Iā€™m 12 years late to it but letā€™s ramble about Scylla
Of course it took the Wisdom Saga nearly dropping for me to finally finish this
This may be a collective organized rant or itā€™s (more likely) gonna be a super-ramble nonsense jumble pile of me trying to words
A bit of background- I got into Epic right around the time the Ocean Saga released; I quickly got obsessed (as one does) and have watched a bunch of Jorgeā€™s older shorts on the making of different songs, including just about everything I could find on Scyllaā€™s song. I was enamored by the vocals Jorge teased us with and as the Thunder Saga drew nearer, Scylla was hands-down the song I was most hyped for.
And BY GOLLY I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. I was blown away by Scylla on the livestream. Everything- the vocals, the instrumentals, the visuals- came together beautifully and Iā€™m gonna ramble about it
But to really see Odysseus through this we gotta start with Suffering (which is an absolute bop); specifically when the siren tells Odysseus about Scylla. When she first says Scylla, Odysseus is repellent of that option, judging by his immediate ā€œnoā€. He isnā€™t immediately on board. He doesnā€™t want to sacrifice his crew. And (even though we all knew this was coming) it takes the rest of Suffering and Different Beast before we finally see that heā€™s willing to go through with it in the opening of Scylla (what with him saying ā€œthis is our only way homeā€ and all that).
Parts of Scylla sound like a waltz!! I havenā€™t noticed anyone else mention that yet. Maybe itā€™s just me. But in the first section during the ā€œdeep downā€s and Ody/Eury dialogue the chords all sound waltz-y to me.
Odysseus only has a few lines in this song as well as some interesting parts when he doesnā€™t speak.
His very first lines- ā€œthe lair of Scyllaā€¦ this is our only way homeā€ arenā€™t in the same harsh tone as Different Beast. To me it sounds like heā€™s trying to justify his decision to himself. He has to go through with this. Itā€™s the only way that heā€™ll get back to Ithica.
Contrast this with his tone as he speaks to Eurylochus- ā€œnot much to sayā€. Itā€™s back to being rough and hard. Heā€™s closing himself off to the rest of his crew, including Eurylochus. Heā€™s becoming the monster to them. (Rawr rawr rawr)
The confession scene- THE CONFESSION SCENE MY GOODNESS. Honestly I wasnā€™t exactly expecting Eurylochus to have opened the bag but Iā€™m not surprised either. It was a very ā€œahhhā€ moment for me. And Scyllaā€™s words-
Iā€™ve seen a few posts talking about how they believed Scyllaā€™s words were directed to Eurylochus in this scene, but I never thought that was the case. I think Jay deliberately created the parallel there, but Eurylochus doesnā€™t seem like heā€™s *hearing* Scylla yet. (Remember- later on, he says ā€œsomething approachesā€ as if thatā€™s the first heā€™s seeing/hearing of Scylla.) No, these lyrics are meant for Odysseus, and what heā€™s about to do. Not to say there isnā€™t any relevance to Eurylochus here- ā€œyou hide a reason for shame ā€¦ leaving them feeling betrayed / breaking the bonds that youā€™ve madeā€ alternate with Eurylochusā€™s apology, as they shed light on what Eurylochus *had* done as well as what Odysseus was *going* to do. There is a strong parallel here- but itā€™s not Eurylochus Scylla is talking to. (This is also supported by the lyrics ā€œyou know that we are the sameā€ and ā€œwe both know what it takes to surviveā€, neither of which have much relevance to Eurylochus here.) The lyric ā€œyou know that we are the sameā€ is an interesting one, but Iā€™ll get back to it later.
So Odysseus basically ghosts Eurylochus- and yes heā€™s probably furious about the wind bag incident but I think another reason for his silence is because heā€™s been hearing Scylla. Odysseus canā€™t forgive nor blame Eurylochus because heā€™s about to betray Eurylochus right back. Maybe he just canā€™t face speaking to Eurylochus with what heā€™s about to do.
Did anyone else at this point realize the sole purpose of the song ā€œFull Speed Aheadā€ was for nothing more than to create a motif to be used absolutely everywhere
Then we get to Odysseusā€™s first words to Eurylochus! When first listening I could feel my heart dropping, as did likely everyone else who knew about Scylla from the Odyssey. But the DELIVERY. The simple DELIVERY of those CONDEMNING LINES- Eurylochus doesnā€™t even react to this order. This is really how you know that he- and the rest of the crew- donā€™t know where theyā€™re headed. (Iā€™ve seen plenty of people talk about Eurylochusā€™s thoughts during this scene and afterward so Iā€™m not gonna tread over that same ground.) All I can say is my heart sank.
Did anyone else think about the lack of a ā€œdanger is nearā€ motif in this song? Iā€™ve heard a possible modified version in the song (1:14 if anyone wants to listen for it), but it doesnā€™t fully fit, and nowhere else is a hint of this theme shown. And thereā€™s clearly about to be danger in this song- for six of Odysseusā€™s crew, that is. I think the reason we canā€™t hear a ā€œdanger is nearā€ motif in this song because there isnā€™t a danger for Odysseus, and thatā€™s who the danger is near motif is for. After all, the motif was present in ā€œMutinyā€, right *after* they got through the danger of Scylla. Just another something cool Iā€™ve found that I havenā€™t seen anyone else comment on before.
ā€œCaptain, something approachesā€
ā€œHello.ā€
The DRUMS ON EACH BEAT, the VIOLIN RUNS, all with the background SHEPARD TONES falling and then rising, the SUSPENSE- THE ***SUSPENSE***
Before Scylla came out, I repeatedly watched the Scylla audition call video Jay put out, and from that I had the thought that the buildup section would be much shorter. Boy was that not the case and boy was that such a good decision the more I think about it. You really feel the suspense gradually build like it does for the crew, first seeing the vague shapes of Scylla and slowly having more and more revealed in the torchlight before the heads pounce.
Not to mention Scyllaā€™s voice actor is amazing. She does a wonderful job of the smooth, almost angelic voice at the beginning and end, but in the chorus?! Jayā€™s videos on it didnā€™t do this justice! The MONSTROUS way she growls, the HARMONIES that come in in the second chorus- not to mention the crazy drums and other music in the background adding to the chaos.
And in the background you can *hear* when each man is scooped up, when each man is being devoured. Once again youā€™re right there with the crew, hearing your fellow friends get eaten. Itā€™s not something I would expect to hear in the official song when their deaths arenā€™t the main focus during the chorus (the main focus being Scylla herself), but props to Jay for adding that detail.
One thing I noticed in the amazing animatic done for this section that I havenā€™t noticed many people specifically point out yet, is how Eurylochus doesnā€™t seem to catch on itā€™s the torches that are signaling to Scylla which men to eat until *after* he passes his own on. You can see it in the horror on his face as he looks at the second-to-last torch drop, then as he turns to the final man, the man heā€™d given his torch to (as he presumably went to try and help someone else from getting eaten? Thatā€™s how I interpret him leaving the torch with the final guy, like a ā€œI need both hands for thisā€ kind of thing).
Then the END- after the rampage- the final ā€œWe must do what it takes to surviveā€- it quiets down, the waltzy pattern comes back out, and the final line- ā€œWe are the same, you and Iā€
Back to that previous lyric I mentioned, ā€œyou know that we are the sameā€. Near the beginning of the song when I heard it, the lyric recalled to my mind that villain trope of ā€œweā€™re not so differentā€ (I think thatā€™s a trope). And here at the end of the song that sentiment is repeated- and Odysseus SINGS WIRH HER. He AGREES. Up until now Odysseus hasnā€™t acknowledged Scylla talking to him, but here heā€™s given into the thought that yes, now he *is* the monster - to both his enemies *and* his crew. (Rawr rawr rawr)
And thatā€™s how Scyllaā€™s become one of my absolute favorite songs from Epic

For the sake of comedy, I redrew this iconic S1 panel in the S3 style. Better or worse? šŸ’€šŸ˜† /s
Tumblr media
edit: because i've gotten comments on both this post and the one i shared in the subreddit that seem to misinterpret why i made this, y'all this is meant to be satire, i'm not actually trying to 'outdo' the original panel, it's supposed to look like the S3 art style which looks boring and stiff compared to the original LMAO (I even used S3 panels as the base to work off of when creating this) so yes all the issues with the redrawn version are on purpose, i'm well aware it's not as good as the original and that the anatomy is wack, that just tells me i succeeded because it's p much exactly what S3 of LO looks like JFKDLAJFDASKLJKASLD

Man, it's cool and all if you see a metaphor for marginalisation in the monstrous, and if you want the power fantasy of 'what if you could just eat anybody who threatened you/pissed you off'. Me too.
However, as soon as you start saying 'no, these monsters are a 1:1 on Specific Marginalised Group, and you have to treat them in the fiction like they are directly representative of real human members of the marginalised group', BUT you also, in the fiction, make them hurt/kill/eat humans? And then try to shame me, your audience, for noticing or engaging with the bit where they kill people, because you made them directly representative of a real-world marginalised group? You have lost me, and also, I think, the plot.
#hear yourself. for the love of whatever you cherish.#'but they only kill bigots so ACTUALLY they're the GOOD GUYS -' your metaphor of monstrosity is entirely premised on the question of#'what if what you went around righteously killing; believing your actions to be justified;#were actually people and it was not in fact righteous or justified to just kill them'#'what if the world isn't neatly split into 'good guys' and 'bad guys'#who gets to decide who or what is 'bad'? because that's the original problem of monstrosity-as-metaphor-for-marginalisation#(if as a creator you say 'oh my intention with this was X' cool!#if instead you go with something like. well.#'well in this setting monsters are so rare it doesn't matter that they kill people and you'd have to be a homicidal sadistic psychopath >#< to hunt them; but sure I guess if you want to play a Bad Person' well I might have#but if you're going to explicitly judge me for wanting to engage with the moral question of 'how justified is this and who would do it#versus how justified are these monsters if they do have to harm or kill people to continue to exist'#then maybe I just don't want to play your game at all)#anyway I'm sick to death of poor uwu cozy vampires who are SO marginalised so I'm not Allowed to care about all the people they murder#it being fucked up is what's fun about it! do all the other shit but let me take the murders seriously!#and inb4 someone accuses me of being a bigot for saying 'actually I don't think you get a free pass to kill and eat people if you're gay'#remember when the CW's famously reactionary and conservative Supernatural tried to just gloss over the part where every time its heroes >#< killed a demon with a magic knife it also killed the person the demon was possessing#and say 'oh no it's fine we don't care about those killings; they don't matter; don't bother caring about them either'#but they were doing it to glorify exactly the kind of people that these 'monster as metaphor' stories are trying to cast as expendable?#I have other examples that are like. real dramas. but That Paranormal Show is the one that's in the same niche that I'm talking about here#it feels more insidious when it comes through a fantasy show where there are monsters involved#so you can say 'no it's not real so it doesn't matter'#but then ALL of it is equally not real. and vampires are not actually an oppressed group. because they don't exist.#you can say 'these vampires are a metaphor for an oppressed group so this fiction matters in real life'#or you can say 'don't care about the murders because they weren't actually real'#but you can't say both and then get mad at ME for treating the murders as seriously as the vampires#let me engage with your premise and don't waste my fucking time#or just set your fluff in the Sesame Street universe where vampires drink cherry Kool-Aid and help kids learn to count
