Decided to draw another one of my favorite bridal costumes from my beloved Palestine, this one is from Artas (أرطاس), a small village south of Bethlehem in the West Bank. This is a companion piece to this artwork I did a year ago.

I've spent two days at the The Seventh Finnish Colloquium of Middle East and North African Studies and learned about Hilma Granqvist (among other stuff).

She was an anthropologist who in the 1920s traveled to Palestine "in order to find the Jewish ancestors of Scripture". What she found instead was a Palestinian people with a distinct culture and way of life, and she expressed astonishment at how readily people accepted the Zionist narrative when she could clearly see it was faulty.

She lived in the village of Artas for years and studied e.g. the marriage customs of the people living there, and she said that there, she really felt like home and that she had finally found a place in which she could be herself.
