So, I’m on a mission to improve my skin and hair, and I figured I would blog about it.
A few weeks ago I went to the dermatologist and got prescribed 100mg spironolactone for hormonal acne. I’ve been taking it since April 4th at only 25mg twice daily (AM, PM). I’m going to up it to 50mg tomorrow (which would be one week). I wanted to start at a lower dose to see how I reacted to it, and to ease into it. The doc said I could do that. It’s kind of a weird medication, because it’s meant for hypertension originally, I can’t eat bananas apparently (huge bummer, I love bananas), and I’m supposed to stay ~super~ hydrated while taking it (which I already struggle with). So we will see how that goes. Drugs always scare me, but so far I seem to be fine... Haven’t noticed any results yet but she said it can take 1-3 months.
Next, I’ve bought a bunch of CeraVe products because every dermatologist I’ve ever been to has told me to, and so did the one I just went to. I always bought the off-brand version because I’m cheap, but I decided to get the real thing this time in case there’s a difference. I usually use almond oil on my face because I have really dry skin and oil has been the only thing that seems to work for me... But the dermatologist said I shouldn’t use oil because it’ll clog my pores... :/ So I’m going to try it her way and hope it doesn’t just make me want to scream (from having dry skin and trying to apply makeup to dry mummified skin). I like the products so far, but I just got them last night and I haven’t applied makeup with them on yet so we’ll see. Hopefully it regulates out my natural moisture and it won’t be an issue what products I do or don’t use.
Next, I bought this Aztec Secret clay mask. It hasn’t come in the mail yet so I haven’t used it, but when I was in Kansas City a friend we were staying with was using it and swears by it. She said it cleared up her acne and she only gets occasional break outs now and then. There’s also thousands of reviews on Amazon saying the same thing, so it seems promising. I know it’s generally not a great idea to mix products when you’re trying to solve a problem, because then you can’t tell what is working and it might even mix badly. But, I don’t really care. I use face masks all the time anyway (ones that probably don’t even work or might just be making my skin worse) so I wanted to just give this one a shot. You apparently mix it with raw apple cider vinegar which I already have. I can’t wait to try it! It’s supposed to be here on Wednesday.
Products mentioned:
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, 12 oz
CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion, 12 oz
CeraVe Moisturizing Facial Lotion PM, 3 oz
Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Deep Pore Cleansing, 1 lb
And finally, just now I bought these two castor oils. I didn’t really need to buy two, but I wanted the amber glass bottle and the applicators that came with this 1oz one, and I read that the black oil was better, so I bought it two. Figured I’ll run out eventually and need to refill. So apparently castor oil is supposed to be good for growing out hair?? I had no idea until I read Dani’s post about it. Can’t hurt to try! I want to grow out my brows mostly, but also my head hair and lashes. So hopefully it’s actually legit and not just a bogus natural “remedy” that doesn’t do anything. A lot of people are swearing by it online, so figured it couldn’t hurt to try. I’ll probably start these later this week when they come in the mail.
Products mentioned:
Tropic Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil, 4 oz
Organic Castor Oil - 100% USDA Certified Pure Cold Pressed Hexane free, 1oz
I’ll try to keep track of the results of all this. Anyone have any experience with these products?

Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment
Price: $25 / $59 / $82
Claims: SUPERMUD is our most advanced clearing treatment and #1 best-selling mud mask. Fights problem skin and skin imperfections with a blend of six acids, activated-x charcoal, and K-17 clay. The SUPER 6 Acid Blend helps loosen dead skin cells to exfoliate and sweep them away, leaving fresh, smooth skin behind.
Visibly, instantly clears the complexion. All you need is a thin layer.
We love it for:
Pores
Oiliness
Blemishes
Problem Skin
Key Benefits:
CLEARING. Visibly, instantly clears the complexion
CLARIFYING. Targets clogged pores, excess oil, and dead skin cells
PORE REFINING. Toxins and dirt are removed from the deep within the pores
This product tingles to let you know it is working. Skin may appear flushed for a short time. This is normal!
Ingredients:
Water: Primarily used as a solvent in cosmetics and personal care products in which it dissolves many of the ingredients that impart skin benefits, such as conditioning agents and cleansing agents. Water also forms emulsions in which the oil and water components of the product are combined to form creams and lotions.
Kaolin: A fine white clay powder; used to absorb water and oil secreted by the skin, including excess sebum.
Magnesium Aluminum Silicate: A naturally occurring mineral derived from refined and purified clay that is used primarily as a thickener in cosmetics and beauty products. It is naturally of a flaky, white consistency and is used most often as a filler. It is also important to note that Magnesium Aluminum Silicate has unusually large molecules; because of these large molecules, it is unable to be absorbed into the skin.
Mandelic Acid: A type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), also known as amygdalic acid. An effective exfoliant, more tolerable for those with sensitive skin. Is also light-sensitive and must be packaged in an opaque container to remain effective.
Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf: Derived from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree; used for its cooling, refreshing, aromatic properties. Provides natural anti-bacteria and antioxidant protection.
Tartaric Acid: A naturally-occurring crystalline organic acid found in many plants, including grapes and tamarinds. It is one of the chief acids in wine. Tartaric acid has antioxidant properties and is an alpha hydroxy acid.
Lactic Acid: Helps to control the pH of finished cosmetic products
Salicylic Acid: Also called beta hydroxy acid (BHA). Its primary benefit is as an exfoliant, helping shed dead skin in a way similar to how skin acts when we are younger. Because it has the ability to penetrate into the pore lining and exfoliate inside the pore as well as on the surface of skin, it is especially effective for reducing breakouts, including blackheads and whiteheads. In addition to these benefits, salicylic acid also has soothing properties to calm aggravated skin, can help minimize the appearance of an uneven skin tone, and has hydrating abilities that can result in smoother skin.
Glycolic Acid: An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) used to help maintain natural pH levels and gently exfoliate surface skin cells.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice: Extracted from the leaves of the aloe plant; used as a skin softener, anti-irritant, and moisture replenisher.
Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract: Used as a whitener, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and moisturizer. Helps control oil production, and helps calm and soothe acne-prone skin. It can be used to reduce dark age spots and whiten skin.
Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract: Extracted from the pulp of a cucumber; used for its soothing and moisture binding properties.
Hedera Helix (Ivy) Extract: Plant extract that can be sensitizing due to its astringent properties. Despite this, there’s no research demonstrating that tiny amounts of ivy extract applied via skincare products are harmful; however, there also is no reliable information on ivy’s benefits when applied to skin.
Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Leaf Extract: Topical application of comfrey has skin-soothing properties, but it is recommended only for short-term use and only then if you can be sure the amount of pyrrolizidine alkaloids is less than 100 micrograms per application. The alkaloid content means it has the potential to aggravate skin.
Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract: The extract from the flowers of the plant; has calming and soothing properties.
Peg-12 Dimethicone: A silicone-based polymer used to give formulas a smooth feel, promote spreadability, and add lubrication.
Caprylyl Glycol: Skin and hair conditioning agent that may be plant-derived or synthetic. Often used as part of a preservative blend in cosmetics.
Sodium Hydroxide: An inorganic compound used to control the pH levels or serve as a buffering agent. Has the ability to dissolve grease, oils, fats and protein based deposits. Considered a strong irritant.
Butylene Glycol: Commonly-used ingredient that has multiple functions in cosmetics, including as a texture enhancer. It’s similar to propylene glycol, but has a lighter texture.
Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil: Skin conditioning properties to help soothe dry.
Hectorite: A type of clay used in cosmetics that enhances texture by imparting a smooth, silky feel.
Hexylene Glycol: A preservative and solvent and viscosity agent. It is used to thin out heavy compositions and create a thinner, more spreadable product. It may be irritating to some skin types.
Glycerin: An emollient and humectant derived from vegetable oils that helps skin retain moisture.
Calendula Officinalis Extract: Extracted from the flower of the plant; contains carotenoids and saponin. Used for its soothing and hydrating properties.
Maltodextrin: A binding agent. May increase anti-aging properties of other ingredients when used in combination with them. It also serves as a film former and suspending agent.
Ethylhexylglycerin: A synthetic skin-softening agent also used as a preservative, a carrier, or suspending agent for other preservatives such as phenoxyethanol.
Xanthan Gum: Natural ingredient used as a thickening agent, texture enhancer, and to stabilize emulsions, which is a general term for mixtures of unlike substances such as oil and water.
Fragrance (Parfum): One or a blend of volatile and/or fragrant plant oils (or synthetically derived oils) that impart aroma and odor to products. These are often skin sensitizers because they are composed of hundreds of individual chemical components. Fragrance is a leading source of sensitivity to cosmetics.
Limonene: Colorless liquid with a light, fresh, and sweet citrus odor used to make fragrances and flavors. It is naturally occurring substance found in many citrus fruits.
Benzyl Benzoate: A clear, colorless liquid with a pleasant aroma. Mainly used as a fragrance ingredient and solvent (helps other ingredients dissolve into a solution).
Linalool: Fragrant component of lavender and coriander that can be a potent skin sensitizer. Colorless liquid with a soft, sweet odor.
Phenoxyethanol: A glycol ether and bactericide (that functions as a disinfectant, antiseptic or antibiotic) that is primarily used as a preservative. It is also seen as a fragrance additive.
Potassium Sorbate: Used as a preservative, almost always used in conjunction with other preservatives.
Sodium Benzoate: A preservative.
Iron Oxides: Natural oxides of iron (iron combined with oxygen); pigments are used to enhance colors in cosmetics.
Pyruvic Acid: Used as a medium chemical peeling agent in subjects with inflammatory acne, moderate acne scars, greasy skin, actinic keratosis, and warts.
My Thoughts: Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment is pretty amazing. It comes in a sample size squeeze tube. I love that I can buy it in 3 different sizes. I was given a sample size from my sister in law. Its a white squeeze tube with sliver lettering. The only drawback with the packaging is that towards the end of its life it was hard to squeeze the product out. I finally cut it open to use the rest of it and I found there was still a lot of product left that should have been able to squeeze out.
Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment when wet its a charcoal grey color with a mud texture. I apply with a brush and put a good even thin layer on. It does have a nice cooling sensation with eucalyptus and mint scent. I leave it on until it hardens which is about 10 minuties. I can tell when its harden not only by feel, but the look since the mask turns a light grey and around my pores these tiny dots start to form.
Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment is easy to remove with water, the mud doesn’t stick to my skin it just slides right off. If I put a thick layer on it is harder to wash off. My face immediately feels clean and fresh. It pulls all the gunk and oil from my pores on the first use.
Would I purchase Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment? I am still on the fence, if I did it would be at the lowest price point one they have. The only reason I am on the fence is my sister in law uses a similar mask already (thats why she gave me Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment in the first place). She uses a mixture of the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay with Apple Cider Vinegar which is a lot cheaper and works just as great as Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment.
Pros:
Comes in 3 different sizes
Sample size
White squeeze tube with sliver lettering
Charcoal grey when wet
Mud texture
Apply thin layer
Cooling sensation
Eucalyptus & mint scent
Hardens changes color to light grey & creates tiny dots around pores
Easy to remove with water
Left with a fresh & clean face
Removes gunk & oil
Cons:
Still a lot of product left when I cut it open
Thick layer can be harder to wash off
Expensive

my skincare routine :>
this is for the lovely anon that asked about it; i have combo skin and acne, a lot of which i think is hormonal
morning routine:
for starters, i wash my face in the morning, right now i am using the philosophy exfoliating facial wash or i’ll use the philosophy purity facial wash ; these are both nice, but i am only using them because i got em in a gift set, when they run out i am probably going to search for a greener and cheaper face wash. when i can remember to use it, i use my foreo luna mini 2 (i found mine new in the box on ebay for $10!).
after i wash my face i use the ordinary’s hyaluronic acid serum, spritz this rosewater and glycerin spray on, then moisturize with jojoba oil. if i’m going out for the day, i’ll use this 50spf sunscreen on my face/exposed skin on my body.
night time routine:
if i’m NOT wearing foundation or concealer, but i am wearing other makeup, i double cleanse. i take my makeup off with the soap and glory peaches and clean milk cleanser, and then wash my face (with my hands, not my luna) with this alba botanica detox cleanser. this is pretty nice, i got it as a christmas gift but i might shop around for cheaper healthy foaming cleansers. if i AM wearing foundation or concealer, i triple cleanse. i just oil cleanse with olive oil: i massage some olive oil all over my face while my water gets real hot, then i soak a wash cloth in the hot water, ring it out, let it sit on my face for a second and rub everything off my face. then i go to the milk cleanser, and then detox cleanser. if i am not wearing ANY makeup, i just wash with my luna and the purity cleanser.
after i cleanse, i have two products that i use on alternating days, except the days where i face mask. i either use the ordinary’s glycolic acid toner, or if i used that the day before then i use the ordinary’s vitamin c in 30% silicone. after either step i use the rosewater again. then i moisturize with rosehip oil and call it a night.
face masks:
on wednesday nights, i use the ordinary’s AHA/BHA peel for 10 minutes (usually more like 8, but the directions say no more than 10)
on sunday’s i use the aztec secret indian healing clay mask, mixed with apple cider vinegar. i apply a pretty thick layer, and then it takes a couple hours to dry and you can’t move your face. usually, i put it on in the evening time after i either oil my hair or put olaplex in my hair, because sunday’s are wash and shave days so the mask can dry while my hair does it’s pre-shower pre-shampoo thang.
also, my favorite chapstick is this rose and vanilla one by soothing touch, but i accidentally melted it in the dryer so i’ve been using this badger company vanilla one as backup.
also! i have a 64oz water bottle i always have with me and drinking water is such a big help... i used to never drink water and my skin (among other things) improved SO much once i started drinking enough water.
sorry this is long but i hope you liked :3. feel free to send any questions about stuff!! i love skincare and haircare <3

Kokum Butter for Skin: Why It's Your Next Best Thing
Introduction
Kokum butter is a natural moisturizer with some pretty incredible benefits. The list of possible kokum butter benefits it provides is long, and it's also been used for centuries in India as a remedy for many different ailments. While you can buy kokum butter online and at some specialty stores, most people don't know that they can also use this multi-faceted moisturizer on their skin and hair — not just to treat dryness but also to reduce itching, soothe sunburns, improve digestion and more. Read on to learn more about why kokum butter makes such an excellent skincare product:
Kokum butter is extracted from the seeds of kokum trees.
Kokum butter is extracted from the seeds of kokum trees, which are native to India. Kokum butter has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine and skin care products.
Kokum butter looks like a pale yellow-orange color. It's solid at room temperature, but melts easily when applied to your skin or hair. When you first open up a jar of kokum butter, you'll notice its distinct sweet smell, reminiscent of caramel or maple syrup. Kokum butter has been described as feeling silky and light on the skin—perfect for dry areas like elbows and knees!
Kokum Butter for Skin
Kokum butter is a natural moisturizer that helps to reduce dryness and the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars. It's especially effective for dry skin because it works like an intensive treatment for your face, hair, hands and body. In addition to being an excellent emollient (a substance that softens and smooths the skin), kokum butter also acts as an antioxidant that helps heal wounds faster. If you are looking for ways to improve the condition of your skin without using synthetic chemicals or harsh chemicals on your face or body then this may be exactly what you need!
Kokum butter has been known since ancient times for its healing properties when applied topically on wounds--and today modern science confirms these claims about how quickly it heals wounds compared with other types of ointments available at pharmacies today.* As mentioned above, kokum butter has also been shown through scientific studies done recently at major universities across America including Harvard University where researchers found after conducting experiments involving mice
This Is How to Use It
You can use kokum butter as a moisturizer, a body butter, or as a hair mask. Another way to get the most out of your kokum butter is to use it as a lip balm! If you are using it on your skin, make sure you read the directions on how much water should go into making a consistency that will work best for your particular skin type.
As with all natural products and their ingredients, there are some precautions that need to be taken when using kokum butter. It has been known to cause allergic reactions in some people so if you have sensitive skin or allergies then talk to your doctor before trying out this product.
The list of possible benefits is long.
It’s great for acne sufferers because it contains anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness caused by acne breakouts. When you use kokum butter regularly as part of your skincare regimen, you may find that your blemishes heal faster and don’t look as angry after a few weeks of use!
Kokum butter is also known as “nature’s Botox” due to its ability to soften the appearance of fine lines when applied topically on the face or body (the latter being preferable). If there are areas on your body where stretch marks have formed over time—whether from pregnancy or weight loss/gain—then this butter will help smooth them out so they fade away more quickly than before! Finally, if you suffer from rosacea (redness around the nose), kokum butter may prove helpful since some studies show positive effects when combined with another type called Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask: A Review by Beauty MNL Blogger Noreen!
Here's how to use kokum butter on your skin and hair.
For the most part, you can use kokum butter just like any other oil or butter. Here are a few ideas:
· Use as a deep conditioner for your hair. Just apply a small amount of kokum butter to the tips of your hair and rub it in from root to tip (source).
· Put some on your lips! Kokum butter has been known to make lips soft and smooth (source).
· Rub it into dry areas of skin for relief from itching or flaking. It's especially useful for eczema—causing less inflammation than many other moisturizers out there.
· Use as an intensive hand treatment to keep dryness at bay during winter months (source). Make sure not to get it on clothing because it stains! The same goes with using kokum butter as a body butter—you don't want white splotches all over everything you own!
Conclusion
Kokum butter is an amazing ingredient that can be used to treat a variety of skin and hair conditions. It’s rich in vitamins A and C, which help promote smooth, glowing skin while also fighting signs of aging like wrinkles. This butter also contains high levels of fatty acids like oleic acid that moisturize dry skin without making it oily or greasy. As if all of this wasn’t enough, kokum also promotes hair growth by improving circulation around follicles as well as providing nutrients for healthy looking locks!

Hey Guys!
I’ve really been delaying this post for quite some time. Truth is, I’ve just been lazy and not in the mood to write. However, I’m forcing myself to get it done because “discipline“. If you’re an OG (original) follower you would have seen that I had a strict schedule of posting on Sundays & Wednesdays. Somehow, that changed and I can barely post once a week. Nonetheless, what’s been up with my hair?
I may have mentioned before how much of a task my hair is to deal with. It’s been even harder to retain moisture especially living in a tropical environment. During the summer I decided to make my load easier by doing a protective style, so I tried out faux locs for the first time. After taking them out I still wasn’t in the mood to deal with my hair so, a week later it was time for another protective style!
Protective Style
For this protective style I decided on Bob Braids. The longer braids usually keep me hot, and it’s difficult to tie up for sleeping/showering. I got this style from Pinterest, but it’s also quite popular on IG from a girl who does faux locs. Originally I wanted to incorporate grey/silver hair in my braids, as well as purple rubber bands on the ends. However, I wasn’t sure how “professional” it would have been in a work setting. I was also scheduled to travel for work the following week.
Thankfully, after the stiffness wore off it was quite easy to pull the braids back into one and sleep in. While I had in the braids I would oil my scalp occasionally with a mixture of oils (Jojoba, Castor, Olive). Apart from that I didn’t do much and didn’t have any problems. Using the excuse of my thick hair, I used four and a half packs to achieve this style. I kept them in for four weeks, because I was ready to wash my hair from buildup. However, I think they could have stretched to another week or two.
Hair Update
New Hairstyle
I still can’t get my hair up in one BUT I can get a FROHAWK! Honestly, I didn’t even think of this style, but I’m so happy for something new. I used Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed gel and a hard brush to get the sides up, then my jumbo bobby pins to keep everything in place. I had a twist out from the day before so I didn’t need to do anything to the top.

I didn’t do a length check per se but after combing out my hair from the braids I realized that my hair could indeed go into one. Maybe with a bit more stretching I could accomplish this. It’s not where I thought it would be after almost two years, but it’s slowly getting there.
Products I’ve Been Using
Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Shampoo
TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask
Aunt Jackie’s Quench Leave-in Conditioner
EDEN Body Works Curl Defining Cream
See post here: Wash Day + TwistOuts ft. New Hair Products
Tempted To Try
Aztec Secrets Indian Healing Clay for a clay mask – It seems to bring out curl definition and gives a deep clean
Rice Water Treatment – Apparently aids in hair growth
If I do try these methods, I’ll be sure to update you guys. Gotta do my research first and determine if they actually work on 4C hair. I also want to invest in some more TGIN products, but the prices *phew*.
FYI: I uploaded videos on IGTV *lol*
Leave any tips or suggestions you may have in the comments below!
Protective Style + Hair Update Hey Guys! I've really been delaying this post for quite some time. Truth is, I've just been lazy and not in the mood to write.
