I normally don't talk about personal stuff on here but like in the previous year I wanted do a little recap and give shoutouts to some lovely people 🧡

It hasn't been an easy year for me, I started a new job which has been stressful and annihilated my work-life balance which resulted in me being sick a lot & just being stressed for most of the year lol. I barely found time to maintain this blog which may not seem like it on the outside since I somehow managed to frequently post but it's been difficult. I know I don't have to be online 24/7 but the fear of slipping into irrelevancy due to lack of content remains. I didn't have much time to watch bls & asian shows in general which I still consider my safe space and escapism so I'm resentful that I didn't get to fully take in and enjoy the things I'm passionate about and make content about them like I did in the previous years. That being said thank god for all the weekend shows that I did manage to watch and fully focus on like Only Friends and now Cooking Crush and Cherry Magic. Those have been life savers lol and also thank god for all the talented creators who gave us tons of content; I will mention some of them below.

But aside from my personal schedule and despite not watching a lot of stuff, I still tried to keep an eye on what's going on in the BL world for my monthly breakdowns, which I still enjoy making and I will likely continue them in 2024. I also came to the conclusion that 2023 ended up being another rendition of quantity > quality in the BL-verse so not much has changed lol - not that I expected it to. We got a wild and extended mix of different genres and subgenres this year which was nice to see. We saw companies & actors experimenting a lot (with varying results), we got new ships, new fandoms and new enemies, as well as a variety of comebacks and retirements. My watchlist this year was limited to Thai BLs and my blog mostly consisted of gmmtv related content and like I said, if I had had more time I probably would have explored more different shows - but I eventually resorted to what's familiar. I guess I needed an anchor in midst of all my personal chaos lol.

But despite my short list, there were a few gems that I enjoyed. The big ones like Only Friends, Moonlight Chicken, Be My Favorite, etc., and the small, less popular ones like Be Mine Superstar, Mission Fan Possible and a few more. I enjoyed talking to friends & making content about them in the limited timeframes I had. My opinions mostly matched those of the general public but unfortunately there were a few disappointments that were bathing in a success that I could not wrap my head around - Dangerous Romance and A Boss and a Babe being at the top of that list, followed by La Pluie and also a few of the lakorns I watched. But anyway.

Anyone who knows me knows my blog has been 83% FirstKhao this year lmao, they're my favorite people in this industry and watching them act, interact & making content about them has been one of my highlights. I'm excited to see what 2024 brings for them and even if it's not a series, I'm looking forward to seeing what else they will be up to 🥺 🐈‍⬛ 🐈

I'm going into 2024 with mixed feelings but above all I hope I will get the chance to expand my watchlist a little. I will post a personal top10 of the shows I watched this year shortly; until then I want to talk a bit about some lovely people this year - I’m not good with words lmao but thank you for being you and making this hellsite a better place 🥹 lol.

A BL Platform For Everyone

A little over two years ago, me and my BL crew were in our little chat sharing recommendations. 

Cat had an impressive spread sheet, Marcie and I had iCloud Notes, and it was pretty much chaos.

I looked at it and said out loud, "There has to be a better way for us to keep track of our reads and share recommendations. There has to be right?"

Cat said she wished someone would build a BL app with everything already there. Me, a developer of almost thirty years, paused while a floodlight (not a light bulb) went off in my head.

“Well I could maybe build one… cause like, I build stuff. How would that be?”

By the end of the conversation Cat had invited me to build an app for BL. 

Four weeks later, in late February of 2022, digitaljuicy.com was online. 

In the last couple of years, I’ve been listening to the fandom, paying attention to feedback, poured over analytics, read your responses to the Reader’s Survey and continued to craft a platform with all this in mind.

What I have been building is 100% for us... there is nothing but BL and it is an attempt to encompass ALL of BL. Not just the bits and pieces.

But for two years I've been struggling. Struggling in many ways, but specifically to get what I wanted out of the platform. I tried and failed so many times.

In September of 2022 I tried to raise venture capital to build the platform I wanted for us. I pitched it to accelerators and true blue venture capital.

Juicy is what is called 'pre-seed'. Which means were still so new and evolving, under-resourced and while there was interest, there was no joy. No funding was raised.

In December 2023, I realised it was time to rethink Juicy. i have been on the deepest dive for months rebuilding Juicy from the ground up and preparing the framework for the mobile app.

I’ve built something I want to use… and wild, I’m building it and using it as a fan at the same time. I'm at the point where it's impossible not to want to share.

And what kind of platform do I mean? At its most basic level:

You can track your reads, watches and plays

You can review and recommend the titles to the community, your friends, strangers on Twitter, your friend you're trying to corrupt outside the fandom. Your poison.

Timelines for you, for titles, for episodes, chapters… just about everything. I mean everything: The creators, the publishers, the studios, the actors... you can leave reviews and status posts on EVERYTHING. No algorithms, no force feeding... just discovery, recommendations and honest reviews by this community about our community and the industry we feed.

Collections! Lists of stuff you're reading, dropped, want to read, want to buy, love or hate, all pretty and organised and shareable..

A growing database resource of titles, tagged up to its eyeballs with a minutiae of data.. with reading an streaming links and anything else we find that we think is relevant.

But it is also a lot more than this.

I wanted it to be more than what it was. I want to turn Juicy into a mobile app, add some more functionality and more specifically, platform all of BL for its non-Asian fandom.

We get left out of so much, I feel like we need our own thing. 

I don’t know about ya’ll, but I was tired of being banned on social media for sharing content. How you gonna ban me for saying a 2D fictional character needs to be shot with shite and strung with cobweb? But they did… and I know it’s not just me.

What about the creators? How do they interface with the non-Japanese or non-Korean fandoms? On which misogynistic hell site?

What about the publishers and merchandisers? What about the little Etsy sellers? Why does BL have to hidden away in the databases of mangaupdates, anisearch and anilist? Why does every single manga tracker out there seem to have pitiful listings for BL? 

Is it because we’re a female or queer audience?

Either way, I’ve long felt it’s time for us to do our own thing. So I’ve been building it. Pixel by pixel. Feature by feature on my own.

Juicy has been a small chat group, but I’m the only developer. We’ve always been clear about what we wanted to build: A platform for the fandom, the creators, the publishers, the merchandisers… my goal is a one-stop platform for BL and I am damn close to presenting this new iteration.

This was and remains the core of what I’m building: The largest English platform for BL on the planet. The functionality is one thing, but building a database like that is not a one-person job.

So now I need your help.

First to keep the servers online, so I can continue to build and develop and finally, finally release the mobile app. I can't tell you how much I want that.

I’m close to pushing the new Juicy 3.0 out, and I’m very in love with the work I’ve done since December. It’s a new look, and it works 1000 times better than the previous iterations of Juicy.

I just have hit a wall financially, and need your help and support to get it over the line.

Juicy's ass is fat and I been carrying her mostly alone for two solid years. 

I’m going to launch a Kickstarter for this project in a bit so I can hire another developer  to help with the trickier bits and fine tune the mobile app, but for now, I felt a Patreon would at least help us keep the servers up and maybe, just maybe allow us to afford a few crucial bits that will elevate your experience as a user.

And because I’m a developer, and I can do some pretty kinky shit with APIs and such, if you support this Patreon campaign, you will get some nice feature perks on the platform automagically. You won’t have to pay again to access these perks in-app later.

As many perks as I can cook up anyway, not the least of which will be access to some of the nicer functions and features I’ve already built into the platform.

When the mobile app launches, you will get it first and for free! Plus we’ve been talking about a lot of other ways we can make the platform fun beyond what I've done already.

I plan to monetise the platform in various ways, but in a profit sharing model. You contribute to the database, you contribute content, you get a share of whatever the platform makes. This is already built into the system. This will be open to anyone willing, but to Patrons first.

Finally, I'm limiting the number of people who can subscribe via Patreon to 1000 people. Once we hit that number, the rolls will be closed to new membership, and everyone directed to the platform to pay for any services or merchandise.

My goal for this group of Patrons is that you become an exclusive and tightly knit inner circle.

My hope is that you will help me actively shape what Juicy will become. Your votes and say will carry weight. Your feature requests considered and if possible implemented first.

You will get access to exclusive merchandise, exclusive giveaways and promos (like free stuff), and exclusive programming from the team.

With your help we will produce an exclusive podcast for Patrons only discussing all things BL and Juicy (honestly our conversations are generally wild and hilarious... it will be a rollick for sure), along with other content for Patrons only. We've even planned watch parties and other fun shit... I swear, we want you all to be our greatest ambassadors so we are planning as many treats as we can.

Your access on the platform will be specific to your Patreon subscription and your treatment will be VIP for the life of your subscription.

Finally, the way my auADHD are set up, I have no interest in the dramas of the BL fandom, so this is never going to be about gatekeeping access to anything. It’s about making more access possible. You can help bring us all together and make us stronger as a group.

Hils Watches Blood - Ep 1

Time to start a new kdrama and I've opted for an older one. This got recommended to me ages ago and I do love a good vampire show so hopefully I will enjoy this.

Don't know a huge amount about the actual plot except that the male lead is a vampire and possibly also a doctor?

We shall see I guess!

Random fact about Hils. I read my first vampire romance when I was 13 (The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause) and it left an impression. Then I spent almost a decade in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom. I like vampire stuff, okay.

So this dude clearly isn't a vampire because he's out during the day, but he is wearing a doctor's coat. Or what looks like one anyway. Is he a Renfield type character?

Actually I don't think I've watched an asian vampire drama before. Idk if their vampire lore is different to the stuff I grew up with. Can't wait to see. Anyway, this appears to be a very dead vampire.

Very much enjoyed the slow mo reveal of his face as he pulled the scarf down. It's a good face.

about my writing

I’ve been writing and fan fictioning since I was 10. I started my first novel a little over a year ago, I am editing it in a month. I gravitate towards the gothic and historical but I am not gonna limit myself to that. I also write short stories, fic and poetry. 

1. Vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, and more, oh my!: I love me some monsters and allegories that are multilayered, just not zombies. 

2. Fantasy and gothic, I write about the human through the inhuman, Anne Rice once said vampire was the most poignant allegory for outcast and other-ness. 

3. The historical. You have to know the past to understand the present and future. Ancient History through 1920s and all of South Asian history and mythology. 

4. Diversity: I am a queer south asian person but I do earnestly try for informed diverse world views that are nuanced and sympathetic even if not “moral” because vampire, etc.

this is the third iteration of my introduction to the studyblr community because life got in the way twice before (I went to a different country for two months and saw so many cats it was crazy) and completely stopped posting both times lol

but now everything has settled into a routine (so far. not to jinx it or anything-) and I'm ready to return :D

It pains me to see how racist the fandom is because I was looking forward to TTS and I am not a fan of the avatars being the same woman but with a different coat of paint.

Saying things like: Well, Drows are the black equivalent (they aren't) or how they are fantasy creatures so it means not getting human features makes me scratch my head because I have seen black, asian and white elves and is like: fantasy means the creator can let their imagination run wild so why we must be shackled to what makes sense or don't when the creator can make their own rules?

i will never understand some of jester’s choices and especially not this one or the issue of all/majority white love interests in psi and moonborn. his fem love interests seem to be given so much less time, too.

there is something about the way he refuses to acknowledge his behavior and his fans that will never correct or criticize him that makes it hard to want to read his books

if you want fun fluff romance stories (with active even if small fandoms) i could suggest east asian shows. sure a lot of people get hit by cars and get sick by standing 2 mins under the rain but there's a lot of fun and cheesy stuff. be it korean dramas or thai dramas. taiwan & china tend to be more uh tense and dark. japan's a wild card. also lakorn (soap operas) don't often end well and are wild but some are fun! can check mydramalist or tumblr too

On Emralt (it's complicated)

Being into Emhyr/Geralt is wild. Like, really wild. And I'm actively avoiding talking of being in a fandom here, because there is no coherent fandom for the pairing. There's the small amount of Emralt lovers in the west (amazingly many Germans, which is strange), then there's the Asians and the Russians. While we're mainly focusing on AO3 for our fics, they have other sites they use, and (as least that's true for the Asians) are even more active.

Many asian fans, however, are constantly fighting about who's the better bottom in the ship, and they have WAY more filthy stuff to choose from (and, unfortunately for us, have a lot of more artists, but we don't get to see much of them). A lot of russian fans meanwhile are mainly glorifying Emhyr for reasons I don't like to think about. They, too, have great fics, and even though they are mostly much easier to translate than the asian ones, the beauty of their language is not really transferrable.

Writing Emralt is even wilder. The few asian and russian fans that use AO3 don't really pay attention to you, often because of a certain language barrier. But all in all, there's not that many people left that read Emralt, especially if you don't cater to their (quite specific) interests.

So, to sum it up, it's not a very grateful pairing to write for, also because of its glorious past that's randomly referenced from time to time (and I think the one thing we all agree on is that, yes, we are thankful for that, but please stop comparing). It's controversial, frowned upon and full of fics that seem to have been written by people with daddy issues or whatever.

And still! I'm so happy with the pairing, even if i have barely anyone to talk to about them and I don't even like the majority of fics because of the recurring, tiring dom-sub theme. But every once in a while, there are some really good ones. The ones that focus on the things the two actually have in common rather than what divides them. I find those always the best fics to read, in any pairing (excluding Geraskier, I'm sorry, because I've read too many OOC fics there, even if there are also really great ones).

I don't know how much more there is to explore for me, but I know the pairing will always have a special place in my heart, also for introducing me to liking M/M pairings in general, for getting back into writing and exploring fic tropes. There might not be that much of an active fandom anymore, but there are still people around that read and write Emralt, and I thank you for that.

Please consider drawing them more, too 😂

Does it though? Liam’s socials have been as weird as his promo since they cancelled his album in 2018. He’s said he doesn’t have access to his social media accounts and he doesn’t have management either. Who is booking a tour for him? Why random dates in South America? Why the short notice? Is Liam even aware someone has booked tour dates for him? Plus there were anons to several blogs ‘reminding’ people there was nothing odd about Louis canceling those Asian dates the day before these dates dropped. I’ll be shocked if they actually take place.

I don't think there is anything weird about Louis Asia dates being cancelled, I didn't see any anons like that but wonder if they have to do with the fact that we were discussing it, or if they were just a response to the fact that tbh, whatever story is apparently gaining ground sounds kind of fucking nuts. I would also like to remind people that there's nothing weird about it! I can't imagine what you think is the connection between Louis' tour dates and Liam's announced dates and who on the inside is allegedly sending these anons about it, what kind of weird conspiracy would somehow connect the two and result in them being announced and then cancelled. I would actually really love if you came back and laid out for me exactly what that would be and how it would work (I mean this- whatever you are implying makes no sense to me and I am curious); but I (perhaps overly optimistically) suspect if you try to actually articulate this vague scenario you yourself will see how little sense it makes. But hey, maybe this mysterious conspiracy also involves all the other artists who had to cancel their Asia dates this year due to the exorbitant costs of touring there! But anyway while we're at it: it's not WEIRD that Liam's album was cancelled either or that his management is a mess- it's a BUMMER and it sucks for him, but it isn't some huge inexplicable conundrum. I feel like this kind of stuff in the fandom is related to how when you're young, no matter how much people say otherwise, it's impossible not to believe that adults are Different and that grown ups possess some kind of magic competence- similarly people in this fandom continually discard the idea that behind the scenes things are just kind of a fucking mess sometimes, especially if the person at the top of the pyramid isn't the most together. I have been more up on the exact details of Liam's situation at other times in the past than I am now so I admit, I'm not sure of some exact things and where they stand right now (if anyone is). But one thing I notice here is that I believe you are mashing together things about Liam's situation from the past couple years, some of which may or may not still be true, and things from now. I'm not at all sure that Liam doesn't at this moment have any management and given how many things he's actively up to that seems very unlikely to still be true to me. But also that term is pretty vague- like these guys have various different people and agencies for different things. He could lack a direct personal Manager (again do we know for sure that that's still the case, or just WAS the case) and still employ a booking agency and a PR agency, for example. I'm going to ignore the part where you ask if Liam even knows he's had dates booked because wtf. We all worry about Liam but I personally think the story you've apparently settled on about what's happening with him is unnecessarily extreme and somewhat insulting to him. He may or may not make every one of his social media posts himself (few famous people do) but he is definitely making most of them himself (thus why they are weird tbh, because he is a weirdo and is running wild a bit on the socials, bless him). Also if you think he has no management who do you think is posting his socials and holding him captive and announcing fake dates?? This is giving me a headache. Anyway: yes I do think Liam will play the LATAM shows if he's personally able to, which tbh seems a more likely danger to them going ahead than an international conspiracy.

My name is Lovino, but I go by Lovi or Lino.

I am an '00-liner, and am 22 years old (as of October 2022).

I am AFAB, but am Genderqueer/Non-Binary. I also use any pronouns!

I am Queer (i.e. not straight). I don't care enough about labels to delve further into that.

I am of mixed East & Southeast Asian ethnicity.

I was born in Southeast Asia (Vietnam, specifically!), but I have moved around a lot throughout my life so I've lived lots of places. I currently reside in Canada.

I can speak six (6) languages, but English is the one I'm most confident in, since it's the one I've used the most in life.

My MBTI is INFJ-T.

My Western Zodiac is Scorpio (Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon, Cancer ASC1), and my Eastern Zodiac is the Dragon (Yang, Metal, 庚+辰).

I'm currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree (Anthropology & Psychology Dual-Major). I am a sucker for the arts in general, but especially the study of people (history, culture, language, and how humans function in general).

I'm very new to writing and not super confident in my abilities, but I will try my best! Please be aware that I can't promise/guarantee high consistency or quality writing by any means.

Please note that I do have real bad ADHD (diagnosed) and stuff going on in my real life, so I may occasionally go MIA for a bit or struggle with consistency. Apologies in advance for that.

Random Facts About Me...

I was born on halloween! (October 31st, 2000)

I was born in Vietnam and spent the first couple years of my life there.

I love Sichuanese food (四川菜) a lot. Mapo Tofu (麻婆豆腐) & Sichuan Hot Pot (四川火鍋) are both among my favourite dishes of all time.

Two of my biggest comfort foods are Zòngzi (粽子) & Dòujiāng Yóutiáo (豆浆油条). They are very nostalgic and remind me a lot of my childhood.

My favourite colours are black, red, and pink.

My favourite books are The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde, 1890) & Demian (Hermann Hesse, 1919).

I don't watch TV. I am very uncultured when it comes to TV Shows & Films. I've never even seen Titanic.

Because I moved around so much growing up, I didn't really make many friends or socialise much. I blame my introversion and chronically online-ness on this. (Also this blog is low-key high-key an excuse/motivation for me to force myself out of my comfort zone by interacting with people.)

I love bugs, but I am afraid of wasps+hornets, centipedes+house centipedes, butterflies, & moths. Pretty much every other bug is chill in my books, though. I think spiders are hella cool, but I keep my distance just in case.

One unique problem with that "motivation" part is that the fandom audience is a double-edged sword. Writers often lose motivation to write original works not only because they don't GET support, it almost seems like they LOSE support when trying to make the jump from "fanwork" to "original."

Because aside from prominent authors who have enough pull to take up the slack, for your regular author with a couple dozen followers/fans? Fanworks are all your audience cares about.

Sure, people love your fanworks! They post about it, they write their own fanworks, and they froth at the mouth about HOW GREAT YOUR FANWORKS ARE.

But for many writers I've seen, including myself, that is all their fandom audience wants from them. It's not just that people "benignly" ignore all the author's stuff about original work, I feel like I've heard about at least one author complaining that their original works tend to get responses asking about their fanworks instead.

So then authors get burned out because of how one-sided their audience is, and they either take a break or give up writing entirely.

Because only their fanworks matter, and they're sick of it.

I wrote an accidental hit on my writing blog about preindustrial traveling. It's got literally thousands of notes after about a month. It's not obscure information, nor do I consider it particularly "well-written" as a piece/series--because I'm ultimately not a scholar, and I just consider my posts a primer for other writers to "make sure your fantasy/period pieces don't make historians, athletes, or equestrians roll their eyes when you say a single person (or a horse-and-rider pair) manages to cover 50 miles a day without consequences."

But somehow people keep liking/reblogging it. The outdated version, the updated version with its many, many links--both of those are SO POPULAR! I'm not sure how I managed to turn five thousand Tumblr folks into logistics nerds, but apparently I did.

My fanworks are a Glee fanfic about Kurt and Blaine that I'm really trying to finish, and a Black Panther fanfic that will (eventually) explore both the worldbuilding of Talokan, Kukulkan's quest for redemption after the events of Wakanda Forever, and how Jotunheim actually feels about their lost prince Loki getting "adopted" by Odin. I'm not a big-name fan, but I got a fair few people leaving likes/kudos and comments on both of them.

Meanwhile, I have a short story about Filipino merfolk getting washed up in Ireland and eating a fisherman who tries to kidnap a selkie woman; I have a novel about the Wild Hunt dicking around with an Asian American family; I have a SECOND novel about a lost Tagalog sea-god trying to reconnect with his now-Filipino-American wife and almost getting deported; I have various weird poems about my angry/depressing "conversations" with fictional versions of the Tagalog gods, and how we commiserate about being colonized.

I bet both my fanworks and my original works sound fantastic to others. I bet they sound unique.

But I am so tired of everyone saying how COOL and UNIQUE my original stuff sounds, because barely anyone besides my friends actually treats it as important. I might get a lot of notes about a given piece, but I barely have any audience to show for it--or at least, an audience who actually LEAVES COMMENTS/REVIEWS, and gives me proof that they like my stuff.

I've gotten at least a couple of people who ASK ME FOR LINKS TO MY WORK, and I did it because it got my hopes up that this was going to be another reader, but then I never heard from them again.

And I have WAY more original stuff than that. As many writers do, I have so much fucking original works that are still largely in the "concept" stage, but I don't even know if I should bother to post them on Wattpad or on Wordpress.

Because guess what, I did that already! Multiple times!

And it's exhausting to feel the difference between "fanwork response" and "original work response."

I forgot how lonely it is to write original fiction.

Where are the kudos? The subscriptions? The comments? The people cheerleading me chapter to chapter? Where are the kind words and compliments and reassurances that what I'm writing isn't complete crap? Where are the unhinged emojis? The asks on Tumblr? Where are my mutuals in my dms apologizing for not reading the latest chapter right away (side note, you know you don't have to apologize at all, right??). Where is the fanart? Where are the recs?

Where is my motivation to keep going?

It's something I've been thinking about a lot, actually, lately. How the experience of writing fanfic is so unique. How you already have an audience, willing and waiting and captive. And that's really it, isn't it? You have an audience. It's almost performative, writing fanfic. It's being on a stage, a one-person show (or two, if you do it with a friend); it's getting live reactions to your performance, it's feeding off the energy of the crowd and informing it back in a feedback loop; it's improvised, sometimes, in almost-real-time. It's building something that you couldn't have built by yourself. A thing that takes on a life of its own.

It's an experience you can't get writing original fiction, and, honestly, not having it is making it hard to write something original at all.
