Hello April! This month my reading life is being taken over by mostly sports romances. Mostly because I’m planning a reread of the All For The Game series to be ready for when the new book comes out later this month. So here’s what I’m planning to read:
Power Plays & Straight A’s -currently reading
All Hail The Underdogs -currently reading
The Foxhole Court
The Raven King
The Kings Men
Mad Men
Delinquent Daddy & Tender Teacher
Proficiency Bonus
Bonus Action
Swamp Thing: Twin Branches
I’m already feeling a bit unhinged with all the sports books I’ve got stuffed into this tbr 😂

Shadow and Bone 💭
Binged through season two of Shadow and Bone two weeks ago. After I finished, I of course felt that inevitable emptiness and decided to read the books. When my noncommittal scatterbrain aries ass acts up, I never finish anything that I start.. so my April tbr books have been put on hold as I passionately dive in head first to the ✨Grisha Universe✨. To be honest, I have fallen in love with the crows and I was looking forward to their story the most. However, the videos and blogs I watched and read regarding the order in which I should read the series all said to start with Alina’s story, The Shadow and Bone trilogy.
Anyways- I’m now on book two of the trilogy, Siege and Storm. So far, the show follows Alina’s story pretty well. I agree with most book reviewers that book Alina is kind of mean and stuck up lol and that she constantly ridicules herself and others. I feel like that’s common in a lot of young adult books written between the two-thousands and twenty-tens. The female leads are clueless about their beauty, typically ‘scrawny’, and self-proclaimed loners who judge others harshly lol. That being said, I do think she’s young and she is learning a lot as she goes and her growth is evident. Overall, I think the books have been good, and action-based, and the plot is slightly driven by miscommunication lmao, but I am looking forward to being done with the trilogy so I can begin Six of Crows.

April TBR--
I have a high hopes for the month of April. Mostly because I’m putting a lot of my recent purchases on this TBR, but also because I’m planning on finishing my 40 Books Before 40 project. There are also a few eBooks on my TBR so let’s start with those.
1. The Curse of Broken Shadows by Laura Winter (Kindle)-- I’ll give you the author’s own description of this one: “epic romantic fantasy (dark & steamy), LGBT+, found family of assassins, polyamorous relationships, strong female characters, sun/moon/earth/shadow magic, features two other fantasy languages AND sign language, knife flirting.” This is the first book in a series from a self-published author. Also, ‘knife flirting’? Say less.
2. The Black Hawks by David Wragg (Kindle)-- I’m picking this one up based on JadeyRaeReads and her experience reading this one. I don’t know much going into it except that we follow Chel who isn’t enjoying his life as a knight. He no longer dreams of glory. He dreams of going home. When invaders arrive in the kingdom, Chel is given an opportunity. Escort a stranded prince to safety and he will be released from his oath. All he has to do is drag the brat from one side of the country to the other through war and wilderness while being chased by ruthless assassins. Chel will need killers watching his back; he’ll need the Black Hawks--mercenaries, fighters without equal. Prepare to join the Black Hawks. Why does this cover give me The Old Guard vibes? (I’m praying to all the gods that this gives me some solid Old Guard vibes.)
3. The Combat Codes by Alexander Darwin (NetGalley)-- The first book in a Sci-Fi trilogy. In this world, war is no longer the method used to solve problems between nations. Instead, highly-skilled warriors named Grievar Knights represent their nation’s interests in hand-to-hand combat. An ex-Knight named Murray is on the hunt for the next champion. He believes Cego, an orphaned boy who is making a name for himself in underground combat rings, has what it takes to thrive in the world’s most prestigious combat academy. This one sounds right up my alley. Especially the academy setting.
4. Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes-- The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts is a luxurious and clandestine college dedicated to the fine art of murder. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for ‘erasing’ someone who deserves no fate worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this ‘Poison Ivy League’ college is where you might find yourself the target practice for a classmate and where your mandatory graduation thesis is getting away with the perfect murder that will make the world a much better place to live. I love the tone of this one already. I’m so here for an irreverent and cheeky how-to set in a dark academia setting. (I mean, it involves learning how to murder someone so...it has to be classed as ‘dark academia’ right?)
5. Jade City by Fonda Lee-- This one is a well known and well loved series so I highly doubt I need to hype it up for anyone. It’s also the final book in my 40 Books Before 40 Project. Can you believe? And just over 6 years early too. In this world, magical jade grants those with the right training and heritage superhuman abilities. The Kaul family is one of the two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon which is the only place in the world that produces the jade. We see a clash between the Kauls and their greatest rivals in a clan war that will determine the fate of all Green Bones and the future of Kekon itself.
6. The Me You Love in the Dark by Skottie Young-- An artist named Ro retreats from the grind of the city to an old house in a small town. She hopes for solace and inspiration, but the muse she finds within is not what she expected. This seems like it could be a haunted house of sorts.
7. Misfit by Elle Kennedy-- I’m trying a different style of Elle Kennedy’s writing this time and going for a romance without any hockey in it. I know, who am I? And I found this in Canada, the land of hockey. RJ Shaw’s mother is marrying some rich guy he’s never met and it gets worse: he’s being sent to Sandover Prep for senior year. If there’s one place a misfit hacker like RJ doesn’t belong, it’s an ivy-covered school for rich delinquents. He doesn’t try to get along with anyone. That is until he meets Sloane Tresscott in the woods on the outskirts of campus. She’s gorgeous and sharp tongued--and completely off-limits since she’s the headmaster’s daughter. If RJ wants to survive prep school and win Sloane’s heart, he’ll need to figure out a way to use all the secrets hidden in the walls of Sandover. Rich people drama? Forbidden romance? Sign me up.

my april tbr + the books on my radar | i'm in a romantasy mood but have no idea what to read 😂🙈
Last month was a bit wild and came out of nowhere but I absolutely loved it! I started the month thinking I was going to be in a small town romance mood and ended up being in a fantasy mood and only reading Sarah J Maas books for the entire month of March… so now what? I legitimately can’t think of any books that compare to SJM’s books (that are also complete series) so I’m struggling to find…

April 2023 TBR
All the fabulous books I am reading in April!
It is my birthday month! I was too cosy in my mum’s tum and was supposed to come in March but I waited for the supposed sun in April. I love being born in April as it is the month of Easter which is just one big indulgence in chocolate and hot cross buns, my two favourite things in life. In terms reading though, I am keeping it short and sweet, as I know I will be busy seeing friends. However,…

Since the other week I reorganized my shelves, and I got rid of some books, I decided to write down a list of all the books I own that I haven't read yet. I divided them in three categories: non fiction, fiction, classics from a collection I was getting weekly with newspapers (which are very pretty but of course doing that ment accumulating a pretty high number of books in a small period of time, which made my physical tbr quite big. And since they are classics I definitely go for them way more slowly than other books, which is why they are a whole separate category). If you do read the titles you'll realize my columns aren't super precise bc there's some non fic classics with the fiction, and other weird thing, but I wrote things down following the shelf division. Non fiction is clesrly a category of its own because they are the books I read less during the year, so I know that pile will get smaller in much more time, and it's okay. Overall I am pleased, because compared to the list I made at the beginning of the year there's less books, despite me having added a few new books (both new buys and gifts I got). What making this list made me realize is that 90% of these unread books were gifts, which means do not gift me books. Jokes aside I think this shows that when I am the one buying the books for myself I get things I know I will read right away, or in a short period of time. It makes sense that the unread books I accumulate are books I am gifted because they probably weren't a priority at the time. I made a small list of a few books I'd like to read before the end of the year, so we'll see how I did in a few months.
