The place would surely make one yearn for restful rustication, if not for underlying apprehension that naturally comes with being at the mercy of Daedric Lords. The Netherworld, you know, contains no place where one'd be safe from being brutalized by Daedra—for demons prowl domains of Good Princes just as much as that of Evil ones. Yet here, Daedra conduct themselves in a strictly civil fashion, compelled thus by decree of their Lord—Clavicus Vile. I have an anecdote attesting to ubiquity of this custom, for once on the road to town of Caprice I met a savage Herne who bespoke me in a somewhat sheepish fashion—asking whether I'd be gracious enough to "permit it to murder me". Upon hearing my refusal the creature, though visibly disappointed, was otherwise content to leave me be. One however would be advised not to mistake this propriety for genuine goodwill. I myself have learned this through ordeal after my endeavor to take a swim (in a lake behind Caprice) solicited no word of caution from gawkers present, whereupon I was attacked by a pair of carnivorous plesiosauri. Later I learned that in Oblivion, bodies of water are often of abyssal depth and house many such creatures...

CONCORDIA SALUS, “PROJECT EDEN” FACILITY

UNDISCLOSED LOCATION

     The rain fell hard enough to sting, cold and biting, with no promises to relent as the convoy swayed and lumbered through the winding mountain road taking them deep into the fragrant heart of the conifer forest that blanketed the slopes almost near to the peak. Alexander had ceased to look out of his heavily tinted window hours ago, resigned that he would see nothing that would give him a clue as to where he was and where he was headed, and confident that even if he could see that he had no knowledge on how to designate his location from nature alone.

So, he’d been content to idly scroll his phone, chewing on a wad of gum that had long since lost its sweetness, and gritting his teeth in annoyance as his phone signal flickered out, leaving him to idly switch between applications, seeking something to keep his attention while his mind fair buzzed with possibilities. Around the same time, his battery flashed a warning. He’d need to charge it soon but with no service this high up in heavens-knew-where, he didn’t see the point and instead tried to find some other way to focus his unquiet mind.

     Six months ago, Alexander had been brewing his morning coffee in his cramped kitchen when he’d seen the sleek, black sedans pull up, windows tinted far beyond what he knew to be the legal limit, and sporting government plates. At first, he thought it was a hallucination; maybe they weren’t here for him, maybe the neighbors had done something. As if on cue, the doors opened and several individuals in bespoke suits were marching up the walkway to darken his front porch. Alexander had kept stirring his coffee while the doorbell wheezed, stuttering out its alert before fizzling to static. It was only when the knocking began that Alexander shuffled into motion, setting his coffee on the counter to answer the front door. He did his best to look calm but only slightly surprised and hoped his mouth could shape a friendly smile before these official-looking agents caught on and he was found guilty of whatever crime they no doubt suspected he committed.

     As it turned out, those bespoke-suited agents were just the vanguard for the real power behind the tinted window: Helena Grinspoon, the CEO of Concordia Salus, a research company that specialized in a wide array of studies—including a hefty hand in the pot of pharmaceuticals—and had built its empire on providing research technology of the bleeding edge variety. Alexander had been relieved that it had not been the FBI or Homeland Security on his doorstep, but no less flustered that he’d been scouted by such a powerful company.

     He hadn’t minded letting his coffee get cold over that encounter.

     Now, months later, he was finally to embark on the mysterious offer and contract with the company. The meeting with Helena had been done entirely via phone, while he sat in the back of a Phantom, enjoying chilled champagne and strawberries fresh on ice. She hadn’t given him any specific details, only that the discovery Concordia Salus made in their never-ending quest for knowledge was likely the most important in human history. Alexander had been polite enough not to scoff at such a claim and had instead let Helena explain what his role would be.

     Tonight, as the convoy rumbled to a stop before a high gate manned by armed guards sporting night vision goggles, Alexander would finally know what warranted a non-disclosure agreement. The financial incentive had been enough to make him choke on a chilled strawberry, forfeiting his advantage of looking only mildly interested. There had been enough zeroes to wipe out his student debt by a significant amount.

     One of the guards spoke to the driver in the car ahead of him, and with a single hand signal, the gate slid open. The convoy pushed ahead into the facility. Much like he had with much of the ride, Alexander did not bother trying to make out much of the campus and instead sighed with relief and anticipation that he would finally be able to see what had merited a meeting with Helena Grinspoon herself.

     The convoy parked in the hangar-sized loading area, and Alexander found himself suddenly assaulted by garish light as his door was opened and he stepped out. The air had the acrid scent of chemically treated wood and new concrete. It was as if the facility were some sanitized bubble nestled in the heart of the natural world. He couldn’t even smell the rain.

     “Dr. Rickman, I’m glad to finally see you here face to face,” a rich voice, enough to send a prickle along the nape of his neck. He turned to stare into the flinty blue eyes of the most unnerving looking woman he’d seen by far, her mouth quirked in a smile that was somehow hard and brittle, as if it were a foreign notion to her.

     “Come,” she said, “I’m sure you have questions, and there’s much to explain.”

     Alexander followed, kept at arm’s length behind her by the hard-looking bodyguards hovering on either side of her. He adjusted his bag, taking note of the fact that they were actually in a hangar bay, but he saw no vehicles that flew.

     “Concordia Salus has spent a lot of time and money investing in this facility,” Helena said as they entered an elevator, “but I believe you’ll find the reasons why make it all worthwhile.” She turned just so, glancing at him with idle curiosity. The smile was gone from her mouth, leaving only the steel of a powerful woman in its wake.

     “How much do you know about what we do, Doctor?”

     Alexander pushed forward, rushing to catch up with Helena’s brisk gait. Somehow, he felt he did not belong here, amidst armed guards and a sharply dressed businesswoman. He went over his list of qualities and skills, trying to understand what Concordia Salus—a company that specialized mostly in robotics—would need with a paleoanthropologist. He blinked, adjusting his glasses.

     “I know you’re foremost in robotics research; you took the danger out of exploring the ocean when yo—” Alexander realized that the place had gone eerily silent. Helena’s cold and pitiless gaze twinkled with what might have been amusement, but he felt more like he was being sized up by a praying mantis more than anything.

     “I’m aware of what our website says, Dr. Rickman,” she said with a raised brow, then turned on her heel to keep walking. She led him through a series of corridors, until he wasn’t sure just how deep into the facility they’d gone. The airy noise of the hangar wasn’t even a distant hum at this juncture. Helena came to another elevator, this one biometrically locked. He watched Helena stand in front of a clear panel, saw the flicker of blue lasers over her face before they flashed green, and the elevator doors opened. As they piled into the lift, the doors closed and suddenly Alexander was aware that the silence of before had been nothing compared to this.

     “A lot of security for a scientific research facility,” he said with a stuttering chuckle. No one else joined him. “Expecting your competitors to storm the gates to rob you of...whatever it is you’re researching?”

     “Yes.” Helena said, her voice like cool water, her expression neutral. “Not only do I expect my competitors to come for what I have, I expect them to do so with all the resources at their disposal. There is a reason our background check on you was so extensive, Dr. Rickman. Believe me, I’d never have brought you within 600 kilometers of this place if I suspected treachery.”

     Alexander smiled. Helena did not. Again, he found it difficult to hold her gaze in its unnerving intensity.

     “VOICE IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED FOR TRANSPORT.” A robotic voice chimed over the speakers. For a moment, Alexander thought that one of the guards had spoken, but he glanced around. The inside of the lift was pristine and stainless steel, and whatever sound system was being used, was as crisp and clear as if it were live.

     “War is the province of man,” Helena said in clear tones, and then turned her gaze to Alexander, smirking almost conspiratorially, “and survival the province of women.”

     “ACCESS GRANTED: WELCOME, HELENA GRINSPOON,” the AI responded politely, and Alexander felt a slight lurch as the elevator slid into motion. They were going down from the feel of it, and quickly. He hadn’t caught a glimpse of the facility from the outside, but he understood now that it had to be massive, carved deep into the heart of the mountain like some modern fortress. The lift coasted downward at an even glide for some time before slowing.

     “Most of our research is done in our urban headquarters around the world,” Helena explained, “pharmaceuticals, mostly, and some of our more paper-heavy genetic research. But we save the more exciting research for isolated sites like this one. Mostly due to safety, but always for security.” The doors slid open smoothly and Helena continued the tour down a bright and pristine hallway. Alexander swallowed.

     “So, I guess I can ask why you’d need someone in my field for your super isolated clandestine research,” he said wryly, “unless you need a dead language translated or a history of prehistoric man, then…”

     Helena gave one of her cold and amused smiles.

     “As it so happens, you are exactly who I am looking for,” she said and led him to what he hoped was the final door of the journey. “What you know of mankind before its recorded history is quite vital to the outcome of this project.” At that, Alexander began to feel he was either being set up or he had not read the terms and conditions of all his paperwork clearly. Helena seemed genuinely amused, the corner of her mouth lifting up in a smirk that could almost have been a sneer if her face didn’t look like it was meticulously sculpted to never wrinkle. Alexander got the feeling he was not as important as Helena said he was, and that any misstep would force her to prove that. So, he nodded.

     “I’m honored,” he said softly, “but Ms. Grinspoon, you’ve got to throw me a line here. What is this project you keep hinting at? Why the armed fortress?” He hadn’t meant to sound so frantic, like a confused child with no understanding of the how and why of things, only the demand to know. Helena’s expression never changed, and she seemed content to wait out his burgeoning apprehension before she inclined her head with a subtle tilt of her chin. Alexander sucked in a startled breath as her personal guards dismissed themselves. Behind the door, answers waited, but Alexander waited for Helena to react.

     “Are you familiar with the Genesis myth?” She asked. Alexander nodded wordlessly, restraining the urge to expound upon just how much of it he’d studied in relation to his own research over the years. Helena placed her hand on the door.

     “Behind this door, Dr. Rickman is proof that this myth is real.”

     That got Alexander’s interest, and he watched as Helena stood in front of the small screen, saw the flicker of a laser as she endured a brief retinal scan, and then there was a hiss, and the heavy armored doors began to part like a vault.

     And a vault it was, for what Alexander saw was etched forever in his memory after that day.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launches April 24 - Gematsu

Turn-based RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store on April 24, publisher Kepler Interactive and developer Sandfall Interactive announced. Pre-orders are now available. It will also be available via Game Pass.

In today’s presentation, Sandfall Interactive shared details about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s development origins, plus several new gameplay features sure to intrigue fans looking forward to the game’s upcoming release. Filmed on location at Sandfall Interactive’s studio in Montpellier, France, several members of the development team shared more detail on the game’s emotional story, stunning art direction inspired by Belle Epoque France, and its innovative reactive turn-based combat gameplay, which infuses traditional RPG mechanics with real-time defensive and offensive abilities. Additionally, the team revealed brand-new characters players will encounter during their adventure: the friendly, yet bloodthirsty, Monoco (voiced by Rich Keeble) and the larger-than-life Esquie (voiced by Maxence Cazorla). Monoco the Gestral joins the Expedition as a fully playable character, bringing his own unique playstyle to battles by transforming himself into the enemies the party encounters and using their abilities against them, while Esquie is an altogether more unusual character that players will befriend and use to discover the game’s explorable world. Throughout the game, players will unlock more abilities with Esquie, letting the Expedition climb aboard and traverse, swim, and soar across the game’s newly revealed overworld map. Reminiscent of classic RPGs that inspired Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s turn-based gameplay, the world map gives players freedom to explore various new locations and secrets on their path to destroy the Paintress. Outside of rich level-based environments like Ancient Sanctuary and the Gestral Village, the overworld has unique discoverable caves and bespoke locations hosting challenging optional battles and side quests, providing extensive opportunities for players to test their mettle and master the game’s deep and rewarding character building mechanics. Players will also be able to set up camp on the overworld, taking time to reinforce their character weapons and builds, listen to the game’s stunning original score via an in-game record player, and have conversations with their teammates to learn more about their stories and motivations on their path to destroy the Paintress. 1. What’s your OC’s gender identity? What’s their relationship to their gender?

I made a post [here] <- forever ago on this topic!! So I am very glad to revisit it <3 

Rin and Fiona are both cis. 

Neither of them conform to their general societal roles. 

On Rin’s side, she grew into masculinity. As a child, she’d never really preferred tomboy over girly-girl. If anything, she was a typical girl’s girl through and through: dresses, pinks, skirts etc. But as she grew older, Rin drifted away from all of that and found more comfort in masculine attire. Importantly, it was not part of her femininity. When she wears her binder and packer, it is explicitly to dress masculine and be seen as masc. Still, for Rin, none of this makes her any less of a woman. As masculine as she present, she still sees herself as a woman through and through. <- It’s really never occurred to her Not be a woman –she just is. 

Fiona, on the other side, has always felt constrained by what he was ‘allowed’ to do. His childhood is a lot of suffering under these expectations to be stoic, purely logical, and aggressive. And he wanted to wear the skirts and dresses and heels without being seen as less of a man. As a result, when Fiona wears typically feminine things, it’s not an expression of femininity for him. Wearing makeup and a cute skirt, for Fiona, feels no more feminine than wearing a bespoke three piece suit. It’s just another avenue for him to express his masculinity as a man. He's played around with different genders, testing them out before ultimately realizing he's cis.

6. How does your OC feel about labels? Theirs, or in general? 

Oh!! Love this one for Jiahao + Rams! 

Surprisingly, Jiahao is less concerned about labels than Rams is. The difference comes down to their experience finding one. 

When Jiahao started digging into her gender identity (<- i’m focusing on gender here cuz I’m still a little fuzzy on his sexual/romantic orientation rn), it took her forever to stumble on ‘bigender’. He went through so many labels that all kinda fit but weren’t right. Like, for a while, he called himself genderfluid which explained the feeling of multiple genders but not that he felt like a girl and boy simultaneously. <- At the time, it was just the best she knew. 

Because of that, her best experiences with her gender came from when she wasn’t trying to fit into a label –you know, just being herself without untangling all the complexities of anything. Being unlabeled was very much a source of joy while Jia was still figuring himself out and that extends till now! Right now, she’s very content with using bigender and very much loves it but she doesn’t have to. It’s given her a pretty broad view of labels which is helpful for explaining things but may not cover the entirety of a person’s understanding of their themselves. 

For Rams, xe found xeir label pretty quickly. Part of that is: xe jumped into research very deeply so xe was actively looking for information rather than Jia who was learning as she goes. Other part is: Rams is really sex averse. It really makes xim cringe, imagining ximself with someone else/having sex in general. <- It was easier for Rams to realize co was asexual because it’s so prominent for xim

On the other hand, Rams’ agenderness was a lot more subtle. Xe felt generally awkward with gendered terms but mistook it as social awkwardness rather than a symptom of, you know, not having a gender. So when co found out about agender, so many things just like clicked into place. Reframed in a way that really made sense, you know? 

Because of those two experiences, Rams really likes having labels for different experiences. Labels help cos personally contextualize all co’s experiences. Labels give everything a name and lets co know that, no, co ain’t alone –there are other people who go through the same thing co is! <- It’s comforting. 

17. Do you share identity with any of your ocs? Which ones?

Yep! Jiahao! We’re both boy-girl bigender babes <3 I have a different gender expression from her but same identity :D

I will take this chance to ramble about: Gabe Ricci. <- my Gabe Ricci. Because I have Thoughts and I don’t talk about my MC’s LI’s very often 😭 

So, not sure if y’all know but my Gabe is trans. (<- im half-sure ive mentioned it before maybe) My dude’s a panda bear. I headcannon that he started on testosterone a little after getting his law degree, specifically around the time he became a public defender. Which was not The Best time for him. It wasn’t easy and probably contributed to his burnout.  

But hot damn, if his confidence didn’t drastically improve after a couple months on T! And it didn’t stop. The more Gabe’s body started to out look like his body the more his confidence grew. 

Timeskip after joining McGraw Byrne, Gabe picks up gym as a stress hobby. He’s so freaking strong for no good reason. The man’s a lawyer so why could he absolutely bench three times Fiona’s weight with ease??? (<- yes, Fiona does get princess carried from time to time) 

Best part? The man’s got fat! Look, my Gabe’s is forty. He is 40. His hair’s greying (<- though he dies it x:) And works a mostly desk job. He’s got the stomach rolls to prove it. And when he picks up gym??? You know what happens?? <- he gains some muscle!! He’s chub and muscle, it’s literally amazing?? And very much transition goals for Gabe. (<- know that he flexes in the mirror). It’s literally so great and–

Do you see this bespoke banner? The title "Sonic Sunday" is by @ivelovedhimthroughworse and while I was looking that up, I realised staff flagged this entire blog as mature content. I literally complain all the time about how I do not know what sexy times are and yet...

Anyway, Tumblr fuckery aside, I claimed a fic for the Caught on Tape Podfic fest. It was a brash decision, because I have zero (0) experiences with the podfic world. I've uhhh never even listened to one so feel free to send recommendations. The things is that, to this day, I still read English text out loud. That's partially how I learnt English. And then I always give characters voices etc. so I thought: "Why not try this?" and also the mods said the fest was open for everyone. I was a bit worried, since I don't own a microphone or anything, but it's all in good fun. I did contribute, like, 5 lines to the Dalton Audiobook, but that's it. (And my chapters haven't been posted yet.) But the list of fics of this fest is absolutely phenomenal and I even had to stop myself from claiming multiple and I told myself to keep it around 1K fics, but damn. I already looked up how to pronounce Telemachus, but how the shit do you pronounce Swithin???

So I decided to try to podfic my own fics, just as some sort of equipment test. I only have a phone, after all. I originally wanted to try my hand at My rose-coloured boy, since that's my shortest CO fic, but again, this is a try out, so I picked my shortest fic on AO3, which happens to be my Klaine fic called The Moon fic, with a whopping 49 words. Behold, The Moon fic:

You'd think that a 16 second podfic would be a fucking cakewalk but I am at my parents' house and I recorded this in secret to avoid telling them that I was reading a fic about fictional homosexuals on the moon so I didn't have a second screen aka I did this whole 49 words fic from memory and even though it's literally only 49 words, I did 10 takes cause I kept messing up the text. I guess I will also have to learn how to edit and shit, since the fic I claimed is just over 1K.

Anyway, don't care too much about the quality of me reading out loud. That's not what this test was for. But how does it sound? I did read some tips in the Discord about maybe recording underneath a blanket or in a closet, so I might redo it from there just to see how it looks.

2. What is the most important thing you learned from writing?

That writing is an incredible method of expression and outlet! It's something I can do no matter the mood I am in (with the exception of when I've got writer's block) and feel all the more better for it.

Also that it has taught me that if I am not happy with something, I don't have to persevere and hope things work out. Sometimes it's for the better starting afresh, though do keep hold of what you've done! My current main draft of The Perfect Storm is most certainly not the first, but I've used parts from that first draft when I've realised it had a place to fit in my current one! It's something I've been able to apply in places like work too!

4. If you could go back in time and give your beginner writer self one piece of advice, what would it be?

I would probably tell little 12 year old me to keep going, and that if she ever feels cringe over her old writing that is fine! Don't delete or get rid of it, keep hold of it! It shows growth and just how far you've gone! There's been many times where I have wanted to look back at what I wrote ten or more years ago when I've been feeling in the dumps about my writing currently, but haven't been able to because I deleted it because I deemed it cringey.

I do have access to one of my old AO3 accounts, the one which came before Umbracirrus, but that one is still very new in the scheme of things (2019/2020ish)... There's a lot of Fire Emblem Three Houses on there. I even started a DAI fic on there that I quickly lost heart on too. I have a few older Fire Emblem Fates fics saved on my onedrive too, not sure if the AO3 account they were posted on is still up... Might be. But I wish I had more that pre-dated me being 16/17 or so. That's like 5 years of writing development lost to the void...

5. What’s the writing accomplishment you’re most proud of?

That I've kept writing, honestly! The fact that I'm still working on The Perfect Storm over a year after posting the first chapter has to be the biggest part of my pride 😊

18. What is something about your writing which brings you joy?

That I get content to do with my favourite characters, and that content is bespoke :3

Set 4

1. The song that describes you Durge best from your own perspective?

I Want To Live is more Astarion-coded than anything else, but honestly, it works great for a resist!Durge too (and it's a duet, and he's romancing Astarion so it can work for both of them simultaneously!) "There's more to do if we can only live"…

2. OK and now the song that your Durge would actually sing along to because they like it?

Probably something upbeat and bouncy? Pre-tadpole, it'd be the kind of… 'extreme violence set to cheerful/energetic music' vibe. Post-tadpole, it's a lot more genuine and optimistic, haha.

3. What was your Durge's dream before everything happened? What did they want to become? Did they want to stay with their family or did they strive to go adventuring?

Tavias is a people pleaser, deeply insecure, and needs to be needed and wanted, and Father Comes Before All, so his dream was honestly 'do whatever Bhaal wants of me'. It was the impetus for him originally pushing away his fairly justifiable horror at the Temple and cult, knowing that if he did well enough, maybe his true father would return and like him, and it continued to motivate him up until Orin's attack. His dream would have been to carry out Bhaal's plan of omnicide, although he did have a secret quiet desire that Gortash would be by his side the whole time, and that Gortash would be the very last life he took before his own.

If we're talking before he killed his foster parents, honestly, his main desire was to find somewhere where he belonged.

4. Did your Durge ever fulfill that dream or did the temple and cult get in the way? Did they simply discard it? Why?

I mean. In a way XD He assumed he had fulfilled his dream by finding the Temple, his ~true~ family. He actually does end up finding a place where he belongs post-tadpole, though - with Astarion, with Halsin, with Jaheira. With people who love him for himself, not his heritage ;_;

5. What does Durge think of family? Describe it with one word.

Messy.

6. Sarevok, what was his relationship with your Durge like? Did they like each other? Was it complicated?

They goddamn loathed each other. From Sarevok's perspective, when Tavias first comes to the Temple in 1472, there are only a few remaining Bhaalspawn - himself and Orin, Abdel, who famously disavowed Bhaal, and Veikang, who's been keeping quiet for all these years. Sarevok sees himself as the head of the Cult of Bhaal, and Orin as his heir (having already pit her against Helena two years earlier, and Orin being the survivor). Now there's this child, an outsider who knows nothing of the cult's ways, who's being positioned as the new leader - and worse, he's far more 'pure' than even Sarevok is, than even Orin, his bespoke Bhaalspawn grand/daughter, is. It was instant resentment.

On Tavias' part, he initially did want Sarevok to like him. Sarevok was kin. His older half-brother. He had always wanted older siblings, and now here was one who knew all about the strange place he had found himself in, only for Sarevok to dislike him? Very crushing. His disgust and dislike started growing as Sarevok made no secret (behind closed doors, of course, had to present themselves as a happy family to the cult!) of his own dislike, and definitely amped up as he learned about Orin's parentage - and Sarevok's plans to create an even more pure Bhaalspawn. Tavias was, at least, treated as a boy from the moment he arrived, but Sarevok was well aware that Tavias had the right anatomy to get pregnant, and pretty much… would try to convince him that the two of them would create the Ultimate Bhaalspawn.

Tavias was 16-17 at this point, more or less leading the cult on a daily basis after his successful murder spree, and, uh, had got very well-accustomed to using violence to solve all his problems. He told Sarevok that if he ever laid a hand on him (or the then-14-15-year-old Orin), Tavias would get revenge so violent and gory that even Bhaal would go, "Hmm, that may be a bit much", and more or less banished Sarevok just to running the Tribunal instead of the entire cult. By 1492, he thinks Sarevok is both washed-up and a disgusting old pervert who would be better off dead, and frankly, he's all too happy to kill his big brother when he finally returns.

7. Does your Durge know of Sarevok's past? What do they think about it?

He learns the 'official' version pretty early on, and all the messy details a few years in. It doesn't do much to improve his view on him, just reinforces the fact that he failed. In 1482, after Abdel and Veikang die and Bhaal returns, Tavias uses the fact that Sarevok's death wasn't required as evidence that his earlier resurrection around the time of the Crisis removed any essence of Bhaal from him; he was no longer relevant. It was just Tavias, and, less importantly, Orin (being only part Bhaalspawn), who would represent Bhaal in the future. Tavias was pureblooded, Tavias was the Slayer, Tavias had the Urge, Tavias was Chosen. Sarevok? He was yesterday's news.

8. Education in the Temple, what did it look like? Did they enjoy it?

Yeah, more or less! He had essentially four streams of education - a general education that any kid in Baldur's Gate would get, because Bhaal's heir would not be an uneducated hick. He was given Bhaal-specific education, about the history of the cult, of Bhaal, of the earlier crisis, and of other things relating to the gods. Technically, should Tavias had wished, he could have 100% qualified as a Cleric of Bhaal instead of a sorcerer. As it was, though, he was a sorcerer, and so learning to use his arcane abilities was the third stream; finally, he (and everyone else in the Temple) was given combat training, with a special focus on assassination and, uh, vivisection. He enjoyed it for the most part, although he's still not a fan of literature studies.

9. Did your Durge ever attend a gathering of High Society with Gortash? Did they fit in, did they charm their way into the upper echelon's heart or were they despised?

Oh yes, and he loved it. Tavias knew how to turn up the charm, even if he came across as… kind of disconcerting; on the other hand, the upper echelon was fairly used to 'disconcerting'. Lots of dirty secrets going around! But yes, he did take a lot of enjoyment in dressing up as the most beautiful person in the room and charming the pants off everyone. And if the occasional back-room murder happened, even better! :D

10. Ketheric Thorm's dream, reviving the dead. What did Durge think of it? Did they consider it a sacrilege as Ketheric wanted to reverse the death Durge so loved to sow, or could they understand the desire of wanting to reclaim a loved one?

He could vaguely understand it in abstract terms, but did not relate. By the time he met Ketheric, he had well and truly pushed aside any sentimentality, had been drinking the Bhaalist Kool-Aid for nearly two decades, and there was no one he thought would be better off alive than dead. His goal at this point was to murder the world, after all, and he genuinely believed the world would be better that way. The timeline is a little unclear on whether Isobel was resurrected before Tavias was attacked or not, but he definitely knew that the desire to bring her back was why Ketheric had turned to Myrkul, and also thought it was a stupid idea and a sign that Ketheric was a weak link in their plans.

Set 5

1. The Gate has more than just one cult dedicated to an evil aligned Deity. What does your Durge think about the Sharran Outpost establishing itself within their turf? Were there any sort of run-ins that escalated?

Honestly he just kind of takes it as a given that there are other cults and the like around the city, and the Sharrans aren't too close to the Temple. He doesn't like Sharrans - removing someone's memories when they could, say, be twisted and put towards murder instead seems like such a waste! - but he tolerates their presence (and, of course, they'll stay out of the Undercity if they know what's good for them :) ). For run-ins, I feel they would probably try to stay out of each other's ways, for the most part.

2. How did your Durge feel seeing the bodies of their brethren being ogled by the general populous in the Hall of Wonders? Disgust, pride, nothing?

A bit of disgust, if only because they're not being presented right, dammit. Museums set up a narrative with their exhibitions, whether intentionally or otherwise. Oh, some definitely try to be impartial, but every museum is going to go, okay, what story are we telling here? And they tell a story of Bhaalists as losers, Bhaalists as failures, Bhaalists as irrelevant, and - no. Bhaalists are very much on the rise again, thank you very much, and those bodies and relics should be displayed with care and pride, not as, "Look at this sad figure!"

3. Nine Fingers has dedicated herself to keeping peace between the warring underworld factions no matter the cost. What price did the Bhaalists require under Durge's leadership?

More or less the same as the Sharrans - try to stay out of each other's way. The Cult are more powerful and are backed by an actual deity (well, quasi-deity), but the Guild are far more numerous, and have their fingers - pun unintended - in far more pies. In a one-on-one conflict, a Bhaalist would win, but en masse, the Guild and their allies could probably do a fair bit of damage to the Temple. So they try and keep things… more or less chill. There's probably a bit of collaboration - if a Bhaalist needs some pressure put on someone in a more 'diplomatic' way than Bhaal would approve of, or if a Guild member needs someone disposed of but without the Guild itself being implicated, they could scratch each other's backs.

4. Speaking of Nine Fingers, what was your Durge's relationship with her like? Was it amicable or did they regularly come for each other's throat?

Yeah, amicable. Keene is a bit older than Tavias, and was a little surprised when he started openly leading the Cult when he was only in his teens, but hell, she was already doing Crimes at his age. So long as he's competent, no issue there.

5. The Zhent may follow Bane, but what did the Bhaalist leader think of them and their operations?

Useful at times. Pretty widespread, good contacts for smuggling in particular. He would let them use cult safehouses as drop spaces at times in exchange for a cut.

6. Mercenaries are a valued resource even for death cults and almost any significant operation in Faerûn. Did Durge ever hire any, and if so, what for?

Oh yeah, and similar to the kind of collaborations done with the Guild or Zhentarim. Sometimes, they'd identify a promising new member, send them on a test mission, and if they passed, they received an offer to join the cult. ('No' was not actually accepted. Nope. In his childhood, he'd just use whatever his current foster family used, and after going to the Temple, it kind of… wasn't necessary. "Tavias who?" "…Tavias the HEIR OF MURDER??"

Ooh man haven't thought about it before but the Bhaal skull with added in dragon horns would be cool as hell.

Oh yes. Sarevok most likely had at least a few commissioned of the kids as they were growing up, and Tavias himself definitely had one commissioned in full regalia after Bhaal's return and being officially named Chosen.

Set 6

1. Durge flayed themselves at least once, why?

Sex, probably. Maybe as a pentinence thing? I feel he was quite willing to try Abdirak's methods because he was used to pain for pentinence and it just sort of… resonated. Alternatively, another way of communing with Bhaal? Taking himself to the brink of death or something.

2. What did they think when they wrote the Prayer down? Why was it so important for them to have a physical copy of it?

Kind of… a desperate attempt to get all his thoughts about Gortash out of his head, he'll do what he's told, he's a good boy, he really is. (It was a massive bit of downplay, saying he 'admired' Gortash. Tavias was in love with him, and if Gortash had asked if they could scrap their plans and leave their masters and make their own story, he would have been tempted.) He never ended up 'officially'. Uh. Submitting it? Praying it? Whatever, he wrote it down intended for Bhaal but had second thoughts and hid it in his room. It shows up in the colony solely because Orin found it there post-stabbing and brought it to Moonrise to taunt Gortash with, and left it in that room in the colony out of a moment of carelessness.

Gortash never ended up seeing it before Tavias found it again, recognised his own handwriting, and promptly had a panic attack at the implications.

3. Balthazar is an infamous necromancer and has extended his 'life' far beyond what should've been. What did Durge think of him?

The man has a sense of style, no doubt there, but Tavias doesn't like him at all personally. Necromancy certainly has its uses, but when it's used to prevent or even reverse death? Yeah that shit's not okay with Bhaal. He also got the impression that Balthazar personally thought little of him, and given how patronising Balth is about Tavias in his notes about Kressa's preoccupation with Tavias, he entirely correct.

4. The Warden hates Durge. Why? What did they do?

Swanned in like he owned the place. Mentioned offhandedly that if she wanted a professional to take care of the prisoners, he would be willing to give her a few pointers. Stared a little too intently at her.

5. The Worgs in Gortash's warehouse, what's the story behind them?

Just security, I think! I don't think Tavias was super involved in all of Gortash's plans, so he may not have even realised they were there.

6. Minsc is quite infamous, did Durge have a hand in the disappearance of his statue? Was it originally their plan or did Orin do something successfully by herself for once? How would your past life Durge react to it?

It was his idea, yeah. Minsc was a known enemy to Bhaalspawn, and he wanted to make sure he could get control of at least one possible obstacle by tadpoling him. If he had been able to find Jaheira, he would have done the same to her. Of course, Jaheira ends up adopting him and Minsc ends up his uncle, so… works out in the end!

7. If your pre-lobotomy Durge could say anything to your post-lobotomy Durge, what would it be?

I think he would be incredulous, but there's enough of the previously sweet kid there that there may also be a bit of envy. He'd openly be angry that post-lobotomy Tavias is rejecting his heritage and his gifts, but there'd be this underlay of, "Why can you do it, and I can't? Do I have to lose myself to be free?"

8. What was Durge's greatest nightmare?

Being cast aside by Bhaal, being told he was irrelevant and useless and unwanted.

9. What do they think of other deities? Especially those of their race or good aligned ones?

Ooh, answered this in an earlier post, will copypaste! "He thinks very little of Bane and Myrkul, considering them the weaker parts of the Dead Three. He has some passing interest in Mystra, although that becomes disgust and loathing after he befriends Gale, is a bit frightened of Lathander, doesn’t have a lot of consideration for Shar other than, “Well, she exists”, although he also ends up pretty disgusted by her after everything with Shadowheart, and is pretty sure Selûne would hate him on instinct but has no negative feelings towards her in return, and is really quite gratified when he’s able to help Aylin." Pre-lobotomy, it's pretty universally a combination of (somewhat performative) disgust and dismissal, and a bit of wariness / fear of those specifically opposed to Bhaal, especially Lathander, Tyr, and Helm.

Drizzt is… a story figure, mostly. Like he knows he exists, but eh, so do a lot of people. Post-lobotomy, I think he'd be a bit more fascinated by him, I can just see him and Astarion starting a mini-bookclub, haha.

11. What would past Durge think of their new companions? Would they like, love, dislike or despise them?

Ooh, don't think he'd like them much XD;; He'd have some passing admiration for Lae'zel's willingness to FIGHT EVERYTHING, but Shadowheart is Suspicious(tm) as a cleric of a different god, Wyll and Karlach both seem too nice and good, and ditto Halsin but with added wariness, since Halsin is an Archdruid and over three hundred years older than him and not to be messed with (whereas he's pretty sure he'd be able to take Wyll and Karlach). He'd be more interested in Gale as a fellow Chosen, but see him more as a cautionary tale on why not to displease your deity or you'll be personally fucked over. I think he'd still find Astarion attractive, but more in a, "I think it would be hot to fuck someone who looks and feels like a corpse" kind of way XD;;

12. What does their handwriting look like?

Generally neat if he's taking time and effort, but when he's stressed, he writes too quickly and often blends letters together. It looks like that on the Prayer.

Generally 'on' is advisable for most, given that it's… kind of gory underfoot. Heh. He does occasionally slip off his boots just to, er, enjoy the experience!

Ooh man rewinding is always a bitch. I feel he'd want to redo his first meeting with Bhaal and compose himself a bit better instead of getting a bit panicky and overwhelmed XD;; Post-lobotomy, obviously, he'd go back and make sure he never killed his foster parents…

2. How does Durge actually view death? Is it a mercy, a gift, or perhaps just nature's course?

Bhaal's mandate. Something that people should embrace and welcome (be grateful when he murders you, dangit!), because the world is a shitshow and it'd be better off if everyone was dead, him included. Probably… probably fair to say that his views on death are a bit warped XD;;

3. What languages does Durge speak?

Mostly just the Baldurian dialect of Common, little bits of ritualistic Infernal, and a bit of Draconic. He can read and write in Espruar, although his pronunciation of Elvish is woeful (post-adventure, Astarion and Halsin help him out with it, and much to his delight, Halsin is also teaching him Wild Elvish).

4. How old are they when the game begins? Did their age affect them or how they view the other Chosen in any way?

31, although he looks more like early 20s due to his half-elven background. He's definitely the youngest of the Chosen - while Gortash is a reasonable 10-15 years older than him, he sees Ketheric as well and truly over the hill and an old relic who's no longer relevant.

5. What was their greatest display of self-control?

All the times over the last twenty years he hasn't killed Sarevok.

Seriously, if Bhaal had ever given him permission, Sarevok would have been a smear on the ground.

6. Did they ever lose control and what happened when they did?

Aside from one very specific time where he lost control and it ended up with him being eleven years old, holding a kitchen knife, and covered in his foster family's blood? XD;; Oooh yeah, several times. It usually ended with, well, a lot of smears on the ground. He more or less tried to 'ride the wave' and let Bhaal take the wheel, although he didn't absolutely love losing control. It was mostly a begrudging acceptance of, "Well, might as well happen."

7. Being divine and all that might have it side effects. Which one did your Durge have to endure? Did their immunity to poisons perhaps also meant they couldn't use potions or did they have a certain effect on people?

Pluses, +4 charisma modifier. Downsides, -1 strength modifier. Also if he had stayed Bhaal's Chosen he would have been functionally immortal.

8. If they could critique one thing about their father and get away scot-free, what would it be?

He has a few things to say about the downstairs anatomy he had been born with!! Also tbh he isn't entirely sure everything has to end in blood and murder. Like. Like can he maybe keep enough of a supply chain going for cinnamon rolls? Can he just kill, like, 99% of the world? Can he keep Enver alive?

9. Did Durge use utensils to eat or did they decide to embrace the old fashioned way Bhaal intended?

He has perfectly good manners when necessary! As a general rule, he only prefers being covered in the blood and viscera of his enemies, not, like, grease and crumbs from his dinner, y'know?

lmao definitely not exclusively cannibalism. He generally does eat like a normal person! Just that you have to ask pretty delicately just what meat is being served XD;; Has a definite sweet tooth. His favourite drink is Amnian dessert wine, his favourite foods are cinnamon rolls, and he loves fresh fruit, especially grapes. If you're having dessert with him, you're probably good to go!

WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE SMELL LIKE ? In armor, ozone. Blasterfire. Gunpowder. Light dusting of oil and acrid smoke. Out of armor, shaving product. Natural male pheromone. If he's been out in the wilderness, also a little campfire smoke, and a brushing of the local flora (e.g. pine).

WHAT DO YOUR MUSE’S HANDS FEEL LIKE ? Not as calloused as they ultimately could be. He does not engage in the kind of repetitive tasks that would lead to them save for weight training, but proper form minimizes their development. In verses where he settles down, they develop more callousing as he spends time taking care of the homestead. In verses where he has cybernetics, they're covered in synthflesh unless battle-damaged.

WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE USUALLY EAT IN A DAY ? The entire contents of a 24 hour ration packet if he has the opportunity to sit down and heat things up. If not, a simpler ration designed for consumption while closer to combat. Cuberats if really pressed. If he's not in a war zone and he doesn't need the calories he'll eat less ration components and substitute whatever the base is offering, or other local food. WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE USUALLY LOOK LIKE / WEAR ? The grand majority of people only see him in his armor. Outside of that, rugged clothing befitting of ranch work or hiking. Boots. Sturdy jackets, jeans, and button up shirts or their GFFA equivalent. In a city environment, dark colors with red highlights. Leather.

He keeps his facial hair cleanly trimmed, only letting their hair on his chin grow out in long established home settings. Greying at the temples. Standard Jango Hair.

IS YOUR MUSE AFFECTIONATE ? HOW SO ? He lives a touch-starved life, so once he likes and is comfortable being around someone, he can be surprisingly heavy on the physical-contact. Loves to sit or lay with his partner, play with their hair/lekku, have them run fingers through his hair. Very cat-like.

Love languages aren't real but Fordo is a gift giver. He finds or creates bespoke objects for people he likes. Woodcarvings, knives/tools, modified blasters. He figures out what they need or could use and gets them something special.

WHAT POSITION DOES YOUR MUSE SLEEP IN ? He's a back sleeper, but he's learned not to be picky. The battlefield necessitates getting all the rest you can wherever you can, so just as often he's in a sitting position. In a safe home environment he would fall asleep in a dad recliner, but not by accident.

COULD YOU HEAR YOUR MUSE IN THE HALLWAY FROM ANOTHER ROOM ? It depends. Due to spending so much time in armor, he's learned how to minimize the clacking it makes, which means when he's out of his armor he moves silently like a cat. In the armor, you may still hear him. Later on he acquires sound dampening field technology that nullifies the sound of even his heaviest armor completely.

Speaking wise, likely not. He is careful about maintaining the right level of volume when walking and talking with someone, especially if the matter is private. If saluted, he generally acknowledges non-verbally.

the game's honestly got about as much content as a normal souls game, but half of it are bethesda style repeater dungeons and the other half is empty space between them

if you stitched the actual bespoke dungeons like stormveil and raya lucaria etc together you'd have the shortest of the souls
