Top Five Travel Stops in 2025!

It is hard to narrow down favorites, this year was a whirlwind of travel stops and fun, but some of the stops were just the best! They are in alphabetical order rather than in order of what I enjoyed the most. Out of these top ten stops, I don’t have a decided favorite, they were all great for different reasons! So you want to know more about Big Barda

As Tumblr's resident expert on all things Barda, and as Kelly Thompson's Birds of Prey run brings far more attention to the character, I figured it was high time someone stepped in and gave the tumblr world a primer on DC's biggest and boldest heroine.

The Basics:

Introduced in Mister Miracle #4 by Jack Kirby, Big Barda was once the leader of Apokolips' premier death squad, the Female Furies. Trained from birth for a life of violence by Granny Goodness, Barda spent the first 250 years of her life as a living weapon. This all changed when she met Scott Free, a gentle Parademon-in-training with a mysterious past and a knack for escapes. Eventually, she and Scott both escaped to Earth, where they fell in love with both the Earth and each other. She's a lover, she's a fighter, she's a Pokémon card expert, but most of all, SHE BIG.

Barda's signature defining attribute is her raw strength. Her raw muscle allows her to keep up with heavy hitters like Wonder Woman. This isn't to suggest that she's a simple-minded brute, however-- Barda has centuries of military experience under her belt as leader of the Female Furies. She's mastered multiple weapons, including spears, swords, and her signature Mega-Rod.

Below are some reading recommendations for anyone interested in Big Barda:

Essential Runs:

Mister Miracle Vol. 1 #4-18 by Jack Kirby (1971-1974)

This was the run that introduced the world to Big Barda, as well as the Female Furies. If you want to know the basics of Barda, there's no better place to start. This run is collected in a trade, as well as a part in The Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 1.

(NOTE: Even though Barda doesn't appear until issue #4, I suggest you start with Issue #1. It'll help you get acquainted with the rest of the mythos.)

Justice League International #14-24 by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis (1988-1989)

Big Barda was on the JLI! She plays off the other characters as well as ever, and a lot of what's great about her in Jack Kirby's original run is still here! Definitely check this one out if you want to see her in another team setting. This has been collected in this omnibus.

(NOTE: Once again, I recommend you start from issue #1.)

Mister Miracle Vol. 4 #1-12 by Tom King and Mitch Gerads (2017-2018)

Yeah, I know.

Listen, Tom King is a writer with... idiosyncrasies to put it nicely. The characters in the periphery of his stories tend to act really out of character, and his dialogue can be clunky at times. That being said, The Scott/Barda dynamic in this book is excellent, and this book has some of the best art that the Fourth World has seen since the 80s. The series has been collected in a trade.

(NOTE: Did you know that the CIA has over 2003 files on Tom King? Look up "Tom King CIA 2003" for more info!)

Mister Miracle: The Great Escape by Varian Johnson and Daniel Isles (2022)

If you're at all interested in the idea of a Young Adult reimagining of Mister Miracle and Big Barda's origin story with an all-black cast, this book was made for you. It's a bit heavy on the YA tropes, but the Scott/Barda dynamic is really solid. It was released as a standalone graphic novel.

Birds of Prey Vol. 5 #1-??? by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero (2023-)

Admit it, this is the reason you're here. The Cassandra Cain & Big Barda is so instantly iconic, I'm surprised no writer has paired them up sooner. It also helps that this book has the single best Barda look since Jack Kirby's original run. Plus, she gets to throw down with Wonder Woman! What's not to love? This run is still ongoing, but the first 6 issues should be getting a trade pretty soon.

(NOTE: I started writing this before BOP #8 dropped, I had no idea about that thing that happens in the newest issue.)

Stories to Avoid:

Action Comics #592-593 by John Byrne (1987)

This is not a comic book-- it's an infohazard designed to cause pain and suffering to anyone who knows of its existence. Its premise is vile and disrespectful on the surface, and it becomes more insidious when you learn the context of its creation. This pair of issues is profoundly evil, rivaling even Avengers #200 in terms of loathsomeness.

For those who dare to investigate this, Content Warnings for rape, mind control, and human trafficking.

Anyway, let's end on something a bit lighter, shall we?

Remember that Mister Miracle YA graphic novel I mentioned earlier? Barda is getting a graphic novel of her own this summer! It's not out at the time of writing, but the preview pages look promising!

Push you out of bed (established relationship with Cassian)

It was late at night, the room dark and quiet except for the steady rhythm of Cassian’s breathing beside you. You had been deep in sleep, cocooned in the warmth of the blankets, when suddenly, without warning, a powerful shove sent you rolling to the edge of the bed. Before you could react, you felt yourself slip right off the side, tumbling onto the floor with a muffled thud.

Disoriented and still half-asleep, you blinked up at the ceiling, trying to figure out what just happened. You could feel the cool air of the room brushing against your skin, a sharp contrast to the warmth you had been wrapped in moments before. For a few seconds, you were too confused to do anything but lay there, your brain sluggishly trying to piece together why you were suddenly on the floor.

A rustle of wings from above caught your attention, and you heard a deep, sleepy groan. Cassian, still sprawled across the bed with his massive wings and large frame, was clearly oblivious to the chaos he had caused. One of his arms had taken over the space you were supposed to occupy, and his wings were draped over the other side of the bed like he was trying to claim every inch of the king-sized mattress.

“Cassian,” you muttered, sitting up slowly, rubbing your eyes. “Did you just… push me out of bed?”

A beat of silence. Then, a deep, sleep-laden voice mumbled, “Wha…?” Cassian shifted, finally realizing something was off. “Where’d you go?”

“I’m on the floor,” you said, your voice half amused, half exasperated. “You shoved me off.”

There was a pause, and then you heard him shift again, this time more alert. “What?” His voice was clearer now, a note of panic creeping in. “You’re on the floor?”

You could almost hear the scramble in his voice as he sat up, wings twitching as he leaned over the side of the bed to find you. His eyes were wide, still groggy but now filled with concern. “*Shit*, I didn’t mean to! Are you okay?” he asked, his voice full of worry as he reached down to help you up.

You took his hand, still a little dazed, but now mostly amused by the whole thing. “I’m fine,” you assured him, though you couldn’t help but laugh softly as you got back onto your feet. “You were hogging the bed.”

Cassian blinked at you, his brow furrowed as he processed what happened. “I pushed you off?” His voice was a mix of guilt and disbelief, and he ran a hand through his messy hair, clearly horrified at himself. “I didn’t even realize—I swear I didn’t mean to—”

You couldn’t help but laugh now, the absurdity of the situation too much to keep a straight face. “Cass, it’s fine,” you said, climbing back into bed beside him. “You’re just too big for your own good. That’s all.”

He looked at you sheepishly, his large hand rubbing the back of his neck as his wings twitched apologetically behind him. “Damn wings,” he muttered, though his lips quirked into a smile as he watched you settle back into the blankets. “I should’ve gotten a bigger bed.”

You snorted, shaking your head. “Bigger than a king-sized bed? I think we’re at the limit.”

Cassian wrapped an arm around you, pulling you close to him, his body warm and solid as he held you. “I’ll make it up to you,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to your temple. “I promise I’ll keep my wings to myself for the rest of the night.”

You snuggled into his embrace, feeling his protective warmth wrap around you like a blanket. “Just don’t shove me off again, and we’ll call it even,” you teased, smiling as you rested your head against his chest.

Cassian chuckled softly, his chest vibrating with the sound. “Deal,” he whispered, his arms tightening around you. “But just in case, I’ll hold onto you a little closer tonight.”

And with that, you drifted back into sleep, safely tucked into his arms, knowing that no matter how big and clumsy he might be, Cassian would always make sure you were safe—even if it took a few accidental tumbles to remind him.

An Australian Army Recruit sends home a letter...

Dear Ma & Pa,

I am well. Hope youse are too. Tell me big brothers Doug and Phil that the Army is better than workin’ on the farm - tell them to get in quick smart before the jobs are all gone! I wuz a bit slow in settling down at first, because ya don’t hafta get outta bed until 6 am. But I like sleeping in now, cuz all ya gotta do before brekky is make ya bed and shine ya boots and clean ya uniform. No cows to milk, no calves to feed, no feed to stack - nothin’!! Ya haz gotta shower though, but its not so bad, coz there’s lotsa hot water and even a light to see what ya doing!

At brekky ya get cereal, fruit and eggs but there’s no kangaroo steaks or possum stew like wot Mum makes. You don’t get fed again until noon and by that time all the city boys are dead because we’ve been on a ’route march’ - geez its only just like walking to the windmill in the back paddock!!

This one will kill me brothers Doug and Phil with laughter. I keep getting medals for shootin’ - dunno why. The bullseye is as big as a possum’s bum and it don’t move and it’s not firing back at ya like the Johnsons did when our big scrubber bull got into their prize cows before the Ekka last year! All ya gotta do is make yourself comfortable and hit the target! You don’t even load your own cartridges, they comes in lil' boxes, and ya don’t have to steady yourself against the rollbar of the roo shooting truck when you reload!

Sometimes ya gotta wrestle with the city boys and I gotta be real careful coz they break easy - it’s not like fighting with Doug and Phil and Jack and Boori and Steve and Muzza all at once like we do at home after the muster.

Turns out I’m not a bad boxer either and it looks like I’m the best the platoon’s got, and I’ve only been beaten by this one bloke from the Engineers - he’s 6 foot 5 and 15 stone and three pick handles across the shoulders and as ya know I’m only 5 foot 7 and eight stone wringin’ wet, but I fought him till the other blokes carried me off to the boozer.

I can’t complain about the Army - tell the boys to get in quick before word gets around how good it is.

Clarksdale, Mississippi is the home of the blues. While you can hear music almost any time of day, any day of the week, you can also see art almost everywhere! Art even finds its way to the street overheads. Visit Clarksdale hosted me during a visit. I learned about the blues musicians connected with this musical town at the Delta Blues Museum. Banana Pancakes

A/N: Inspired by the song Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson

As your eyes flutter open, you can hear the sound of rain falling against the window. You went to cuddle up to your boyfriend, Luigi. But after opening your eyes, you discover he isn’t there. You sigh, getting up to brush your teeth and hair. You figure Luigi is out for a walk because he loves how peaceful walks in the rain are. He likes the smell, the sound, and the fact that he almost certainly won’t see anyone else. After you slip on one of his t-shirts, you can hear a faint humming.

You follow the noise only to discover a sweet aroma as you near the kitchen. After turning the corner to the archway, you find a shirtless Luigi in front of the stove, humming along to his playlist and making banana pancakes. He’s oblivious to your presence. You stand there, taking in the sight.

Tiptoeing over to him, you snake your hands gently around his bare waist, giving him a warm hug and kissing one of his back moles. He lifts his arm up so that you can come around by his side.

“Morning baby,” he says, kissing the top of your head and rubbing your back.

“Why didn’t you wake me up?” you ask him gently, looking up at him with your arms still wrapped around his waist.

“You needed the extra rest. You looked so pretty and so peaceful. I just couldn’t. And I wanted to make you some breakfast,” he looks down at you with a big grin.

“You’re forgiven.” you say with a smile, standing on your toes to give him a peck.

You press some fresh orange juice for the two of you to enjoy, which you finish just in time for the pancakes to be ready. The whole scene of making breakfast with the love of your life, humming to music, kissing and touching as often as you can - it makes you feel so safe.

You eat your breakfast with relaxing music in the background, content in knowing you don’t need to do anything at all today. Your breakfast is spent playing footsies, exchanging loving glances, and scattering sweet nothings in your conversations. 

You spend the rest of the day in your living room cuddled up on the couch in front of the fireplace, both you and Luigi with your own stack of books to get through. You give one another updates on your books periodically, occasionally getting distracted with makeout sessions.

Lois Lane has a cut out clip of Vicki Vale. Vicki Vale is a journalist in Gotham City. Her first appearance was in Batman #49 (1948) as seen in the panel here (W: Bill Finger, A: Lew Sayre and Bob Kane, I: Charles Paris, L: Ira Schnapp).

Looks like Jimmy is a fan of Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask. Good video game taste.

Jimmy mentions a psychic starfish and the one starfish in the DC universe who is psychic is Starro the Conqueror, who's first appearance is in Brave and the Bold 28 (1960) (the cover art here is done by Mike Sekowsky, Murphy Anderson, and Ira Schnapp) and has the power to mind control people.

Lois, after barging into Perry White's office about a story, mentions Mt. Simonson. This is a neat name drop to Superman: The Man of Steel writer Louise Simonson, one of the nicest comic book writers you'll ever meet. She helped co-create John Henry Irons a.k.a Steel with artist of the Superman: The Man of Steel comic, Jon Bogdanove (really hope we get to see Irons in this show too).

Jon Bogdanove also gets a name drop here as does...

Dan Jurgen, comic book writer and artist on the Superman comic in the 90s (also one of my favorite Superman artists).

Now who are these kids that call themselves the Newskid Legion? Well, they are a VERY deep DC cut and reference to the Newsboy Legion back in the 1940s. The group was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, LEGENDARY comic book creators.

Patty, the cartoonist of the Newskid Legion homages this panel from Adventures of Superman #500 (1993) (W: Karl Kesel, P: Tom Grummet, I: Doug Hazelwood, C: Glenn Whitmore, L: Albert DeGuzman), the first appearance of Superboy, Conner Kent/ Kon-El.

But who is the one below that drawing? We'll his name is in Big Word's word puzzle, in the show. It's Jim Harper, the Guardian.

Jim Harper becomes the Newsboy Legion's legal guardian despite their causing trouble for him. The page here is from Star Spangled Comics #7, the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian's first appearance, by Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, and Whitney Ellsworth. You might've seen the Guardian on the recent Young Justice cartoon.

When Lois, Clark, and Jimmy go investigate about the smuggled robots in Metropolis, Jimmy makes a reference to super intelligent gorillas in France. This is a subtle hint at Monsieur Mallah, the Doom Patrol villain who will be in the show along with his partner, the Brain. Both made their first appearance in Doom Patrol #86 (1964) .

The cover art here is done by Arnold Drake, Bob Brown, and Ira Schnapp.

Later in the episode we see Clark receive his powers and he is surrounded with electricity, giving off Superman Blue vibes when in the comics, Superman gained electricity powers and became Electric Blue Superman who's first appearance was in Superman #123 (1997) (cover art by Dan Jurgens, Joe Rubenstein, Patrick Martin, and Todd Klein.

With this tournament formatted how it is, it is only possible for 1 person to have 155 victories and 1 person to have 155 losses. There are currently only 20 names that have a perfect record of wins and 29 names with a perfect record of losses.
