Concept sketch discussion! (Plus bonus sketches!)

So, clearly I struggled a lot more with May’s design than I did Aprils…

April is very much accident prone, so she’s always getting dirty! In the bottom you can even see her getting ready to jump into a puddle! In my mind, rain especially just kind follows her around like Olaf and his snow cloud! So for her, I wanted her to have a rain coat, particularly a big one that’s going to protect all of her clothes from most splashes and spills! (Coincidentally, it also made drawing her much easier since it’s basically a giant triangle!) once I decided her coat should be yellow, I just kinda took that and ran with a more pastel version of the primary colors for her color scheme to fit her very childish nature. The rest just kinda fell into place

For May it was a bit harder. In the top you can see a small doodle of her riding on a dandelion seed, the plant which her design was inspired by. I knew I wanted to use a more natural palate, given her love for gardening and nature. Also, her character is very graceful, inspired by how dandelion seed dance along with the wind when you blow on them. She’s like a fairy princess type character, so I really wanted to have her in a big poffy dress. She also has Vitiligo, because it reminds me of flowers blooming all over her skin, which I felt was perfect for a fairy princess! As you can see I tried putting flowers in her hair, but that got out of hand (also why orange??) but yeah. I also wanted to avoid colors I had already used for April in order to further show the contrast between the two girls, but I also didn’t wanna use a natural hair color, because there’s a lot of forest scenes and I didn’t want her getting lost in the trees and such, especially since she’s already got a lot of natural tones going on. I will say, I do like the dress, but I’ve pretty much cut the cape in more recent designs, and her hair now sits in a big bun on top of her head! (Ass can be seen in the first sketch) Aprils hair is very visually heavy on the bottom, so I thought it would be good contrast to focus May’s hair on the top of her head.

Please please please let me know if I’ve made any mistakes! I want my stories to bring joy to people! The last thing I want to do is hurt anyone with my characters and how they are portrayed!

May is a badass girl even with her minimal training and can and will hold her own in a fight. She doesn’t ask for help, even if the odds are against her.

But when she’s cornered and clearly outmatched, on the ground with her knuckles bloodied and grit on her face, and yells for “DAD!”
