I think the ending of Baby Reindeer went over a lot of people’s head to be honest. The ending isn’t supposed to be a ‘full circle moment’ where Donny ‘becomes’ Martha. It’s supposed to be Donny realising it was never his fault that Martha started stalking him, that his kindness wasn’t at fault. He offered an upset woman a cup of tea for free, that’s something most people would do in that situation. When the bartender gives Donny a drink on the house when he forgot his wallet, it’s Donny realising that kindness should not result in being stalked and harassed. It’s him realising that Martha is very mentally unwell and that the situation wasn’t his fault. Also, stop trying to find the real people the story is based on, Richard Gadd said that it’s not the point of the story and it’s putting real people in danger. Like how are people watching a story of a man being stalked and then going and doing the same thing to real people? It’s gross. Richard Gadd doesn’t owe the public that information, nor do the public need to know the real abusers in the story to understand the point of it.

Scott sighed out a chuckle and shook his head. “Uhhhh, a tale, huh? Well let’s see. I guess something to fall asleep to should either be boring or soft. Boring is dumb, so let’s go with soft…

Let me tell you one of my favorite stories about my granddad. I called him Pappap. Nobody really knows why, certainly not me or my sister. It’s just something she started when she was a toddler, and then it caught on. I think he wanted to be called Papaw or something, but it turned into Pappap instead.

Anyway, I’m originally from Florida; I don’t know if you know that, but I am. My grandparents lived in a house with a pool for a while, and my Pappap taught me how to swim. So picture a tiny little Scott standing on the diving board, peeking over the edge looking all nervous about the water. My Pappap would stand just a few feet away with his arms raised to me, saying, ‘Come on, buddy, you can do it. I’m right here to catch you.’

Well, wouldn’t you know, tiny little Scott took a big breath and hopped down into the water, legs kicking and arms flailing but somehow making progress. And I’d hear Pappap telling me to keep going; I’m almost to him. But it feels like it’s taking forever for me to get to him though. But I keep going.

Finally, I reach him, and he scoops me up in his arms. He’s grinning at me and looking so proud. He points to the direction I came from and said ‘Look, buddy! Look how far you swam all by yourself!’ I look and I swam from the diving board halfway up the pool length. Boy, I was so proud and so excited. I swam that far all by myself! And Pappap talked me up and praised me so much, I felt like I was 10 feet tall.”

Scott sighed and leaned back, a soft smile on his face. “My Pappap was the best Pappap ever.”

Scott laughed at that and nodded. “I was kinda getting that vibe from you. My kid would probably compare you to those grumpy cat memes if I had to guess.”
