Atsabe and around Letefoho, Ermera Municipality
One of the best things about volunteering at HAMNASA, a local NGO in Timor-Leste, is heading out on the road with them. They run community development activities in small villages and hamlets, giving me the opportunity to visit places that few other malae (foreigners) have been to. I have to work, taking photos and making videos, plus introducing myself to large groups in the local language…

*Among the stars and bones spoilers*
Ok so I’m a huge fan of the among the stars and bones podcast. It’s excellent, but I just listened to the prequel episodes and the visceral gut wrenching response I had when Gordon fucking price started singing? Ugh. I hate that guy so much.
Honestly sign of some amazing writing that I can hate the guy the deeply in only 10 episodes 😂

Wayside Chapel 10th January 2023
Morning January 10
Genesis 6:5-6 5The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. 6The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.
'Nacham'means comforting sorrow, regret, pity. That describes God's heart over man's condition in that day. Seeing man choose sin and its destructiveness, grieved the heart of God. It 'atsab'(pained or vexed) God's heart to see our choices. Something had to be done to stop man from torturing himself and others (vs. 11). A cleansing of the earth had to take place. I have the same feeling, to a degree, when I must spank my children. I cry and hurt with them, but I know it will be better for us all in the future. This verse reveals the heart of God against sin and what it does to us through our own choices. God does things that He knows will be painful to Him and to His creation at times but with a good end in mind.
Sin had mastered most of mankind, like it mastered Cain. God works to bring about the least amount of pain within the boundaries of His justice. He works with this end in mind, bringing many sons to glory. The flood came to spare mankind from themselves. At times we question God's justice, but we can always be sure that His heart is for mankind whom He has made in His image. It was with a grieved heart full of pain that He directed Noah to build the ark. It will be with a grieved heart that the next great purging of the earth takes place by fire (2Peter 3:7-12) under similar conditions among mankind. We are watching the rapid erosion of man's thoughts and inclinations. As it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.
Consider: Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23)

19 grams Adventskalender: 23. Türchen "Koileki", Osttimor
19 grams Adventskalender: 23.

Tiarlelo, Ermera Municipality
About twenty minutes drive downhill from Atsabe is the village of Tiarlelo. This was one of my favourite places I’d visited in Timor-Leste to this point. It was a peaceful, friendly, and beautifully located place, surrounded by mountains. This is well off the tourist path. I was there supporting the local NGO HAMNASA with their community engagement activities, taking photos and making…

“I managed to finish up at the Alpha site and get back here for a late dinner out in the central shaft. And I was sitting here when the clouds parted. It was dinner time by our clock, but midday on the surface above. And the light of Scorpii shone down through a translucent ceiling. But it wasn’t merely translucent. Somehow, I don’t know how, it broke the light and scattered it in arcs and rainbows, rebounding off projections on the pillars and guardrails on each level to bounce back a hundred times.
The patterns… I…I can’t describe them. I mean I’ve seen holographic images and laser symphonies and all that. I’ve seen what the human mind can conceive. And you remember what the sun setting behind the crystal structures on Vega was like. But this was something else. This was some sort of blending of nature and physics with the creativity of a conscious mind. And it elevated both.
The images changed with the movement of the sun across the sky, shifting like an old-fashioned kaleidoscope. And for, I don’t know, 20 minutes, there was nothing but dead silence in that chamber. There’d been all kinds of activity going on at levels above and below and it all just…stopped. I didn’t really notice, but people came out of the living quarters and out of the alpha site tunnel and everyone just… stood there. It was one of those perfect moments.
When the clouds came back we all sort of looked at each other. Little smiles. Then after a few moments, we all just drifted back to what we’d been doing. I had to reheat the ration pack, which made it even less palatable than it was before, but it was totally worth it. I didn’t think to get a recorder going, but you might want to check through general uploads from other members of the team in the data packet. Someone would’ve caught it.
No way that a recording could do it justice though.
And this is what we came here to learn. Something about who these people were that is much more eloquent than their technology. I mean whatever they might be able to do, or how much faster they can travel beyond light speed than us, how they can turn a planet from a storm-raging toxic permanent night to a habitable haven means nothing to me next to the knowledge I got in those 20 minutes.
I learnt something about what the Proximans think of beauty and what it means to them. I mean… they built this colony city, attached it to a ship and sent it god alone knows how far through space. It would have taken forever to construct it, not to mention the space and energy and resources that went into something this large. And they did so knowing they were sending it to burrow into a dark hole on a dark world where it would be in shadow for, who knows, fifty years at least?
But they still thought it important enough, still thought it crucial enough, to create a thing of beauty, something that can’t help but lift the spirit when you see it, against the day when they would be able to clear this sky and have the light of their new sun fall on the ceiling dome and send a well of colour and light down to what was once the darkest of places. That speaks of a people with poetry in their soul.”

Podcast Recommendations:
Down
Down is a 24-part science-fiction series about an expedition into a newly-discovered Antarctic trench, dubbed The Bottomless Pit. The company-backed research submarine Virgil is elegant, state-of-the-art, and capable of withstanding enormous pressures. The same cannot be said for her crew.
Try this podcast if you like:
Marscorp: Down and Marscorp are both made by Definitely human, and they both have excellent voice acting and some very funny moments. Marscorp is more of a comedy than Down, but I would still recommend trying it out. You will like it.
Among the Stars and Bones: Down has a similar feeling of exploration as ATSAB. Have I mentioned the voice acting?
Wolf 359: I know, I know, space is the not the same as the ocean, but Down crew reminded me a lot of the Wolf 359 crew. Its a small group of lovable and eccentric people and maybe a monster that can shapeshift. If you liked Wolf 359 for the people, you'll like Down.

Ethiopian Aricha and Timor-Leste Atsabe, Flight Coffee
Price: $21 (Aricha) and $16 (Atsabe) for 250g
Got these from Flight Coffee a couple of weeks ago! I think the first single origin filter coffee I ever tried at home was also a Yirgacheffe (back in March 2020) which I grew to love, and I don't think I've had one since! So I was pretty happy when I saw Flight Coffee had one, and am enjoying it so far! Haven't opened the one from Timor- Leste yet, but I hope to sometime this week!
