I think the ending of Baby Reindeer went over a lot of people’s head to be honest. The ending isn’t supposed to be a ‘full circle moment’ where Donny ‘becomes’ Martha. It’s supposed to be Donny realising it was never his fault that Martha started stalking him, that his kindness wasn’t at fault. He offered an upset woman a cup of tea for free, that’s something most people would do in that situation. When the bartender gives Donny a drink on the house when he forgot his wallet, it’s Donny realising that kindness should not result in being stalked and harassed. It’s him realising that Martha is very mentally unwell and that the situation wasn’t his fault. Also, stop trying to find the real people the story is based on, Richard Gadd said that it’s not the point of the story and it’s putting real people in danger. Like how are people watching a story of a man being stalked and then going and doing the same thing to real people? It’s gross. Richard Gadd doesn’t owe the public that information, nor do the public need to know the real abusers in the story to understand the point of it.

The police’s presence at Martha’s door brought with it a sudden silence. Strange, eerie silence. Not a single day from the moment I met her did she not contact me. Now silence. Strange, eerie silence. Weeks went by, and I started to panic. The emails allowed me to tune not every facet of her emotion. I knew when she was sad, when she missed me, when she was ill or drunk or angry. Now nothing.

abuse, especially of the kind that donny experiences in baby reindeer, rarely manifests its effects in a way that is not complicated, or that doesn't warp one's sense of self, which is part of why i think these stories are so hard to tell, and why it can be difficult for someone without similar experiences to understand its spiderweb of effects.
a huge part of this show is donny coming to terms with his own victimhood, which acts as a great incentive for the story, as well as a doorway for the audience who may be unfamiliar with how victimhood looks when outside of the accepted parameters, the "norm". i love that this series was unafraid to explore every corner of trauma, even the ones confusing or disagreeable. the effects of trauma are muddled more often than not, and i'm glad to have that represented.

Baby Reindeer Review
Netflix has a very large catalog to choose from. Anything you can think of you should be able to find. Baby Reindeer is the latest gem that was recommended to me, and it did not disappoint.
It hits very heavy with the themes and emotional range, and it does not let up. The premise is Donny, a struggling comedian, meets Martha, who, after a fun day at the bar, begins to take things too far when she begins to stalk Donny.
Richard Gadd wrote and created the series and also stars as Donny. This story is based on his real life experiences through out the comedy scene and the impact multiple traumas have had on his career. It is very hard to watch at times and very deliberately so. Gadd does not shy away from multiple characters facing their past trauma head-on, and often times, those scenes are very graphic and uncomfortable.
Baby Reindeer is an unabashed look at mental illness, obsession, sexuality and experiences that create those vulnerabilities within ourselves. At times, Donny finds himself sympathetic towards Martha. He even speaks on multiple things that are confusing to him in terms of sexual vulnerabilities. This show is a lot to take in, and the complex nature of the narrative at times makes it darkly comedic and very intense within minutes of each other. That is thanks in large part to Gadd as Donny and Jessica Gunning as Martha. Both create a sense of tension as the episodes play out. There is always that feeling of dread when wondering what is going to happen next. Never at any point in the 7 episodes are you removed from this world.
At times, what unfolds may leave you breathless, speachless, or on the verge of tears, but not even for one second, are you not invested in the outcome. Through 7 episodes and about 4, maybe 5 hours at max you are fully thrown into this story that demands your attention.

This is one of the darkest shows on Netflix and any platform for that matter. Every bit of this show is hard to take in. Donny's past, the present with Martha, the unhealed emotional scars that are left on a man as he holds it all in. Baby Reindeer is not for those who are looking to escape heavy emotions when watching TV. However, this is the type of story that demands to be told and scene to possibly one day help others feel like their are avenues to talk about this sort of thing. That conversation is never easy. It's never one we hope to have with anyone close to us, but if someone is reaching out please please please lend them an ear. It can make all the difference in some cases.

that baby reindeer show is SO heartbreaking oh my god. I keep remembering it’s a true story and just… oh wow. so sad. I like the way it treats the LGBT characters, though (ik they’re based on real people, of course, but yk what I mean). I think they did a great job at making it nuanced and respectful while still being dramatic and engaging. it’s really good so far just… not really a fun watch

I'm SO fucking angry about the irresponsible discourse around Baby Reindeer by UK journalists, and how they and now actual politicians are actively participating in what appears to be a DARVO attempt by one of his abusers.
THEY tracked her down, SHE self identified herself as "Martha" then claimed she's not. The show makers and Richard Gadd have never identified her as Martha?
And now people are demanding he proves every situation in the show actually happened to him, when he's already admitted there's a fictionalised element to the specifics.
It's just another example of the UK press out for blood and the horrendous way victim blaming permeates throughout society.
Sure, they probably should have put a 'based on' within the 'This is a true story' disclaimer, but Baby Reindeer is not Martha's story, it's HIS and that element is true.
