Finding My Next Adventure in Shenandoah National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views across the ridges and mountains present of the Northern Blue Ridge at a Bearfence Mountain overlook. This is in Shenandoah National Park. One can see a slight outline of the Skyline Drive as it weaves its way through the mountainsides and gaps.

High Mojave Desert Under Overcast Skies (Joshua Tree National Park)
flickr
High Mojave Desert Under Overcast Skies (Joshua Tree National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: At an exhibit pullout along the Pinto Basin Road in Joshua Tree National Park. The view is looking to the southwest across a varied open plain of desert plant-life with yucca plants, cactus and creosote bushes. Taking advantage of some high ground that I was located on, I decided to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward and create more of a sweeping view across this national park landscape. I also wanted to minimize what I felt was more of a negative space with the overcast skies.

A Personal Photo Assignment in Pinnacles National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the High Peaks Trail with a view looking southwest and down to more pinnacle formations present in this part of Pinnacles National Park. My thought on composing this image was to zoom in with the focal length to this one formation that included The Fingers and Resurrection wall. I wanted to have some of the nearby landscape to add to the setting of the image captured. I did have to watch the exposure, given the brightness from the late morning sun as there were still shadows cast in some portions of the area to my front. The rest was later making adjustments with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

My Time With Things Natural at Mono Lake by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views tufa formations and plant-life present in the South Tufa area of Mono Lake. Given the haze in the skies above from nearby wildfires, I decided to compose the image by focusing on the tufa formations and centering that in the image. That would help to minimize what I felt was more of a negative space with the skies. Mono Lake-75

Taking Time Out to Explore Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views of hoodoos and other eroded formations in the Devils Garden of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. My thought on composing this image was to use the nearby wall as a partial frame to direct the eye to the hoodoo next to it. The overcast skies would be that backdrop to add a color contrast and also highlight the hoodoo.

Snowcapped Mountains in Colorado by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A plane window view looking to the southwest while on a flight to Salt Lake City. My thinking in composing this image was to use the airplane engine as a layered approach to draw the eye into the image of the earth below with the mountains and its ridges and peaks stretching off to a distant horizon. That would in turn then be balanced with the blue skies above. I closed down on the aperture to allow me to bring more of the setting into focus, from near too far.

You Keep Me Wild With Your Rivers and Mountains! (Denali National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking to the southwest across the Teklanika River at the namesake rest stop and overlook to more distant mountain peaks in Denali National Park & Preserve. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 3 and then used the ClearView tool to reduce some of the haze present.

This Time in Canyonlands National Park I Hiked to Explore the Island in the Sky (Black & White) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A conversion to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 2 where I used some color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.
