Weekly seasonal anime thoughts
Yuru Camp S03E10: this was another comfy and chill episode! Itâs just nice to see everyone doing their own thing. We got to meet 2 new characters and I like them so far. Iâm interested to see how these two girls will join Nadeshiko and coâs outdoor activities club!
Unfortunately, Ani-One had some mistranslations with the subs. Hopefully, theyâll get edited since many people pointed them out in the comments.
The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio Ep9: after the drama-heavy episode last week, this weekâs lighter episode was a welcoming one! Itâs nice to see Satou and Watanabe hang out with their classmates and relax. Watanabe supporting Satou in her own way was very cute too! Iâm glad Satou did well in her recording.
Dungeon Meshi Ep23: Senshiâs backstory got me very emotional. His past shaped his way of life and seeing him be with his new party/family really warmed my heart. I didnât expect the party to be changed by the changelings so that was pretty funny. I canât deal with elf Senshi haha!
Jellyfish Canât Swim in the Night Ep9-10: I knew the rift between Kano and Mahiru was coming but I still wasnât prepared for the pain⊠It hurts more when I understand why both of them stood their ground. Mahiru wants to be acknowledged and get better with her art. Her self-worth and identity are tied to her art in a way. Recalling how insecure/jealous she got when that one artists drew JELEE fanart better than her, her decision to work with Kanoâs mom made sense.
Of course, Kanoâs issue with her mom is important too. Kano felt that Mahiru chose her mom over her and it brought back the bad memories of her time as Nonoka. It definitely feels like both girls are being manipulated by Kanoâs mom who doesnât seem to care about the girls beyond her own ambitions.
Mei was the MVP for being honest about not wanting JELEE to be disband. Bless her. Shoutout to Kiui too! Without her Kano wouldnât have heard Meiâs message. I believed these girls will be alright :)

dirtbags // 2: Lola
Summary: High school AU, 1984, Winter. Itâs hard to make friends when youâre the new kid starting halfway through Junior year, but slowly Lola seems to be making a few. Itâs much easier to have a rumour started about you, especially when you tend to make questionable choices at parties, but thatâs much less fun.
A/N: 8173 words. Lolaâs dad is the MVP, trust me. i meant to put this out a week ago whoops!! also im allowed to reference my own Queen oc as a treat. @bluehourmotel, @misscharlottelee and again, interludes are A Softer World quotes.
[ m a s t e r p o s t ]
the best revenge is living well. the second best revenge is fire ants.
The fact that after being in town for a total of two weeks, Lolaâs closest friend is the gas station attendant a full fifteen minute drive away from her house is kind of sad. Not that sheâs disappointed to be Mickâs friend, heâs got a dry sense of humor but a good heart and heâs refreshing honesty, but sheâs been at this new school for about a week and a half, has already made out with at least one person, has possibly convinced said-personâs cousin that sheâs trying to corrupt him, and started to make a name for herself - whether itâs good or bad is yet to be seen -, and yet Mick Mars, nineteen-year-old gas station attendant, apprentice electrician, and aspiring guitar player is her closest friend.Â
But sheâs always been kind of terrible at making friends her own age.
âYou have lost all respect from me,â Mick told her on Monday morning after the party, over the counter of the gas station as heâs ringing her up for her smokes and iced coffee before she went to school, âyou could have picked anyone to mack on at that party, and you chose Tommy fuckinâ Lee?â
âHe was nice to me, what was I meant to do?â Lola declared, realizing too late that that statement revealed absolutely too much about herself to a near stranger. Mick, however, just gives her a flat look.
âYou need higher standards.â He doesnât seem too phased by her. Lola takes this in stride, and nods, agreeing with a sigh.Â
âWhat time do you finish work?â She asks, changing the subjects quickly as sheâs pulling out a bill from her back pocket, âdad said heâs happy to let you have a look at that weird light switch that doesnât do anything that I was telling you about.âÂ
âI finish at ten tonight, Iâm working a double,â he groans at the very thought of it. Lola gives him a sympathetic look, and tells him to only come around if heâs up to it, otherwise leaving it for another day.
Thatâs the day that Lola realises the whole school knows about her and Tommy at the party, that she has Art with Charlotte before lunch, and also that Charlotte canât look her in the eye.
Tuesday the school realises that sheâs not just Lola Who Gives It Up For Free At Parties, but that sheâs Lola The New Girl and that they donât know anything about her beyond that. Thereâs a guy in her wood working class with long black hair and a dangerous smile that winks at her; she flips him off, knowing all he cared about was knowing if the rumours were true. Sheâs got AP French last period with that ginger from the party who wouldnât stop laughing, Eileen; sheâs a lot more serious, sober. The cheerleader, Heather, wonât stop giving her these weird, calculating looks.
Wednesday thereâs a new rumour, that she was expelled from her last school. The population of the school hasnât decided what exactly they think she was expelled for yet. Turns out she has English with that guy from her woodworking class, he just hadnât turned up for their lesson on Monday; he sits at the back like Lola, in the other corner, and the teacher calls him Nikki in a tone like sheâs already disappointed. Lola can see why, he fell asleep at his desk. Art last period with Charlotte; she still barely looks at Lola.Â
Thursday. Heather asks in AP French if Lolaâs heard what everyoneâs saying about her; her tone is sweet and dangerous in equal measure and Lola doesnât trust whatâs about to come out of her mouth. The new rumour is that Lola was expelled for sleeping with a teacher; something about the glint in Heatherâs eye is cruel, and Lola asks her sweetly if sheâs more jealous of Lola or the teacher. That shuts Heather up fast, and Eileenâs cough behind them sounds more like sheâs trying to hide a laugh. But it still gets to her; Lola focuses so hard on ignoring the girls gossiping loudly about her at their station behind her in Home Economics that she burns the apple danishes she was attempting, and she throws the burnt pastries, and the tray theyâd been cooking on, into the bin until she realises her mistake and sulkily fishes the tray out again. Thankfully, the teacher didnât notice.
Friday, and Lola hasnât paid much attention to Vince, whose house sheâs been to but who she hadnât properly met until their classes had P.E at the same time; heâs in the year below her, but still manages to sidle up to her while theyâre both waiting for their teachers to prepare the field for whatever torture theyâre masquerading as physical exercise today. She tells him to fuck off; thereâs something about the way he conducts himself that she doesnât like, like heâs putting on a show of being shallow and vain and the life of the party. Instead, Vinceâs voice goes quiet and he tells her that Tommyâs a good kid with a good heart -
âYou give this speech to everyone you caught making out at your parties, or just me, âcos you think Iâm a bitch and Iâm gonna hurt one of âyour brosâ?â She snapped, lip curling, and Vinceâs brow creases into a frown, âIâm not his fucking girlfriend, we made out a little, you donât have to act like Iâm going to break his heart, so piss off.â
A moment passes, and he appears to don his shallow, playboy mask when he asks her slyly if the rumours are true. She shoves him hard enough that he skitters back a few feet, and Lola earns her first after school detention.
The thing is, she and Tommy are already on the same page about this, it was a what happens while drunk at a party stays at that party. Or at least, itâs meant to. Either way, Charlotteâs protectiveness, and Vinceâs... attempt at protectiveness was unwarranted. Maybe itâs because Tommy, for whatever reason, has started hanging around Lola at lunch.
She doesnât sit in the cafeteria like the rest of them, or even on that little section of the roof the intimidating pack of punks, rockers, and smokers have found a way to get to. Lola sits against the fence near the science building, close to the carpark thatâs always open for some stupid reason, as though sheâs contemplating bolting.
âDonât you have friends?â Lolaâs tone is kind of hard, and perhaps her words are on the nose, and a little cruel, but itâs Wednesday, and this is the third day in a row heâs found her and spent the entirety of lunch with her. They donât speak much, Lola smokes and picks apart whatever her dadâs latest cooking experiment is before she eats it, and Tommy practices twirling his drumsticks.Â
âI have friends, do you?â Tommy responds, more than a little defensive, rubbing at his brow where heâd just managed to hit himself mid-drumstick-twirl, taken aback by her question. Lola gives him a flat look. âSomeone told me you were expelled from your last school,â Tommyâs gaze shifts to the carpark, to the last car and itâs telltale rocking and fogged up windows.
âThey say why?â
âNah,â Tommy shakes his head, scowl softening as he gets back to practicing, âit true?â Lolaâs picking out and eating the apple chunks from the slice of pie her father had packed for the day, still watching the car with the mildest of interest. She shakes her head. Tommy hums noncommittally. They spend the rest of lunch in silence.
âHe keeps hanging out with me!â The following afternoon, Lola gripes to Mick on his smoke break after she gets out of school for the afternoon.
âYou keep hanging out with me,â Mick points out, peeling the label off of a bottle of soda.
âAnd?â
âI donât tell you to fuck off.â
âYeah? So?â
âBecause,â and Mick heaves a heavy sigh, like it pains him to admit, âweâre friends, Lola,â but he pauses and amends, âGod knows why.â
âFuck you, Iâm a delight,â Lola huffs, and pulls her oversized denim jacket tighter around herself to ward off the chill of the afternoon breeze. If this were pretty much any other state, theyâd be knee-deep in snow; thank God for LA, snowâs pretty for five minutes before itâs a pain.
âDo you tell him to fuck off?â Mick asks pointedly, as if exhausted that he has to spell it out for her. Lolaâs quiet, but her answerâs clear. Mick clears his throat with a cough. Lolaâs scowl deepens.Â
She brings it up to her father that night.Â
âDo you reckon Tommyâs trying to be my friend?â She asked, gaze intense as she focuses on slicing apples into little cubes. Leo, her father, who was kneeding a blend of spices into a ball of dough that would end up being a pie crust, paused.
âThe kid who has been hanging out with you at lunch?â He thought for a moment, âthe one from the party?â
âI told him it was nothing serious-â Lola tried, exasperatedly cutting the apples a little rougher, but her fatherâs warm, gentle laugh cut her off.
âYes, I think heâs trying to be your friend,â he told her, which Lola hadnât exactly wanted to hear, but the information was easier to digest coming from him than it was coming from Mick, âhe obviously likes you -â
âBut I told him -â
âI know, you told him it wasnât serious, but dear, that doesnât mean he likes you less as a person - youâre a very cool cat, I can see why heâd want to be your friend,â he gives her finger guns, and Lola canât help but laugh softly at his attempt to be hip.Â
âChrist, dad,â Lola huffs, smiling fondly, but heâd managed to cheer her spirits considerably.Â
âI burnt my danishes today,â Lolaâs voice goes quiet as she goes back to focusing on her task, and her dad makes a noise of intrigue, âgot distracted and crisped the whole tray.â
âYouâll get âem next time; just fifteen minutes, remember?â
âFifteen minutes, no distractions,â Lola agreed, almost by rote, thankful that he doesnât ask about what had distracted her. She can still hear the whispered gossip and giggles that had come from the cooking station behind her in Home Economics.
Her dad knows that her peers think she was expelled from her last school, but she keeps her mouth shut about the fact that today theyâd decided it was because she had relations with a teacher; he knows almost everything about her, but he didnât need to know about a whole school calling her a slut. Heâd blow it out of proportion, and it isnât getting to her since she knew for a fact it wasnât true.Â
They finish the apple pie with itâs rosemary and lemongrass crust in good spirits. The flavours donât go together as well as Leo had hoped, but itâs another step closer to the perfect apple pie heâd been trying for. Leo packs her two of the leftover slices for lunch, as a not-so-subtle hint.Â
On Friday, Lola hands Tommy a plastic container with a piece of apple pie, with a rosemary and lemongrass crust in it.
âIs it poison?â He asks. Lola doesnât look at him, picking the individual apple pieces out and eating them one at a time.
âThe crust tastes weird if you eat it with the filling,â Lolaâs voice is flat as she explains instead of answering, âbut the apples are sweet.â She eats another cube of apple, then breaks off a corner of the golden, perfectly cooked crust, now cold and stiff from spending the night in the refrigerator.Â
âWhy are you giving me this?âÂ
âEat it or donât, I donât care,â Lola tells him, hunching further in on herself; like this, she canât see the way Tommyâs expression has broken out into a smile.
âThanks Lola,â but the smile is evident in his voice, confirming all of her suspicions at once. Tommy took her at her word when she said the rumours werenât true, even if the rest of the school believed them, so Lola supposes sheâs actually okay with the fact that her second ever friend in the entirety of California is the marching band geek in the year below her who she made out with at a party once.Â
Also maybe sheâs just kind of terrible at making friends.
you and me baby! we are the future! and the future is bleak.
âWait, youâve never met Nikki Sixx?â Tommy asked, sitting patiently with his back against the fence, his hand resting on her knee as she fills in the the nails of his left hand with black sharpie, âdidnât you go to his gig the other week?â
âI didnât know anyone,â Lola pointed out, and Tommy makes a thoughtful noise.
âYouâd love him, heâs so fucking cool,â he assured her, which made Lola give pause; Tommy also thinks Vince is fucking cool, and she wants to throw Vince out a window, âhe was the one on bass.âÂ
âThe one in the leather pants?â Lola couldnât help but smile at the memory; sheâd appreciated it at the time, and could appreciate it now. Tommy, however, rolled his eyes.
âThe girls love the leather pants,â he gave a quiet sigh, before adding, almost to himself, âwish I had leather pants.âÂ
âLeather pants would look good on you,â Lola pinches at his thigh for a moment, and goes back to filling in his nails. missing Tommyâs pleased, flustered little smile.Â
âYou know Freddie paints his nails like this,â Tommy says instead, changing the topic of conversation.
âFreddie?â
âMercury. From Queen; you know Queen, right?â And he sounds kind of skeptical, like if she doesnât know them, they canât be friends anymore. Lola pauses again, her hand soft on Tommyâs where sheâs filling in around his ring fingerâs cuticle.
âI wanna climb John Deacon like a fucking tree,â she mutters, which startles a laugh out of Tommy, his hand jerking up to cover his mouth, making Lola leave a black line against his knee, through the rip in his jeans. When she looks up at him, however, her eyes are shining with mirth, âcome on, man, you must have seen the video of them performing in Montreal last year!â And she licks her lips, watching Tommyâs blush grow steadily darker. After a beat, Lola bursts out laughing, shattering the tension and shifting to sit beside him, idly doodling on her own hand with the marker as Tommy shakes his head with amusement.
Lola starts humming Back Chat to herself, and Tommy leans his head back against the wire of the fence, listening for a moment.
âYou and Charlie would get along great too,â he considers, and Lola doesnât stop humming, nor does she look to him, âshe likes Roger, but probably just because she thinks heâs pretty.â Lola can hear his eyeroll without even seeing it, and sheâs not sure why, but she files that information away in the back of her mind; sheâd never gotten an especially shallow vibe from Charlotte, but there was a uncertain undeniable appeal to Roger Taylorâs pretty-boy charm.
âDidnât his girlfriend leave him for Bowie?â Lola asks mildly, barely pausing to speak between humming notes.
âRocket Mercury?â
âHer nameâs Rocket?â Lola snorts, finally looking at him, and Tommyâs lips twisted into an amused grin.Â
âHer nameâs Ash, but everyone calls her Rocket,â he says, like heâs in the know, and Lola stays quiet, nodding and trying not to laugh, âand yeah, I think so, sheâs been with a few people since him I think; Bowie, this girl from this English band Hawkwind, Elton John maybe? Or someone around him I think.â Tommy nods, and Lolaâs kind of intrigued as to why he knows so much about Queenâs drummerâs partner, but something else has caught her attention.
âA girl from Hawkwind?â Tommy doesnât seem to notice the way Lolaâs voice has softened, or how her expression has dropped to something carefully neutral. Sheâs drawing a little flower on the knuckle of her thumb.
âOne of their dancers, Stacy, maybe?â Tommyâs own tone is light, like he doesnât even realise Lolaâs hanging onto his every word regarding this one little detail about a woman she doesnât even know, âwas kind of a scandal, but it was years ago; sheâs Freddieâs sister after all, maybe itâs genetic.â
âGenetic?â
âLiking girls and guys, you know?â And he pauses. Lolaâs frozen beside him, the marker pressed hard against her skin, breath caught in her throat. He throws it out so casually, so easily. Her hands are shaking. The words so kind when he says them, so unlike what sheâs used to hearing. Tommyâs already moved on to the next thought. âactually, Iâm not sure if Freddieâs like, legit her brother, but anyways, she and Roger are back together; Iâm glad.â As if a sixteen-year-oldâs opinion on a rock legendâs love life mattered, âhe seems happier with her, all his best live shows were when they were together.â
âIâd kill to play half as well as him,â itâs almost wistful when Tommy says it, interrupting Lolaâs thoughts, his gaze trained on the sky, as if imagining heâs on stage himself. Lola lets out a long, quiet breath, recentering herself as she looks to him.
âYou wanna play drums?âÂ
âI can play drums,â Tommy tells her like itâs the most obvious thing in the world, âbut not nearly as good as Roger Fucking Taylor, can you imagine?â But Lolaâs more focused on the -
âI thought you just played in the marching band, can you play, like, full -â and she sits forward, gesturing like sheâs tapping on a full drumkit, eyes shinning. Suddenly, in the face of her rare, unrestrained smile, Tommy feels himself growing nervous, like heâll let her down if heâs not actually as good as he thinks he is.
âIâve got a kit in my garage,â he admits, and Lola pauses, letting her excitement simmer, as though realising it had gotten the best of her, breaking her cool and aloof facade.
âThatâs cool as hell,â she does add, however, and Tommy beams.
âThanks,â he mumbles, all flustered at even the slightest praise, âman, youâd really like Charlie, I know she looks all fancy and intimidating, but sheâs a real softie inside.â
âYou are really pushing hard for me to be friends with your cousin,â Lola notes, giving him a sidelong glance, and Tommyâs nose scrunches up, caught out.
âShe thinks youâre trying to corrupt me,â he grumbles, âbut if you guys met sheâd know youâre not.â
âI am corrupting you,â Lola smirks, ânext week I plan on peer pressuring you into smoking.â
âIâve smoked before!â Tommyâs up in arms, like the implication that he hasnât done something as low-level cool as smoking offends him.
âDude I was kidding, I gave you half my cigarette yesterday,â Lola reminds him, and the bell rings.
While Lola was more than happy to let sleeping dogs lie, it appeared that Charlotte was not, and less than two days after her conversation with Tommy, Lola finds herself sitting by Charlotteâs side in their shared art class.
Itâs the last class of the day, and Charlotteâs the one who sits by Lola. Thereâs no preamble, barely acknowledging the decision, just opening her notebook and focusing on the theory the teacher had already started to jot down on the whiteboard.
When theyâre given free time, however, to work on personal projects, Charlotte opens her sketchbook and sharpens her pencil, and without looking at Lola, begins speaking quietly.
âTommy thinks weâd get along,â Charlotte sounds completely innocent and perfectly harmless, but Lola remember how Charlotte had looked at her, part deer-in-the-headlights startled at the realisation, and knee-jerk protective fury, at Vinceâs party when she realised who Lola had been kissing.Â
âSo Iâve heard,â Lola doesnât look up, but Charlotteâs pencil stills on her paper. After a beat, Lola turns to see Charlotte giving her a curious look. Propping her head up on her hand, Lola gives a thin, amused smile, âhe also thinks Iâd be good friends with Nikki Sixx; was he the one you yelled at, at the gig?â
Instead of being flustered or going red at the mention of the moment, Charlotteâs expression lights up, as if the idea somehow delights her, and slowly sheâs nodding. All her earlier reservations and hostility was quickly leaving her.
âYeah, actually I told Nikki you reminded me of him, actually -â
âI remind you of Nikki?â Lolaâs grin widened, and she shifted to face Charlotte further.Â
âHeâs kind of a tool -â Charlotte blurted after a moment of contemplation, and Lolaâs eyebrows raised in amused surprise. Charlotteâs quick to backtrack, âI mean, Iâm not saying you are- well, I donât know you, but I mean, Tommy -â Charlotte frowns at that, expression falling as she considered quietly, âactually, I mean, I love him, but heâs not the greatest judge of character; he thinks Nikki hangs the stars, despite never really speaking to him,â she pauses and heaves a sigh of realisation, âthat probably why he thinks so highly of him -â
âI thought they were friends,â Lolaâs genuinely surprised, given how kindly Tommy had spoken of him.
âHalf the school is terrified of Nikki, half seems to be in love with him; Tommyâs in the second half.â
âAnd which half are you?â
âIâm the only person who seems to think heâs just kind of a pest,â Charlotteâs response is surprisingly mild, as if she doesnât quite believe what sheâs saying.
âHeâs talented, though,â Lola offers, and Charlotte looks back to her, as if brought from her own thoughts. Thereâs a pause, a lull. Lola puts down her pen, and turns more fully to Charlotte, stretching her arm out over the desk, and resting her head fully on it, like a particularly smug cat stretching out in the sun. Charlotte is slower to put down her pencil, but does so after another moment, pristine fingernails drumming against her sketchbook for a moment.Â
âHe was talented,â Charlotte agreed, thought it sounds like she doesnât quite want to, âmy ex actually got me into his kind of music, he was a fan of Nikkiâs too; Iâd tell Nikki I enjoy his music but itâd go straight to his ego,â and she casts Lola a sidelong look, lips stretched into a smirk, which Lola returns.Â
âI am a little bit of a tool,â Lola finally admits with a self deprecating grin, and Charlotte shakes her head.
âYouâd fucking love him,â Charlotte tells her, with a strained, sort of resigned huff of laughter, like the concept of them meeting was a little bit horrifying, and already exhausting.
âYou like his kind of music,â Lola circled back around to quickly, ânever pictured you as a hard rocker, youâre very...â and she trails down, looking at Charlotteâs pristine cheerleading uniform, and thick, black tights, the only thing protecting her legs from the Winter air. The blonde shifts a little uncomfortably under the scrutiny, brow furrowing.
âI know,â Charlotte says flatly, crossing her ankles, far too self aware in the moment, âyou expect me to just be listening to nothing but Abba and Madonna all day?â She sneers, suddenly haughty again, and Lola licks her lips, intrigued; she can tell sheâs pushed a button, and debates for a moment if she wants to press it further.Â
âNot all the time,â Lola said, sitting back up slowly, âbut I mean, Iâm kind of partial to Does Your Mother Know, thereâs no shame in loving Abba,â she shrugs, and Charlotte lets herself visibly relax.Â
âNever pictured you as an Abba fan,â Charlotte actually grins.
Thereâs a distinct lack of hostility in the air between the two girls by the time the class ends, after spending the entire class gushing over various bands across a surprising range of genres, and Lola quickly finds she appreciates how wrong her initial impression of Charlotte had been.
As theyâre leaving for the day, or well, Lolaâs leaving, and Charlotteâs heading to cheer practice, the conversation lulls as Charlotte grows thoughtful.
âHey, just... Tommyâs kind of a hopeless romantic,â and even as she speaks, she knows Lolaâs growing irate at Charlotteâs hesitant tone, âand honestly, the girls he goes for usually donât... they donât usually give him the time of day, and he obviously thinks the world of you, I just donât want you to -â
âIâve told him that I donât want to date him; heâs the one who keeps hanging around me,â Lolaâs own tone appears to surprise Charlotte, now that she understands the root of the other girlâs protectiveness, âweâre...â and the word catches in Lolaâs throat for a moment, knowing that speaking it makes it true, âfriends.âÂ
Lola glances at Charlotte out the corner of her eye, and sees the way Charlotteâs lips twist into a pleased little smirk.
âI was just making sure.â
love is stupid. happiness is admitting we arenât better than stupid.
Leo Fields, thirty-nine years old, owner of soon-to-be-named Leo Dinerâs in suburban LA, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, who worked in the luxurious Parker House restaurant in Boston and quit after ten years there, including three years as Sous Chef and one year as Head Chef, only to open his own 50s style diner a mere ten minutes away in Salem, has and will always claim his favourite food is Easy Cheese.
Once, a long time ago, Lola had asked him why.
Sheâs asked him a lot of things, why heâd left his high-end restaurant to essentially flip burgers, why he kept his hair long, what his tattoos meant -
Lolaâs eight, sitting on the counter and swinging her legs while Leo was crushing garlic to add to their dinner, his hair tied back into a large bun atop his head.
âPeople will try and tell you that just because something is expensive, fancy, or higher class,â Leo had rolled his eyes exaggeratedly at that, putting on a voice to make his daughter laugh, âthat itâs better; they are wrong. If something brings you joy, it is better than all things that do not bring you joy, no matter how fancy the things you donât like are,â heâd told her very seriously, âbetter is not real, better is what you believe; better for you means healthier, and thatâs real, but when people use better to mean good, they mean that itâs good in their mind, and maybe you agree, but maybe you wonât.â And he scrapes the garlic into the pan and oil cooking on low as he then began dicing onions.
âI use all my fancy training and knowledge to make foods I think are better, but now I get to also serve them with a smile, and I get to talk to the people Iâm giving the food to, get to know them, let them know theyâre welcome here,â he tries to smile while his eyes are watering from the onions, almost finished cutting them. âPeople in my old fancy restaurant didnât want that, they wanted you to think they were better than you, and if you thought their food wasnât good, thatâs because youâre not fancy enough, and youâre not welcome here.âÂ
âBut thatâs wrong,â Lola said with a slight frown, looking to her father for confirmation, and after he wiped his eyes with the back of his hands, he beamed.
âExactly,â he nodded and scraped the diced onions into the pan too, moving easily about the kitchen to pull mince from the refrigerator, âpeople liking something different to you is actually great; if everyone in the world liked Easy Cheese, weâd never be able to buy it!â And Lola laughed at that, the example making it easy for her to understand his point, âbut making them feel bad for liking those things, thatâs bad; thatâs why I have my hair long, why I have my tattoos, theyâre part of who I am, theyâre part of my familyâs history and where I come from, and I like them. If someone else is rude to me because of them, then I know right away thatâs not someone I want in my life. People like to think theyâre better than other people for stupid reasons sometimes.â
âLike if theyâre fancy or not?â Lola asks, and Leo gives her a fond smile and nod.
âLike if theyâre fancy or not.â
Leoâs not sure if Lola even remembers this, but he does. So when Lola, seventeen years old, standing in the kitchen, eating a ham and Easy Cheese sandwich after school, tells him that Charlotte, the girl in her art class, Tommy-from-the-partyâs cousin, complimented her jacket, the pin-and-patch-covered, black, denim, proto-crust-punk, heirloom heâd loaned to her since sheâd asked to wear it when starting a new school, and had barely gone a day without it, he can read into her smile even when itâs hidden behind her sandwich.
âSounds like she has good taste,â Leo leans his hip against the counter top, legs feeling the warmth of the oven where heâs got a loaf of herb and garlic bread baking away.Â
Lola spends a full twenty minutes enthusing about Charlotteâs taste in music, eyes bright and tone animated. He only interrupts her to hand her a packet of prosciutto and a bundle of asparagus, so she could help him prepare for dinner, but it doesnât slow her down, hands working quickly, while Leo boiled potatoes and simmered some garlic in butter on a low heat.Â
Both Lola and Leo know why Lolaâs been so hesitant to make friends since moving, and she knows heâd never push her into friendship, but Lola also knows it hurts him to see her lonely.
âHey dad, Iâve been meaning to ask you,â Lola says after a long pause, finally taking a breath after sheâs finished recounting her day to him, âyou know Queen, right?â
âDo I know Queen?â Leo jokingly scoffed, âLola, Iâm the one who introduced you to Queen.â He reminded, and Lola gave a small smile, but her heart wasnât in it; she wasnât usually nervous, but talking about this sort of thing still made her heart race a little. Seeing her hesitant expression, Leoâs own softens, and he turns down the potatoes to turn his full attention to her, âwhat about Queen?â
âI didnât know Freddieâs sister was with the drummer,â Lola starts, fiddling with the final piece of asparagus. Sheâs quick to follow it up before she can chicken out, âand I didnât know... sheâs like Bowie, and Fred, and... and me, you know?â Lola finally wraps up the final vegetable and places it on the glass baking tray with the rest, before she looks to her father who was watching her pensively, hoping he understands what sheâs trying to say.
âThatâs little Rocket Mercury youâre talking about, isnât it?â He asked as a smile stretched across his lips, âI heard that about her, I always thought she was so cool, she worked on Spinal Tap, you remember I took you to see Spinal Tap a few months ago?âÂ
Lolaâs heart eases in her chest at his words, his warmth, the way he seems to reflect positively on the news. While Lola knew she didnât have anything to worry about, since the whole reason Leo had taken her and moved across the country was her motherâs less-than-kind reaction to the news of Lola dating a girl, the memory of it all still made her nervous.
Leoâs entire face lights up, and he makes a loud exclamation, like suddenly remembering some vital information, snapping Lola out of her dwelling.
âHow have I never played you any Dusty Springfield?â He announces, picking up the glass tray from the table and placing it to the side, âIâve got some of her records in my collection,â the oven timer goes off and he asks Lola to watch the potatoes so they donât overboil while he takes out the bread and puts the asparagus in, âDustyâs like you too; sheâs a pop-star from the sixties, lovely voice, told the Evening Standard she liked girls and boys all the way back in nineteen-seventy.â He says as he sets the timer for the asparagus, and Lola wraps her arms around him from behind, if only to hide how wide sheâs smiling.
âShe pretty?â Lola asked, grinning against his soft, woolen sweater. Leo gently pet her hands where they were wrapped around his middle, giving a warm laugh.
âVery; itâs no wonder girls and boys liked her too.â
Lola had never seen her father flinch in the face of change, and for that she would always be grateful for him. The only time sheâd ever seen him lose his cool was when heâd come to her defense against her motherâs bigotted views; apart from that, sheâd never known anyone more willing to go with the flow.
Take last week, for instance, Mick had taken Saturday off from the gas station to go look at the fixture Lola had mentioned not seemingly connected to anything. Leo had finally had the red and white, checkered floor installed earlier that week, and the booths had been reupholstered over Thursday and Friday in a shiny, inviting, deep peach, to compliment the warm aesthetic completed by the pleasantly sunny walls.Â
One of the many things about Lola is that she know when people look at her father, they never expect him to be the embodiment of sunshine; six-foot-something, built like a tank from doing a majority of the manual labor around his diners on his own. His traditional, Hawaiian tattoos were on full display today, across his chest, arms, and legs, wearing a singlet and shorts despite it being the middle of winter, after spending all morning hauling an industrial freezer into the kitchen, with what little help Lola could offer. He wears his long, wavy black hair in a ponytail down his back; the only thing that ever betrayed the warmth of his personality was the crows feet by his eyes, the laugh lines around his mouth, and the kindness in his eyes themselves.
Leo Fields, teddy-bear in the body of a GI Joe, took one look at Mick Mars, the weary, rather scrawny teenager with barely any face visible for his long, shaggy, dyed black hair, and gave him a bright smile, ushering him inside. He introduces himself, and immediate asks what kind of music Mick listened to.
âI fucking hate Kiss,â Mick had said immediately, knee-jerk hostility, the way he was shifting his weight from one foot to the other being the only giveaway to how intimidated he felt.
âThey can be a lot some times,â Leo had shrugged, gesturing to the jukebox, âIâve already put a few of my favourites in, you wanna see if anything catches your eye?â Mick moves quietly, as if afraid to make a noise, even stepping in combat boots he barely makes a sound, and Leo makes mention that heâs going to freshen up, and that Lola knows what switch needs to be looked at.Â
âHendrix?â Mick says with a hint of pleased surprise, right before Leo leaves, and Lolaâs father gives a nod.
âPut it on, man, turn it up loud; itâs Electric Ladyland in there, right?â And at Leoâs question, Mick nods. Leo gives a delighted thumbs up, and heads upstairs to the flat above the diner.
âThatâs your dad?â Mick asks, voice low after Leoâs disappeared, hitting play on the Jimi Hendrix record. Lolaâs sitting on the counter, swinging her legs; she knows looks like him, same face, same long, dark hair, same copper complexion, itâs usually the staggering difference in their respective physicalities that seemed to trip people up, so his confusion wasnât a surprise.
âThatâs my dad,â Lola agrees, with a slight nod, looking around the warm and inviting diner that still smelled like new vinyl from the seats. Sheâd light a candle or two later.Â
Lola knows the rumours going around town about the diner, about how itâs owner was a chef, about how itâs hopefully going to serve better food than the last owners, but also how everyone knew very little about the new owner beyond that. It made her giddy, like she had a secret, to know that her father was capable of blowing their expectations out of the water with his food alone. Back in Salem, Leoâs was known for restaurant-quality food at, well, diner prices. All the fries were hand cut, there was always home made pie or slice or cookies on sale, the beef patties were made with real mince and mixed with Leoâs special blend of herbs and spices, and fish was delivered fresh, daily.Â
Lola knew her father knew what it was like to be discriminated against based on his looks, and how hard heâd fought to prove his skills as a chef, so in turn, he hired based on attitude and experience, and trying to give those who may not have had a fair shot an opportunity. Leo had always paid well, treated his workers with kindness, and tried to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. The diner had only ever made a modest profit, despite itâs popularity, but it had never been about the money for her father.
Back at Lolaâs old high school, if you were popular, you looked for a job at the mall, but if you were an outcast, a loner, or a stoner, you applied for Leoâs; her dad had the ability to bring out the best in people, no-one wanted to disappoint Leo.
Her dad would never go anything as gauche as brag, but he has always prided himself on the quality of his diner and his food, glad to be putting his years of training and experience to use for people whoâs appreciate it.Â
Mick clears his throat, snapping Lola out of her thoughts.
âLight switch?â
Mick thinks the switch probably connected to an exhaust fan the previous owner had removed, which baffled both Lola and Leo, seeing as how theyâd had several exhaust fans installed, and the idea that this place had itâs one removed is unthinkable; how had they ever gotten the smell out?
After, Leo invites Mick up to have a look through his record collection, to recommend some for the jukebox, while he attempted a maple and walnut soufflĂ©.Â
The moment Mick mentions he wants to join a band, Leo lights up, peppers him with questions, what type of music he likes to play, his influences, what type of band heâd like to form. Seemingly unused to the overwhelming interest and positivity regarding his aspirations, Mick is almost startled into being forthcoming, and quickly warms to Lolaâs dad.
While the soufflĂ©âs in the oven, the three of them sit on the roof and smoke, while Leo reminisces about seeing Cream live, a few months after Lola was born, and how heâd swaddled her in his concert shirt, only for her to take a liking to it, and had used it as a blanket up until she started daycare. At hearing this, Lola ducks her head to hide her smile, knowing she still had that shirt, though it was more hole than shirt at this point, hanging in her cupboard.Â
Occasionally, when she looks to him, Lola sees Mick regarding her with confusion, and okay, maybe she can understand why; he knows her to be reserved and dry, but with Leo, sheâs outgoing and talkative and smiles so wide he can see her teeth. Thereâs barely a hint of her aloof façade around her father, and as Mick spends more time with him, itâs clear he can see why.
âMickâs cool,â Leo announces with a grin when Mick himself has left, putting foil over the leftover soufflĂ© for later, while Lola washes the few dishes and is more than happy to agree with him.
They spend Sunday decorating the diner, making it look less sparse with photos and hanging and various bits of music and pop culture memorabilia, while the jukebox blared rock and roll. A few people pass by in time to see Lola and Leo in an air guitar competition, but neither of them really care. Leoâs looks more like home by the time the sun goes down.Â
there will always be someone better than you. but on the bright side, who cares?
Eileen sits next to her in AP French during the entire last week of school for the semester. Everything she does seems so perfectly calculated, this change in seating included, but she refuses to acknowledge it. Heather clicks her tongue, clearly annoyed that Eileen had taken the seat she had previously vacated the day Lola staked her own next to it, and judging by Eileenâs innocent little smile, that alone made it worth it.
Lola tries not to pay too much attention to Heather, pretty, mean, and popular, almost the exact stereotype Lola had assumed Charlotte to be before sheâd actually befriended her. They only have French together, but Heather keeps watching her, Lola sees it out of the corner of her eye, but her glare has become more speculative, more thoughtful as the weeks have passed, and Lolaâs not quite sure what to make of it. Whatever scathing personal attack Heatherâs probably working on is her business, she doesnât know shit about Lola, so Lola tries not to care.
Once Eileen sits next to Lola, the glare comes back in full force anyhow.
On Thursday, the last AP French lesson for the semester, Eileen offers Lola a stick of spearmint gum, and it feels kind of like a test. Lola takes the gum anyways, and Eileen smiles at her, surprisingly genuine.Â
âYouâre Charlotteâs friend,â Lola says, and Eileenâs smile widens.
âYouâre the girl who kissed her cousin,â she says. Lolaâs whole expression falls, mouth flattening into a thin, unamused line, ready to go on the defensive.Â
âAnd?â
Eileen shrugs, says nothing more on the subject, instead, glancing at Lolaâs hands.
âMy mom would kill me for wearing black nail polish, but it looks so cool on you,â She says, and Lola bites back a jaded response about her own mother, looking to her own hands, and the fresh and shiny coat of polished sheâd applied the night before.Â
âYour mom kind of sounds like an asshole, if black nail polish is enough to get her riled up,â Lola says, without even thinking about how harsh the words sounded, but once the words are out, she adds, âand I know from asshole moms,â for good measure. Internally, sheâs berating herself; if she talks about her mom, sheâs terrified that sheâs eventually going to answer questions about her mom, like where she was, and why Lola hates her.
âSheâs just a perfectionist, and I donât think black would suit me anyhow, so itâs not really an issue,â Eileen responds, as if she barely cares that Lola implied her mother was an asshole, and Lola lets herself relax a little, âIâm partial to a french tip,â Eileen holds out her hands to show her own manicure, the pale pink and white practically gleaming, obviously salon done.Â
âI coloured Tommyâs nails with sharpie,â Lola says while looking at Eileenâs elegant fingers, and Eileen actually huffs a laugh at that.
âI saw; heâs very proud of them.âÂ
Something in Lolaâs chest tightens at that; Charlotte seemed to be a good enough judge of character, and she liked Eileen well enough, so that, for now, was good enough for Lola.
Perhaps thatâs why Lola had taken so long to actually speak to Nikki Sixx, despite both Charlotte and Tommy being adamant theyâd get along, Charlotteâs proclamation that Nikki was kind of a tool held her back.
Itâs not that she doesnât know who he is; sheâs figured out the guy who sleeps through her English classes, is trying to make an acoustic guitar in shop, and who is part of her music classes - once sheâd decided to show up to those - is the same person sheâd seen on stage in leather pants back at the pub. The guy who Charlotte had yelled at. A tool. Apart from the week the rumours had started circulating about her, he never paid her much attention, so she never felt the need to introduce herself. If he was a tool, she could leave him well enough alone.
Until the first day of the Winter break, apparently. Though for the record, he was the one who spoke to her.
There were technically two music shops in the local mall, a ten minute walk from Lolaâs flat above the diner; sheâs glad to be close to the CBD, but it also means she canât justify asking her dad for a ride when it would take her less time to walk than it would for him to find parking.Â
But Monday, December 27th, was absolutely fucking freezing.Â
The mall itself is teeming with people looking to spend the money theyâd gotten over the holiday period, and the workers had already taken down the gaudy Christmas Tree that had sat in the middle of the food court.Â
Lola was there at her fatherâs behest, sticking up and handing out flyers announcing New Yearâs Day as Leoâs grand opening, and that they were hiring. She gives everyone at the food court a flyer, sticks up several in various locations, and thinks about heading back to the food court for a second round, to catch any newcomers, or anyone she may have missed, when she spots the music shops.
Bass and Treble were owned by the same people, however Treble seemed to be geared towards more classical music, with pianos and violins and flutes and all manor of orchestra-esque instruments available, while Bass seemed to be committed to rock and roll.Â
Nikki Sixx finds Lola crouched in front of the display of sheet music on sale in Bass.Â
âLola, right?â
Lola stands so fast at his voice that her head spins, but she tries not to let it show. Sheâs on alert when she looks at him, tense, already scowling, which only deepens when she sees who it is.
âNikki Sixx,â his name is not a question when it leaves her lips, but he seems pleased rather than concerned, that his reputation apparently preceded him. He nods, and looks over at what sheâd been examining.Â
âAnything good?â He asked, and Lola looks over her shoulder at the display. Sheâd been seriously considering a book of Elton Johnâs hits for piano before heâd come along.Â
âStill deciding; why?â
âNo reason,â he shrugged, taking his time to look nonchalantly at the various amps nearby, âyou look like youâd be into this sort of thing,â he notes, acting all smug and coy and weird; Lola rolled her eyes, but didnât answer.
âYou were at my gig, weâre you? Hanging out with that guy from the gas station, right? Mick?â Something about his tone had Lola on edge and defensive.
âYou guys were okay,â she says flatly, making it clear as she can that thatâs barely a compliment; Nikki, however, smile widely.
âGlowing review, Iâll add it to our poster,â he smirks, before he finally looks her over, gaze zeroing in on the flyers in her hands, âspeaking of -â and he snatches one, not that sheâs protesting, thatâs another one she doesnât have to get rid of. Nikkiâs reading the flyer and frowning, while Lola lets her attention wander to the various keyboards they have on display.
âWhereâs this?â Nikki pipes up, sounding genuinely interested, while Lolaâs idly playing scales with one hand on the closest, off keyboard.
âA few blocks away,â Lola still hasnât quite gotten the hang of the townâs geography, âacross the road from The Kings Hotel, where I saw you play -â
âThe old MacCready place?â
âItâs Leoâs now,â Lola says, arms crossed, sitting low in her hips as she regards Nikki, and the way heâs going over every little detail of the poster, âCharlotte says youâre a tool.â
âCharlotte just hates that she likes me so much,â Nikki doesnât even miss a beat before answering, and when he looks up to catch Lolaâs reaction, his grin is all teeth. Lola canât help the slight smile she wears as she takes in his response.
âI can see why,â Lolaâs not quite sure what sheâs going for with her own response, but it comes out more teasing than cutting, and thereâs something in Nikkiâs eye, or in his smile, or maybe itâs in his easy laughter, that has her heart beating weird in her chest.
A moment passes between them, a shift in the tone, the energy of the interaction as Lola drops her immediate hostility; sheâs been doing that a lot lately, but she tries not to dwell on it. Itâs now she gets a proper look at him, at his ripped jeans and all black, leather jacket, hair sprayed to high heavens like heâs about to join Poison; he looks unkempt and mean, and Lolaâs kind of really into it.
Theyâre checking each other out, sizing each other up, and they both seem to find something in the other they like, because Nikkiâs grinning at Lola when gaze meets hers again, and sheâs smirking right back.
âTake a picture, itâll last longer,â she tells him, hip cocked for a moment before she saunters past him, knocking into him with her shoulder purposefully. When Nikki stumbles back, he huffs a laugh, and Lola calls over her shoulder, âLeoâs is hiring by the way, Leo himself would probably love a fucker like you.â

Okay, I finally, FINALLY got around to watching Kimi no Na wa
I finished watching it just now so this is just an unorganized stream of thoughts in no particular order lol
(spoilers obviously, be warned)
I really liked it!
Watching Taki and Mitsuha trying to interact with each others' respective friends and just coming off as really weird in the process was really fun to watch.
And the songs were really good too. The end credits song, that's some good English pronunciation o.o
So going into the movie the two main spoilers I already knew about it (just from cultural osmosis from the internet) was that it involved the boy and the girl switching bodies and that the plot twist was that there was actually some kind of 3 year offset.
But also somehow for the like 5 years that this movie has been out I completely managed to avoid the spoiler about how the comet completely yeeted the town off the face of the planet.
like, WTF o.o
When I got to that part in the movie I was actually legit surprised. I was like "oh shit". "Oh shiiiiit". When I saw those "do not enter, keep out" signs, my heart just sank. Well... that explains why they didn't switch any more after that. That's a RIP -_-;;
Okay okay, other stuff.
The background art in this movie was GORGEOUS. So detailed and sharp looking. And the animation looked really good too. Not just the hype actiony moments but also the very subtle, minute movements as well. Very smooth etc. I'm not an animation expert so obviously my opinion probably doesn't mean very much but I think it looked good!
The town is called Itomori, ito means "thread" in Japanese, nice.
The rice + sake stuff felt kinda creepy, idk. Traditional ceremonies why are you like this
Mitsuha's younger sister has lots of entrepreneurial ideas huh.
Fortunately their phones don't have passcodes, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to use each others' phones.
And also the subs in that scene where Mitsuha-in-Taki's body was meeting his friends for the first time had a really clever way of translating the nuance of "watashi" vs. "watakushi" / "boku" / "ore", with phrases like "a girl like me" vs. "a guy like me". Noice.
Tokyo is expensive huh.
Also Taki's senpai is quite perceptive.
And Taki is quite a good artist o.o
The diaries are being corrupted and deleted? Well that's kinda sus
Okay but looking through the obituaries and seeing "Mitsuha, age 17" in there. That's horrifying.
When he woke up in her body again, but before the comet struck, that gave me Life Is Strange vibes. I love time travel stories.
But also these kids, how did they not notice that the year was completely different? Or that the days of the week didn't align with the day of the month? ehh I guess you can handwave it away with memory shenanigans (I mean, if it's during a dream, then your memory recall is pretty wonky anyway). But kids these days, not even looking aware of the full YYYY-MM-DD they're living in smh. Unobservant brats (I joke, I love them)
"You were the one within me" that... uh, that sounds kinda lewd >_<;; (I'm sorry, that's the first place my mind went, forgive me)
also RIP Tessie's bike
and also, Mitsuha's friends are the true MVPs. Sayaka has a very good convincing broadcaster voice. Also Tessie coming in clutch with the explosives know-how and the airwaves hijacking know-how. Committing acts of domestic terrorism just for their friend. Geez. This kind of trust and loyalty is rare. Treasure it.
Also when they were trying to remember each other's names I was like "WRITE IT DOWN BEFORE YOU FORGET" but then I was like "wait the comet can erase stuff even from digital phones, it can probably erase sharpie marks too, noooo" so then when he went to grab the sharpie to write her name and then forgot I was like "fuq u forgot"
Also holy wow, I REALLY need to get more exercise. If I were in this movie I would like, collapse over ded after like less than 1 minute of running because I am NOT in shape at all. These kids are the real MVPs, doing all that running o.o
Like how far away is that mysterious god's body shrine place from the rest of the town? When Taki-in-Mitsuha and her sister and grandma went to visit it, it was like an entire day's hike or something. And Taki-in-Mitsuha biked part of the way there and RAN the rest of the way and then Mitsuha ran all the way back and this was all after it got dark but before around 8pm or so. And they still had to convince Mitsuha's dad about the situation and they had to get everyone out of the town too. The timetable was SO TIGHT. Geez. It gives me anxiety just thinking about it.
Also, the town alert system! Tessie's knowledge about demolition stuff and liking of radio stuff! It was all foreshadowed/established near the beginning of the movie. Noice!
Anyway, the timeskip (I should really rewatch Weathering with You sometime so that I can actually catch all of the cameos this time lol).
Tessie and Saya got together, noice.
The end... ASDLKFJKLDSFJLAKSDFJ LKJSDAFKL J they finally
They were walking past each other up on the stairs, so I was worried! I mean, it makes sense! It's just some stranger, and you probably sound delusional talking about these weird dreams of yours that you don't even remember! Imagine if you're like "hey have we met somewhere before?" and they look at you like "dafaq?? weirdo"
I mean, that already happened with Mitsuha 8 years ago on that train. So I guess it's Taki's turn to call out this time. I'm glad he did.
Also you can't just leave me hanging there alksdjfkl;djl;akjsdf
pls I need to see them catch up with each other and try to reconstruct what happened and how they know each other from their fragmented memories and reminisce on mutually cringe memories and so on etc.
But all in all that was a pretty good movie! 9.3/10

round up // JANUARY 21
New year, not-so-new Crowd vs. Critic! Itâs another batch of films, TV, music, and reads that were new to me this month and think you would enjoy, too. As we cozy up inside for the winter, nothing warms you up like a good piece of pop culture.
January Crowd-Pleasers
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Does this sequel reach the heights of 2017âs Wonder Woman? No, but I wish more superhero movies were like this one. I explain why at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
21 Bridges (2019)
A solid action crime thriller with a solid Chadwick Boseman at the center. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10
The Lethal Weapon Series (1987-98)
I watched the first Lethal Weapon in 2017 for ZekeFilm, but now Iâve a decadeâs pleasure of progressively over-the-top action sequences and progressively more absurd ways to destroy Roger Murtaughâs (Danny Glover) house. The Murtaugh/Riggs bromance holds this progressively sillier series together, and an supporting cast of charismatic actors (Jet Li, Darlene Love, Chris Rock, Rene Russo) are game for whatever comes their way. Joe Pesci is the true MVP. Series Crowd: 9/10 // Series Critic: 7/10
The High Note (2020)
Tracee Ellis Rossâs Grace Davis is a diva in every sense of the word. A high-strung and highly successful singer, sheâs also highly demanding of her assistant Maggie (Dakota Johnson), who wants to step out of her shadow and become a music producer. This rom-com-adjacent flick is one of the most fun escapes Iâve had from a 2020 movie, and itâs perfect for a girlsâ night in. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
Double FeatureâRom-Coms With a Magical Twist: Just My Luck (2006) + When In Rome (2010)
Disclaimer: These movies are not good. In fact, theyâre junk, but theyâre my kind of junk. In Just My Luck (Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 6/10), Lindsay Lohan loses her life-long lucky streak when she kisses schlimazel Chris Pine. And When in Rome (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 6/10), Kristen Bell attracts unwanted admirers (Will Arnett, Danny DeVito, Josh Duhamel, Jon Heder, and real-life future husband Dax Shepard) after she steals their coins from a wishing fountain. To their credit, both of these movies know theyâre silly, which means you have permission to just sit back and laugh along with (or, honestly, at) them.
WandaVision (2021)
I sometimes fear for the world of entertainment when I think of how much intellectual property Disney has gobbled up, but WandaVision is evidence the company is a benevolent dictator at least for now. This odd delight is a send up and a tribute to sitcoms like I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Brady Bunch, and Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen are so charming and weird I donât need whatever mysterious sub-plot theyâre building.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)
If you want to make the most of watching Robin Hood: Men in Tights, first watch Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), an action flick I saw last February and didnât include in my monthly Round Up. This Mel Brooks spoof is a direct response that self-serious Kevin Costner adventure, even down to copying its costumes. While I wish I could find a Mel Brooks comedy with any substantial female character (in every movie Iâve seen so far, the joke is either, âSheâs got a great rack!â or âWow, sheâs an uggo!â), I still couldnât stop laughing at this 104-minute version of the Robin Hood scene in Shrek. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10
Aliens (1986)
Peak â80s action. Peak alien grossness. Peak girl boss Sigourney Weaver. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/.510
Big (1988)
After talking about Laverne & Shirley with Kyla on SO ITâS A SHOW?, I had to check out Penny Marshallâs classic. While a few moments havenât aged so well, its heart is sweet and the script is hilarious. And that Tom Hanks? I think heâs going places. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
Unstoppable (2010)
Iâve laughed at SNLâs spoof of this movie for a decade, so itâs about time I got around to enjoying this action thriller very loosely based on the true story of a train that got away from its conductor. Denzel Washington (âYouâre too old!â) and Chris Pine (âYouâre too young!â) are our heroes in this over-the-top ridiculousness, and their chemistry is so extra it makes me hope they team up for another movie again. Crowd: Â 9/10 // Critic: 7/10
January Critic Picks
Double Featureââ90s Space Adventures: Apollo 13 (1995) + Contact (1997)
I have no desire to join Tom Cruise as he films in space, but I know Iâll be pumped to watch whatever he makes because I love sci-fi and space adventures. Apollo 13 (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10) tells the story of an almost-disastrous NASA mission in the â60s, and it taps into our hope for the human spirit to overcome obstacles. Contact (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10) surmises what might happen if we received communication from extraterrestrial life, and it taps into our struggle to reconcile faith and science.
McCartney III by Paul McCartney (2020)
I spent January catching up on the albums on Best of 2020 lists, and the one I listened to for hours and hours was Paul McCartneyâs latest solo album. Catchy, thoughtful, and musically surprising, it ranges from pop to rock to folk in 45 minutes and still feels like itâs over too soon. Like Tom Hanks, this Paul McCartney guy is going places!
The Thin Man Series (1934-47)
Like Lethal Weapon, I watched the first installment of The Thin Man awhile back, and Kyla and I even covered the series on our podcast. But thanks to a full series marathon on TCM earlier this month, Iâve now laughed through all five. When you talk about great chemistry, youâve got to talk about William Powell and Myrna Loy, who make Nick and Noraâs marriage feel lived in and romantic as they solve crimes together. Witty, suspenseful, and jaunty, this series is still sexy cool over 80 years later. (Also, Asta? Still one of the cutest dogs in cinema.) Series Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
The King and I (1956)
Hereâs your regularly scheduled reminder Hollywood works differently now, and many casting decisions of the â50s wouldnât fly today. What has aged well in this film: The Rodgers and Hammerstein music and the sumptuous costumes and set design. I love extravagant musicals of yesteryearâperhaps itâs time for Hollywood to revisit and remake The King and I for modern audiences?

Inauguration Day
In a year with no major televised events with celebrities in a room together, Inauguration Day felt like the most exciting cultural event in ages. Weâve been missing major fashion, but then we got Lady Gaga! Weâve been missing live performances, but then we got Amanda Gorman! And I got a lot of tears during that poemânot just me, right?

Remember when I said I was just a few movies away from becoming an Agatha Christie junkie? Well, I think Iâm there because I canât stop with the murder mysteries! Margaret Rutherford is a treasure whether sheâs solving a murder at a horse ranch or on a boat, and a cast of colorful supporting characters (including Rutherfordâs husband) makes these breezy instead of heavy. 8œ (1963)
File this with 2001: A Space OdysseyâI donât know if I really understood this film, but I think I liked it? Federico Felliniâs surrealist, male gaze-y drama blurs the lines between reality and imagination, love and dysfunction, and the past and maybe some future that involves clowns? What resonated with me was the story of a director with creative block, wondering if heâs already peaked and if heâll create anything worthwhile again. Crowd: 6/10 // Critic: 9/10
Sense and Sensibility: The Screenplay and Diaries by Emma Thompson (1995)
Sense and Sensibility is not just one of my favorite Jane Austen adaptationsâitâs one of my all-time favorite films. One of the co-hosts of one of my favorite podcasts has raved many-a-time about Emma Thompsonâs journals from the making of film, so it was only a matter of time before I read them myself. Witty, informative, and all-around lovely, Thompsonâs journals are an excellent insight into the filmmaking process and how novels are adapted.
Also in JanuaryâŠ
I reviewed the new-ish documentary Flannery for ZekeFilm, which is all about the writer Flannery OâConnor and feels a little like going back to high school English class.
In addition to the Lethal Weapon and Thin Man series, I rewatched all of the X-Men series this month. You can see everything I am watching on Letterboxd, including favorites I love returning to (i.e. X-Men: Days of Future Past) and the movies I try that donât make my monthly recommendations (i.e. The Wolverine).

14 Long Fic Recs
I've been mostly a fandom lurker for the past five months (since the Game of Thrones Series Finale). Since then I've been reading some of the best fanfiction I've ever read. I've been a part of some very small fandoms before and can say the J/B fandom is lucky to have many very talented writers. I wanted to make a list of my favorite stories so far for J/B Week, but life... so here it is now. Iâll try to be brief (I anticipate I am going to fail at this) and not spoil the stories.
These are all stories with more than 14k words (up to 190k). The division between short and long fics is a bit arbitrary but necessary due to the length of this list. I am sure there are better ways to classify these stories that I may get around to later on.
Sorry in advance for the overuse of words such as beautiful, perfect and spectacular, the Jaime/Brienne fandom writers are that good. Also, English is not my first language, so sorry for any mistakes.
Iâve tagged the authors whose handles on Tumblr I know. If you wish to have your tag removed or added (Iâd love to follow you!), let me know.
You can find a short fic rec list here.
Diplomacy by Gwen77Â
As I'm sure youâll be able to tell by the end of this list, arranged marriage stories are some of my favorites. If I remember correctly, this was the first J/B story I read and I have revisited it quite a few times since. This story has Jaime and Brienne dealing first-hand with Cersei and jealous Brienne, in addition to being wonderfully written. In fact, everything written by Gwen77 is a piece of art.
In This Light by SigilBroken @chickren
Look. I can't even... This story has everything you could ever ask for. This is one of my favorite pieces of writing ever. This is THE Game of Thrones Endgame for me. The scale and description of the long night surpass that of the show by a very wide margin. The storytelling is spectacular with subtle details buried in each chapter that make a re-read 100% enjoyable. The story is completely faithful to Jaime and Brienne as characters and the depth of their bond is exquisitely explored. It also works wonderfully as an ensemble story with memorable moments for Cersei, Myrcella, Tommen, Stannis, Shireen, Sansa...Â
Honor Thy Regard by SigilBroken @chickren
This is another wonderful Post ADWD story by the wonderful SigilBroken. This is (I believe) a more intimate story (if that makes any sense) than In This Light. The dialogue in this is fantastic, there are many, many scenes that simply stay with you, the melancholic tone throughout the story is enrapturing and the ending never fails to make me cry and (mini-spoiler!) smile. The magnitude of the connection the author manages to forge between Jaime and Brienne and the way it's conveyed is unparalleled by any other story.
The Seven Bind Their Fate by RoseHeart
This is another epic story. This is a canon divergent story in which Jaime meets Brienne in Renly's camp. It's really amazing how much with that apparently âlittleâ change from canon, RoseHeart manages to create such an original and well-paced story. Jaime being there for the bet, the meele and Renly's death is extremely entertaining to read. And gods! the Red Wedding re-imagined in this verse is FANTASTIC.
Beauty and the Beast by SigilBroken @chickren
Another story by SigilBroken so you know it is GOOD. This is very different from the authorâs other two stories. Maybe itâs the fact that this story is a Modern AU or the fact that everything that happens in this story feels so relatable, but the exploration of Jaime and Brienne in this story, their fears and ambitions feel very authentic. Also, I love angry, intense and protective-of-Brienne!Jaime (be it of others or of her own feelings of insecurity) and Beauty and the Beast has one of my favorite scenes depicting this. Seriously, if you do not have a reaction similar to that of Ellaria Sand when you read this story, you are way more immune to Jaime than I am.Â
The Gentlest Schism by SandwichesYumYum
This story is not concluded and the last update is from 2014, but listen: YOU HAVE TO READ IT. If you think you know what UST is, wait till you read this story (and itâs definitely not in the way you expect). This story reads like an ode to Jamie and specially Brienne as individuals but also to the pure, caring connection between them. SandwichesYumYumâs Jamie and Brienne know each other to their very cores, have carried each other through their very worst and are also capable of laughing with each other. The world-building in this story is fantastic and the original characters are the best Iâve read in fanfiction. The place where the author left the story is not a cliff-hanger but instead a satisfying point in our favorite characters' lives.
Where I follow, you'll go by Lady_in_Red @ladyinredfics
Am I recommending another Arranged Marriage/Marriage of Convenience story? Apparently yes. This story has some great Aunt Genna and Tywin appearances and, like everything written by Lady_in_Red, has amazing pacing and is beautifully written. The push and pull between Brienne and Jaime, the slow build of intimacy and trust in their feelings... itâs all perfect. You should actually go ahead and browse through all of Lady_in_Redâs fics. They have one the most extensive and varied collection of stories Iâve seen and they are all truly amazing.Â
Bargains by Gwen77
This is an arranged marriage story in a Regency-era Westeros. Itâs one of those stories where you want to scream at your screen âJust kiss already!!â. It takes them both a while to realize their feelings for each other and even longer to acknowledge them out loud. Jaime is still infatuated with Cersei for a good part of this story, so if thatâs not your cup of tea...Â
Pretty by astolat @astolat
Everything by astolat in the Game of Thrones works is FAN-TAS-TIC and all ten stories are very worth reading but this one is my favorite. This is a canon divergent story starting in Season 4. It has wonderful appearances by Tywin, Olenna, Tommen, and Sansa. Jamie and Brienne in Kingâs Landing is something I always enjoy. Protective Jamie, Badass Brienne, and Crazy Cersei. Itâs quite perfect.
Madonna of the Balcony by QuizzicalQuinnia @quizzicalquinnia
This is fic reads like poetry. Itâs really hard to describe how lyrical and evocative the writing in this piece is. In this story, Jaime is a sculptor and Brienne becomes his muse. I love that this is a sort of reverse story in which Jaime is immediately infatuated by Brienne and we get to see his journey from longing for Brienne the muse to loving Brienne the woman. Also, Jaimeâs beautiful, beautiful descriptions of art make me crave a visit to the Louvre or the Rodin Museum.
A Dance with Ice and Fire by ShirleyAnn66
This is a canon continuation and it is EPIC. If youâre looking for an ending for Game of Thrones as a series with satisfying resolutions for most characters and storylines, centered around Jamie, Brienne, their individual growths and their connection to each other: THIS IS IT. This story has one of my favorite takes on Jaime ever. Other characters like Tyrion and especially Cersei are beautifully interpreted. Also, the intimate interactions between Jaime and Brienne felt really true to their characters. If youâre still not convinced: youâll get to read (at least) four different Jaime/Brienne weddings.
Battle is the Great Redeemer by Lady_in_Red @ladyinredfics
It looks like Lady_in_Red is an MVP on both this list and the short fic rec list. This is a show fix-it and it does Jaime so, so much justice. Itâs incredibly well-plotted and keeps you biting your nails from beginning to end. There is not one dull moment in this story. It has some fantastic Jaime/Arya interactions. Bran and The Hound also have some stellar moments in this. I think this story ties pretty much every loose end in the show (and as we know there are quite a few).
Everyone Has Secrets by ellaria @khaleesiofwine
This story is based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The story revisits many of canon events in a modern setting where Jaime is a disgraced journalist and Brienne is a motorcycle-riding computer hacker. They join forces to investigate the disappearance of Sansa Stark. The Red Wedding, Ramsay's sadism and the trafficking of women are all very jarring to explore in this modern setting and the author handled it perfectly. This version of Brienne owns my heart. She is exquisitely crafted, from her backstory to her use of her helmet and motorcycle as armor, to her determination to use her "powers" to fix the world and bring Sansa home.
Weekend at Casterly by green_light
Weekend at Castely is a very recent discovery. It is a true romantic masterpiece set in a near-Regency era. Here we have a combination of possessive!Jaime and feels-unworthy-of-Brienne!Jaime that is one for the ages. This story is perfectly crafted. The dialog is quick and funny and the characterizations are masterful. The confrontation of feelings between Jaime and Brienne is some Pride&Prejudice level drama. Also, it has a beautiful, beautiful resolution between Jaime and Tyrion.

MVP of Horror: Rachel True reflects on her experience as the only Black star of 'The Craft'
Rachel True is the first to tell you that she wasnât supposed to be in The Craft. When the script for the 1996 Goth horror favorite first made the rounds in Hollywood, there were several obstacles that stood in the way of her joining a cast that included rising stars Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell and Robin Tunney. âI had to fight to read for it,â True tells Yahoo Entertainment now. âMy agents at the time were like, âYouâre probably too old.ââ (Watch our video interview above.)
Not only that, but the role that True auditioned for â Rochelle Zimmerman, one of four teen girls at a Catholic high school who form a Manon-worshipping witchâs coven â was written for a white actress. Undaunted, she relied on âsmoke and mirrorsâ to get into the room and ultimately won the part, setting a new precedent for teen movies in the process. âItâs a big movie in terms of my career, but itâs also a big movie for Black people out there,â she says. âItâs one of the first teen movies that wasnât a Black teen movie or a white teen movie.â
The obstacles didnât end after True landed the role. If anything, they intensified during and after production as the actress felt herself being marginalized in favor of her co-stars. True makes it clear that she didnât experience any overt hostility from the rest of the cast; instead, it was the studio and people behind the camera who seemed intent on holding her back. âWhen we were shooting the movie, I had literally been told by my team to stay away from Fairuza,â she remembers. â[They said] she can get away with stuff, and you will get fired for it. I was literally told, âYouâre Black, so donât say, âF*** you, mommy,â like the white girls.ââ
She also had to fight for equal attention during the filmâs publicity tour. âThey put up a poster of the four of us, mentioned the three girls and then skipped down the call sheet, I think, âThis is how Black actors get underpaid, this is how they get forgotten, and itâs part of why I mouthed off about the publicity back in the day that I was excluded from. At the time, I donât think my castmates understood; they were like, âYouâre not as famous as us.â What they didnât get is that in the early to mid-1990s, [the studios] excluded the Black person, which meant they were never going to be as famous as you because they didnât get the press.â
True experienced that exclusion as recently as last year, when she took to Twitter to reveal how a fan convention declined to invite her to a planned Craft reunion featuring Balk, Campbell and Tunney. (The actress credits Balk, now a close friend, with tipping her off about being left out.) âI had my guy call them up and say, âYou could have the first reunion since 1996 with all the ladies, and they were like, âNo thanks,ââ she says. âMy thing is that everything in life comes down to money, and if you donât want the money [from a cast reunion] then as a Black person, what else am I supposed to think?â
After her tweets went viral, the convention reversed course and the full Craft coven reunited in March 2019. âIâm glad I spoke up,â True says. âHopefully it opens the door for other people, so that when I go to the conventions it's not just me and maybe one other Black person.â
Racism is a subject within The Craft as well. As originally written, Rochelle struggled with bulimia, but the filmâs co-writer/director, Andrew Fleming, revamped that storyline after True was cast. In the finished film, the characterâs antagonist is Christine Taylorâs Laura Lizzie, a high school mean girl with a special hate-on for Rochelle. âFirst of all, Christine Taylor is so nice,â True says, laughing. âPeople come up to me and say, âWas she really racist?â And Iâm like, âSheâs the sweetest woman in the world!â I had gone to an all-white public school, so it was a great way to exorcise those demons if you will. It wasn't the first time someone called my hair pubic hair â that's the truth. So to have that in the movie was fitting, I think, as far as how people think.â
During filming, True remembers being uncomfortable with the way Fleming used her skin color as a plot point. âI remember thinking, âDo they see Blackness as a problem?â All the characters have issues, and to me being Black wasnât an issue; the way other people treat me for being Black is the issue. But once I really thought about when I got older, I realized itâs a good thing they have that in there. Weâd come out of a time where we had things like The Cosby Show where nobody ever mentioned racism, and here was a movie that tackled it head on. I do think itâs interesting, though, that the other three characters never say anything about it! Not one of them is ever like, âThatâs too bad that sheâs racist towards you.â I donât think they would do that today.â
One other story choice that still rankles her a quarter century later is that Rochelle loses her supernatural powers at the end of the movie, while Tunneyâs Sarah keeps hers. âEven in the mid-â90s they knew they couldnât kill off the Black chick,â she jokes. âBut I was like, âRochelle is more powerful than this! Sheâs an astral bridge, why is she cowering?â Thatâs actually how I felt about that scene.â
Those memories are balanced out by the fun that True had making The Craft, whether it was flying around on harnesses or having a plaster mold made of her face for certain special effects sequences. âI loved all that stuff â I love movie magic. It's why I love being an actor because you put on this character and you get to experience life! I knew there was a lot for me to learn; Fairuza gave me a really good tip, because she was more experienced than I was. For the scene where we licked blood off our fingers, I kind of deep-throated my finger and she told me, âRachel, itâs film and itâs a close-up. Just a small lick will do.â So she might not have been the friendliest when we were shooting, but she was there to make a great movie. And she makes the movie, right? Sheâs so intense and fabulous in it.â
True shares other stories about the making of The Craft, as well as tales from her eventful life and career, in True Heart Intuitive Tarot, a boxed set that includes a tarot deck and a guidebook thatâs part memoir and part tutorial. âItâs helped me with my career in Hollywood, a town full of smoke and mirrors,â True says of her lifelong interest in tarot. âI use tarot as a therapist â like a shrink in a box I like to say â so that I understand what Iâm upset about or whatâs going on.â
And with the True Heart book and deck, sheâs hoping to instruct other people on mastering the art of reading tarot cards. âPeople hit me up on my DMs, saying, âCan I get a reading from you?â And Iâm like, âNo, you canât afford me!ââ she laughs, adding that sheâs mostly retired from doing public and private readings. âThe idea with the book is that you can learn it for yourself... and you can heal yourself.â
The Craft is available to stream on Hulu or rent or our purchase on Amazon, iTunes and FandangoNOW. True Heart Intuitive Tarot is available on Amazon.

Favorite clips of s5
Thank you so much @smblmnâ for tagging me, I love the idea! While the season as a whole was kinda underwhelming, it was full of amazing clips and I do have a lot of favorites. Hereâs my top 10 and a few honorable mentions. I tend to have one favorite clip by episode, except for episode 8, which I REALLY didn't like. I didn't rank my picks, I'll just list them chronologically.
And since I didn't have the opportunity this season, I'm also making gifs to illustrate my picks :) I need the practice, as you can see.
Ep.1: Samedi 0:25 - Le choc
One of my favorite things this season has been the symbolism and the metaphors around sound and silence. In the first episode, there were 2 occurrences: Arthur seeing Noée for the first time underwater at the pool and him looking in the street as snow falls and slowly realizing he's gone deaf. I thought this was an amazing idea and that it gave disability more depth and beauty.
And that look at the camera in the last seconds⊠And the piano music⊠It was so chilling.
Ep. 2: Jeudi 20:59 - La nuit de
Globally, the scenes at the association were my favorites, even though I have a complicated relationship with them. Before shooting started in October, someone from the crew promised they would invite me on set during the filming of these scenes, but they ended up breaking their promise. I try to be as drama free as possible on the internet so I didnât talk about it publicly but now that the season has ended Iâm like âWhy should I bottle this up, Iâm not the the one who screwed up and Iâm still hurt about itâ.
The first time I watched that clip in January, I was heartbroken. Not just because of the missed opportunity but because I realised I never got to experience what Arthur did; there was no association for me, no one. But I still have a really soft spot for this scene because it's just gorgeous. The aesthetic is incredible and I totally understand what Arthur feels (minus the alcohol). Overall, as bittersweet as it is, it's probably one of my top 3 scenes this season (and it looks like it's one of David's too, this man has great taste). I canât help but feel for the teenager I was and I wonder how I would have felt watching it then.
Ep.3: Vendredi 13:12 - Check de frérot
Arthur and Basile's friendship was one of the highlights of this season, heck Basile WAS the highlight of this season. Basile and Arthur never shy away from hugs and I'm living for it. I'm so looking forward to see more of Basile in season 6 (since I guess we'll see more of his relationship with Daphné). I loved seeing him be so well-intentioned, despite his usual clumsiness. Seeing Paul in a more serious register (for instance when Arthur lashed out at the boys in episode 6) was delightful.
Ep 4.: Lundi 19:02 - Les entendants
This one also belongs in my top 3. This is the representation I was looking for when I learned Skam France would tackle hearing loss and deafness. It doesn't come in the same package for everybody, and I love that they tried to show it through so many different characters. The situations described here are universal among deaf people.
On a more personal note, I loved that the extras were actual deaf people and sone of them well known. The lady interpreting is Jennifer Lesage-David, co-director at IVT, and she helped David and Niels a lot this season. And the girl speaking about her relationship with her dad is Lulu, she has a YouTube channel with her sister where they raise awareness about hearing loss. The instagram post that was published that day also featured a lot of people I more or less know.
Watching this clip was an experience in itself. I was attending a conference that night about deaf TV archives. The clip dropped 2 minutes before it started and I had to wait for it to end to finally watch. It was excruciating. Also, half the staff of IVT was there and I actually ended up watching the clip in front them. There were like "Wait? Jennifer was in Skam?".
Ep.4: Vendredi 20:43 - Ma vie a changé
While I'm still sceptical about Noée falling in love with Arthur so quickly (this sign song is unambiguous), I think this is one of the most beautiful scenes in the whole series. I don't care very much about this being romantically coded, I just choose to focus on the sign song, because I'm so happy they featured deaf visual arts.
My friend and I spent hours trying to decipher what the song could be about and our interpretation differed a lot from Winona's original text but we loved doing this. David was curious to see how my friend would understand it (especially the part where Noée signs a growing love which she cradles) and he was so happy when she understood it right.
For those interested, hereâs what we interpreted (roughly translated into English):
Like two souls lost in the storm, Swayed by the tide, Never really seeing each other Until ours eyes meet. Something is growing inside me, something new, That sets my heart beating. You take off my mask and the truth in your eyes, Fills my heart. Look at me, I also see you.
Ep.6: Mercredi 18:31 - Un simple bout de métal
Also one of the scenes I was expecting the most this season, especially when it transpired that Noée was a bit radical. Her letter echoes my own fears and I thought it was really on point. Arthur admitting he needs her made my heart melt, he's so lucky to have met her. And Winona was amazing in that clip.
Ep.7: Vendredi 20:31 - Sourd dating
Just like for "Un simple bout de metal", I was also expecting that scene. I like that they made NoĂ©e and Camille voice their opinion like both faces of the same coin. It was a great way to address cochlear implants as they're a sensitive topic in the deaf community. I think this is one of the most shining example of the research work they did. They could have just stopped at NoĂ©eâs letter. But since they had deaf actors like Lucas, who is also implanted and has faced prejudices from radical Deaf people in the past, they had to show implants were not evil and that the situation was more complex than just âDoctors who want to act as godsâ.
Learning NoĂ©eâs backstory was also interesting, although I didnât expect her to be an "ex-implanted" deaf. She explains that she learned sign language at the association, which can't be more than 3-4 years ago (and if you look closely in ep 3, when Arthur checks the website, she says she joined the association at its beginning), but there's no way NoĂ©e would have that proficiency in sign language in just 4 years of practice. Winona's fluency in sign language is clearly that of someone who grew up with it. I loved being able to notice these subtleties.
Like all the clips at the association, it was a joy to watch because of the atmosphere and the sign language. The deaf extras were lovely. I actually got to meet a few of them last month and had an amazing time with them.
Ep.9: Vendredi 20:17 - Choisir pour toi
Coline. singing. Do I need to say more? I like that both Noée and Alexia had their shining moment and as clumsy as the story got, I appreciate that the writers didn't try to pin one girl against the other and make one superior. Noée had her sign song and Alexia her own composition. And both were breathtaking. What really gets me in this scene are the colors. I'm a sucker for aesthetics.
And of course, it was great to see Alexia stand her ground and break up with Arthur. I have nothing but respect for her and I'm team Alexia + happiness all the way.
Ep.10: Lundi 10:04 - La mĂȘme vie que vous
When Melchior, Laura and the brochure subplot was introduced, I was a bit wary because their introduction scene was really, really awkward (it wasn't very well tied at first). By their second scene, at Arthur's place, I was sold. It was great to address accessibility and show that there's no point putting people with disabilities in the same bag, because there are hundreds of them and the needs are different. What doesn't change is our wish to live our life at the fullest, just like abled people. And this scene was precious. Seeing Arthur endorse this new part of him and support his peers was everything.
Ep.10: Vendredi 20:47 - Le meilleur des mondes
I'm still very emotional about this scene. Like⊠I don't know what to say, the music still sends shivers down my spine.
Honorable mentions :
Ep.1: Mardi 11:59 - 3, 2, 1,âŠ
One of the only things Robin told me about the season when I met him at IVT was that the first clip would drop on New Year's Eve at 11:59 p.m.. That date became a beacon during fall and oh you wouldn't believe how much I waited for that clip to drop and how much I was looking forward to it. And it freaking delivered. The atmosphere, the tense music, that first shot on the loudspeaker, the confetti clogging it gradually⊠That teaser was a masterpiece.
Ep.2: Like⊠the whole episode actually. The alarm clock concept was genius.
Ep.4: Samedi 10:15 - Nouveau style
One of these gorgeous clips without dialogues that still say lots.
Ep.5: Samedi 10:03 - MaĂźtriser le langage
Oh my, this one was so relatable and a joy to watch. Camille explaining that sign language and mimes are different, Arthur being that dimwit asking about swear words and being told off for speaking⊠Kuddos to the deaf extras who had to pretend they didn't know any sign language, it was so funny (looking at you, Enzo).
Ep.6: Samedi 8:30 - Mythos
Seeing Arthur lashing out at his friends was cathartic. He roasted them so well, I wished I had his ability to speak so well when I'm angry. A+ work.
Ep.6: Dimanche 14:41 - Envie de rien
Alexia being the real MVP, as always.
Ep.7: Samedi 2:15 - Pool Party
Itâs strange, because even though a lot of the story went down in this particular episode, it must be one of my favorites, like⊠tied with episode 2. It has probably a lot to do with the fact there were mostly deaf characters and that they had so much fun together. Itâs something I can relate do, the sheer joy of signing the night away, which is something I didnât get to experience until very recently.
As gorgeous as the underwater scene is, I'm not a fan of Noée and Arthur's almost kiss. I picked this scene because I love the moment of sheer joy that follows; everyone joining in the pool and having fun together. And of course the rise of Camika. I know it's a bit convoluted to have the two openly gay guys fall for each other first time they meet but⊠it just worked so well.
Ep.9: Mercredi 21:34 - FrĂšre
This clip was about to make the top 10 cut when I remembered about another one and I had to remove it. Just Basile being lovely Basile.
Ep.9: Jeudi 17:30 - T'es pas tout seul
This clip was so important, bless the nurse and bless JĂ©rĂŽme. I wish JĂ©rĂŽme was my audiologist, to be honest.
Ep.10: Samedi 13:39 - Maman
Arthur's mom was so lovely and I'm so sorry she had to go through this shit with her trashcan of a husband. I liked her relationship with her son and her reassuring him he's not like his father was very soothing. I wasnât the biggest fan of Arthur at the end of this season and I appreciate heâs well looked after after what he went through.
Ep.10: Jeudi 17:46 - Recommencer
Just like "Nouveau style" from ep 4, it's another one of these silent clips that has lots of meaning. Arthur putting back his glasses, slowly accepting his life won't be the same and that he has to move on. Except now things are clearer. Skam France love its symbolism and while sometimes it's very poorly done (like the love triangle emphasizing on Arthur's balancing between two worlds), more often than not it's very compelling.
Now I want to rewatch everything, so see you soon I guess :)

so this started out as just a general post about why i like cinderella adaptations, but slowly spiraled into a ranking/review of all the cinderella adaptations iâve seen in my short, young life. so strap in for possibly the longest post iâve ever made on this blog. (look, i never know how much i have to say about something until i really get going lmao)
idk why i like cinderella adaptations/remakes/spinoffs so much? most of them are garbage (especially the ones within the last 10 years donât @ me) but fuck it i like this brand of garbage. itâs fun to watch these movies and rework the bad plotlines and dialogue in my head as i go along.
i guess i like the source material and some of the aspects of all the different adaptations, but honestly i just like re-imagining them because thereâs only so much cringey script-written-for-teens-but-clearly-written-by-40-year-old-adults-who-have-no-idea-how-teens-or-even-people-for-that-matter-actually-talk-and-interact i can take in one excruciating sitting.
anyway hereâs my personal ranking of all the cinderella adaptations iâve seen that no one asked for. (not including stage productions because i havenât seen any and have no opinion of them. also not including into the woods because thatâs not just cinderella, but a spectacular amalgamation of fairytale mishap and shenanigan.) and reviews because apparently i had more to say than i originally thought when i first started constructing this list:
cinderella (1997) - the absolute best cinderella adaptation of all time, hands down, this is non-negotiable. this movie has it all: an excellent and diverse cast, gorgeous costume design, beautiful sets, some of the most dazzling dance numbers i ever witnessed when i first watched it at the wee age of 4, and a positive, progressive message that was accurate for its time yet also so ahead of its time. i cannot praise this version of cinderella enough, it is my all time favorite and one of my top 3 feel-good movies. if you watched it today, the effects might not be as magical compared to what we have now, but keep in mind it was released in 1997. anyway, the cast is truly amazing and so effortlessly inclusive (and honestly the fact that the prince was asian with a black mother and white father and they literally never addressed it was such a power move). i could go on about this movie forever (iâll probably make a whole post dedicated to it in the future) and what it meant to me and many others as young, impressionable poc. in conclusion, this movie set an exceedingly high standard for me and destroyed the chances of any other cinderella adaptation even hoping to live up to that. i love it! so! much!
ever after: a cinderella story (1998) - tbh i never saw this until i was in college but i immediately fell in love. i love the flow of the story as a whole - i never felt like anything was missing. i love the costumes and i especially love how danielle and henryâs relationship progressed throughout the film. slow-burn comes to mind when i watch their interactions and we all love a sweet, sweet slow-burn. itâs romance babes! itâs Dramatic in a few scenes and all i can say is that it really works because drew barrymoreâs performance is exceptional, fantastic, engaging, more adjectives to describe how enthralled by her i was. above all, her character is compassionate - she uses her voice to speak in support for those who are suppressed by the flawed government systems and law enforcers, and influences the prince to use his status and power to better his people who lack the privileges of the nobility. sheâs such a strong female lead (emotionally and physically - she literally fireman carries her love interest, who is taller than her and definitely exceeds her own bodyweight) and truly the mvp of this adaptation. watch it. watch it for Her.
enchanted (2007) - amy adams and idina menzel - ânuff said. okay but for real this one is so unique with its transition from classic d*sney 2D animation style to the real three-dimensional world and i adore it to the ends of the earth. the music? slaps! the story? slaps! the development of the main character? slaps!! sheâs so princess-y and d*sney cartoon-y and struggles in the real world, but she adapts at a good pace and i love that she learns to be realistic while also keeping hope and love close to her heart. also her mother figure / daughter figure bond with morgan is so so precious. the only constructive criticism i have for this movie is the fact that we were robbed of idina menzel singing!!! did they know all along she was destined to play the frozen queen years in the future and decided against her singing in this one?? is that it? ridiculous. itâs been over a decade and iâm still seething over this. other than that this movie is *chefâs kiss*
ella enchanted (2004) - anne hathawayâs back must still be hurting from carrying this film. (no shade to the other cast members, theyâre good, but anne is a queen and i forever love her.) this is another childhood favorite of mine. the story itself is a refreshing take - hats off to gail carson levine for the source material! iâve talked about the differences between the movie and book before in the midst of my reread of the book a few months ago, but i donât remember how much i focused on the movie. itâs so different from the book that it might as well be its own thing. on its own, the movie is pretty decent! again, mostly because of anne. itâs funny, itâs sad (especially that scene towards the beginning between ella and areida, iâm in stupid tears every time), and it gets weird but itâs a fun time. the chemistry between char and ella is so zesty i can feel it through the screen, i swoon over both of them. tbh i probably wouldnât like this movie so much if not for the fact that anne hathaway is truly talented and i spend most of my time watching it just looking at her.Â
cinderella 3: a twist in time (2007) - i genuinely enjoyed and appreciated how the characters were written in this one. they all had clear motives and became much more dynamic through their lines and actions (drizella is arguably the most static character here but she still amuses me so itâs fine i guess). cinderella has more agency since the stakes are higher. prince charming actually has a gotdamn personality and has some of the funniest scenes and dialogue. good for him. i was kind of sad that anastasiaâs story with the sweet baker boy was thanos snapped by the stepmother, but she and baker boy get a cute credits illustration together so itâs still canon! maybe iâm more biased on this one because i grew up rewatching it A Lot, but i definitely prefer it to the first and second movies.
cinderella (2000) - this one is kind of weird but i like it? the film has a really interesting vibe that iâm still trying to figure out how to describe even after seeing it like 5 times. wikipedia refers to the aesthetic style as âthe glamour of the 1950sâ which just might be as close as we can get. it follows the general guidelines of the cinderella plot, but the main differences were: zezolla (cinderella) was already helping with the chores before her father remarried, claudette (stepmother) was actively trying to murder zezollaâs father during their marriage, the stepsisters were much more violent and crass (they hunted zezollaâs beloved farm animals for sport and talked about getting âa man in [their] bedâ), zezollaâs father was manipulated by everything claudette did and said and treated his own daughter poorly as a result, and prince valiant is honestly kind of a douchebag but seems willing to improve himself after meeting zezolla (basically his vibes are iffy but heâs willing to learn). this whole movie is pretty niche and i have yet to interact with someone whoâs also seen it. and the only reason iâve seen it so many times is because i just like listening to how the dialogue is delivered. (except for prince valiantâs random song at the ball, i kind of hated that and i skip through it every time lol).
a cinderella story (2004) - the classic hilary duff version. very cliche early 2000s high school romance, but it works for the cinderella narrative. not particularly diverse. a classic nonetheless. in my mind this is the pinnacle of the âmodern cinderella movieâ type. this is one of the most iconic movies for us zillennials and iâd like to think itâs known well enough for me to not go into a lot of detail about it. basically it was fresh and new for its time, had plenty of memorable scenes, and did i mention hilary duff? the film kind of plays into the ânot like other girlsâ trope - as do a couple of the movies i listed above - but iâm just going to acknowledge that the early 2000s were Wack and simply move on. all in all, i like this movie for the nostalgia, iconic scenes, and hilary duff. also jennifer coolidge is pretty funny as the stepmother.
another cinderella story (2008) - again, an early 2000s classic, but this time with selena gomez. i liked the dancing in this one. i like selenaâs quiet, somewhat timid characterization of her character, mary. and jane lynch in the stepmother role is perfection. sheâs so fun to watch and is always hilarious. the story is nothing remarkable, but itâs okay and i liked it as a kid. after the hilary duff version, this one still managed to feel fresh because, though it was similar in its modern era approach, it focused more on the performing arts and dance. âcinderellaâ is an aspiring dancer, rather than the 2004 aspiring scholar. the âprinceâ is a famous popstar, not a football player. the stepmother is an outdated popstar desperate to stay Hip and Relevant with the kids, not a cranky botox lady. honestly i just love watching this one for the dancing, maryâs genuine and innocent love for the âprinceâ, and literally everything that comes out of jane lynchâs mouth. that woman is a dialogue gold mine.
a cinderella story: once upon a song (2011) - lucy hale is good. missi pyle is good. they play their roles and lines that theyâre given fairly well. over all, itâs entertaining. lucy, of course, has them Pipes and i do like the songs in this movie. the only major downside for me was the âtoken best friend of colorâ trope. lucyâs best friend is an asian girl whoâs good at sports and is there for one liners and support. the prince charming characterâs best friend is a black guy who he only knew for probably a month at the most. he can beatbox, sing, and dj. basically heâs also just there as support. they really donât do much for the plot but theyâre there for diversity and whatnot. this movie is.. fine.
cinderella (1950) - the only reason this ranks so low for me is because i watched it a lot as a child when it was on vhs and it always felt like a fever dream to me. i was just really young and didnât feel invested in any of the characters. it is a classic, though, and i would watch it again and be able to enjoy it.
cinderella 2: dreams come true (2002) - i liked cinderellaâs and anastasiaâs stories from this one. jaqâs was meh. it was fine.
dj cinderella or cinderella pop (2019) - netflix knows i like cinderella adaptations so, naturally, they shoved this into my recommended and, naturally, i watched it. twice. which is more than i can say for the following review... so this movie is brazillian and is pretty much the cut & mold of modern cinderella movies. but she wants to be a dj. she stars out living a perfect life as a wealthy girl with a loving family, but turns out her dad is cheating on her mom with his secretary. thatâs when she âstops believing in loveâ. which is actually valid bc if i saw one of my parental figures cheating on the other, i honestly wouldnât know what to believe in anymore. anyway, cĂntia dorella (yes. thatâs her full name.) and her mom move into her auntâs place. a year or so passes. stepmother/secretary/cheating lady is throwing an extravagant birthday party for her daughters and hires freddy prince, a popular musician who cĂntia doesnât really like. meanwhile, cĂntia gets a dj gig sheâs excited for until she finds out sheâs the opener for freddy prince at her stepsistersâ party. she ends up disguising herself as âdj cinderellaâ and freddy is super into her. itâs pretty generic from there but i was entertained enough to watch it twice. take from that what you will.
cinderella (2015) - ok so we been knew that d*sneyâs live action remakes ainât shit, and this one is no exception. d*sney within the last few years has been like 99% aesthetics and marketing. this movie was visually stunning, especially with the settings and costumes. those were the only 2 things i truly liked. everything else was forgettable. in its defense, i did read a post about the âhave courage and be kindâ message which is something wonderful to hold onto, especially for anyone in an abusive situation like ella. thatâs valid and i respect that. i still lowkey hate this movie tho. i started getting a headache about 4 reviews ago, but remembering how much praise this movie got has reignited my fighting spirit. honestly if you like it, thatâs good, you like what you like and thatâs that. but this is my review and i hated how proper ellaâs posture was (sheâs been doing physical labor hunched on the floor for years now, how does she not slump around in exhaustion at the end of the day??), i hated how perfectly curated the whole thing was (again, thatâs mostly because of d*sney and their aesthetics), and i hated how hollow everything felt. i canât perfectly describe it, but i never felt emotionally invested in any of the characters. something about their performance was lacking and yet again i blame d*sney. i actually really like lily james, but something about the way she was directed left me devoid of emotional attachment to ella. i remember nothing about ellaâs step family or the prince. thatâs how much of an impact this adaptation had on me. also i just remembered the fairy godmother as i type this. i ADORE helena bonham carter, but this movie does a horrible disservice to her. if she liked working on this movie, then iâm happy for her, but even she wasnât strong enough to sell this to me. i saw this movie in theaters and came out of it lamenting my waste of money that i could have spent on something i would have actually enjoyed. but the thing that enraged me the most, the thing i despised, i detested, the thing i seethed over and rant about to this day was the ONE (1) token black character. i donât even know if he had a name but he was captain of the guard or some shit. if i remember correctly (but probably not tbh this movie was so forgettable), he was the one who heard ella singing and was the whole reason the prince was able to have her try on the glass slipper. this man, who had zero character development, zero relevance to the plot, an insignificant amount of screen time, is suddenly the reason the main character is able to finally connect with her love interest. um. What. i hate how the writers treated him and i will forever be filled with every last grain of salt over this. anyway heâs my favorite character and everyone else is just eh. to conclude this ungodly long review, i donât like this movie. i tried to watch it again once but got so bored i quit 10 minutes in. do yourself a favor and watch cinderella (1997) instead. (the only reason this movie is ranked above the remaining 5 is the production quality. but i guess thatâs unfair bc d*sney has the big bucks. and maybe i wouldnât be so harsh if i werenât sleep deprived and grumpy from a sugar-induced headache, but these feelings still come from my Chest so idk.)
a cinderella story: a christmas wish (2019) - i think we all secretly enjoy christmas-themed movies and this has got to be someoneâs guilty pleasure. i was mildly entertained (but again with the cringey dialogue written by people clearly not in high school...) and i do like laura marano. but they autotuned her to hell and back - which i loathed - because the woman can actually sing and she has a lovely voice. she got to sing candidly one (1) time and i relished the experience. my ears thank her beautiful, un-autotuned voice. other than that it was.. fine. i didnât hate it but i didnât like it either. laura marano deserves better than this. (canât say the same for the other actors tho because their roles were unmemorable.) also laura marano was super cute in her elf costume!
not cinderellaâs type (2018) - i legit forgot about this one until after i compiled the entire list lol. i saw it on youtube and it was decent as far as i remember. itâs another modern day cinderella. i think the âprinceâ runs over âcinderellaâsâ cat or something?? iâm pretty sure it was her momâs cat so now she has nothing left to remember her mom by. prince boy feels awful and tries to befriend her or do something to make it up to her, but she just doesnât really like him. i think her aunt and uncle are emotionally abusive to her and prince boy does his best to be there for her without making things worse. if i remember correctly, i liked that aspect of the movie because itâs hard to be there for a victim of any kind of abuse if trying to help them could potentially hurt them more, especially minors still under the care of abusive guardians. anyway i think cinderella girlâs best friend is in love with her or something but she ends up not being into him and slowly gets together with prince boy. she eventually moves out of her guardiansâ house and into the spare house at prince boyâs home (heâs rich or something). i need to rewatch this movie tbh i could be wrong about everything here lol.
rags (2012) - not amazing, definitely not memorable because i have nothing to say about its plot or writing, but it has keke palmer which is its one redeeming quality. also itâs the only one on this list where the male protagonist is the cinderella. so thatâs solid i guess.
a cinderella story: if the shoe fits (2016) - this was a movie. it happened. i vaguely remember how ridiculous it was and sometimes i felt secondhand embarrassment. i donât remember what about specifically, but i remember the emotion. sofia carson is a talented singer. i think sheâs a decent actor but this script was Bad.
elle: a modern cinderella tale (2010) - i only watched this one because i was bored out of my damn mind and saw it on youtube. i felt bad for all the actors because this script was terrible. i donât recommend this unless youâre about to sit down with your squad and make fun of it.
apparently descendants is on the âcinderella adaptations and referencesâ list on imdb but i refuse to put it on my list because itâs not a cinderella-specific adaptation and i donât like the descendants franchise. now, if weâre going to discuss a quality series about the children of fairytale characters, that would hands down be ever after high. but thatâs a different topic for a different day.
thus concludes the ranking no one asked for but i felt compelled to make. thank you and goodnight
#summer.txt#cinderella#longpost#if anyone reads through this whole thing congrats!#i'll get u a gold star from the esteemed dollar store and bequeath it to you via uploaded photo#i didn't think i'd be typing for 4 hours straight but apparently i have a lot to say#i started falling apart at the end there lol#and around the middle bc i forgot to add cinderella 1 and 2#god my head fucking hurts#i had a craving for sugar today but i went overboard and now i'm paying the price

Idol Precure Series: A Gratuitous Costume Parade
Because that is literally what this is. An excuse to dress everyone up in cute clothes.Â
Not complaining, though. The girls look fabulous~
Anyways, yâall aware they were grouped together because of what their civilian identities have in common, right?
Well, thatâs how I see it so I typed this up so I can use it for reference later.
Initially, it was just a companion (?) piece to this StarPre prediction post (therefore, the StarPre girls havenât been included yet so go check out that post until they are) but now Iâll come back to edit/update it again when more new stuff is released or I find better quality pictures.
I also have some ideas for possible new groups if they ever add or mix-and-switch the current ones but thatâll be on another post altogether to avoid confusing myself, ahaha~
Anata no kokoro o mitoshi-tai (Team âI see through your heartâ)
Members: Yukishiro Honoka, Hanasaki Tsubomi, Tsukikage Yuri, Shirabe Ako, Yakushiji Saaya
At a glance, it seems like they put all the smart ones together but itâs really because these girls all wear glasses.
Yep, the meganekko group.
I mean, they are smart but the key point here is clearly the glasses. Which is a tad bit of a shame because I feel like that (moe aspect) takes away from recognizing them for their intelligence first.
On another note, interestingly enough, I believe thereâs a play on words with their unit name. If you say it out loud without knowing the context, it really sounds like âI want to look into your heartâ. Can someone confirm this? My amateur Japanese isnât enough to explain it eloquently.
Others who can fit into this group: Hishikawa Rikka
Bunbu Ranbu (âMartial Danceâ)
Members: Myoudouin Itsuki, Aoki Reika, Yotsuba Alice, Hikawa Iona
Martial arts practitioners.
Also, Iâm pretty sure Reika knows some kendo along with kyĆ«dĆ since weâve seen her wielding a giant ice sword as Cure Beauty multiple times throughout the franchise. We just didnât see her do it in civilian form. Hmm. :/
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Eternal Moment
Members: Higashi Setsuna (Eas), Akagi Towa (Twilight)
Former villainesses who turned good and became a main heroine.
Iâm so glad they didnât forget about their evil alter-egos cuz Eas and Twilight (or perhaps just Twilight) can be considered separate characters in their own rights so itâs nice to see them show up in advertisement again every once in a while.
Hmmm, their name though... it looks like this unit might only be intended for two people (âEternalâ for Towa and âMomentâ for âSetsunaâ).
That is, unless they add onto it like HNMH (see below) if they plan to include more girls into this category. If so, then...
Others who can fit into this group: Kurokawa Ellen, Lulu Amour
Mystic Diva
Members: Kurokawa Ellen, Kenzaki Makoto
Haresora Concerto (ïżœïżœClear Sky Concertoâ)
Members: Minazuki Karen, Hojo Hibiki
Haresora Concerto with Mystic Diva (collab?)
Additional members: Tategami Aoi
Girls with strong affiliation to music...I think?
We saw Karen playing the violin in Yes!5 Precureâs OP and her parents are famous musicians themselves (just like Hibikiâs) but I canât recall if she ever played any instrument during any particular episode in Yes! 5 or Gogo(?). Anyways...
Mystic Diva contains those who are renowned singers from another world (I donât think Ellen sang much after she sorta permanently remained in human form but as Siren, she was one of the top contenders next to Hummy to sing the Melody of Happiness so thereâs that).
Haresora Concerto obviously are for those who practice classical instruments.
Finally, the collaboration...is it a collaboration or did they really merge the two units together? If not, then Aoi will still need to be assigned to a group and if weâre going by the above criteria, she doesnât fit into either one (Mystic Diva isnât really her style anyway and sheâs long given up the violin to play the guitar).
Maybe theyâll come up with another unit specifically focused on the rock genre in the future cuz we have Emiru and Lulu now so thatâll be enough to start one.
Others who can fit into Mystic Diva: Lulu Amour (+ guitar) [??]
Granted, Lulu didnât sing before she arrived in present day Hugtto but she did say sheâs going to bring music back to the future so...why not count that and the future as âanother worldâ, hmm?
Others who can fit into Haresora Concerto: Yotsuba Alice (piano), Haruno Haruka (violin), Akagi Towa (violin), Kaidou Minami (violin) [??]
I donât really associate Minami with music even though she is skilled at playing the violin. Itâs just that compared to Towa and Haruka where the violin played a significant part in their story arcs, Minami and the violin is more secondary (pfft, not even) to her connection with the sea. But then again...Karen is in this group so I dunno :S
Did I forget anyone else who plays a classical instrument? I feel like Iâm missing someone...
Others who can join the collab: Everyone listed above + Kasugano Urara (singing), Aisaki Emiru (singing, piano, violin and guitar)
Haruka Nozomu Mirai no Hana (âWishing for the Flower of the Far Off Futureâ)
Members: Yumehara Nozomi, Haruno Haruka, Asahina Mirai, Nono Hana
The dream chasers.
And by far, the unit I find the most aesthetically pleasing. ^^
Also, I feel like some people would try to argue that Mirai âdidnât have a goal and therefore, she doesnât belong in this groupâ so as she is my beloved daughter, I need to make them eat the dirt of their WRONGNESS.
Because MahoPreâs epilogue obviously showed her trying to find a way to reunite with Riko and Ha-chan, aka bring their two worlds together again, so that definitely counts as her dream (not to mention, the most ambitious one out of everybody elseâs in this group). Furthermore, if you actually watched MahoPre more closely, you would know her dream of the two worlds coming together came to her gradually rather than happening at a particular moment and was solidified after she had to separate from her team after the Big Boss fight in the finale.
And you know what? Her wish was fulfilled in the end so yâall can suck it. :P
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Home Maid
Members: Kujo Hikari, Minamino Kanade, Madoka Aguri, Omori Yuko, Usami Ichika, Arisugawa Himari
Cooking or maybe, more accurately, sweets enthusiasts? *makes side eye at Aguri*
Well, besides that, they also either helped out at a restaurant or provided a service that had something to do with food (tea ceremony in Aguriâs case).
Hence, the âmaidâ part, I guess...
...but if so, then this is a poster for a maid cafe, not an idol unit! :P
Others who can fit into this group: Hyuuga Saki (family runs a bakery) [?], Akimoto Komachi (family runs a Japanese confectionery shop) [?], Hino Akane (family runs an okonomiyaki restaurant) [?], Haruno Haruka (family runs a Japanese confectionery restaurant) [?], Kotozume Yukari (learned from her grandmother how to perform tea ceremonies) [?], Kirahoshi Ciel (owns her own sweets restaurant), Nono Hana (grandparents ran a Japanese confectionery shop)
With the exception of Ciel, a lot of â?â cases here because similar to the Karen/Minami in Haresora Concerto, their main interests donât particularly lie in cuisine and most of them never stated any intention of carrying on their family business. So itâs really up to whether you want them in this unit or not. Personally, I think Home Maid has enough members already so...
Oh and Hana was crossed off the list since she became the president of her own company at the end of Hugtto.
M.V.P.
Members: Misumi Nagisa, Hyuuga Saki, Natsuki Rin, Hino Akane, Midorikawa Nao
This oneâs self-explanatory. Athletes. Sporty types.
Not much else to say.
Others who can fit into this group: Hojo Hibiki, Kagayaki Homare (?)
Yes, while Homare does participate in a sport, singles figure skating is mostly an individual event so the MVP title canât really be applied to her. I guess that was the reasoning behind why she wasnât placed in this group even though thatâs what sheâs most known for.
Osha-Revolution
Members: Kurumi Erika, Shirayuki Hime, Kagayaki Homare
The fashionistas!
This is my most favorite idol unit name out of all the others not only because it sounds like the most cleverly thought out but also because just hearing the word ârevolutionâ gets the legendary Utena Revolution OP playing in my head again. *jams to the beat*
Thankfully, itâs got no connection to this idol series cuz *GAAASP*......*whispers* no.
Anyways, Iâm glad itâs universally agreed upon that Erika and Hime would get along like five runways crisscrossing simultaneously at Fashion Week. Adding Homare to this lineup is appropriate because sheâs always being complimented for dressing so stylishly.
Also, having someone as tall as her stand in between Erika and Hime like a giraffe hanging between two Hyacinth Macaws, lol is really...picture perfect.
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Secret Lives
Members: Mimino Kurumi, Hanami Kotoha, Kirahoshi Ciel
Mascots who can transform and became one of the main heroines in their respective seasons.
I like their aesthetic, too. Even though they give off cute vibes as much as any of the other idol groups, thereâs still a âmysteryâ air about them.
Others who can fit into this group: Kurokawa Ellen (?)
Ermmm...Ellen was a mascot but she wasnât aligned with the good side in the beginning. And after she became a Cure, she didnât revert back to cat form again... *shrug*
SoushiâSouai (âMutual Love with Creativityâ)
Members: Mishou Mai, Akimoto Komachi, Hoshizora Miyuki, Kise Yayoi
Those whose strongest weapon is the pen (or brush) in their hand. Or something like that? I was trying to go for something more artful but I guess not. :P
This groupâs name gave me a little trouble in translating but I think what I settled for in the end gets the idea across well enough. They love creating so much that theyâll be rewarded in kind with lots of inspiration.
...which sounds a bit unfair for everyone else suffering creative blocks but okay.
Others who can fit into this group: Nono Hana
Triple Heart
Members: Momozono Love, Aida Mana, Aino Megumi
The love-obsessed.
Not much else to say here either.
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Up to Me
Members: Aono Miki, Izayoi Riko, Kotozume Yukari
The Ladies.
At least thatâs what I like to think them as. âUp to Meâ gives off the impression of a very decisive person. Along with how mature they act, these girls fit that description to their own special degrees.
Like, Miki is very focused on her modeling career and confident sheâll go far, Riko has good work ethic and always aims for her goals and Yukari is, well, good at almost everything and is also a very âmy paceâ kind of woman.
...they all have purple hair, too, so Iâm wondering if thatâs another prerequisite for being added to this unit.
Others who can fit into this group: Tsukikage Yuri, Kenzaki Makoto (?)
Yuri would fit in no problem but Makoto Iâm still teetering back and forth on...
Urara*Kirara
Members: Kasugano Urara, Amanogawa Kirara
RaâȘRaaâȘRaaaâȘRaaaaâȘRaaaaaâȘ SuÄ«to SuÄ«to Puri-Kyu=AHâȘ
Girls who aspire for the stage (acting and signing for Urara and modeling for Kirara) and have â-raraâ in their names.
If thatâs the case here, guess this is another unit meant for anyone who fits those limited criteria. Otherwise...
Others who can fit into this group: Aono Miki (modeling), Kenzaki Makoto (singing)
White Coat Angels
Members: Yamabuki Inori, Hishikawa Rikka, Kaidou Minami, Kenjou Akira
Those with a future in medicine.
But Minami...hmm, well, though it was never clearly stated what her profession was (I donât think?) when she grew up, she couldâve gone on to become a wildlife veterinarian after she achieved her degree in marine biology so yea, she counts.
Others who can fit into this group: Minazuki Karen, Yakushiji Saaya
Exclusive??
Kiratto! Open to All
Members: Kira Kira Precure a la Mode
Twin Love
Members: Aisaki Emiru, Lulu Amour
Pretty damn sure the first one was made specially just for KiraPre. No other girls sport blatant animal imagery on them. Plus, thereâs no point in including anymore members than how many this group already has.
As for Twin Love, itâs a canon idol pair unit in Hugtto. Adding anyone else in it would not make it âTwinâ Love anymore.
So that leaves the question of where Emiru and Lulu will go in the next series, I guess. Though Iâm sure theyâll stick together wherever theyâre assigned.
Side B
Royal Road
Members: Kokoda Koji (Coco), Natts, Ouji Masamune, Prince Kanata
Fairy Five
Members: Amai Shiro (Syrup), Pop, Raquel, Lance, Aroma
Did anyone else think that âSide Bâ also stood for âSide Boysâ before Dark Party was released? (And yes, I know what a B-side track is so you donât have to tell me)
Anyways, Royal Road is obviously for the prince characters (though I donât think they really needed to add Ouji-senpai since heâs just a minor recurring character, not supporting but whatever) and Fairy Five is for the younger male mascots who can transform.
Others who can fit into Royal Road: Prince Zeke, Wakamiya Henri, Aisaki Masato (?)
If Dark Dream can join an idol unit despite being a movie-only character, then I donât see why they canât integrate Prince Zeke into this unit as well. All that matters is how popular or memorable he was in HaChaâs movie because everyone who was picked out for Side B had to have had an impact on the audience one way or another. But at least Zeke makes more sense than Ouji-senpai.
Henri needs no explanation as he is the âPrince of the Iceâ but if you want a prince to accompany his occasional âprincessâ role, including Masato wouldnât be a bad idea. Though I still think Masatoâs more of a knight than a prince.
Others who can fit into Fairy Five: Kuroro (?)
Granted, Kuroro only got a human form by combining powers with Lock in the final battle of Go!Pri and hasnât technically earned it yet since he only begun fairy training when the season ended...but if he can, why not?
The Enemy Boys
Members: Irisawa Kiriya, Luntarou (Wolfrun), Kurosu (Close), Rio (Julio/Pikario)
Off-White
Members: Soular, Westar, Phantom, Shut
âThe Enemy Boysâ ...more like âSchool Infiltratorsâ since they were the few among villains to pose as students in order to get closer to the Cures.
Off-White consists of bishounen villains who eventually came around to understanding and siding with the good side. Which explains the âoff whiteâ part, I guess, since it wasnât an immediate reform for them but a more gradual one that needed a lot of persuasion and thinking.
Others who can fit into The Enemy Boys: ...
Others who can fit into Off-White: Charaleet
Precure Legendary Heroes
Members: Cure Fire (Ban Kenji), Cure Sebastian (Sebastian)
Dark Party
Members: Dark Dream, Dark Precure, Regina, Bibury Vibry
Legendary Heroes is clearly a parody of the Precure franchise itself but since we already grew out of those jokes thanks to Hugtto, Iâm hoping I wonât see any updates for this group ever again. And I will be absolutely livid if they dare to put Cure Infini in this unit because that is not funny.
Dark Party needs no extensive explanation as they were former nemesis/rivals to the Cures who never really got a âgoodâ form even after their Heel-Face Turn (Dark Precure didnât even get one of these). Which is fine because thatâs essentially their charm. What makes dark magical girls so appealing is how awesome they are even when theyâre âevilâ.
Also gotta love the gothic lolita clothes that a number of them usually wear. If they didnât keep Side B separate from Side A, I totally wouldâve liked to put Eas and Twilight in this group as well.
Others who can fit into Dark Party: ...
List of updates under the cut...

Moonlight
pairing:Â kasplon (eddie x mike)
requested: no, but it should have been
warnings: richie being richie
not my gif
this is inspired by the song âmoonlightâ by queen ariana grande
IMPORTANT: everything in italics is flashbacks to when eddie and mike first started dating, bold italics are song lyrics, and regular text is present time if you didnât understand.
The sun is setting and youâre right here by my side.
Eddie turned his head to admire the boy laying beside him on the grass. The moonlight reflected off of his skin and made Eddieâs heart begin to beat in a way he thought would surely land him a trip to the ER if it didnât stop.
Eddie wasnât really sure when he had fallen in love with Mike Hanlon, he just knew it happened sometime between the beginning of their 9th grade year and the ending of their 11th grade year. He had never come to terms with the fact that he was falling for another boy, given the immense homophobia present in Derry, let alone another loser until their last day of the 11th grade.
And the movie is playing, but we wonât be watching tonight.
Middle school had been brutal for the group of 7, but something changed in high school. They all grew out of the âloser phaseâ to an extent, but Mike was the one that changed the most. Richie still wore his hawaiian shirts and cracked inappropriate jokes, but he was also the schoolâs heartthrob, to everyoneâs surprise. Bill continued his art and still had a bit of a stutter, but he was also known as the sweetest guy in school. Ben wrote love letters and poems to Beverly, which led him to win multiple awards in creative writing, every single day, and according to Richie he needed to âman the fuck up and ask her out already.â Beverly was the captain of the girlâs soccer team, as well as the boyâs soccer team since her coach knew she was the best player. Stan still went birdwatching every single morning at 6:30AM sharp and made sure to keep Richie in check, but he was also the schoolâs MVP for his incredible baseball skills. Hell, even Eddie had made a name for himself at the school. Eddie won the national science fair after finding an âeco-friendly way to combat every single germ Richie has ever cursed the planet with,â which started as a joke but ended up working out in his favor.
Every look, every touch, makes me wanna give you my heart.
But Mike Hanlon? Eddie couldnât even begin where to start with him. Was the term âloserâ even fitting for Mike Hanlon anymore? Mike became the star quarterback at Derry High School, being the first freshman to be on the varsity team in Derry history, and is arguably the most popular guy in school. Eddie couldnât think of one person that didnât love Mike, and what made Eddie even more anxious is the fact that girls loved Mike in a different way. A way that made Eddieâs stomach turn when he saw girls giggling and blushing when Mike smiled at them in the halls, or when he saw Mike leaning against Erica Parkerâs locker during free period, whispering something that made her cheeks turn a deep shade of red and making Eddie rush away from the scene.
Iâd be crushing on you, baby, stay the way you are.
But the day that changed everything was the day that Mike Hanlon found out Eddie Kaspbrak had a crush on him, thanks to Richie of course.
âCome on Eddie, you canât hide from him forever,â Stan said, leaning against the door to the janitorâs closet, which Eddie had locked himself in.
Stan heard faint sniffles coming from the other side of the door. Richie had been talking about the winter dance that was coming up soon, and after asking who everyone was going with he just so happened to âsuggestâ to Eddie that he should ask Mike since he had a crush on him anyway. Eddie knew Richie hadnât meant to tell about his crush, hell, it was pretty obvious anyway, but Eddie was still shocked, and Richie was just as shocked, apologizing profusely as Eddie ran out through the cafeteria doors. Stan dashed after him, not before shooting a glare at Richie, of course. The only person that wasnât shaken up by the situation was Mike. In fact, Mike tried to hide the smile that had found its way onto his face.
Eddie took the time to admire the way Mikeâs dark skin looked under the moonâs reflection. He couldnât even put into words how beautiful the sight is, and he silently wished this moment would never end.
I kiss his fingertips as Iâm wishing heâs all mine.
He sometimes wondered if Mike admired him the same way he admired Mike. Eddie wasnât aware of this, but he most certainly did.
âGo away Stan, you donât understand. Youâll never understand. Iâm not even supposed to like him, he doesnât like boys. Everything is ruined now, thereâs no fucking way I can go back out there,â Eddie replied, trying to hold back the sobs that were aching to come out.
Eddie heard the echo of clumsy feet stomping against the door, stopping right in front of the janitorâs closet. âHey Eds, Iâm really sorry, I didnât mean to tell everyone about your crush on Mi- OW STOP IT STAN, JESUS FUCK.â
âDonât fucking call me that Richie, you know I hate that.â
After a while of talking through the door, they eventually gave up on trying to convince Eddie to come out. Stan and Richie were basically talking to themselves at this point because Eddie had stopped replying to them almost 5 minutes after Richie arrived, and the bell had already rang by then.
Just as Eddie had thought the coast was clear and he could make a getaway, planning to skip the rest of the school day and tell his mom he was sick, even if she would drive him to the hospital immediately, he heard someoneâs footsteps come closer and closer to the door. Eddie was too afraid to look out of the crack in the door, in fear of being seen, but he knew all too well who it was.
Eddie had never realized this before, but Mike had beautiful long eyelashes. The way they reflected in the moonlight made it all the more dramatic.
Heâs giving me Elvis with some James Dean in his eyes.
Mike had never liked his near pitch black eyes and long eyelashes, but Eddie loved them. Even more, now that they were dancing in the light like this.
âHey, Eddie⊠I know youâre in there,â Mikeâs soothing voice called. Eddie was frozen stiff at the sound of his voice. âCan you please come out here and talk to me?â Eddie didnât move a muscle. He couldnât. He wanted to, but he couldnât bring his body to it.
A few minutes had passed and he heard a deep sigh from the other side of the door. âThatâs okay. I didnât think you would anyways. I just wanted to ask you something real quick, but I guess I can wait and do it some other time.â Mike waited at the door, hoping Eddie would change his mind last minute, but he knew he couldnât wait forever. Teachers like to patrol the hallways, and Mike snuck out of class without a hall pass.
âIâll see you soon, Eddie,â Mike said quietly, more to himself than anyone else.
Eddie turned away from Mikeâs face and looked back up at the stars, praying he wouldnât see the blush that had started to creep up onto his cheeks at the thought of that day.
Puts his lips on my neck, makes me wanna give him my body.
Mike looks over at Eddie. He always loved Eddieâs freckles, and now looking more intently, he realizes how much heâd rather be staring at them than the stars that aligned the midnight sky.
âTomorrowâs the w-winter dance guys, whatâs th-he plan?â Bill asked, plopping down in his seat in the cafeteria next to Stan.
âWell, I donât know about you losers but Iâve gotta put the moves on a certain someone before tomorrow or else I wonât be getting any winter lovinâ,â Richie said, throwing a wink at Stan, who in return rolled his eyes so hard Eddie thought they might fall out.
Beverly laughed. âWe should all meet up at Benâs house and take photos, then carpool in Billâs van,â she suggested, taking a bite out of her ham sandwich. Everyone hummed in agreement, besides Mike.
âActually, I donât know if Iâll be able to make it or not. My grandpa said I canât go unless all of my work for the week is taken care of by the time the dance starts,â he said, a sad smile on his face.
Eddie tried to hide his sheer disappointment by looking down at his shoes, suddenly losing his appetite. He had finally decided to face Mike at the dance when they could be alone, and maybe even ask for a dance, but totally lost his chance now.
âWhat if we all come over early and help you get your work done quicker, Mikey?â Ben asked.
âThatâs okay guys, I wouldnât want you to get all dirty and sweaty before itâs time to get ready. Donât worry about me,â He said, giving Ben a grateful smile.
âHey, Eddie?â Mike asked, shamelessly staring at Eddieâs side profile.
âYeah?â Eddie said, a little too quick for his own liking, turning around and facing his beautiful boyfriend.
âYou know I love you, right?â Mike whispered softly, grabbing Eddieâs hand and intertwining it with his own. Mike had always been super confident in everything he had done, and he wasnât sure if it was the way the moon hit Eddieâs eyes and made them light up in a way heâd never seen before, or if it were the way Eddie looked at him with enough intensity to put a fire to shame, but for some reason, Mike had begun to grow awfully nervous.
Iâd be falling for you, baby, and I just canât stop.
âI know⊠I love you too,â Eddie replied, pausing between words to catch his breath, which was faltering due to his irregular heartbeat. He wished he had brought his inhaler with him, but he left it on his bedside table.
Eddie looked at the clock that read that it was 5:30. The losers were meeting at Benâs at 6pm to take pictures, leaving Eddie just enough time to finish getting ready and make his way there.
Eddie was adjusting his tie when he heard knocking at the front door.
âComing,â he said, slipping on his shoes and opening up the door. There in front of him stood Mike Hanlon, dressed in a dark purple dress suit, holding a red boutonniĂšre in his hand, matching the one that was pinned to his lapel.
âGood afternoon, Eddie Kaspbrak. I know itâs a little short notice, but I was wondering if youâd like to accompany me to a certain school dance on this fine evening?â Mike said, smiling brighter than the sun had ever shone.
Eddie nodded and stepped out of his home, choosing not to verbally reply in fear of choking up and embarrassing himself and allowed Mike to place the boutonniĂšre on his tux. The two boysâ faces were just centimeters apart, and Eddie swore he might pass out if they got any closer. Mike lifted his head after pinning the flower and stared deeply into Eddieâs chocolate brown eyes. He took a moment to admire the small boyâs face, as well as the rosy pink tint that took over the boyâs cheeks and neck. A slight breeze moved a piece of Eddieâs hair out of place and Mike couldnât help but to run his own fingers through it and fix the misplaced hair. Eddie was sure Mike had heard his breath hitch.
Mike grabbed Eddieâs hand and led him down the street to Benâs house, eventually starting up a conversation about how Richie totally cheated in Twister during last weekendâs game night.
Eddie placed his head on Mikeâs chest, and Mike wrapped his arm around Eddieâs waist. Eddie shook his head slightly and smiled.
I never knew you could hold moonlight in your hands till the night I held you. You are my moonlight.
âWhat is it?â Mike said, giggling softly at his silly boy. Eddie looked up. âI am so damn in love with you, Mike Hanlon.â It was Mikeâs turn to lose his breath.
âHelloâ by Lionel Richie was softly playing in the background of the school dance. Eddie looked around and he could see everyone scrambling to find someone to dance with. He saw Ben and Bev rocking slowly to the music. Bill and a girl from his chemistry class were dancing as well. He also saw Richie trying to drag Stan onto the dance floor, earning him a smack on the arm. Right when he thought Richie was going to give up, he saw him lean into Stan and whisper something in his ear that made him sheepishly follow Richie to the dance floor.
âMay I have this dance?â Mike asked, bowing dramatically and holding his hand out for Eddie to take. Eddie rolled his eyes, pretending to be annoyed. âGet up, idiot, of course I will.â Mike beamed and took Eddieâs hand, leading him out to the dance floor.
Eddie and Mike had always said they loved each other, but they had never proclaimed that they were IN love with each other. What took Mike by surprised even more was the fact that Eddie was the first to say this.
Heâs so bossy, he makes me dance. Tryna sit in the back of his whip and just cancel my plans.
Mike leaned down placed his forehead against Eddieâs, and they laid just like that. With Mikeâs large hand covering Eddieâs small one, and Eddieâs small frame hugging against Mikeâs.
Eddieâs arms were placed around Mikeâs neck, and Mikeâs arms were placed on Eddieâs waist. Mike loved the way his hands fit right on the sides of Eddieâs body. They swayed back and forth to the beautiful song and it felt like they were the only two in the room. The world around them swirled into a contrast of light and dark colors, leaving the two lovesick boys directly in the middle of the chaos.
Mikeâs eyes never left Eddieâs face. Not even when Eddie tried to turn away from Mike out of embarrassment when he realized Mike was looking at him so directly, suddenly becoming insecure. Mike lightly grabbed Eddieâs chin and made him look at him again.
âPlease donât look away from me like that again. You shouldnât be so insecure. Iâm staring for a reason,â Mike hummed softly, pressing his forehead against Eddieâs. âO-okay,â Eddie stuttered.
Eddie was becoming incredibly anxious at the fact that Mike had yet to respond to him saying heâs in love with him.
Sweet like candy, but heâs such a man.
He could feel his palms start to become sweaty and decided whether he should apologize, but what exactly would he be apologizing for? Expressing his feelings?
Locking eyes, they continued to slowly sway to the music. Second by second, they became slower with their steps until they came to a complete stop in the middle of the room, looking into each otherâs eyes and leaning closer to one another.
âI like you too Eddie,â Mike whispered, enclosing the space between them and taking Eddieâs lips in his.
Mike positioned his body to look over at the small boy, who could feel Mikeâs breath tickling his face. He pulled Eddie even closer to his chest.
He knows just what it does when heâs holding me tight and he calls me moonlight too.
âIâm in love with you too, Eddie Kaspbrak,â Mike said, leaning down to kiss Eddie on his lips.

( ooc: jinx. she/her. 22. capslock enthusiast & Always Tired. )    âMY RELIGION IS VERY SIMPLE. MY RELIGION IS KINDNESS.â
JANE LONGBOTTOM really is the spitting image of SEYCHELLE GABRIEL, right? For someone only TWENTY-ONEÂ ( AQUARIUS/PISCES CUSP ) years old, JANEY has been forced to endure so much. Yeah, that HALFBLOOD has been scraping by at the sanctuary for EIGHT MONTHS now, working as a HEALER in the DIVISION OF HEALING. SHE identifies as CIS-FEMALE and is known to be PERSNICKETY and SELFLESS but also HARDWORKING and ALTRUISTIC. Best of luck surviving through this.Â
CHARACTER PARALLELS: Cosette ( Les MisĂ©rables ), Beth Greene ( TWD ), Lexie Grey ( Greyâs Anatomy ), Emma Woodhouse ( Emma ), Steve Rogers ( MCU ), Kara Danvers ( DC ), Jemma Simmons ( Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ), Primrose Everdeen ( THG the Books )
PINTREST BOARD: [ x ]Â
- Jane was given so much, it almost a surprise that she didnât up greedy & selfish. Whether it was the love her siblings & parents gave her, whether it was the individual little kindnesses in the world that seemed like man made moments of magic, For the first few years of her life, Jane was with a mother who didnât know how to take care of her, though she desperately tried to. The woman was still dealing with emotional scars from the previous Wizarding War and got a job at The Leaky Cauldron -- where Hannah was now the owner. Hannah saw the woman have a hard time with her child, and let her bring the young girl to the Leaky so she could keep an eye on her. Jane was calm, collected and observant even as a child and extremely kind, always offering smiles and compliments to patrons. Always trying to help anyone who worked there, having the best intentions even if she sometimes accidentally got in the way. The Longbottoms had been looking to adopt another child for a while, so when the young mother confided in Hannah that she could no longer her child and didnât know what to do -- The Longbottoms thought it was the perfect opportunity then, to try to adopt Jane and they ended up succeeding.Â
- [ OCD MENTION ] She was always so grateful and never bitter towards her biological mother, Hannah and Neville never were either, happy that they had Jane in their life and she grew up in a loving household nurturing the heart full of love and kindness that sheâd been born with. Her older brother Rhys was someone she was so fascinated with who was extremely protective of her and she loved her sister Violetâs personality, there was passion, love, support as well as someone who understood her. It was then she met her godbrother Albus as well, who was also adopted into one of the most famous families in the Wizarding World and the two became inseparable. When all her family was first shipped off to Hogwarts without her, Jane cried and missed them dearly. Yes, she had Albus, but he still had his sister and extensive family and while she felt close to the Wotters -- it wasnât the same without her siblings. There was a guilt that she felt for not being more grateful. Jane started having obsessive thoughts and compulsions in an attempt to cope with the fears associated with her siblings both being away. Diagnosed with OCD at such a young age was an illuminating thing for Jane, her treatment process was something that further bonded her with Hannah. After months of treatments, exposure therapy, the support of her family & friends, and inner strength, Jane finally felt better and realizing all she wanted to do was give, and give that same healing power & love back to other people. It was clear in her mind then, she wanted to be Healer. It was her calling. [ END OF OCD MENTION ]
- Though Jane was incredibly well liked, she was also sometimes made fun of for naive brand of thinking, and though she had a pure innocence, she was not blind or unexperienced to hurt, mental suffering, and loss. She was underestimated by some as some saw her as a far too idealistic Hufflepuff, a naive girl, a perfect student and so altruistic & sweet it made your teeth rot. It was all genuine, kindness was her virtue and being kind to others even when they were unkind to her was something she frequently practiced. People thought her being a Healer wouldnât work, they thought her meek, but Jane was even more hungry to prove herself, finding any way to advance & learn as quickly as she could to get to her goal as best & quickly as she could. Jane simply couldnât wait. The hardwork paid off, and though Jane didnât graduate early from Hogwarts, she had taken classes & done so many internships as well as pre-Healing programs over summers & during school ( helping in the infirmary with Miss Pomfrey kept her sane ) that she started her training immediately after school a year ahead. Her life was dedicated to that then, and the young girl many thought would probably faint at the sign of blood with how pristine she could act was always hands first in a body cavity doing what she had to. The first to respond to a scene that required extra care and thought. The first to get her scrubs beyond dirty and stained with blood if needed. Jane took authority, she was confident in a way that she didnât display anywhere else.Â
- When the Inferi outbreak started, Jane had just finally graduated from the program and become a full fledged Healer with a research lab and a grant sheâd gotten from the Ministry. Sheâd been focused on finding a way to cure Lycanthropy when people started coming in with weird symptoms, and bodies that didnât look quite human started coming in ripped apart, missing organs. Jane kept calm, but deep in her gut she knew something was wrong and started preparing for the worse -- just as a precaution. It paid off, because when it was told that they Jane was one of the first people at Hogwarts helping set up the Division of Healing in Hogwarts, and has been there for 8 months since. Jane still is truly one of the nicest, kindest, selfless people youâll ever meet that it could kill her. Easily willing to help a person no matter what side theyâre on, itâs hard for her to tolerate suffering in any capacity -- especially when doled out by brainwashed bigoted children. Jane is nonstop in working, sheâs finally gotten to where she wants to start and sheâll be damned to let the world fall apart if she can help it. She wants to do anything she can to help the world and to help heal the people around her, and will do everything in her power to try.Â
RANDOM FACTS:Â
excellent chess player and hot chocolate maker
will try to set you up!!! even in this economy!! is so in love with peopleâs love life and would fuck around with the media bc she found them annoying but funny and always making assumptions so she just went with it and joked around fueling and feeding FAKE AF rumors
Her sexuality and her OCD were two things she had trouble thinking about and dealing with. Firstly, Jane had never really felt the same sexual attraction to people that everyone else had when she was in school. She could never imagine casually sleeping with someone and when someone mentioned a need for sex, Jane didnât really understand it. She figured itâd come later, but it never did and for a while Jane felt broken by it, she felt scared that there was something deeply wrong with her. Albus was who she opened up to first, and he helped educate and reassure her that there was nothing wrong with her -- though she felt comforted itâs not something sheâs thought about further. Especially during the zombie apocalypse. Her OCD now isnât as compulsion driven now as it is obsessive thought centered. Survival mode is hard and definitely taking itâs toll on Jane, something she needs to take care of but feels she canât. Other people are suffering more, they need her brain and they need her hands, she cannot think about things that will unravel her. So Jane pushes it down, as her anxiety grows and the number of hours she sleeps grows less and less.
but really if she sees two people who look cute and are acting cute together sheâll ship it
she really has no artistic talent??? sheâs not the most knowledgeable on it either besides art from books like plays, but painting all that jazz?? how do u do that??
really pure, cinnamon roll, follows da rulez and probs tries to mother you like SHE WILL bc she cares so damn much
always always leads with her heart but it doesnât mean she doesnât have a sharp mind. she just prefers to lead with her heart and FEELS so much
will always be gentle and kind no matter what, itâs wild
loves herbology and likes potions a lot but jane really got good at it through hardwork, ambition to be a healer and curiousity.Â
imma stop now bc THATSÂ A LOT! but thank you for reading and if youâd like to plot just like this!! honestly ur the real mvp if u read this

My thoughts on Yuru Camp 04-06
Hello, my name is Kanra and welcome to my TED talk on why Yuru Camp is still the best anime of the season.
Well, TED talk might be a little over the top....
My love for this show may be as hot as the earthâs core (at least according to the notes I take after watching new episodes, which are honestly not helpful right now due to all the gushing), but I have to admit that writing about it does have its difficulties. Yuru Camp wasnât made with the intention to be picked apart and analysed by reviewers. Itâs a soft, relaxing show about camping. Itâs supposed to help you calm down after a tiring day and it sure as hell has never failed to do that for me.
I might lack the camping knowledge to go into detail on that aspect - though this show does make me want to learn more about camping - but there is one thing that I noticed during these three episodes that I want to talk about.
As an introvert myself, I love, from the bottom of my cold, dark goblin heart, how Yuru Camp portrays introverts and extroverts and their relationships with each other. Rin and Nadeshiko are an introvert and an extrovert respectively and I have personally experienced that this can lead to clashes in friendships. But Rin and Nadeshiko treat each other with so much respect and care that their different natures pose no threat to their budding friendship.
Rin is a solo-camper who enjoys going out during winter because it means the campsites will be less crowded. She enjoys the quiet and is happy just reading a good book in front of her tent. However, the narrative never portrays her as a loner or antisocial. From the beginning on, we see that she is close friends with Ena and during episodes four to six, we got quite a few more moments between them that show how well their friendship works. They donât need to hang out with each other all the time, but they communicate frequently. And while Ena does sometimes push Rin to get out of her shell a little, she never pushes too hard so that it would make her uncomfortable.
Thankfully, the friendship between Rin and Nadeshiko seems to develop into a similar direction. Nadeshiko, who joined the Outclub immediately after entering her new school, never tries to convince Rin that she would enjoy camping in groups more. She leaves the door open for her to come and try if sheâs interested, but she also respects Rinâs love for the quiet. As a result, we got to experience different kinds of camping during these episodes. Rin and Nadeshiko together, Rin on her own, Nadeshiko camping with the Outclub... and all of these were fun experiences.
Iâm gonna be honest, I do want to see all our five girls camp together, but I know that when/if it happens, Rin will not be forced into it. Nadeshiko might take her by surprise with one of her spontaneous ideas again, but she will never make Rin feel like she has to come camping with the Outclub no matter what.
Now that Iâve talked about their relationship extensively already, I do have to say that these characters are really the heart of the show. Not only Rin and Nadeshiko, but also Chiaki, Aoi and Ena (and of course Chikuwa, our adorable dog pal). They are all lovable characters on their own, but what really makes them shine is how real their interactions with each other feel.
The more comedic of these conversations are often the reason why the humour of this show is so on point. I donât think any other anime this season has managed to genuinely make me laugh the way Yuru Camp did. The VAâs of the girls definitely deserve a lot of the credit for that, but the real MVP among them is Sayuri Hara, who voices Chiaki. I actually donât think I have ever watched a show where she had a main role before, but thanks to Yuru Camp Iâll definitely be on the lookout for her in the future. Whenever Chiaki is on screen, laughter is usually guaranteed, and this is in no small means thanks to Ms. Haraâs lively performance.
Of course, thereâs also the obligatory praise for the staff for the amazing background art that really allows me to immerse myself in the beautiful sceneries of the campsites the girls visit. Iâm also a huge fan of the soundtrack thanks to its relaxing qualities that really fit this show perfectly.
Thereâs many more small aspects I could touch upon and I realise that I already mentioned a lot of the things I talk about in this post in my previous quarterly review, but I honestly like that about Yuru Camp? It doesnât try to cram too many things in, but instead builds on its foundations and continuously improves them. Chances are that I will be talking about the friendship between Nadeshiko and Rin again in the next post of this series, but that is only because the writers have clearly given it a lot of thought and keep it developing in a healthy way.
Yuru Camp may âonlyâ be a slice-of-life anime, but it continues to hit all the right notes and for me, there is no other anime this season that comes even close to being this good. I love this showâs characters and atmosphere really, truly so, so much that I have trouble finding the right words if Iâm honest. I would usually be hard-pressed to say this halfway through winter season, but yeah, this is a serious contender for anime of the year in my opinion.
Bonus: Damn, I am so happy to hear that the anime has a lot of fans and that the manga volumes are selling so extremely well! If thereâs one show that deserves it, itâs definitely Yuru Camp!
#this is kinda so-so in terms of writing but don't let that fool you! because I love yuru camp so much!!!!#yuru camp#anime#winter season 2018#thoughts

First Half of 2017 Fic Rec
A compilation of some of the fics that Iâve enjoyed this year [with little glimpses into the stories and comments about them, do check them out to see the actual summaries and do support the authors if you enjoy them as well đ]:
trndsttrs of seoul by chimint || yoonmin, namjin || t || wip
chatfic; jimin is a cinnamon roll and yoongi is whippedâą.
(literally the cutest thing ever, i reread it every day. jungkook calls yoonmin âdadgiâ and âjimomâ respectively (which is so fcking cute nghhh) and namjoon is the captain of the ship and they all ship ym - all concepts i am 100% up for. something to brighten up your day ^^)
Seven Days (Or The One Where Min Yoongi Asks Out Park Jimin Because Of A Girl) by minyoongayashell || yoonmin || bg taekook, namjin || m || wip || tw sexual content (but like, no actual sex)
seven days au; jimin is called âcheot-nal yeâ or âfirst day yesâ. basically heâs famous at school for agreeing to date the first person who asks him out on the first day of the week - 100% of the time, he breaks off the relationship at the end of the week and the cycle repeats itself. now, yoongi hates this girl in class and she wants to ask jimin out. naturally, he has to beat her to it.
(the manga was such a sweet thing and the fic gets me so excited. i donât read a lot of high school aus, but this one is special! itâs not updated very frequently, but itâs definitely worth a read.)
Bullet Boy by sugamins || yoonmin || e || tw homophobia/sexual content || wip || tw references to drug use/depression
in which yoongiâs an underground rapper and jimin collabs with other rappers to break into the scene and flash forward into the future, they are caught up in a âscandal the likes of which the industry has never seen before.â
(the writing is so amazing, wow, itâs only on the first third chapter but the author makes it feel so promising. i kid you not, i actually messaged them and fangirled embarrassingly bc I am that kind of person. also ! underground yoonmin !)
Hiraeth by haruguk || taekook, yoonmin, platonic yoonkook || not rated but probably e || 100k || tw sexual content/graphic content/drug abuse/mental instability/psychosis || tw referenced child abuse/cheating/alcohol abuse/self-harm (basically a lot of warnings!)
diary of an oxygen thief au; perfect fratboy jeongguk gets off of breaking hearts, but he canât quite do the same to kim taehyung. âhurt people hurt people.â read the warnings carefully!
(basically this fic broke my heart time and time again and everyone has probably already read this but i still must rec it bc it is that good.)
tats'n'thots by Death_Impala || taekook || bg yoonmin || not rated but probably m || 12k || tw sexual content
tattoo artist au; taehyung to jeongguk: âI feel inspired, and I want to work with you, so how about this: let me tattoo you in any way I want, free of charge â with your input of course.â also, bottom jk. c:
(i am trash for the using-your-body-as-a-canvas trope and similarly, or even more so, for bottom bby jk. :â) this fic is a blessing. taekook and art obviously belong in the same sentence.)
Idiosyncratic by jiminsfw || taekook || e || 19k || tw sexual content/knots/ruts/usual abo things
a/b/o au; taehyung and jungkook are an alpha/alpha couple, and no one thinks that alpha/alpha couples can last. involves ruts and switching and so much emotion.
(this was a particularly interesting read bc it took me forever to find a fic with alpha/alpha taekook! alpha/alpha taekook nghhh itâs just the cutest thing, a little sad, but ultimately very fluffy.)
Mileage May Vary by rix || taekook || e || 80k || tw sexual content/age difference/strip clubs/recreational drug use
âJeongguk is a stripper with a penchant for trouble. Taehyung is curious.â taehyung is nine years older than jk, who has a prince albert btw. bottom jk as always. sort of soft sugar daddy tae? but not really.
(once again i am trash for bottom jk. and all of rixâs fics are so good ;A; the quality just gets better and better. also, tae is once-divorced, heads up. in rixâs words, nothing really happens but still, itâs so enjoyable. <3)
spring day by Bangtanbananas || yoonmin, taekook, namjin || e || 70.9k || tw violence/graphic content/sexual content/mpreg/heats/usual abo things
wolf au; only 5% (i think) of wolves find their fated mates (but most wolves believe they donât actually exist bc soulmates?), and although jimin dreamt of finding his when he was a pup, he didnât actually expect to in the mysterious alpha from the mountains.
(i crave shit like this bc wolves + a/b/o + pack dynamics is just - c: omega jm and alpha yg, yes please. seokjin is the real mvp.)
half feral, but just right by themelonlord || yoonmin, platonic jikook || e || wip || tw discrimination/bullying/graphic content (but not really)/probably sexual content || tw referenced child abuse
a/b/o au; in a world where alphas are considered little more than rabid animals, yoongiâs just trying to scrape by and achieve his dreams. but then he meets omega park jimin and his pseudo little brother, young alpha jeon jeongguk.
(yoonmin with their son /dongsaeng jjk is evidently my absolute favourite thing. :â) i was dreaming about an au where the alphas are victimised for a change a week before i discovered this fic and i wanted to cry bc it was better than i could ever imagine it to be.)
Laugh and I Love You by ifisayhiyousayoops || jinkook || bg vmin || e || 21.9k || tw sexual content
canonverse; seokjin and jungkook are just - so domestic and codependent. literally it. the softest slice-of-life on this side of the internet.
(jinkook has always been my guilty pleasure and i love them. bratty btm bby jk is basically my religion? iâm this fic is so well written! itâs very gentle and sweet and wow. i love love.)
time follows you (and fades) by thebestofme || yoonmin || bg taekook || t || 17k
hogwarts au; half-veela jimin finds himself in slytherin house and falling for slytherin prince, min yoongi. alternatively, jimin is so pretty and yoongi just wants to love him.
(slytherin yoonmin! yoongi is such a sweetheart and he has a pet kneazle named holly. :â) jeongguk is also adorable, iâm so weak. the first part is in jmâs pov and the second oneâs in ygâs, so you literally get two sides of the story. i am trash for hogwarts aus and iâve probably read all of them, and this one is such a gem!)
Once Upon A Dream by yururin || yoonmin || t || 17k
ïżœïżœsoulmates AU where you can see a glimpse of your past life on the eve of your 18th birthday and Jimin dreams of a forbidden Joseon era love story with an upperclassman Min Yoongi, popular basketball player in uni, 18384/10 out of his reachâ
(what is sin - it doesnât exist. this entire thing is so soft and cute and pure. a great pick-me-up!)
glub glub glub by rabbitme || yoonmin || g || 6.7k
sort of chat fic that begins with jimin and yoongi missing each other.
(such purity. i love love. basically ym travelling, together and apart. ot7 interaction is something to look forward to, as well. itâs so fluffy, please read this and be blessed.)
light side of the moon by themelonlord || yoonmin, namjin, taekook, 95line || e || 80.8k || tw brief graphic content (blood)/sexual content
wolf au; jimin moves into a quiet town and befriends kim taehyung, who subsequently changes his life.
(it is such a lovely story, very pure, very gentle, with filth. :â) nothing really happens; itâs just a story about a boy who finds himself loving a man who can turn into a wolf. the ot7 is strong in this one. highly recommended if 95line and puppy piles make you smile.)
King of My Heart by wanderment || taekook || t || 17.7k
jeon jeongguk is the youngest son of the king of korea. taehyung is a friend of a friend - and a fan, but donât let jeongguk know that. yet.
(a very wholesome and pure fic. theyâre all rich college kids in this; minus namjin who are jkâs bodyguards. it feels short when you read it, but definitely very enjoyable. itâll make you smile.)
The Victorious V and his Vast, Venturesome Heart by aprofessorstale || taekook, yoonmin || e || wip || tw sexual content/identity crises?
canonverse; taehyung is in love with love. jimin doesnât believe in it.
(this is probably one of the best non-aus iâve read in forever. itâs very introspective, incredibly heavy when it comes to discussions of sexuality and identity. it is very well-written and the author had captured their personalities well, while sticking to a timeline mostly following reality. (basically everything happens post-ynwa era) taekook are complicated and as are yoonmin, and while the story isnât over yet, it is definitely worth the read. nam2seok are the resident straights and they deserve to be loved. on that note! yg is demisexual, rejoice.)
I Wrote This For You by chikichikichuu || yoonmin, taekook || bg namjin || t || wip || tw referenced depression/self-harm
the âcliffhanging heartbreaking motherfucking breakthrough debut novelâ you will not read this story frustrates jungkook enough for him to send an aggressive e-mail to his newly proclaimed favourite author, min yoongi. (or, yoonmin through jungkookâs eyes. painful, yet worth it. taekook are relationship goals, basically, and everything is seemingly lovely until it isnât. it hasnât been updated since february ::) but itâs the kind of story that you canât stop thinking about. suffer with me. <3)
a silhouette of new by mygz || yoonmin || m || wip || tw sexual content
sugar daddy gone wrong au chatfic; an unknown number sends jimin a message, thinking heâs a sugar baby.
(very very cute! i look forward to this a lot. yoongi and jm are both very natural and very adorable, spicy and sweet. uwu seriously something to look forward to if youâre into fluffy and sexy sugar daddy au chatfics.)
Lurking Shadows by GrandDragon03 || taekook, yoonmin, nam2seok, platonic yoonminkook || m || wip || tw violence
monster hunter au; jungkook is taken in as an apprentice by the legendary (and also married) hunter pair, min yoongi and park jimin.
(this is so good? the world-building is a+. please read if you want to see yoonmin with their son jk and good writing. the summary is in first person, but the story itself isnât written that way, i promise. jk is a reckless prodigy but yoongiâs working on it.)
A New World by lonelyonion || taekook, yoonmin, nam2seok || e || wip || tw graphic content/violence/character death
super powers/not today au; âJeon Jungkook was born to save the world, thatâs a fact. Everything else, that was spontaneous.â
(this needs more attention! itâs still very short but very well-written and i am sooo excited for where this is headed. there are also not enough nam2seok fics in the world. :â) also! author says not to worry about the character death, but letâs see.)
Breathless by makkurokuro93 || yoonmin || bg namjin || e || 37k || tw sexual content
swim team au; after an unexpected break from the athletic world, yoongi finds himself back in south korea as their national teamâs new coach. everything is almost the same as when he left, except, now, thereâs park jimin.
(admittedly i havenât finished this yet. đ€· but! it seems very promising and thereâs a nuance to the writing that colours everything in this sort of hazy blue filter. itâs just really pretty, wow. i say this bc i havenât gotten to the smutty bits yet, tbh. what iâve seen of the characterisations are brilliant! will update this when i finish reading. ;; letâs scream together.)
Impractical Magic by springrain21 || yoonmin || t || 16.8k || tw dismembered toes/spirits
witch au; yoongi is the worst witch jimin has ever met, basically.
(so so so cute! thank you to the original creator of the tumblr post that inspired this entire thing bc it just makes me so happy. yg is such an endearing character, and jm obviously feels the same way. you will fall in love.)

London Film Festival 2017 or: the real world sucks just watch films for 2 weeks
I feel like Iâve spent my entire student loan seeing things at the London Film Festival, which ran over the last few weeks.
Was worth it.
#1: MANIFESTO, directed by Julian Rosefeldt, 90 mins
- Originally a critically acclaimed multi-screen video installation in which Cate Blanchett plays 13 different characters, ranging from a school teacher to a homeless man, performing artistâs manifestos in 13 different scenarios. Part of the financing deal was Rosefeldt had to cut a 90 minute, linear version of the piece for a cinematic setting. Provides some super interesting results.
- Clearly a translation, but an interesting one. Making the viewer watch it beginning to end highlights the flaws in that translation from installation to cinematic setting (can get too much to digest sometimes), but when it works, it *really* works.Â
- More than anything, made me think about the cinema as a space- question the realms of it and what weâre putting on a big screen.Â
- CATE FUCKING BLANCHETT!!!! i am convinced no one could have pulled this off like she did. Sheâs running on adrenaline and pure bravery. She makes interesting choices at every twist and turn. A masterclass.
- You HAVE to be fully, super awake and willing to give this your full attention from the start. Itâs slow and beautiful and wonderful... but it is slow.Â
- Genre hops from scenario to scenario perfectly... from Clio Banard-esque social realism to Rachel Maclean-like cartoonish sci-fi.Â
- Some things Julian Rosefeldt and Cate Blanchett said in the talk afterwards that seemed interesting (lots of paraphrasing): - The white cube is a prison... talking to people who already agree with you... Cinema has a bigger audience with more coincidental audience members- Cate Blanchett fans from the new Thor film mayyyy see this... - Ask âwould anyone be interested in seeing this?â, NOT âwill anyone like it?â - âIf I could say what everything means, I should stop doing art.â - âYour brain attends to things differently when watched linearlyâ - âArtâs role isnât educative- itâs provocative.â
4/5.
Opens November 24th.
#2: BATTLE OF THE SEXES, directed by Jonathan Dayton & Valarie Faris, 121 mins
- True story of 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.
- Rousing good fun. A real crowd pleaser. I saw the Gala screening at the Odeon in Leicester Square... the perfect way to watch- with lots of people, all feeling the Hollywood-ised, over-dramatised, over-sentimental beats together... and super enjoying it.Â
- Itâs less subtle than MOTHER! (2017) about what itâs saying, but has a shining, naive optimism to it that you just kind of have to smile at.
- Emma Stone and Steve Carrell as King and Riggs hold all the moving pieces together. They add weight to potentially weightless, throw-away moments.
- All supporting performances great too- Sarah Silverman the MVP. Andrea Riseborough continues to be a chameleon, effortlessly embodying everything about who sheâs playing, and it doesnât even look like sheâs trying. And hey! itâs super nice to Martha MacIsaac back on screen with Emma Stone! Their first time together on screen since Superbad (2007).
- The romance between Billie Jean King and Riseboroughâs character Marilyn Barnett is easily the most engaging aspect of the film. The only time it leaves Hollywood feel-good territory. Something so magical watching them drive the sun-kissed California roads together listening to âRocket Manâ.
3.5/5.
Opens November 24th.
#3: OUR TIME WILL COME, directed by Ann Hui, 130 mins
- 1940s Japanese occupied Hong Kong. Fang Lan, a young primary school teacher, gets involved in the resistance movement and rises to become a legendary figure in the fight for freedom.
- STAKES. Really, really gets how to set up stakes for the characters. Itâs a film about all the small things, the little fights in a war that will eventually add up to victory. Not assassinating all the leaders of the opposing army, just stealing a map thatâs been put in a bin in an enemy outpost, hoping perhaps it helps. Itâs a section of a larger painting. EVERYTHING feels dangerous. Every character is in danger at every moment, and is always punished for making the smallest mistake. Gives the sense that the oppressive State is ALWAYS watching. It demands you never become de-sensitised to the violence which leads to that immediate sense of danger.
- Had a restrained cheapness to it which I actually quite liked. Every now and then you get some goofy looking VFXs and some badly dubbed ADR, but the restraint keeps everything feeling grounded and human.
- Runs at itâs own pace/abides by itâs own structure, which may be too slow/anti-climactic for some, but I liked it for the most part. Playing by itâs own rules and truly being what it wanted to be... which sometimes worked and sometimes didnât.
- The moments it steps out of the main story and does a docu-drama thing... just why? Came across so half-baked. Similar to the 3 time scales in Nolanâs Dunkirk (2017), there was never really a moment of release, an âoh! thatâs a really interesting decision to do that!â moment. Just left me kind of baffled to why?
- Genuine moments of magic that I wouldnât dream of spoiling. Seriously some of the most creative, inspired scenes Iâve ever seen.
- Some guy (wearing a BFI lanyard??) sitting a few seats away kept repeating phrases from the film outloud in a strange voice? Why would you do this??
3.5/5.
UK release date unknown, probably some time in 2018.
#4: LAST FLAG FLYING, directed by Richard Linklater, 124 mins
- 2003. A Vietnam veteran recruits his two oldest buddies, who he served with, to accompany him on a journey no one should ever have to take.
-Â Richard Linklater continues to prove he can effortless hop between genres like no one else, but the film is still packed full with ideas heâs played with before.
- Performances are uniformly and predictably excellent. Bryan Cranstonâs Sal is like the crazy friend of your parents whoâd show up every few years in a beaten up old car and give you a pack of smokes for your birthday. Laurence Fishburne says âpraise Jesusâ every 2 minutes and itâs amazing. Steve Carrell has a quiet dignity to him thatâs really special.Â
- Linklater knows exactly what heâs doing with his camera (water is wet), but it kills me to say it felt visually bland like his films never have.Â
- Features the best âcharacters uncontrollably laughingâ scene since The Intouchables (2011).
4/5.
Opens 3rd November.
#5: THOROUGHBREDS, directed by Cory Finley, 90 minutes
- Two rich-kids from small town Connecticut hatch a plan together.
- Ugh, just.... whatâs the point? Itâs not boring, but every frame just had me thinking âwhy is this happening?â So disappointingly transparent. I could see the director sitting planning the movements and cuts. Painfully âfirst-featureâ like. Should have been a rich, twisted delight, but was just so vapid and empty.Â
- Olivia Cooke is one of my favourite rising actresses. Has one of my favourite performances ever as Rachel in Me and Earl and The Dying Girl (2015), and dammit I cry every time I watch her in it. In this... she does a good job with what sheâs given. Anya Taylor-Joy is fun too.
- Badly costumed?? So rarely actively think that.
- Music was fun but as empty and ultimately weightless as the rest of the film. Felt like an afterthought to spice things up.
- Anton Yelchinâs character was the only person in the whole film I cared about. Brings a greyness to such a black and white film. What a fucking loss to the world man.
2/5.
Opens 9th March, 2018.Â
#6: CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, directed by Luca Guadagnino, 130 minutes
- Somewhere in Northern Italy, Summer 1983, Elioâs life changes.
- Sun-drenched Europe, the smell of warmth and twirling cigarette smoke, deep blue sky- pure, breakfast with a glass of apricot juice and an espresso, the sound of bike spokes spinning lazily.Â
I wish I could live with these people.
âLater.â
4.5/5.
Opens 27th October.
#7: THE SHAPE OF WATER, directed by Guillermo del Toro, 119 minutes
- 1962, Cold War America. A mute cleaner at a government research facility, Elisa, strikes up an unlikely relationship.
- Del Toro just *knows* what heâs doing. Itâs all so effortlessly confident. So rich and fulfilled. Such commitment to everything.Â
- The first half is fantastical and brilliant. The second.... loses something. Still has moments of genius, but too much plot. Fizzles out in a disappointing way.
- Reminded me in a lot of ways of Edgar Wrightâs Baby Driver (2017). Both are clearly projects the directors have wanted to make for a while, both have amazing first acts then donât quite know what do with themselves. However, Shape has pure heart that carries it through any rough patches. It feels like itâs actually about something, not just an exercise in style for the director.
3.8/5.
Opens 16th February, 2018.
#8: LUCKY, directed by John Carroll Lynch, 88 minutes
- The swan song of Harry Dean Stanton. A 90-year old atheistâs life as he wanders his desert town, drinking, smoking and speaking to old friends.
- Pure magic all the way through. Plays at exactly the speed and tone it wants to play at.
- One of the most engaging âbut nothing happens!!â films Iâve ever seen.
- Everyone hits perfectly. David Lynch appears playing a character that has a pet tortoise called President Roosevelt for fuck sake.
- Bleak, but finds immense joy in that bleakness. Whenever I feel like Iâm about to face the void- I will remember the smile of Harry Dean Stanton.
- 3.5/5.
Opens January 2018.
#9: BAD GENIUS, directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya, 130 minutes
- Thai Heist-Thriller about students cheating their exams.
- WHAT A FUCKING RIDE!! More stakes in this than most âend of the worldâ superhero movies.
- The filmmaking is so good it makes you forget plausibility is sometimes being pushed. Amazing set-pieces. Expertly choreographed.
- Whimsical, but painful and genuinely emotional when it needs to be.Â
- Every character is so rich and textured in their own way. So fully realised.
- Why do the last 2 minutes of this film exist??
- 2 years time, there will almost certainly be an American remake of this... and itâll suck so hard.Â
- SEE THIS FILM. SEE THIS FILM. SEE THIS FILM. SEE THIS FILM.
4/5.
Opens some time in 2018.
#10: THE FLORIDA PROJECT, directed by Sean Baker, 115 minutes
- In the shadow of Disney World, 6 year-old Moonee and her friends spend the summer playing around the Motels they live in.
- Pastel bright colours. Every person has survived a storm. Explore the wasteland of failed corporate America. Become a child again.
- Baker continues to masterfully blend fiction with reality, wrapping one in the other.
- Doesnât ask you to like the characters. Doesnât need to. One of the very best films of the year.
4.5/5.
Opens 10th November.
#11: INGRID GOES WEST, directed by Matt Spicer, 98 minutes
- Ingrid moves to California to become Instagram famous.
- An enjoyable, fun Saturday night film.Â
- Elisabeth Olsen as âphotographerâ Taylor Sloane is note perfect. Could so easily have slept-walked through it, but didnât. Her relationship with brother Nicky is so, so good. Idea of this Instagram famous rich girl with her crazy, pill-junkie, roid-monkey brother who she knows is terrible but loves him and is sort of as vapid as he is- just knows how to hide it better. And man, he is SO evil. Havenât hated a character as much as I hated him in a while.
- Plaza holds it together. Her and the film trust you to realise how mentally ill she is without reminding us too much.
- 1st half is superbly played... loses it somewhere in the middle of the 2nd act but picks up again at the end.
- Music was terrible?! Suggested some weird criss-cross in tone of the film.
- I GET IT! THE INTERNET IS BAD!
3.5/5.
Opens 17th November.
#12: You Were Never Really Here, directed by Lynne Ramsey, 85 minutes
- Gulf War veteran Joe is known for the brutality he inflicts on captors of the children heâs rescuing.
- Deeply troubled. Beautiful. Precise. Scatter-brained. Focused. A violin strung too tightly, then played by a madman. How can something so stripped down and raw feel so symphonic and wholesome? I feel like Iâve been repeatedly smashed in the head with a hammer... but enjoyed it.
- Jaoquin Phoenix. Lynne Ramsey. Johnny Greenwood.
- There are things in this that will play on loop in my head for the rest of my life.
4.5/5.
Opens in early 2018.
#13: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, directed by Martin McDonagh, 115 minutes
- A mother takes desperate steps to pressure local law enforcement to find her daughterâs killer.
- Perfectly woven and layered characters. I fucking hate the phrase âthe character arcâ, but if I were teaching a class in it- Iâd show this film.Â
- A film about relationships, and every relationship between every character or creature or inanimate object is perfect.
- McDonagh loves theatrical sensibilities. Nobody does grand, rich set-pieces quite like him... makes highly stylised situations feel real in the world he sets up.
- I could have watched hours more of these characters interacting.
4/5.
Opens 12th January 2018.
STRAY THOUGHTS:
- Felt spoilt in the audiences I had the pleasure of watching these films with. Always respectful.
- Every time Clare Stewart (head of festival) came on stage to present a film, I just couldnât help but smile. Bumped into her after a screening and told her my student loan situation. I donât think she knew what to say.
- DONâT WATCH THE TRAILERS OF ANY OF THESE FILMS. THEY SPOIL SO MANY OF THEM.
- I am consistently shocked by how enamoured I am with celebrities. Some weird conditioning in my brain. Am glad I didnât queue up to get a picture with anyone. Saying that, this screenshot from a random interview I saw online where Iâm juuuust to the left of Emma Stone will live on my wall forever.
ughhhhhh iâm a loser ughhhhh
