For a lot of us, we reminisce about the “good ole days”. Roads and mountain towns were less crowded. The powder lasted longer. The sports of snowboarding and skiing were purer. The list for many just keeps going, but, let’s be honest… change is painful. Instead of focusing on what doesn’t exist anymore, how about looking at what cool things are happening NOW? One of these amazing revolutions is the Upslope Brewing Backcountry Tap Room. A refreshing concept of hiking three miles into the wilderness with a tap room awaiting you. I don’t know about you but that sounds fun to us!

A Cultural Shift of recreational permits

Only in its third year, the backcountry tap room is definitely a new exciting idea. Why? Well, it comes down to the U.S. Forest Service attempting to modernize the special-use permit. Their goal is to attract younger visitors, groups, non-profits and schools to explore public lands. With this change in thinking, it has allowed businesses and groups like Upslope Brewing to create events such as the backcountry tap room. Though both the parking and beer distribution locations are on private land, all 2,000 people that showed up in the inaugural year had to hike through U.S. Forest Service lands to get there!

Adventure in the great outdoors is all about experiencing different things. In keeping with that theme, EVERY year this shindig is located somewhere different. For the Backcountry Tap Room 2017 edition, the location is Granby Ranch. Located between the famed Winter Park Ski Resort and the massive Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s an ideal venue for the three mile hike ending at the top of Granby Ranch. Attendees receive one can of Upslope’s Outside Denali India Pale Ale and up to two cans of Upslope’s year-round styles. There’s games, food for purchase, and leashed furry friends are always welcome.

In conjunction with partner Outside Magazine and to celebrate their 40th anniversary of inspiring adventure into the wilderness, Upslope Brewing is releasing a limited edition brew called Denali India Pale Ale. Part of the rotating Tap Room Series, it’s brewed with Denali hops and features a topographic overlay with a custom Outside Label.

We LOVE to see a successful event happening in the wilderness but at the same time we need to be very aware of the environment’s fragility. That’s why it makes us incredibly happy that Upslope Brewing will take all proceeds from this extravaganza and donate 100% to the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics (LNT). This money will focus on Colorado-based 2018 “Hot Spots” in public lands that have sustained damage from overuse. Don’t want to pay the $10? You have the option to participate in a LNT volunteer day to waive the fee. Either way, you’re helping a great cause!

Risk Takers and Visionaries Often Find Themselves Outside and Surrounded by Mountains! (Denali National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view across the tundra landscape in this part of Denali National Park, looking to the southwest and foothill mountains and peaks of the Alaska Range, with the hidden in clouds, snowcapped peaks of Denali rising above. While I could have worked some angles in composing this image, I decided to keep more of an even, leveled on view and have some "negative space" above the portion of Denali hidden in clouds. My feeling is that the centered up view had more of a balance. I could also clear up some of the clouds working with the ClearView Plus tool in DxO PhotoLab 3, The rest was I did some making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation for the image captured.
