Let's cut it out already. Stop the stereotypes. This isn't a hobby just for the wealthy, nor it's a hobby just for people in the spectrum (autism), nor is it a hobby just for adult women. A hobby is a hobby. Everyone can enjoy it. I'm tired of the toxic people claiming that "this is their thing", and you can only truly be in the hobby if you're "this or that". I'm not on any list and I still enjoy it. Then these people are the same to ask themselves why there's no new people joining the doll communities! Use this new year to stop asking people to fit in your narrow comprehension of "what the BJD hobby is about" so we can start 2025 with a bigger more accepting community. Thank you. I gotta ask HOW people's dolls get stolen for it to come up as a problem you deal with so much? My mother has a huge and... Uh.... Frankly creepy doll collection (it's all those old porcelain Victorian looking ones. They mostly have real hair, though I suspect that's because many were good modern copies made in china or India. She's not terribly discerning and she mostly goes by vibes and appearance) so I'm wondering.

No one knows about it except the people she buys from. Is it just a resellers problem? Are there predatory folks looking for purchasers of large numbers rare dolls so they can sneak in at night and cram them into a sack?

Oh, I've only dealt with it once! The previous few posts have been about one doll! HOWEVER-- this one doll came from HUGE collection of dolls which were all stolen from one person about two years ago. @resinfish has way more information here: https://www.tumblr.com/resinfish/721331636034224128/unfortunately-the-police-refuse-to-help Prior to purchasing this doll I had no idea it was stolen, nor did I know about the information above! When I was made aware I immediately reached out to Resinfish and we were able to confirm that the doll lot I'd purchased belonged to her friend. I JUST shipped it off back home today! :) I made the post about stolen dolls to let folks know that if I buy one and find out afterwards its owner had it stolen from them, I will do what I can to return it ASAP so long as I know it's theirs. As for how common it is-- man, that's a great question! I assume it varies. I know it happens in conventions sometimes when people leave their dolls unattended, I've heard angry exes, family members and ex friends will donate, toss, or sell dolls as well. In the case of the doll I've been talking about here it and many, many others were stolen by an angry landlord who didn't realize they were valuable- he just knew they had sentimental value, as far as I can tell. He was actively doing this to hurt the owners after losing a lawsuit. (Do correct me if I'm wrong, Resinfish!) Often times theft like this is harder than one may realize to see justice for, this was one of those cases. As for your moms dolls vrs. ball jointed dolls-- ball jointed dolls are often worth a good deal more than porcelain dolls, but I do not think that value is always the deciding factor in theft. Sometimes people just want to hurt other people and that sucks!

I would encourage all of us collectors to watch for these stolen dolls in the second hand market AND if you find that you've bought one, return it back to the original owner. Ideally, free of cost-- but if you can't swallow the cost that you paid for it at the very least allow them the time to pay in increments and don't rush to sell it off to someone else. The world is mean, chose to be kind.

”BJD dolls” and “You can get them on Amazon/Aliexpress!” 🙄

Please don’t take this personally, but I HATE when ignorant people/normies try to get into niche hobbies and say the most ignorant shit or spread misinformation to people looking into getting into the hobby. This is why recasts are such a big issue in the BJD community because people don’t do their due diligence. TikTok isn’t helping this hobby at all because there are people spreading misinformation to people who aren’t old enough to have a job yet. They just see pretty dolls and want them—not realizing these dolls (especially Dollfie Dreams) can range from $200 to $1000+ for just a custom head alone. Someone said, “yeah these [Dollfie Dream] are on Amazon and you can get them for $80!”

Firstly, Dollfie Dreams aren’t technically considered BJDs. They’re fundamentally different as they have an internal “skeleton” and aren’t strung. Second, any BJD you see on Amazon or Aliexpress is TYPICALLY either a recast, not a BJD in terms of structure, or one of those blind box dolls. But, they’re not Volks’ Dollfie Dream.

This is by NO MEANS a cheap hobby, and if you’re looking for “cheap” BJDs, there are plenty of videos on YouTube teaching people how to purchase LEGIT dolls.

I guess I’m just tired of people on TikTok spreading misinformation when people can’t be bothered to take a few seconds to Google anything if their lives depended on it. It’s like everyone wants to be spoon fed. I’m also tired of the disrespect to artists who work on these dolls and having their work be stolen. I get you want a “pretty doll”. It’s just this capitalist mentality and consumerism BS makes people WANT WANT WANT without understanding WHY it’s so expensive in the first place. And, ultimately, it’s not a need. It’s a want. Artists are allowed to be compensated for their work.

Sorry, this is much longer than it needs to be. I’m just tired of misinformation going around.

Also, yes. I get extra annoyed when people say “BJD dolls”. It’s like saying ATM machine. I feel like some people think the dolls are just called BJD like…the acronym is the actual name and not an acronym. 🫠

What do y'all use for your doll/bjd galleries. I used to use flickr but it's such a nightmare now. I was thinking of using the tag system on tumblr perhaps?
