One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Grey Redux
My Fair Lady / Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle
A real classic today. The three tiers on the collar mirror the three-tiered skirt, and both feature similar scalloped edges with floral embroidered decoration. I'm struck by the weight of the fabric, which can be seen in the close-up photo: it has some real heft and looks as if it might be wool. A white lace collar peeks out at the top. The outfit is completed with a rather schoolgirlish black hair bow and pointy black boots, which are mostly not visible under the skirt.
The signature on the sketch reveals that this costume was designed by Cecil Beaton, although Michael Neuwirth also worked on the film, according to IMDB.
The play on which this movie was based was published in 1912, but the costuming strikes me as just a few years earlier. The visible zipper line in the back of this dress isn't very period, although zippers were around by then.

Me normally: Let people love what they love
Me, after a Test Match Special commentator expresses their belief that the new All Creatures Great and Small is somehow "better" than the 1978 version: This is pure insanity and TMS can no longer be trusted on anything, how can they even be trusted to know about cricket, do they have no TASTE
#Look it's fine that this show exists and people will watch it and like it and that's ok maybe it's just not for me#But that was like a statement purely designed to piss me off#There were lots of issues with the 1978 adaptation! I still vastly preferred the books any day!#And I actually initially had high hopes for the new one because they at least cast a Scot (albeit a Highlander not a Clydesider) as James#And the actors at least looked a little bit younger than Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy#And thank god Helen actually sounds like she's a farmer's daughter and doesn't speak RP!#But from the half hour I've seen of it I've had to write off this new adaptation#For two major reasons#First of all there's Siegfried#Siegfried is one of the key central aspects of the vibe of the books and therefore key to any adaptation#Robert Hardy was too short and too old for the part but he lived and breathed the character#The twinkle in the eye bouncing off the walls and in and out of rooms followed by half a dozen dogs utterly full of life even when angry#But this new Siegfried is just sort of... Eeyore-esque; he comes into a room and you can see the flowers droop and the set turn grey#Siegfried was angry Siegfried was happy and the historical character he was based on was no stranger to melancholy#Since Donald Sinclair did commit suicide or rather self-euthanasia after Alf Wight and his own wife Audrey died#But this slow grumbly figure in the new adaptation is not Siegfried Farnon- the book character didn't grumble more often he exploded#And why did the adaptation give him a dead wife that's so weird? What could that possibly add to the source material?#And this brings me onto my second problem which is to do with women and age#Firstly I have no idea why they aged down Mrs Hall or at least made her look younger than a woman her age would have back then#But what really drove me mad was when Heriot goes out to see some old woman hill farmer in the episode I saw#And this woman is far too clean and young-looking and you can see that she's wearing 'natural' look make-up#And a perfect set of clothes that looked like they were straight out of the House of Bruar autumn collection catalogue#Say what you like about the 1978 adaptation but old women looked like old women regardless of whether or not they wore make-up#It may be that the better quality of television screens means that the 'natural look' shows up on screen more clearly than it would have#But natural look make-up was not really a thing in the 1930s and for old women Yorkshire hill farmers I doubt they'd have much on at all#They just don't seem to be capable of allowing people to look old and wrinkled and real or have bad teeth or unattractive clothes#And everything is far too tidy- everybody looks far too perfectly country and quaint#Anyway the moral of this story is of course that I always recommend reading the books because they're much better#than any tv adaptation; but if forced to choose at least the 1970s one felt real and yet didn't have to be grim either#Ok that's my rant over please do feel free to enjoy the show I just got annoyed because the opinion was expressed on TMS

Round 12— The Note.
("I'm not sorry but thank you for enduring me as long as you did. That's more than I'd ever ask of you." •Flor towards Rosca, in her dreams. ) — @season39 . To clear up about Rosca and her status ~quite short.
@junebluues , @ivanttakethis , @rockwgooglyeyes , @bluemoonscape , @apriciticreveries , @alien-til-i-stage , @starry-skiez , @skyisjusthere , @teapotuser , @4listr (Azure mention), & others. / Toxic yuri lets gooooo
The note wasn't able to be read by Flor.
She was too late, but she knew she would be late. She was deliberately late. Because she also knew that she would be dead.
She knew, and she waited for it, because?
Even if a clown is well liked and loved and had her small (or rather big? A lot of them were cheering her on, and some interviewers were asking me questions about her and how I felt) fandom. Even if that is so, they'll always fall down.
It happened with the black haired and color related name (what was his name? Cerulean? Blue? Water..? Oh who cares. Too much has happened and it's such a hassle).
And it has now happened to her clown.
Which she expected from the.. start, in all honesty.
She knew that this would happen.
Yet, she still made a note. Just to tell her (or for others to know. That must be it)
“You.. ah,
My silly billy.
One makes mistakes; that is life.
You gravely thought you'd win? You thought like that from the start, either way. Only from a little praise, that me and the others would give you.
You're so stupid. And I say that with affection.
You're like a dog. I like dogs... But not that much anymore. You're like my fans in the most.. unusual way ever.
...
You were a wonderful experimental, experience.”
•~ Rosca.
Is what the note says.
And it'll stay unread for whatever time. Unless someone finds it. If they do?
It's not her matter to say. Because, Flor is dead.
The jester, dead in the weak yet adored castle while the queen— the ruler of said jester's heart walks away from the back stage to head back to her own castle; strong but not as well- adored as Alien Stage is.
It's truly.. weird.
Absurd (she drops the note anyways, she wants to see if someone will find it)
______________
Who will find the note?
Will it be Tov, Nyx, or someone else? Or maybe no one at all?

Anime-type art - but it probably only looks that way because I left my lines there. I also am terrible at drawing braids but I always want to draw Rook. Characters are Rook and Surai from Kingdom of Runes by Audrey Grey

Wilford: Please remember that there will be a company-wide New Year's Eve party this evening. And everyone is invited.
Ben: What happens if we decline?
Wilford: I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that, Ben.
Javi: But what if we can't make it?
Wilford: Lets just say as your employer I will be greatly disappointed if you fail to arrive.
Boki: You mean you will cut our pay?
Wilford: Or...other essential things.
Ruth: What will be happening at this event?
Wilford: We dance, we drink champagne, we play a few rounds of Jenga, and then we all kiss at midnight.
Audrey: We...all kiss?
Wilford: Yes.
Jinju: All of us?
Wilford: Yes.
Commander Grey: Like...all at once?
Wilford: Yes, God, am I the only one who's ever been to one of these parties before? We dance with abandon, we drink with gusto, we kiss everyone we can reach at midnight, which is why I would like Audrey on my left, Melanie on my right. And Kevin, if you behave you can--
Melanie: Don't get your hopes up, Joseph. I'm not going to your stupid party.
Wilford: Why not?! Give me one good reason.
Melanie: Because it's not New Year's Eve.
Wilford:...Are you sure?
Ben: Of course, she's sure, you idiot.
Wilford: ...
Wilford: Kevin, what is today's date?
Kevin: January 1st.
Wilford:
Ruth: I'm afraid you missed it, Sir.
Audrey: Better luck next year, Joe.
Javi: Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow, boss, but I've got plans tonight.
Boki: You mean we don't get to go dance and drink and kiss again?
Wilford: Now wait just a minute--what does he mean AGAIN?!
Ben:
Javi:
Boki:
Ruth:
Audrey:
Jinju:
Commander Grey:
Kevin:
Wilford: Melanie?! Did you all have a New Year's Eve Party without me?!
Melanie: ...maybe.
Wilford: How could you?!
Melanie: Very easily since you don't even know how to read a calendar.
*Bonus*
Wilford: I'm going to take Jupiter and have my own Night After New Year's Eve Party.
Kevin: Why don't you just call it a New Year's Party, Sir? It's still a special night, the first night of the new year--well, I guess technically it's the first full night of the new year because last night was the first night. Starting at midnight. You know, when you usually stay up to greet the new year--
Wilford: Oh, shut up! My party is gonna be so much better than yours!
Melanie: I doubt that. The Headwoods hosted.
Wilford: What does that even mean?!
Ben: It means we all got high, you moron. And we put glitter and nitro-glycerin in a bunch of beakers and drank it with some railmans ale. And Audrey taught us all how to dance to a song called Cotton-Eyed Joe. And then we played Twister for four hours while the Headwoods went around poking us with scalpels and sticking cotton swabs in our mouths asking for DNA.
Boki: It was amazing.
Jinju: They served charred kale. I love charred kale.
Audrey: I liked the part where we got to experiment on each other.
Javi: I didn't. They said they'd run out of buccal swabs.
Commander Grey: What kind did they use on you then? I don't remember much after the fireworks came out of the cake--
Ruth: I rather enjoyed that bit myself. I always like a good sparkler or two.
Boki: And the song! I love it when we sing that song!
Wilford: Just stop! I've heard enough. Come on Jupiter. We don't need these traitors.
Melanie: I think my favorite part was the balloons. And watching Jupiter chase them. All. Night. Long.
Wilford: *anguished scream* NNNNOOOOOO!
