The Artistic Legacy of Egon Schiele: Exploring His Landscapes
The Artistic Legacy of Egon Schiele: A Glimpse into His Landscapes Egon Schiele, the renowned Austrian Expressionist, is celebrated for his intense and provocative approach to art, but his career was tragically brief. He was only 28 years old when he succumbed to the flu pandemic of 1918, a premature end that has since contributed to his status as an emblem of the vibrant yet tumultuous Viennese…

Stephanie Hollenstein (18 July 1886 in Lustenau – 24 May 1944 in Vienna) was an Austrian Expressionist landscape and still-life painter.
_ post inspired by @the role of the artist POST
From the Admin: Was very excited and grateful to learn about this artist, then I've google her name and read the other part of her wikipedia entry.
Now I feel conflicted:
- To post about her, and "celebrate" a memory of a nazi?
- not to post and therefore erase/ignore yet enough woman artist....
Also, if I'm to be totally honest herstory sounds very interesting and impressive. But she was on the wrong side. #PalianSHoW
From the Wikipedia:
(*Sadly, she was) A member of the Nazi Party, Hollenstein was lesbian and tried to defend fellow-artists against charges of degeneracy, though usually without success.
(...)
At the beginning of World War I, she took a medical training course and, in 1915, went to Vorarlberg, where she joined the Standschützen under the name "Stephan Hollenstein". Although her comrades-in-arms were aware of the deception, her superiors did not discover it for several months; at which time she was sent home.
After the war, she lived in Vienna with her companion, Franziska Groß (1900-1973), who later became a doctor.

(...)
In the 1930s, she was attracted to the "Männlichkeitskult" (Masculinity Cult) and the military ideals promoted by the Fascists.
She became a secret member of the Nazi Party (when it was still officially banned in Austria)
(...)
During her tenure, she defended the sculptor, Albert Bechtold [de], and others against charges that their art was "Degenerate"; unsuccessfully for the most part. An application for the title of "Professor" was denied on the grounds that she was a strictly local artist whose work often did not set a good example. | 🖼 3. Landscape with Inn, ca 1930s

She resigned her position for health reasons. The following year, she suffered a heart attack and died shortly after. Her remains were returned to Lustenau for burial. Via Wikipedia

During our rewatch, we took note of the art shown and mentioned in the pilot, and we wanted to share. Did we miss any? Do you have any thoughts about how these references could be interpreted? How do you think Armand and Louis go about picking the art for their penthouse in Dubai?

Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion
Francis Bacon, 1944
Bacon was an Irish figurative painter, known for his raw, unsettling imagery and a number of triptychs and diptychs among his work. At a time when being gay was a criminal offense, Bacon was open about his sexuality, and was cast out by his family at 16 for this reason. He destroyed many of his early works, but about 590 still survive. The Tate, where these paintings are displayed, says this about the work: "Francis Bacon titled this work after the figures often featured in Christian paintings witnessing the death of Jesus. But he said the creatures represented the avenging Furies from Greek mythology. The Furies punish those who go against the natural order. In Aeschylus’s tragedy The Eumenides, for example, they pursue a man who has murdered his mother. Bacon first exhibited this painting in April 1945, towards the end of the Second World War. For some, it reflects the horror of the war and the Holocaust in a world lacking guiding principles."

Der Sumpf - Alfred Kubin
1903-1905
Austrian artist and printmaker, Alfred Kubin, is known for his involvement in the symbolist and expressionist movement (early 20th century) and his illustrations for german translations of Edgar Allen Poe poems. Der Sumpf was made using pen and ink on cadastral paper. Kubin was heavily inspired by Francisco De Goya and Max Klinger, as evident by some of his dark, nightmarish pieces such as "Self Reflection, c 1901-1902"
Translated into English the title is "The Swamp"
