thinking about how charlie and frank have each other and dennis and mac have each other and dee has never really had anyone :( how dennis is her brother but he laughed the first time he saw her in a backbrace and how frank was her father but never came to see her in the school play and how mac has always looked at her with such resentment for a reason she can’t understand and how charlie was always kinder than the other boys but would still pick one of them over her in a heartbeat. and the loneliness of growing up in a house that’s too big for you even though your twin brother is just down the hall and sitting at lunch tables with empty seats and crying alone in your room on prom night even though you'd been so excited to go and having to beg for your friends to give you valentines and smoking in alleyways because you're terrified you'll end up with parkinson's disease without anybody to care of you, oh dee reynolds i am so sorry for everything

in my head tiny dee has a barbie dreamhouse with a barbie and a ken who are happily married and never fight, ever, and she lets dennis play with her sometimes even though he gets all the voices wrong and doesn’t like when dee makes barbie and ken have a daughter instead of a son. and in middle school dennis gets t-shirts he doesn't like for christmas from a relative who can barely remember the twins' names, and he gives them to dee who looks much better in green than he does and she walks up and down the hallway feeling quite cool, even though barbara berates dee for acting unladylike.

and charlie is in third grade struggling to tie his shoelaces and mac walks to charlie's house extra early every morning to help him with them, even though his fingers are clumsy and they take a while. and charlie gifts mac one of his action figures when mac doesn't get anything for his birthday, even though it's a little broken and he's chewed on one of the arms and it's his favourite figure, because mac always plays with him anyway and charlie has loads more toys.

the way charlie goes from looking terrified when they first sit him down to smiling as he's reading books to the kids :(( how he was so defensive about his reading abilities but begins to feel comfortable with asking barbara for help when he needs it :(((

the gang chokes is basically a repeat of mac and dennis break up just a decade later, except in some ways it's sadder because dennis has grown to resent mac for being dependent while he also resents himself for being exactly the same. and you can see it, when he snips at mac, "i'm feeling better, ... no thanks to you", and then moments later insists he wants to drink another of mac's shakes because "i feel like the shakes are finally kicking in and that's why i'm feeling a little bit better". and he claims that he hates mac and maybe it's true a little bit but he has also latched onto mac like a parasite and resigned them both to living in this misery forever.

and mac's better at acting like it's all okay, because it's been 10 years and dennis still needs mac to rub his calves and tape his ankles and carry him all the way home. and mac likes to feel useful, he's always liked to feel useful, and if this is what he needs to do to be useful then he's decided that that's fine! and dennis will tear him down and mac will retaliate in his own way with poisoned shakes and pollen in the air and they'll survive one another, because that's what they've learned to do.
