investigation into the secrets of the Vikings’ success shows how they earned their fearsome reputation throughout the world.
PADDY GRIFFITH was a senior lecturer in War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for sixteen years, and is the author of numerous books and articles on the history of warfare, including Battle Tactics of the Western Front, 1916-18, The Art of War of Revolutionary France, 1789-1802, and Battle Tactics of the Civil War.

What books are you excited to add to your shelves soon? 😍📚🍂 . We have several books on their way to us and we just cannot wait to receive them! One is the anniversary edition of If We Were Villains which is beyond gorgeous. 😍🖤 Two others are The Atlas Paradox & Heart of the Sun Warrior, sequel to Daughter of the Moon Goddess (can’t believe it’s almost out 😱). . We did not receive a lot of bookmail last month but we think November will be much more fun. Now the only struggle will be to find some shelf space, though it’s a nice problem to have. 😉🤎 . . #bookwormlife #bookobsession #booknerdigan #booksaremagic #fortheloveofreading #librosymaslibros #bookmail https://www.instagram.com/p/CkrGQskvyao/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
