Couple of thoughts on this:

Firstly, it's a sanga not a hotdog - a bun would be wrong.

I vividly remember migrating to Australia as a kid and being bewildered by the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, but after decades as an Aussie I can't imagine anything else.

But secondly and more importantly, the Bunnings sausage sizzle is a thing because it's a fundraiser. A mutually beneficial one.

Bunnings makes the effort to supply all the equipment - the barbecues, the payment machine, the fire safety stuff, the gazebo. All the volunteers gotta do is rock up with their aprons, tongs, gloves, and the food. This works well for the company since they get to look good in the community, plus they get increased business on the day since the whoever is organising the fundraiser is gonna tell everyone and their dog about it in an effort to raise more money. All the money goes to the cause BTW, Bunnings doesn't take any, they're basically letting people come and use the space and their barbecues for free.

Also, in my experience as a volunteer, the food is often donated too. The local Woollies or Coles might be convinced to supply saussies and bread, if the fundraiser is for a school project then the parents who can't spare the time to volunteer will often donate cans of drink. Cheap food is thus almost mandatory since it allows the budget to stretch further and the fundraiser to make more money.

And finally, since this is batship-auspol....

Overseas followers if you think our language is weird, just know that in Australia we have replaced the tradition of Sunday Church with a new tradition of going to a hardware store to eat sausages in the carpark.

Here is JFK's daughter attending one as part of a diplomatic mission of the American Ambassador (and no we are 100% not making this up).

At one point the hardware store banned people putting onion on top of their sausages due to all the injuries from people dropping them, and it was a national news story/outrage for weeks.
