I could have strong opinions but that's usually not enough to attract witchcraft charges on its own unless the community is REALLY in a mess. I might even be an unpopular MAN who someone has an interpersonal squabble with, although statistically I am more likely to be a woman (unlike in Scandinavia, where the reverse is true)

very interesting to me how mac's obsession with religion does not seem to be present in his parents also... with luther being in jail + mrs mac being uninterested in whatever mac does, i doubt that he was raised in a typical strict catholic household. if anything, his parents' absence probably contributed largely to him turning to the church. the promise of god's love, in exchange for being 'good', was how mac coped with his loneliness. praying gave him a form of companionship that he never had. consequently, he placed those strict catholic rules on himself, so to never feel alone again.

i was joking about something to my mom when she was here recently and i quoted Jesus' "i bring you not peace, but a sword" and she sort of scoffed politely and said something to the effect of "jesus did not fucking say that" and i was like mom (who was raised catholic and made to go to a lot more church stuff as a kid) it's literally in Matthew. not even one of the gnostic gospels for real jesus freaks, but just right there in the headliners lmao. they cut "lift a rock and you will find me/split a piece of wood and i am there" but not the sword, despite "lift a rock" really sounding a lot more like Jesus, because the second one (gnostic gospel of thomas) is blatantly an anti-church message. the only reason i even know about the sword quote and remember it is because it's part of the list of Weird Things Jesus Said/Did in Part II of the Cartoon History of the Universe (i mean it's not that weird, he just meant that struggles between believers and nonbelievers would inevitably cause strife following his recognition as the messiah, but it SOUNDS very badass)

very striking that Hugo pulls back in lm 1.5.11 after several chapters of absolute brutality toward Fantine and wraps her up in the language of the divine. the chapter is titled Christus Nos Liberavit/Christ has freed us - it begins with talk of the "sacred law of Jesus" & ends with the word "God." Fantine's suffering and resignation here is seen not by the Church itself (no priests! no bishops! no candlesticks or sacraments!) but by God himself alone.

very much a chapter-length version of the parable: "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the misérables least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me."

so bc of Robert being back on Emmerdale I've been looking back on their storyline some and oh my god it was mad wasn't it, like Robert literally killed Katie to stop anyone from finding out, and then later tried to kill both Aaron and Paddy, and somehow they like got past all that lmao, all to say, what would complete this current Sugden family madness, revival of Robron, would be the return of Andy, please I need him, perfect farmboy Andy Sugden my beloved I need you back to complete the trifecta of Sugden brothers (I know it won't happen but I can dream)
